05:44 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> Morning
05:47 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> 43F/60F and raining
05:55 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> moin
06:06 AM lcnc-relay: <gtkplusplus@discord> Well, rip probe basic for me
06:06 AM lcnc-relay: This PC doesn't have support for glsl 1.5
06:07 AM lcnc-relay: <gtkplusplus@discord> Although maybe I can force it, I'll have to see. It's not promising though
06:38 AM JT-Cave: 45°F
06:43 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@discord> rain, fog, 5°C 🥺
06:44 AM Tom_L: 44F
08:43 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> 45F
08:44 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> moved the 42 down to the green polebuilding - it is already pretty full of steel - hope to grab a bunch from there too
08:48 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> started right up..
08:55 AM skunkworks: I need to get some side boards on the dump..
09:05 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Then I could haul more!!!
10:00 AM rdtsc-wk: gtkplusplus@discord --> FlexGUI has probing, see: https://www.gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/flexgui/probe.html totally modular, change it however you need
11:26 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> finally raining............not just a drizzle either

12:13 PM roycroft: so gasoline is below $3/gallon here now
12:13 PM roycroft: it's still stupid expensive in pdx though
12:13 PM roycroft: and the other day when i was up there i needed to fuel up, so i stopped at a station along the freeway
12:14 PM roycroft: 87 octane was $3.49/gallon, but there was another filling station right across the street, so i drove over there to see if the price was better
12:14 PM roycroft: 87 octane was $6.99/gallon there
12:14 PM xxcoder: wha
12:14 PM roycroft: how can there be such a huge price difference when the two fillinstations are literally across the street from each other?
12:14 PM roycroft: the first was a mobil station, the second arco
12:15 PM roycroft: so they were both name-brand stations
12:15 PM xxcoder: acro the crap gas for cheapo
12:15 PM xxcoder: sell for 7 usd a gal? what
12:15 PM roycroft: needless to say, i went back across the street and got just enough fuel to get home
12:16 PM roycroft: i've noticed that many filling stations no longer post their prices on a big sign visible from the highway
12:16 PM roycroft: as was the case with the arco station
12:17 PM roycroft: i've seen 20 cents/gallon price differences between stations right next to each other before, but never double the price
12:17 PM xxcoder: wonder if acro is depending on inattenativeness
12:17 PM roycroft: could be
12:17 PM roycroft: or people whose only credit card is an arco card
12:18 PM roycroft: that was down in woodburn, which for all practical purposes is part of pdx
12:18 PM xxcoder: I never went to acro for years, ever since my mecury sable didnt like their gas, it gets used 1/2 times faster and engine felt weaker. when my sis borrowed my mecury, told her no acro
12:19 PM xxcoder: car felt weak and gas went faster, asked sis if it was acro. she was surpised I knew
12:20 PM xxcoder: she forgot about no acro thing lol
12:21 PM xxcoder: mecury stable 1988 was pretty dang good car. little bit picky with gas though
12:22 PM xxcoder: some driver murdered it by making a left turn without looking.
12:30 PM rdtsc-wk: ouch. wonder if arco is >10% ethanol
12:31 PM roycroft: i just can't believe that price difference
12:31 PM roycroft: i mean, $6.99/gallon is high even for california prices
12:31 PM xxcoder: yeah thats just insane
12:32 PM roycroft: i just filled up in eugene at $2.97/gallon
12:32 PM xxcoder: I doubt I will ever go to acro. even if acro is dollar cheaper than neighbor gas station ill go to that one not acro
12:32 PM roycroft: #2 diesel is at $3.39 currently
12:32 PM * roycroft is hoping to not buy too much diesel fuel in the near future
12:33 PM rdtsc-wk: no acros near here... instead we have shell, which is probably the same thing
12:33 PM roycroft: i still have a few loads of stuff to haul from the old property, and several dump runs to make, but the end is in sight
12:33 PM rmu: from a european perspective, that is stupid cheap gas
12:33 PM xxcoder: awesome. your truck sure is earning its worth
12:33 PM roycroft: i go to the discount filling stations, and notice no difference in performance or fuel economy vs the name brands
12:33 PM rmu: stupidly
12:34 PM xxcoder: roy thats usually the case yeah. most vehicles can handle various quality of gas. that mecury was bit picky though
12:34 PM * roycroft wonders if everyone is going to order their stuff from china and elsewhere overseas before january 20
12:34 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> lol - I went to start dads ford as I had the charger on it for the last month or so. Totally dead. I open the hood and something chewed through one of the charger leads.
12:35 PM xxcoder: it was easy for me to tell if that gas was low quality, and acro was always crap
12:35 PM xxcoder: doh lol skunk
12:35 PM roycroft: probably a rat
12:36 PM xxcoder: or land rat with furry tail. (squarrel)
12:36 PM xxcoder: *tree
12:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> So - I need to get the charger back on it before the batteries decide to totally fail.
12:42 PM rdtsc-wk: In america, there is mass-transit of course but participation is low; nowhere near other countries. You pretty much need a car to live there - every home has at least one. Although alternatives like ride-sharing, uber, taxis are slowly becoming more popular.
12:48 PM roycroft: there is a bus to eugene twice/day from here
12:48 PM roycroft: other than that there is no mass transit in this town
12:48 PM roycroft: no cabs, no uber, none of that
12:49 PM roycroft: on the other hand, most folks can walk from anywhere in this town to anywhere else in this town
12:53 PM Tom_L: you could get rich.. just start up an uber service
12:54 PM xxcoder: if its good you could move around as much as flea on hot surface
12:54 PM roycroft: there are enough unemployed people here that if a uber service were viable someone would have done it already
12:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Oof.. One of the maitenence guys has an xp laptop that he uses to communicate with older machines (old software - some dos based)
01:00 PM roycroft: in those carloads of machines i donated yesterday was my old eeprom burner machine
01:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> he needed a new old software package installed. Well - it needed java.. Found an xp version and installed it. The installer didn't error but the software wouldn't lanch saying the java inviroment wasn't registered..
01:00 PM roycroft: it has windows 95 installed on it
01:01 PM roycroft: as well, in the donation boxes, were a bunch of floppy disks, and i noticed a set of ms-dos 6.0 disks
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Well - I rembered there was a microsoft version of java.. I found it on our server dated 03... Installed that and it worked..
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> msjavx86.exe
01:02 PM roycroft: when i started pulling that stuff out of the attic i intended to sort through everything and set aside things that might be interesting
01:02 PM roycroft: when i saw the magnitude of the pile i quickly changed course and focused on loading the car as fast and as full as i could
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> lol
01:03 PM roycroft: there was a pile of livingston portmasters - i thought i had gotten rid of all of those years ago, but there were 7 more in the attic
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> I have 2 p100 toshiba tft laptops that I would like to make one working...
01:03 PM roycroft: i have a tiny toshiba laptop whose battery is both dead and proprietary, but still works
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> I think it was the first laptop I bought for myself.
01:04 PM xxcoder: roy almost for sure battery has cells you could replace
01:04 PM roycroft: it has bsd/os installed on it right now, but if it has enough ram and disk to install windows 7 or 10 on it i'd like to use it to control one of my machines such as the vinyl cutter or book scanner
01:05 PM roycroft: yeah, that may be possible, xxcoder, but if i dedicated it to a machine as i said above, it can be plugged in all the time
01:05 PM xxcoder: true
01:05 PM roycroft: the book scanner would be an ideal project
01:05 PM roycroft: because i don't need a big screen for that
01:06 PM roycroft: nor would i need to interface with the laptop very much - i would just start up the software, and virtually all my work would be with the scanner itself, pushing buttons
01:06 PM xxcoder: makes sense yeah
01:09 PM roycroft: i found some industrial keyboard/monitor flex arm stands in the attic
01:09 PM roycroft: so it should be easy to mount displays/keyboards on the machines
01:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Dad has a stand up computer 'holder' that I was thinking of getting rid of - it is about 6ft tall and about 2ft by 2ft at the floor.
01:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> But - I think that might work as a decent roll around recording setup if I ever get more serious about youtube.

05:59 PM JT-Shop: I took the RF tie rods and tube out of the 82 and after a quick look ordered new ones
05:59 PM JT-Shop: they have been abused a lot
06:06 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:39 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> is hans on the irc? i wanna know more about his stm32 modbus thing
06:40 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> hansu5743@discord perhapse?
07:02 PM {HD}_ is now known as {HD}

08:39 PM roycroft: yay - i'm about to wrap up a project for the country fair that i've been working on for almost two years
08:39 PM roycroft: it will be good to get that off my plate
08:41 PM xxcoder: nice. one less iron in fire
08:41 PM roycroft: yes
08:41 PM roycroft: and it will be better for the fair to have the product
08:41 PM roycroft: finishing this project for me just means starting the next one :)
08:41 PM roycroft: but the next one is partially done already
08:43 PM xxcoder: lol the reward of job well done is more job
08:43 PM roycroft: yup
08:43 PM roycroft: now i have to decide whether to refinance my house now or wait until spring
08:44 PM roycroft: if i wait until march the bank will waive the closing costs
08:44 PM roycroft: but mortgage rates may jump way up after the new president is sworn in
08:44 PM roycroft: more than offsetting the closing cost savings
08:48 PM xxcoder: hard to predict what will happen
08:49 PM roycroft: not really
08:49 PM roycroft: the price of everything will go way up
08:49 PM roycroft: the debt will increase by $8 trillion
08:49 PM roycroft: it's all very predictable
08:50 PM roycroft: mortgage rates are tied more closely to long-term bond rates than to the prime interest rate
08:50 PM xxcoder: sucks
08:50 PM roycroft: and when the debt starts skyrocketing bond rates will also skyrocket
08:53 PM roycroft: fixed mortgage rates, that is
08:54 PM roycroft: adjustable mortgage rates are more closely tied to the prime rate
08:54 PM roycroft: but i'm not going to go from fixed rate to adjustable
08:54 PM roycroft: especially given who is going to control the government for the next four years
08:55 PM Tom_L: they've already dropped the fed
08:55 PM roycroft: yeah, and it should drop
08:55 PM roycroft: but bond rates will be going up as the debt increases next year
08:55 PM Tom_L: so waiting might be to your benefit
08:56 PM Tom_L: but that's not at topic for here
08:56 PM * roycroft bets that the 100% tariffs on chinese goods will have an exception for bibles and red hats :)
08:56 PM roycroft: the tariffs are a topic for here, as most of us rely on chinese parts for our cnc machines
08:56 PM Tom_L: hardly
08:57 PM roycroft: but i'll say nothing more for now :)
08:57 PM Tom_L: best
