04:59 AM JT-Cave: morning
09:48 AM perry_j1987: morning all
09:56 AM perry_j1987: anyone still around this IRC? heh
10:02 AM Vq: A few souls
10:04 AM perry_j1987: hows it going
10:06 AM Vq: The sun went up, a few minutes later it went down.
10:07 AM Vq: Midwinter may be upon us
10:29 AM rdtsc: Vq = Santa Claus, and is at the North Pole! ;)
10:31 AM perry_j1987: ya I got snow accumulating on my solar panels here its not cool lol
10:32 AM rdtsc: wonder if anyone has thought about wiring heaters in them, for manual "defrosting?"
10:36 AM perry_j1987: they will do that automatically
10:37 AM perry_j1987: if you have a tiny corner of exposed panel it will start generating electricity and defrost the rest of the panel eventually
11:12 AM perry_j1987: man....
11:12 AM perry_j1987: the plastic housing of this consew spindle motor is deteriorating...
11:12 AM perry_j1987: on my Taig mill
01:14 PM * JT-Shop is off until next year
01:17 PM Tom_L: more time for C3
01:17 PM JT-Shop: yup should get it back on the ground soon
01:17 PM Tom_L: do they shut down between Christmas and New Year?
01:18 PM Tom_L: or just you :)
01:19 PM JT-Shop: they shut down 12/20 at the end of the day and start back up 1/2
01:19 PM JT-Shop: I'm taking tomorrow off just to be sure I get enough rest
01:20 PM Tom_L: gotta get that in for sure
01:20 PM JT-Shop: I did finish up all the conduit runs today, so next is pulling cables
01:21 PM Tom_L: all the pannels mounted to the floor?
01:21 PM Tom_L: estop thingies
01:21 PM JT-Shop: yup and I have conduit from each one back to the enclosure
01:21 PM Tom_L: cool
01:22 PM JT-Shop: so I'm ready to pull cables, I ordered 20 awg 3 wire cable and some 22 awg 3 wire cable
01:22 PM JT-Shop: dewey just bought something from me
01:23 PM Tom_L: he never hung out here did he?
01:23 PM Tom_L: not much anyway
03:37 PM xxcoder: Tom_L: we disabled much of image embed stuff so bot should be allowed in soon
03:40 PM Tom_L: in flexdev too...
03:41 PM xxcoder: all linuxcnc channel is set like that
03:41 PM xxcoder: only testing channel still permits link embedding
03:41 PM xxcoder: and file upload
03:47 PM JT-Shop: cool
03:48 PM * JT-Shop just started a fire in here
03:48 PM * Tom_L went out without a jacket here this afternoon
03:49 PM * JT-Shop can't wait for his lip to be not numb
03:50 PM Tom_L: why for be it numb?
03:50 PM JT-Shop: dentist
03:50 PM Tom_L: been there a time or two recently...
03:50 PM Tom_L: finally
03:50 PM JT-Shop: broke off a bit and he cleaned it up and built it back up
03:50 PM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
03:51 PM Tom_L: need a 3rd one but gonna wait til after the holidays
03:51 PM Tom_L: 2 root canals & crowns
03:51 PM JT-Shop: fun
03:52 PM JT-Shop: I've had my fair share of them
03:52 PM Tom_L: it's certainly improved over the years
03:52 PM Tom_L: as a kid i hated it
03:52 PM Tom_L: me too
03:52 PM JT-Shop: yup the old ritter belt drive drill sucked
03:52 PM Tom_L: i had 3-4 fillings that fell out
03:52 PM Tom_L: silver
03:54 PM JT-Shop: I was glad Rick could fit me in today on short notice
03:54 PM Tom_L: they 3d printed my crowns as i waited
03:55 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/desktop_cnc.mp4
03:55 PM Tom_L: that's what that is
03:55 PM JT-Shop: I used to get the temp cap and come back a week later for the crown
03:55 PM Tom_L: err 3d machined
03:55 PM Tom_L: not anymore
03:56 PM Tom_L: this 3rd one will probably be a temp as it will have to be a bridge
03:56 PM JT-Shop: the xray thing is like a flashlight now
03:56 PM Tom_L: battery
03:56 PM Tom_L: yeah
03:56 PM Tom_L: with the sensor that goes in the mouth
03:57 PM Tom_L: no more spit sinks either
03:57 PM JT-Shop: nope
03:57 PM JT-Shop: I've not seen a spit sink in a long time
03:57 PM Tom_L: i've not been to the dentist in a long time
03:58 PM Tom_L: the last one i saw was a butcher from the military
03:58 PM Tom_L: lots of times no deadening etc just get in and get it done
03:59 PM Tom_L: that's why it took so long for me to go back
04:08 PM JT-Shop: ouch
04:09 PM rdtsc: "dent"-ist eh?
04:10 PM Tom_L: childhood memories :)
04:11 PM roycroft: my childhood dentist was a sadist
04:11 PM roycroft: i think that was a requirement back then
04:11 PM Tom_L: aparently
04:12 PM roycroft: i've gotten over that though, and most of my recent dentists have been pretty good
04:12 PM JT-Shop: my sister worked for one that would "accidentally" drill into the gum to make it bleed
04:12 PM roycroft: right now it's my insurance company who are the sadists
04:13 PM * JT-Shop goes to start a fire in the other shop
04:13 PM roycroft: i need to have a broken tooth extracted, which i've needed done for months
04:13 PM roycroft: the problem is that my dentist, nor any other local dentists in network cannot do the extraction, as it's partially impacted
04:13 PM roycroft: and the nearest oral surgeon who is in network is 2 hours from here
04:14 PM roycroft: in a small town that has no public transportation
04:14 PM roycroft: and i'm advised that when i get the work done i won't be able to drive after
04:14 PM xxcoder: sucks, because of that yeah
04:14 PM roycroft: i've had a hard time finding someone to take me there, wait, and drive me home
04:15 PM xxcoder: if I lived there I'd voluneer
04:15 PM xxcoder: but I live too dar
04:15 PM xxcoder: far
04:15 PM roycroft: i suspect my only option will be to drive there, book a hotel within walking/crawling distance of the dentist's office (if there is one), get the procedure, and stay at the hotel overnight
04:16 PM roycroft: or pay $1800 out of pocket to have an out of network oral surgeon do it
04:17 PM xxcoder: uber?
04:17 PM roycroft: my current dentist is not sadistic in her procedures, but she has a very sharp, judgy tounge
04:18 PM roycroft: apparently being old is no excuse for any kind of dental problems
04:18 PM roycroft: in her view, it seems that people who are 100 years old should have teeth in the same condition as when they were 20
04:18 PM roycroft: and if they don't its due to poor dental hygiene on the part of the patient, and is totally avoidable
04:19 PM Tom_L: check back with her in her 80's
04:19 PM roycroft: both of my parents had full dentures by the time they were 60, and i'm much older than that and still have all my teeth
04:19 PM roycroft: other than my wisdom teeth
04:20 PM roycroft: i need some work, but given my family history i'm doing pretty well
04:20 PM xxcoder: its bit ironic that wisdom teeth gets removed
04:20 PM xxcoder: no wisdom for anyone? lol
04:20 PM roycroft: well maybe that's why i'm so dumb
04:20 PM xxcoder: I only have two, thats why I didnt need any to be removed
04:20 PM roycroft: i had all four removed, and they were all impacted
04:20 PM xxcoder: on seperate rows, one top and one bottom
04:20 PM roycroft: it took hours for the procedure
04:21 PM roycroft: that was a good 35+ years ago, and i still remember it clearly
04:21 PM xxcoder: sucks
04:21 PM Tom_L: as a kid i had some seed teeth that had to be surgically removed before my front teeth would come in
04:22 PM Tom_L: you don't forget things like that
04:22 PM rdtsc: seen where a woman was having weird face issues for years; eventually found out it was an infection inside the jawbone
04:25 PM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
04:26 PM rdtsc: recently learned that an infection can happen anywhere... skin, brain, prostate - with seemingly no cause, weird
04:30 PM JT-Shop: when I was young I had a cyst inside my jaw and it swelled out my jaw and the bone was as thin as an egg shell
04:31 PM JT-Shop: the surgeon warned me that when I woke up my jaw may be wired shut
04:31 PM roycroft: did your wife put him up to that? :)
04:32 PM JT-Shop: I was not married at the time but he said the jaw bone could break while removing the cyst
04:33 PM JT-Shop: after the surgery I had two drain tubes hanging out of my jaw
04:34 PM rdtsc: ouch
04:38 PM roycroft: so i was not able to get that axle pulled yesterday, but it's warm and dry today
04:38 PM roycroft: hopefully i can do it right after work
04:38 PM roycroft: hopefully it will take 10 minutes
04:38 PM JT-Shop: nice
04:39 PM roycroft: if it does take 10 minutes i might do the parts run today
04:39 PM roycroft: assuming i can figure out exactly what i need
04:39 PM JT-Shop: after rebuilding the passenger front suspension the drivers side is much easier
04:39 PM roycroft: i can imagine
04:39 PM roycroft: it probably took half as long, because you knew what you were doing
04:39 PM JT-Shop: learned a lot on the passenger side
04:40 PM JT-Shop: took a bit longer I think because I'm videoing the process to help others
04:41 PM JT-Shop: took is really taking as I'm not done yet
04:44 PM roycroft: well documenting it is a good thing
04:44 PM roycroft: i'd have been able to figure out what to do with my wheel hub/axle on my own, but watching some videos before doing the work made it go a lot easier
04:45 PM roycroft: following instructions is usally easier than figuring something out from scratch
04:45 PM JT-Shop: yup
04:45 PM JT-Shop: what I hate is videos that don't really show every step and are more about the person than the task
04:46 PM * roycroft just realized that he's doing laundry right now, and his temporary 240v drop to the shop (which runs the air compressor) is his dryer circuit
04:46 PM Tom_L: i don't watch facetime videos
04:46 PM roycroft: since i only need air to remove four bolts, i guess i can put the dryer on pause for a few minutes
04:47 PM roycroft: this is the one annoyance with the temporary shop power that i'd like to resolve soon - i have to unplug the dryer and plug in the 240v extension cord to the shop whenever i want shop power
04:47 PM roycroft: and do the opposite when i do laundry
04:48 PM roycroft: it would be expensive to bring a dedicated 30a circuit to the shop, though
04:48 PM JT-Shop: my big shop is still running on temp power from a 240v outlet in the machine shop
04:48 PM roycroft: and what i really want is a 100a circuit, but that waits until i build the extension to the shop
04:48 PM roycroft: so i get to live with the extension cord for a while
04:49 PM roycroft: when i install the laundry sink ( very soon, i hope) i might add another 30a receptacle next to the dryer, so i don't have to go swapping plugs all the time - i'd just have to remember not to use the dryer when working in the shop and vice versa
04:50 PM roycroft: and if i forget, the circuit breaker will remind me
04:50 PM Tom_L: that seems a bit pointless unless it's a separate circuit
04:50 PM roycroft: it's already awkward to reach in and swap plugs
04:51 PM JT-Shop: get a Y cord
04:51 PM roycroft: and when i install the sink it will go from awkward to requiring contortions
04:51 PM roycroft: maybe a y cord would be better - yeah
04:51 PM roycroft: although it would cost more
04:51 PM xxcoder: shop having its own breaker, rated lower amp than main box would work too
04:51 PM roycroft: but it probably would be better
04:51 PM Tom_L: i backfeed my generator thru my welding plug in the garage during an outtage
04:51 PM xxcoder: so if it blows you know you used too much at once
04:51 PM roycroft: well, i genearlly need 20a in the shop
04:52 PM roycroft: what i had in the old shop was 20a for the air compressor and dust collector, and 20a for the machines
04:52 PM roycroft: the dust collector is only 1hp, though
04:52 PM roycroft: what i've done in the new shop is pull a 30a temporary drop to it into a breaker box
04:53 PM roycroft: and i have 2 20a circuits branching from there - one to the shed with the ac and dust collector, and one to a receptacle for shop machines
04:53 PM JT-Shop: I'm going to have a 100a service in the new shop when I'm done at Empire
04:53 PM roycroft: i had 60a at the old shop
04:54 PM Tom_L: i've gotten by with 60A in the garage
04:54 PM roycroft: but i'm going to pull 100a in this one, i think
04:54 PM JT-Shop: I have 200a to the machine shop and garage
04:54 PM roycroft: my welders need 50a
04:54 PM roycroft: as does my brew system, if i ever use it again
04:54 PM roycroft: i have 200a to the house
04:54 PM Tom_L: i've never blown any breakers ... yet
04:54 PM JT-Shop: I gave my brew system away
04:54 PM roycroft: and no real power to the shop
04:54 PM roycroft: i'm going to try to sell mine, i'm pretty sure
04:55 PM roycroft: i don't brew these days, and don't have room for the brew system
04:55 PM roycroft: it's costing me money to store it, so selling it is my goal
04:55 PM JT-Shop: it was fun to do but I don't drink much beer any more
04:55 PM roycroft: the problem is that i have over $6k invested in it, and i'll have a hard time getting even $3k for it
04:55 PM roycroft: and i don't want to sell it for less than that
04:56 PM roycroft: yeah, i stopped brewing at the beginning of the pandemic, as i was not able to share with friends any more
04:56 PM roycroft: and when the pandemic ended i never got around to brewing again
04:56 PM roycroft: i'm thinking that if i can sell/donate most of the brewing gear, i'll keep enough stuff to make a couple batches of mead per year
04:56 PM roycroft: and that will be fine
04:58 PM JT-Shop: I kept enough stuff to make wine but have not made any in a long time
04:58 PM roycroft: i have about 20 carboys
04:58 PM roycroft: i got rid of all the plastic fermentors/racking buckets already
04:58 PM JT-Shop: I did too and still have about 6 or 8 left
04:58 PM roycroft: i have close to 30 corny kegs
04:58 PM roycroft: i want to sell all of those
04:59 PM roycroft: a half dozen or so are still occupied
04:59 PM JT-Shop: I got rid of all my corny kegs iirc about 20
04:59 PM roycroft: and until i get my laundry sink installed i can't reasonably empty them and clean them out
04:59 PM roycroft: frankly, a lot of things i want and need to do depend on that laundry sink, so i'm making that a high priority to install
05:00 PM roycroft: plus, when it's installed that will free up some room in my portable garage, and i could use the room to store things like my horizontal bandsaw and my belt grinder
05:00 PM roycroft: both of which are still at the old shop
05:01 PM JT-Shop: it's like the pygmy that ate the elephant one bite at a time
05:03 PM roycroft: yup
05:08 PM roycroft: well, time to do the pickup work
05:08 PM roycroft: i need to start the dryer, but if i can get the vehicle work done in 10 minutes that should work out fine
05:09 PM roycroft: i think have two screws and four bolts to remove, and then the axle should come out
05:09 PM roycroft: i may do a parts run today for what i think i need, knowing i may need to do a second parts run once i get into the job
05:09 PM * roycroft heads out to see how it goes
05:16 PM rdtsc: In the era of Medicine 4.0, insulin has been modified to work automatically: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVTS_J7Xmxs
05:48 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:15 PM roycroft: well that took almost an hour, not 10 minutes, but i'm not surprised
06:15 PM roycroft: that's how wrenching on cars goes much of the time
06:15 PM roycroft: i need a new hub assembly, brake pads, and outer axle shaft
06:16 PM roycroft: the u-joint seems fine, but i'm going to compare the cost of the outer shaft vs a complete axle shaft assembly, with the u-jing already installed
06:16 PM roycroft: because that could save at least a couple very frustrating hours of my time
06:39 PM roycroft: $120 for the outer axle shaft and $40-$80 for the u-joint (i'm not sure which one i need), vs. $680 for the full assembly
06:40 PM roycroft: looks like i'll be installing a u-joint and getting frustrated
06:40 PM roycroft: the inner shaft looks really good, so i think i don't have to get into the differential at all
06:41 PM roycroft: i should just be able to replace the differential outer seal and then everything from the knuckle joint out
06:41 PM roycroft: the hub lock looks good too
06:45 PM * roycroft heads off to try to get most of the parts today
06:51 PM xxcoder: fun allday rain again
06:52 PM xxcoder: looking forward to exactly same weather for next week
08:44 PM bjorkintosh: http://www.incompleteideas.net/IncIdeas/BitterLesson.html
08:52 PM roycroft: i have most of my parts - the rest will be at the store by 8:30 saturday morning
08:52 PM roycroft: so i guess i'll be getting up early on saturday for the parts run
