01:40 AM flyback: yeah be careful with that CaptHindsight you can affixiate yourself
02:01 AM CaptHindsight: :)
04:09 AM Tom_L: morning

04:49 AM JT-Cave1: morning
05:17 AM JT-Cave1 is now known as JT-Cave

06:09 AM JT-Cave: what does apt-cache policy 'linuxcnc-uspace' return on rtai?

06:52 AM JT-Cave: thanks
06:52 AM JT-Cave: what does apt-cache policy 'linuxcnc' return?
06:54 AM Tom_L: already turned it off and am out the door
06:54 AM JT-Cave: k

07:00 AM JT-Cave: interesting
07:02 AM Tom_L: it didn't post it...
07:02 AM Tom_L: i'll check later

07:07 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> So I am setting up the servo as a spindle and in the delta auto gain tuning the software is not giving me estJL/JM figure. I am assuming as it is too unstable at the moment
07:51 AM JT-Cave: installing linuxcnc need 271 packages talk about bloated software
08:26 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> JT-Cave: try "sudo apt install linuxcnc-uspace --no-install-recommends"
08:29 AM JT-Cave: thanks, it's already installed on rtai
08:32 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> đ
08:34 AM JT-Cave: I think most of it is for all the damn gui's that are included that you don't need
08:35 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> but apache and inkscape?
08:35 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> đ˛
08:41 AM * JT-Cave has to get ready to take the wife to the doctor in Cape which is 90 minutes away
09:30 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> How would i make it so a spindle in step dir decelerate rather than just stopping
09:32 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> As I am getting a position error on the servo when stopping the spindle
09:40 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Cave: don't need all that office crap either...
09:42 AM pcw--home: simonbasil: set the stepgen acceleration
09:43 AM pcw--home: also you cannot use stepgen enable for spindle on/off
09:48 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> I have set the stepgen acceleration and it ramps up fine without error. Its fine stooping from 250rpm but at 2500 rpm I get the position error
09:49 AM pcw--home: how is stepgen enable connected in the hal file?
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> I'll send it in a bit darm paste bin expired
09:54 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> https://forum.linuxcnc.org/10-advanced-configuration/40364-ramp-out-step-dir-servo-spindle
09:55 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> I did find this would this continue pulse when m5 is called or is this a purely time delay
10:02 AM pcw--home: Its simpler to just use the stepgen accel and wire the spindle stepgen enable to machine-on
10:03 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> I thought so too
10:03 AM pcw--home: (I'm guessing your current issue is that you have the spindle stepgen enable wired to spindle-on in your hal file)
10:03 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Ok perfect
10:04 AM pcw--home: so as soon as you stop the spindle you get an instant 0 velocity from the stepgen
10:04 AM pcw--home: rather than a stepgen accel limited ramp down
10:10 AM lcnc-relay: <perry_j1987> pcw any plans for something akin to a raspberry pi compute module + 7i96 type combo board? heh
10:13 AM pcw--home: Is the compute module RPI4 hardware?
10:15 AM lcnc-relay: <perry_j1987> they make a compute module for each gen of rpi if i understand right
10:15 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Is there any issues that can arise from having the stepgen permanently on?
10:15 AM lcnc-relay: <perry_j1987> think they also had pcie access earlier on in the cycle vs the full pi boards
10:16 AM lcnc-relay: <perry_j1987> but the thought just came across my mind. that'd be pretty sweet to just pop a compute module into a ram slot on the mesa board and away you go
10:17 AM pcw--home: simonbasil as long as LinuxCNC always sets the spindle speed to 0 when the spindle is off it should be OK
10:19 AM pcw--home: you could force this if there was any circumstance that violates the spindle-off = 0 spindle speed rule
10:21 AM pcw--home: I think the current pncconf wires spindle stepgen enable to machine-on (so most faults will stop the spindle)
10:21 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Ok cheers
10:22 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Ok perfect thanks man
10:35 AM rdtsc2: A compute-module version of the Rpi (CM4, CM5) would eliminate the ribbon cable, but also eliminate all of the other I/O (micro SD, video, usb, ethernet, etc.) Would require putting several of them on the Mesa board... not ideal from a rework standpoint.
10:39 AM rdtsc2: Many feel it's a better idea to go the mini-ATX or ITX route. Much more horsepower for things like large, high-res monitors.
10:39 AM lcnc-relay: <perry_j1987> ya it'd need conductivity added but... it'd be nice adn clean
10:56 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> Roguish yup that and 200 language packs for every software lol
10:58 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT: I really dislike all the crap. back in the online meetings, it was suggested to have stripped down .iso. not sure what happened to the idea
10:58 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> pcw-home we saw setting the spindle speed to 0 could create a runaway
10:59 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> Probably no one did anything about it
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> IIRC there is a way to install Debian without any extra software
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> HAL: https://paste.debian.net/1321769/
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: INI: https://paste.debian.net/1321770/
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT: https://www.a-m-c.com/product/12a8/
11:02 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> got a pair of these
11:02 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Do I just change :
11:02 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> net spindle-enable <= spindle.0.on
11:02 AM lcnc-relay: to
11:02 AM lcnc-relay: net machine_on <= spindle.0.on
11:03 AM pcw--home: JT: How does setting the spindle speed to 0 create a runaway:
11:04 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Sorry ignore that
11:04 AM lcnc-relay: net spindle-enable => stepgen.2.enable
11:04 AM lcnc-relay: to
11:04 AM lcnc-relay: net machine_on => stepgen.2.enable
11:04 AM pcw--home: only the second change
11:05 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Yep
11:07 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> roguish I'll have to look when I get home
11:07 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ah, ok. you
11:07 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> you're travelling...... good luck
11:07 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> pcw it happened to tom
11:08 AM pcw--home: This was specifically related to step/dir driven spindles
11:08 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> It was in Flex and that uses the python interface
11:08 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> Ah ok, missed that
11:09 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Is m19 feasible with a single index encoder
11:10 AM pcw--home: (if you connect spindle enable to stepgens enable, when the spindle is turned off you get an abrupt spindle stop rather than ramp-down)
11:10 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> I remember something about that
11:12 AM pcw--home: Both Mesa's and LinuxCNC;s software stepgen work that way (enable false = stop generating pulses)
11:13 AM pcw--home: this is pretty harsh on step/dir spindles that are basically operating in position mode
11:29 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Just thinking does g96 with css on a lathe work in the x negative direction? A lot of my tools are setup this way and curious if it will affect g96
12:06 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I have a drawer full of steppers and drives I should setup a spindle
12:16 PM Loetmichel: Hmm, any US american semi drivers here? Native speakers preferred. Whats that Truck brake called that utilizes a flap in the engine exhaust to slow down the truck with back pressure on the engine?

12:18 PM roycroft: which is illegal to use in most jurisdictions around here
12:19 PM Loetmichel: Is that the word for it? Jake brake? It has a particular "roaring" sound when used.
12:19 PM roycroft: yes
12:19 PM Loetmichel: Thanks.
12:19 PM roycroft: "compression release engine brake" is the formal term for it
12:20 PM roycroft: but there are signs all over the west saying "use of jake brakes is illegal"
12:20 PM roycroft: so the local authorities use the common term
12:20 PM Loetmichel: Its allowed here in germany, and i had to explain it to an indian co-worker today which was not happy that one truck used it next to her.
12:20 PM Loetmichel: but i didnt knew the word in english and explaining the concept was lost on her because no knowledge of engines.
12:21 PM Loetmichel: may i ask why its not allowed over the pond?
12:21 PM roycroft: because of the onise
12:21 PM roycroft: noise
12:21 PM Loetmichel: because of the annoying noise?
12:21 PM Loetmichel: ah, makes sense.
12:22 PM Tom_L: they like their quiet on the left coast
12:22 PM Loetmichel: over here its encouraged to use on long downslopes out of the mountains because semis tend to overheat the brakes there.
12:22 PM Tom_L: it is probably a must in the mountains
12:22 PM Tom_L: that and sand traps
12:23 PM Loetmichel: you mean "runaway lanes" before bridges and cities after a long downslope? those are filled with fine gravel here, not sand.
12:23 PM Tom_L: yes
12:23 PM Tom_L: sand traps :)
12:24 PM roycroft: yes, we have those by pretty much ever steep and/or long hill
12:24 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Tom I think I need to figure out if the Rte kernel is uspace or rtsi first
12:24 PM Tom_L: RTAI is not uspace
12:24 PM roycroft: the runaway lane levels off and then goes up about one degree
12:24 PM roycroft: and goes from paved to sand
12:25 PM Loetmichel: re: the noise a jake brake makes: I actually like that sound. It sure is less annoying than the sound of a semi crashing into the end of a traffic jam because of faded brakes. :D
12:25 PM Tom_L: JT, i was told by andy not to use uspace versions on RTAI
12:26 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Right
12:26 PM Tom_L: didn't quite follow your auto correct typing
12:26 PM Tom_L: or fumble fingers which i'm known for
12:26 PM Loetmichel: But thanks anyway for the word. Maybe the co-worker will know what it is with the correct word tomorrow. :) (I slightly doubt it though)
12:26 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> To find the emc version I need to know if it rtai or uspace
12:27 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Freaking phone sucks
12:27 PM Tom_L: currently flex won't work on rtai
12:28 PM Tom_L: i have the latest RTAI installed on the old mill pc and preempt-rt on a newer pc for testing
12:28 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I'm working on mesact
12:28 PM Tom_L: ok
12:29 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I installed rtai on a pc to test with
12:29 PM Tom_L: i found a couple things on flex but won't bother you with them for a while
12:29 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Ok I'll test flex on rtai
12:29 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> As well
12:31 PM Tom_L: solaar is nice but i found out if you pair a mouse with it on a dongle, it unpairs it from another one
12:31 PM Tom_L: kinda defeating my purpose
12:32 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I tried to install rtai from the docs but a lot has been removed so the docs make no sense at all
12:33 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Good thing I'm the install master
12:33 PM Tom_L: install debian 12 from their site then install the 3 downloads from the download page
12:33 PM Tom_L: ignore all other docs
12:33 PM Tom_L: any other docs you may find are out of date
12:34 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Yup Debian 12 and the debs
12:34 PM Tom_L: some dude here the other day found that out too
12:35 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> It's a shame the docs are in such a mess
12:35 PM Tom_L: dev doesn't stand still either
12:37 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Did you test the fix to mdi in flex?
12:37 PM Tom_L: yes
12:37 PM Tom_L: maybe?
12:37 PM Tom_L: i have the latest pull
12:38 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I need to clean up that code a bit
12:38 PM Tom_L: it somewhat works
12:38 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> LOL
12:38 PM Tom_L: i was in a hurry this am so i didn't work it over like i should
12:39 PM Tom_L: i will say, MDI S100 should reset the spindle fwd rev buttons if they are on since MDI S100 turns the spindle off
12:39 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Basically I don't like the same code in two places
12:40 PM Tom_L: i knew that :)
12:40 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> S100 would not turn the spindle off
12:41 PM Tom_L: well it does
12:41 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Hmm
12:41 PM Tom_L: and leaves the spindle fwd button in an active state
12:42 PM Tom_L: 2-3 clicks of the spindle fwd button sorta resets it
12:44 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Remind me when I get home how you triggered that
12:44 PM Tom_L: ok
12:46 PM Tom_L: mdi enabling run run program seems better now
12:47 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Good
12:47 PM Tom_L: oh the other one was start line doesn't reset if you 'stop'
12:48 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Should it?
12:48 PM Tom_L: yes
12:48 PM Tom_L: if you stop and restart the program it starts at 0 not 9 etc
12:49 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Reset to 0?
12:49 PM Tom_L: i would
12:49 PM Tom_L: if a program stop is encountered
12:50 PM Tom_L: if i click on a line it resets it
12:50 PM Tom_L: but not if you stop the program
12:51 PM Tom_L: if you run from line in axis you have to hilite that line each time i think
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Test that
12:52 PM Tom_L: i will after lunch
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Ok
12:53 PM Tom_L: you have to select it each time
12:53 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Ok
12:54 PM Tom_L: it's a right click instead of a button though
12:54 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> We're better
02:31 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L> currently flex won't work on rtai, strange what does flex need that RTAI do be doin?
02:36 PM CaptHindsight: do be or don't be
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: now that we have a new LinuxCNC king can we change the CoC to this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8H9pnSjqs-A
02:43 PM roycroft: when did the old king die?
02:43 PM * roycroft was not informed of the regime change
02:43 PM CaptHindsight: nothing that extreme
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: Jepler just turned over his keys
02:44 PM * roycroft remembers the do bee song
02:44 PM roycroft: when i was a kid, the daily routine was ray raynor, then romper room, and bozo's circus at noon
02:44 PM roycroft: when i was a wee lad, that is
02:45 PM roycroft: and sometimes captain kangaroo was added to the mix
02:45 PM CaptHindsight: no Capt, Kangaroo?
02:45 PM CaptHindsight: yeah
02:45 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> i remember the Capt.
02:45 PM CaptHindsight: whatever happened to Mr. GreenJeans?
02:46 PM CaptHindsight: my morning routine was older brother blasting Zepplin or Rush at 100db until he left for school then it was pretty much like your routine
02:47 PM roycroft: then there were the afternoon cartoons - dick tracy and clutch cargo
02:47 PM roycroft: hosted by frazier thomas, iirc
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: did you have a UHF TV?
02:47 PM roycroft: yes
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: i had to visit Friends houses to watch Speed Racer
02:48 PM roycroft: which is good, since the rest of my family were white sox fans, and they moved to wfld
02:48 PM roycroft: i was the renegade cubs fan, though
02:48 PM roycroft: we watched speed racer
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: what was it like growing up in a rich family? :p
02:49 PM roycroft: and channel 26, i forget the call letters, had ethnic programming - the polish variety hour, shows in lithuanian, etc.
02:49 PM roycroft: hey
02:49 PM roycroft: we had to go next door to watch tv in color for a long time
02:49 PM roycroft: we were not rich
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: oh B&W UHF
02:50 PM roycroft: yeah
02:50 PM roycroft: and our tv was about 15" for a long time
02:50 PM CaptHindsight: you probably had a car as well
02:51 PM roycroft: a '59 chevy biscayne
02:51 PM CaptHindsight: bubble windshield
02:51 PM roycroft: with the big fins
02:51 PM CaptHindsight: nice
02:51 PM roycroft: it was olive green
02:51 PM roycroft: but we upgraded in the late '60s
02:52 PM roycroft: right about when we got the cocker spaniel (and there were the correct number of kids - 3)
02:52 PM roycroft: we got an impala station wagon
02:52 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.streetsideclassics.com/vehicles/5915-atl/1959-chevrolet-biscayne
02:52 PM roycroft: that's the car
02:53 PM CaptHindsight: I had a '69 Biscayne with "3 on the tree"
02:53 PM roycroft: my new car is a 6 speed
02:53 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> and here i thought the first car roycroft rode in was a Model-T đ
02:53 PM roycroft: i haven't had a manual transmission car in a few years
02:54 PM roycroft: the biscayne was the first car my parents owned
02:54 PM roycroft: it's probably the first car i rode in
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: my parents never drove in the US or owned a car
02:55 PM CaptHindsight: my world ended at end of the EL tracks or bus turnaround, unless we flew
02:56 PM roycroft: the biscayne turned into a fred flintstone vehicle after a few years, as did all the cars in chicagl
02:56 PM roycroft: chicago
02:56 PM roycroft: all that salt on the roads in the winters destroyed floorboards
02:56 PM CaptHindsight: yup, floor pan holes and you could access the truck without lifting the lid
02:57 PM Gardenweazel: That car is probably still running in Cuba now!
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: 5 year life was avg for Chicago cars
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: rust would show up by year 3-4
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: 100k miles would also be the end
02:58 PM roycroft: and around here, rust shows up around year 30-40 :)
03:02 PM xxcoder: I wonder if people powder coat bottoms in few cases lol
03:02 PM CaptHindsight: undercoating was popular
03:03 PM CaptHindsight: and Ziebart
03:03 PM roycroft: yes, and some of the undercoating was thick tar
03:03 PM roycroft: like 6mm thick or more
03:03 PM roycroft: that slowed down the rust by about 20 minutes :)
03:03 PM CaptHindsight: it held the water above the pans
03:03 PM CaptHindsight: since it was an "undercoating"
03:05 PM CaptHindsight: powder coating could be a new gimmick but it would require curing with a heatgun or laser
03:16 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
03:22 PM rdtsc: First vehicle I drove was a completely restored 1931 Ford model T. 3-speed on the floor with non-synchromesh gearing - switching from first to second literally took 3 seconds. That was back in... gosh, 1988 I think.
03:26 PM rdtsc: Looked identical to this: https://live.staticflickr.com/3762/10037056914_e07c2f6471_b.jpg
03:28 PM rdtsc: Have pictures... father obtained it in bushel baskets from a barn. Spent years rebuilding everything from the frame up.
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: but you got good at match engine RPM to road speed
03:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: match/matching
03:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I am not there yet...
03:31 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: curing poweder coating with a heat gun is a bad idea. the electrostatic charge that holds the powder in place isnt that strong.
03:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/qgRRSMGjjSyNUaplrmRwxwHt/PXL_20240321_234902452.jpg
03:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> driven about 20 miles so far...
03:32 PM roycroft: i've never heard of anyone doing that before
03:32 PM roycroft: curing power coating is always done in an oven
03:32 PM Loetmichel: indeed
03:33 PM Loetmichel: or with an IR heater.
03:33 PM roycroft: or you can put it in the back yard and let the global climate change do it
03:33 PM roycroft: that might take a little while, though
03:35 PM Loetmichel: depends on the type of powder
03:36 PM Loetmichel: some melt as low as 90°C. could happen if its black on a sunny day
03:36 PM Loetmichel: but most are more like 250°C curing temp
03:36 PM Tom_L: don't forget major astro
03:37 PM Tom_L: for all the space wanna bee's
03:38 PM Tom_L: i guess that was local
03:42 PM roycroft: if you haven't seen the latest xkcd, tom_l, it's about kansas
03:43 PM Tom_L: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8836752/
03:50 PM CaptHindsight: unfortunately lots of car stuff melts when you put it in an oven
03:51 PM roycroft: best not to put your car in the oven, i should think
03:51 PM roycroft: not just because of the melting stuff
03:51 PM CaptHindsight: so you have to get creative with powder coatings
03:51 PM roycroft: but if your oven is full of car, where do you put the pizza?
03:52 PM Tom_L: supposed to hit 105F here, good possibility something will melt
03:52 PM Tom_L: roy, in the rear car window
03:52 PM roycroft: i supposed that could work
03:53 PM roycroft: you'd need a pizza peel with a really really long handle, though
03:53 PM CaptHindsight: Dominoes cooks the "pizza" on the way to your home
03:55 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i pushed the latest for my ui in #32 PR
03:55 PM Tom_L: use it for locating the latest bugs
03:57 PM CaptHindsight: huh Microcenter has LPT cards for $5ea
03:58 PM Tom_L: pcie?
03:59 PM CaptHindsight: PCI
04:02 PM CaptHindsight: ah in store only
04:03 PM Tom_L: yeah, best i see is 3x that
04:04 PM CaptHindsight: old pc 50W, Rpi 3W
04:06 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Parallel-Connected-Printers-Programmers-Scanners/dp/B0CF81D79R (81
04:07 PM CaptHindsight: $9.81
04:07 PM Tom_L: i don't need one atm
04:07 PM CaptHindsight: the problem was that they are made so poorly half the ones that showed up had issues
04:08 PM Tom_L: i did get a cable shipped overnite for $4
04:08 PM Tom_L: so both test PCs have parport & spare ethernet to test on
04:09 PM CaptHindsight: i have a box of them in storage
04:09 PM Tom_L: one had a bad pcie ethernet card
04:09 PM Tom_L: i have a couple spares but they're isa :)
04:09 PM CaptHindsight: unfortunately I'm so clumsy now i might kill myself looking for them
04:10 PM CaptHindsight: Doctor says: yeah, your reflex's probably got slower
04:11 PM Tom_L: my body changed after covid for sure
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: mostly my cancer meds
04:11 PM Tom_L: yeah
04:11 PM Tom_L: that's rough stuff
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: Covid didn't help any
04:12 PM CaptHindsight: no chemo for me, I have to do without testosterone for a few years, yay
04:12 PM CaptHindsight: for men it comes in real handy
04:13 PM Tom_L: undoubtedly better than the alternative
04:13 PM roycroft: it appears my issues with the postal service are evolving
04:13 PM CaptHindsight: stored in a box, yeah
04:13 PM roycroft: a parcel arrived at the post office for me yesterday
04:13 PM roycroft: the status is "out for delivery" today
04:13 PM roycroft: but the mail arrived hours ago
04:14 PM Tom_L: they're in a different time zone
04:14 PM roycroft: so now, instead of lying about a delivery attempt, they're going to just not deliver it today
04:14 PM roycroft: they'll lie about the delivery attempt at the end of the day, instead of at the beginning of the day
04:16 PM CaptHindsight: my postal worked knocked twice this am, then left two packages in the rain outside the door
04:16 PM CaptHindsight: shipped in plastic bags, so not all bad
04:17 PM roycroft: you don't have a door ringer?
04:17 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> hey roy, did you watch the circus show last evening
04:17 PM CaptHindsight: nope, not a fan of those
04:18 PM roycroft: odd, but ok
04:18 PM roycroft: it's just that the postman always rings twice
04:18 PM roycroft: but in your case improvisation was needed, apparently
04:18 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> well, no matter which way it goes, we're all screwed to the wall
04:19 PM roycroft: last night's debate is what screwed us
04:19 PM * roycroft will say no more
04:19 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I could only stomach the first 20 minutes..... that was already too much
04:20 PM CaptHindsight: vote early, vote often
04:21 PM CaptHindsight: Biden sounded much better at the rally today, they should hold those debates before 3pm
04:21 PM CaptHindsight: right after dinner :p
04:22 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> there should be real time fact checking, on screen
04:22 PM roycroft: i think he lost the election last night
04:22 PM roycroft: i think we're in for four more years of tfg
04:23 PM roycroft: i should invest all my money in liquor stocks, because sales are going to go through the roof come january
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ok, tfg ???
04:23 PM Tom_L: let's leave it at that.. i'm starting to feel ill
04:23 PM roycroft: formerly "the former guy"
04:23 PM roycroft: now "the felon guy" :)
04:23 PM roycroft: yeah, i said i was done
04:23 PM roycroft: i did not mean to lie
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> yeah, better quit while we're behind.
04:23 PM roycroft: but i'll show more discpline now
04:23 PM CaptHindsight: the problem should solve itself in another 10-20 years
04:24 PM * roycroft zips his lips
04:25 PM CaptHindsight: the avg viewer was pretty frightened
04:25 PM CaptHindsight: at least we have each other
04:25 PM Tom_L: do we?
04:25 PM xxcoder: whatever comes, just do our best as much as can
04:26 PM Tom_L: the satirists should have a hay day
04:26 PM CaptHindsight: Canada is a short drive until they lock the gate
04:26 PM xxcoder: and what would I do there?
04:26 PM Tom_L: freeze
04:26 PM xxcoder: no marketable skills now
04:27 PM roycroft: canada has its own maga movement happening, and the libs may be out of power soon
04:27 PM CaptHindsight: take up farming
04:27 PM Tom_L: go south and be a drug runner
04:27 PM roycroft: and to answer your question, xxcoder
04:27 PM roycroft: you would go there, and then start saying "sorry" for everything, no matter what
04:27 PM roycroft: but very politely
04:28 PM CaptHindsight: not all Canadians are polite
04:28 PM roycroft: and you would learn to like tim horton's better than dunkin'
04:28 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> as long as ya got money, ya should be welcome
04:28 PM roycroft: it's actually quite difficult to emigrate to canada
04:29 PM roycroft: they have some pretty high standards for admission
04:29 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> visit and don
04:29 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> don't come back
04:29 PM roycroft: tfg can no longer visit his golf courses in scotland
04:29 PM roycroft: they do not issue visas to convicted felons
04:30 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> how about a go-fund-me for a hit
04:30 PM xxcoder: wonder if they would let in convicted felon president
04:30 PM roycroft: he should look at the bright side of that though - he won't accidently see any offshore windmills now
04:32 PM xxcoder: tanj
04:33 PM CaptHindsight: i hear it's easier if you marry your way in or land a job there
04:33 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.immigration.ca/canada-needs-30000-immigrant-farmers-over-the-next-decade-report-says/
04:33 PM xxcoder: yep and I arent marrying type, nor have marketable job lol
04:34 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> do like everyone does here..... just go visit and overstay...........
04:35 PM CaptHindsight: xxcoder: do you know how to work the udders or drive a plow?
04:37 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, also PR #102 for mesact
04:46 PM Loetmichel: I know both. When can i start?
04:52 PM CaptHindsight: Loetmichel: we need you to stay there to keep the Russians distracted :)
04:53 PM Jym: Hello
04:54 PM CaptHindsight: howdy Jym
04:54 PM Jym: CaptHindsight How's it going?
04:55 PM CaptHindsight: good, thanks for asking, how about you?
04:57 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: should they come by here with ill intentions i'll find a way to make them go home. That said: i'd rather be somewhere else then.
05:02 PM andypugh_: So, I made a batch of cross-slide screws and nuts for the Rivett 608 lathe. And offered them to Rivett owners for what I _thought_ they would realise was a really low price. (ÂŁ50 a set)
05:02 PM CaptHindsight: no takers?
05:03 PM andypugh_: Then someone asked if I could make him a metric set, as he had a metric lathe. Oh, and can I do the compound too.
05:03 PM andypugh_: The compound nut is really wierd.
05:04 PM CaptHindsight: have pics?
05:05 PM andypugh_: https://photos.app.goo.gl/RCxvAcnSrE5u3k7k6
05:06 PM andypugh_: But, anyway, I made a set: https://photos.app.goo.gl/RCxvAcnSrE5u3k7k6
05:07 PM andypugh_: But in the process I crashed the mill. Twice. https://photos.app.goo.gl/Vw9BKaUkf7rBY2ck7
05:07 PM CaptHindsight: oh no
05:08 PM CaptHindsight: I almost prefer CNC vs anything manual now since I'm so clumsy
05:08 PM andypugh_: So, I suggested to the guy that the price for all 4 screws and nuts probably should be enough to cover a new vice.
05:09 PM andypugh_: Itâs a CNC mill, but I was squaring stock in semi-manual mode when I crashed it.
05:09 PM andypugh_: And he is _arguing_
05:10 PM andypugh_: This is a job I hadnât volunteered to do, and he talked me into, and that has eaten 10 hours of my evenings this week alone⌠And he doesnât want to pay for a ÂŁ90 vice?
05:10 PM andypugh_: https://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Workholding/Machine-Vices/Precision-Tool-Vices-Type-2
05:11 PM CaptHindsight: horse trade him a vise for his parts
05:11 PM CaptHindsight: those aren't bad prices
05:12 PM CaptHindsight: sorry vice in English English
05:13 PM andypugh_: I think it comes down to folk thinking that CNC makes things really quick and easy. And for one-offs it actually doesnât make _that_ much difference. Cuting the screws is much easier, but on a long thin one with a travelling steady itâs still half an hour. After you have made the blank and set up the machine.
05:13 PM CaptHindsight: yeah only quicker when it's many of something
05:15 PM andypugh_: And the external threading tool snapped this evening. No idea why, it was taking small cuts and just went âpingâ for no apparent reason. I reground it and tried to pick-up the thread, but it was too close to finished and you can see the step, so it wonât do.
05:15 PM andypugh_: So thatâs another 90 mins comletely gone.
05:17 PM andypugh_: I donât think that they realise that I charge so little because they canât afford me :-) If I charged what Ford pay me, there would be no way anyone would want them :-)
05:19 PM Tom_L: is your off clock rate the same as your on the clock rate?
05:19 PM andypugh_: I think what I am bothered about is that I do thos for warm fuzzies and gratitude, and this guy seems to think that a ÂŁ50 custom leadscrew set is a commercial offeringâŚ
05:19 PM Tom_L: we do this for fun ehh?
05:20 PM andypugh_: Yeah, my off-clock rate is normally way higher, as I canât buy more weekends.
05:21 PM andypugh_: But he talked me into and I thought he understood I was doing him a huge favour, which has cost me a milling vice and 6 inserts. (Because I wouldnât have been int he workshop at all that tired without his job)
05:22 PM andypugh_: Anyway, thanks to all you chaps for being one place I knew I could vent, and you would understand :-)
05:22 PM Tom_L: good to hear you're still doing
05:22 PM Tom_L: even against better judgement
05:23 PM andypugh_: Well, if it wasnât for this machining project I would be fixing LinuxCNCâŚ.
05:24 PM andypugh_: (Though thatâs on the guilt-list not the fun-list really)
05:26 PM Tom_L: 102°F here which is close enough to the predicted 105 for me
05:27 PM CaptHindsight: I stopped all favors. I jumped through a bunch of hoops to formulate a custom resin for a small high tech firm. They treated me like I lied about it all, since of course they would never do anyone a favor. It just did not compute with them.
05:28 PM JT-Shop_: 88°F here
05:28 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:29 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, you get my 2 notes?
05:29 PM JT-Shop: just woke up so no
05:29 PM Tom_L: 2 pr
05:29 PM Tom_L: one per git
05:29 PM JT-Shop: ok
05:44 PM JT-Shop: andypugh_, my policy is if you want to do the work I'll show how for nothing, if you want me to make you something then it's shop rate
05:46 PM andypugh_: These scews were different, in that I had already made them for fun. The mistake was being talked into making some variants.
05:49 PM JT-Shop: my neighbor once brought me a bearing housing for a riding lawn mower and wanted to know if I could make one out of steel as he was tired of replacing the cast aluminum ones for $45
05:49 PM JT-Shop: I said sure but it will cost $900
05:50 PM JT-Shop: he had no clue how much time a one off like that would take
05:51 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> hey andy is here....... hey andy
05:53 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, they are alot cheaper if they are for in house use
05:54 PM lcnc-relay: <andypugh#0> No I am not, I am there đ
05:54 PM JT-Shop: lol
05:57 PM Tom_L: kid took the job i think
05:57 PM Tom_L: he turned down their first offer
06:05 PM rdtsc: Andy, there's a few little things I'm gonna need, like a 6mm touch probe adapter to 1/2". Dreading asking anyone for help, because I understand how time-intensive one-offs are. So no, I'll try to make it myself first. :)
06:06 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> well, lows 90's here today. going up through the weekend. forecast low 100's next week.......
06:06 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> captainhindsight_. if you want to see how polite canadians are, just ask what they think about americans
06:09 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Southpark show always has good satire on Canadians...
06:15 PM roycroft: all canadians are polite, except for scott - he's a dick
06:22 PM andypugh_: Oh, apropos of nothing, Live Stable Diffusion: https://photos.app.goo.gl/HMhF5HemgPHxFkJM7
06:49 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as unterhausen
07:09 PM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc> Lol the western Canadians aren't far off trump style people
07:11 PM xxcoder: andy interesting
07:20 PM roycroft: well, the ones in the prairies
07:20 PM roycroft: folks in bc are completely different to the rest of western canada
07:21 PM * roycroft recalls that joe clark was from alberta or saskatchewan
07:21 PM roycroft: yeah, he was albertan
07:30 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> yeah the fl;yover provinces
07:30 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> lmao andy, are you into genshin impact?

07:38 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcodery> "follow this plans exactly" LOL
09:08 PM Jym: Someone (a Long time ago) was really into video cameras, DVR's, NVR's, etc), does anyone recall who that was by chance?
09:14 PM Tom_L: not me
09:23 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
10:02 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader#0> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/lwWIvXivIMqXJPtTJTGpmiNC/20240618_211207.jpg
10:04 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader#0> Oops. Wrong channel.
10:04 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcodery> looks star warsish
10:05 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader#0> It is
10:06 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader#0> Meant to send that to a woodworking channel. But the back was done on CNC that uses LinuxCNC so not totally off-topic, lol. It is a challenge coin rack for the coins I collect.
10:07 PM xxcoder: lol we often go off topic here, though try not to cut into actual on topic
10:09 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader#0> I am a member of the 501st, which is a Star Wars costuming group that we do for charity work. Challenge coins are very popular to trade. This is my second rack I have made for my coins. The first one is full now, lol.
10:09 PM xxcoder: :D
10:13 PM roycroft: some of us here are woodworkers
10:13 PM roycroft: it's not unknown to discuss woodworking here
10:14 PM roycroft: you don't perchance have any chickens as well, do you?
10:14 PM xxcoder: once a while it almosy seems chickens is required for membership in here lol
10:15 PM xxcoder: but really I think only couple here has chickens
10:15 PM Tom_L: or goats?
10:15 PM xxcoder: jt is most well known chicken keeper
10:15 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader#0> No chickens here
10:15 PM roycroft: ewoks?
10:16 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader#0> Nah, they like to eat people.
10:16 PM * roycroft has hiked through the forest where the ewoks *vrooming* around scenes were filmed
10:17 PM lcnc-relay: <mikemader#0> Nice!
10:18 PM xxcoder: thats cool
10:22 PM roycroft: i did not get eaten

10:58 PM Jym: I have to flash doom seperately for right now.
10:58 PM Jym: Someone is working on being able to load it via a bootloader
10:59 PM xxcoder: weirdest thing I ever saw someone put doom on is rabbit r1 devices server
10:59 PM xxcoder: it was that badly insecure
10:59 PM Jym: haha
11:00 PM Jym: The CP (CardPuter) is pretty cool, only $30
11:00 PM xxcoder: wouldnt know what to do with it lol. cant even play doom, id get dizzier and sick
11:00 PM xxcoder: couldnt watch most of that video
11:01 PM Jym: It's really a ESP32-S3, with battery, mic, speaker, micdoSD slot, USB-C, RGB LED, display, keyboard, and of course wifi and bluetooth
11:02 PM Jym: Oh and a groove port with Vcc, GND, and two IO pins
11:02 PM Jym: and a IR transmitter
11:03 PM xxcoder: time to turn it into tv blaster lol
11:03 PM Jym: Yep, it already hads that
11:03 PM Jym: works really good for AC's
11:03 PM xxcoder: lol
