12:11 AM roycroft: uri's new video
12:23 AM roycroft: i saw that a couple days go
12:23 AM roycroft: and i don't think he's annoying at all - he's one of my favorite youtubers
12:23 AM roycroft: his pigeon fetish is a little weird, though
12:23 AM XXCoder: yeah different people different takes :D
01:08 AM Deejay: moin
03:12 AM TurBoss: morning
04:38 AM solarwind: Leeloo you have a hardware step generator like a mesa card?
04:39 AM solarwind: Leeloo if so, that's more than enough
04:40 AM solarwind: roycroft so you think Israel is doing nothing wrong by murdering all those innocent civilians?
05:00 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:27 AM Tom_L: morning
05:36 AM Tom_L: XXCoder, my friend had one of those but his was a bridgeport: https://www.reddit.com/r/Machinists/comments/187g2av
05:36 AM Tom_L: hydraulic
05:40 AM Tom_L: bridgeport true tracer
05:44 AM Tom_L: that was before he had his first cnc. mostly traced stamping dies with it
06:38 AM * JT-Cave gives up on plugins for designer they just don't work in qt6
06:39 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:51 AM JT-Cave: yup and maybe qt broke qt6 designer for pyqt
06:51 AM JT-Cave: riverside computing or something like that
06:52 AM JT-Cave: https://doc.qt.io/qtforpython-6/PySide6/QtDesigner/index.html
06:52 AM JT-Cave: https://doc.qt.io/qtforpython-6/PySide6/QtDesigner/QPyDesignerCustomWidgetCollection.html
07:02 AM * JT-Cave never could understand the reason for people to create videos about programming and show only the screen while they fumble around
07:04 AM JT-Cave: well you gotta use pip3 to install pyside3 so I'm done looking at pyside
07:06 AM JT-Cave: well maybe not...
07:07 AM JT-Cave: python3-qtpy drags in a bunch of pyqt5 and pyside2 stuff...
07:17 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> In a deb package I just put pip dependcies in the post install
08:02 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:22 AM lcnc-relay: <jamal4267> Hi, i was planning on converting my optimum mh25pv to cnc and i thought about using https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/ts-series-3-axis-12-0nm-1699-68oz-in-nema-34-closed-loop-stepper-kit-w-power-suppl
10:22 AM lcnc-relay: <jamal4267> y-3-clts120-v41 steppers but im lost with mesa boards. I thought about using mesa 7i96 but im not sure if compatible. Its my first build so all help is welcome
10:25 AM Tom_L: 7i96s would be a good choice
10:25 AM jpa-: it will work, though getting the encoder input to linuxcnc also would take a bit more work
10:26 AM Tom_L: and if you need more IO add a sserial card
10:26 AM jpa-: it's not strictly necessary but can be nice to have for diagnostics and to track position if you power down the drivers during e.g. emergency stop
10:44 AM roycroft: it snowed here last night
10:45 AM roycroft: the snow is mostly gone already, and when it starts raining it will all be gone
11:32 AM JT-Shop: nap time
12:19 PM JT-Shop: crawfish time
12:44 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: thats cool, though thats a lot of clutter lol
03:34 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, you thinkin of switching to pyside?
03:50 PM JT-Cave: was for a minute...
03:52 PM XXCoder: amazing blondihack video today
03:59 PM Tom_L: just a minute? :)
04:13 PM JT-Shop: only took that long to decide I didn't want to use pip or the lib in debian that drags in a ton of other shit you don't need
04:13 PM XXCoder: pip the linux breaker
04:18 PM JT-Shop: pip is just another pia for a user to have to deal with so I try and avoid that
04:19 PM XXCoder: yeah and it can break stuff easily. id never recommand using pip
04:23 PM JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/7cOvK46JeiY?t=510
04:23 PM Roguish: hey JT, where can I find a beginner python
04:24 PM Tom_L: Roguish, me! i'm a beginner :)
04:24 PM JT-Shop: hmm not being a smart butt but the internet
04:24 PM JT-Shop: just depends on what your trying to learn
04:24 PM Tom_L: w3schools is ok
04:24 PM Roguish: any specifically /????
04:24 PM JT-Shop: well my python repo has loads of examples
04:25 PM Roguish: ok, i'll check it out
04:26 PM Tom_L: the widget maker is broke in pyqt6?
04:26 PM Tom_L: or whatever it's called
04:26 PM Tom_L: and 5 is eol?
04:26 PM JT-Shop: never could get it to add a widget to qt6 designer
04:27 PM Tom_L: i thought you said qt6 didn't have a designer?
04:27 PM JT-Shop: I found it, but it's not in a standard location
04:27 PM Tom_L: is why you were using 5
04:27 PM Tom_L: ahh
04:34 PM JT-Shop: even if you install designer 6 it does not show up on the menu so that sucks
04:34 PM Tom_L: that was an upcoming question :)
04:35 PM Tom_L: are you using 6 or sticking with 5 then?
04:36 PM JT-Shop: I'm sticking with 5 as there is no benefit to use 6 as the xml is the same for both
04:37 PM Tom_L: seems pyside has about the same set of functionality as pyqt
04:37 PM Tom_L: from what little i saw anyway
04:38 PM JT-Shop: I think they are basically the same
04:40 PM Tom_L: package manager shows python3-pyqt6.qtdesigner but you say it doesn't install as a menu item?
04:41 PM JT-Shop: correct and it does not install in a bin dir
04:45 PM JT-Shop: anyway it's time to get back to coding flex
04:46 PM Tom_L: any of the file open etc code working yet?
04:46 PM JT-Shop: close
04:47 PM JT-Shop: I have something I want to try out for dro and offset labels
04:48 PM Tom_L: remove plugin support.. is that because of pyqt6?
04:50 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ok found FreeCodeCamp.org
04:58 PM Roguish: also tons of stuff on python.org
05:00 PM Tom_L: i've used python.org for some examples as well
05:06 PM JT-Shop: I found I never could learn a programming language unless I had a problem I wanted to solve
05:08 PM Tom_L: i agree with that 100%
05:08 PM Tom_L: i self taught every one i used
05:11 PM JT-Shop: Roguish, https://github.com/jethornton/python3/tree/master
05:18 PM roycroft: my round bar was just delivered
05:18 PM roycroft: i can finally get back to work on the threading tool
05:18 PM XXCoder: glad its not out 'round anymore eh
05:20 PM roycroft: i'm lucky i even got it
05:20 PM roycroft: it was shipped loose in a priority mail envelope
05:21 PM roycroft: which is almost completely destroyed
05:21 PM roycroft: the usps wrapped it in two thick plastic envelopes
05:21 PM XXCoder: geez
05:21 PM roycroft: which are also almost completely destroyed
05:21 PM roycroft: i was able to remove the bar without opening the plastic envelopes
05:21 PM XXCoder: hopefully rod isnt too dented to fit in lathe
05:21 PM roycroft: it's 2"
05:22 PM roycroft: it will be fine
05:22 PM XXCoder: ok
05:22 PM Roguish: JT-Shop, thanks for the link
05:22 PM roycroft: i was supposed to go do some work at the fair today, but i haven't been able able to get ahold of anyone on site
05:22 PM roycroft: my plan was to do that today and work in the shop tomorrow
05:23 PM Roguish: rain
05:23 PM roycroft: i bet they're going to want me to go out there tomorrow
05:23 PM roycroft: we had snow last night
05:23 PM roycroft: it was gone by early morning
05:23 PM roycroft: and it was supposed to rain all day, but it's not started yet
05:23 PM roycroft: it looks like another couple hours or so before it rains
05:24 PM XXCoder: its clear and cold windy here
05:24 PM Roguish: rained hard here last night. overcast most of the day, but raining again now.
05:24 PM XXCoder: now its predicted it will snow tomorrow
05:24 PM XXCoder: still doubt it, though closer to today more likely it will
05:24 PM Roguish: light dust of snow on Mt Diablo, just shy of 4000ft
05:25 PM Roguish: Sierras
05:25 PM Roguish: Sierra's are crazy now.
05:25 PM XXCoder: how goes on new house
05:25 PM roycroft: yeah, the sierras are very blizzardy
05:25 PM roycroft: i'm waiting on the appraiser
05:26 PM roycroft: he's going to check it out on wednesday
05:26 PM roycroft: if it appraises well (and it should), then it's just a few days until closing
05:26 PM roycroft: so we're in the final stages
05:26 PM roycroft: and i'm working on the shop layout right now
05:26 PM XXCoder: cool
05:27 PM roycroft: i've been watching some videos about lifting a garage
05:27 PM roycroft: and i'm thinking of doing that
05:27 PM Tom_L: as in moving one?
05:27 PM roycroft: as in making it taller
05:27 PM Tom_L: oh
05:27 PM Tom_L: if the foundation is deep enough to support it
05:28 PM roycroft: i was going to completely tear off the roof, built a crib wall on top of the existing walls, and then build a new roof on top of it
05:28 PM roycroft: yeah, it will be fine
05:28 PM roycroft: i'm only lifting 2 feet
05:28 PM roycroft: i still need to replace the roof, but i'd rather not have to do all of that at once
05:28 PM roycroft: so now i'm thinking about lifting the entire garage 2' and building a crib wall underneath the existing walls
05:29 PM JT-Shop: how big is the garage?
05:29 PM roycroft: then i can redo the roof later, when i get the addition built
05:29 PM roycroft: 15'x23'
05:29 PM roycroft: not too big
05:29 PM Tom_L: i see why now
05:29 PM Tom_L: :)
05:29 PM JT-Shop: yup that's not very big
05:29 PM roycroft: and it's just a bare stud wall - no interior walls
05:29 PM JT-Shop: what's on the outside?
05:29 PM Tom_L: when i moved in mine was tiny but original to the property
05:29 PM roycroft: t111
05:29 PM roycroft: and no other sheathing
05:30 PM JT-Shop: that's pretty structural then
05:30 PM roycroft: i think i can brace it up well enough to lift it
05:30 PM roycroft: yes
05:30 PM roycroft: the new addition will be 12'x34', off the back of the original building and at a 90 degree angle
05:30 PM roycroft: so i'll have an l-shaped shop
05:31 PM roycroft: if i lift the original garage with the roof intact, build the addition 10' high, i can then build the roof for both segments
05:32 PM roycroft: the existing roof is a gable roof, as will be the roof on the addition, so i'll have to frame up valleys where they intersect
05:33 PM roycroft: the goal is to move much of my machinery into the existing building, built the addition, and keep the machinery under cover the whole time, by building the addition roof first, moving everything into the addition, then rebuilding the original roof
05:34 PM roycroft: the floor space is still not as much as i'd like, but i figure with the 10' walls i'll have a lot more overhead room for storage, and can make better use of the floor space
05:34 PM JT-Shop: sounds like a well thought out plan
05:34 PM roycroft: also, the existing roof is a truss roof, and i'd like to stick build the new one over both parts, so i can have some attic space
05:34 PM roycroft: i've spent a lot of time thinking about this
05:34 PM roycroft: the shop is what makes or breaks the deal
05:34 PM roycroft: if i don't get a better shop it's not worth moving
05:35 PM roycroft: even though it will be to a more secure area
05:36 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/HudPizgTaIDmZbXqgNWVldYe
05:37 PM XXCoder: roy you ever seen that wesley video where he designs isulated cover for his shop garage door?
05:37 PM XXCoder: interesting storage system jt
05:38 PM JT-Shop: that's a 12' wall but 10' would work too and we did that in the old shop with 10' walls
05:51 PM JT-Shop: XXCoder, it hangs from the trusses
05:51 PM XXCoder: saw that yeah
05:51 PM XXCoder: I wonder what load limits is
05:52 PM JT-Shop: I imagine it will hold a lot of weight, but didn't test it :)
05:52 PM XXCoder: easy to test though. just add till it falls, then remove one item
05:53 PM JT-Shop: trusses are crazy strong after they are installed and braced
05:56 PM roycroft: no
05:56 PM roycroft: i'm thinking about getting a roll-up garage door for the shop
05:56 PM roycroft: that will take up the least amount of space
05:56 PM roycroft: i was going to not have a garage door at all, but sometimes it's really handy
05:57 PM XXCoder: lemme find a link a sec. it takes very little space when closed
05:57 PM XXCoder: and isulates the garage area very well
05:57 PM roycroft: a roll-up door will cost 2x as much as a conventional door, but it would be a lot better
05:57 PM roycroft: i can get insulated roll-up doors
05:57 PM roycroft: i just got some rough measurements of the wood shop machines and fixtures
05:57 PM JT-Shop: I put a close to the ceiling garage door in the machine shop and it is 6" from the ceiling
05:58 PM XXCoder: it wasnt enough for him apparently. while you probably dont need it, it was interesting watch anyway
05:58 PM roycroft: i'll play with those for a bit, and then see how much room is left for the fabrication shop stuff
05:58 PM roycroft: i don't need a tall door
05:58 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmOxuwojt_c
05:58 PM roycroft: the standard 7' would be fine, although an 8' high door isn't much more money
05:58 PM XXCoder: check that out
05:59 PM XXCoder: his shop used to get really really hot in summers. not as much now
05:59 PM XXCoder: 120f garage rollup temps
06:00 PM XXCoder: he tests bunch of options before he picks one
06:00 PM roycroft: that's kind a neet idea, xxcoder, although it takes up a lot of space
06:00 PM XXCoder: not too bad, few inches to front when closed
06:01 PM roycroft: i need to push things around on my floor plan and see how everything will fit before i go any further
06:02 PM roycroft: my garage door would be on the north side of the building, so i would not have to worry about it getting too hot in the summer
06:02 PM XXCoder: yeah thats good direction
06:02 PM XXCoder: the insulation test section is nice though
06:05 PM XXCoder: wow its been a year since that video already
06:13 PM roycroft: my current shop is not insulated, and my current garage door is not insulated
06:14 PM roycroft: i think just getting an insulated shop and garage door will help immensely in the new shop
06:14 PM XXCoder: I bet
06:14 PM roycroft: adding an additional insulator like in that video is something i probably would not even want to think about until after i've lived the shop for a full year
06:15 PM roycroft: but it is something i would consider if i felt it a problem
06:15 PM XXCoder: makes sense. your setup might be enough after all
06:26 PM Roguish: roycroft, a friend of mine does auto body work. he built a shop for himself. 3000 aq ft. with radiant heating in the slab.
06:28 PM Roguish: he was tired of crawling around on cold slabs
06:29 PM XXCoder: even small amount of warming and it wont be icy cold
06:29 PM XXCoder: I wonder what temp he set it at
06:33 PM roycroft: yeah, radiant heat would be nice
06:33 PM roycroft: i won't be doing that though
06:33 PM roycroft: but i also don't crawl around on the floor when i can help it
06:35 PM Roguish: yeah, his shop was kinda exceptional. has a full size, fully legal car spray booth inside. works almost entirely on Ferraris
06:35 PM Roguish: paint job will run ya 50k+
06:36 PM Roguish: he's good.
06:37 PM Roguish: anyway, think comfort in your shop. makes spending time there much better, more productive
06:59 PM roycroft: i am thinking that
06:59 PM roycroft: in fact, that's one reason for raising the height of the shop
07:00 PM roycroft: not just for better overhead storage and clearance
07:00 PM roycroft: but i might put down a wooden floor over the woodshop part of the building
07:00 PM roycroft: raised on a 2x4 frame, so i can run electrical and stuff underneath the floor
07:00 PM roycroft: a wood floor will be much more comfortable to stand on than a concrete floor
10:08 PM roycroft: my new shop will be too small, but it will be much better than what i have now
10:08 PM XXCoder: use new building to build even bigger new shop
10:08 PM roycroft: i'll be more than doubling the size of the existing building right away
10:09 PM roycroft: but i'll be pushing both my budget and the allowable size per zoning regulations
10:09 PM roycroft: i can make it work though
