04:13 AM Tom_L: schoch, accel too high etc
04:13 AM Tom_L: morning
06:59 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> Morning
07:43 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/KCXeUVVgPNszFFOuaIvcKdyZ/20240318_144740.jpg
07:43 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Surfacing table top. 0.1" deep so far.
07:44 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Still not touching the lows. Who thought mdf without solid supports was a good idea
07:45 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> Mdf also swells with humidity
07:47 AM jpa-: might be worth adding some supports before cutting it all away :)
07:47 AM jpa-: but i have done the same in the past, didn't even bother trying to make it level
08:16 AM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/PibGgjfOlkTQHgPPsHrVuvIs/20240320_061457.jpg
08:40 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> Tom_L: can you explain how accel too high would exceed max_velocity ? which Max_velocity or max_acceleration setting wins?
08:41 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> velicity is machine units/second and accel is machine units/s/s correct?
08:49 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> also, how does stepgen_maxvel interact with all the other Max_velocities?
08:56 AM skunkwor1s: Tom_L: I was trying to figure out if I have any bulk carb cleaner - bit I don't think I do.
08:56 AM skunkwor1s: It doesn't seem that bad though - but a good loaking would be nice. The carb kit won't be here for a few days anyway
08:57 AM skunkwor1s: soaking
08:58 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> maybe AI documentation ain't a bad thing.... is this accurate? https://gist.github.com/jschoch/776b45ec1498fec6dc9facb128e22b09
09:00 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> sweet, gemini can product it's output as markdown
09:01 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> but is it making shit up?
09:01 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> it starts talking about angular velocity in the joint seciton
09:52 AM skunkwor1s is now known as skunkworks
09:52 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I guess the question is - how do you know that it is too high?
11:01 AM roycroft: happy equinox, folks
11:04 AM Rab: Same to you! Seems like it was just Solstice.
11:08 AM roycroft: so it does
11:08 AM roycroft: tempus fugit
11:25 AM Roguish: roycroft, have you started the move ????
11:28 AM roycroft: last weekend i installed a new door on the shop building and changed the locks
11:29 AM roycroft: i also hauled a pickup load of tools there
11:29 AM roycroft: this weekend i'll be painting all the ceilings
11:29 AM roycroft: i need to install a new floor in one of the bedrooms, and new walls and floor in the laundry room
11:29 AM roycroft: and then i need to paint all the walls
11:29 AM roycroft: then i can start moving in - probably in about a month
11:31 AM roycroft: i have some plumbing work to do in the laundry room as well, and i'll be installing my current kitchen sink and garbage disposal in the new place
11:31 AM Roguish: slow and easy.
11:32 AM roycroft: not necessarily easy, but i am trying to get a lot of work done on the new place before i move my stuff in
11:32 AM roycroft: i'm still undecided about when i'm going to raise the shop roof 2 feet
11:32 AM roycroft: it would be best to do it before i move in, but it's also a pretty big project
11:32 AM roycroft: and it might delay the move
11:33 AM roycroft: the shingles and roof decking are shot on the shop, so they need to be replaced
11:33 AM roycroft: if i pull all of that off then the lift will be a lot easier
11:33 AM Tom_L: schoch, i was thinking joint following errors sry
11:33 AM roycroft: i'll save probably 2/3 of the weight
12:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> How would you raise it?
12:28 PM roycroft: are you talking to me about my roof?
12:41 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> yes - sorry
12:48 PM roycroft: i would detach the top plate from the walls and jack the whole roof up, then install pony walls on top of the main walls
12:48 PM roycroft: and if i'm smart i'll strip the existing shingles and sheathing first, to make the lift lighter
12:50 PM roycroft: there is hinging concern when installing pony walls like that, and i was going to do the traditional fix of adding some full-height studs from the floor to the top of the pony wall, but a more modern fix is to attach some strapping plates to connect the pony wall studs to the main wall studs on the inside of the building
12:50 PM roycroft: those straps will prevent the pony wall from hinging outboard, and having them all around will effectively stiffen the structure so it won't try to hinge inward either
12:51 PM Rab: roycroft, any wind load in that area?
12:52 PM roycroft: yes, occasionally
12:52 PM roycroft: i'll also add hurricane straps to connect the roof framing to the walls
12:52 PM roycroft: and i may add a few full-length studs anyway
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I was wondering more - how are you physically going to lift the roof.
12:53 PM roycroft: physically i'll use some long beams across the rafters to spread the load out, and then lift with some shoring posts
12:53 PM roycroft: well, i'll lift with one or more hydraulic jacks, and then raise the shoring posts as i lift
12:53 PM roycroft: a little at a time - probably a couple inches per lift
12:54 PM Rab: Sheet-metal hurricane ties never seem convincing, but I guess the engineering is there...and they're required by code here.
12:54 PM roycroft: the engineering is there on them
12:54 PM roycroft: and at least down here in the valley we don't get hurricane-force winds
12:55 PM roycroft: up there maybe a bit stronger, but where i'm moving is, while deep in the foothills, still at low elevation
12:55 PM roycroft: things get vertical just outside town
12:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> thanks!
12:56 PM roycroft: there's a 150m elevation between eugene and oakridge (where i'm moving), which is about 70km
12:57 PM roycroft: going east of town, the altitude increases another 1200m in ~35km
12:57 PM Rab: My house has roof trusses on the same spacing as the studs, and each truss is fastened to a stud with a 5/8" bolt. Looks awesome to me, but maybe it's a dumb way to design a house now...bolted joint might shatter where a tied joint would flex.
12:57 PM roycroft: i haven't inspected closely, but i thinks the rafters are just nailed to the top plate on this roof
12:58 PM roycroft: it's older, cheaply built, certainly not permitted or inpsected, and it's an outbuilding, not a residence
12:59 PM roycroft: i say certainly not permitted or inspected because i did a search on permits on the property
01:00 PM roycroft: the online system has history going back to 1940, and the garage/shop slab was poured in 1967, according to the date someone scribed into the wet concrete
01:01 PM roycroft: there's a good chance that when the structure was built permits were not required for outbuildings that had no power or water
01:02 PM Rab: That's still the case here, for structures under 200sqft.
01:13 PM roycroft: 120 or less here, but the existing shop is 360, so well over the limit
01:57 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Intense
02:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> are you sore?
05:01 PM NoSpark: does anyone here use a spoilboard? how do you deal with it in gcode? just manually set the g54 z0 to the spoil board thickness? is there a way to have a constant Z offset?
05:15 PM roycroft: i think most folks here who have cnc routers use a spoilboard
05:16 PM roycroft: i would not trust manually compensating for the spoil board thickness - that will vary every time you install a new spoilboard, and if hte spoilboard is a manufactured wood product, as most are, the thickness will vary based on the humidity
05:16 PM roycroft: you touch off on the spoil board or on the top of your part
05:25 PM Tom_L: spoil board or sacrificial plate?
05:25 PM Tom_L: i use a plate
05:26 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A9_New/A9-A10_fixture2.jpg
05:27 PM Tom_L: i have several programs i run off that. zero is the RR corner and Z is usually off the plate
05:28 PM Tom_L: using G54 offset
05:30 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A8_new/A8%20profile1.jpg
05:30 PM Tom_L: another part off the same plate
05:30 PM Tom_L: notice i drill 2 locator holes for the next part so i can just advance the material
06:46 PM Unterhaus__ is now known as Unterhausen

07:26 PM Unterhausen: I bought a micro tower $20 computer at salvage today. Dual video cards for some reason. Would have been nice if they put more ram in it, only 8gb
07:28 PM bjorkintosh: can it be upgraded?
07:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> are they half hight?
08:13 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Tom_L today was awesome
08:14 PM XXCoder: had fun eh
08:15 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Yup, freaking amazing time
08:16 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Uploading the one video the wife got of the figure 8's
08:17 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> XXCoder learned a lot today
08:21 PM XXCoder: I learned a lot today? ;)
08:21 PM XXCoder: anyway nice sounds like fun learning day
08:23 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Very informative and fun
08:49 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, cool
