12:15 AM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> Almost done wiring the power cabinet of the plasma cutter
12:15 AM XXCoder: getting there!
01:08 AM Deejay: moin
01:39 AM Rhine_Labs: Making connectors is while pimping the test bench https://www.stevenrhine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Nordson-EFD-Performus-VII-7012336-Pneumatic-Solder-Flux-Dispenser-Test-Fit-TE-Connector-Blue-Pin-Fit-scaled.jpg
01:39 AM Rhine_Labs: https://www.stevenrhine.com/?p=133705
04:28 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:12 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> Morning
06:25 AM Tom_L: morning
07:22 AM JT-Cave: see everyone in Marshall Tx after while
10:26 AM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> thats a prettyu decent price for a nordson efd
10:56 AM solarwind_: lolol iranian president's helicopter crashed
11:07 AM solarwind_ is now known as solarwind
11:07 AM solarwind: hopefully he's dead
11:35 AM solarwind: you're right
11:35 AM solarwind: interesting, most people don't know about that
12:10 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> because we all packed away our tshirts anymore
12:10 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> https://i.etsystatic.com/45057843/r/il/067439/5071802720/il_fullxfull.5071802720_dyuo.jpg
12:24 PM solarwind: Why are hotend heaters and bed heaters so underpowered...
12:24 PM solarwind: my JBC soldering station goes from 0 -> 350°C in 2 seconds
12:24 PM solarwind: it should take < 10s to bring the bed up to temperature
12:25 PM solarwind: should take < 2s to bring hotend up to temperature
12:25 PM solarwind: and all nozzles should have a shutter/iris for ooze prevention
12:26 PM solarwind: wrong channel sorry
01:39 PM XXCoder: man I got reminded of that channel machining
01:40 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/jMHeQTmyMLY
01:40 PM XXCoder: sadly guy only posted one video so far in 3 years
02:18 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
02:19 PM Unterhausen: the locals got a bigger cannon, apparently. Boom is much more impressive than the old cannon
02:32 PM Tom_L: Unterhausen, the side was split out on this one: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/San_Juan/Fort3.jpg
02:33 PM Tom_L: i'd imagine that would be a boom
02:34 PM Unterhausen: I was thinking they might have put too much powder in it
02:34 PM Unterhausen: the corps of cadets at my undergrad school blew up their cannon. Pieces went everywhere, fortunately no serious injuries
02:37 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/CXKyDmNvfaaofgeYTJltsCpm/20240519_151003.jpg
02:37 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> JT: finally excavated my MTB from the garage... i think all it needs is tires and tubes, and a new bike computer (always nice to know my speed/mileage). i had $220 saved toward fixing it, and i think i have more than enough 🙂
02:52 PM jdh: get a new chain & cables
02:59 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i may, depending on tire cost. the cable and chain function, but will be needed soon
03:08 PM Unterhausen: I would ride those tires, unless something is seriously wrong that I can't see
03:10 PM Unterhausen: if you need a new chain, you probably need a new cassette.
03:10 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> @solarwind tell me more about these shutters/iris
03:10 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> but its probably something to do with the mass its heating compared to a solderiron
03:11 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> tires are 20+ years old and will likely split with any air. rear already is split.
03:12 PM Tom_L: mine are dry rotted
03:12 PM Tom_L: but i don't ride much anymore
03:12 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> shame on you 😉
03:12 PM Tom_L: aluminum frame
03:13 PM Tom_L: got it from a kid many years back that wanted to upgrade
03:14 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> mine is a good steel frame. good for my 300# butt 😉
03:14 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/bike.jpg
03:15 PM Tom_L: pretty light by the standards then
03:15 PM Tom_L: now it's composite i suppose
03:16 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> Wal-Mart mongoose, or pre-wal-mart?
03:16 PM Tom_L: no it wasn't a cheap bike
03:16 PM Tom_L: i've no idea where he bought it originally
03:16 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i had a wally bike once, broke the chain first ride out 😉
03:17 PM Tom_L: i rode it for years with no issues
03:17 PM Tom_L: have the original forks somewhere
03:17 PM Tom_L: never used them
03:17 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> what is the original?
03:18 PM Tom_L: not shocks
03:18 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> oh, ok then
03:39 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:39 PM JT-Mobile: yo
03:44 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> yo yo
03:48 PM JT-Mobile: made it to Marshall Tx
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> nice, no troubles i hope
03:49 PM JT-Mobile: I30 sucks but the rest is not bad
03:50 PM JT-Mobile: 8.5 hours with several breaks to stretch muscles and take a leak
03:50 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> nice! did you see i found my mountain bike?
03:50 PM JT-Mobile: no, I didn't
03:51 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> on log2 it is around 3:31PM
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> 2:37 on that one
03:53 PM JT-Mobile: air up the tires and ride it
03:53 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> tires are bad, rear is split already
03:53 PM JT-Mobile: I don't see anything wrong with it
03:53 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> yeah, it looks good
03:53 PM JT-Mobile: just the rubber split?
03:54 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> yup, 20+ years old rubber
03:54 PM JT-Mobile: if they hold air ride!
03:55 PM JT-Mobile: you might clean and lube the chain... and lube the derailers
03:55 PM JT-Mobile: I converted mine to a single chain ring and took the derailleur off
03:55 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> rear has the tube balloning out a ways when i aired it, front may ride
03:56 PM JT-Mobile: ah yup the rear is toast then
03:56 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i thought about that, but i would run out of gears down the road, and different when i get to the trail
03:56 PM JT-Mobile: mine was a 27 speed and I never used the larger chain rings
03:57 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> mine is only 21, so 7spd rear
03:57 PM JT-Mobile: I got the smallest chain ring that would fit and I never use the tallest gear
03:57 PM JT-Mobile: on the trail I might use the first 5 but no more
03:58 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i use most of the gears when riding, i would miss the high gears on the down-hills 😉
03:59 PM JT-Mobile: I don't ride that fast... falling off will hurt
04:00 PM JT-Mobile: on the road bike I seldom go over 30
04:01 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i think my fastest on road, down a long hill, was 46
04:03 PM Tom_L: made it i see
04:03 PM JT-Mobile: yup
04:03 PM Tom_L: windy?
04:03 PM JT-Mobile: nothing broken?
04:03 PM Tom_L: windy as heck here
04:04 PM JT-Mobile: not much here
04:04 PM Tom_L: Tx looks good but we have some warnings W of us
04:05 PM JT-Mobile: no current observations from weather.gov
04:05 PM Tom_L: looks like it'll hit around 8
04:05 PM JT-Mobile: t storms
04:05 PM JT-Mobile: ?
04:05 PM Tom_L: yeah
04:05 PM Tom_L: hourly shows around 7
04:06 PM Tom_L: already been out and picked up some branches
04:06 PM JT-Mobile: doesn't look bad at the house
04:06 PM Tom_L: no
04:06 PM JT-Mobile: nothing to work on with flex?
04:07 PM Tom_L: been relaxin today
04:07 PM Tom_L: getting harder to break
04:07 PM JT-Mobile: :)
04:08 PM Tom_L: may have to dig into stuff i normally wouldn't use
04:08 PM JT-Mobile: I'm relaxing now with a bottle of River Ridge 2017 Norton
04:10 PM Tom_L: do you take 20 or 59 S?
04:10 PM Tom_L: no not 20.. 43
04:10 PM JT-Mobile: 59, it's very low traffic
04:11 PM JT-Mobile: 67 > I 30 > 59
04:11 PM Tom_L: looks like that takes you all the way in
04:12 PM JT-Mobile: yup we have to turn off 59 when we get close to Tomball IIRC
04:14 PM Tom_L: you won't hit much Houston traffic then
04:16 PM JT-Mobile: 3.5 hours to tomball from here
04:18 PM JT-Mobile: https://www.cafeitaliamarshall.com/
04:18 PM Tom_L: pizza sounds good about now
04:20 PM JT-Mobile: that's what I get every time I go
04:20 PM Tom_L: that or Lasagna
04:21 PM Tom_L: now you're just makin me hungry
04:21 PM JT-Mobile: sometimes Zia's on the Hill has a special Lasagna that is so good
04:22 PM JT-Mobile: that mongoose yours?
04:23 PM Tom_L: yeah
04:24 PM JT-Mobile: I have a Giant 29'er
04:24 PM Tom_L: i've had that for probably 30 yrs
04:24 PM Tom_L: aluminum
04:24 PM Tom_L: needs tires
04:25 PM Tom_L: still in fair shape other than that
04:27 PM JT-Mobile: I need a new back tire
04:28 PM Tom_L: mine aren't worn, they're rotten
04:28 PM Tom_L: not worn enough to replace anyway
04:29 PM JT-Mobile: I'm lucky and Wolf Creek has 27 miles of trails and it's only 6 miles from the house
04:30 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> that is lucky
04:30 PM JT-Mobile: yup
04:30 PM JT-Mobile: before that we had to ride on horse trails and that sucked big time
04:30 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i have to either transport my bike or ride roads to get to the trails
04:30 PM JT-Mobile: https://gnipsel.com/images
04:31 PM JT-Mobile: does that open for you guys?
04:31 PM Tom_L: not yet
04:31 PM JT-Mobile: odd
04:31 PM Tom_L: probably not since your main page pops right up
04:32 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> what he said
04:32 PM JT-Mobile: https://gnipsel.com/images/vehicles/e-bike/
04:32 PM JT-Mobile: weird subdirectories open for me
04:33 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i gotta run to the store, anyway
04:33 PM Tom_L: that did
04:33 PM JT-Mobile: later
04:34 PM Tom_L: is that what you normally ride?
04:34 PM JT-Mobile: I ride that around the area and sometimes to town
04:34 PM JT-Mobile: it's just a fun ride
04:34 PM Tom_L: yup
04:35 PM Tom_L: your mailbox rider
04:35 PM Tom_L: :)
04:35 PM JT-Mobile: at wolf creek I ride the Giant 29er
04:36 PM JT-Mobile: lately I've been riding the road bike on Shelby Road sidewalk
04:39 PM XXCoder: man happy atom. was a very good creative channel with print, laser and milling stuff. dead channel for 3 years now
04:48 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/Riri4vXsO_U press vs car jacks
04:49 PM XXCoder: one even didnt reach ton
05:01 PM XXCoder: two didnt pass both rating lift power and couldnt stand up to rated weight
05:01 PM XXCoder: fun
05:06 PM Tom_L: i used to make metal test specimens they would pull to failure for aircraft
05:06 PM Tom_L: along the grain and cross grain
05:06 PM Tom_L: bars and flats
05:06 PM XXCoder: thats cool
05:07 PM XXCoder: they can sim all they want, but some physical testing i required
05:07 PM Tom_L: they'd bring us a good size block of material and we cut the parts from it to spec
05:10 PM JT-Mobile: a machine shop at home made a few thousand dog bones for aircraft carrier launch thing but didn't see that they must be forged not billet
05:10 PM XXCoder: doh
05:10 PM XXCoder: costly mistake
05:10 PM JT-Mobile: yup
05:19 PM Tom_L: the original trailing links for the Citation10 we machined from billet. they tried using some from another aircraft but weren't heavy enough an needed some to test before making the forgings
05:19 PM Tom_L: that was a fair chunk of Ti
05:21 PM XXCoder: reminded me of that time the modeler made an error in design from prints
05:22 PM XXCoder: small bump I called "nose" was on wrong side
05:22 PM XXCoder: over thousand was scrapped. there was tons tons work on those, including broaching to precise angle
05:23 PM Tom_L: they used to have a pic of it on their site but not anymore
05:24 PM Tom_L: part of the landing gear strut
05:34 PM Tom_L: i forget what it was on, maybe the apache but they recently discovered an in service part was machined with the wrong grain direction which covers hundreds maybe thousands of in-service parts
05:34 PM XXCoder: ow
05:34 PM XXCoder: grain direction was pretty rare but we have system to always have grain direction shown
05:35 PM XXCoder: and jaws is marked with grain direction too
05:35 PM Tom_L: it's crucial on aircraft
05:35 PM XXCoder: yeah that shop made a lot of boeing parts
05:35 PM XXCoder: grain direction isnt common in set of parts it made though
05:36 PM Tom_L: anything structural should be
05:36 PM XXCoder: the big parts was all cast, like that bone
05:37 PM XXCoder: range of bones, from small one to really big $50,000 titanium cast parts
05:37 PM Loetmichel: Isnt cast steel weaker than forged steel?
05:37 PM Tom_L: kid was telling me about that the other day.. was before him but they may have to replace them all
05:37 PM Tom_L: Loetmichel, yes
05:37 PM Loetmichel: thought so
05:38 PM XXCoder: about that 50k ti parts, just before I was hired there, guy scrapped one, and repeated exact same mistake on second one. first one would have been ok, but 2 on same mistake? he was fired
05:40 PM Tom_L: machine time on those links was over a week
05:40 PM XXCoder: insame
05:40 PM Tom_L: 24/7
05:40 PM XXCoder: with machine time that long, id triple verify sensive stuff
05:40 PM XXCoder: like grain direction
05:41 PM Tom_L: i probably still have the model for that somewhere
05:42 PM Tom_L: although, i didn't program it
05:42 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: i recently made a Notebook enclosure out of 2 20mm thick slabs and one 10mm thick for the display.
05:43 PM Loetmichel: the two halves of the Notebook body took 80h each to mill on the CNC 6040.
05:43 PM Loetmichel: Better not making a mistake there ;)
05:43 PM XXCoder: indeed
05:43 PM Loetmichel: slabs of AlMg3 alu
06:15 PM Tom_L: Loetmichel, do you run coolant on those?
06:16 PM Loetmichel: nope, milling dry
06:16 PM Loetmichel: Here is the lower part getting the plug holes milled: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=18164&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
06:17 PM Loetmichel: that was "fun" to mill that slab
06:17 PM Tom_L: on a small mill yeah
06:17 PM JT-Mobile: damn that was a good meal
06:18 PM Loetmichel: (and yes. that is a Proxxon/dremel-like tool in a horizontal holder)
06:18 PM Loetmichel: Its not the size that is the problem
06:19 PM Loetmichel: Its the weak gantry. Had to mill at F1200 an 0.15mm depth of cut with a 6mm two flute mill bit.
06:19 PM Tom_L: i think i've seen that one
06:19 PM Loetmichel: took 80h :)
06:19 PM Loetmichel: (for the slab to be holloed out)
06:19 PM Loetmichel: +w
06:20 PM * JT-Mobile thinks it will be an early night
06:21 PM Loetmichel: F1200 means 1200mm/min btw
06:22 PM Tom_L: a respectable feedrate
06:23 PM JT-Mobile: I thought F1200 was a really big Ford truck
06:24 PM Loetmichel: Tom_L: machine doesent like more DOC, so i have to trade feed rate.
06:25 PM Loetmichel: doesent like that either, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7eO5cu-fXg
06:25 PM Loetmichel: :D
06:25 PM Tom_L: not quite the 200ipm my kid does with his roughing 2" shell mill.. but still
06:26 PM Tom_L: all a matter of perspective
06:29 PM Tom_L: i've been impressed what you get away with on those little machines
06:29 PM Loetmichel: same
06:30 PM Loetmichel: especially if you consider that those $2000 machines survived ~8 years of industrial use with minimal maintenance
06:31 PM Tom_L: is the weight for Z?
06:32 PM Tom_L: looking thru the 'window'
06:32 PM Tom_L: maybe that's part of something else
06:35 PM Loetmichel: weight?
06:35 PM Tom_L: square block with a string tied to it
06:35 PM Tom_L: left side
06:36 PM Tom_L: i had a counterweight on my sherline Z when i had it
06:36 PM Loetmichel: video?
06:36 PM Loetmichel: or a picture?
06:36 PM Tom_L: pic
06:36 PM Loetmichel: ah!
06:37 PM Tom_L: i totally missed the video!
06:37 PM Loetmichel: nope, thats for the exhaust fan flap of the workshop
06:37 PM Loetmichel: to keep the critters out
06:37 PM Tom_L: that thing's shakin the whole workbench
06:37 PM Loetmichel: indeed
06:38 PM Loetmichel: it wasnt happy to mill ~1000 hexagonal air holes into an 1,5mm alu sheet :)
06:39 PM Tom_L: wouldn't wanna be the one deburring them either
06:40 PM Loetmichel: Thats what a roller grinder is for
06:40 PM Loetmichel: with a "felt" type drum
