#linuxcnc Calendar
04:50 AM Tom_L: mmm, lost power for a bit
05:45 AM JT-Cave: and the 3 5hp drives that were on back order shipped yesterday so I'll have all the components
07:27 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> JT-Cave: vfd?
07:27 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> pretty easy
07:28 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> easiest if you have the software input option, but can be done at the drive itself going through the parameters, just have all of the motor specs on hand as you will need to enter them all
07:28 AM JT-Cave: yup GS20 with ethernet card
07:28 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> i do this frequently
07:29 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> easy peasy, automation direct drives are great to work with
07:29 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> i probably have a dozen of them
07:29 AM JT-Cave: can you program them without main power?
07:30 AM JT-Cave: the drives for the control panel are 480v
07:30 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> mmmmm, never tried that
07:31 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> I don't know if the main power and logic power are separated externally
07:32 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> but you will typicaly need to run a auto tune which will require full power and the motor connected
07:32 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> depending how you are using them
07:33 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> will they e Sensorless vector Control, Vector feedback control, or Volts hertz?
07:40 AM JT-Cave: they are just mixing motors nothing special
07:45 AM JT-Cave: https://ibb.co/vwJVC6F
07:45 AM JT-Cave: I assume just use freq to slow down or speed up the mixers
07:50 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> JT, do the VFDs have a minimum main power limit? IOW, do they have to have 480v to program, or will they run on 220v?
07:52 AM JT-Cave: no clue
07:52 AM JT-Cave: https://ibb.co/rsz0y4H
07:52 AM JT-Cave: that's part of what I'm replacing
07:53 AM JT-Cave: https://ibb.co/mJT71dD
07:53 AM JT-Cave: that's the cleaner of the two cabinets lol
07:54 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> what are they mixing? dust? 😉
07:54 AM JT-Cave: https://ibb.co/W64yr0m
07:54 AM JT-Cave: ceramic
07:55 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@discord> ahh, that makes sense
07:55 AM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU4914GyGXI
08:12 AM * JT-Cave starts his chicken day
08:42 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i was thinking about your videos.. it would be handy if you listed a description on your page pointing to each one
09:02 AM JT-Cave: good idea
09:02 AM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
09:03 AM Tom_L: maybe some sort of build order etc
09:04 AM rdtsc: JT, if a drive has control power and main power inputs, it will power up from control power only
09:04 AM rdtsc: = separate
09:06 AM Tom_L: call them 'monkey see monkey do' :)
09:07 AM rdtsc: if you don't have 480, but do have a 480-to-240-or-120 control transformer, can run that in reverse to power a small 480 1ph load - do this often at work - should be no problem to power a 480v 5Hp drive, as long as a small motor is connected to it
09:09 AM rdtsc: 5Hp drive will only draw power needed for the motor
09:09 AM rdtsc: assuming of course that there are parameters for setting the motor voltage, current, etc.
09:11 AM rdtsc: can even just bump down the motor current and use the 5Hp motor, can get away with about 15% of the rated current
09:11 AM rdtsc: below that, it won't want to spin reliably
09:12 AM rdtsc: mornin' folks :)
09:12 AM Tom_L: connected to a load it might not either
09:12 AM rdtsc: nope, must be unloaded
09:12 AM Tom_L: ie the mixer
09:15 AM rdtsc: how ya feeling today Tom - on the upswing now?
09:16 AM Tom_L: depends on who's asking.. for the baby shower, i'm dying, the rest of the world i feel pretty good
09:17 AM Tom_L: the one monday bothers me more than the one yesterday
09:18 AM rdtsc: ha! rough that you had two so close together... you gonna be good for awhile now? :)
09:18 AM bjorkintosh: I always buy socks.
09:18 AM bjorkintosh: it leads to complete silence and confusion during such events.
09:18 AM bjorkintosh: and I explain "they'll wear them out"
09:19 AM Tom_L: rdtsc, that part doesn't bother me much and i have one more but i'm undecided which way to go with it
09:22 AM * rdtsc wishes nanites were real, and could be programmed to rebuild teeth.
09:23 AM Tom_L: they did cnc these on the spot
09:23 AM rdtsc: Another good one bjorkintosh may be a set of small to large nail clippers. Because multiple pieces will assuredly come up missing over the years.
09:25 AM bjorkintosh: ah yes.
09:27 AM bjorkintosh: rdtsc: there's work in progress. https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20240503/p2a/00m/0sc/012000c
09:27 AM bjorkintosh: World's 1st 'tooth regrowth medicine' to be tested in Japan from Sept. 2024
09:28 AM bjorkintosh: also, if you have good teeth, it doesn't matter but I spend approximately 20 dollars on a tube of tooth paste.
09:28 AM bjorkintosh: it's made a complete difference in sensitivity.
09:28 AM bjorkintosh: https://theodent.com/
09:29 AM bjorkintosh: the diamond mint is $100.00 a tube :-D
09:29 AM bjorkintosh: but I don't use that one. too pricey.
09:37 AM Tom_L: uncontrollable fangs
09:37 AM Tom_L: how fitting for halloween
09:40 AM rdtsc: The missus used to work in dental... she'd swear fluoride is safe, but I'm not so convinced. Elemental chlorine and fluorine are the two worst "free radicals" possible; then again we eat lots of salt and that has chlorine... who knows.
09:53 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> rdtsc: what about vitamin D in the milk ? another conspiracy ?
10:33 AM roycroft: eugene does not fluoridate its drinking water
10:38 AM Tom_L: don't most use bottled water now anyway?
10:45 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> not me. water here comes mainly from the Sierra's.... some from the rivers
10:46 AM Tom_L: Wichita has won the honor of best drinking water since 2009
10:46 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> you're fortunate
10:47 AM Tom_L: non fluoride
10:47 AM Tom_L: yeah, i've tasted some pretty crappy water
10:48 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> i think ours here gets fluoride. but not totally sure. doesn't matter to me.
10:48 AM Tom_L: even so, years ago my granparents used to bring their own jugs of water when visiting
10:50 AM * rdtsc is hacking away at an updated ui... coffee time
10:50 AM Tom_L: pic or it never happened
10:56 AM bjorkintosh: well coffee just requires a cup :-D
10:58 AM bjorkintosh: oh. and coffee
10:58 AM bjorkintosh: let me see.
11:11 AM * roycroft just made a cappuccino
11:12 AM roycroft: i'm running late today
11:12 AM roycroft: i'm still recovering from my covid vaccine, which hit me harder than it has in the past so i slept in a little today
11:20 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: covid vac, just hurts the arm for a couple days.
11:21 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> but well worth it
11:40 AM roycroft: usually that's the case with me, but this time it's fatigued me as well
11:41 AM roycroft: i got moderna this time for the first time - it's always been pfeizer before
11:41 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> i'm strictly moderna
11:41 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> 7 times now
11:41 AM JT-Shop_: nap time
11:41 AM roycroft: i don't know if it's the difference in the salts between the two, or the different mrna this time that is causing a stronger reaction
11:41 AM bjorkintosh: how modern.
11:42 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:42 AM * roycroft should get going
11:43 AM roycroft: i have one piece of wood to cut, then a glue-up for the dust collector fixture, and then i have to head down to the old property to haul one of the last loads of stuff up here
11:43 AM roycroft: and oh, i have a meeting as soon as i get to town
11:43 AM roycroft: busy day, but that's how my weekends have been all year
11:43 AM Tom_L: roycroft, your neighbor kids haven't tried to vandalize it have they?
11:43 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> finally in the 60's here. gotta go for my ride
11:44 AM roycroft: i've had some stuff stolen
11:44 AM rdtsc: get one of those ring cameras
11:44 AM roycroft: i'm at the point that anything i still really want is too big and heavy to move easily
11:45 AM roycroft: probably 80% of what is left is either going to be donated or taken to recycling/landfill
11:45 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> no ring junk. it's owned by amazon.
11:45 AM rdtsc: (or your favorite flavor of small camera)
11:45 AM Tom_L: another conspiracy?
11:45 AM rdtsc: hey - a trail cam might work well
11:46 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> no Nest stuff either. owned by google
11:47 AM roycroft: we're working on a monitoring project at my job
11:47 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> all them frackers want to watch and listen. and that's real
11:47 AM rdtsc: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=trail+cam
11:47 AM roycroft: using rpis running zabbix proxy to talk to a zabbix server
11:47 AM roycroft: we're considering rolling an alarm system into the product
11:48 AM roycroft: i'll be researching alarm devices soon
11:48 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> same with all those cruise around vacuum cleaner things.
11:48 AM Tom_L: no, they just cuss at ya
11:48 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> rdtsc: I'm just looking for one that doesn't have to be internet connected.
11:49 AM rdtsc: 2035: Refrigerator cusses at us
11:49 AM Tom_L: or locks you out
11:49 AM rdtsc: "Due to your size, I've decided you must go on a diet." lol
11:50 AM roycroft: that's where our product will be, roguish - the rpi will be internet-connected, but it will be push only
11:50 AM roycroft: so it will only talk to the zabbix server
11:50 AM roycroft: which we will normally host, but our customers can host their own server if they wish
11:51 AM roycroft: the immediate application is a municipality for whom we provide services - they want finer granularity when monitoring their water treatment and waste water treatment plants
11:52 AM roycroft: right now all we can monitor is whether their network connection is up or not
11:52 AM roycroft: if it's not then someone's pager goes off and the city has to pay 2 hours overtime + mileage for a truck roll to check the plant
11:52 AM roycroft: our new product will be able to monitor the equipment itself, and will have oob notifications (a cellular modem) if the network is down
11:53 AM roycroft: if it's just a network issue they save the dispatch, but if the equipment is down they need to be there immediately
11:56 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: i'm very careful with what in my home connects out. i use the router to block a lot of stuff, like printers, cams, NAS, etc....
11:56 AM bjorkintosh: ☕
11:57 AM bjorkintosh: there. proof. coffee.
12:03 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ok, off mor my slow and easy 18 miles ride...... bbl
12:06 PM roycroft: me too
12:06 PM roycroft: i replaced the spectrum-provided router/wifi access point with a cisco asa firewall and my own ap
12:07 PM roycroft: and i carefully control what traffic can egress my internal network
12:07 PM roycroft: btw, there is a very simple way to block most of that stuff
12:08 PM roycroft: every network has a gateway address
12:08 PM roycroft: for the devices you do not want to be able to access the internet, provision them with the correct netmask, but with a bogus gateway address
12:08 PM roycroft: they will be able to talk to the local network, but not beyond
12:09 PM bjorkintosh: aha
12:10 PM * bjorkintosh takes note.
12:11 PM roycroft: since i'm old fashioned, and back before windows networking the gateway was usually the highest address in the network, i use the low address for the bogus gateway
12:12 PM roycroft: so on 192.168.0.0/24, 192.168.0.254 is the gateway, and 192.168.0.1 is the bogus gateway
12:12 PM roycroft: reverse those numbers for the windows convention of using the low number as the gateway
12:12 PM roycroft: it's absolutely fool-proof if you do that
12:13 PM roycroft: and the added advantage is that if you ever do need to connect a device to the internet, for doing a firmware upgrade for example, all you have to do is change the gateway to the real one, do the upgrade, then change it back
12:13 PM roycroft: no messing with firewall/packet filter rules
12:14 PM * bjorkintosh scribbles furiously.
12:15 PM bjorkintosh: I like books. roycroft can you recommend a book on such networking hacks and so on?
12:15 PM roycroft: i can't
12:16 PM roycroft: i haven't read a networking book in so long, most of what i've ever used is out of print
12:16 PM roycroft: and apparently this particular hack is not one that would be published in a book
12:16 PM roycroft: when i tell my network-administrator friends about it, they invariably look at me in disbelief and say "but you can't do that - it won't work"
12:17 PM roycroft: and respond "exactly - it won't work, and the whole point is to make sure it won't work"
12:17 PM roycroft: then they understand, but i know in their gut they still think it's wrong
12:17 PM roycroft: that the network has to be configured correctly, and restricting traffic flow is a function of a firewall or packet filter
12:17 PM roycroft: not network configuration
12:18 PM roycroft: however, it does work and it works very well
12:18 PM rdtsc: sometimes I exploit this at work - like when connecting a customer's Windows XP HMI to the work LAN - change it's gateway to something bogus, so it can't turn into a zombie under my watch :)
12:22 PM rdtsc: 2024 and there are still XP machines running out there... crazy
12:23 PM bjorkintosh: crazy? why's that?
12:23 PM Tom_L: NT
12:23 PM bjorkintosh: don't break it if it's not broken.
12:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> we have 1 windows 95 machine still
12:23 PM bjorkintosh: we use G-Code and it's from '72 thereabouts.
12:23 PM rdtsc: yeah but they are sitting ducks in terms of security
12:24 PM * bjorkintosh can't seem to find a single document tracing the original definition of G-Code.
12:24 PM bjorkintosh: I've tried.
12:24 PM bjorkintosh: rdtsc: shield them.
12:24 PM rdtsc: some g-code history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-code
12:25 PM rdtsc: I wrongly thought it was Gerber-code
12:25 PM bjorkintosh: me too.
12:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@discord> nist set the standard at some point..
12:28 PM rdtsc: Maybe Seb or Andy would know more of the lore
12:29 PM bjorkintosh: that would be nice. it seems the wiki page has been updated since I last saw it.
12:34 PM bjorkintosh: <roycroft> i can't <-- perhaps a collection of tips.
12:34 PM bjorkintosh: roycroft's netitude.
12:34 PM * rdtsc senses a book opportunity for roycroft :)
12:36 PM bjorkintosh: or a pamphlet!
12:43 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> https://tsapps.nist.gov/publication/get_pdf.cfm?pub_id=823374
12:44 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/Legacy/IR/nistir5416.pdf
12:45 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> "The most recent prior version of RS274 is RS274-D, which was
12:45 PM lcnc-relay: completed in 1979. It is described in the document “ElA Standard EIA-274-D” by the Electronic
12:45 PM lcnc-relay: Industries Association [EIA]."
12:48 PM rdtsc: interesting... NGC is an acronym for Next Generation Control(ler) - learn something new every day
12:48 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> the first version of G-Code (referred to as RS-274) was invented, in 1958.
12:48 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> https://gcodetutor.com/gcode-tutorial/history-of-gcode.html
12:48 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> https://gcodetutor.com/gcode-tutorial/history-of-gcode.html
12:49 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> thats when captn used to write his programs on toilet paper and fed into a machine
12:51 PM bjorkintosh: so what baffles me is that MIT (where CNC was developed) used Apt
12:51 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> look at Mr. Fancypants with his toiler paper
12:51 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> we only had a bucket and a rock
12:51 PM bjorkintosh: I'm still not sure where RS-274 came from.
12:52 PM bjorkintosh: Apt is from the '50s
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> rs is something to do with electrical standards
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> It was developed by the EIA in the early 1960s, and finally standardised by ISO in February 1980 as RS274D / ISO 6983.
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> research EIA docs
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> and 274 is the number
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> like iso 9000
12:53 PM xxcoder: maybe its just 274th version
12:53 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> well rs 422
12:53 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> and rs 485 is the serial standard
12:53 PM xxcoder: well that sounds very likely. I was being bit silly :)
12:53 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> i prefer iso 6983
12:53 PM bjorkintosh: ah I see.
12:54 PM bjorkintosh: anything with ISO means $$$$.$$
12:54 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> lmao yeah
12:54 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> ans ts
12:54 PM bjorkintosh: can't believe they charge so much for that crap.
12:54 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GOVPUB-C13-2ef4aaa5a150eedcb85a1e6985e90bfa/pdf/GOVPUB-C13-2ef4aaa5a150eedcb85a1e6985e90bfa.pdf
12:54 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> guy on 4chan told me a life hack for that
12:54 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> said his business was iso9000 compliantr
12:55 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> so he could get on xometery
12:55 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> not certified, but compliant
12:56 PM bjorkintosh: xometery?
12:56 PM bjorkintosh: is that a word or a variable in COBOL?
12:56 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> lol, its the cnc job bidding marketplace
12:56 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> https://www.xometry.com/
12:56 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> https://www.xometry.com/
12:57 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> like fivr or sopmething
12:57 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> but for cnc
12:58 PM bjorkintosh: oh. 'compliant'.
12:58 PM bjorkintosh: as opposed to 'certified'.
12:58 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> Between 1942 and 1945 the first programming language was invented by a German engineer called Konrad Zuse and was named Plankalkül.
12:58 PM bjorkintosh: how fucking clever.
12:58 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> another invention by the Nazi's
12:58 PM bjorkintosh: yeah but PlanKalkul was not known outside of germany.
12:58 PM bjorkintosh: and he was a civil/mechanical engineer.
01:00 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> are there any examples of A or B codes?
01:00 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> yeah exactly, 'compliant" so they let him on join the pool of bidders, but he had to fight with them all the time
01:00 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> as in a axis or a code as in gcode
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> so alaphabet code
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> A B C D E F and then the winner G-code
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> geometry code
01:01 PM rdtsc: "gee it works" code
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> we arent at a yet,
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> it goes accending
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> we will get alpha code when we are out of beta
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> https://gcodetutor.com/gcode-tutorial/img/timeline-gcode.jpg
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/EJQAANTiISqAmSwSwgaBpMvH/https%3A//gcodetutor.com/gcode-tutorial/img/timeline-gcode.jpg
01:02 PM rdtsc: I did 7.5h of Z-code last night
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> ghahah regional acssembly language
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> i prefer municipal gathering code
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> I wish SNOBOL would have been as popular as COBOL
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> autocode, flomatic
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> speakeasy, MUMPS
01:04 PM bjorkintosh: Composite summary sheet on Relational Data Management Approach
01:04 PM bjorkintosh: 4. Scope : It is still being researched within academia.
01:04 PM bjorkintosh: funny
01:04 PM bjorkintosh: it's from the document you posted.
01:04 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> so whats everyones hot take on STEPNC
01:04 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> as the next buig thing
01:08 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> how can it be exploited by capitalist pigs?
01:09 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> if not it probably won't happen
01:10 PM xxcoder: I hear you can make decent living if you learn cobol
01:10 PM rdtsc: banks still use it
01:10 PM xxcoder: jobs is few but vital
01:10 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> seeme less important now stepnc, now that we have fancy cams and poast processors
01:11 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/YnQliEiyBxjgZBbBbVvzaegG/rpi5.png
01:11 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> what do you think these hooks are on the underside of rpi5?
01:14 PM xxcoder: tp72 nd tp73?
01:19 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> yeah, they are these solid loops
01:28 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@discord> test points for probes to hook onto
01:28 PM bjorkintosh: stepnc?
01:29 PM bjorkintosh: It is still being researched within academia.

01:32 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@discord> its just they are so big , and on the bottom side,
