#linuxcnc Calendar
12:59 AM Deejay: moin
01:51 AM mrec: those old cnc machines feel like playing in a casino, you can get the spare parts for any kind of amount it's pure gambling
01:52 AM mrec: while I was able to fix the X axis encoder by cleaning the disc yesterday the Y axis encoder looks bad under the microscope
01:54 AM mrec: spares are available for 100-600 USD
02:06 AM lcnc-relay: <ranga> spin the wheel, around she goes, where she stops, nobody knows
02:13 AM CaptHindsight: the 2GB ram version of this is only $20 https://radxa.com/products/zeros/zero3e/
02:14 AM CaptHindsight: easily runs LCNC
02:15 AM XXCoder: its said to be low latency. wonder how true that is
02:15 AM CaptHindsight: also has Gigabit Ethernet with PoE support, so you can run it with Mesa
02:25 AM lcnc-relay: <ranga> RK3566 is going to be about as capable as a Pi4
02:26 AM lcnc-relay: <ranga> Rockchip stuff is generally respectable
02:26 AM lcnc-relay: <ranga> the 3588 is firmly into 'serious business' territory
02:36 AM CaptHindsight: ranga: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/18-computer/48079-can-the-opi5-be-configured-to-run-lcnc already works with LCNC
02:38 AM lcnc-relay: <ranga> yep I know.
02:38 AM lcnc-relay: <ranga> I'm probably going to be using a BTT-Pi (because 24v native input)
02:39 AM lcnc-relay: <ranga> more obscure chip, but given I'll be running either over SPI or ethernet.... and its just a plasma cutter... it'll be fine.

04:48 AM Tom_L: morning
04:48 AM Tom_L: CaptHindsight, it would just look funny running a cincinnati milacron though
05:00 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:28 AM Deejay: good day
07:53 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> morning
07:57 AM bjorkintosh: mrec, what kind of microscope do you have?
07:59 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:06 AM mrec: it's a Sony IMX290 based HDMI camera
08:07 AM mrec: https://s3.amazonaws.com/i.snag.gy/Fmezbu.jpg
08:08 AM mrec: that's the dirt on the second encoder very interesting
08:08 AM mrec: no this is not a reflection effect, it's really coated like that
08:09 AM mrec: I cleaned it with a microfiber fabric after doing some rough cleaning with isopropyl alcohol
08:09 AM mrec: I wonder how this got applied there must have been some fumes or something like that
08:10 AM mrec: I will attach it tomorrow hopefully it will work
08:42 AM bjorkintosh: that is pretty good!
08:56 AM mrec: the encoder is like 30 cm far away from the camera
08:56 AM mrec: it could even be more
09:03 AM JT-Shop: damn laptop keeps dropping the wifi connection or the router is dunno how to tell
09:33 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:36 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
10:10 AM rdtsc2: Hopefully tommylight is on here somewhere. What report? https://forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/51743-mesa-card-combination-tool#298670
10:13 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> well, it actually was 81 here yesterday........may do it again today....
10:14 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Shop: just talked to a moving guy, who should be able to move my BP.... green cash.....
10:15 AM roycroft: i'm working on a plan to move my machines
10:15 AM roycroft: a lift gate truck is hard to come by around here
10:15 AM roycroft: fortunately, none of my machines weigh more than 1000lbs or so, but that's still a fair amount of weight, and my pickup bed is pretty high
10:16 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> you missed the bit of discusssion yesterday. My PB is 5500#. big and heavy series 2
10:16 AM roycroft: i'm thinking of building a ramp for the pickup and installing a 2 ton winch at the front of the bd
10:16 AM roycroft: yeah, that's some real weight
10:16 AM roycroft: more than the average bp, but even the "small" bp mills are hard to move without special equipment
10:16 AM roycroft: 1000lbs i can handle
10:17 AM roycroft: 2000lbs not so much
10:17 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> be carefull. don't mess up the bed. they're mostly just sheetmetal
10:17 AM roycroft: and 5500lbs means you hire it out
10:17 AM roycroft: yeah, and the bed already has a hole in it where the previous owner installed a 5th wheel hitch
10:17 AM roycroft: i have a rubber mat on the bed, so the hole is not a problem with most things
10:18 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT has some photos of him unloading his cnc lathe.....off a trailer
10:18 AM roycroft: but when it comes time to move the machines, i'll put a sheet of 3/4" plywood or osb in the bed for them to sit on while moving
10:18 AM roycroft: i have a trailer that sits a lot lower, but it needs some work before i can haul heavy-ish things in it
10:18 AM roycroft: i think the ramp and winch idea will work
10:19 AM roycroft: the winch i would mout at the front of the bed, on the top, so that it's pulling up instead of just laterally
10:19 AM roycroft: i can reinforce the winch mount easily
10:19 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> soon as I get it moved, I rearrange the garage a bit. and buy a track saw....
10:19 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> so I can start my cabinets
10:22 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: I rolled the BP out of the garage on 3/4" round bars. inch at a time. the Egyptian method
10:22 AM roycroft: that's a pretty good method
10:23 AM roycroft: for me, almost all my machines are on casters, at least 3-1/2", so rolling them up a ramp should work fine as long as the incline is not too steep and as long as i'm careful
10:23 AM roycroft: so a long ramp and a winch that can go slow
10:28 AM roycroft: the floor of my van sits a lot lower than the bed of my pickup, and it's a 3/4 ton van, so i could possible haul some machines in that
10:28 AM roycroft: mounting a winch inside the van at a height would be problematic, though
10:29 AM roycroft: and would involve some welding and reinfocement that i'd rather not deal with
10:29 AM roycroft: a rental truck with a lift gate would be ideal
11:45 AM JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/S7zaMuFaQw8?t=733
12:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> We have a everrede(SP) rotary head for a mill... Works similar. Used it quite a bit before we had cnc's..
12:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> http://www.lathes.co.uk/everede/
12:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I think we still have it..
12:35 PM Unterhausen: I was watching shop organization videos and the only ones that are worthwhile are from Adam Savage
12:36 PM Unterhausen: he's the only person on youtube with a shop that's messier than mine
12:36 PM roycroft: adam has too much stuff
12:36 PM roycroft: that's his problem
12:36 PM Unterhausen: also, he's one of the few people with a small shop that combines machine tools and woodworking
12:37 PM Unterhausen: I definitely have too much stuff, but getting rid of it is a lot of work
12:38 PM Unterhausen: I keep striking out on giving stuff away on buy nothing
12:39 PM roycroft: i have a small shop that combines machining and woodworking, and i have too much stuff
12:39 PM roycroft: but not nearly as much stuff as adam, and i'm not on youtube
12:39 PM roycroft: his shop is also a lot bigger than mine
12:39 PM Unterhausen: I have 3 shops, so maybe I have as much space as him
12:39 PM roycroft: if my shop were the size of his i'm pretty sure i'd have as much stuff as he does
12:39 PM Unterhausen: but all the machines are in a fairly small room
12:41 PM Unterhausen: I raided the junkpile to made drawer shelves for my parts organizers.
12:41 PM Unterhausen: I maybe could have gone to a sheet metal place like Adam did, but this was better
12:52 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.imgur.com/ey5VtXu.jpg tilt bed pickups are good to around 7-8 tons, I slid this down and used skates to push it in the corner https://i.imgur.com/CvsLnS6.jpg
12:54 PM roycroft: i'm not really interested in a tilt bed pickup, but if i got a good deal i'd get a lift gate for my pickup for sure
12:55 PM roycroft: the problem is that an f350 pickup bed is wider than most, and it's hard finding a used lift gate that fits
12:55 PM roycroft: if it were an f150 or a half-ton chevy or dodge, i'd be able to find a used lift gate for <$1k easily
12:56 PM roycroft: a new one is close to $4k, and that's not an investment i'm willing to make right now
01:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> dad had quite a few machined hauled on flat beds..
01:54 PM roycroft: there are hitch-mount lift gates available
01:54 PM roycroft: those can be a bit less expensive than a tommygate, and have the advantage of being easily installed/removed
01:55 PM roycroft: but it seems the could be a bit wobbly, compared to a bed-mounted lift gate
02:12 PM sensille: would it be hard to add a circular probing move?
02:13 PM sensille: G38, but with circles/arcs
02:24 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> curious... in what context? i can picture a 8-point star for good center-finding...
02:26 PM sensille: i built a script to scan the circumference of odd-shaped objects, using circular probing. but i have to emulate is with lines, which is slow
02:27 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i think G-code only provides straight-line probing
02:27 PM sensille: right
02:28 PM sensille: it is more of a dev question, how hard it would be to add that capability to lcnc
02:28 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> oh, i see now
02:39 PM Tom_shop: sensille, these probe the 4 quadrants but work http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cradek/
02:52 PM Tom_shop is now known as Tom_L
02:52 PM Tom_L: for ID anyway
02:52 PM sensille: my script emits a point cloud that can be used in cad to reconstruct the shape
02:52 PM Tom_L: probing an OD would be a bit more difficult since the D isn't given
02:52 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure how CMM do it but they have part models to follow i believe
03:20 PM roycroft: how can you mountain bike when all you have back east are hills? :)
03:21 PM XXCoder: hill bike dont sound so cool
03:31 PM roycroft: or "bump bike"
03:31 PM XXCoder: molehill bike
03:41 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i kinda thought mt washington was a pretty big mountain...
03:45 PM roycroft: it's the tallest peak east of the mississippi
03:45 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> and i rode down it 😛
03:45 PM roycroft: but my own state alone has over 40 mountains that are taller than mount washington
03:46 PM roycroft: and the big west coast mountains are in california
03:46 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> and you also have a ton of trumpers... so there's that 😛
03:46 PM roycroft: and the rocky mountain states have many taller mountains than we have here in oregon
03:46 PM roycroft: yeah, but there's that just about everywhere in this country
03:47 PM roycroft: and we've never had a governor lepage :)
03:48 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> just because your mountains are bigger, doesn't mean better. ours are the first to see the sun in the morning
03:48 PM roycroft: i never said they are better
03:48 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> lepage was run out of maine
03:49 PM roycroft: and i'm not sure where mount washington ranks in prominence
03:49 PM roycroft: well, he was term limited out
03:49 PM roycroft: but replaced by a democrat
03:49 PM roycroft: y'all figured it out :)
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> no he was not, he was voted out on his second term
03:50 PM XXCoder: wow! someone found the orginal star trek ship model
03:50 PM XXCoder: its back to gene's son
03:50 PM XXCoder: lost since 1979
03:52 PM roycroft: mount washington is not on the list of the 100 most promiment peaks in north america, but neither is any peak in oregon
03:52 PM roycroft: most of the prominent peaks are in alaska and colorado
03:53 PM roycroft: no, travis_farmer - he won twice, was termi-limited, sat out a term, and then ran again and lost bigly in 2022
03:54 PM roycroft: he ran and won in 2010 and 2014, and thus was not eligible to run in 2018
03:56 PM XXCoder: pics https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/20/arts/television/star-trek-enterprise-model-found.html?unlocked_article_code=1.mU0.eofU.FpyORmD1RmGk&smid=url-share
03:59 PM XXCoder: more pics https://www.therpf.com/forums/threads/red-alert-lost-3-ft-tos-enterprise-found.354596/
03:59 PM XXCoder: wow
04:22 PM XXCoder: roy did you see the news?
04:22 PM XXCoder: my links
04:23 PM CloudEvil: Oh, a model.
04:23 PM XXCoder: yep. the first.
04:23 PM XXCoder: it was wood model they used to test and approve before making 11 footer
04:24 PM XXCoder: its the model you saw kirk spock and others hold in pictures
04:24 PM XXCoder: it was gene personal owned model afterwards, then he loaned it. someone simply stole it and it disappeared for decades
04:25 PM XXCoder: its been returned to gene's son now
04:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Hmm.. did dad buy a 1" impact gun?
04:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> At what point do I quit looking?
04:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I have a vague recollection that he did...
04:32 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> Hmmm, according to google, maine has the longest town name with no hyphens or spaces... and i have fished the lake there... interesting
04:33 PM roycroft: perhaps in the usa or north america
04:33 PM roycroft: i suspect there are towns with longer names in wales
04:33 PM roycroft: but perhaps there's a welsh influence in maine
04:33 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> yes
04:33 PM Loetmichel: skunkworks8841: does he have the wrists to use that thing? i mean i made a few 1" drive sockets into tulips but that needed a 12 foot tube on the ratchet.
04:34 PM Loetmichel: and 4 persons
04:34 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> native american named, Mooselookmeguntic
04:35 PM roycroft: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu is the longest place name in the world
04:35 PM roycroft: it's a hill in new zealand
04:35 PM roycroft: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is the second longest - a town in wales
04:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I have a 1942 pickup he bought.. duellies in the back.. the nuts are 1-1/2"
04:45 PM Tom_L: what nonsense are we discussing today?
04:48 PM JT-Shop: that's not really a name but rather a description of the hill
04:49 PM Loetmichel: skunkworks: i broke a few sockets on that beast: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=3527&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
04:50 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, no updates today?
04:50 PM Loetmichel: those wheels were on there for at least a decade. rusted solid :D
04:51 PM JT-Shop: fixing a baler that the professionals screwed up... it's got a short no shit you wired the hot to the neutral twice
04:51 PM Tom_L: heh
04:51 PM Loetmichel: JT-Shop: "professionals"
04:56 PM JT-Shop: probably union professionals as they kept telling the farmer can't can't can't can't
04:56 PM JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/S7zaMuFaQw8?t=960
04:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Loetmichel: cool!
04:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/lHMThvQJpKfaAgGnvcbtePdH/PXL_20240321_234856574.jpg
05:06 PM * roycroft watched a video on the chicago three-way last night (it was about electricity, not that other stuff)
05:06 PM roycroft: scary that
05:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> hmm - speaking of electicity.. I have some 220 to 600v matched transformers.. I wonder how many kw I could run down 12awg...
05:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> 😉
06:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> also - I think I am going to sell the everede rotary head..
06:38 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
06:55 PM rdtsc: Tom_L are you tommylight on the forums?
06:58 PM rdtsc: man the forum software is quirky... can't even leave someone a message.
06:59 PM XXCoder: its also pretty old
06:59 PM Tom_L: no
06:59 PM XXCoder: its same from decade avgo
07:00 PM rdtsc: just heard a memory leak was found in glibc, spanning decades. php is exceptionally affected
07:00 PM XXCoder: php always sucks
07:01 PM rdtsc: by leak I mean buffer overflow = exploitable
07:01 PM XXCoder: its the English of programming languages. it steals many rulesets from other languages
07:01 PM XXCoder: yeah
07:01 PM XXCoder: this is still true. https://eev.ee/blog/2012/04/09/php-a-fractal-of-bad-design/
07:01 PM XXCoder: 2012 lol
07:02 PM rdtsc: it's insane that English uses Roman numerals... like they don't even fit at all.
07:02 PM rdtsc: numerals and characters
07:03 PM rdtsc: Using Roman characters in English would be like trying to write Russian using French characters... why?!?
07:04 PM rdtsc: Bernard Shaw saw this and proposed a fix in the early 60's... but alas, it never caught on. shavian.info
07:04 PM XXCoder: almost looks arabian
07:06 PM XXCoder: interesting but yeah I doubt I will learn that
07:06 PM rdtsc: Looks more than a little strange, but optimized for easy and fast handwriting. Each character is a part of English phonetics, so it ends up being about 20% shorter too.
07:07 PM rdtsc: No more I before E except after C... lol
07:07 PM XXCoder: lol
07:07 PM XXCoder: well it sounds like it'd be pretty easy if can hear
07:09 PM rdtsc: If we were taught that in school, would have saved a year or two. Then those students would look at English written in Roman and say bleeeech
07:10 PM rdtsc: Anyways, back to hammering away at the 7c80 config
07:10 PM XXCoder: fun
07:10 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> thats you on the fiorum trying to do the new config?
07:11 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> dont listen to these crotchety old boners, rpi is fine to run it
07:12 PM rdtsc: Finally got a servo to spin yesterday... had to physically invert step, dir, and enable... whew
07:12 PM rdtsc: Could do it in HAL with some inverters, but found that it slowed things down slightly. The Rpi4 can run this thing, but there isn't many free cycles left over
07:50 PM rdtsc: Found that setp hm2_7c80.0.stepgen.03.direction.invert_output TRUE will also invert those. Still using a 4.7k pullup on ENA to keep motor off while it boots up though. Satisfying to hit machine enable and it goes CLUNK
07:56 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> shit thats a good idea, im gonna do that with mine
07:56 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> the resistor
07:57 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> ahh dammit, i just did a board where i do that to the steppers , but it never oiccured to me to do it on my mesa cnc
08:23 PM pcw--home: rdtsc: the 7C80 has differential step/dir outputs so you can just choose the right polarity
09:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I have a couple rpi5 to play with.. Currenlty only played with one and that was with retropie
09:12 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
09:19 PM ziper2: has anyone here done investment casting with a 3d printed core?
09:19 PM XXCoder: nuclear core?
09:25 PM ziper2: I'm wondering if it is worth it to get special filaments
09:26 PM XXCoder: yeah dont know
09:26 PM XXCoder: casting wax looks expensive
09:26 PM XXCoder: theres lost pla casting but dunno if it would work
09:27 PM ziper2: yeah and the piece i'm thinking is fairly large in volume
09:27 PM ziper2: I'll just try and use a decent pla
10:12 PM roycroft: casting wax is expensive
10:13 PM * roycroft just moved his 3d printer to the new house, but it has no home there yet, and no network connection, so it is out of service for now
10:13 PM roycroft: same with the laser
10:35 PM XXCoder: what it dont even have sneakernet?
10:37 PM roycroft: i can plug a usb stick into either
10:45 PM XXCoder: lol
11:06 PM roycroft: i really don't have time for any shop work that is not related to the new house right now anyway
