10:34 AM lcnc-relay: <unterhausen@discord> that house should have been wearing high viz
11:17 AM roycroft: well yay, that's encouraging
11:18 AM roycroft: i'm doing an os install, and while it was doing its thing i went out to the shop to see if i could find my confirmant screws and drills
11:18 AM roycroft: and they were exactly where they were supposed to be - it took me 30 seconds to locate them
11:18 AM * roycroft feels a sense of normalcy returning to his life
11:19 AM roycroft: the days of "what box did i put that in and where is the box" are slowly winding down
11:42 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/KwFfvWVrZyyaJKoTXdLLdvPh/1000002624.jpg
11:58 AM rdtsc-wk: nice JT; hopefully the install is easy and fast
12:04 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> Hmmm.... seems to be snowing... 😦

01:33 PM xxcoder: jt dang that cabiet is much bigger than I expected
01:52 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:56 PM roycroft: speaking of cabinets, my morning crisis is handled, and now it's lunch time
01:56 PM roycroft: i can go srew that cabinet together and get ready to install it now
02:28 PM xxcoder: nice
03:18 PM roycroft: grr, we're back to normal
03:19 PM roycroft: i got the cabinet installed over lunch, btw - just one more to install, then i have to find all the hardware and install the doors (and remodel two of them)
03:19 PM roycroft: but the grr was about my boss
03:19 PM roycroft: he just called in a panic "our support website has a critical error and won't run, and we need it right now"
03:19 PM roycroft: "so what did you do to it today?"
03:19 PM roycroft: "nothing"
03:20 PM roycroft: so i found the plugin that caused the site to crash and told him
03:20 PM roycroft: "well, i installed that plugin today but that should not cause a critical error"
03:20 PM roycroft: when i ask "what did you do to it today?" i need an honest answer
03:21 PM roycroft: if i ask "did you do anything that you think might have caused this?" an answer of "no" would be acceptable
03:21 PM roycroft: but the question is useless - any answer would have no meaning, so that's not what i asked
03:22 PM * roycroft deleted the plugin, of course
03:34 PM * rdtsc-wk removes the boss from sudoers
03:34 PM roycroft: were that i could
03:35 PM roycroft: any time i build a new server i get a demand for root access immediately, even when i'm mid-install
03:35 PM roycroft: boss denial is not an option
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> So - he knows enough to be dangerous..
03:35 PM roycroft: so i boss-proof the machines as best i can
03:36 PM roycroft: let's just say he's dangerous :)
03:36 PM rdtsc-wk: daily btrfs snapshots and a rollback command? :)
03:36 PM xxcoder: know enough to be dangerous
03:36 PM xxcoder: immutable systems?
03:37 PM roycroft: on machines where he's actively doing website development i take snapshots of the websites every 10 minutes
03:37 PM roycroft: even though i've been expressly ordered not to
03:37 PM roycroft: how many times i've had to restore one of those snapshots i cannot count
03:37 PM roycroft: or even guess
03:38 PM roycroft: but today's panic was on a production site
03:38 PM roycroft: because, you know, when there's a dev copy of the production site and you're supposed to test things like new plugins and custom code on the dev site first, it's actually better to just go for it on production and then panic when it breaks
03:39 PM roycroft: my boss is not alone in this kind of behavior, though
03:39 PM roycroft: i deal with it all the time
03:39 PM roycroft: and when stuff breaks there's always deflection and blaming others
03:39 PM roycroft: and never introspection
03:39 PM xxcoder: oh boy if you ever retire, I wonder how long company would last
03:40 PM roycroft: well my boss is pretty maga
03:40 PM roycroft: and he has his base
03:40 PM roycroft: they will never leave him, no matter what
03:40 PM roycroft: it won't thrive, but it would probably survive and limp along
03:41 PM xxcoder: fun
03:41 PM roycroft: now he wants me to drop what i'm doing and configure our network monitor software to monitor for broken websites, and inform him when one breaks
03:42 PM roycroft: which would take a day or two, since i'd have to install some hooks in every website to do that
03:42 PM roycroft: how about this:
03:42 PM roycroft: if you're going to do something scary,
03:42 PM xxcoder: wonder if he will finally notice that website down happens right after the "fixes or upgrades"
03:42 PM roycroft: 1. back up the thing you're dealing with
03:42 PM roycroft: 2. do the scary thing
03:42 PM roycroft: 3. test to see if you broke it
03:42 PM roycroft: 4. if you broke it, restore the backup
03:43 PM roycroft: the problem with that system, though, is that i consider almost any change to be "scary"
03:43 PM roycroft: and my boss doesn't think anything in the universe is "scary"
03:44 PM xxcoder: in least websites you guys seem to deal with isnt extreme uptime requirements, like 5 9 or whatever
03:44 PM roycroft: so he knows the drill, but when he goes to do somthing he says to himself "this is not scary, so i don't have to worry about it"
03:44 PM roycroft: then it breaks
03:44 PM xxcoder: *5 of 9s
03:44 PM roycroft: oh, we would never get a contract that require 5 nines uptime
03:45 PM roycroft: although we do provide that level of service to some customers
03:45 PM roycroft: but only network infrastructure, which even my boss knows is too specialized and scary to mess with
03:46 PM roycroft: so yeah, the city water plant has 5 nines uptime, because it's all network management on our end, and my boss does not have access to the network gear
03:46 PM roycroft: but when we hosted the city's website it was down all the time
03:46 PM roycroft: maybe that's why we still manage their network but not their website or email
03:50 PM JT-Shop: the giant enclosure is bolted to the floor at the job site
03:52 PM * rdtsc-wk proposes JT's nickname be "flash" or "speedy"
03:52 PM xxcoder: was wondering a little if wall would be strong enough lol
03:54 PM JT-Shop: a guy at one plant called me Mr. Wizard LOL
03:54 PM JT-Shop: xxcoder, wall?
03:55 PM xxcoder: 🤣
03:55 PM xxcoder: yeah I thought it would be mounted on wall, that huge cabiet
04:00 PM JT-Shop: https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/KwFfvWVrZyyaJKoTXdLLdvPh/1000002624.jpg
04:00 PM JT-Shop: xxcoder, I built a 2x2 steel frame to support the box and bolted that to the floor
04:00 PM JT-Shop: the black bits
04:01 PM xxcoder: nice design indeed
04:01 PM Tom_L: as usual
04:01 PM xxcoder: yup
04:08 PM JT-Shop: thanks
04:08 PM JT-Shop: truck and trailer put away time to relax
04:09 PM JT-Shop: gotta take the hoist apart and carry it back to the other shop
04:15 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auj1rKsIDkM
04:22 PM xxcoder: amazing isnt it
05:03 PM JT-Shop: I think it's going to take a day to just put everything away
05:05 PM roycroft: tidying up can take time
05:06 PM roycroft: my pickup bed is still full of stuff from the garden shed at the old place from sunday
05:07 PM roycroft: fortunately it's not been raining very hard, and the rain is supposed to stop tonight for several days, so i should be able to put it all away in the new garden shed soon without too much dealing with water
05:07 PM roycroft: when these cabinets are installed it's going to take hours to tidy up the studio and reorganize things, but most, if not all, of the moving boxes should finally go away from that room
05:08 PM JT-Shop: been a long journey for you
05:10 PM Tom_L: bet you're glad to have that box out of the shop
05:11 PM JT-Shop: yup it's huge to get it out of here
05:11 PM Tom_L: they were probably glad to get it too
05:12 PM JT-Shop: actually the work to connect it all up doesn't look too bad and they are up and running somewhat so no rush now
05:12 PM Tom_L: good
05:12 PM Tom_L: have you programmed it already or do you do that there?
05:12 PM xxcoder: nice
05:13 PM JT-Shop: actually the plc is only a way to get a fault signal from the drive to the hmi so not any programming yet
05:16 PM JT-Shop: eventually I'll have a prox on each shaft and make sure it's turning
05:17 PM Tom_L: you'll have to build mounts etc for those i assume
05:17 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:17 PM JT-Shop: and each one will be different
05:17 PM xxcoder: very bespoken I guess
05:17 PM JT-Shop: the main thing is to get all 7 motors connected to the control before the end of the year
05:18 PM JT-Shop: so I can invoice for the second 50%
05:19 PM Tom_L: sounds like some fairly lengthy cable runs
05:19 PM JT-Shop: not very long about 30' for the first tank
05:22 PM Tom_L: pm
05:22 PM Tom_L: something i found out today
05:39 PM roycroft: i should head off to town to do some grocery shopping
05:39 PM roycroft: tomorrow it's going to be a zoo at all the markets
05:40 PM roycroft: then a nice, four-day weekend
05:40 PM xxcoder: had to go in sunday lol it was really full
05:41 PM JT-Shop: I need to get one more piece of uni-strut tomorrow
05:43 PM roycroft: i have this tax refund check sitting here too
05:43 PM * xxcoder grabs it
05:43 PM roycroft: i might as well get it deposited and start collecting interest on it - it's not making me any money sitting on my desk
05:45 PM * JT-Shop celebrates getting the control system out of here with hot dogs
06:04 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> I should call it a day...
08:17 PM xxcoder: charging up my first lifepo4 batteries lol
08:18 PM xxcoder: got 2 to replace my ups dying lead batteries
09:00 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@discord> Simultaneous 5 axis machining using LinuxCNC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zV-egXR2zEE
09:03 PM xxcoder: first battery charged already, I guess it wasnt too low charge. charging second now
09:04 PM xxcoder: zinc thats cool
09:14 PM Tom_L: cool video.. what cad cam did you use for that?
09:24 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
09:43 PM * roycroft will be happy when he gets 3 axes working
09:46 PM xxcoder: I wonder how long second battery will be charging lol. first one took couple hours
09:46 PM xxcoder: hour and half really
09:47 PM roycroft: i should put my jackery on the solar charger
09:47 PM roycroft: maybe it will charge by may :)
09:47 PM xxcoder: :)
09:49 PM xxcoder: my 2 batteries is both 12v 10a small battery type
09:58 PM xxcoder: kinda wondering why there arent higher voltage lifepo4 batteries
09:59 PM xxcoder: 120v 10ah woukld last a hour at 10amp at full 120v
10:02 PM CloudEvil: 48 is common
10:02 PM xxcoder: oh second battery just finished. awesome
10:06 PM xxcoder: cloud thats cool. too bad my ups dont accept 48v
10:34 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@discord> @Tom_L I used Fusion for the CAM. Still working out the kinks in the flow as 5 axis strategies take a bit more setup.
