#linuxcnc Calendar

01:14 AM Deejay: moin
01:39 AM lcnc-relay: <gamer9house> Morning all šŸ˜Š
01:39 AM lcnc-relay: Do I need to have an IO module when I am using a raspberry pi ? My thinking is I can just use the pi io ports.
01:39 AM lcnc-relay: <gamer9house> Or is it not sufficient?
01:41 AM xxcoder: hey
01:41 AM lcnc-relay: <gamer9house> Iā€™m building an ethercat based linuxcnc, and using leadshine el7. Each drive I see has its io
01:47 AM jpa-: usually you'd want something that is more electrically robust than the pi io ports
01:48 AM jpa-: but you could make your own level translator or isolator PCB if you want
02:07 AM lcnc-relay: <gamer9house> Ok I understand now, thank you
02:10 AM xxcoder: I guess since its pretty easy to backfeed and fry pi that way
02:21 AM jpa-: yeah, and getting voltage spikes on IO lines is not rare when you have high power motors nearby
02:27 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> Hello
02:27 AM lcnc-relay: quick question, how do you handle IDC connector in industrial environment ?
02:27 AM lcnc-relay: I have a 7i73 with IDC male pin. If I want to connect few wires, I need to put a IDC DIN PCB/Breakout board and female /female connector. Do you have better option?
02:37 AM jpa-: that sounds like a good option
03:03 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> i don't see other one right now
03:03 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> i'm not fan of small femalle pin that you put directly onto male connector pin
04:15 AM Tom_L: morning
05:06 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:16 AM JT-Cave: morning
09:04 AM robotustra: what is your thoughts about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=060w83EjeGw
09:05 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> morning
09:31 AM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc2
10:15 AM CloudEvil_ is now known as CloudEvil
11:06 AM Rab_: robotustra, first thought: is Rossmann wearing eyeliner??
11:07 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol.. He probably just doesn't sleep
11:08 AM Rab_: Yeah, second thought was I hope his Austin bro crew (Rogan, probably?) hasn't gotten him into burning through his lifeforce with performance-enhancing drugs.
11:08 AM Rab_: Only 1/4 of the way through the video, so that's it for the moment. ;)
11:09 AM Tom_L: you're actually watching it?
11:09 AM Tom_L: :)
11:10 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I like Louis Rossmann - he seems like a good guy.
11:10 AM Rab_: Listening, while "gathering priceless domain knowledge" on the PM forum
11:10 AM Tom_L: wouldn't do me any good atm anyway. after moving stuff i got no sound on this pc now
11:10 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> oops..
11:10 AM Rab_: I don't especially like Rossmann, but I do think he's all right.
11:12 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> He is usually a 'Tell it like it is' kind of guy
11:12 AM Rab_: Having said that, I thought the hype around FUTO was somewhat disingenuous and full of euphemisms for whatever they were actually trying to do. And this seems an awful lot like a pitch for something he wants to do, maybe not something I want to do.
11:13 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> He has done a lot for 'right to repair'
11:14 AM Rab_: Big "you'd pay for a computer, why wouldn't you pay for software??" energy. It's a trivial point, no novelty at all.
11:14 AM Rab_: Yeah, I agree and I think that's really admirable (and probably critical).
11:17 AM Rab_: Volunteerism is critical to the open source process, business models are fine (and paid developers are totally fine) but I don't want to see that ideal get crowded out at all.
11:17 AM Rab_: IMHO
11:20 AM Rab_: I feel like I only have vague criticisms of the video because it is also rather vague. I suspect it is about some specific matter that wasn't discussed.
11:22 AM Tom_L: which volunteers do you pay? and to what organization to divi out the funds?
11:25 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> exactly, Tom_L, my thoughts precisely
11:25 AM Tom_L: i feel i'm worth more than you...do i get paid more?
11:26 AM Tom_L: as you probably feel similar
11:26 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> well, you are worth more than me...
11:26 AM Tom_L: not the point and not true since you don't even know me
11:27 AM Tom_L: i could just be a well tuned AI
11:29 AM Tom_L: kinda clouds the volunteerism of it
11:34 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> Gives the government another way to tax the little guy...
11:35 AM Tom_L: just hide behind a non profit
11:36 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> Profit with a non-profit?
11:43 AM rdtsc2: The 1% feel they're worth 50% of the capital... yet somehow that actually flies.
11:46 AM CaptHindsight: https://sls4all.com/hardware/ Fusion 360 3D model :(
11:47 AM CaptHindsight: why choose F360 over STEP or IGES ?
11:48 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> F360 is a program. STEP and IGES are formats
11:49 AM CaptHindsight: yup, F360 files vs
11:49 AM CaptHindsight: I know why you wouldn't bother sharing Freecad files
12:00 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> the program based files have all the creation stuff in 'em.........sketches, extrusions, cuts, .....etc
12:09 PM xxcoder: CaptHindsight: cant fusion export step?
12:11 PM CaptHindsight: xxcoder: yeah, they said they were going to release Step files but now it's just native F360
12:11 PM xxcoder: ok. yeah I got the email and prices is just high lol
12:11 PM xxcoder: 7k euro
12:12 PM rdtsc2: F360 used to be nice for makers, but they keep changing the license.
12:12 PM CaptHindsight: there is another SLS project on poopstarter
12:12 PM CaptHindsight: launching soon
12:12 PM xxcoder: they did a rug pulls few times so I will not use f360
12:12 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/micronics3d/micron-a-desktop-sls-3d-printer
12:13 PM xxcoder: yeah already saved and waiting. mostly just to see final prices and such lol
12:13 PM CaptHindsight: chat later about it, <out the door>
12:37 PM CloudEvil: Two billion dollars a print.
12:38 PM xxcoder: lol if home shop sls was that expensive, id rather just buy commerical one
01:20 PM Tom_L: sls4all wanted a login to see anything.... no thanks
01:24 PM xxcoder: huh
01:24 PM xxcoder: I could browse without login
02:31 PM lcnc-relay: <vibram> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/PGSzxbXGwIBkBTdTYtZsgFOn/IMG_20240610_212258.jpg
02:31 PM lcnc-relay: <vibram> I tried to troubleshoot my pins as my encoder was not working and now I have this red led always on. And nothing is working the card seems offline
02:32 PM lcnc-relay: <vibram> I tried to reboot etc but still the same. Did I killed the card?
02:33 PM lcnc-relay: <vibram> I was only touching few i/o from P2 with my multimeter
02:35 PM lcnc-relay: <vibram> Before playing with the probe the encoder was not working but at least I had no red LED
02:40 PM lcnc-relay: <vibram> I read this topic https://www.forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/33503-7i76e-and-7i73?start=10
02:40 PM lcnc-relay: But what worries me is I didn't have the issue before when a I had nothing wired.
02:40 PM lcnc-relay: Then I wired my encoder, no error message but encoder not working, then I played with multimeter probe and got this issue. Everything is in 5v.
03:14 PM Unterhaus__ is now known as unterhausen
03:20 PM JT-Shop: 7i73 the red FAULT LED (CR1) indicates a communications watchdog fault.
03:21 PM JT-Shop: page 9 in the manual
04:58 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:53 PM CaptHindsight: OK back from 4 hours in traffic
05:54 PM xxcoder: bleh
05:54 PM xxcoder: traffics suck
06:01 PM CaptHindsight: minivans are the scourge of rush hour
06:03 PM CaptHindsight: around here it's just too much to expect people to go when the lights turn green and to at least do around the posted speed limit, it seems like it's either 15+ over or -10 under
06:03 PM CaptHindsight: everyone can't have ADHD
06:19 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> they're stupid
06:19 PM Tom_L: there are those that are put on earth to make the rest of us look like genius
06:20 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> cannon fodder
06:22 PM Tom_L: amd they let them procreate
06:22 PM rdtsc: The Mesa 7C80 has a potentiometer spindle output. Anyone know what kind of resolution that has? Compared to a PWM output? I ask because some digital pots have few discrete steps, like 256. If PWM has higher resolution, I'd rather go that route.
06:26 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.mesanet.com/pdf/parallel/7c80man.pdf
06:26 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:28 PM Tom_L: if it's like the other boards it has a 10v swing
06:30 PM CaptHindsight: . The voltage supplied between SPINDLE+ and SPINDLE- must be
06:30 PM CaptHindsight: between 5VDC an 15VDC with SPINDLE + always being more positive than SPINDLE-.
06:30 PM CaptHindsight: Because the analog output is isolated, bipolar output is possible, for example with
06:30 PM CaptHindsight: SPINDLE+ connected to 5V and SPINDLE- connected to -5V, a +-5V analog output range
06:30 PM CaptHindsight: is created. In this case the spindle output must be offset so that 50% of full scale is output
06:30 PM CaptHindsight: when a 0V output is required.
06:31 PM Tom_L: sounds like it's like the rest of them
06:31 PM CaptHindsight: BUT it doesn't mention resolution ( I only skimmed the data sheet)
06:31 PM Tom_L: yeah i'm not sure about that either
06:31 PM rdtsc: Interesting, there's just a 4000 CMOS logic and a BTS5230GS dual smart MOSFET near the spindle connector. Wonder how Peter is turning spindle speed into a variable resistance - switching those two MOSFETS really fast?
06:32 PM Tom_L: ask him
06:34 PM Tom_L: i'm using one on my vfd input
06:36 PM rdtsc: I guess that is I.P. anyways, was just curious. At the stage where I'm designing the spindle drive input. Kinda wanted to use PWM; think the card has one PWM channel but haven't tested it yet... guess i should get on that
06:37 PM rdtsc: How is FlexGUI going?
06:38 PM Tom_L: i think he's taking a break. everything implemented so far has been tested afik
06:38 PM Tom_L: the big hurdle is the plotter
06:39 PM rdtsc: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. :
06:39 PM Tom_L: http://www.mesanet.com/pdf/motion/7i47sman.pdf
06:39 PM Tom_L: i think all those spindle controls are the same or at least function the same
06:40 PM Tom_L: search: spindle
06:41 PM CaptHindsight: rdtsc: and usually not in one sitting
06:43 PM Tom_L: volunteers accepted
06:43 PM CaptHindsight: I'm trying to limit my red meat intake
06:44 PM CaptHindsight: elephant, the other red meat?
06:44 PM xxcoder: what about green ham and eggs
06:44 PM CaptHindsight: oh i could not would not
06:44 PM xxcoder: lol
06:44 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/24_trip/green_eggs2.jpg
06:44 PM Tom_L: i did
06:45 PM xxcoder: interesting. too bad ham isnt green lol
06:45 PM rdtsc: wow lol
06:45 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/24_trip/green_eggs1.jpg
06:45 PM CaptHindsight: green eggs and spam
06:45 PM Tom_L: as were the pancakes
06:46 PM Tom_L: dr seuss kids event
06:46 PM xxcoder: :)
06:46 PM CaptHindsight: fun stuff!
06:46 PM CaptHindsight: i could not would not with a goat
06:46 PM Tom_L: we took the 2 nieces with us last trip
07:04 PM roycroft: today is hopefully a major improvement to the new home day - i am about to install my dishwasher
07:04 PM * roycroft hopes that goes smoothly - it should be a 20 minute job
07:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> should be..
07:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (my name is sam... Do you know how many time green eggs and ham came up? šŸ˜‰
07:25 PM CaptHindsight: Sam I yam?
07:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> exactly
07:26 PM CaptHindsight: well i had a rhymey name as well, kids are merciless
07:27 PM CaptHindsight: Harbor Freight gets my wrath when i check out
07:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/oTPYYHXWkGRjhGVpCNfNQhPG/448225461_7534252320003548_614680589482958880_n.mp4
07:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> trying to decide if I want to take the youngest to see if we can make it 5 miles to the gas station
07:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> the insurence guy says I am ok..
07:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> he was like - why?
07:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I had no real answer
07:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> it raddles the tin at idle
07:39 PM rdtsc: If it were to have an issue at 2.5mi, is there some way to get it home?
07:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I would call a towing company..
07:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> No - I don't have a way to get it home
07:41 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> the actual 2003 ford is in worse shape
07:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> brake and parking brake seemes to work.. so that is 90 %
07:45 PM rdtsc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EqhrBWvmOE Matt's always moving something heavy. To only have half of the toys he has...
07:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I watch him every weekend.
07:58 PM lcnc-relay: <ranga> Matt is one of those "inexplicably has money, which means that's a lifestyle I can never have... but at least you don't produce rich dude content" youtubers
07:59 PM xxcoder: looks like pretty lot of those was scrap
07:59 PM xxcoder: while theres new ones too
07:59 PM lcnc-relay: <ranga> he just spent US$600k or something building a workshop on an already large farm, and is about to start building a house on same said land
08:07 PM xxcoder: thats a lot of money yeah
09:34 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I think he figured out how to buy cheap - sell high
09:34 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/fILjCUYwgYNnRFePQVPQyXQq/PXL_20240611_011528887.jpg
09:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Made the 10 mile round trip to the gas station
09:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Can mostly double clutch. Kids say it is loud
09:38 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Definitely turns heads lol
09:41 PM xxcoder: its rare to see anything that old, even around here
09:50 PM roycroft: i has working dishwasher!
09:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Yay!
09:50 PM roycroft: that's my big news/accomplishment of the day
09:50 PM roycroft: driving the old truck around would be way more fun
09:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Some random guy asked what year it was.. lots of guys in pick up trucks giving me thumbs ups..
09:51 PM roycroft: cute kids, btw, and they seem to appreciate the vehicle
09:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> They were 'high' after the trip.. it was great
09:52 PM roycroft: yeah, sounds like a really fun outing
10:00 PM xxcoder: nice'
10:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> It does do 40+ but that is about it .
10:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Engine ran really good.. knock on wood
10:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Started right back up after fueling
10:07 PM xxcoder: probably purged some 50 year old gas
10:08 PM xxcoder: probably want to get water out by addons
10:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I think the first trip will be electric motors I will never use..
10:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Just looking in the basement I counted 20..
10:33 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: pics or it didn't happen :)
10:34 PM * roycroft is running the first load of dishes in the new house now
10:35 PM CaptHindsight: skunkworks8841: nice beast
10:35 PM roycroft: i have the truck with the lift gate reserved for this weekend
10:35 PM roycroft: so machines will be moving!
10:36 PM roycroft: there is no power to the new shop yet
10:36 PM roycroft: nor insulation, and it still needs a new roof
10:37 PM roycroft: but all that can happen later
10:39 PM CaptHindsight: dry enough to store things in?
10:39 PM roycroft: yes
10:39 PM roycroft: and probably good for another 5 years
10:40 PM CaptHindsight: getting down to 46F here tonight (8C)
11:01 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
