#linuxcnc Calendar
12:03 AM Kevin`: those (cardputer) are super cool, but I dunno what i'd actually /do/ with one of them. it deserves some sort of grand project. or an emulator I guess.
03:36 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:22 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:38 AM Tom_L: morning
04:45 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:45 AM Tom_L: so to reproduce the spindle off error with mdi:
04:45 AM Tom_dev: estop on, power on, home all, Spindle Fwd (starts at 100), Push MDI100 and the spindle is OFF, the Spindle Fwd button is still enabled
04:46 AM Tom_L: s/MDI100/MDIS100
04:47 AM Tom_L: then if you push Spindle Fwd button again, it is disabled but the spindle is turned on Fwd again
04:54 AM Tom_L: oh, the other one was resetting Start Line when a program Stop is encountered
04:55 AM Tom_L: i started a new ui to see and encountered something but i'll verify it before i complain. i may have been doing something wrong
05:07 AM Tom_L: i'm betting the reson the MDI turns the spindle off is it switches mode from manual to mdi
05:29 AM Deejay: moin
06:27 AM JT-Cave: hot and muggy here
06:32 AM Tom_L: 81
06:33 AM JT-RTAI: https://pasteboard.co/HIERiUTALGMg.png
06:35 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/RTAI_TEST/RTAI_I5_Histogram.png
06:39 AM JT-Cave: emc won't launch in rtai the config picker just freezes up
06:39 AM Tom_L: yup
06:39 AM Tom_L: oh not even axis?
06:40 AM JT-Cave: not even axis
06:40 AM Tom_L: mine starts up
06:40 AM JT-Cave: flex at least gives an error
06:42 AM JT-Cave: the latency test and latency-histogram both work
06:47 AM JT-RTAI: https://pasteboard.co/3aBv0dPEwBfl.png
06:53 AM JT-RTAI: where are the rtai downloads at?
06:53 AM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/downloads/
06:53 AM Tom_L: bottom
06:53 AM JT-RTAI: thanks
06:56 AM JT-RTAI: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc/53088-debian-12-rtai
06:58 AM Tom_L: how do you round the tab corners?
06:58 AM Tom_L: nevermind
06:58 AM Tom_L: found it
07:08 AM Tom_L: making a new ui... added 'Recent' to the menu and i have 2 when i run it. there's only one in the ui file
07:09 AM Tom_L: one has the sub menu, the other doesn't
07:09 AM Tom_L: but the issue i had yesterday isn't there now so it was a me problem
07:13 AM Tom_L: JT-RTAI, did you checksum the files?
07:20 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:21 AM Tom_shop: Linux bookworm 5.4.258-rtai-amd64 #2 SMP Thu Oct 19 11:54:56 BST 2023 x86_64 GNU/Linux
07:21 AM Tom_shop: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/2.9.2_on_RTAI.png
07:22 AM Tom_shop: dunno why it says RPI, maybe a config i copied..
07:25 AM Tom_L: gawd it's muggy out
07:27 AM Tom_L: JT-RTAI, you sure you installed all 3 files?
07:27 AM Tom_L: just a sanity check
07:38 AM JT-Cave: pretty sure I did but I can do it over again it's just on a ssd
07:39 AM JT-RTAI: yup gdebi says they are all installed
07:59 AM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
09:20 AM * JT-Cave waits for Tom_L to break "it"
09:20 AM Tom_L: soon as you push run from line it resets Start Line. not when you push Stop
09:20 AM Tom_L: you should have kept quiet!
09:21 AM Tom_L: the spindle one looks good now
09:21 AM JT-Cave: yup just as soon as you start a program rfl is set to 0
09:23 AM Tom_L: designer does some crazy stuff
09:23 AM JT-Cave: how's that?
09:23 AM Tom_L: first time i started a new ui, run program was enabled all the time and didn't work
09:24 AM Tom_L: the next time i started over reload showed 2x on the menu
09:24 AM Tom_L: i've been having mouse button issues too though so who knows
09:26 AM JT-Cave: check the action editor in designer for dups
09:26 AM Tom_L: i did
09:26 AM Tom_L: and i opened the ui in an editor and searched for 'reload' and only found it once
09:26 AM JT-Cave: look in the action editor
09:27 AM Tom_L: i dumped it already
09:27 AM JT-Cave: lol
09:27 AM Tom_L: i'll start a new one again after while
09:27 AM Tom_L: i'm just practicing
09:28 AM Tom_L: i didn't look that hard, but do you explain to pull the actions from the side bar to put on the tool bar?
09:28 AM Tom_L: first time, i pulled them from the menu itself which was a bust
09:29 AM Tom_L: have you cut parts with your new bp gui?
09:30 AM JT-Cave: yup
09:30 AM JT-Cave: and nope
09:30 AM JT-Cave: reverse them
09:30 AM Tom_L: reverse what?
09:31 AM JT-Cave: my answers lol
09:31 AM Tom_L: heh
09:31 AM JT-Cave: I don't see where I mention anything about how to build the toolbar
09:31 AM Tom_L: also is there a list of actions somewhere? i haven't been over your dox with a fine tooth comb yet
09:32 AM Tom_L: a non noob with no designer experience may appreciate it
09:39 AM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/flexgui/menu.html
09:52 AM roycroft: i'm going to get my mill-drill today
09:52 AM roycroft: but it's going to storage for a while
09:53 AM * roycroft might also get the welders
09:58 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:00 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, is that new or was i not looking?
10:01 AM JT-Shop: some new
10:01 AM * JT-Shop wants to get the FE mount done TODAY!
10:02 AM Tom_L: still working on it?
10:02 AM JT-Shop: done prototyping I think
10:03 AM Tom_L: measure once, cut twice... errr..
10:04 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/ufeUDvApTLhqGWCknrXkIekq/20240629_095747.jpg
10:04 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/aLFXlRYkARhkdEsLdCwTLdXT/20240626_164122.jpg
10:04 AM Tom_L: cute
10:04 AM Tom_L: how you gonna mill it?
10:14 AM Tom_L: PR #33 for flex up
10:38 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, is 'Recent' part of Open action?
10:38 AM JT-Shop: no
10:38 AM Tom_L: every time i add Recent i get 2
10:39 AM Tom_L: one with a list and one with nothing
10:39 AM Tom_L: i removed it from the menu and it's still there with the list
10:39 AM Tom_L: done it 3-4 times now
10:39 AM JT-Shop: you don't add recent it's automagic
10:39 AM Tom_L: that's why i was asking if it was part of Open
10:40 AM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/flexgui/menu.html#recent-files
10:40 AM JT-Shop: it's not part of open but open adds files to recent
10:40 AM Tom_L: shows you i don't read your docs :)
10:40 AM JT-Shop: yup
10:41 AM Tom_L: any other automagic ones?
10:45 AM JT-Cave: nope
10:58 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> bought some 4 port poe + sfp port. (for network up the hill) and it came non poe.. after going around and around with the vender explaining that it doesn't actually have any sfp module (he wanted me to rememove the module and put it in the new poe enabled ones he was sending. I finally was like - ok - I will do that - thank you.. And he is sending the new switches..
10:58 AM Tom_L: heh
11:04 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, what does touchoff_system_cb do? i think it may be leftover and not used
11:04 AM Tom_L: or renamed...
11:05 AM Tom_L: change_cs_n maybe?
11:05 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> we will try to fix the RTAI issues soon, memleak is back to coding again
11:05 AM Tom_L: button instead of a combo box now?
11:06 AM Tom_L: capn, good to hear
11:07 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> andy mentioned it's lots of work to configure the builds for RTAI since somebody that will remain nameless pulled automatic RTAI config/build support from LCNC a couple of years ago
11:07 AM Tom_L: woopsie
11:08 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> I saw JT's post https://forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc/53088-debian-12-rtai as well 😦
11:08 AM Tom_L: yeah
11:08 AM JT-Shop: I love this note in my DX32 control manual for the Discovery 308 "If tapping first in the part program you MUST make a G1 move (in outer space is ok) before you rigid tap"
11:09 AM Tom_L: someone had a sense of humor
11:12 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, what is touchoff_system_cb for?
11:12 AM Tom_L: it's in the code but i don't see what it does
11:12 AM lcnc-relay: <die_limonade> Can somebody give me a hint on how to enable SPI on my rasberry pi4? I am using the Raspberry Pi 4 OS based on Debian Bookworm
11:13 AM Tom_L: is there a config on the menu?
11:14 AM Tom_L: it's been a while... and with bookworm it may be different now
11:14 AM Tom_L: setings or config or something like that. if it's not on the menu there i'd be lost
11:15 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Paolo is 80 yo now and slowing down so he doesn't touch the official RTAI much. Maybe it's time to discuss RTAI vs Xenomai. RTAI is also stuck at ~ kernel 5.4 since it needs someone proficient in x86 assembly to make some changes to bring it up to 6.x
11:15 AM Tom_L: sudo raspi-config?
11:17 AM lcnc-relay: <die_limonade> sudo raspi-conif doesnt work, i have checked that
11:17 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Last testing I heard about comparing RTAI to Xenomai performance was that there was maybe a few uS difference between the two on the same hardware
11:17 AM Tom_L: they changed how to do it in bookworm then
11:18 AM Tom_L: i haven't tried under debian 12
11:20 AM JT-Shop: Tom_L, https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui/blob/master/flexgui/src/libflexgui/startup.py#L327
11:20 AM Tom_L: i saw that
11:20 AM Tom_L: is it still used?
11:20 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> the other project is to build a version of u-boot and RT Linux for the Rpi or OrangePi's for LCNC, everything I have seen is just patched and non-optimized
11:22 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, ok i see what it does
11:22 AM Tom_L: looked in the var file for the answer..
11:23 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> the argument for using Pi's vs PC's is power consumption, 5W controller vs 50W adds up over time, a local makerspace noticed saving $85/year per machine in electricity costs
11:23 AM JT-Shop: https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui/blob/master/flexgui/src/libflexgui/commands.py#L221
11:24 AM Tom_L: it doesn't change to that offset but it sets the coordinates for the one selected
11:25 AM JT-Shop: I'm not sure if that works or not...
11:25 AM Tom_L: it changes the var file
11:26 AM Tom_L: but not the active G5x
11:32 AM * JT-Shop calls an audible for nap time
11:34 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> snack first then nap?
12:01 PM BorgPipe: is there ink that stains skin permanently ?
12:02 PM Tom_L: indelible ink isn't quite permanent but doesn't clean off easily
12:02 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> tatoo
12:03 PM BorgPipe: when ai designs that people will probably wreck eachother
12:03 PM Tom_L: used alot in cert stamping of parts
12:05 PM Tom_L: roguish, if it weren't imbedded i would question how permanent it is
12:06 PM Tom_L: no idea what they use
12:07 PM Tom_L: so far, mine are all clear
12:20 PM Tom_L: magnetic ink
12:20 PM Tom_L: google it
12:20 PM Tom_L: kindof interesting
12:22 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> for something linuxcnc specific? you shouldnt need to do anyuthing
12:28 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, you need someone with a lathe now willing to make a flexgui for it
12:38 PM JT-Shop: yup
12:41 PM * JT-Shop makes a few chips on the BP
12:42 PM Tom_L: working on a new ui
12:59 PM JT-Shop: andypugh_, just replied to my post about rtai and I'm using the wrong debs it seems
12:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/zJiBRKTlJTbHrZGLqcbwjEqo/PXL_20240629_170845809.MP.jpg

12:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> needed a stout boring bar that fit in the latern on the monarch
01:00 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, the ones from the download page aren't right?
01:01 PM Tom_L: LinuxCNC package for RTAI kernel 5.4.256
01:01 PM Tom_L: RTAI Kernel 5.4.258
01:01 PM Tom_L: RTAI modules
01:01 PM Tom_L: that's what i used
01:27 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> test 123
01:27 PM Tom_L: nak 456
01:28 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, MDI S100 should be disabled during program run
01:31 PM CaptHindsight: Test 321
01:31 PM Tom_L: fail 654
01:33 PM Tom_L: roguish you around?
01:36 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Tom_L: waz up?
01:36 PM Tom_L: wanna critique a ui?
01:36 PM Tom_L: working on a mill ui
01:39 PM JT-Cave: tried to run a sim on rtai and now everything is read only and firefox won't start
01:40 PM * JT-Cave goes back to the fe mount
01:40 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Tom_L: sure, i'll check it out
01:42 PM Tom_L: lemme iron out a couple things
01:42 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> no hurry, no worry
01:44 PM rdtsc: @die_lemonade try menu_config
01:44 PM Tom_L: roguish, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/example/
01:46 PM rdtsc: @BorgPipe - henna
01:46 PM rdtsc: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henna
01:47 PM BorgPipe: henna mixed with something that can penetrate deeper maybe a way to get through skin barriers
01:48 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> henna color you like
01:50 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> https://youtu.be/Fa7ynUrag4A?feature=shared&t=25
02:06 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, buttons that use 'function mdi' & MDI S100 button should be disabled during Run Program
02:09 PM JT-Shop: ok
02:16 PM * Tom_L takes a break
02:23 PM xxcoder: wow very different decking style https://youtu.be/7c3xVfQ98Is
02:23 PM xxcoder: no wood
02:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> well that went pretty smooth...
02:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/ezdWnlVylBfNjDgAjYvnVKwd/PXL_20240629_191027155.jpg

02:25 PM xxcoder: made pip[e extender?
02:26 PM BorgPipe: Silver Nitrate might turn skin blue
02:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> it is antanna mast using water pipe
02:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> the top pivot point as it will be run with a rotor
02:27 PM xxcoder: ahh ok
02:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> was wondering how I was going to keep rain off the bearing - then it dawned on me that a roof pipe vent flashing would work perfectly
02:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> that bearing had concrete dried on it.. I have no clue what it was used for
02:33 PM xxcoder: man big machinist videos lineup this sat
02:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> good day - I haven't machined in a while...
02:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/izOuLGSirIJYlECfGrxlZHDd/PXL_20240629_193104371.MP.jpg
02:47 PM Tom_L: how many of those stuck in your foot?
02:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Lol. I smell like burnt hair
02:50 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> whats with the orange name, CaptainHindsight? i want an orange name too...
02:50 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/DKYOecpXZXvzGHDdgSwULVom/20240629_144417.jpg
02:50 PM xxcoder: hes moderator
02:51 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> 😦
02:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Nice!
02:51 PM Tom_L: taking shape
02:51 PM xxcoder: tom nice
02:51 PM Tom_L: you need a radius tool for the edges
02:52 PM JT-Shop: going to use onecnc and the vmc for that
02:52 PM Tom_L: or a chamfer tool
02:57 PM Tom_L: is this one of those $900 one off parts?
02:58 PM JT-Shop: yup
03:26 PM xxcoder: oh new name for blondihacks, blendx lol
03:28 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
03:29 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/lSotOJvFRhXeIFTElyIBCkKS/20240629_152328.jpg
03:30 PM Tom_L: looks like a stand for a beer
03:30 PM JT-Shop: lol
03:31 PM xxcoder: with enogh effort, everything can be stand for beer lol
03:46 PM xxcoder: lol good blondihack jokes as usua;
03:52 PM * JT-Shop takes 5 with Dave
03:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Love that
05:04 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, mdi enable is better
05:06 PM JT-Shop: :)
05:07 PM Tom_L: i can still confuse start line
05:07 PM Tom_L: it is better
05:07 PM JT-Shop: how
05:11 PM Tom_L: if i click on a line while the program is running, it doesn't reset to 0 at the end of the program run
05:11 PM Tom_L: it's already past the code that resets it
05:12 PM Tom_L: the other option would be to disable it during program run but not during run from line
05:12 PM Tom_L: it being the start line
05:13 PM Tom_L: i don't see that it crashes anything
05:15 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/example/
05:16 PM Tom_L: there's one i've been working on if you wanna see
05:19 PM Tom_L: if you put an M7 M8 or M9 in the gcode, the coolant buttons toggle accordingly
05:19 PM Tom_L: i thought that was kinda cool
05:22 PM Tom_L: the S word is also updated from within the program
05:24 PM JT-Shop: yup anytime the s word changes the settings speed is updated
05:25 PM JT-Shop: run from line only resets at the start of a program
05:25 PM Tom_L: right
05:25 PM JT-Shop: ran that gui a while ago
05:26 PM Tom_L: just added a big estop
05:26 PM Tom_L: few other things..nothing major
05:27 PM JT-Shop: make a sub directory in examples and do a pr
05:27 PM JT-Shop: I think some sub directories would be good for each example
05:27 PM Tom_L: i mostly was testing all the widgets worked as advertised
05:28 PM Tom_L: i'm gonna rename the file
05:28 PM JT-Shop: ok
05:28 PM Tom_L: planned to anyway so i don't get mixed up
05:28 PM JT-Shop: I get cornfused easy
05:29 PM Tom_L: Simple_mill maybe
05:33 PM JT-Shop: one of the features I really like is flex remembers the location and size of the screen
05:33 PM JT-Shop: just don't call it mill_basic LOL
05:33 PM Tom_L: mill_1 i think
05:33 PM JT-Shop: Mill works for me
05:33 PM Tom_L: there may be more
05:33 PM JT-Shop: or mill_3 for 3 axes
05:34 PM Tom_L: that's fine
05:39 PM Tom_L: i put 3 mdi buttons for G54..56 on this. i'll never use more offsets in a program than that
05:39 PM xxcoder: lol largest number of offsets I ever used was 9
05:39 PM xxcoder: I modified old 4 item gcode into 9 for new fixture
05:40 PM xxcoder: it was a lot better. 4 fixture ones was really crap
05:40 PM xxcoder: E1 to E9
05:40 PM xxcoder: old fadal if you cant figure from coord using E rather than g54+ lol
05:41 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cincinnati/Cincinnati_7.jpg
05:41 PM Tom_L: i count 18 vises
05:41 PM Tom_L: that may be 3 parts though now that i think about it
05:41 PM xxcoder: and space for way more. I guess it uses g59 + gcode for it
05:41 PM xxcoder: forgot what follows up after g59 for more coords
05:41 PM Tom_L: no, he didn't use vises on those big TI parts
05:42 PM Tom_L: G59.x
05:42 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/lMIkenmLnlIQEkYsOZLwyzhb/20240629_173545.jpg
05:42 PM xxcoder: ah yes thnks
05:42 PM Tom_L: sexy
05:42 PM xxcoder: high end
05:42 PM Tom_L: well worth the $900
05:42 PM JT-Shop: yup I'm worth every penny I pay myself
05:46 PM Tom_L: check #34 and see if they run ok for you
05:47 PM Tom_L: oops. i'm a month off on the pr date
05:48 PM Tom_L: there's a .var.bak file you can delete.. missed that one
06:03 PM Tom_L: where do you change the estop button wording?

06:06 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:06 PM Tom_L: i wanted to try and change the color based on state
06:06 PM JT-Shop: use the object name
06:06 PM Tom_L: in the qss file?
06:07 PM JT-Shop: yes
06:07 PM Tom_L: i'll fiddle with it a bit until i get tired
06:14 PM Tom_L: you gave all the actions names... i remember that noww
06:15 PM Tom_L: where did you hide that...
06:23 PM JT-Cave: you give action names when you make a menu item
06:24 PM Tom_L: i found your tool button names but haven't quite figured out what i want exactly
06:24 PM Tom_L: https://www.gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/flexgui/style.html
06:24 PM Tom_L: i remember you adding those flex_ names
06:25 PM JT-Cave: flex_ is for hal buttons
06:25 PM Tom_L: the toolbar buttons react to this but not doing what i want yet
06:26 PM Tom_L: hoover and pressed but what about state change like is_on or is_off
06:26 PM JT-Cave: I wish rtai worked the latency is amazing
06:26 PM Tom_L: i know right?
06:26 PM JT-Cave: actions may not have that...
06:27 PM JT-Cave: buttons have checked state
06:27 PM Tom_L: i read about it a while back when i did stop and quit in red
06:27 PM JT-Cave: and pressed and released
06:27 PM Tom_L: i don't think it's as easy with actions
06:27 PM JT-Cave: no you have to target the button but I forget how
06:28 PM Tom_L: i got it to hoover in red
06:28 PM Tom_L: but not stay
07:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol - maybe people are finally coming around to abom using cnc... lol

11:06 PM roycroft: we got the mill-drill moved to day, and a pickup load of sheet goods
11:06 PM roycroft: two trips - one more than i expected
11:07 PM xxcoder: cast removal must have gave you more energy by not carrying it all time
11:14 PM roycroft: my helper and i were both pretty tired after the mill-drill move, but we both know there's a lot of moving work to do still, so we went for it
11:15 PM xxcoder: :)
11:15 PM roycroft: and there's another good reason for moving the sheet goods today - most of the cabinets in my kitchen are missing shelves, and because of that, i've not moved much of my old kitchen yet
11:16 PM roycroft: now that i've been liberated from my wrist brace, and have permission to do stuff with my left arm, i can make some shelves and get my kitchen moved
11:19 PM xxcoder: nice
