#linuxcnc Calendar

12:58 AM Deejay: moin
01:14 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> No worries
01:21 AM BlacktonLaptop: Does anyone know what version of LinuxCNC I would need for Ubuntu 20.04?
01:22 AM BlacktonLaptop: I downloaded the latest but it says the Python dependency is unsatisfiable
01:24 AM jpa-: probably 2.8
01:24 AM jpa-: though i see no reason not to use latest with e.g. Ubuntu 22.04
01:25 AM BlacktonLaptop: It's 20.04, not 22.04
01:25 AM BlacktonLaptop: I'll try 2.8
01:25 AM jpa-: yes, but why not just upgrade?
01:29 AM BlacktonLaptop: broken packages and all kinds of bugs like that. If I had days to trouble-shoot the OS I might try that.
01:30 AM BlacktonLaptop: I've tried multiple times to upgrade the OS, but every time I get bogged down into multiple days of issues and eventually move on with life.
01:30 AM BlacktonLaptop: I'll upgrade when I get a new computer!
01:31 AM BlacktonLaptop: I can't find the 2.8 download though. The link goes to an information-only page with no download link, and the download link takes you to a 2.9-only page
01:35 AM BlacktonLaptop: Is there an archive somewhere with the 2.8 downloads?
02:40 AM jpa-: BlacktonLaptop: looks like there is 2.9 packages for Debian Bullseye which should match Ubuntu 20.04 https://www.linuxcnc.org/dists/bullseye/
02:41 AM jpa-: looks like 2.8 was based on buster, so you'll find it in https://www.linuxcnc.org/dists/buster/
02:51 AM BlacktonLaptop: Well if 2.9 works on Ubuntu 20.04, then I'll try that. But I'm not sure which is the file I need to download. That link is a directory of all different files. I assume some are documentation files and things like that, but I'm not sure which file is for the actual program.
04:21 AM Tom_L: morning

05:08 AM JT-Cave: morning
08:00 AM * JT-Cave starts his chicken day
08:19 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> Any idea on this? 🙂
08:21 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Once upon a time there was a hardware wiki. I use Lenovo M700s on a few mills, or just what ever computer I can find.
08:21 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> If your running CAM generated code I find 8gb ram is minimum.
08:21 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Avoid discrete graphics cards
08:44 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I have been using hp sff 8300's
08:51 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Depending on your regional area north of the 49th we have retail.era.ca which is older electronics but usually they're pretty solid still.
08:53 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16883451545?Item=N82E16883451545
08:53 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> I also use the HP sff 8300 systems. Haven't had a problem with them yet and they are cheap.
08:54 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:03 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> With ethernet connexion ?
09:04 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> Yes. I use the on board ethernet for the mesa interface and a usb-ethernet dongle to connect to the rest of the network. I haven't found the wifi to be too great on them.
09:04 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> I'm in Europe, French /Switzerland boarder
09:05 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> Cool thank you
09:05 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> 152 euros, nice indeed
09:06 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> Not the fastest thing out there but more than enough for LinuxCNC.
09:08 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> As long as it performs well for linuxcnc and rt prempt kernel this is fine
09:15 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/XCtTJEsuOPAxFuGDuycmRsRn/PXL_20230730_143559867.jpg
11:05 AM JT-Cave: nap time
11:18 AM Tom_L: close
01:21 PM solarwind: SBR rails give you a lot of rail for your $, damn
01:21 PM solarwind: almost twice the length as the more rigid HGR rail
01:22 PM solarwind: I wouldn't use on a CNC machine, but for every other application, they look good
01:22 PM solarwind: also really easy to wipe down clean in dusty environments
02:13 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Tom_L looks like I need to look at the spindle code
03:01 PM solarwind: Tom_L https://www.bell-everman.com/images/2023/08/08/be-sblstandard-callouts-web.jpg
03:01 PM solarwind: I prototyped that, works very well
03:01 PM solarwind: I used a 10mm wide GT2 belt
03:07 PM solarwind: Damn, SBR20 might have been overkill
03:07 PM solarwind: I should have gone SBR16 or 12
03:10 PM solarwind: They also come with a lot of random gunk and glue from tape and other dirt on them
03:10 PM solarwind: at least not scratched
03:11 PM solarwind: nowhere near the tolerance of the HGR rails either, lots of slop (relatively) that can I can easily feel with my hands. But that's perfect for my application here
03:18 PM Tom_L: solarwind, practically a 'no slip' design
03:19 PM solarwind: more importantly, very simple and cheap to implement in a day's work
03:28 PM solarwind: Oh the SBR bearing blocks have set screws to adjust the clamping force
03:29 PM solarwind: that takes care of slop. Nice spring steel inner bearing carrier that looks like it spreads the force from the set screw evenly
03:29 PM solarwind: has internal alignment slots as well. It's made well
03:32 PM solarwind: nice. Sum-ting-wong brand linear rails so far have all been excellent quality which is highly unexpected
03:32 PM solarwind: 3m for $100 ish CAD is totally worth it
03:56 PM CloudEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0e8e_U2eYE
03:56 PM solarwind: CloudEvil old news, have 5 of those cyclonic separators, they work amazing
03:57 PM solarwind: I don't know why every vacuum doesn't have that mechanism
03:58 PM solarwind: https://www.oneida-air.com/dust-deputy/wet-dry-vacuum-kits/anti-static-dust-deputy-diy-cyclone-separator bought 5 of those used for $10 each
03:58 PM solarwind: Also have a vacuum bag and HEPA filter inside the the shop vacs. They never get clogged, filters look like new
03:59 PM solarwind: reduces the airflow significantly, almost by 50% with the number of filtration stages I have, but at least it's consistent and very clean
04:01 PM solarwind: big particles never make it into the vacuum bag so those last a really long time too. The filter media gets clogged before the bag itself is full
04:05 PM solarwind: CloudEvil LOL "90mm (3.54 iguana toes)" thanks for that. He hates retard units too :D
04:06 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> anybody ever use one of these? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08X6Z8HM2
04:08 PM XXCoder: reviews isnt looking pretty
04:08 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> hmmm
04:08 PM CloudEvil: solarwind: yeah, they don't really work well if you want to keep in the same volume as the original appliance though
04:08 PM solarwind: All I can tell you is the "dust deputy" (bog standard style) works flawlessly
04:09 PM solarwind: CloudEvil unnecessary constraint
04:09 PM solarwind: It's amazing that it works as well as it does. If it takes up like 2L of extra volume in a closet, who cares
04:09 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> but does it connect to 4in hose?
04:10 PM solarwind: yes there are bigger models that do
04:10 PM solarwind: I have one for my dust collector as well
04:11 PM roycroft: mine clogs occaionally when i'm taking thick cuts of wide boards with my thicknesser
04:11 PM solarwind: I will never run a vacuum without one of these things
04:12 PM roycroft: when it does, rhe dust deputy is bypassed and the main bag fills
04:13 PM roycroft: that is annoying, but more the fault of my dust collector and ducting than the dust deputy
04:16 PM Tom_L: mill work places have scaled up versions of those
04:16 PM roycroft: yes
04:16 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> my father and i built similar, but it clogs now and then
04:16 PM roycroft: like two stories tall
04:16 PM Tom_L: yup
04:17 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I found the dust deputy didnt separate the fines
04:18 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> ours goes 6 or 8in for our big grizzley dust collector. we hardly ever change a dust bag, but the dust bin fills up fast
04:18 PM solarwind: JT that's not really possible
04:18 PM solarwind: not with this mechanism anymway
04:19 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Whatever
04:19 PM roycroft: mine does
04:19 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> I have a clearvue mini and I don't think I have changed my vacuum filter in years.
04:19 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
04:19 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> low velocity air and a cyclone will do that
04:21 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> man i can't wait to start building my new shop.... too bad i have to sell my truck to do it, but the camper won't sell...
04:22 PM Tom_L: what's a camper without a truck to pull it?
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> worth about as much as it is with the truck...
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> How will you deliver your products to market without a truck?
04:23 PM roycroft: a place to store your important documents
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i won't have a shop if i can't raise funds to build it
04:24 PM Tom_L: you won't have a business if you can't deliver the goods
04:24 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> my father still has his truck
04:25 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i don't know what else to do, i am at the end of my means
04:26 PM Tom_L: JT, you must have seen my spindle notes then?
04:47 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
04:52 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> upper 80's today...........88ish in my neighborhood
05:00 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
05:00 PM solarwind: beep boop beep boop translation bot: 88°retard = 31°C
05:05 PM roycroft: the er doctor billed my insurance $2800 today
05:06 PM roycroft: they are paying him $300
05:06 PM solarwind: Sounds like capitalism working
05:07 PM solarwind: unregulated crony capitalism*
05:07 PM roycroft: it's a bunch of malarkey
05:08 PM Tom_L: you'll still get one from the anesthesiologist and hospital ya know
05:08 PM roycroft: but not my malarkey, fortunately
05:09 PM roycroft: i already got the hospital billing from my er visit
05:10 PM Tom_L: you'll get one for the surgery too
05:10 PM roycroft: i've not been billed for any of the surgery stuff yet, though
05:10 PM roycroft: they need time to make up the numbers for that
05:11 PM roycroft: the surgery center was a different facility
05:12 PM * roycroft just got off work, and actually accomplished stuff today
05:12 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
05:14 PM Leeloo: In a lovely turn of events, completely by accident, I found that I already have 7i85 for my encoders - apparently I got it years ago and forgot... typical of me :)
05:15 PM Leeloo: I will need to fit it into my control box, but I think I can do it if I mount it on a bracket that makes it float about 7i76: https://imgur.com/a93RSqr
05:15 PM Leeloo: above*
05:19 PM Leeloo: I have already one of them mounted: https://imgur.com/QMxKoWJ

05:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> that is around 24 hours...
06:06 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/V0e8e_U2eYE interesting.
06:06 PM XXCoder: dust collectipn system
06:54 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
07:16 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
07:18 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
07:46 PM lcnc-relay: <kalabir> howdy yall
07:47 PM lcnc-relay: <kalabir> i am in need of some assistance we are trying to configure lcnc with a mesa 7i96s and we are running into a road block if anybody is available and familiar with mesa any help would be greatly appreciated
07:48 PM Tom_L: ask the real question
07:48 PM Tom_L: are you familiar with mesact?
07:49 PM Tom_L: https://www.gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/mesact/index.html
07:49 PM Tom_L: https://github.com/jethornton/mesact
07:50 PM lcnc-relay: <kalabir> system set up as follows rpi4 with debian bookworm (linux cnc disbo) with mesa 7i96s board and servos from clear path servos. the issue we are running into is when we are on the point and click config for Xmotor we will get an error message= locale.Error: unsupported locale setting
07:50 PM lcnc-relay: <kalabir> we were trying to get that a lil while ago but the github for what i now assume is the first version ot nuked
07:51 PM lcnc-relay: <kalabir> * got
07:52 PM Tom_L: there is an rpi version for mesact
07:52 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
07:54 PM Unterhausen: someone on fb is trying to sell a starrett surface plate for $3500. It's so weathered it looks like concrete
07:54 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
07:54 PM XXCoder: lol
07:55 PM Tom_L: might work for a tombstone
07:55 PM Unterhausen: It appears to be pink granite, but so weathered it takes work to see the pink
07:55 PM Tom_L: pink isn't the best
07:55 PM Tom_L: black is afik
07:55 PM Unterhausen: tombstone is a good idea. The family can use the inserts to attach momentos
07:56 PM XXCoder: pink is harder to calbrate but lasts longer
07:56 PM XXCoder: once its dead its too hard to fix usually so yeah
07:56 PM Unterhausen: I have never seen a pink granite surface table in person, all the ones I worked with were black
07:56 PM XXCoder: I remember robertz video where he fixes the pink one he got for free
07:56 PM Tom_L: i was thinking black was a harder granite but maybe not
07:57 PM Unterhausen: the usual price for used surface tables is free
07:57 PM Unterhausen: mine was free
07:57 PM XXCoder: it was way too out of spec to be reasonable cost to fix
07:57 PM Tom_L: you got what you paid for
07:57 PM Tom_L: a rock
07:57 PM lcnc-relay: <kalabir> its seems that i am unable to install mesact also i hae zero experience with linux
07:57 PM Unterhausen: it's great for my purposes where 1mm is within spec
07:57 PM XXCoder: he is expert so he fixed it himself
07:57 PM CloudEvil: https://i.imgur.com/UZFvM04.mp4 If it's still around when you get darkness, remember the aurora. https://i.imgur.com/UZFvM04.mp4
07:57 PM Tom_L: kalabir did you download the .deb file?
07:58 PM Tom_L: sudo gdebi mesactxxxx.deb
07:58 PM Tom_L: you may have to install debhelper
07:58 PM Tom_L: sudo apt install debhelper
07:58 PM XXCoder: its been 11 months since his last video. hope hes ok
07:59 PM XXCoder: correct spelling is robrenz
07:59 PM Tom_L: CloudEvil, yeah we're supposed to be able to see it here but it may be too light in the city
07:59 PM Unterhausen: I was wondering
07:59 PM CloudEvil: Tom_L: If you have light pollution, cameras can sometimes show it better. But it will wash it out
07:59 PM Unterhausen: our radar looks like it might be clear at midnight
08:00 PM Tom_L: i assume it goes on for quite a while
08:00 PM Unterhausen: robrenz did a video where I was sure he would cite my old boss, but he didn't. Someone I know though
08:01 PM XXCoder: he hearted some comment last month so I guess he was ok in least till last month
08:01 PM Unterhausen: My old boss was a better source, but maybe not as easy to find
08:02 PM lcnc-relay: <kalabir> ill give that a try
08:02 PM Tom_L: Unterhausen, you measure your parts with a yardstick?
08:02 PM Tom_L: (wood)
08:02 PM Tom_L: of course...
08:02 PM Unterhausen: 1mm isn't quite that coarse
08:03 PM Unterhausen: my granite plate is probably a lot flatter than that, but I don't care
08:04 PM Unterhausen: It's properly mounted to maintain flatness
08:04 PM Unterhausen: not kinematic, but compliant
08:12 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
08:16 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
08:26 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
08:27 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc

08:39 PM Tom_L: :)
08:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> next is brake lights, running lights - then I have to figure out blinkers.
08:45 PM Tom_L: is this going to become your daily driver???
08:45 PM Tom_L: :)
08:46 PM roycroft: it's 31 degrees here
08:47 PM roycroft: my new house has ac, so don't think for a moment that i don't want to get this move done
08:53 PM roycroft: nice rig, skunkworks
09:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/cIhXvbyEHeePoFTFdMqrFOsh/PXL_20240511_021240469.NIGHT.jpg
09:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Neat,
09:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Find out if I have Internet in the morning
09:28 PM roycroft: we may see the aurora borealis way down here tonight and/or tomorrow night
09:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Took the kids for a walk..
09:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> This was directly above which surprised me..
09:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Kids thought it was cool.
09:30 PM roycroft: nice
09:40 PM CaptHindsight: too much cloud cover right now
09:40 PM CaptHindsight: it might be clear later
09:43 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
09:55 PM roycroft: it's clear here
09:55 PM roycroft: so maybe we'll be lucky
09:56 PM roycroft: and another reason i wish my move was done
09:57 PM roycroft: lots of urban light pollution here, but it's pretty dark at the new place
10:04 PM XXCoder: nice
10:04 PM XXCoder: its quite hard to see milky way
10:04 PM XXCoder: anywhere in west wa
10:08 PM CloudEvil: If only LASERs had been the first light source to be efficient.
10:08 PM CloudEvil: RGB LASER lighting would be so easy to filter out well.
10:09 PM roycroft: it is pretty dark on the west end of the peninsula in places
10:15 PM XXCoder: suppoely ill be able to ee aurora today
10:16 PM roycroft: you can see aurora avenue any day
10:16 PM roycroft: ;
10:16 PM XXCoder: hah
10:16 PM roycroft: :P
10:25 PM XXCoder: it would be funny to take pictures at aurora ave for aurora
