12:16 AM mrec: so cool, cleaning the encoder disc from the mitsubishi CNC recovered X and Y now that machine is fully working and ready to be reverse engineered for LinuxCNC
12:31 AM XXCoder: nice
12:49 AM CaptHindsight: ziper2: I developed a water soluble resin for investment casting
01:02 AM Deejay: moin
04:43 AM Tom_L: morning
04:43 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> Morning
04:43 AM Tom_L: https://twitter.com/TungaloyJapan/status/1782593159492686276
04:47 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> so thats how thread milling is done... i honestly thought you just spun a tap in at high speed... LMAO
04:58 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:09 AM JT-Cave: morning
08:34 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I now have 4 3d printers.. 3 of which are in working order..
08:35 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> The 4th was bought by dad and we never really got it together. Some sort of cheap big printer. No clue what hardware it has
08:35 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> but - they also don't have a home.
08:35 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Sitting on the floor in the attic
10:23 AM mrec: https://www.cnctakang.com/upload/images/vmc-850l-a1.jpg
10:23 AM mrec: did anyone see those kind of slides out there?
10:23 AM mrec: or better did anyone workw ith those kind of slides already, and maintain them?
10:24 AM mrec: I wonder what that is called
10:25 AM mrec: this just looks like steel on steel?
10:26 AM mrec: I work on a similar machine, more compact (the x-table stack isn't that high)
10:34 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> The K&T has box ways with recirculating kneedle bearings.

11:03 AM rigid: did anyone ever use an optical mouse to generate a COMP_FILE? couldn't find anything in the forum
11:03 AM rigid: with cheap gaming mice, it seems like a bargain alternative to glass slide rules, in theory
11:04 AM rigid: *glass scales
11:52 AM jpa-: rigid: i have tried using optical mouse sensors for other measurement tasks, even with dot pattern they have rathe poor accuracy over longer distances
11:55 AM jpa-: usually just 32x32 sensor and 6 or 8 bit grayscale, you already get around 0.1% to 1% tracking error over 1 sensor width of movement, and it is not systematic
11:56 AM jpa-: not sure if huge amount of runs and averaging would give something useful
12:15 PM solarwind: When I was really little, I had one of those toy airplanes on a string that you hang from a ceiling that keeps flying in a circle continuously
12:16 PM solarwind: It had a small motor and propellor that was just enough to keep it flying in a circle
12:16 PM solarwind: what were those called?
12:16 PM bjorkintosh: whirligigs?
12:16 PM solarwind: no no lol
12:17 PM solarwind: imagine it flying in a circular orbit
12:18 PM solarwind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFTwu69BokU
12:18 PM solarwind: there we go
12:19 PM solarwind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkhIVJ5w4Rc only two videos on it lol
12:49 PM roycroft: veeger has called home again!
12:49 PM roycroft: after five months, nasa have reestablished contact with it
12:51 PM roycroft: turns out it has a bad memory chip, and nasa were able to lock out that memory, and now it's happily chatting with nasa and no longer sending gibberish
12:57 PM XXCoder: yep
12:57 PM XXCoder: fun isnt it
12:57 PM XXCoder: its older than having a copy at home to test things out
12:57 PM XXCoder: so they had to figure things out lol
01:08 PM roycroft: yeah, and apparently it was really tricky to do
01:09 PM roycroft: the corrupted memory stored part of the systems software, which is why it was looping its messages
01:10 PM roycroft: they needed to move the software elsewhere, but there wasn't enough cotiguous memory available, so they had to split the code into small chunks and install each chunk where there was room, and then change a bunch of pointers so that it all worked
01:13 PM XXCoder: insane
01:13 PM XXCoder: and they did it with voyager not even in sol system
02:05 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
02:08 PM roycroft: i wonder if the corrupted memory is what is causing veeger to search for its creator
02:08 PM XXCoder: oh boy lol
02:08 PM Unterhausen: I bought the wrong kind of battery for the lawnmower. Again.
02:09 PM XXCoder: i remember when it was orginally stated to be AU long, but scaled back
02:10 PM XXCoder: picture this, a ship one AU long
02:38 PM rigid: jpa-: i don't get as much error. 0.01% with an old 1600 cpi sensor and now ordered a 26000 cpi sensor with 160 ips max. scan speed. sure you tried a more or less modern gaming mouse?
02:39 PM rigid: (i.e. >1600 cpi)
02:40 PM rigid: jpa-: did you put your scripts online?
02:41 PM rigid: although I think I already got a working generate_comp_file.py more or less. but probably wouldn't hurt to see how it's actually done if you know what you're doing :)
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/bKAriqDqSCSSTCuQlqWlLFFj/20240423_152811.jpg
03:35 PM JT-Shop: I need one...
03:37 PM pcw--home: MOV?
03:37 PM JT-Shop: not sure, it was at the coil of a hydraulic valve
03:37 PM JT-Shop: between the hot and neutral 120vac
03:38 PM JT-Shop: each valve has two one for each direction
03:38 PM pcw--home: Looks like a MOV and CKE makes MOVS
03:38 PM JT-Shop: thanks
03:41 PM pcw--home: Is that 20 mm in diameter?
03:42 PM JT-Shop: yes
03:42 PM pcw--home: https://us.rs-online.com/product/hvca/z130la20a/70016062/
03:43 PM JT-Shop: thanks
03:43 PM pcw--home: (may need to search for a US disty)
03:43 PM JT-Shop: brb time to spoil the hens
03:43 PM JT-Shop: ok
03:43 PM JT-Shop: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/galco-industrial-electronics/Z480LA40A/15657950
03:43 PM JT-Shop: close but wrong part number...
03:44 PM pcw--home: Main thing you need is the 200V DC/130VAC rating and physical size
03:45 PM pcw--home: (I assume this is run on 120VAC?)
03:46 PM JT-Cave: yes 120vac
03:47 PM pcw--home: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/bourns-inc/MOV-20D201K/2799097 is pretty close
03:48 PM Tom_L: solder a wire on the lead :)
03:48 PM Tom_L: mov (surge clamp)
03:48 PM JT-Cave: thanks
03:49 PM pcw--home: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/littelfuse-inc/V130LA20AP/1009205 similar but red
03:49 PM Tom_L: pull one from a decent surge block
03:49 PM Tom_L: if you can't find one
03:49 PM JT-Cave: might get treated like a red head step child LOL
03:50 PM JT-Cave: surge block?
03:50 PM Tom_L: https://www.darrahelectric.com/products/z130la10a
03:50 PM Tom_L: like those 6 plug extensions
03:53 PM Tom_L: apc makes a bunch of them
03:54 PM Tom_L: https://www.apc.com/us/en/product/P6TM10/apc-essential-surgearrest-6-outlets-with-phone-protection-10ft-cord-120v-metal/
03:54 PM Tom_L: there's bound to be a couple or three in one of those
03:55 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, what's yours off of?
03:56 PM roycroft: i had a disaster yesterday - i was trying to pull some 6/3 uf from my main panel to my new subpanel (i had the uf in stock)
03:57 PM roycroft: after two hours of painstakingly stripping the outer jacket off without nicking the conductor insulators and installing it, i found a short between one of the hot lines and neutral
03:57 PM roycroft: i ended up pulling it out, of course, and i still can't find the short
03:58 PM Tom_L: it may find you in the middle of the night
03:58 PM roycroft: but i decided to not mess with that any more, as i really hate working with uf
03:58 PM roycroft: so i went to get some flex conduit and some thhn, to do it more properly (and easily)
03:58 PM roycroft: but the guy at the store kept insisting that i need 1-1/2" flex conduit to carry the wires
03:59 PM Tom_L: tell him it's 2 different projects
03:59 PM roycroft: i balked at that, and just looked it up in a fill chart - i only need to pull 8ga for what i'm doing, and i can put 5 8ga wires in 3/4" metallic flex conduit
03:59 PM roycroft: i only need to pull 4, so i have a big cushion there
03:59 PM roycroft: i'd much rather deal with 3/4" flex conduit than 1-1/2" flex conduit
04:00 PM roycroft: but i'd really rather a so-called electrical expert give me useful information :)
04:01 PM Tom_L: what's 6ga good for? 50A?
04:01 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, a cardboard baler
04:01 PM Tom_L: i forget, it's been so long
04:01 PM roycroft: 6ga is rated for 65a
04:01 PM roycroft: 8ga for 50a
04:01 PM roycroft: and this is a 50a sub-panel
04:02 PM Tom_L: that's what i ran to the garage some eon's ago
04:02 PM roycroft: and the conduit run from the main panel to the sub-panel is 6 feet, so there's no derating involved at all
04:02 PM Tom_L: but i used a 50A breaker
04:02 PM JT-Shop: something like this https://www.compact-and-bale.com/horizontal-balers/cb44-semi-auto-baler
04:02 PM roycroft: when i build the addition to my shop, i'll pull 100a to the shop sub panel
04:02 PM roycroft: although 50a would probably be fine
04:03 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, for personal use i'd solder a wire on the lead
04:03 PM Tom_L: it didn't blow did it?
04:03 PM Tom_L: not from the looks of it
04:03 PM roycroft: i'll need 20a for a machine, 20a for the compressor and dust collector, and 20a or so of 120v or lighting and miscellaneous stuff
04:04 PM roycroft: but that makes things kind of tight
04:04 PM roycroft: 100a would be a lot more comfortable
04:04 PM Tom_L: i've run my 5hp compressor all the lights and any hand tool i decided to use with no issues
04:04 PM roycroft: pulling 1/0 wire out to the shop not so much fun, but i only have to do that once
04:04 PM Tom_L: and the cnc
04:04 PM JT-Shop: it's a large cardboard bailer at a recycle place
04:04 PM roycroft: i need 50a to run my tig welder
04:04 PM pcw--home: JT-Shop: The MOV is there to protect the controlling relays contacts
04:05 PM roycroft: and that doesn't count lights
04:05 PM pcw--home: (from arcing)
04:05 PM JT-Shop: thanks, I'm short one at the moment but I left it off the seldom used valve
04:05 PM roycroft: i could get by with a 50a pull to the shop, but since the run is about 30', and will be underground, i might as well make it 100a
04:06 PM roycroft: when i first move in, though, power will be a 240v/20a extension cord and a 120v/20a extension cord
04:07 PM JT-Shop: https://www.datasheets360.com/part/detail/z130la20a/1568338555012430491/
04:07 PM Tom_L: roycroft, i bought a long heavy set for the camper way back
04:07 PM JT-Shop: that's the data sheet for the mov
04:07 PM Tom_L: it said i wasn't human
04:07 PM Tom_L: i believe it
04:08 PM Tom_L: 70 joules
04:08 PM Tom_L: clamp
04:09 PM rdtsc2: It just prevents the voltage there from going above 120VAC, which will happen when a coil is disconnected. They either fail by shorting, or blowing up
04:09 PM Tom_L: similar to the diode on a relay coil
04:10 PM rdtsc2: Right, just clamping to 130V or so instead of 0.6V
04:10 PM rdtsc2: Saves wear and tear on contacts
04:11 PM Tom_L: when i faked reverse on my sherline spindle i just used delays in lcnc for switching
04:12 PM Tom_L: watched the signal on the scope and delayed a bit longer than that
04:13 PM rdtsc2: Software can make things so much easier
04:13 PM pcw--home: Yes, typically diodes are used for DC flyback protection and MOVs/RC for AC
04:13 PM pcw--home: Though you can use MOVS for DC, especially if you want fast turn-off
04:20 PM rdtsc2: For even lower volts, TVS can be used (transient voltage suppressors.) These are like a diode, but with a defined forward (and backward) voltage drop. Usually these are chosen to be slightly higher than the nominal volage. 5.1V for 5V, 13V for 12V, 27V for 24V, 72V, etc. Those come in "unidirectional" and "bidirectional" varieties. Even
04:20 PM rdtsc2: small ones can handle a surprising surge (kilowatts for a very short time.) Handy for putting across things like Mesa output SSR contacts when driving any kind of DC inductive load (coil, relay, contactor, solenoid, small motor, etc.)
04:22 PM rdtsc2: https://octopart.com/search?q=27V+bidirectional+TVS¤cy=USD&specs=1
04:24 PM JT-Shop: thanks pcw--home got a couple on order
05:03 PM JT-Shop: dang digikey has shipped my order already
05:04 PM bjorkintosh: they were probably on their way to the post office anyway.
05:09 PM Tom_L: or they just generated a shipper for it
05:19 PM bjorkintosh: oh right. they're now just going to watch it and throw a dice on when to actually ship it.
05:23 PM Tom_L: dk is pretty good about shipping though
05:46 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, did you see the mesact fix
06:12 PM * flyback bites pcw--home
06:17 PM Tom_L: no i missed that...
06:17 PM Tom_L: i can build in a bit
06:17 PM Tom_L: just walked in
06:23 PM Tom_L: PR #95 up
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> used to be that if I ordered something from digikey - it was there the next day

11:11 PM solarwind: what the hell, is that guy standing above an aerating vat of powdered plastic wearing only a surgical mask?
11:11 PM XXCoder: way not enough ppa
11:12 PM solarwind: how are his lungs not coated in plastic by now
11:12 PM solarwind: surgical mask is completely useless
11:25 PM roycroft: the plastic will protect his lungs from pollutants
11:28 PM CaptHindsight: solarwind: because earlier that day he was dipping in PTFE and now the powder won't stick to his lungs, duh
11:29 PM roycroft: speaking of such things
11:29 PM CaptHindsight: and it's likely China, when he falls over dead they just shove the body out of the way and yell "Xià yīgè"
11:30 PM roycroft: i started sanding the sheetrock today
11:30 PM roycroft: instead of using my old pole sanding block i used one my fancy festool sanders, with a mesh abrasive
11:30 PM roycroft: there was zero dust
11:30 PM CaptHindsight: are you sanding the joint compound as well? :p
11:30 PM roycroft: well, that's what i'm primarily attempting to sand
11:31 PM roycroft: but this is not one of my better-refined skills
11:31 PM roycroft: neither the application nor the smoothing of the joint compound
11:31 PM roycroft: anyway, the amount of dust really was just about zerio
11:31 PM roycroft: zero
11:31 PM roycroft: i could seen none at all
11:31 PM roycroft: none landed on the floor
11:31 PM CaptHindsight: yeah it's like tomato paste sculptures, it takes some practice
11:32 PM solarwind: ah, 1µm dust, the best kind because you can't see it
11:32 PM roycroft: and when i wiped down the walls after sanding, there was no residue on the towel
11:32 PM solarwind: best of all, it doesn't get on the floor everywhere, it just floats in the air so you have nothing to clean up
11:32 PM roycroft: festool sanders have better than 98% extraction when used properly
11:33 PM CaptHindsight: it's mostly silica, so pretty safe....
11:34 PM roycroft: the walls in the room i'm working on are a little uneven
11:34 PM roycroft: they won't be perfectly flat when i'm done, but it's a studio, not a main living space
11:35 PM CaptHindsight: I get tired just thinking about this
11:35 PM roycroft: a good place to get started :)
11:35 PM roycroft: in the living room and dining room i'll probably gut the rooms and start from scratch when i remodel them
11:35 PM CaptHindsight: taping and sanding were things I never found to be fun
11:35 PM roycroft: i really dislike that work
11:35 PM roycroft: but i like the result, when the job is done decently
11:36 PM roycroft: sheetrock work is my least favorite of the building trades
11:36 PM CaptHindsight: plasterereres
11:36 PM roycroft: but i can't afford to hire it out
11:36 PM roycroft: so i just do it
11:38 PM CaptHindsight: https://youtu.be/feIWpPt0YJs?si=Do6JfOGSKZxFUTYQ&t=200
