#linuxcnc Calendar
07:23 AM bjorkintosh: only.
07:36 AM rdtsc-wk: On the up-side, it is very, very-well-vetted.
07:53 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> o/ morning
08:07 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> JT-Cave: o/
08:07 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> tell me more of the hal pin spin box
08:07 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> sounds like the better method maybe
08:15 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> i think the forum needs some new security parameters, it appears that spammers have inundated it!
08:22 AM Deejay: hi
08:23 AM bjorkintosh: moin
09:05 AM JT-Cave: morning levette
09:09 AM JT-Cave: first you have to create a hal component, I'm sure you have one https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui/blob/0.9.9/flexgui/src/flexgui#L67
09:11 AM JT-Cave: this is where I create the hal pins and connect to the spinbox https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui/blob/master/flexgui/src/libflexgui/startup.py#L1103
09:12 AM JT-Cave: when the value of the spinbox changes I update hal here https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui/blob/master/flexgui/src/libflexgui/utilities.py#L147
09:30 AM * rdtsc-wk is beginning to think CapXon sells high-quality caps to mainland HK, and junk for export. Just ran across a BK Precision power supply which is actually a Manson SPS-9600, which uses all CapXon caps and all seem fine.
12:34 PM * Tom_L watches the truck icon on google maps as it nears
12:34 PM Tom_L: haven't seen one of those in a while
12:35 PM Tom_L: 9 stops away...
12:40 PM * roycroft has never trusted the truck icon, as it has always let him down
12:41 PM roycroft: but i can't even get them any more - one has to have a ups account to have access to that information
12:41 PM roycroft: and i cancelled my ups account after they charged me for a parcel shipment from kentucky to tennessee that i had no idea about, nor had i ever heard of either the shipper or the recipient
12:42 PM roycroft: ups told me that if someone uses my ups account number then i have to pay for it, so i cancelled my ups account
01:08 PM rdtsc-wk: what the?
01:09 PM bjorkintosh: they were trying to get him to cancel his UPS account for laughs.
01:11 PM roycroft: when i dealt with them they could not conceive of someone using a ups account fraudulently
01:12 PM roycroft: or else this was by design, and they did not care because they saw it as a potential additional revenue stream
01:13 PM roycroft: but they at least feigned suprise and puzzlement that this was possible and that someone would do it
01:13 PM roycroft: they told me that if someone used my ups account i must have authorized it, otherwise they would not have my shipper number
01:17 PM xxcoder: yeah numbers, those can be made up
01:29 PM rdtsc-wk: or hacked
01:32 PM xxcoder: yep
01:36 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, I've been working on the enable/disable for home controls so check that they work for you
01:38 PM Tom_L: ok
01:39 PM Tom_L: i've been having pc issues again so it might be a bit
01:39 PM Tom_L: axis homing?
01:39 PM JT-Shop: yup just the enable/disable part for home and unhome buttons
01:43 PM Tom_L: what was wrong with it before?
01:46 PM Tom_L: this probe is tiny
01:48 PM JT-Shop: you got your probe?
01:48 PM bjorkintosh: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XJIgmKSv7HU
01:48 PM bjorkintosh: huh. my interrupted cuts were never this smooth.
01:48 PM JT-Shop: when running with a sim sometimes the correct home controls were not enabled or disabled as they should have been
01:49 PM Tom_L: yup
02:10 PM JT-Shop: which probe did you get
02:19 PM lcnc-relay: <vibram> Do you know how to send a key press "enter" with the python serial interface? I can send text but I don't know how to simulate key such as enter/return or tab etc
02:22 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, just some cheap chinese one off amazon
02:23 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/V5-Waterproof-Anti-roll-Compatible-Finder-NO/dp/B0BDSDSJF6/ref=sr_1_2
02:24 PM Tom_L: i just got to test
02:25 PM roycroft: you probably weren't using a "laser" as part of your process, bjorkintosh
02:26 PM roycroft: everyone knows that a "laser" makes anything better
02:26 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Tom_L: just got touch-probe2 to actually come alive on my mill
02:54 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Tom_L: hey, Seb got buildbot2 going..... yeah baby
03:16 PM rdtsc-wk: Everyone's got the burners on high - even Linus Torvalds lol
03:38 PM roycroft: i have very mixed breakfast news today
03:38 PM roycroft: the good news is that i found my long-missing waffle iron (it's been missing for years), and i was able to make waffles for breakfast
03:38 PM roycroft: the bad news, and it's really bad, is that the steam wand knob for my espresso machine broke this morning (after making my cappuccino, thank goodness)
03:38 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: get some real, pure maple syrup
03:39 PM roycroft: a replacement is on the way, but that will take several days
03:39 PM roycroft: i have some real, pure maple syrup
03:39 PM roycroft: that stuff is almost worth its weight in gold these days
03:39 PM roycroft: but it's really tasty
03:41 PM * roycroft was never a fan of mrs. butterworth's or aunt jemimah's
03:42 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> yeah, those are junk
03:42 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> waffles are good. non-skid pancakes....
03:43 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/probe_test.mp4
03:44 PM xxcoder: interesting
03:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> roguish: i used to boil down my own maple syrup... thats some GOOD eating 🙂
03:45 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> yeah, you're up there where it is
03:46 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Tom_L: hey, in your probe2 gui, could you define/explain what all the stuff on the right side is?
03:46 PM Tom_L: stuff
03:46 PM Tom_L: :)
03:46 PM Tom_L: it's in a readme
03:46 PM Tom_L: look in the subdirectory
03:46 PM Tom_L: i can't get to my linux box atm
03:46 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/CIMkzkbSvTQGFRoyUOManizE/image.png
03:47 PM Tom_L: units 1 inch 0 mm
03:47 PM roycroft: my speculation is that the waffle iron was buried somewhere, and one of my moving helpers packed it in a box
03:47 PM Tom_L: search feed, find the brick wall, probe feed, see where the brick wall is
03:48 PM roycroft: i have not seen it in years, as i said, and i would have remembered running across it when packing thing to move
03:48 PM roycroft: i certainly noticed it when i unpacked the box i unpacked this morning
03:48 PM Tom_L: search dist, search .5" and give up if it doesn't trip the probe
03:48 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Tom_L: I harange morley too over documentation
03:48 PM Tom_L: retract dist is the backoff for the 2nd probe
03:49 PM Tom_L: final dist is after it's done it backs off
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> anyway, I actually got it running on the mill.
03:49 PM Tom_L: x y coords are for the tool probe location
03:49 PM Tom_L: z start is some small dist from ^ z world home
03:50 PM Tom_L: z max probe probe for 2" looking for the tool sensor
03:50 PM Tom_L: hole max rad is for the hole id probe
03:50 PM Tom_L: tip diam is in mm and is obvious
03:51 PM Tom_L: if the retract dist is too small, it screws with the math so i set a min
03:51 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> tip diam goes to 2 decimals. not enough
03:51 PM Tom_L: i can change that
03:51 PM Tom_L: you can change that
03:51 PM Tom_L: in designer
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> my probe now as a 1/8" ball tip
03:52 PM Tom_L: figures :)
03:52 PM Tom_L: you'll have to do the conversion for now
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> decimal place was another thing I pinged Morley on. had change most to 3 place.
03:53 PM Tom_L: ok
03:53 PM Tom_L: this is an example to build from... don't just use it, change it to suit and then use it
03:54 PM Tom_L: but i'm wide open for suggestions since i hardly ever probe
03:54 PM Tom_L: i mostly made those up so i could test the probe routines
03:54 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I know it's still in the works..... that's why I loaded it
03:55 PM Tom_L: test it with your had on the red button
03:55 PM Tom_L: program pause works too for that matter
03:55 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> totally
03:55 PM Tom_L: and i wouldn't have a hard stop until you know what they do. i plan to hold a block with my finger so if need be it can move
03:56 PM rdtsc-wk: probe a block of foam :)
03:56 PM Tom_L: removable block
03:57 PM Tom_L: i doubt a small probe tip would even stand up against foam that well
03:57 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> where is your adventure? just probe a hard object... 😉
03:57 PM Tom_L: and that
03:58 PM rdtsc-wk: https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-4s9liwcv/images/stencil/1920w/products/101652/282974/blake__08408.1442598362.JPG?c=2
03:58 PM Tom_L: is why i still have a working probe
03:58 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> so do i
03:58 PM Tom_L: rdtsc-wk, trust me i know what they look like
03:58 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> my third one... 🤣
03:59 PM rdtsc-wk: can't wait til I get to bend my first one
03:59 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> makes you extra cautious about your code
03:59 PM Tom_L: also why i keep this link: https://www.carbideprobes.com/
04:00 PM Tom_L: 100°F
04:00 PM Tom_L: also why i'm done in the shop for today
04:01 PM JT-Shop: 87
04:01 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> 83F
04:02 PM Tom_L: yesterday when i wired the cabinet i added a 10k pulldown knowing the probe was 5v... well that was a mistake
04:02 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> nice 79 now here
04:02 PM Tom_L: it doesn't need one
04:02 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> going way up again next week
04:02 PM rdtsc-wk: need some rain here... backyard is starting to look like a desert
04:03 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> leaves are falling in good shape here
04:05 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/eCHJVzogyxtDAndGGSQJpBvF/Screenshot_2024-09-19_at_16-58-11_motionEye_Home_Assistant.png
04:07 PM rdtsc-wk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0jGWIXSTr8 oops
04:08 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> i have one that looks in similar condition 😉
04:08 PM rdtsc-wk: If "measure twice, cut once" is a thing, then "simulate twice, probe once" should likely also be a thing, lol
04:08 PM roycroft: we're getting a little rain here and there
04:09 PM roycroft: not enough, but enough to keep things from dying completely, and it's also starting to help with the wildires a bit
04:09 PM roycroft: the fires won't be out until late november, but they're not growing as fast now
04:10 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, haha fix last fixme :)
04:10 PM JT-Shop: :)
04:10 PM roycroft: and our air quality has improved dramatically
04:12 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, what should i be looking for on the home buttons?
04:13 PM Tom_L: they seem to be doing what they're supposed to
04:13 PM JT-Shop: the home buttons should toggle between home and unhome and if any are unhomed all the rest of the controls that require all homed should be disabled
04:14 PM JT-Shop: home all and unhome all should enable disable as expected
04:15 PM JT-Shop: and as soon as all are homed those controls that require all homed should be enabled
04:27 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/hal_pin_error.png
04:28 PM JT-Shop: looks like an o vs a 0
04:28 PM JT-Shop: but I might be wrong
04:28 PM Tom_L: case sensitive
04:28 PM Tom_L: not my day..
04:28 PM Tom_L: hal_dir
04:29 PM Tom_L: you might note that in the docs
04:29 PM JT-Shop: note what?
04:29 PM Tom_L: HAL_DIR error, hal_dir works
04:30 PM JT-Shop: I think I cast that to upper...
04:30 PM Tom_L: i normally don't use caps there, just a boo boo
04:30 PM JT-Shop: oh I see the prop name is all caps
04:30 PM JT-Shop: I was focusing on the values lol
04:30 PM Tom_L: heh
04:31 PM Tom_L: i haven't tried hal_dir hal_out either
04:31 PM Tom_L: lower on both
04:32 PM JT-Shop: yup the names must be lower
04:32 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:34 PM Tom_dev: open rpi_mill_3 and all the program buttons are enabled doing nothing yet
04:35 PM Tom_dev: enabling estop disables the program buttons
04:35 PM Tom_dev: on a fresh startup doing nothing
04:35 PM Tom_L: you broke it
04:37 PM Tom_L: stop breaking it!!!
04:38 PM JT-Shop: ok...
04:38 PM Tom_dev: home all is also enabled doing nothing with estop or power
04:39 PM JT-Shop: ok, I know what that is
04:39 PM Tom_dev: home xyz are greyed out
04:39 PM Tom_dev: as are unhome everything
04:39 PM Tom_dev: just home all
04:45 PM Tom_dev: clear error is broke... did you rename that button?
04:48 PM Tom_L: looks like you renamed it
04:48 PM JT-Shop: startup status should be fixed
04:48 PM JT-Shop: hmm don't remember
04:49 PM JT-Shop: clear_errors_pb
04:49 PM Tom_dev: yup that fixed that
04:49 PM Tom_dev: was clear error history or some such
04:50 PM JT-Shop: hmm oh yeah...
04:50 PM JT-Shop: doc is prob wrong
04:50 PM * Tom_L makes a list to edit the examples
04:50 PM Tom_L: the button docs on the html is right
04:51 PM * JT-Shop goes out to put a wheel on the 82
04:51 PM Tom_L: you probably did that when you made the info display
04:51 PM JT-Shop: that sounds plausible
04:51 PM Tom_L: copy is probably wrong too..
04:52 PM JT-Shop: Clear Error History
04:52 PM JT-Shop:
04:52 PM JT-Shop: clear_errors_pb
04:52 PM JT-Shop: Copy Error History
04:52 PM JT-Shop:
04:52 PM JT-Shop: copy_errors_pb
04:52 PM JT-Shop: Clear Information History
04:52 PM JT-Shop:
04:52 PM JT-Shop: clear_info_pb
04:52 PM Tom_dev: i have that open
04:53 PM Tom_dev: no copy_info_pb?
04:53 PM JT-Shop: do we need one?
04:53 PM Tom_dev: i don't
04:57 PM Tom_dev: i think the program buttons are ok now
04:58 PM Tom_dev: if power is toggled off, does it need to be rehomed?
04:59 PM Tom_dev: the state of those doesn't change with a power toggle
04:59 PM Tom_dev: same with estop and power together
04:59 PM Tom_dev: no state change on homing
05:08 PM JT-Shop: I think that is an ini option, for steppers I'd say yes for servos with encoders no
05:10 PM JT-Shop: VOLATILE_HOME = 0 - When enabled (set to 1) this joint will be unhomed if the Machine Power is off or if E-Stop is on. This is useful if your machine has home switches and does not have position feedback such as a step and direction driven machine.
05:10 PM JT-Shop: we need to test that
05:26 PM bjorkintosh: right you are, roycroft. I didn't have a laser.
05:27 PM Tom_L: wasn't aware of that ini setting
05:38 PM JT-Shop: it should toggle the home buttons enabled and the unhome disabled
05:41 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Good storm passing through here
05:42 PM Tom_L: not so good heatwave passin thru here
05:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> unplugged the tower lol
05:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> starlink went down for a few seconds
05:43 PM JT-Shop: what do you use the tower for?
05:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> tv antenna.. and a camera
05:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Mainly recording antique road show and the original ncis.. (mom loves that show)
05:44 PM xxcoder: telsa weapon ;)
05:44 PM JT-Shop: cool
05:46 PM JT-Shop: got the wheels back on the 82 but I need to take the rear ones off for cleaning and to put the dust cap on the bleed screws
05:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I need to figure out how I can isolate the power to the tower
05:47 PM JT-Shop: isolation transformer?
05:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Thought about it - is it enough? for a lightning strike?
05:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I don't know
05:48 PM JT-Shop: oh no, you need a good ground rod at the tower
05:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> the tower is grounded in 4 places - but lighting is lighting..
05:48 PM JT-Shop: we used to blow up electronics a lot until I put a ground rod next to the panel
05:48 PM Tom_L: what size wire to them?
05:48 PM Tom_L: that might just be a fuse
05:48 PM JT-Shop: a deep ground rode is the best
05:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (4 ground rods at the tower)
05:49 PM Tom_L: iirc mine is 6-8'
05:49 PM JT-Shop: ah ok you should be ok
05:49 PM Tom_L: just check the ground wires once in a while
05:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> my thought too
05:50 PM JT-Shop: the other thing you can do is put some metal bit above the rest and connect it to the ground rods
05:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I think #6 to the ground rods
05:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> which is probably small - but from what I read - that is about all the rods can handle anyway
05:51 PM Tom_L: i watched it jump across ceramic insulators on the guy wires on a radio tower here once
05:51 PM JT-Shop: https://www.amazon.com/Lightning-Pre-Discharge-Optimized-Electrical-Industrial/dp/B0BLSZTL7G?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A2ICH2ZOJ7Y2DX
05:51 PM Tom_L: you used to see those spikes on top of barn roofs all over here
05:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I thought - the tower being grounded - the less likely it is going to be struck.
05:52 PM JT-Shop: actually the tower will get struck before trees if it has a lower resistance path to ground
05:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> JT-Shop: have you played with the 7i97t much?
05:54 PM JT-Shop: just a little when programming mesact
05:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> The output led's glow a bit - but get brighter when you command them to be high, Normal?
05:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (like they always glow a bit)
05:54 PM JT-Shop: that's a good question to pcw but he seems to not be here
05:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> eh - that's ok - I was just wondering. It is probably fine
05:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol - I figured I needed another power supply - was supprised to see everthing come up with just he 5 volts
05:56 PM JT-Shop: I just use usb 5v for testing
05:59 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, are you testing for voltile_home now?
05:59 PM Tom_L: it's not in any of my ini yet
06:00 PM JT-Shop: the motion mode should change to free and I should catch that
06:01 PM Tom_L: so you could have some unhome and some not under estop/power off
06:02 PM JT-Shop: any joint that is not homed sets motion mode to free
06:02 PM Tom_L: so one would toggle them all?
06:03 PM JT-Shop: if VOLATILE_HOME does that we should be good to go
06:03 PM JT-Shop: ??
06:04 PM Tom_L: i'm trying to wrap my head around it a bit
06:04 PM JT-Shop: so one would toggle them all? not sure what you're asking
06:04 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:04 PM JT-Shop: dunno what one and them is
06:05 PM Tom_dev: pretty sure i have the latest commit
06:05 PM * JT-Shop retires to the house
06:06 PM Tom_dev: estop, power on, home all...estop tripped, estop reset, home buttons go enabled again
06:06 PM Tom_dev: after power on
06:06 PM Tom_dev: no VOLATILE_HOME in the ini
06:08 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> Here there -- I am trying to install LinuxCNC, but when going into install mode, I receive an error stating it cannot mount my nvme drive due to invalid parameters. If I boot into live mode, it sees the drive fine.
06:08 PM lcnc-relay: Given I can see the drive in live mode, is there a way to kick off installation from the desktop?
06:11 PM Tom_dev: JT-Shop, i see no change with VOLATILE_HOME = 0 or 1
06:11 PM Tom_dev: once estop is reset and power on, all buttons show homed
06:15 PM Tom_L: abigmoocow, a little more detail? debian12? installing from a cd?
06:16 PM Tom_L: preempt-rt?
06:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> abigmoocow I have had better luck installing from the live mode installer
06:19 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> Debian 12 -- using LinuxCNC 2.9.3 release. Installating from bootable USB. Debian 12 from debian.org installs fine.
06:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> give it a try
06:20 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> Is there a doc on how to kick off install from live mode?
06:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> oh - I thought there was a icon on the desktop.. Maybe that has changed?
06:20 PM Tom_L: if you have debian 12 installed, install lcnc from synaptic package manager then upgrade
06:20 PM Tom_L: also make sure you've installed preempt-rt kernel the same way
06:20 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> The install I did of Debian 12 was not patched with preempt-rt kernel.
06:21 PM Tom_L: i found that to be the easiest/quickest method
06:21 PM Tom_L: it's in the synaptic packagemanager now
06:21 PM Tom_L: imagine that :)
06:21 PM Tom_L: search for linux-image
06:21 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> I heard there's a strong change all of this will be in 6.22 so no more patching is needed 😛
06:22 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> * 6.12
06:22 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> * chance
06:22 PM Tom_dev: Linux debian12 6.1.0-25-rt-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_RT Debian 6.1.106-3 (2024-08-26) x86_64 GNU/Linux
06:22 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> Only icons are Trash, File System, and Home
06:22 PM Tom_L: that was a while back but it's in package manager
06:23 PM Tom_L: you got a menu don't you?
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> huh.. It has been a while since I have installed linuxcnc
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (and the last few times have been as tom has explained - debian first then package manager linuxcnc and rt_preemt)
06:23 PM Tom_L: i forget what version package manager has but i upgrade from it anywah
06:24 PM Tom_L: http://buildbot2.highlab.com/debian/dists/bookworm/2.9-uspace/binary-amd64/
06:24 PM Tom_L: then install the latest deb from there
06:24 PM Tom_L: linuxcnc-uspace_2.9.3.59.g06c48b5a8e_amd64.deb
06:25 PM Tom_L: easy as slicing pie
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> To overly simplify; install Debian 12 vanilla, then open up package manager and search for preempt-rt kernel, reboot and then find lcnc?
06:25 PM Tom_L: search for linux-images or image i forget
06:25 PM Tom_L: to get the kernel
06:25 PM Tom_L: you want the latest preempt-rt signed one
06:26 PM Tom_L: there will be several to choose from
06:26 PM Tom_L: then search for uspace linuxcnc or something like that.. i forget
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> Alright, grabbing 12.7 right now, will update results in a bit
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> +Debian
06:27 PM Tom_dev: linuxcnc-uspace
06:27 PM Tom_dev: search for that
06:27 PM Tom_dev: 2.9.0 is probably what you'll get then get the deb from that link
06:30 PM Tom_dev: looks like the preempt-rt 6.1.0-25 is the latest
06:30 PM Tom_dev: i'm running 12.7
07:04 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, PR #88
07:39 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
07:43 PM rdtsc: re: lightning - was always curious as to what exactly "kicks off" a strike and the random nature of why it would hit a tree right next to an antenna and not the antenna itself, etc. Radiation is what does it - background radiation and cosmic rays, creating enough of a random, ionized path for avalanche to occur. So there is a strong randomness to a strike, regardless of grounding rods.
07:53 PM Tom_L: nothing to do with telling the truth or lies?
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Could be.. we will probably never know
08:27 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, on a roundbar probe, where would be the logical place to begin probing?
08:28 PM Tom_L: OD
08:28 PM Tom_L: top? right side?
08:37 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> Had to step away and am coming back to this. Is there a recommendation for GNOME or Xfce for LinuxCNC?
08:38 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> I think by default xfce was used when I booted into the live copy?
08:38 PM Tom_L: i prefer mate
08:38 PM Tom_L: but that's up to you
08:38 PM xxcoder: xfce for me, but yeah heavily preferences I think. is there desktop manager expecially bad for latency?
08:50 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> so first world problem here... I don't have a mouse for this machine 😄
08:50 PM lcnc-relay: Do you have the package name handy by chance? I'll install via terminal
08:50 PM Tom_L: not off hand
08:56 PM lcnc-relay: <abigmoocow> It was synaptic 😛 So in package manager, I see linux-image-6.1.0-20-rt-amd6. I should dpkg this file instead? http://buildbot2.highlab.com/debian/dists/bookworm/2.9-uspace/binary-amd64/linuxcnc-uspace_2.9.3.59.g06c48b5a8e_amd64.deb
08:57 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:58 PM Tom_dev: Linux debian12 6.1.0-25-rt-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_RT Debian 6.1.106-3 (2024-08-26) x86_64 GNU/Linux
08:59 PM Tom_L: abigmoocow, i use the signed ones
08:59 PM Tom_L: for the kernel
08:59 PM Tom_L: you need to install linuxcnc from synaptic package manager before you use the deb from highlab
09:00 PM Tom_L: highlab isn't a full install that i know of
09:00 PM Tom_L: it may be but i've always installed it over an older install
09:01 PM Tom_L: 2 separate files. one is the preempt-rt kernel and the other is the newest linuxcnc image
09:01 PM Tom_L: install the kernel first
09:09 PM Tom_L: abigmoocow, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/configs/kernel_version.png
09:11 PM Tom_L: if you have no mouse, you can use the spacebar to select it
09:17 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
