12:54 AM Deejay: moin
01:19 AM * CaptHindsight raises hands and says "ooh ooh I might know"
01:27 AM CaptHindsight: rue_mohr: https://bearingsdirect.com/ measure id, od and the thickness
02:21 AM jpa-: https://bearingsdirect.com/62-28zz-odd-size-ball-bearing-28x58x16mm-shielded/ heh, they are even sold as "odd size"
04:31 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:31 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> Morning
04:58 AM Deejay: good day
06:23 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:26 AM Tom_L: going to a kid breakfast this morning
06:27 AM JT-Cave: what's that?
06:27 AM Tom_L: they've been excited the whole trip
06:27 AM Tom_L: a Dr Seuss theme
06:28 AM Tom_L: green eggs n ham....
06:28 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> lol
06:30 AM Tom_L: I may opt for waffles...
06:31 AM JT-Cave: get a photo of that lol
06:31 AM Tom_L: get any more done with flex?
06:33 AM Tom_L: morning
06:33 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:33 AM Tom_L: been a windy trip but still relaxing
06:33 AM JT-Cave: nice
06:33 AM Tom_L: Git says no
06:33 AM Tom_L: sun is starting to come up
06:35 AM Tom_L: They did a build a bear yesterday
06:36 AM Tom_L: They lost power in the middle of one of the shows last night
06:36 AM Tom_L: Just in the theater
06:37 AM Tom_L: The performers weren't quite sure what to do
06:39 AM rue_mohr: Tom_L, !
06:39 AM Tom_L: You're awake
06:40 AM rue_mohr: yup
06:41 AM rue_mohr: I got worried for a bit there :]
06:41 AM Tom_L: I'm in the middle of the gulf
06:41 AM rue_mohr: thats a trip
06:41 AM Tom_L: I figured you might call
06:42 AM rue_mohr: hah, I'm on a severe 'back off' since that last inncodent :]
06:42 AM Tom_L: :)
06:42 AM rue_mohr: I'm just worried everyone I knows gonna die and I wont know
06:42 AM Tom_L: It would go to voicemail anyway
06:43 AM Tom_L: You worry too much
06:44 AM Tom_L: Although after green eggs and ham who knows
06:45 AM Tom_L: Right now just sitting here watching the sunrise
06:46 AM rue_mohr: cool, did you catch the eclipse then?
06:46 AM Tom_L: no, it was cloudy
06:49 AM rue_mohr: hmm
07:04 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:26 AM sensille: Loetmichel: i have a 32mm endmill. do you think i can use it to facemill hardwood on my 6040?
07:38 AM rue_mohr: hss or carbide?
07:41 AM jpa-: sensille: sounds like it will probably work, if the spindle can run with reasonable torque at e.g. 8000 RPM
07:43 AM sensille: rue_mohr: cheap china from amazon. so maybe weak HSS :)
07:44 AM jpa-: i think you'll get best results by running unidirectional passes in Y direction, i.e. the gantry moves; even though it will flex more that way, the flex will not show up as staircase pattern in result so easily
07:44 AM sensille: jpa-: it is an 800w 24k spindle, so probly not that much torque. maybe with .2mm stepdown or less?
07:45 AM sensille: and it is just for a rough passes
07:45 AM jpa-: i have 800W 24k spindle from vevor, ran 16 mm router bit in plywood the other day at 12 kRPM and 5mm stepdown; it worked quite well
07:45 AM jpa-: i think you can go with 1 mm stepdown for 32mm without much problems
07:46 AM jpa-: though the thinner the less flex and the better result
07:47 AM sensille: at 8k RPM?
07:47 AM jpa-: yeah, i wouldn't run a random 32 mm endmill faster than 8kRPM
07:48 AM jpa-: and this style of spindles tend to lose torque & overheat when you run them slower than that
07:50 AM CaptHindsight: how about an 8mm endmill at 32k RPM?
07:55 AM jpa-: CaptHindsight: i think the forces and vibrations increase by 4x for every 2x increase in RPM, and only by 2x for 2x increase in diameter; so 8mm & 16kRPM would be a closer match
07:56 AM jpa-: and yeah, that sounds a reasonable RPM for 8 mm endmill in wood, at least for 1- or 2-flute ones that evacuate chips well
07:56 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> isn't there a point in RPM where it stops cutting and just burns?
07:57 AM jpa-: if the feed is too slow, yes; though i feel that it is more of a problem in softwoods than hardwoods, because you don't get as much rubbing with hardwoods
07:57 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> hmm, true point
07:59 AM jpa-: dull endmills heat up fast in wood, but only way to avoid that is to have a sharp endmill.. no speed & feed seems to fix dull endmill with flexible materials like wood or plastic
08:20 AM sensille: hm, yes, at what feed. 6000mm/min might already be too fast
08:23 AM jpa-: i'd start with 1000mm/min and adjust based on how it seems to be going
09:12 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i just love when regular mail shows up early, and priority mail is late... (sarcasm) seems a little ironic, really.
09:12 AM lcnc-relay: ordered some cheap hard-drives for a PFsense firewall/router build... they are coming priority mail and were supposed to be delivered today...
09:20 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> Hmmm... opened a box and the hard-drives were in it... something else priority mail was supposed to arrive, but didn't...
10:58 AM JT-Cave: hmm the windblows 7 pc down here is working again... it's been broke for months
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Cave: go back to NT
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> was the best.
11:06 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> WFW v3.11
11:07 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> doing the good old windows update for 3 computers....
11:07 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> PITA
11:08 AM JT-Shop: I have XT but you can't install it any more, not sure if I have a NT set of disks
11:08 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> just teasing.... but I'm pretty sure I have CDs for all of 'em
11:10 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> 7 is ok.
11:10 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> 98 SE, lol
11:13 AM JT-Cave: I have 3.11
11:14 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Cave: what ya need Windows for????
11:16 AM JT-Cave: chicken spreadsheet
11:16 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> so ya need excel ???
11:17 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> LibreOffice has some spreadsheet, right?
11:17 AM JT-Cave: yup, I started it in excel
11:17 AM JT-Cave: also plc programming software only runs in windblows
11:18 AM roycroft: yes, libre-office has a spreadsheet, and it actually works really well
11:18 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Ah, the PLC stuff. check what OS it needs. there are places on the web to get any software ya could want
11:19 AM roycroft: it doesn't support visual basic, but it's otherwise quite capable and compatible with excel
11:20 AM roycroft: i have excel, but only use it on my cad workstation when i'm doing tables in solidworks, because sw doesn't support libreoffice
11:20 AM roycroft: otherwise i use libreoffice spreadsheet exclusively
11:20 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i use libre-office in both winblows and Linux
11:21 AM roycroft: i use it on my macs as well
11:22 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> it has GPG encryption in it 🙂
11:22 AM JT-Cave: I find libreoffice calc cumbersome to use compared to excel
11:22 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Cave: when do you need an OS ?
11:23 AM JT-Cave: ??
11:23 AM roycroft: when did you last use libreoffice calc?
11:23 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I could send you a cd of 7, but it would take a while to get it
11:24 AM JT-Cave: I used it in debian 12
11:24 AM roycroft: that's fairly recent
11:24 AM roycroft: although i have no idea what version ships with debian 12
11:24 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Cave: which Win OS do you want ????
11:25 AM JT-Cave: libreoffice is version 7.4.7.2
11:25 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> could maybe put it up on a cloud drive somewhere....
11:25 AM JT-Cave: I don't need any windblows os, I'm fine with what I have
11:25 AM JT-Cave: thanks for the offer
11:26 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ok, cool
11:26 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> don't hesitate to ask if you do.....
11:26 AM JT-Cave: ok will do
11:26 AM JT-Cave: lunch is done
11:26 AM * JT-Cave hears a nap calling his name
11:27 AM roycroft: i ordered a bathroom sink through amazon marketplace
11:27 AM roycroft: it arrived with a big chip in the side of it
11:27 AM roycroft: so i returned it
11:27 AM roycroft: the vendor is disputing my return now, saying that it must be returned in brand new, unused condition to be eligible for a refund
11:28 AM roycroft: the return reason was that it was damaged
11:28 AM roycroft: interesting way to run a business
11:29 AM roycroft: jt-cave: if you've not gone for your nap yet, i have an electrical question
11:30 AM roycroft: in my new house, the service panel is made by long-defunct gould
11:30 AM roycroft: a number of other manufacturers' breakers physically fit in the panel
11:30 AM roycroft: how do i determine the correct ones to use?
11:30 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> get a new panel
11:31 AM roycroft: that would be a major job, and would require upgrading the electricity in the entire building to bring it up to modern code
11:31 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ouch
11:31 AM JT-Cave: get a new panel
11:31 AM roycroft: it's the main panel for the house
11:32 AM roycroft: i'd have to get the power company involved, to shut off the mains while i install the new panel
11:32 AM roycroft: and as i said, i'd have to bring the entire house up to modern code before it would pass inspection
11:32 AM roycroft: i plan on doing that, over time
11:32 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I upsized and upgraded my panel when I got my house. had to get permits so the power company would install a new meter. but didn't have to upgrade the whole house.
11:32 AM JT-Cave: I just pull the meter half way out in the past but now I have a disconnect for everything
11:33 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> get a transfer switch installed then you can shut of mains yourself afterward 😉
11:33 AM roycroft: i need to add two sub panels
11:33 AM JT-Cave: I would not worry about the panel if it is not broken
11:33 AM roycroft: but i don't want to touch the main panel
11:33 AM roycroft: i just want to add breakers for the sub panels
11:34 AM roycroft: also, i want to pull the 20a breakers that someone installed and connected 14ga wire to and replace them with 15a breakers
11:34 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I actually ran a few days with not meter..... and hooked up the lines from the street myself. with permission from PG&E
11:34 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> oh lord
11:34 AM JT-Cave: you might try ebay to find the breakers
11:34 AM roycroft: there are a number of modern breakers that claim to be compatible
11:34 AM JT-Cave: that's out of my expertise level
11:34 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> home-depot still sells non AF breakers i think
11:35 AM roycroft: i was looking at some siemens at a home improvement store yesterday that would fit perfectly
11:35 AM JT-Cave: if they fit and work then it should be fine
11:35 AM roycroft: that's kind of what i think
11:35 AM JT-Cave: it's not that complicated
11:35 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> yup
11:35 AM roycroft: but then i look at the offerings in the stores
11:35 AM roycroft: and they have "economy", "standard", and "premium" breakers that all have the same physical dimensions
11:35 AM roycroft: but vastly differing prices
11:36 AM JT-Cave: sounds like a money maker thing
11:36 AM roycroft: probably
11:36 AM roycroft: although the higher-priced ones may have a higher arc rating and highr cycle life
11:36 AM JT-Cave: I use only square d homeline for homes and square d for industrial and they only have one grade of breaker
11:36 AM roycroft: i don't tend to turn breakers on and off frequently, nor overload them so that they trip
11:36 AM JT-Cave: that could be
11:37 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> there are some pretty fancy breakers now. sort of programmable....
11:37 AM JT-Cave: it's really nap time now :)
11:37 AM roycroft: also, my house has no gfci receptacles
11:37 AM roycroft: i'm probably going to replace the bathroom and kitchen circuit breakers with gfci breakers
11:37 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> 2-prong or 3-prong outlets?
11:37 AM roycroft: they're all grounding receptacles
11:38 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> good
11:38 AM roycroft: the place was built in the '80s
11:38 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: if you need copies of the codes: https://public.resource.org/
11:38 AM roycroft: i have a recent nec book
11:39 AM roycroft: there are some significant changes this year, though
11:39 AM roycroft: most notably, code now allows 10a circuits with 16ga wire
11:39 AM roycroft: but only for lighting circuits
11:39 AM roycroft: nobody is making 10a breakers yet, but that will come soon, i'm sure
11:39 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> yeah, now that LEDs are popular
11:39 AM roycroft: yes, that's exactly why
11:40 AM roycroft: led lighting requires less current and pulling 16ga vs 14ga wire for lighting circuits can save a lot of money
11:40 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I wouldn't mess with that new stuff..... stay old fashioned
11:40 AM roycroft: i use what's appropriate
11:40 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> you're right. wire is fracking expensive new
11:40 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> now
11:40 AM roycroft: it is
11:41 AM roycroft: i'm looking at $130 for 250' of 12-2 nm
11:41 AM roycroft: that was about $65 not too long ago
11:41 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> and AF breakers are a menace to power tools
11:42 AM roycroft: i need to deal with the receptacles that are buzzing this weekend
11:42 AM roycroft: i dealt with them when i discovered the buzzing by turning off their breakers
11:42 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> yes, i would say so
11:42 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I found a metal scrap yard not too far away, that sell stuff contractors bring in for scrap money. the wire is like half retail price....
11:42 AM roycroft: i know exactly why they are buzzing
11:43 AM roycroft: they're the type where you push the wire in a little clip in the back instead of attaching it to a proper screw lug
11:43 AM roycroft: and they're 40 years old
11:43 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i hate those, right up there with wego terminals
11:44 AM * roycroft has an order in for enough commercial grade 20a receptalces to redo the whole house, plus add a few extra receptacles
11:44 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> nice
11:46 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> be careful where you install different types of outlets. several different types now.....
11:46 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i am looking forward to when i can wire my new shop... assuming i ever find the funding...
11:47 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> tamper resistant, arc fault, gfci, ..... wet area rated.... and probably more.....
11:47 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> sand plasted and painted the gauge cluster last night. Most of the gauges should be here today
11:52 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:53 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> copper is crazy right now. Trying to get a copper run to recycling..
11:58 AM roycroft: and we're past peak copper, so it's going to stay crazy forever
11:59 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I needed a short run of automotive #10 red. Finally figured out the local farm and barn store had 8 foot packages for 10 dollars.
12:01 PM roycroft: i don't have my commercial accounts at the local distributors any more, so i'm paying retail these days
12:01 PM roycroft: i should probably go reestablish my accounts
12:01 PM roycroft: i haven't used them in a long time, because oregon lowered the threshold for low voltage installs so that i now need a contractor's license to pull ethernet cables
12:02 PM roycroft: so i don't do that for money any more - i hire it out to a licensed contractor
12:03 PM roycroft: it used to be that <60 volts did not require a license
12:03 PM roycroft: now it's 30 or 35 volts, i think
12:03 PM roycroft: <48 for sure
12:04 PM roycroft: i can pull wires for a 12v 1000a circuit, but not for a 48v 50ma circuit
12:05 PM roycroft: actually, probably not the former - there is probably some power limit as well as the voltage limit

01:32 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> cool... my website SSL cert got an "A" on https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/index.html 🙂

02:11 PM Tom_L: JT-SHOP, I thought you fixed line hilite already
03:04 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L when you read back yes highlight line worked when running a program but I hadn't done highlight line when you click on a line
03:06 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:07 PM JT-Shop: <JT-Shop> Tom_L when you read back yes highlight line worked when running a program but I hadn't done highlight line when you click on a line
03:07 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, I see
03:07 PM Tom_L: I read the log...
03:09 PM Tom_L: One thing I haven't had to reset this trip
03:10 PM JT-Cave1: it's a miracle for sure
03:14 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> that fracking Biden keeps writing off student debts...... means we all pay the bill. if ya sign the contract, pay the bill like a responsible adult.
03:18 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:18 PM JT-Shop: they sure love to give money away
03:19 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> our money.....
03:20 PM roycroft: that fracking 45 kept giving tax breaks to the wealthy ... means we all pay the bill. if ya make money on the backs of workers, pay your fair share of taxes like a responsible adult.
03:20 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:21 PM JT-Shop: years where I made a lot I was happy to pay my fair share of taxes
03:22 PM Tom_L: My 2 are paying off theira
03:22 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I agree. I don't really mind paying taxes, as long as it's well spent, and I get my money's worth......
03:22 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> just not happening now....
03:22 PM Tom_L: Their's
03:24 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, is the cruse 7 days?
03:24 PM Tom_L: 5
03:24 PM Tom_L: driving home tomorrow
03:24 PM JT-Shop: heading back to port now?
03:24 PM XXCoder: man tacoma area must be really hard up for machinists now
03:24 PM Tom_L: We're in the middle of the gulf
03:25 PM Tom_L: Yes
03:25 PM XXCoder: been contacted by few reps so far in a week
03:25 PM JT-Shop: wow
03:25 PM roycroft: i'm just saying things aren't as black and white as folks like to make them out to be
03:25 PM XXCoder: too bad im retired due to health issues
03:25 PM roycroft: both of the main political parties love driving up the debt and blaming it on the other side
03:25 PM roycroft: they just do it in different ways
03:25 PM JT-Shop: any chance of regaining your health?
03:26 PM XXCoder: im improving a lot, but dizzynss and visual issues isnt going away, or even changing
03:26 PM Tom_L: Well I haven't really looked at the map but we left this morning
03:26 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> put it all on the national credit card.
03:26 PM XXCoder: finally exercing hard helps a lot. using the desk cycle thingy
03:26 PM JT-Shop: that's good
03:27 PM Tom_L: There's a shortage of good machinists here too
03:27 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> XXCoder: what the heck is up???
03:28 PM Tom_L: My kid is hoping his machine is still in one piece when it gets home
03:29 PM XXCoder: oh boy
03:29 PM JT-Shop: wife is moving around much better today
03:29 PM XXCoder: thats awesome
03:30 PM Tom_L: He's been in contact with them. And they are still running a part and should have taken one day
03:30 PM JT-Shop: she has not touched the walker today
03:30 PM JT-Shop: holy crap
03:30 PM JT-Shop: their better off just shutting it down while he's gone
03:30 PM Tom_L: big ti part
03:31 PM Tom_L: Very expensive too
03:31 PM JT-Shop: I want to go back to Ron Fellows and do Level 1
03:31 PM XXCoder: I hear that some shops is so had that I'd end up being head machinist even with my medicore skills
03:32 PM XXCoder: bad
03:32 PM Tom_L: You should
03:32 PM JT-Shop: they only have one or two level 1 courses per month
03:33 PM Tom_L: They wanted him to go to second shift but first won't let him go
03:33 PM XXCoder: golden machinist
03:34 PM Tom_L: for his age he is
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> the local high school had a metal shop, then about 10 years ago shut it down...... and then about 3 years ago started it back up..... finally realized everyone doesn't need to go to college.... duh
03:35 PM Tom_L: those are in higher demand right now
03:36 PM Tom_L: How much is the level one course
03:36 PM JT-Shop: $4k
03:36 PM Tom_L: Per?
03:36 PM JT-Shop: for the whole course and including lodging
03:37 PM Tom_L: Each...
03:37 PM JT-Shop: the course is 2 days long
03:37 PM JT-Shop: it's an extra $40 to bring a guest
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> excuse me, but course of what?
03:37 PM Tom_L: Doesn't sound too bad if you're still learning something
03:37 PM Tom_L: Is driving
03:37 PM Tom_L: Did I mention I hate auto correct
03:38 PM JT-Shop: I learned a lot in the COS course
03:38 PM XXCoder: course of dinner ;)
03:38 PM Tom_L: cool
03:38 PM Tom_L: She probably wouldn't be driving anyway , would she
03:39 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> oh, driving course...... that could be pretty fun
03:39 PM JT-Shop: no, but she gets to attend all the events except the track events
03:39 PM XXCoder: ya saw bits of jts video
03:39 PM XXCoder: interesting
03:39 PM Tom_L: Yeah
03:39 PM JT-Shop: and she gets to ride along with an instructor each day
03:39 PM XXCoder: couldnt watch much of it, as video type makes me literally sick by dizzyness
03:39 PM JT-Shop: she had a blast
03:39 PM Tom_L: As long as your back holds up
03:39 PM Tom_L: Her
03:40 PM JT-Shop: her back should be good to go after the healing is done
03:40 PM Tom_L: good
03:41 PM Tom_L: Only one other ship on the horizon now
03:41 PM Tom_L: I can tell you green eggs make you poop funny
03:41 PM Tom_L: :)
03:41 PM JT-Shop: when I worked in the gulf sometimes I was 200 miles out and you could not see any other rigs
03:42 PM JT-Shop: scrambled eggs?
03:42 PM Tom_L: I haven't been looking for oil rigs but i'm sure we passed some
03:42 PM Tom_L: Yeah
03:42 PM Tom_L: I got pics
03:43 PM JT-Shop: cool
03:43 PM XXCoder: they probably route so people dont see em
03:43 PM Tom_L: Just can't upload them here
03:43 PM Tom_L: Is the kids had a blast
03:45 PM Tom_L: Hopefully we'll be on the road by 8a m
03:46 PM JT-Shop: how long is the drive?
03:46 PM Tom_L: I think about ten hours
03:47 PM Tom_L: We'll be going through houston in russia , although
