01:00 AM sensille: can i block on signal changes with the python HAL module?
01:14 AM CaptHindsight: sensille: can you write your own pythin hal midule?
01:14 AM CaptHindsight: heh typos
01:15 AM CaptHindsight: can you write your own python hal module?
01:15 AM CaptHindsight: https://linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/config/python-hal-interface.html
01:16 AM CaptHindsight: https://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/hal/halmodule.html
01:17 AM sensille: CaptHindsight: yeah, that's exactly what i did. took only a few minutes, cool stuff
01:17 AM sensille: only downside is that it has to poll
01:17 AM CaptHindsight: \0/
01:18 AM sensille: controlling the shelly plug is also just a single (documented) http request
01:36 AM sensille: and the plug also tells me that the vacuum consumes 1162W of power
04:53 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:24 AM Deejay: moin
06:02 AM Tom_L: morning
06:08 AM Tom_L: looks like you're getting wet
06:09 AM JT-Cave: yup
06:11 AM Tom_L: moved the office to the basement yesterday... she needed some room
06:12 AM JT-Cave: fun
06:12 AM Tom_L: not my kind
06:12 AM Tom_L: at least everything works
06:14 AM Tom_L: still a few odds n ends to move but nothing i need right away
06:54 AM JT-Cave: https://misfittoyscarclub.com/event/july-2024-mtcc-1-6-mile-track-day-1/
06:55 AM JT-Cave: thinking about going with a friend who has a C6
06:59 AM * JT-Cave starts his chicken day
08:07 AM Tom_L: sounds like fun
09:49 AM Gardenweazel: If my spindle is grounded, is it possible to use just a single wire directly to 7i76e INPUT pin?
09:50 AM Gardenweazel: Or do I need to go from +24vdc to same ping and then directly to single wire plate?
09:50 AM Gardenweazel: ping = pin
09:50 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> To do what? The 7i76 field power is not always connected to machine ground so you should have a separate return.
09:51 AM Gardenweazel: canĀ you explain the wire connections?
09:52 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> What are you trying to connect? A switch?
09:52 AM Gardenweazel: touch plate
09:52 AM Gardenweazel: touch off plate
09:55 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> The 7i76e has sinking inputs so requires a voltage (field voltage) on the pin to register a high or 1. Grounding a pin will do nothing. You could use a pull-up resistor to detect the pin being pulled low. Field power is often isolated from machine ground (it is on my machine) so you would need to connect the grounds for this to work.
09:56 AM Gardenweazel: the pullup resistor, is a 2k pullup sufficient for 24vdc?
09:57 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> You would need a minimum of a 1/4W resistor and a 1/2W would be safer.
09:57 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> Sorry, minimum of 1/2W.
10:13 AM Gardenweazel: so a 5-10k ohm pullup would be best if my math is correct?
10:17 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> The field IO have 20k pull down resistors so you need a small enough value to get you above 60% of Vin. 10k would be marginal. 4.7k is what I use.
10:18 AM Gardenweazel: ok, thanks

07:13 PM roycroft: most insurance companies write policies for antique vehicles
07:14 PM roycroft: and in the vehicle world, an antique is 75 years old or older
07:14 PM roycroft: now an antique vehicle with a state of the art fuel injection system is somewhat unusual :)
07:15 PM roycroft: speaking of antiques, i transported half of my 78s to the new house today, and none of them suffered any damage
07:15 PM roycroft: i'll bring the other half tomorrow
07:15 PM * roycroft thinks he should go make sure the victrola still works after the move
07:21 PM * roycroft cuts a rug with a hot tune by glenn miller and the orchestra
07:54 PM roycroft: i have my domino machine now too, so i can work on the office again
08:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> fuel injection isn't happening quite yet. I am a little uneasy about the engine. It has a knock at startup after sitting for a few days.. Sounds like rod knock but not sure
08:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> it goes away pretty quick - but is pretty unnerving
08:38 PM roycroft: do you have good oil pressure?
08:38 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> it seems to be around 30psi according to the gauge.
08:38 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> so - it seems good
08:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> It could be just lifter noise - these engines are known for it.. But it seems a bit fast.
08:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I was going to record it and see if I could relate it to rpm - but that hasn't happened yet
08:42 PM Tom_L: stuck lifter would be my bet
08:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I have new oil lines and oil filter coming.. The oil lines are seeping
08:42 PM Tom_L: hydraulic?
08:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I hope so.. No
08:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I should probably adjust them
08:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> but I guess the oil drains back and the rockers get really nosiy
08:42 PM Tom_L: meh, where did they go all these years?
08:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> noisey..
08:43 PM Tom_L: probably gummed up
08:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> that too..
08:43 PM roycroft: hydraulic lifters were pretty rare back then
08:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> but - I will probably run it..
08:43 PM Tom_L: i figured as much roy
08:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/bNfEBVBabAbGglIampyFZchS/PXL_20240608_190154793.jpg
08:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> found that in dads junk..
08:44 PM Tom_L: i worked on one that had babbet rod bearings with cups
08:44 PM roycroft: they were invented in the '30s, but weren't used widespread until the '70s/'80s
08:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> This engine is from around 60-61 according to the casting numbers
08:44 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't be surprised if that was the same on this truck
08:44 PM Tom_L: oh, well it wouldn't be then
08:45 PM Tom_L: i think that was more a 40's thing
08:45 PM Tom_L: oil bath air cleaner etc
08:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> So - it might have hydraulic lifters? i haven't looked..
08:45 PM Tom_L: hard to say
08:46 PM roycroft: yeah, if it's an early '60s engine they might be hydraulic
08:46 PM Tom_L: more likely a pressureized crank oiling system though
08:46 PM roycroft: my '57 chevy apache had an oil bath air cleaner
08:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> it has a canister filter mounted to the intake manifold..
08:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (it is a 235 six)
08:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> and it isn't consistant. I started it the next day - no knock. (and from what I have read - rod knock usually gets worse as the engine warms up...)
08:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> hmm - the internet says the last year for solid lifters is 55
08:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> so this might have hydraulic lifters.
08:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> so maybe that is the noise
08:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> so so suck your toe - all the way to mexico.
08:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (it has been a long day_
08:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> oil change and new filter might fix it
08:53 PM Tom_L: mileage?
08:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol
08:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> no clue
08:53 PM Tom_L: who knows/
08:53 PM Tom_L: ?
08:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> the engine was replaced before we bought it..
08:53 PM Tom_L: maybe run some oil conditioner of some type thru it
08:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> * dad bought it.
08:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> sure
08:53 PM xxcoder: mileage probably is "yes, all of em" lol
08:53 PM Tom_L: i dunno how effective that crap is
08:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> me either.. people like atf fluid for a bit..
08:56 PM Tom_L: i've heard pumping all sorts of things thru then chaning the oil
08:56 PM Tom_L: no load
08:56 PM xxcoder: seafoam oil is what I hear too
08:56 PM xxcoder: when I did oil sea foam on my old mecury car, it sure improved perforance a bit
08:56 PM xxcoder: it also turned oil extremely black
08:57 PM Tom_L: good thing is, it's not mine nad you're a long ways from me :)
08:57 PM xxcoder: just add seafoam, drive 100-200 miles then do full oil change
08:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I looked at the ad - it says 78000 miles. (that is what is on the odomenter)
08:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> nothing about the engine other than it was swapped
08:58 PM Tom_L: he'd have to do alot of laps around the farm to log 100 miles
08:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> right - that is about the amount of miles I want to put on it this summer
08:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> a bunch of 10 mile drives to take stuff to recycling
09:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> 10 trips would really clean this place up
09:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> weedwacking around metal sticking out of the ground is getting old
