#linuxcnc Calendar

01:22 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:54 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:52 AM Deejay: moin
05:53 AM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> Morning
07:20 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, you finish the gui for the bp yet?
09:06 AM JT-Cave: no, still trying to get the number pad to popup from a mouse event in a line edit
09:06 AM lcnc-relay: <perry_j1987> morning
09:43 AM CaptHindsight: stopped by a makerspace yesterday and a CNC wood router was running LCNC 2.5 on Ubuntu with RTAI, the BIOS settings must have been off since the latency numbers shot to 250K with just mouse movements
09:49 AM JT-Cave: yippee I got it fingered out
10:03 AM lcnc-relay: <perry_j1987> going to be picking up a couple flat file cabinets today
10:03 AM lcnc-relay: <perry_j1987> measured them up and they will fit side by side on a shelf of this pallet rack workbench i made
10:14 AM * JT-Shop wonders if there is a limit to how many numbers you can block on a s10?
10:26 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> aren't blocked numbers usually done by the carrier ?
10:27 AM JT-Shop: I have no idea... and my new better cassette is scheduled to arrive tomorrow
10:27 AM JT-Shop: 16 miles 90 minutes today
10:28 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> speed and time don't really matter.... it's all how ya feel, both during and after the ride.
10:29 AM JT-Shop: well distance is a measure of my strength because I only ride 90 minutes
10:30 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> that's ok.
10:30 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I used to ride 20 miles after a long day at work (a desk job) and feel fine.
10:30 AM JT-Shop: 815' elevation change where I ride
10:31 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> now, when I ride 20 miles (retired....) i come home for a nap....
10:32 AM JT-Shop: I've been leaving after letting the chickens out to beat the heat, so no nap until after lunch
10:33 AM roycroft: i can't ride my bike until my wrist has healed more, which kind of sucks, because this new town i moved to is an offroad biking mecca
10:34 AM roycroft: i did just move my exercise bike here last weekend, and i can work out with that while my wrist is healing, but that's not as much fun as hitting the trails
10:34 AM JT-Shop: us forest trails?
10:34 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: definitely take it easy on the wrist..... a simple fall could do serious damage
10:34 AM roycroft: yes
10:34 AM roycroft: i'm not even worried about falls at this point
10:34 AM roycroft: i can't put the pressure on my wrist that riding a bike requires
10:35 AM roycroft: and if i decide to ride one-handed, then i would worry about falls
10:35 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> don't risk it....not worth it
10:35 AM roycroft: i won't
10:35 AM JT-Shop: I usually have 5 points of contact with a bike
10:36 AM roycroft: i'm tired of being injured, and am doing whatever i can to avoid prolonging recovery
10:36 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I don't worry too much about falling, I worry about the fracking cars roaring by.
10:36 AM roycroft: that said, i'm still moving, and it's kind of hard to not use the wrist at all during that process, but i'm taking it really easy
10:36 AM JT-Shop: the road bike is a bit squirrely with just 3
10:37 AM roycroft: i just ordered these:
10:37 AM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C1Z42NV9/
10:37 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Cal has a road law. 3 feet is required between car and bike. but most drivers are ignorant idiots
10:37 AM JT-Shop: I "think" the road bike would be more stable with a longer frame
10:37 AM roycroft: i hope they work out well
10:37 AM roycroft: i've needed ramps for my pickup ever since i bought it
10:38 AM roycroft: the problem is that the bed sits really high, so i need long ramps
10:38 AM roycroft: most are shorter than those, but i could use even longer ones
10:38 AM roycroft: i can't find any longer ones though
10:38 AM JT-Shop: laws don't stop dumb ass drivers from hitting you
10:39 AM roycroft: that's why i'm so happy we have off-road biking trails here
10:39 AM roycroft: although laws also don't stop dumb ass bikers from hitting you
10:39 AM JT-Shop: we have 20+ miles of trails here but they need a lot of work
10:40 AM roycroft: my bike is not an off road bike, but if i put knobby tires on it it would do ok on trails
10:40 AM roycroft: i think
10:40 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Shop: yeah, been there...... twice...... had a car turn right on me. the last one was a big old suburban so it was like a wall pushing me sides around the corner....
10:41 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> when the right turn is done, the car keeps going and ya fall down hard.....
10:41 AM roycroft: i raced competetively back in the '70s
10:42 AM JT-Shop: I don't ride on the road but I'm still super cautious when vehicles are near
10:42 AM roycroft: i used to train daily, and had a lot of experience with sharing the road with big, heavy vehicles whose operators did not belive in sharing
10:42 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT. stay that way.
10:44 AM JT-Shop: this morning I had 2 cars turning in and one coming out of a driveway I was about to cross, they all stopped and so did I and I waved them to carry on
10:45 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> if a car stops or slow for me, I always give a little thank you wave....
10:46 AM JT-Shop: same here
10:46 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> the good karma pay off, i hope
10:54 AM roycroft: yes
10:54 AM roycroft: but karma with caution, always
12:04 PM JT-Cave: hmm it's nap time here now that I have a touch screen number pad for flex
12:08 PM Tom_L: lunch then nap
12:47 PM jwash: hi everyone, will linuxcnc run on this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/363358803799
12:48 PM Tom_L: doubtful
01:08 PM JT-Shop: no
01:08 PM jwash: v confusing, what's the cheapest board for 4 axis linuxcnc operation, in your guys' opinions
01:08 PM jwash: i have an older computer with a parallel port ready to use
01:08 PM Unterhaus__ is now known as Unterhausen
01:09 PM JT-Shop: any breakout board (BOB) that uses the parallel port should work
01:09 PM Unterhausen: bearing on our front loading washer went out. The old one is rusted in. Lovely
01:09 PM JT-Shop: USB is not real time
01:11 PM Unterhausen: I find some suitable parallel port breakout boards on ebay for as little as $11
01:12 PM jwash: like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/152833919438
01:12 PM Unterhausen: I found someone that used an arduino cnc shield (no arduino) for lcnc
01:13 PM jwash: i posess an arduino uno with a cnc shield too
01:14 PM Unterhausen: probably best to use a parport breakout board to interface to it. And throw away the arduino
01:15 PM Unterhausen: that's what this person did https://forum.v1e.com/t/inexpensive-linuxcnc-interface-for-mpcnc/9718
01:32 PM xxcoder: nice
01:47 PM pere: <URL: https://invidious.fdn.fr/watch?v=JF8F7uaGfV8 > :)
02:33 PM JT-BP: Note: Using POSIX realtime
02:33 PM JT-BP: hm2/hm2_5i25.0: invalid cookie, got 0xFFFFFFFF, expected 0x55AACAFE
02:33 PM JT-BP: hm2/hm2_5i25.0: FPGA failed to initialize, or unexpected firmware?
02:33 PM JT-BP: hm2_5i25.0: board fails HM2 registration
02:34 PM JT-BP: pcw-home, what does that mean?
02:35 PM pcw-home: Usually that indicates a PCI address issue (most often dirty contacts or a bad PCI slot)
02:37 PM JT-Shop: ok
02:49 PM roycroft: grr
02:50 PM roycroft: i got three of my fastener cabinets installed today but when i went to do the fourth one, it won't fit - there is a wall stud that protrudes about 5mm that won't let me flush it with the others
02:51 PM roycroft: and of course, the ones already installed are the very heavy ones with the most drawers, so they would be very difficult to move
02:51 PM xxcoder: no way to plane that down?
02:51 PM roycroft: and my electric planer is in eugene
02:51 PM roycroft: i'll probably have to go at it with a big chisel
02:52 PM CaptHindsight: https://rockfordballscrew.com/ another US co that has turned to crap :(
02:52 PM xxcoder: what happened?
02:53 PM CaptHindsight: no replies to requests, always in sales meetings or some other excuse
02:53 PM JT-Shop: well crap the pc won't boot up now...
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: how to tell me you don't want my money
02:54 PM xxcoder: sounds like they got to mode where company have meetings to plan meetings
02:56 PM CaptHindsight: I started calling just for fun and now they don't even answer the phone
02:56 PM JT-Shop: damn pc just keeps restarting...
03:04 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, there's hope... i went from bad to worse to working yesterday
03:04 PM Tom_L: pull the cards out and put them back one at a time
03:04 PM Tom_L: i have an M2 ssd that does that if i try to use it
03:05 PM Tom_L: or just freezes the bios
03:05 PM Tom_L: also is the bios battery dead?
03:07 PM Tom_L: i keep some of those in my desk drawer
03:07 PM Tom_L: 2032
03:07 PM Tom_L: usually
03:10 PM Tom_L: that and i had a bad nic card
03:38 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> oh, man. Donald Southerland has left the house.....
03:40 PM xxcoder: we need to lock the door better. that sucks though
03:40 PM Tom_L: those that leave seem to be getting younger..
03:41 PM roycroft: bummer
03:41 PM Tom_L: i'm in age denial...
03:51 PM CaptHindsight: 1980's, 1990's, and 2000's are all 10 years ago
03:51 PM xxcoder: its always 10 years ago forever
03:54 PM Loetmichel: Tom_L: the fitting german saying: "Die Einschläge kommen näher" (The [grenade/artillery] impacts get closer) ... i see you and raise a dead sister (4 years younger) and a dead Mother in law (20 years older) in the last six months. And a elementary school classmate not even 3 years ago.
03:55 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: yeah, things like Germans winning the World Cup. "Wasnt that just last year?"
03:55 PM Loetmichel: :)
04:03 PM Tom_L: damn pc wanted to boot from the dynamic kernel again!
04:06 PM Tom_L: even after picking it as the default boot in grub customizer
04:12 PM Tom_L: GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT was false...
04:13 PM JT-Shop: use the grub customizer
04:14 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:33 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, i did
04:33 PM Tom_L: finally got that part worked out
04:34 PM Tom_L: copying all the test configs over and setting up icons
04:42 PM JT-Shop: I think the power supply is toast and it's a weird one
04:43 PM Tom_L: you know, you're runnin out of numbers before 1.0.0 right?
04:43 PM JT-Shop: yup
04:47 PM roycroft: bah there are infinte numbers >0.0.0 and <1.0.0
04:48 PM Tom_L: and flexgui starts on the new test pc
04:48 PM Tom_L: yay
04:48 PM Tom_L: with the mill config
04:49 PM * roycroft had a thought that his electric planer may be here after all, but in the storage unit
04:49 PM * roycroft was correct, and is so glad he was able to procure a local storage unit
04:49 PM Tom_L: get a container
04:49 PM roycroft: i did
04:49 PM roycroft: but i rented it
04:50 PM Tom_L: my niece works at a place that sells those but i don't know if they deliver to Or
04:50 PM roycroft: the city makes it difficult and expensive to put on on my property
04:50 PM Tom_L: mostly E coast i think
04:50 PM roycroft: i can get a 20' container delivered for $3k
04:50 PM roycroft: plus all the city stuff
04:50 PM Tom_L: cheaper than building something that size
04:50 PM roycroft: i am renting one for $80/month
04:51 PM roycroft: and i'm thinking that if i rent it for 2 years (giving me plenty of time to build the new shop) i'm money ahead vs. buying one
04:51 PM Tom_L: could be
04:51 PM roycroft: selling it up here might prove challenging, and i might end up having to pay to have it removed
04:52 PM xxcoder: well can always turn it into long term storage
04:52 PM Tom_L: renting might be worth it just for that
04:52 PM xxcoder: indeed
04:53 PM roycroft: but the real hassle is the cost of the building permit, the cost of the inspection, the cost of the excavation permit, the cost of the foundation for it
04:53 PM Tom_L: or contact a container retailer to get it off your land
04:53 PM roycroft: and i'm limited as to how much of my property i can build on
04:53 PM roycroft: if i got a container that would reduce the size of the addtion to my shop
04:54 PM roycroft: and i doubt this city would buy my saying "let me build the shop, and as soon as it's done i'll remove the container"
04:54 PM Tom_L: underground :)
04:54 PM * roycroft is blocks from a river
04:54 PM roycroft: not in the flood plain, thankfully - just outside it
04:54 PM Tom_L: that could pose a problem
04:54 PM roycroft: but my soil is all river run
04:54 PM roycroft: meaning lots of big rocks and dense clay
04:55 PM roycroft: digging is no fun
04:55 PM Tom_L: pan for gold
04:55 PM roycroft: i was half a block from a large creek at the old house, and had the same problem
04:55 PM xxcoder: reminds me of that guy who have hobby of evacing basement using toys rc
04:55 PM xxcoder: literally years
04:55 PM roycroft: the british guy?
04:55 PM xxcoder: not sure been years since last saw it
04:55 PM roycroft: and you'd not have been able to tell by the accent
04:56 PM roycroft: you would have to rely on the weird words and weird mannerisms
04:56 PM xxcoder: and plugs
04:56 PM xxcoder: thats common way for me to figure where lol
05:09 PM roycroft: me heads out to ensure that the rogue stud conforms to its alloted space
05:14 PM CaptHindsight: why would someone just use oversized balls on a worn screw if the wear is much greater in one area of the screw than the other?
05:15 PM Tom_L: add some grit to size them in
05:15 PM CaptHindsight: the ball screw nuts are not a magic ball size adapters
05:15 PM Tom_L: like lapping valves...
05:15 PM Tom_L: lapping compound
05:15 PM Tom_L: it will all fit eventually
05:16 PM CaptHindsight: the first 6-8 inches of a 7 ft screw are 0.004" over the rest of the screw
05:16 PM Tom_L: CNCs typically run the same sets of parts over and over... that's where the wear is
05:16 PM * CaptHindsight laps Tom_L with a wet noodle
05:16 PM CaptHindsight: duh
05:16 PM Tom_L: :)
05:17 PM CaptHindsight: yeah we know what's wrong and why
05:17 PM CaptHindsight: it's just dumb offers to fix
05:17 PM CaptHindsight: "we will clean and replace the balls for $1400"
05:17 PM Tom_L: and guarantee accuracy?
05:17 PM CaptHindsight: yeah the easy part
05:18 PM CaptHindsight: I don't know who to give money to for work anymore
05:18 PM CaptHindsight: they all seem to be hustlers or incompetent
05:24 PM Tom_L: all my 'go to' contacts are dying off
05:24 PM CaptHindsight: similar
05:24 PM Tom_L: and the snot nosed kids that replace them are dumb as rocks
05:24 PM CaptHindsight: yup
05:27 PM CaptHindsight: hah https://hiwin.com/products/in-stock-ballscrews/ backlash Max. 0.04mm thats worse than the worn screw!
05:40 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L : I can't even find people that understand the specs anymore
05:51 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:14 PM Tom_L: specs? .... lemme get my specs so i can read the specs
06:14 PM xxcoder: probably in your head ;)
06:14 PM xxcoder: *on
06:17 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:18 PM JT-Shop: linuxcnc installs so much crap just to support all the gui's that most people don't use what a waste of time
06:19 PM xxcoder: probably want "ready to go" packages that contain only stuff for one specific gui
06:19 PM JT-Shop: when you install debian it doesn't install every desktop, you get to pick
06:21 PM Tom_L: i'm with you on that
06:21 PM Tom_L: would be nice if the installer let you pick
06:22 PM JT-Shop: I would love to figure out how to just install linuxcnc without any gui's
06:22 PM Tom_L: a noob wouldn't know what to pick though
06:23 PM Tom_L: a stripped down linuxcnc would probably fit on a 3.5" floppy
06:23 PM JT-Shop: include Axis as it's in native tcl and python
06:24 PM JT-Shop: I don't think it brings in much
06:24 PM Tom_L: you remember those right????
06:24 PM Tom_L: :)
06:24 PM Tom_L: the docs are the biggest kiler
06:24 PM Tom_L: killer
06:24 PM Tom_L: especially if you're building from source
06:25 PM Tom_L: well i think the test pc is all set up
06:44 PM JT-Shop: you can turn off building the docs
06:44 PM JT-Shop: on a fresh debian flex only brings in 20 libs
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcodery> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/NBMHhCUFSRROWDymiIgOmsOr/image.png
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcodery> was posted at project millenium machines. lol
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcodery> translation error I guess
07:22 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
07:27 PM rdtsc: @roycroft save your energy - if putting in lights, put in some good ones once, rather than two sets twice.
07:28 PM rdtsc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da4hXBju0m4
07:30 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> " I thought Adam Savage was bad with his OCD but you sir, are the unquestioned KING of OCD on youtube! "
07:32 PM xxcoder: 3d printer used in video
07:32 PM xxcoder: it hows why 3d printer is must have in shops now. easy to make stuff
07:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/HggodpeeSHFTJLyrEHitBkqS/PXL_20240621_001852656.jpg
07:33 PM xxcoder: guy has xl. nic
07:34 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/COnuThdnwtrwhhgwYwiTxkkB/PXL_20240621_002022778.jpg
07:35 PM xxcoder: flicker-free lighting system. nice
07:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> still have to see if the outlets work...
07:38 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> captainhindsight_. yes - clough42 is a bit on the spectrum
07:39 PM xxcoder: I like the final solution at end. very good
07:41 PM xxcoder: progress on protecting pipes I see
07:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> 3 more to go...
07:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol - I picked up a full heaping load of that rock - bounced the bucket and the rear wheels came off of the ground.. The Kubota isn't a heavy tractor...
07:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> So - I shook the bucket to level it out - made it up the hill
08:14 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, glad that worked out for ya
08:15 PM Tom_L: you might leave the grade lower inside the box as water _will_ get in
08:15 PM roycroft: the other parts cabinet is in place, i've put the machines all back in the shop, and there's even a little room to walk around now
08:15 PM roycroft: when i get rid of the other bench there will be even more room
08:16 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, then it won't go down the tube rather just soak in the ground
08:18 PM Tom_L: the lid design looks better on those than the one i have
08:18 PM Tom_L: the one i have, the lid is recessed into the frame
08:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Tom_L: I am not worried.. the rock is above grade
08:22 PM Tom_L: yeah
08:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> The box is maybe an inch or 2 below ground
08:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> At the most
08:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> i cant really go much deeper as the tubes kina curve off under grounnd
08:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> The rock is really just to keep it there.
08:29 PM Tom_L: https://www.walterswholesale.com/oldcastle-frp173018f-blnk-fiberglass-reinforced-polymer-15-tier-flared-wall-medium-duty-box-assembly-17-inch-x-30-inch-x-18-inch?queryID=7c4a4143d85accd970457c1939d6ad5c
08:29 PM Tom_L: looks as good as a purpose made box
08:29 PM Tom_L: and probably costs alot less
08:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> wonder about shipping though lol
08:31 PM Tom_L: i think what you have is great
08:31 PM Tom_L: just looked those up for comparison
08:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> time will tell - winters are hard on things.
08:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> but - I really only need the water pipe - and I can seal them..
08:43 PM xxcoder: hopefully its also uv resistant
10:14 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
11:53 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
