10:58 AM Roguish: good morning. well, cool and sunny here. forecast to be low 70's today.
11:26 AM JT-Shop: door frame is painted so nap time here
11:49 AM Roguish: roycroft, pics of the new place ????
12:33 PM Unterhausen: deciding on what wood lathe tool rest to buy is proving difficult. Too many choices
02:23 PM JT-Shop: your wood lathe doesn't have a tool rest?
02:24 PM Tom_L: did you rename any mdi widgets?
02:26 PM JT-Shop: I don't remember
02:27 PM Tom_L: i may work on it a bit after a nap
02:56 PM XXCoder: pretty cool. https://youtu.be/lmpB1K5L6tI
02:56 PM XXCoder: bit hacky way to make worm gear
03:19 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> yeah, thats how we used to make the extruder things on 3d printers
03:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/wRUGzVlpRtqogJcyLSpIpTTG
03:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Pin press!
03:35 PM ve7it: it certainly is!
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Dad made it.. It was funny. We made a push pin and the first time we tried to push the pin out of the track - we put a kink in the pin we made..
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> that is a lot of tonage.
03:40 PM ve7it: nice to have when you need it... pushing pins with a sledge hammer it pretty brutal
03:45 PM Tom_L: for the tread links?
03:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> yes
03:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol - you can just see the track to the right..
03:45 PM Tom_L: yup
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <willbertvaleroyant> Evening all, is there a functionality in linuxcnc as in lightburn to have a "display an overlay in the workspace"
03:53 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/TeakmdTqbMLzyfnEOUqJpizE
03:53 PM JT-Woodshop: smells like cedar in the shop
03:53 PM JT-Woodshop: I'm really happy with how the resaw came out
04:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Nice!!
04:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> This pile of wood has been here since I was a kid..
04:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/gjoRwNNfHeTswrUsukEYtNbk
04:08 PM Tom_L: better start using some of it
04:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I could fit all of the tractors in this building if it was cleaned out.
04:09 PM JT-Woodshop: what kind of wood is it?
04:09 PM Tom_L: i like the smell of cedar
04:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I have no clue
04:09 PM JT-Woodshop: it should be air dried by now
04:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> all from the land.
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> so - red/white oak.
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> and other stuff
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> cherry maybe. I really don't know
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> hickory
04:12 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/fPoQdakuImgHjdXmXvWlDnyB
04:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> for sure there is some white birtch in there..
04:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I can see the bark
04:13 PM JT-Woodshop: that's how I resaw live edge
04:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> band saws are awesome
04:13 PM JT-Woodshop: I've not seen a birch tree since Alaska
04:14 PM JT-Woodshop: I had to ponder a few minutes how to resaw the live edge boards
04:16 PM roycroft: we have heaps of birch trees around here
04:16 PM Tom_L: what is your cedar project?
04:17 PM roycroft: jt-woodshop: use some double-stick tape and fasten a straigt board a the bottom of the live edge board and use that to guide it through the bandsaw
04:20 PM JT-Woodshop: I used two screws near the edge
04:20 PM JT-Woodshop: bird feeder
04:21 PM Tom_L: redirecting the birds
04:21 PM roycroft: i've been working on installing the new shop door almost all day
04:21 PM Tom_L: away from the coop
04:21 PM roycroft: it was supposed to take an hour
04:21 PM roycroft: and i'm not nearly done
04:22 PM roycroft: whoever framed in the old door did so very sloppily - nothing was plumb or level - and they attached the siding with about 800 ring shank nails, which took me hours to pull
04:22 PM * roycroft is going to have to lower his expectations on getting things done here
04:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> white birch is pretty common around here..
04:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Although if you look at them sideways - they die
04:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> and like all trees - they tip over under heavy snow.. (the one standing behind is also a white birch..)
04:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/yTAtasoAjHtADvegBQRaaUKp
04:29 PM XXCoder: here evrgreens is pretty tough
04:30 PM XXCoder: it rarely falls over
04:30 PM XXCoder: even when snow is very rare and it would have weak branches due to that
04:30 PM JT-Woodshop: I'm pretty happy the cedar boards cleaned up at 0.750" as I started with a 1.750" thick board
04:31 PM XXCoder: willbert you probably need to explain a bit more on your question maybe
04:31 PM JT-Woodshop: I had a cedar tree bent over down to the deck... after the snow melted I pulled it upright with a rope
04:32 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/arEvdZWNCvLXlXtHRDBqOhtM
04:32 PM roycroft: well, lunch time is over
04:32 PM roycroft: i had best get back to work
04:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> very nice - pretty grain
04:34 PM JT-Woodshop: that board has been sitting in my friends leanto for 20 years or more
04:35 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/htmkVnAFAvjtbCPiCGBYtXrR
04:35 PM JT-Woodshop: that's the bird feeder, the floor finally rotted out
04:35 PM JT-Woodshop: but I think it's just pine maybe
04:35 PM JT-Woodshop: I think the live edge roof will make it look more natural
04:58 PM Unterhausen: JT what tool rest should I get for my wood lathe? I don't have one now
05:00 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/kglyIGLTkxWNjjaTPpbZOMTc
05:01 PM XXCoder: umm how old is it? i remember seeing house like that built
05:01 PM JT-Shop: I'm no expert but that's what came on my old lathe and it works fine for me
05:01 PM XXCoder: (on youtube)
05:01 PM XXCoder: probably not yours though
05:01 PM JT-Shop: the bird feeder?
05:01 PM XXCoder: yeah
05:02 PM JT-Shop: dunno we bought them years ago
05:02 PM XXCoder: ok not yours then, as video was about making it
05:02 PM XXCoder: it had exact same tray easy swap thingy as yours
05:02 PM JT-Shop: I've repaired them and modified them a few times
05:03 PM JT-Shop: I lengthened the sides for woodpeckers
05:03 PM Unterhausen: JT, thanks, does the length ever get in the way?
05:03 PM JT-Shop: no
05:05 PM Unterhausen: mine came with an 8" and 12" stock, but I didn't get them. 1 1/4" bar goes into the banjo, so not may lathes can use them
05:07 PM JT-Shop: I never knew what the thing was called that the tool rest fits into
05:15 PM Unterhausen: I somehow had the impression that you were more serious about latheing
05:15 PM XXCoder: fun blondihack today
05:15 PM JT-Shop: from all the dizzy bowls I made?
05:15 PM Unterhausen: that's it
05:15 PM JT-Shop: they were fun
05:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol
05:15 PM XXCoder: been a while lol fogot about those.
05:16 PM XXCoder: it looked lovely from what I recall
05:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I haven't used a wood lathe since highschool
05:16 PM Unterhausen: you replaced your chuck too, I recall
05:16 PM JT-Shop: yup I have two new chucks for the lathe
05:22 PM JT-Shop: the patriot chuck is amazing
05:26 PM JT-Shop: the easy chuck with the bowl reversal jaws works nice too
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> The way we used to resaw was to use a think kerf blade on the table saw with a power feeder and cut about 40% the width of the board, then flip and do the other side. You are left with an H shape. T
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> hen cutting it on a 36" bandsaw was easy with minimal waste and not having to put in a resaw blade.
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> obviously you need to have square edges first but it goes quick with a power feeder.
07:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/vXpQRQZnvHPlGKGCWdmhisJK
07:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> so.. Is that a real shell?
07:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> it has kicked around since I was a kid..
07:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/OoFYkbZoaNAFUUjEEYPZngyw
07:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I thought it was long gone.. But I found it in a junk drawer
07:20 PM Tom_L: it is
07:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> the brass ring measures .825
07:20 PM Tom_L: if you use google lens it will find similar with the ring
07:24 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, around?

07:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> the shell part does measure 20mm
07:27 PM Tom_L: 404
07:27 PM XXCoder: split url by being too long
07:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://tinyurl.com/hmpyhr8p
07:28 PM XXCoder: 50 dollars for one
07:28 PM Tom_L: is there a slug inside?
07:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> no - I didn't know what would go in there.
07:29 PM Tom_L: lens showed a couple with cross section that had something inside
07:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> powder?
07:31 PM XXCoder: wonder if its exploding bullet
07:31 PM Tom_L: i dunno, it looked solid
07:31 PM XXCoder: but cargo is removed
07:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol - it says what it is on the brass ring
07:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> 20 mm - mk.11-0 lot - e
07:38 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> looks like there were a lot of different versions of the shell
07:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> might be a dummy round

07:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> doesn't smell like anything... But I do feel funny..
07:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> 😉
07:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I found the title for the 47 truck.. I might put plates on it and use it to haul scrap
07:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> There is a place only about 6 miles away - so they would be pretty short trips. It is a big old duely..
07:55 PM XXCoder: in least theres no sudden noise or dead pixels in picture lol
07:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (I didn't even know if it had a title.. - so yay!)
07:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol
07:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> there is so much scrap here..
07:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> walking through the weeds and tripping over air tanks and racking - tons of random stuff
08:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> 42 chevy.. Looks like the title was never signed over..
08:08 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, can't double click on a saved mdi command and reuse it
08:09 PM Tom_L: 6 cyl?
08:09 PM Tom_L: i bet if you pulled the pan, you would find oil dippers on the rods
08:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> yes- strait 6
08:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> the engine was replaced.. something newer iirc

08:45 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, on file recent, if you enter a new file after the buffer is full it doesn't bump the oldest one out and take the #1 spot
08:46 PM Tom_L: ie: 5 files are in the list and #6 won't move to #1 spot and bump #5 out
08:47 PM Tom_L: clear mdi history doesn't
08:47 PM Tom_L: double click on an item in mdi history won't put it in the command line
08:49 PM Tom_L: jog mode doesn't switch to manual after running a gcode program and crashes

09:51 PM roycroft: i am back at the old house
09:52 PM roycroft: it took me almost all day to get that damn door installed
09:52 PM roycroft: so i'm already behind schedule, on day one
