08:41 AM rdtsc-wk: Nice JT! Every day, more features :)
08:54 AM JT-Shop: thanks to Tom_L for sorting out the code
09:11 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> Hmm no power
09:52 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> hmm - that rememds me - I should get the generator setup.
09:53 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> wonder if the kholer still works.. It is 7kva old school.

10:10 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
10:51 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/yzFWAuvtlypYvCaPyBZUmbAV/1000002571.jpg
10:53 AM JT-Shop: skunk it's a 2 cyl diesel 10kva 3 phase generator
11:20 AM roycroft: i just ordered an environmental monitor hat for a rpi
11:20 AM roycroft: it does not come with a particulate sensor, but one can be added to it
11:20 AM roycroft: i think that will work well in my shop
11:21 AM roycroft: as well, i don't have a home alarm system at this point, and have been thinking about installing one ever since i moved here
11:21 AM roycroft: crime is low in this town, but there also aren't many cops
11:22 AM roycroft: now that i'm working on the environment monitor project with the rpi, it occurs to me that an alarm system using an rpi as the main controller and arduinos connected to sensors in the various rooms might make sense
11:30 AM tofohty1 is now known as tofohty
11:37 AM rdtsc-wk: If you dare go down that rabbit-hole, check out https://www.home-assistant.io
11:38 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> JT-Shop: nice! 3 phase.. (don't have one)
11:39 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> the Kohleris a 2 cylinder onan..
11:39 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> lol
11:39 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Kohler...
11:50 AM lcnc-relay: <gardenweazel@discord> Morning/afternoon all
11:51 AM lcnc-relay: <gardenweazel@discord> Is this linuxcnc iov2 document page still relevant? https://linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/man/man1/iov2.1.html
11:51 AM lcnc-relay: <gardenweazel@discord> Or is it safe to ignore?
12:11 PM Unterhausen: I bought a new monitor, and now I'm playing a game called, "where are the screws?"
12:12 PM Unterhausen: monitor manufacturers probably laugh themselves silly thinking about it
12:13 PM roycroft: thanks
12:30 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> rdtsc-wk: i already use Home Assistant, and love it 🙂
12:37 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader@discord> I have Home Assistant running in a Proxmox VM. Most of my stuff is still on an OLD SmartThing hub. I really need to get to transitioning everything to it.
12:38 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> i run on Proxmox too.
12:38 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader@discord> It is a good way to go for sure
12:39 PM roycroft: i run most stuff under pve
12:39 PM roycroft: it's just so much better than running on bare iron
12:39 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader@discord> agreed
12:39 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> yes, and HA is good for setting the shop temp before getting out there 😉
12:39 PM roycroft: the ability to do snapshots right before doing something scary is alone justification for running in pve
12:40 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader@discord> I currently have 4 nodes, but as soon as I get 2 of the newer ones memory upgraded, I am shutting down the oldest.
12:40 PM roycroft: that's down the road a bit, travis_farmer, but it's in my plans
12:40 PM roycroft: i think my shop heater can take an external thermostat
12:40 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader@discord> I wish my shop was heated, alas, I work in the cold during the winter.
12:40 PM roycroft: it would be nice to get up in the morning, turn the shop heater on from my office while i'm sipping my cappuccino, and have it toasty warm by the time i wander out to the shop
12:42 PM roycroft: we're having an inter-deluge interval today
12:42 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> it is very nice. unfortunatly my heater is controlled by an older Arduino "thermostat" i made, and it needs a reset after power failures. i will be upgrading it to ESPhome
12:43 PM roycroft: but 15mm of rain tomorrow, and 42mm on sunday
12:43 PM roycroft: i think i can remodel my dust colletor in situ, but that would require standing outside the shed and reaching inside to do the work, so today is probably the day to do that
12:44 PM * roycroft often has to reset his priorities based on the weather
12:44 PM roycroft: there's a slight chance of snow on monday
12:45 PM roycroft: i'm at 350m elevation now - when i lived in eugene i was at 150m
12:45 PM roycroft: so i expect a fair amount more snow than i've been used to
12:45 PM xxcoder: what is "snow"?
12:45 PM xxcoder: ;)
12:46 PM xxcoder: its so rare here in tacoma
12:46 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> i think i am around 300ft
12:46 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader@discord> snow <- 4 letter word.
12:46 PM xxcoder: I remember someone calling it white plague
12:46 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> <-- hates snow
12:47 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader@discord> me too, lol
12:47 PM roycroft: the chain sign has been up just outside town for two weeks now
12:47 PM roycroft: you live in the wrong part of the country for hating on snow, travis_farmer
12:47 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> yes, i know, Maine. LOL
12:48 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader@discord> SW Ohio here. The amount we get varies from year to year. Some years we can get really slammed, others barely anything
12:48 PM xxcoder: just drive south with snowplow in front till someone asks what it is
12:48 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> lol
12:50 PM roycroft: i'm not sure what to expect here
12:51 PM roycroft: 350m is the same elevation as the south hills in eugene
12:51 PM roycroft: so think i should expect as much snow as in the south hills
12:51 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> dang, thats about 1150ft, you may get a pounding in snow
12:52 PM roycroft: but i'm also right next to the mountains - the road through town turns vertical just east of town - and because of that we get a lot more rain than in the valley
12:52 PM roycroft: which probably translates to a lot more snow
12:52 PM roycroft: storms mostly come in from the west
12:52 PM roycroft: but when they hit the mountains they stall
12:53 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> yeah, if you are on the compression side of a mountain, you get a lot of snow
12:58 PM roycroft: we'll see
12:58 PM roycroft: it's that time of year
12:58 PM * roycroft might have his first white christmas in decades
12:59 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> are you going to plow or snow-blow?
01:00 PM xxcoder: or jet engine it?
01:00 PM roycroft: neither
01:00 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> ???
01:00 PM roycroft: i don't even have a snow shovel - i should probably get one
01:00 PM roycroft: but if it snows, i'll probably stay home
01:00 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcoder@discord> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/wedXPZArlHvceOzBTqCWszVH/russians-clear-their-aircraft-carriers-with-this-huge-jet-powered-vacuum-cleaner-94561_1.png
01:00 PM roycroft: my pickup is 4wd, and has some really knobby tires
01:01 PM roycroft: it will do ok in the snow, especially if i put some ballast over the rear axle
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> what if you get 4ft of snow that last all season?
01:01 PM roycroft: i'm sure the town does not own a snow blower
01:01 PM roycroft: we won't
01:01 PM roycroft: odot will plow highway 58
01:01 PM roycroft: but nothing else will be plowed
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> different world here... if you don't have a plow or snow-blower you may as well be stuck for winter
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> <-- note to self: time to install snow-blower on the old JD tractor...
01:04 PM roycroft: about a half hour east of here that is the case
01:04 PM roycroft: as highway 58 turns vertical just outside of town
01:05 PM roycroft: willamette pass is about a half hour east, and is at 1500m elevatin
01:05 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> that's a proper mountain!
01:05 PM roycroft: yes
01:05 PM roycroft: unlike those little bumps you have back east :P
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> 😛
01:06 PM xxcoder: hills with delusions of grandeur
01:06 PM roycroft: and that's just the pass elevation
01:07 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> we have Mt Washington, next door...
01:07 PM roycroft: diamond peak is the mountain nearest the pass, and it's 2700m
01:07 PM roycroft: and it's one of the lower peaks in the central oregon cascades
01:07 PM roycroft: mt washington is barely higher than willamette pass
01:07 PM xxcoder: pictures of flat land makes me feel little bit weird. here you cant see any distance without seeing mountains
01:08 PM roycroft: but iirc it gets some of the nastiest weather in the continental united states
01:08 PM roycroft: one of my favorite alt country bands are the flatlanders
01:08 PM roycroft: they hail from lubbock
01:08 PM roycroft: i remember they were describing lubbock once at a concert
01:08 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> yeah, the north-east gets nasty weather as the jet stream carries in in
01:09 PM xxcoder: when I was on train trip to ark, I remember feeling like I could see 2 states away because land was so flat
01:09 PM roycroft: one of them said "in lubbock, if you stand on your tippy-toes you can see the next town"
01:09 PM roycroft: and another said "yeah, and if you stand on a tuna can you can see the next county"
01:09 PM roycroft: lubbock is in the texas panhandle, if you're not familiar with it
01:10 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> i wasn't 😉
01:11 PM roycroft: it's a town in the middle of nowhere that has raised some amazing musicians - buddy holly, delbert mcclinton, jimmy dale gilmore, joe ely, butch hancock, natalie maines, bobby keys, pat davis amongst others
01:12 PM roycroft: it's a really long list
01:12 PM roycroft: i guess when you're in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do, making music is a good way to pass the time
01:12 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> i bet 😉
01:14 PM roycroft: xxcoder: so i'm thinking about getting that little cnc router going soon
01:14 PM roycroft: you think the stepper motors should be upgraded
01:14 PM roycroft: would the existing no-name drives work with them, do you think?
01:14 PM * roycroft has not done any research on the drives yet
01:14 PM xxcoder: I do, but trobleshooting was problemic for me, id suggest just do quick tests see how well it works.
01:14 PM roycroft: i think i'll clean it up and lube it
01:15 PM xxcoder: tb6600 isnt best drivers, it was very cheap
01:15 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> <-- likes Leadshine drives, for cheap drives
01:15 PM roycroft: i have a set of gecko drives that i bought for my bigger cnc router that i haven't built yet
01:15 PM roycroft: worst case i can use those
01:15 PM xxcoder: yeah machine has standard nemo mounts
01:15 PM roycroft: the drives that came with this look like leadshine, but they are not branded
01:16 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> well, i am off to insulate my alarm systems battery box for the winter...
01:16 PM roycroft: i need to record the model numbers and try to look them up online
01:16 PM roycroft: i would really like to get that thing going soon
01:17 PM roycroft: i have the controller for the big cnc router pretty much prototyped
01:17 PM roycroft: i can scavage parts from it to make the little router work
01:17 PM xxcoder: nice
01:17 PM roycroft: my stepper motors for the bigger router are nema23, and the little one has nema17, so i can't just swap in my motors
01:18 PM xxcoder: yeah sounds like very low cost bootstrap
01:18 PM roycroft: but that's ok - if i need bigger nema17 motors i can get them
01:18 PM xxcoder: thought cnc router had nema 23
01:18 PM roycroft: hmm
01:18 PM roycroft: i'll have to look at it agian - i thought they were nema 17
01:19 PM Unterhausen: I bought the original shapoko for amusement, never got it running. Some of the assembly instructions were only on a wiki, which carbide 3d memory-holed
01:20 PM xxcoder: huh why hide instructions?
01:20 PM Unterhausen: they don't want to admit that thing ever existed, I think
01:21 PM xxcoder: web archive?
01:21 PM Unterhausen: is it back up?
01:21 PM xxcoder: yep
01:23 PM roycroft: yeah, they are nema 23
01:23 PM roycroft: they looked smaller than that
01:23 PM roycroft: so i have bigger motors, i think
01:23 PM roycroft: although i'm not sure they should be necessary
01:23 PM roycroft: maybe they just need more voltage
01:23 PM xxcoder: lol ok. yeah too small and gimpy for cnc router I thought.
01:23 PM xxcoder: maybe
01:24 PM roycroft: you have a 24v power supply on the thing
01:24 PM roycroft: i have a spare 48v supply
01:24 PM xxcoder: cool :)
01:24 PM roycroft: although iirc, with steppers, higher voltage usually means you can run the motor faster
01:24 PM xxcoder: not sure what b6600 rating is
01:24 PM xxcoder: tb6600
01:24 PM roycroft: but maybe the power supply is not supplying enough current
01:24 PM roycroft: anyway, i should have options, and almost everything i need i should have in stock
01:25 PM roycroft: there's some kind of controller board attached to the spindle
01:25 PM xxcoder: yeah. volt 0-10 to control speed if I recall right. sadly its psu is lost
01:26 PM roycroft: yeah, it has two power wires coming off of it that go nowhere
01:26 PM roycroft: but a psu is easy, and i may have one
01:27 PM roycroft: i need to unsort the spaghetti mess of wires, label things, and document what is there
01:27 PM roycroft: then i can come up with a plan to get it going
01:27 PM roycroft: you have me two sets of er11 collets
01:27 PM roycroft: gave me, rather
01:27 PM roycroft: so i should be fine with that
01:27 PM xxcoder: yah it was testing wiring. I had plans (or concepts of plan? lol) to redo it properly once I had it working properly
01:28 PM xxcoder: it mostly follows on colors but some is just nmess
01:28 PM roycroft: they're both metric, but since er collets have a pretty wide working range, i'm sure i can use 1/16" and 1/8" diameter cutters with the metric collets
01:28 PM roycroft: it's going to be easy to document
01:28 PM roycroft: it's just that the wires are kind of tangled up right now
01:29 PM roycroft: in one of my trips with attic stuff that i recently made was a bunch of electrical boxes
01:29 PM roycroft: i'm sure one of them will work fine for holding the drives and other components for the controller
01:29 PM xxcoder: yeah
01:30 PM roycroft: the biggest problem will be finding somewhere to set it up and use it
01:30 PM roycroft: i don't think there's room in my shop right now, and i don't want to use it in the house because it will make a mess
01:30 PM roycroft: so i might have to build an enclosure for it so i can use it in the house
01:30 PM Unterhausen: some extension I have installed is trying to keep me from shopping at harbor freight
01:31 PM Unterhausen: they send me personalized coupons and they get hidden so I can't use them
01:31 PM roycroft: did you install the "quality assurance" extension? :)
01:31 PM roycroft: or maybe it's the maga extension, which prevents you from buying anything made in china except for red hats and constitution/bible books
01:32 PM Unterhausen: I don't know, it's mildly amusing though
01:33 PM Unterhausen: There was a time I wouldn't go there at all without being pissed off, but with the way retail has devolved, sometimes they are just as good as any other place
01:33 PM xxcoder: had to pack it in a hurry
01:33 PM roycroft: there are actually some decent quality tools at harbor freight now
01:33 PM xxcoder: (not recent, but previous move)
01:34 PM roycroft: their hercules line is up there with the name brands for quality
01:34 PM roycroft: and bauer is not terrible
01:36 PM roycroft: and personally, i don't see a big difference between a company that pretends to be american, but owns factories in china where all its stuff is made, and companies that are open about importing all their stuff from china
01:36 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:36 PM roycroft: i used to have this argument with folks regarding everlast welders, which i own and like
01:37 PM xxcoder: interesting. I guess hf is finally upping the quality?
01:37 PM roycroft: they would say "those are cheap chinese wlders - lincoln and miller are american, and much better"
01:38 PM Unterhausen: the kids took over and improved things
01:38 PM roycroft: but then i would point out that lincoln and miller's inverter machines are made in china, and use chinese output transistors
01:38 PM Unterhausen: the father was dedicated to selling the cheapest crap possible
01:38 PM roycroft: while everlast is made in china, but uses matched german output transistors
01:38 PM roycroft: it's a natural progression
01:38 PM roycroft: selling the cheapest crap possible builds market share
01:39 PM roycroft: improving quality later on and slowly raising prices retains that market share
01:39 PM Unterhausen: he did it for far too long though
01:39 PM roycroft: and hf still sell the crap, as well as the better stuff
01:40 PM xxcoder: and in future, pricing at expensive rate for ever-lessening quality tools? (ie what happened to one company that shut down)
01:40 PM Unterhausen: I remember going there ~15 years ago and thinking that it would be best if everything was sent to the dump
01:41 PM Unterhausen: the biggest achievement that the kids have accomplished was making the stores so they don't stink of cheap rubber
01:41 PM roycroft: 15 years ago their nitrile gloves and chip brushes were fine
01:41 PM roycroft: now they have other things that are ok to buy
01:41 PM Unterhausen: at least now I don't feel scared when I see an auto technician shopping for wrenches there
01:42 PM roycroft: and 15 years ago, if you needed to abuse screwdriver that you knew you would destroy while abusing it, going to hf and buying one for $3 was fine
01:42 PM roycroft: and you can still get that crappy $3 screwdriver if you need it
01:42 PM Unterhausen: yeah, I bought a angle grinder to strip floors with. I think it was $10. It eventually caught on fire
01:43 PM xxcoder: $3? lol I had bought few screwdrivers at lowes for $1.50 each
01:43 PM roycroft: that's way better than abusing your $30 snap-on screwdriver and then having to wait for the snap-on truck to show up to replace it
01:43 PM xxcoder: each time they disappeared I bought couple. I have only 2 left now
01:44 PM Unterhausen: I have a wera screwdriver I need to replace. Used it as a chisel because they told me I could
01:45 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I have a beater klien screw driver
01:47 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Someone else wore it out
01:53 PM roycroft: i watched a youtube video the other day that was really entertaining
01:53 PM Unterhausen: $10, maybe I should have found a chisel to use instead
01:53 PM roycroft: the guy was reposting reviews of a klein screwdriver
01:53 PM roycroft: one person gave it one star, complaint that "it did not come with instructions"
01:54 PM Unterhausen: Wera screwdrivers have pictograms
01:54 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> LOL
01:55 PM Unterhausen: "how to ruin your screwdriver by using it as a chisel"
01:55 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I gotta love fb market place I was told it ran good
01:56 PM Unterhausen: I was searching for something about fb settings today and google autocompleted it as "getting facebook marketplace back"
01:57 PM Unterhausen: the way the fb algorithm works, they hide what you want to see so you'll doomscroll looking for it
01:59 PM roycroft: best political news of the year (and has nothing to do with america or our recent election): https://www.wonkette.com/p/new-zealand-maori-lawmakers-give
01:59 PM roycroft: the video is awesome
01:59 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Doom was fun to play with a buddy but it kept the phone line tied up
02:05 PM Unterhausen: I tried to get my kids into playing it with me, but they didn't like being shot
02:07 PM xxcoder: doom was pretty fun
02:07 PM xxcoder: quake was last one playable for me
02:25 PM Unterhausen: I used to spend too much time on them
02:25 PM Unterhausen: I also spent too much time playing baduk
03:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Me and my cousins would get together and play doom over 10b2
03:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> I won. We would play to 99
03:21 PM xxcoder: used 10b2 also. fun
03:21 PM xxcoder: finding where disconnect happened was fun also
03:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Novel light - networking in a box
03:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Best buy sold them for a short period
03:45 PM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> is anyone in here running 5axis?
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> @turboss and I am working on the backplotter functionality and would like to incorporate plotting correctly for 5 axis and was hoping someone with a 5 axis build might be able to assist in a few easy things and or share some working configs. TCP use is a bonus
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> https://imgur.com/a/V6sNoKx
04:03 PM d2inventory is now known as vbkobs
04:04 PM vbkobs is now known as d2inventory
04:09 PM Tom_L: lcvette, may be a challenge since it could be a cradle or a swivel head
04:28 PM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> yes, we see we will need triggers for the kind type being used
04:28 PM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> kins*
04:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> cool!
04:28 PM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> and configuration will have plotter triggers for the kins and axis combination type

05:53 PM jwash: Hi everyone. I just wired up a stepper to the x outputs of a parallel port, got everything turned on, when i try to jog it won't move. all i have connected is the x stepper driver and motor. Do i need to hook up endstops and home before i can jog?
05:55 PM jwash: https://imgur.com/qQq1Qzn.png
05:55 PM JT-Shop: you should be able to jog with power on, does the stepper turn freely?
05:56 PM JT-Shop: with power on?
05:56 PM jwash: no
05:56 PM jwash: I heard it engage when power was turned on
05:56 PM jwash: can't turn it by hand
05:56 PM JT-Shop: ok so the stepper drive is powered up
05:56 PM JT-Shop: check step and direction wiring
06:04 PM jwash: I'll review the wiring. Do you mean the pul- and dir- on the board? https://imgur.com/4pUl9Ve.png
06:08 PM JT-Shop: yup also use hal show to watch the stepgen to make sure it changes
06:12 PM Tom_L: so what's another useful sensible routine to write?
06:14 PM JT-Shop: you're on a roll now :)
06:14 PM Tom_L: naw, just caught up
06:15 PM Tom_L: if it doesn't make sense i probably won't do it
06:17 PM JT-Shop: that makes sense
06:18 PM JT-Shop: it's like programming if you don't have a need you can't learn it
06:18 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
06:18 PM * Tom_L does too
06:19 PM Unterhausen: well, lcd of my new monitor is broken, so that's nice
06:19 PM Tom_L: you're kinda rough on equipment
06:21 PM Unterhausen: I'm impressed how poorly the packaging was designed. There is 8" of dead space in the box behind the monitor
06:21 PM Unterhausen: and about 1" of space between the very breakable glass and the other side of the box
06:21 PM Unterhausen: who thought that was a good idea?
06:23 PM Tom_L: the mrs ordered a clock with a glass face and it was all fine until the deliver driver threw it on the porch as we stood inside and watched it shatter
06:27 PM Unterhausen: If I needed a hobby, I would take up cnc or something
06:29 PM Unterhausen: on the positive side, I cleaned my desk
