12:06 AM roycroft: the first election results are in from dixville notch:
12:20 AM roycroft: harris 3, tfg 3
10:36 AM Tom_L: it looks like it's still there
10:36 AM Tom_L: not that it matters
10:40 AM JT-Shop: https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui/commit/d6ebb214ca355acf1f544973c5c0d2cb4683a523
10:40 AM Tom_L: it might help if i updated my local copy :)
10:40 AM JT-Shop: https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui/commit/d6ebb214ca355acf1f544973c5c0d2cb4683a523
10:45 AM Tom_L: it's odd when i don't specify a TOOL_EDITOR= line it comes up with just the installed columns but when i use TOOL_EDITOR = tooledit with no columns listed it shows them all
10:46 AM JT-Shop: default is to show all if not specified
10:47 AM Tom_L: i dunno what the default is if nothing is specified though
10:47 AM Tom_L: no tooledit line at all
10:47 AM JT-Shop: if no tooledit line then I show the configured axes and diam
10:48 AM Tom_L: ahh ok
10:48 AM Tom_L: i was about ready to test that in axis
10:48 AM JT-Shop: test and see what axis does
10:51 AM Tom_L: with no tooledit line OR TOOL_EDITOR = tooledit it shows them all
10:51 AM Tom_L: with columns listed it just shows those columns and any default ones
10:53 AM Tom_L: TOOL, POC and COMMENT are default
11:00 AM Tom_L: i don't find that in the docs though
11:03 AM JT-Shop: not a surprise
11:03 AM JT-Shop: lunch time
11:34 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, how's the control cabinet buid goin?
11:57 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:36 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/zYTNbtQjZXuUyctENVngNmnI/20241105_173232.jpg
01:36 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> spindle clutch!!!
01:36 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> * brake!!!
01:36 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> only 65Nm but its enough for my purposes :)
01:37 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> try not to edit in this channel, it bridges to IRC and when you edit it sends the whole message again
01:38 PM xxcoder: current bridge is a lot better on that, but yeah good idea anyway
01:39 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> just noticed that...
01:42 PM xxcoder: was testing edits, larger paragraph tend to repeat whole thing
01:44 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> was the apostrophe thing ever fixed?
01:45 PM xxcoder: easy test''''''''''''' "
01:45 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> hey, cool!
01:45 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcoder@discord> yup. it was bit annoying. this is test from other side ''''''''''''''''''' "
01:45 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcoder@discord> looks fine
01:46 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> 👍
01:46 PM xxcoder: dont think it was ever fixed, just new bridge thats better
01:47 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> well, that's a fix in my book 😉
01:47 PM xxcoder: ☑️
01:47 PM rdtsc-wk: Nice, sodakaustik. If you have a VFD/drive that supports it, injecting DC into the spindle will also stop it. Sadly, not all drives support it.
01:49 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> mine does 🙂 (support DC injection) i just can't afford the equipment to inject the DC, so i just use a brake resistor. noisy, but works great
01:51 PM rdtsc-wk: the drive should be able to inject a little bit of it's DC bus - but every drive is different, and pro-level spindle drives are in a whole other category of insanity
01:52 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> mine works for my needs, so far 🙂
01:54 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> only a little 4.5KW spindle
01:56 PM rdtsc-wk: you must be feeling better - active again :)
01:56 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> a little, new teeth don't fit anymore though. gum swelling went down a lot
01:57 PM rdtsc-wk: lets hope for no more major work - for any of us.
01:58 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> that is so true!
02:59 PM JT-Shop: what can I use to draw some simple electrical diagrams in linux?
03:00 PM xxcoder: theres that open source diagramming but forgot name
03:00 PM xxcoder: ah yes kicad
03:00 PM xxcoder: theres few other options like xcircuit or oregano
03:02 PM Rab: Dia includes various types of electronic symbols: http://dia-installer.de/shapes/index.html
03:03 PM JT-Shop: this is for 3 phase motor and control circuits
03:03 PM Rab: Probably looks a little nicer than KiCad output.
03:04 PM Rab: There are other, more specific diagramming and schematic drawing tools, but I don't remember them. There's a lot of in-browser stuff.
03:05 PM Tom_L: i used to have one that did flow diagrams.. not schematics but i forgot what it was
03:06 PM Rab: Yeah, I have seen some good flow chart programs.
03:06 PM Tom_L: https://opensource.com/article/18/8/flowchart-diagramming-linux
03:07 PM JT-Shop: I had one for acad that was perfect you had 2 rails for control circuts and drag and drop components
03:07 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> i have used KiCad and Fusion 360 for schematics
03:08 PM Tom_L: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/system-design-flow-chart_fig1_317554005
03:08 PM Tom_L: similar to that
03:08 PM JT-Shop: no
03:09 PM Tom_L: you want more of a wiring diagram?
03:09 PM xxcoder: oregano looks a lot like wiring diagram
03:09 PM xxcoder: how good it is dunno
03:10 PM Tom_L: https://www.edrawsoft.com/linuxdiagram/electrical-diagram-software-linux.html
03:10 PM xxcoder: that does look good
03:10 PM Tom_L: trial but non free
03:11 PM JT-Shop: oregano looks more like pcb wiring
03:11 PM Tom_L: yeah, kicad or eagle does that
03:11 PM Rab: Inkscape obviously makes very nice vector graphics. There are probably collections of SVG motor control symbols out there, or you could build up your own from primitives: http://reboots.g-cipher.net/mill/image/mill_motor_wiring.png
03:12 PM xxcoder: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1106647/looking-for-circuit-drawing-software lists bunch pof options with screenshots
03:12 PM xxcoder: like geda-gschem dunno on that
03:13 PM xxcoder: qucs shows electric current "olliscope" also which is interesting
03:29 PM rdtsc-wk: qucs is primarily an electronics simulator... confusingly, theres qucs-s GUI and qucsstudio GUI, two totally different projects
03:31 PM rdtsc-wk: I'd prefer to do such drawing in JT's way: acad. Barring that for home use, I'd suggest QCAD free version: https://www.qcad.org/en/ of course the pro version has more features but it isn't free.
03:31 PM rdtsc-wk: Then it's typical CAD workflow... line segments, tangent, move, etc.
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> rdtsc-wk: i intend to use it with the orient function for milling
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> +small pockets into parts that i get regularly
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> Oh man, im sorry for editing again, i am just so used to it. I will do my best to stop...
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> I intend to use it with a custom Gcode so that i can lock the spindle in any position and proceed with milling
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> Sometimes i wish HAL was a node based system. making things work would be sooo easy :)
03:39 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> 65Nm holding torque means that i wont be able to really push things, but for small diameter parts it should be okay.
03:40 PM rdtsc-wk: Nice. Made a jig earlier to hand-feed a 1.25in piece of acrylic into a mill-end to trim it to 0.99in... grossly under-estimated the force needed to push it through the cutter... a constant 15lbs for like 30 minutes, arms were sore lol
03:43 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> Can i send images here?
03:45 PM Tom_L: others do but i don't know how
03:46 PM Tom_L: i'm not on discord
03:46 PM rdtsc-wk: not sure here either... actually you already did share a photo a little over two hours ago: [14:28] <lcnc-relay> <sodakaustik@discord> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/zYTNbtQjZXuUyctENVngNmnI/20241105_173232.jpg
03:48 PM Tom_L: guess you figured it out
03:48 PM rdtsc-wk: however you did it, that's how it's done :)
03:48 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/BmUyLfWytnepPdoIbCfPubRb/20241030_175858.jpg

03:48 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> I just wanted to know if its a problem to send images
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> nope
03:49 PM Tom_L: fire in the hole!
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> sharing my lathe spindle there
03:49 PM rdtsc-wk: literally fire heheheh
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> Total home made lathe? Nice!
03:50 PM rdtsc-wk: lookin' good
03:50 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> the casting is from an old manual lathe from a local school, it was in very poor condition but you know what they say about old cast iron - its the best
03:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> How did you mill it flat for the linear rails?
03:51 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> I took it to an old factory where they still have a way grinder - 24meter waldrich coburg
03:51 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/ViupTEHzqwuOskomsSiunOnu/Screenshot_20241031_221623_Photos.jpg

03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> pics from the grinding process
03:52 PM Rab: Nice.
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> very nice!
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> nice to know people
03:53 PM Rab: Looks like the headstock is built up from plate, is it steel or aluminum?
03:53 PM Tom_L: that has the look of steel
03:54 PM Rab: That's what I thought from the little bit of patina, but it's pretty clean.
03:55 PM Tom_L: there was a russian guy that did one similar but all of it was scratch built
03:55 PM Tom_L: not sure if he was in this channel or another one
03:57 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> Steel plates, all of them i have milled and surface ground. 25mm + 20mm sides + 30mm base

03:59 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> I hope this doesnt appear spammy in IRC
03:59 PM Tom_L: just a bunch of links
04:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> what are you susing for axis drives?
04:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> using
04:01 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> Estun emg10 1kw servos with 20bit encoders. No linear encoders because i was naive
04:02 PM rdtsc-wk: fun "little" project :)
04:02 PM Rab: That's a cool project, what's the cross slide/bed travel?
04:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> lol - that is ok. Yes - it should be a pretty stout machine.
04:02 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> 25mm hiwin ballscrews with 10mm pitch, i ordered them with matched balls for preload instead of backlash
04:02 PM Rab: Nice Aciera mill!
04:02 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> Rab: just 165mm
04:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> If you can get the acceleration high - you should try some non circular turning 🙂
04:03 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> Thank you! I have two f5 acieras and they are my favorite machines in the world
04:03 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> I have great accelerations but the closed loop is only in the servos. I have no encoder output from them to linuxcnc (the drives dont provide it)
04:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9zhi8Mc1fE
04:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9zhi8Mc1fE
04:04 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> So i cant really do dynamically intensive tasks with a good degree of accuracy
04:05 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@discord> bed travel is 850mm, cross travel is 165
04:12 PM rdtsc-wk: do check out Andy's additions for lathes; the rotarySMP guy (is it Marc?) is always praising them.
04:14 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, it looked like that edrawsoft one has several templates you can download
04:14 PM Tom_L: https://www.edrawsoft.com/template-circuit-control.html
04:17 PM JT-Shop: I need to draw this https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS5JoRIdxla-2jherONjDJhgUVQZOo_5brISQ&s
04:17 PM * JT-Shop punches out for the day
04:18 PM Tom_L: from what i can see it would do that. i've never used it
04:18 PM Tom_L: 7 day free $99 basic package
04:19 PM JT-Shop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7E6cop0cLY
04:22 PM JT-Shop: looked good until i got to the buy it
04:23 PM Tom_L: how much?
04:23 PM Tom_L: they have alot of tutorials...
04:26 PM Tom_L: mmm
04:26 PM Tom_L: alot for a one off project
04:28 PM JT-Woodshop: I'd fire up my old xt pc but I doubt it would print to any modern printer
04:28 PM Tom_L: print to pdf
04:29 PM Tom_L: then send it from anywhere
04:30 PM Tom_L: iirc pdf creator or pdf architech allow that
04:30 PM Tom_L: i have those on 7
04:31 PM Tom_L: https://forums.pdfforge.org/t/available-pdf-creator-version-for-winxp/15122
04:32 PM Tom_L: the dl link is 404
04:32 PM Tom_L: https://www.win2pdf.com/windows-xp.html
04:32 PM Tom_L: never tried that one
04:43 PM Tom_L: it says pdf creator 2.5.3 is the last to work on xp. i can't find that but i do have 2.4.1 if you care to try it
04:44 PM Tom_L: not sure if it supported print to file or not back then
04:46 PM Tom_L: i have 3.5.1 installed on 7 and use it quite frequently to print pdfs
04:49 PM JT-Woodshop: didn't think of print to pdfd
04:50 PM Tom_L: adobe might but i generally don't use it
05:21 PM JT-Shop: anything in flex need my attention?
05:21 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Shop: how's it coming along?
05:40 PM JT-Cave: pretty much finished up
05:40 PM xxcoder: whew. dumped a lot of junk and stuff
05:41 PM xxcoder: once I get stuff to roy then I will have quite a bit more room
06:21 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, not that i'm aware of
06:27 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
07:16 PM jdh: 2d cad and free JIC electrical symbol blocks
07:17 PM Unterhaus__ is now known as Unterhausen
07:56 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
08:40 PM roycroft: it's going to be a long night, that might last about two weeks
08:40 PM xxcoder: yup
08:40 PM xxcoder: you got ideas on how we can commucate while im at south?
08:41 PM xxcoder: I probably could install irc client for phone or somethng but would like something better
08:41 PM roycroft: well, i do have a phone line that can do text to email
08:41 PM roycroft: so maybe that would work
08:41 PM xxcoder: ok
08:41 PM roycroft: i'm going to check it out tomorrow to make sure it works as i think it does
08:42 PM roycroft: i mainly use it for 2fa authentication that only does sms
08:42 PM roycroft: i know i can receive the sms messages as email
08:42 PM xxcoder: awesome. I probably will go on 7th, stay overnight at bro then meet you
08:42 PM roycroft: i just need to make sure i can send as well
08:42 PM roycroft: can you use email on your phone?
08:43 PM xxcoder: gmail likely but never did set it for phone. yeah can do that
08:43 PM roycroft: ok
08:43 PM roycroft: i'll work on the sms to email thing on my end
08:44 PM xxcoder: ok email seems set
08:44 PM roycroft: so there's at least a fallback if the preferred method does not work out
08:45 PM xxcoder: yeah
08:45 PM roycroft: the third option is that we just make all the arrangements ahead of time and i show up at the scheduled time and place :)
08:45 PM xxcoder: I found the plug that looks like one on ebay for book scanner
08:45 PM xxcoder: but its no quantee that its correct
08:45 PM roycroft: it's 9vdc 2a
08:46 PM xxcoder: a sec looking at it
08:46 PM roycroft: positive tip, i think
08:46 PM roycroft: but i don't know the diameter
08:46 PM roycroft: i may have one
08:46 PM roycroft: but my wall warts are in a box somewhere that i have not seen since i moved
08:47 PM xxcoder: its 12v, 2a, postibe inside if I read correctly
08:48 PM roycroft: that might work, but the rule of thumb is that you can feed +- 10% of the rated voltage
08:48 PM roycroft: so 10v would be fine, but 12v maybe not
08:48 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcoder@discord> looks like left one
08:48 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcoder@discord> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/PCUvUjcORwmoMTaWLOqGRRMJ/zsp7C.png
08:49 PM roycroft: the ones for sale on ebay all have the output voltage/amperage blurred out in the pictures, but i spent some time and found out that 9vdc@2a is correct for that device
08:49 PM xxcoder: yep just directly confirmed it
08:51 PM xxcoder: it dont say what polarity is but definitely 9v 2a
08:52 PM xxcoder: I think I finally remembered what its for, its for the rotating platform I was planning
08:52 PM roycroft: if you find the one that came with it that would be great, but if not, i can find one
08:53 PM xxcoder: yeah I plan to try blook around but its been in storage for so long. I found everything but plug. it even has the bonus usb hand clicker
08:53 PM xxcoder: it comes with both new and old style finger cots
08:53 PM roycroft: cool
08:53 PM roycroft: i hope it works out well
08:53 PM roycroft: it gets good reviews
08:53 PM xxcoder: honestly foot is better but yeah its an option
08:54 PM roycroft: the flattening software is supposed to work really well
08:54 PM roycroft: the higher end book scanners have a v-shaped bed and two cameras
08:54 PM roycroft: but they cost an order of magnitude more
08:54 PM xxcoder: yeah I was wondering about building one like that before I supported scanner
08:55 PM xxcoder: but ultimately I didnt need it so it was in storage
08:55 PM roycroft: i won't use it often, but it will come in handy
08:56 PM roycroft: i have a number of out of print books that are hard to come by and that quite a few folks would like to access
08:57 PM xxcoder: yeah hope you find it super useful!
08:57 PM roycroft: when you're old and have been buying books all your life that happens
09:00 PM xxcoder: :)
