01:24 AM lcnc-relay: <zmrdko (@_discord_397707718582075420:jauriarts.org)> Hello, i have question regarding overtravel detection. If I am not mistaken or missing something, linuxcnc detects overtravel movement just when it is about to execute it. Which is not very helpful in the middle of the running nc program. Is it possible to detect it upfront and dont allow running it, if there is overtravel?
01:37 AM Deejay: moin
02:26 AM mrec: 6/join #linuxcnc
02:26 AM mrec: ups
02:27 AM mrec: I have this meldas m60 system here with a HA100NC-S motor, it seems to have a problem at around the same degree if I jog the axis. Now I wonder what the problem could be, encoder problem or setup problem.
02:27 AM mrec: I tried to turn the shaft manually I don't feel any obstacle there
02:28 AM mrec: next I should disconnect the motor from the crosstable I guess..
02:28 AM XXCoder: I know some 4th axis have limited range, and some can rotate infinitely
02:28 AM XXCoder: you sure its not set to range in lcnc config?
02:31 AM mrec: the machine does not run linuxcnc yet (that's the next plan but first I have to get the motors work properly)
02:31 AM XXCoder: ahh ok. dunno then
02:32 AM mrec: https://s3.amazonaws.com/i.snag.gy/y2upaV.jpg
02:32 AM mrec: does anyone have an idea how to disconnect this joint?
02:32 AM mrec: I don't want to wildly pull screws there
02:35 AM mrec: I guess the front 4 screws have to be removed, the disc is held together by 4 bolts, the smaller front bolts clamp the shaft to the disc joint?
03:49 AM mrec: ok I removed the encoder, I will test it in my lab seems like there's dust on the encoder disc
03:49 AM mrec: that would align with the error message from the meldas system that there's a detector error..
03:50 AM mrec: X / Y of that machine doesn't work. Y is oscillating quickly
03:50 AM mrec: I checked the ballscrew is 100% oil free and a little bit rusty
03:50 AM mrec: seems like the oil pump doesn't work properly
03:51 AM mrec: that machine was standing there for 2 years, and the operator before didn't bother about the machine either
03:51 AM mrec: once X / Y work properly I will capture the protocol and interface it with the mesa card
03:52 AM mrec: little bit reverse engineering but I want this machine back to life
04:50 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:20 AM Tom_L: morning
06:32 AM JT-Cave: wife saw how much candy I bought for the parade and said you bought too much... ran out halfway
06:33 AM mrec: https://s3.amazonaws.com/i.snag.gy/q6fUHK.jpg
06:33 AM mrec: https://s3.amazonaws.com/i.snag.gy/7Vthus.jpg
06:33 AM mrec: seems like some liquid damage on the encoder
06:34 AM mrec: any suggestion how to clean such an encoder disc?
06:35 AM JT-Cave: no ideas here
06:36 AM mrec: AI proposed isopropyl alcohol.. I don't have any here, need to check the drugstore nearby
07:30 AM mrec: got it and cleaned it, I'm curious if it will work tomorrow
07:30 AM mrec: afterwards it's time to jump to the X axis
07:30 AM mrec: ups Y axis, that encoder is for the X axis
09:50 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, you can never have too much candy
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i love candy 😉

01:01 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i updated my ui a bit for those changes
01:01 PM JT-Shop: ok, I updated the examples as well
01:01 PM Tom_L: saw that
01:03 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
01:03 PM Tom_L: 2 wk leadtime on the dryer.. maybe that'll give me time to clean out the vent
01:04 PM JT-Shop: clothes dryer?
01:04 PM Tom_L: yeah, got a new set yesterday
01:04 PM Tom_L: the washer was getting pretty worn out
01:05 PM Tom_L: i'll keep using the old dryer until they deliver the new one
01:05 PM JT-Shop: we got a new set a few years ago
01:06 PM Tom_L: i went commercial this time. tired of fixing/replacing box store variants
01:07 PM Tom_L: alot heavier for sure
01:12 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
01:28 PM rdtsc: Recently got a new set as well. Dumb gas dryer just wasn't getting hot enough, despite all sensors measuring ok and replacing the thermistor. Put it on the curb with a big "FREE! works, not very hot" sign and it was gone the next day. Didn't think of going commercial - that would be the way to go for sure.
01:29 PM Tom_L: costs a bit more but over time i believe it's cheaper
01:30 PM Tom_L: both come with a 5 yr parts/labor warranty
01:30 PM rdtsc: Have a newer Samsung fridge... about 2 years old. Icemaker "went out" 6mos in; replaced it. That one went out 6mos later. Now using ice cube trays. Good model, just terrible icemaker.
01:30 PM Tom_L: the drive shaft on the washer was ~2x the diameter of the current one
01:33 PM rdtsc: Wash the whole house's laundry in one go? ;)
01:44 PM CaptHindsight: are they offering any major appliances made from paper yet? They are currently just a hair thinner than foil now
01:57 PM XXCoder: looks like frank howarth had fun
01:59 PM XXCoder: scrapping wood and turning em into either future projects or firewood

02:02 PM roycroft: well i am finally ready to start taping walls and covering screw holes
02:02 PM roycroft: where i was supposed to be two weeks ago
02:05 PM roycroft: but two weeks ago i was not planning on doing this much electrical work
02:13 PM XXCoder: unexpected fun
02:17 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> had yet another guy stand me up on showing up to look at my camper i am selling... really burns me up!

03:09 PM lcnc-relay: <jpmoniz> Hey all. Setting up a new machine. Using 2.9.0. The machine is a fixed gantry with dual z motors. Using a 7I96S. Have all motors wired correctly and can jog. XYZ. The problem being the gantry configuration via pnc. I setup the 3rd channel Stepgen as a tandem z axis but it will not turn. Is this normal? I know the motor and driver are working as if I set the 3rd step gen as the main z axis it works fine. Is there a trick setting up...
03:09 PM lcnc-relay: ... gantry using pnc.
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> jpmoniz: pnc and the like do not setup everything. also, they don't and can't cover all configurations. good for a start, but then you must RTFM and customize your configuration.
03:36 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <jpmoniz> Pretty sure the intent of the configurator was to achieve that was it not. Just thought I’d ask. Running twin motors on one axis is far from custom.
03:38 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> pnc may handle gantry with 2 mtrs on an axis. not sure. give it a try, then carefully review it in an editor. I think there is an example config for a gantry style machine
03:38 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> check 'em out.
03:39 PM JT-Shop: well Mesa CT can make any type of multiple motor gantry
03:39 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> jpmoniz: there ya go. use JT's configurator.....
03:40 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> the pnc author is cool, but he doesn't show up here very often. he does watch the forum closely
03:47 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Shop: hey JT. are the 7i97's in stock ??
03:47 PM lcnc-relay: <jpmoniz> Thanks. Haven’t used it yet. Will give it a try. Lost track with what’s considered current state tools. Was thinking pnc is still being maintained. Thought it might be a bug.
03:58 PM JT-Shop: the 7i97T is out of stock at the moment, I need to check on them
03:58 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ok
04:00 PM JT-Shop: the 7i77 is in stock
04:08 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Shop: well, I'm giving my BP series ii back to it's owner, and he wants to set it up with a 7i97... no hurry though.
04:08 PM JT-Shop: ok
04:08 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> gotta find someone to move the mill. it's 5500 lb.
04:09 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> not small.
04:09 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> somebody with a strong back
04:09 PM JT-Shop: I moved heavier machines with come alongs and jacks
04:09 PM JT-Shop: a toe jack is nice to have
04:09 PM JT-Shop: but not necessary
04:09 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> gotta be able to get it up onto a truck or trailor
04:10 PM JT-Shop: have you seen my photos of unloading the VMC and the CHNC?
04:10 PM JT-Shop: jacks, come alongs and brains is all it takes
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> rental yard has a trailer, but won't let me pull it with my truck, F150. so I would have to rent a bigger truck too.
04:11 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> i've designed an A-frame, but it's just scary.
04:11 PM JT-Shop: to lift it?
04:11 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> yes
04:12 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> he has a 5ton chain fall, but I need a sky hook....
04:12 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/shop/unload-308/unload-308.xhtml
04:12 PM lcnc-relay: <jpmoniz> Figured out the issue. Pnc maps the joint of properly. It’s the GUI that fails to add the extra functionality for the secondary joint. If I use axis gui all works as expected.
04:12 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/shop/hardinge/hardinge-gallery.xhtml
04:13 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Shop: that has a big enough base and you have a JohnDeer to pull it....
04:14 PM JT-Shop: I used the hoe as a place to tie to
04:14 PM JT-Shop: I didn't pull anything with the hoe
04:14 PM JT-Shop: I could have used my truck or a tree but the hoe was handy
04:15 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> the BP base is pretty small. I moved it out of the garage no 3/4" round bars, with a pry bar, just like the Eqgyptions do
04:15 PM JT-Shop: move my bp knee mill the same way
04:15 PM JT-Shop: with everything as low as possible to make the cg low
04:16 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/rrLcAngVUMxDnlPvCvfsdxTq/20240418_114649.jpg
04:17 PM JT-Shop: does the head swivel left or right?
04:17 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> had to pull the motor off the top. about 80# of iron and copper.
04:17 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> yes, but not much.
04:18 PM JT-Shop: the series 1 will spin all the way around
04:18 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> way different machines. this was originally a tape drive CNC with big steppers
04:19 PM JT-Shop: mine has big dc servos
04:19 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> knee is so big and heavy there is a pneumatic lift in it. with out that ya can't lift it.
04:19 PM JT-Shop: lower part is similar to mine
04:20 PM JT-Shop: except mine is slimmer :)
04:20 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> we put pretty good size dc brush motors that came off old computer tape drives....
04:20 PM JT-Shop: with the heavy lower the cg will be better
04:20 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> yeah, cg is not too high.
04:21 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
04:21 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I can build an A-frame to hang the chain fall on, i'm just most concerned about towing on the freeway.
04:22 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> slow and steady...
04:22 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> right now i'd rather just write a check and let some else be responsible.
04:22 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> travis_farmer: it's all the dumb shits out there....
04:22 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
04:22 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> yeah, i know
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i can sell you a 5th wheel camper to move it into to tow it... 😉
04:25 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> i brought it to my place on a tandom axel car carrier. but now,the frickin rental places want to know what is being carried...
04:25 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> they can't even think for themselves anymore..... well the computer says you can't do that
04:26 PM JT-Shop: tell them you are moving a dog house
04:26 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> my camper is good for 7K, supposedly 😉
04:26 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> fracking idiots.
04:26 PM JT-Shop: or even better a chicken coop
04:27 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I may be forced to do it myself, but i'd rather not.
04:27 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> all due to insurance
04:27 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Shop: hey, listening to Blue Man Group "Chicken Dance"
04:28 PM JT-Shop: LOL
04:28 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> love blue man group: the forge

07:15 PM rdtsc: JT, are the Rpi4 images of mesact working? Getting a 404 here. https://github.com/jethornton/mesact1/releases/download/2.1.2/mesact_2.1.2_arm64.deb
07:24 PM rdtsc: Aaaah, JT the link at https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/mesact/install.html points to msact1 - it needs to be mesact2
07:33 PM Tom_L: rdtsc, https://github.com/jethornton/mesact/releases
07:33 PM Tom_L: 64 or 32 bit?
07:34 PM rdtsc: That's really weird... looked at that page before and it was version at version 1.2 hmmm bet that was for mesact 1, not 2
07:35 PM rdtsc: Got it installed and updated... no 7C80 support, darn
07:36 PM Tom_L: iirc, pcw--home said something about using a different card to configure then rename the pins but you'd have to ask him about that
07:37 PM Tom_L: i'm not super clear on that
07:37 PM rdtsc: Yeah, the 7i92 I think. But the 7c80 is quite a bit different, will still have a play at it.
07:38 PM Tom_L: the 7c80 is spi interface isn't it?
07:38 PM Tom_L: i don't remember
07:38 PM rdtsc: yeah
07:38 PM rdtsc: rt_rpspi
07:38 PM Tom_L: load the hm2 spi driver for it
07:38 PM Tom_L: along with the base hm2 driver
07:40 PM Tom_L: i tested spi on a 7i90 board long time ago
07:41 PM rdtsc: Been working with a 7i92 config created from PNCconf. Have it starting without error and the e-stop and enable working. The GUI (qtdragon) isn't super happy about homing and probe though. Building/debugging is challenging.
07:41 PM Tom_L: that gui may be a bit sluggish on the rpi4
07:42 PM rdtsc: It seems to be ok surprisingly. I'd know more if I could get it to actually home and accept MDI though.
07:44 PM Tom_L: i'd get it working with axis... it's pretty bulletproof then make gui changes if you want
07:45 PM rdtsc: Gonna try that with Mesact / 7i92 and see how that goes
07:46 PM Tom_L: ethernet works pretty good on the rpi too
07:46 PM Tom_L: if you had a 7i92 to use
08:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I agree with Tom...
