01:30 AM Deejay: moin
04:13 AM Tom_L: morning
05:14 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:45 AM JT-Cave: 20% chance of snow today
07:55 AM rdtsc-wk: strong winds later, had to deflate all of the xmas inflatables in the front yard and weight them down (to prevent damage)
07:55 AM JT-Cave: wind 6 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph here
07:56 AM rdtsc-wk: similar; tends to shred inflatables
07:56 AM rdtsc-wk: a couple of them have already been fixed several times before
07:57 AM rdtsc-wk: new fans, new LEDs, ripped fabric repair
07:58 AM rdtsc-wk: guess I'm frugal :)
07:58 AM bjorkintosh: frugal means fewer amazon deliveries.
07:58 AM bjorkintosh: which is better for the environment.
07:59 AM * bjorkintosh should keep that in mind.
07:59 AM rdtsc-wk: although the amazon delivery vans are electric... drivers say they like them
08:00 AM rdtsc-wk: (but where does the electricity come from... probably a fossil-fuel)
08:02 AM JT-Cave: actually if an electric vehicle is charged by fossil fuel generators it's wastes energy due to the conversion loss
08:07 AM JT-Cave: https://youtu.be/7xcpxp33bqk
08:10 AM rdtsc-wk: solar-cell technology is advancing; they're prototyping multi-layer designs with each layer targetting different wavelengths of light - expect to double efficiency "soon"
08:12 AM JT-Cave: that will be nice
08:13 AM JT-Cave: if the energy comes from solar, wind or water it's better
08:13 AM rdtsc-wk: seen lots of video clips of wind turbines on fire, but not a solar farm yet :)
08:16 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:47 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:48 AM rdtsc-wk: there should be an agnostic way to check OS version in python
08:53 AM skunkworks: lol.. Louis Rossmann helps mend it mark..
08:54 AM bjorkintosh: what, are we watching the same damned video at the same time, skunkworks??
08:54 AM skunkworks: lol. It is the algorithm...
08:54 AM bjorkintosh: oh.
09:01 AM JT-Cave: rdtsc-wk, platform.version() returns #1 SMP PREEMPT_RT Debian 6.1.115-1 (2024-11-01)
09:08 AM bjorkintosh: sys.platform -> "linux"
09:08 AM bjorkintosh: sys.platform -> "win32"
09:08 AM bjorkintosh: I don't have a mac for further verification
09:10 AM bjorkintosh: platform.system() -> 'Windows'
09:10 AM bjorkintosh: platform.system() -> 'Linux'
09:11 AM mrec: does anyone have experience with painting a CNC VMC inside?
09:11 AM bjorkintosh: you have options, rdtsc-wk
09:11 AM mrec: I wonder what should be used for that
09:11 AM bjorkintosh: car paint :-D
09:11 AM bjorkintosh: (when in doubt)
09:11 AM mrec: https://s3.amazonaws.com/i.snag.gy/7RGqzb.jpg
09:11 AM bjorkintosh: kidding. it's a pain in the ass if you're not going to dip and bake and do all that crap.
09:11 AM mrec: I think about powder coating
09:12 AM mrec: so far I removed the head cover and I'll probably deliver it within the next days to a neighbour company for powder coating but not sure if that's the right thing to do
09:12 AM mrec: the top head should be okay I think, but the enclosure of the machine I'm not sure
09:13 AM mrec: the machine has a great structure overall so I don't want to let it rot any further
09:42 AM rdtsc-wk: powder coating is tough, as is epoxy
10:37 AM Deejay: re
10:48 AM roycroft: that sinking feeling when you run out of filament 2 layers before a 16 hour, 279 layer job is finished
10:48 AM * roycroft does not enjoy that
11:45 AM bjorkintosh: have any of you DIYed a waterjet yet?
11:49 AM bjorkintosh: somefink like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAIDFaKhcZE
11:50 AM Roguish: waterjet is tough.... very high pressure, and messy, wet
11:51 AM Roguish: but cuts anything
11:52 AM roycroft: i would love to have a waterjet
11:52 AM roycroft: in spite of the messy aspects mentioned above
12:01 PM bjorkintosh: the pumps are a bit expensive, yes.
12:02 PM bjorkintosh: Roguish: treat it like you would a paint booth, or any other mess generating thing.
12:03 PM bjorkintosh: plumbed and contained
12:13 PM Scopeuk: I've seen people try but the water + garnet handling always seams to be a stopping point
12:13 PM bjorkintosh: Scopeuk: the affordability of it?
12:25 PM Scopeuk: Affordability but also technically challenging. The affordability begins to factor in to if you can build a machine. That works and is reliable for less thAn a commerial product
12:25 PM Scopeuk: Wow touch keyboard really butchered that
12:43 PM bjorkintosh: https://shop.waterjetparts.com/collections/all?&page=1
01:08 PM Unterhaus__ is now known as Unterhausen
01:22 PM roycroft: hmm, my laser head is on its way to eugene (again)
01:23 PM roycroft: this will be its third trip to eugene
01:23 PM * roycroft wonders if it is making friends there yet
01:23 PM xxcoder: hopefully its vacation is ending
01:24 PM roycroft: it's been to portland twice
01:28 PM * Tom_L thinks the label stuck to the truck and the box is on the side of the road somewhere
01:29 PM xxcoder: I remember that guy who was angry that his package "orbited" his home city 6 or 7 times
01:29 PM xxcoder: ping ponging between 2 cities, and never arriving at his city
01:33 PM Unterhausen: I was fasting and went to get labs just as they were closing the interstate for a crash. Then the lab told me I should have gone to the place just around the corner from our house
01:39 PM rdtsc-wk: Unter-sight is 20/20
01:49 PM Unterhausen: My wife had told me to go to the place close to our house, so I had to tell her she was right
01:53 PM Tom_L: she already knew that
03:21 PM roycroft: i don't get angry about this stuff
03:21 PM roycroft: i get frustrated at times
03:21 PM roycroft: and i know what's going on
03:21 PM roycroft: the eugene processing center is a major processing hub for this part of the state, but they are not allowed to process any incoming mail except from portland any more
03:21 PM roycroft: if it comes from anywhere else they send it to portland
03:22 PM roycroft: and portland sends it back if eugene is the sorting center for the final delivery address
03:22 PM roycroft: why it was out for delivery in my town and then sent back to eugene instead of being delivered i do not know
03:22 PM roycroft: but once it got sent there i fully expected another round trip to portland
03:23 PM roycroft: because efficiency
03:23 PM rdtsc-wk: 18oz package, 18.54gallons of fuel used to deliver it
03:24 PM roycroft: as long as they're not using those new electric trucks to move it that's fine
03:25 PM roycroft: we must continue to support the oil industry
03:25 PM xxcoder: whats wrong with those el ahh lol
03:25 PM rdtsc-wk: things will change when they can do drone delivery from Portland
03:25 PM roycroft: without our government subsides the industry could not continue to make record profits
03:26 PM roycroft: as long as the drones aren't battery-powered
03:26 PM roycroft: if you put big, inefficient gasoline engines in them that would be fine
03:26 PM rdtsc-wk: (cough cough) sorry, can't breathe with all this smog
03:27 PM xxcoder: so drones should have 4 black smoking engines eh
03:27 PM roycroft: i'm configuring ipv6 on our new server at the moment
03:27 PM roycroft: i haven't done ipv6 stuff in 25 or so years, since back when i was on the 6bone because we were out of ipv4 addresses and the world was going to convert to ipv6 immediately
03:27 PM roycroft: it seems the world is finally starting to do so
03:28 PM roycroft: so it's time to brush up on it and start supporting it on our stuff
03:28 PM xxcoder: yeah. some servers is lagging back on support of that but seems so
03:30 PM roycroft: this doesn't affect me or my boss, but many service providers are using ipv6 natively now, and doing 6to4 tunneling (or a similar protocol) to support ipv4
03:30 PM roycroft: which is really slow
03:30 PM roycroft: so if our websites are only configured for ipv4, anyone with a native ipv6 address is going to have to tunnel to us
03:31 PM roycroft: if i supporb both v6 and v4 they can avoid the tunneling
03:31 PM roycroft: so it seems something i should do
03:31 PM roycroft: i don't think it will be hard to accomplish, and i just built a little test machine for making sure i have the configuration right before provisiong a production server
04:51 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:51 PM roycroft: my home automation stuff just arrived, so i know what i'll be doing after work today
05:17 PM Unterhausen: I put up our christmas lights and wanted to automate them. But I got over it
05:33 PM xxcoder: lol I use one as night lighting now
05:33 PM xxcoder: its that amazing led lighting one. 4 classic colors only
05:33 PM xxcoder: so glad I snagged one, as its sold out till summer 2025
05:34 PM xxcoder: https://www.seasonsreflection.com/vintaglo
06:14 PM Unterhausen: yeah, that company got featured on the dishwasher guy's youtube channel
06:15 PM xxcoder: yep thats how I knew of it
06:15 PM Unterhausen: funny if you search for dishwasher guy youtube his channel comes right up
06:15 PM xxcoder: not surpised
06:16 PM Unterhausen: I subscribed because of led lights, I think
06:16 PM xxcoder: I dont remember, its been years now
06:16 PM Unterhausen: not the christmas variety
06:16 PM Unterhausen: that dishwasher video was boring, but we really hated our dishwasher and he fixed it for us
06:17 PM xxcoder: nice. well if my home had one I'd be using powder, but I dont
06:17 PM xxcoder: not that I actually need it, I wash all my dishes my hand everyday which is usually a plate and fork
06:18 PM xxcoder: heaviest dish load was airfryer pan, small plate, large plate, fork, knife
06:18 PM Unterhausen: the dishwasher soap industry hates powder, the cascade powder box says a pod is 20x better
06:18 PM Unterhausen: like you need 20x the powder to replace a pod. Not sure how that might work
06:18 PM xxcoder: oh and add chopping plate to that
06:19 PM Unterhausen: getting harder to buy powder in stores, they often don't have any
06:20 PM Unterhausen: someone is selling metal 3d printed Sheldon parts now. Even some for my lathe
06:21 PM xxcoder: interesting
06:27 PM xxcoder: I really want a metal printer lol
06:28 PM xxcoder: but very hard to have one, and hard to have setuo around it for safety and operation
06:28 PM roycroft: so already a big win
06:29 PM roycroft: when i go to bed at night, i have to turn a lamp off in my living room, and then stumble across the living room through a hallway to my bedroom in the dark
06:29 PM roycroft: the way to avoid killing myself is to turn on the hallway light first, then turn off the living room lamp
06:29 PM roycroft: now i can do that from my sofa :)
06:29 PM xxcoder: lol nice
06:30 PM * roycroft got three light switches initially - the one for the hall, the one for the front porch light, and one for the dining room light
06:30 PM xxcoder: me, I turn on nightlight in bedroom, walk across to living room unplug the xmas lights and walk back
06:30 PM roycroft: when i get the other two installed i can turn on the porch light and dining room light before i exit my car at night
06:30 PM roycroft: i also just unpacked a whole box of x10 stuff that i haven't seen in decades
06:31 PM roycroft: i wonder if that stuff is collectable yet
06:32 PM roycroft: it's a pain in the butt configuring these switches, but it supposedly has to be done once
06:32 PM roycroft: i have to first provision them with a phone app, which i can run on my ipad
06:32 PM roycroft: connect them to the tp-link "cloud"
06:32 PM roycroft: then i can provision them on my local network
06:32 PM roycroft: then home assisant can find them
06:33 PM roycroft: i think it's worth all the hassle, though, as long as it really is a one-time thing
06:33 PM roycroft: i'm going to use these three for a while, though, before i get any more, but i'd eventually like to replace almost all the light switches in the house with smart switches
06:33 PM xxcoder: I bet
07:06 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
07:09 PM rdtsc: got a 2-pack of AMZ LED Radar Motion Sensor Light Bulbs; put one in the porch light... so far seems to work well (picks up any motion 6-8ft away outside, yet won't penetrate brick and pick up people moving inside.) Gets mixed reviews, mostly from ppl trying to put them in closets (radar penetrates thin doors!)
07:34 PM roycroft: all three of the switches are online and integrated into home assistant
07:34 PM roycroft: so yay
07:35 PM roycroft: and i realized that i'm kind of doing what i did with x10
07:35 PM xxcoder: fancy. I wanted to install some to my house room but moved out since then and current home doesnt support it
07:35 PM roycroft: x10 did not support automation so much - it was mostly about remote control
07:35 PM roycroft: and was very actuator-based
07:35 PM roycroft: i'm focused on actuators with manual control right now
07:36 PM roycroft: but i'll start installing sensors very soon, and automating things
07:36 PM roycroft: although there were a few contortions to go through with these switches, it was actually pretty easy getting them installed and configured
07:37 PM roycroft: and they are cheap - i got a 3 pack for $27, so $9 each
07:37 PM Tom_L: rdtsc, fixed the z clear on the OD threadmill routines. just came in from testing... pretty happy with them now
07:38 PM roycroft: i thought about smart light bulbs, and have not decided yet whether they make sense to me
07:39 PM roycroft: it seems having the sensor, actuator, and device all separate is more flexible than having it all built into a single device
07:39 PM roycroft: but having it all in one is very convenient
07:45 PM Tom_L: what's a good brand of smart bulbs?
07:46 PM roycroft: the phillips ones are supposed to be pretty good
07:47 PM Tom_L: what if there's a cluster of them in one fixture?
07:48 PM roycroft: i think that depends on how you control them
07:49 PM roycroft: with home automation software you can put them all in a group and control the entire group
07:49 PM roycroft: probably most of the cloud-based hubs can do that too
07:49 PM Tom_L: yeah
07:50 PM roycroft: i'm just getting started with home assistant, but so far i'm pretty impressed with it
07:57 PM BorgPipe_ is now known as NetPipe
08:10 PM rdtsc: great work Tom :
08:33 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
10:01 PM {HD}_ is now known as {HD}
11:09 PM Unterhausen: the utube algorithm hates freecad, they keep serving me videos about version .2
