04:48 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:21 AM Tom_L: morning
05:22 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/hole_mill.mkv
05:41 AM JT-Cave: sweet
05:42 AM Tom_L: gonna try to put that in the circular pattern now
05:42 AM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
05:45 AM Tom_L: can you use polar coord on an arc?
05:48 AM JT-Cave: dunno
05:48 AM JT-Cave: you might move to the center to exit the hole
05:48 AM Tom_L: the reposition with the ^ degrees?
05:49 AM Tom_L: oh on the helix
05:50 AM JT-Cave: yeah
06:10 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/Hole_mill2.mkv
06:18 AM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
06:27 AM JT-Cave: cool
06:34 AM JT-Cave: well the package from AD that I needed is stuck in Memphis...
07:16 AM jfsimon1981 is now known as jfsimon
08:30 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:49 AM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
08:51 AM rdtsc: cool indeed; nice Tom :)
08:53 AM rdtsc: dang xxcoder that's awful
09:48 AM Tom_L: does lcnc have a pi constant?
09:48 AM Tom_L: for gcode
09:50 AM Tom_L: hard to search for because all you get is ras PI :/
09:55 AM JT-Shop: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/gcode/overview.html#gcode:functions
09:56 AM JT-Shop: don't see one
09:56 AM Tom_L: i didn't see it there
09:56 AM Tom_L: oh skip it.. it would take longer to find it than to make one
09:56 AM Tom_L: gonna make the hole mill for the circular pattern for recessed bolts
09:56 AM Tom_L: try anyway
09:57 AM JT-Shop: I'm gonna cut two square holes in the side of the enclosure and try and mount the ac
09:57 AM Tom_L: measure 2x cut 1x :)
09:58 AM Tom_L: maybe wait to mount the AC... it might give you a place to reach in to mount the subpannel back
09:59 AM Tom_L: sounds like you're goin strong on that project
09:59 AM JT-Shop: yup that might be a good idea to mount the subpanel first

12:47 PM rdtsc: wonder what that was all about
12:48 PM rdtsc: FreeCAD guys have been real busy... onto 1.0 RC4 already
12:50 PM xxcoder: yup!
01:03 PM Tom_L: this math shit is for the birds!
01:04 PM xxcoder: no way. crows is smart enough to have revenge, dont teach them math
01:06 PM rdtsc: "crow drops live grenade onto pest control truck from 100ft"
01:07 PM rdtsc: freecad
01:16 PM roycroft: xxcoder: do you have any information at all about the bob and spindle controller for that router?
01:16 PM roycroft: each of them has "mach3" printed on the pcb, and the rest is chinese
01:17 PM roycroft: the spindle controller is of greater interest, as i'll use a 7i96 in lieu of the bob
01:18 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/TeqPSdfgsiHECZCgRkChIngs/1000002572.jpg
01:24 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:25 PM * rdtsc hands JT a deburring tool
01:26 PM rdtsc: lookin' "sharp" :)
01:31 PM Tom_L: no returning it now
01:39 PM roycroft: this is odd - all the 53mm spindles i've found max out at 12,000rpm, like the one i have
01:39 PM roycroft: it seems to me that smaller spindles would support higher speeds, as one would tend to use small cutters in them
01:40 PM xxcoder: one you have is 27,000 mx if I recall right but could be 17,000
01:41 PM xxcoder: unless the spindle youre talking about is on the cnc router you got from me, then I misremembered badly
01:41 PM roycroft: that's the one i'm talking about
01:41 PM roycroft: and it's 12,000rpm
01:41 PM xxcoder: ok
01:42 PM roycroft: i guess that means i have to move really slowly when using tiny cutters
01:43 PM roycroft: which is probably a good idea with so small a machine anyway
01:44 PM roycroft: there's not a lot of mass to help keep the machine rigid
01:45 PM xxcoder: yeah I was thinking maybe I could add fins on sides of gantry to make it more rigid side to side
01:49 PM roycroft: i'll see how it goes when i get it running
01:49 PM roycroft: as long as i don't push it too hard i think it's capable of doing a decent job
01:50 PM xxcoder: yeah
02:32 PM Tom_L: best way to read current coordinates to variables?
02:33 PM JT-Shop: absolute or relative
02:33 PM JT-Shop: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/gcode/overview.html#sub:system-parameters
02:34 PM Tom_L: ahh nevermind.. i'll use G92
02:34 PM Tom_L: simpler
02:34 PM JT-Shop: yup
02:44 PM Tom_L: mmm while loop isn't looping
03:26 PM Tom_L: getting closer
03:49 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:53 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/hole_mill_pattern.mkv
03:54 PM JT-Shop: sweet
03:57 PM Tom_L: i kept messin with arc coordinates and decided this was easier
04:09 PM roycroft: the snow line is right outside town on all sides today
04:09 PM roycroft: it's kind of weird seeing it in all directions like that
04:09 PM xxcoder: fun
04:09 PM roycroft: but it's nowhere near ground level here - it's at least 200m higher
04:10 PM roycroft: my first winter here is going to be an interesting experience, i'm sure
04:12 PM xxcoder: yup. pack for couple weeks emergacy no power food
05:34 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:02 PM roycroft: well there's a ray's in town
06:02 PM roycroft: coast prices and coast variety, but it's close enough that i can walk there
06:02 PM roycroft: i do keep a pretty decent pantry, and try to keep the freezer full of meals i can microwave, but groceries should not be a problem
06:03 PM roycroft: a prolonged power outage, on the other hand, would be a problem
06:03 PM roycroft: and i think it's going to be a while before i can install a big generator
06:03 PM roycroft: plus, there is no natural gas here, so when i do install the big generator, it will have to be propane, and i'll need a big propane tank
06:09 PM xxcoder: oh boy. im sure snow would stop solar panels too
06:12 PM Tom_L: get rich.. make heated solar pannels
06:12 PM xxcoder: theres self heating ones I think but it need to be clear at morning
06:34 PM xxcoder: https://youtu.be/m5rCeX_ll1o yorkshire on decades old door
06:35 PM xxcoder: man so much paint crust
06:50 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/hole_drill_counterbore.mkv
07:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Tom_L: cool - the only thing I would say is you would want a peck option.
07:09 PM Tom_L: yeah i thought about that
07:10 PM xxcoder: dweel?
07:11 PM xxcoder: dweel isnt exactly common used option for drill
07:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> dwell?
07:11 PM xxcoder: oops yes
07:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> lol - It almost looked right to me..
07:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/zLJuQcLofdyhYqAxDQikTzHf/PXL_20241116_195238168.MP.jpg
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> (the size is reversed...)
07:16 PM xxcoder: lol
07:17 PM xxcoder: craftsman used to be good stuff
07:17 PM xxcoder: then they went to crap
07:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> sure.. that wrench is probably from the late 40's
07:17 PM roycroft: it's the lowe's effect
07:18 PM xxcoder: yep old. actually engraved
07:18 PM roycroft: anything that gets carried by lowe's immediately goes down in quality
07:18 PM xxcoder: I think it went down over decade ago, while still at sears
07:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> older than that.. Dad was taking breaker bars back in the 80's
07:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> yet - we have never broken the ones from before that.
07:20 PM * roycroft has some broken craftsman ratches that sears refused to replace
07:20 PM Tom_L: quality control was off that day
07:20 PM roycroft: ratchets, rather
07:20 PM roycroft: ratchets wear out
07:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> although - I bought a 'speedway' set from one of those roadside places... They are amazing
07:20 PM Tom_L: finally had to replace the cmos battery in my old dos box
07:21 PM roycroft: even proto and snap-on ratchets wear out
07:21 PM Tom_L: i need to stick the heads of a couple in the ultrasonic cleaner and relube them
07:21 PM Tom_L: they're gettin kinda sluggish
07:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/ILUsCxkvSQUIgHCHXKNdPnHH/PXL_20241116_215337689.jpg
07:22 PM xxcoder: lol by "decade ago" I meant lates 1990s. 👴
07:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> I feel you...
07:23 PM roycroft: peter parfitt has a new product out - the parf "protractor"
07:23 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/temp/wrench1.jpg
07:23 PM roycroft: it works with the 2nd generation parf guide, and lets one set up angle cuts with a resolution of 1/2 degree, and an accuracy of better than 0.1 degree
07:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> I have been cutting up and splitting wood that the tree guy took down. I am sore
07:24 PM xxcoder: its looking more and more like "I forgot what dry road color is" kind of winter than dry ones last few years
07:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Tom_L: cool!
07:24 PM Tom_L: old ford
07:25 PM xxcoder: thats cool tools tom
07:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/ClxSQjPrUzQPjZcEAvnXgDpS/PXL_20241117_011723019.jpg
07:26 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, i'll have to get jt to fix up a check box widget to use a var so i can switch between peck
07:26 PM Tom_L: or figure something else out
07:26 PM xxcoder: so glad I took time to empty tank yeserday even when I am still sick. today it would be nightmare to do because of very heavy and dark rain
07:27 PM roycroft: the rain has started here
07:27 PM roycroft: it appears it might stop in may
07:27 PM xxcoder: roy btw I wasnt sick when I met you, I think drive stressed me out and made me weak and I got sick a day after I returned home
07:28 PM roycroft: yeah, you did not look sick then
07:28 PM roycroft: it's a long drive
07:28 PM xxcoder: plus constant shaking of vision for hours lol bad on my brain
07:28 PM roycroft: and btw, your drive was almost exactly as long as mine
07:28 PM roycroft: that realy was meeting up halfway
07:28 PM xxcoder: yeah I just picked a random location. "mall? sure mall"
07:29 PM xxcoder: I had overnighted at my bro home then drove 30 min down to meet you
07:29 PM roycroft: washington square was fine, except the construction on 217 maked fir a long, weird detour
07:29 PM roycroft: and the detour was not signed well, so i missed one of the turns and did not figure that out for a few minutes
07:29 PM xxcoder: gonna love gps. not only place, but almost precise spot I would park at
07:30 PM roycroft: that was as close as i like to get to malls, generally :)
07:30 PM roycroft: a rendez-vous in the outer parking lot is fine
07:30 PM xxcoder: :) I walked around there to take a break, and to get small gift for my mom birthday. bday is end of month but I arent driving hours again
07:59 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, peck works now i just gotta figure out how to switch between them
08:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Tom_L: wow - nice job.. Ugh - I am going to have to try flexui
08:00 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, i though about using the q word.. if it's empty use G81 and if Q has a value use G83 peck
08:00 PM Tom_L: what do you think?
08:00 PM Tom_L: right now there's not a way to signal which to use
08:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> sounds good!
08:01 PM Tom_L: i'll post another eye full here in a bit
08:18 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/Hole_drill_peck.mkv
08:19 PM Tom_L: better?
08:23 PM rdtsc: Very nice Tom! Working on prints today here
08:24 PM Tom_L: rdtsc, did you see the counterbore cycle for it too?
08:25 PM rdtsc: yes, opens up even more possibilies
08:26 PM Tom_L: skunkworks thought i needed a peck cycle too
08:27 PM Tom_L: set it so if there is a Q word >0 it pecks and if Q is 0 normal drill cycle
08:30 PM rdtsc: ever try thread milling Tom?
08:31 PM rdtsc: pricey... https://www.mcmaster.com/products/thread-mills/
08:32 PM Tom_L: yeah
08:33 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Brass_cup/Brass_Cups7.jpg
08:33 PM Tom_L: random thread size made to fit
08:34 PM ChrisC49 is now known as digiex_chris
08:34 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/thread_mills/Thread_mill3.jpg
08:35 PM rdtsc: the brass cup reminds me of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLDpWrwijE8 :)
08:35 PM Tom_L: https://www.lakeshorecarbide.com/threadmills.aspx
08:36 PM Tom_L: they might be a bit cheaper
08:36 PM Tom_L: i like their cutters though
08:37 PM Tom_L: https://onlinecarbide.com/
08:37 PM rdtsc: a bit cheaper, and they have far more sizes than mcmaster
08:37 PM Tom_L: i have some of their mills too
08:37 PM Tom_L: the both have expanded their product line since i shopped
08:38 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/Carbide_comparison1.jpg
08:38 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/Carbide_comparison2.jpg
08:40 PM Tom_L: i wrote a macro for my cad cam to generate for a thread mill
08:40 PM Tom_L: i suppose all the new ones have it built in
08:41 PM rdtsc: lots of selection between those two :)
08:41 PM Tom_L: git yer wallet out
08:42 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Smartcam/arc_leadin_percent1.jpg
08:42 PM Tom_L: both inside and outside profiles
08:43 PM Tom_L: you can select the passes
08:44 PM rdtsc: would rather have a few good (expensive) tools that work reliably, rather than eBay cheapos which fail and cause headaches
08:44 PM Tom_L: you tear up a bit when you snap one
08:44 PM Tom_L: but it makes you careful
08:45 PM Tom_L: i like both their 3 flute em
08:45 PM xxcoder: its sometimes good to have you can abuse
08:45 PM xxcoder: like something that you dont wanna use good tools on
08:46 PM Tom_L: bad cutters make bad parts
08:47 PM rdtsc: I'll get an ebay ball mill, but for cutting foam :)
08:47 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/corner_rounding2.jpg
08:47 PM Tom_L: those are nice too
08:48 PM rdtsc: when a chamfer just isn't good enough :)
08:49 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/60deg_3flute2.jpg
08:49 PM Tom_L: high helix steel cutters
08:50 PM rdtsc: bet those work exceptionally well
08:50 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/60Deg_3Flute_3500R_F30_Finish.jpg
08:50 PM Tom_L: decent finish
08:51 PM Tom_L: i was grinding up some aluminum testing cutters one day
08:52 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/carbide_6flute1.jpg
08:52 PM Tom_L: my kid brings home some odd one sometimes
08:52 PM Tom_L: stuff they're tossing
08:52 PM Tom_L: for Ti etc
08:53 PM rdtsc: 6-flute, high MRR on a big, strong machine
08:54 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/cutter5.jpg
08:54 PM Tom_L: i had an idea....
08:54 PM Tom_L: those were free
08:54 PM xxcoder: disk thrower ;)
08:55 PM rdtsc: water power turbine impeller? :)
08:55 PM xxcoder: tom cutters I agree, good ones only. I meant something like wrench etcv
08:56 PM Tom_L: not sure where to head next on this ops thing
08:57 PM Tom_L: just trying to flex flex
08:57 PM xxcoder: flex on flex all you want
08:57 PM xxcoder: it seems awesome so far
08:57 PM rdtsc: or when you don't know what the material is xxcoder... fried an end mill more than once that way
08:59 PM rdtsc: well, it's magnetic, and marks with a file, should be cuttable... *sparks*
08:59 PM xxcoder: never had that problem, company always assigned materials
09:03 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cincinnati/Ti_part.jpg
09:03 PM Tom_L: woops
09:04 PM Tom_L: i think that was a 2" cutter in Ti
09:04 PM xxcoder: 2" endmill?
09:04 PM xxcoder: sounds expensive
09:04 PM Tom_L: shell
09:04 PM Tom_L: it was
09:05 PM rdtsc: hopefully it had inserts
09:05 PM Tom_L: they raise an eyebrow though if you crash a $100k spindle
09:05 PM Tom_L: it destroyed the whole cutter
09:06 PM rdtsc: ouch
09:06 PM xxcoder: reminds me of that "fun" time when blackout happened. the 12" facemill got dropped into part (not far, it was cutting)
09:06 PM Tom_L: he'd gone on break and the guy that was to watch it didn't
09:06 PM xxcoder: it destroyed all inserts
09:07 PM xxcoder: it was good type. $60 each?
09:07 PM xxcoder: forgot count but it was over 10
09:07 PM xxcoder: part was scrapped and it was expensive one too lol
09:07 PM xxcoder: glad it wasnt me there
09:07 PM Tom_L: he saved that part
09:07 PM xxcoder: nice
09:08 PM rdtsc: hopefully no cutter guts left in the titanium
09:08 PM Tom_L: that stuff he's milling now is way more expensive than Ti
09:08 PM xxcoder: inocel?
09:08 PM Tom_L: that weird alum alloy
09:08 PM Tom_L: no
09:09 PM Tom_L: they setup on 7075 or such before they run any
09:09 PM Tom_L: it costs that much
09:09 PM xxcoder: expensive allright
09:09 PM Tom_L: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium%E2%80%93lithium_alloys
09:10 PM xxcoder: wow
09:10 PM Tom_L: it corrodes bad though
09:12 PM rdtsc: saw that, what is it, ruby? can be used to cut copper and give a mirror finish... use isopropyl alcohol as mist coolant of all things
09:12 PM Tom_L: there's somewhat of a list of applications
09:13 PM Tom_L: ok, gonna r&r a bit
09:14 PM rdtsc: likewise, everyone have a good night
09:15 PM xxcoder: laters :)
09:16 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
