12:56 AM Deejay: moin
04:06 AM Tom_L: morning
05:09 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:30 AM jfsimon1981_c is now known as jfsimon
06:55 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, did you see the debug switches? https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master/src/emc/nml_intf/debugflags.h
07:02 AM JT-Cave: yes, I have them in mesact
07:06 AM Tom_L: k
07:07 AM JT-Cave: odd I get different results when runnin flex with axis than I do running flex alone
07:07 AM Tom_L: some of it is probably handled by axis?
07:13 AM JT-Cave: dunno
07:16 AM Tom_L: write a program that turns the spindle on movex X & Y 1" then stops and compare the ouput
07:19 AM Tom_L: i shortened my test program to use for that
07:21 AM Tom_L: i'd compare all 3, axis, axis w flex, flex alone
07:41 AM JT-Cave: I'm exhausted this morning...
09:25 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> A lot of stress will do that.
09:54 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, take a break!
10:33 AM Unterhausen: if a surface mount power transistor says "k15" on it, what is the actual part number to search for?
10:37 AM Unterhausen: looks like TK15 is marked K15
10:43 AM Roguish: lololo New York city just had an earthquake. a 4.7 that'll wake 'em up.
10:48 AM Tom_L: :)
10:50 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> that seems bad for an area that doesn't build for eathquakes..
10:51 AM Roguish: it's just funny. they laugh at us out west.... just shows everywhere is susceptable
10:51 AM Roguish: once agian, proving that gravity works.
10:52 AM Tom_L: we've had a few where we used to never have them
11:35 AM lcnc-relay: <perry_j1987> 4.8 magnatude in NYC it says
11:40 AM bjorkintosh: wow. I didn't know that happened there.
11:44 AM roycroft: that's a puny earthquake by ring of fire standards, but it's HUUUUGE by east coast standards
11:49 AM Tom_L: the one in taiwan was worse
11:50 AM bjorkintosh: it never ever hits (and swallows) wallstreet.
11:50 AM bjorkintosh: Ever.
11:50 AM roycroft: much worse, but taiwan is in the ring of fire, and is used to large earthquakes
11:51 AM roycroft: or 56th and fifth avenue, bjorkintosh
12:21 PM Unterhausen: when we lived in Utah, they kept promising us a big earthquake, but we never had any. But there was a 3 down south and destroyed some houses
12:22 PM Unterhausen: I'm glad we never had any, our house was essentially built on sand
12:40 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> The New Madrid fault line is near here
12:43 PM bjorkintosh: doesn't sand absorb shock better?
12:43 PM Unterhausen: I think buildings on sand just slide around
12:43 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> The operative word is liquefaction.
12:43 PM Unterhausen: probably doesn't take as big of an earthquake to do damage
12:44 PM Unterhausen: having grown up in an area where the dirt is clay, it was strange digging in the yard
12:47 PM bjorkintosh: ah right. https://www.britannica.com/video/185615/liquefaction-event-soil-particles-earthquake-combination-water
01:14 PM lcnc-relay: <ranga> All depends on the standards of construction.
01:14 PM lcnc-relay: <ranga> I live on sand in a high quake area. My house sits on 2ft hemispheres rather than embedded piles.
01:18 PM Rhine_Labs: Long week..
01:21 PM bjorkintosh: hemispheres? concrete?
01:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> you guys don't have clay - do you? I had the diesel truck get stuck because it was idling in some damp clay. SLowly sinked in.
01:28 PM bjorkintosh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJqa6UGShls
01:59 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Wife is doing a lot better today might go home Sunday
02:02 PM bjorkintosh: fantastic!
02:03 PM XXCoder: awesome!
02:04 PM XXCoder: skunk here its 2 or 3 inch of soil then rocks all way down
02:05 PM Tom_L: they decided to do range burning today and it's blowing right into town. looks like the whole town is on fire
02:05 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Damn
02:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> we have mostly clay and sand stone
02:06 PM Tom_L: glad she's doing better
02:06 PM roycroft: oregon banned field burning about 20 years ago, after there was a huge wreck on i5 involving dozens of vehicles and multiple fatalities due to a field burn near the freeway
02:06 PM roycroft: we had been phasing it out already
02:06 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Rock, clay and dirt here
02:07 PM Tom_L: clay E of the river
02:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> we are in the coulees.. you go closer to the Mississippi - you get into sand. (river vally)
02:07 PM Tom_L: i got good top soil here
02:07 PM XXCoder: tacoma isnt too bad really, we have whole foot of soil in lots of places. vancouver though lol old home there had less than inch of soil
02:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> the bottom of the vallys have very good soil.. all from the run - off from the hills.
02:08 PM XXCoder: large area of wa was under freshwater huge lake, closed in by ice then ice dam broke
02:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> we are almost the lowest point for our area - dad created multiple catch basins - the have all filled in..
02:08 PM XXCoder: even very long time after, not much soil
02:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> We catch all the neighbors good soil run-off... lol
02:10 PM XXCoder: soil thevery lol
02:10 PM Tom_L: i have about 3' of topsoil then sand as you can see when they dug the basement: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/house/5.jpg
02:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/gQNnNLWqFtYajvRelOptGCIJ/PXL_20231026_215553749.jpg
02:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Tom_L. not like that around here..
02:12 PM Tom_L: not like that E of the river here either
02:12 PM Tom_L: turns to hard packed clay
02:13 PM XXCoder: lol would love to have land with river in it
02:13 PM XXCoder: i'd have fun with few projects
02:13 PM XXCoder: power gen and water pumping
02:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> that was run off..
02:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> from a storm
02:13 PM XXCoder: I know
02:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> ok.
02:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol
02:13 PM XXCoder: just commenting about river lol
02:14 PM XXCoder: its olviously runoff because grass goes all way into "river"
02:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I don't know - seems there are a lot of rules when water runs through your land..
02:14 PM XXCoder: life isnt bad game world ;)
02:15 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> We have a wet weather creek running through our property
02:16 PM XXCoder: nice
02:19 PM XXCoder: ugh. package I ordered went into usa at calfornia, then wa. normal progress. then it went to texas, stayed days. then "on transit"
02:19 PM XXCoder: hope it wasnt to NY
02:21 PM Tom_L: normally this is almost dry but during heavy rain it and the river fill up: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/Flood/Flood_canal2.jpg
02:21 PM Tom_L: flood canal
02:21 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/Flood/Flood_canal1.jpg
02:22 PM Tom_L: from that far bridge in the 1st one
02:22 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Tom_L: test
02:22 PM Tom_L: pass
02:22 PM XXCoder: looks like good planning
02:22 PM Tom_L: you got stuff to test?
02:22 PM Tom_L: i've seen it to the brim a couple times
02:24 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I've not worked on it today
02:24 PM Tom_L: wasn't sure what you meant by 'test'
02:27 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I've not worked on it today
02:27 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> No
02:30 PM Tom_L: stop looks better now
02:31 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Had to restart this
02:31 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Cool
02:31 PM Tom_L: end of program run is better too
02:32 PM Tom_L: pause still gets hung up on that Hword line
02:33 PM Tom_L: step i meant
02:34 PM Tom_L: resume after step doens't enable pause
02:36 PM Tom_L: on some lines anyway
02:36 PM Tom_L: works part of the time
02:39 PM Tom_L: it doesn't like something about that G54 G00 Z1.25 H45 line. sometimes it will resume and some times it won't
02:40 PM Tom_L: the current line yellow line works alot better now
04:39 PM Unterhausen: given the amount of water we had in our backyard, I'm surprised the usual suspects didn't flood this week
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> I need a motor expert.
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: I'm trying to retrofit a lathe rn and have some 3 phase AC motors that I need to run on split phase
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: One is the spindle motor, I know I need a VFD for that so we can ignore it
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: All of them are hooked to 3 phase mains
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: The first is a 2HP 1.5KW 5.9A 4 pole three phase motor
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: I found something that will drive it with this: https://www.amazon.com/Single-Converter-MY-PS-3-200-240V-Should/dp/B07F26M1TH
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> However, I noticed something odd
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: And I'm way more of a DC guy than AC guy so I was puzzled
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71V5axhm84L._AC_SL1500_.jpg
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> It shows the risk of running an undersized motor with this.
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: Ideally, this widget is approximating 220v 60hz 3 phase mains, so I was puzzled as to why this would overheat a smaller motor that by default is hooked to 220v 60hz 3 phase mains
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: This issue comes into play with the 2 other motors. One is a very small oil pump, the other is a larger coolant pump
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: The oil pump is a small 5W motor (220V, 0.145A, 4P).
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: The coolant pump is a 150W motor (220V, 1.09A, 2P).
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: When I looked at VFDs, I saw there was a limit to how low they would scale down
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> I'm worried that even small VFDs will cause these motors to overheat because I am fundamentally not understanding something about motors
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I am about 90% sure those are just phase converters.. (generates the 3rd phase using capasitors)
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> if you use real vfd's - that won't be a problem
06:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> if you don't size them correctly - they won't create the 3rd phase well and the motor will overheat
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> Because it will generate the 3rd phase for too long to where it is out of phase
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> So I just need micro VFDs
06:50 PM Roguish: VFDs need to be close to the motor size.....otherwise they will mess up, and get very expensive.
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> I'm not seeing any VFDs that really scale down to 150W or 5W
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> At least not on paper
06:52 PM Roguish: 150W is about 1/5 hp. pretty small motor
06:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> Any suggestions for running those motors?
06:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> I don't need any sort of smart control, they just need to run at straight 220V 60Hz 3 phase
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> Should I just use the capacitor trick to generate the 3rd phase?
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> that is probably what I would do.. Search for home made static phase converters
07:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> Cool, I'll look into it and see what I can do. Thanks!
07:01 PM Tom_L: get the right amount of capacitors
07:02 PM Tom_L: i know my bud did something similar to a phase inverter and had to adjust the caps
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skiboy> Yeah, I'll triple check the calculations
07:27 PM JT-Cave: wtf?
07:47 PM Tom_L: i'm doubting it myself
07:47 PM Tom_L: but it just hides your ip
07:47 PM Tom_L: which i don't care about anyway
07:53 PM roycroft: i think cloaking is harmful on a network like irc
07:53 PM roycroft: i know why people want to do it
07:53 PM roycroft: but i also know why other people want to do it
07:53 PM roycroft: and i worry about those people
08:28 PM bjorkintosh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLqSaEiXzIU
08:28 PM bjorkintosh: roycroft, why's it harmful?
08:29 PM XXCoder: saw that. pretty cool, though theres also that sls4all
08:30 PM XXCoder: nice andy video
08:31 PM XXCoder: sporting an xl now I see
08:33 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/Yg2oN_IKnqM
08:33 PM XXCoder: man it spinning loks so weird
08:43 PM skunkworks: did I miss something?
08:44 PM XXCoder: I linked to andy video, and bjork linked to another sls project and I talked about sls4all
08:44 PM skunkworks: wondering about the cloakign
08:45 PM XXCoder: ahh its automated now I guess but dont affect me much'
08:48 PM skunkworks: already static fired the next booster
08:53 PM skunkworks: that was awesome from andy
08:54 PM XXCoder: yeah
08:54 PM skunkworks: I just grabbed the 2 printers from the other house.. I was starting to miss them
09:17 PM roycroft: moving my main printer is not going to be fun
09:17 PM roycroft: i'm actually really glad that it threw an error a few weeks ago and i could not use it then
09:17 PM roycroft: because i went out and bought a cheap used laser printer from the goodwill to get me through the day
09:17 PM roycroft: when i move my office to the new house that printer will go with me
09:18 PM roycroft: and the other printer will move when i have the facilities to move it
09:18 PM roycroft: i actually use the scanner feature more than i print, and both machines have scanners with sheet feeders
09:44 PM * roycroft wonders why monday's eclipse is getting about 10x the press than the 2017 one did, when both were similar as total eclipses, and the 2017 one was able to be seen in totality by a much larger part of the country
09:51 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> because we have less to look forward to
09:51 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> than in 2017
09:59 PM roycroft: in 2017 i was looking forward to 2020
10:00 PM roycroft: in 2024 i'm looking forward to 2028
10:00 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> thats what i like about paralimint, you never know when its gonna happen
10:01 PM roycroft: well the fixed elections law in the uk made things a bit more predictable
10:01 PM roycroft: or at least a bit less unpredictable
10:02 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> i supose is probably gonna be at the end of cycle, but who knows? its anyones game with a minority government
10:02 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> , er coalition
10:03 PM roycroft: it would be a blowout if the election were today
10:03 PM roycroft: it's looking like the tories would only win 98 seats, while labor would get about 480
10:03 PM roycroft: and the election has to take place by the end of the year
10:03 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> a lot can happen by then
10:03 PM roycroft: yes
10:04 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> a lot of annoying nonesense
10:04 PM roycroft: things could get a lot worse and the tories could lose even more seats
10:04 PM roycroft: or labour could implode like usual and lose to the lib dems or something
10:05 PM roycroft: is that party even still around? :)
10:06 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> i prefer to spoil my ballot, or vote single issue parties, or default to voting for the guy with the last name poos
10:07 PM roycroft: it's possible that the snp could win more ridings than the tories
10:07 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> fuck so ackward, when you try to spoil your ballot, and it crashes the voting machine, and then soem voulenteer has to fill out all this paper work, and void a ballot, and then i have to revote
10:24 PM lcnc-relay: <ranga> vote not for the party that will benefit you the most, but the party that will benefit the most of you
10:24 PM lcnc-relay: <ranga> (spoiler: they are all full of self-interested pricks, so unless you're a normie from the upper class... none of them will benefit you)
10:27 PM * roycroft cannot decide whether to vote silly, or slightly silly
10:47 PM lcnc-relay: <ranga> vote for whichever party is promising to disestablish unelected representation
10:47 PM lcnc-relay: <ranga> oligarchies help nobody except their own bank accounts
