02:45 AM jfs is now known as jfsimon
04:37 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:13 AM mrec: Tom_L: you're right, it's rs232 of course.
06:39 AM JT-Cave: W: jet: wrong-manual-section 1 != NOVEMBER 2023 [usr/share/man/man1/jet.1.gz:1]
06:39 AM JT-Cave: I wonder what that lintian error is?
07:44 AM JT-Cave: john@cave:~$ designer
07:44 AM JT-Cave: Loading Jet Plugins ============================
07:44 AM JT-Cave: Finished loading
07:44 AM JT-Cave: QWidget: Must construct a QApplication before a QWidget
07:44 AM JT-Cave: Aborted
07:44 AM JT-Cave: time to hit the shower...
07:50 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Hmm qt6 may have changed things.
07:51 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> 8" of snow. Drifting higher than my knees. Don't think I'm risking the roads today
08:24 AM JT-Cave: I changed it back to pyqt5 because I'm using qt5 designer as qt6 designer is mia
08:25 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Designer could switch between 4 and 5 with designer -qt=4
08:26 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Maybe designer -qt=6 will work?
08:26 AM JT-Cave: I just pushed what I did to attempt to make it work
08:26 AM JT-Cave: hmm I've only ran designer from the menu
08:26 AM JT-Cave: john@cave:~$ designer -qt=6
08:26 AM JT-Cave: designer: could not find a Qt installation of '6'
08:27 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Interesting..
08:27 AM * JT-Cave goes to clean chicken shit
08:27 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> There was three... qtcreator?
08:29 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> ... and a burst pipe.
08:31 AM JT-Cave: https://packages.debian.org/sid/source/qt6-tools
08:32 AM JT-Cave: that's missing on debian 12
08:36 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Might be worth it to look at the new kde
08:54 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Yep. In my experience it's not as bloated as gnome, but not as stable. So it's a pick and choose your battle
08:54 AM JT-Cave: what I need is a dead nuts simple example of adding a plugin... something like a label with an extra property or something
08:54 AM JT-Cave: LOL ;yup
08:55 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> The font thing I did at the end was how I add property's. You can add any python object as a property.
08:55 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Int, float, bool, qtgui objects
08:57 AM * JT-Cave heads to town to ship some packages and deliver a thingy
11:28 AM JT-Cave: Designer: A class name mismatch occurred when creating a widget using the custom widget factory registered for widgets of class halmeter_widget. It returned a widget of class HalMeterWidget.
11:33 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> That'll be in the plug in file...
11:34 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Ah. def name needs to return HalMeterWidget
11:35 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> And domXML
11:35 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Imma see if I can find a spare machine to go to the latest and greatest Ubuntu. To properly test all of this.
11:41 AM JT-Cave: I forgot to change a couple of imports to qt5 but when I did that it worked except for the error
11:41 AM JT-Cave: just got a call from the spine doctor so I'll be gone all afternoon they are 1.625 hours away
11:47 AM Tom_L: sad day yesterday, said goodbye to the last pet
11:48 AM JT-Cave: sorry to hear that
11:48 AM JT-Cave: we still have 10 pets but Peter has us beat
11:49 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> What did you have Tom?
11:54 AM roycroft: sorry to hear that, tom_l
11:54 AM roycroft: i'm down to my last cat, and she is getting pretty old
11:55 AM roycroft: i may get a kitten, but i'm waiting to see if i move or not before doing that
11:57 AM Tom_L: mrec, did you get it communicating?
11:58 AM Tom_L: beagle
12:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Aww.. Poop. Sorry Tom_L
12:19 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:20 PM pcw--home is now known as 040AAEAAJ
12:21 PM XXCoder: tom thats sad that your pet passed away
12:37 PM 040AAEAAJ: Sorry for you loss Tom_L We lost our last dog in 2021 and it was really tough, still not ready for a new one
01:43 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/J--QVhGheP4 might be interesting
01:43 PM XXCoder: it covers bunch of free cad programs
01:50 PM roycroft: that video is a lie
01:50 PM XXCoder: in what way?>
01:50 PM roycroft: the guy said he tested "all" free cad programs, but openscad is not on his list
01:51 PM XXCoder: oh its all known constrant based cad
01:51 PM XXCoder: openscad isnt one of those
01:53 PM roycroft: i did not notice that qualifier
01:53 PM roycroft: and i pretty much expected openscad to not be on the list to begin with
01:53 PM XXCoder: its powerful modeling tool thats for sure
01:53 PM roycroft: in fact, one reason i decided to check out that video was to see if perchance he did include it
01:53 PM roycroft: but i expected not
01:55 PM XXCoder: oh yes got reminded that skerchup dont allow you to update it after setting design. i remember setting something to wrong size and had to fix it
01:55 PM XXCoder: didnt like it lol
01:56 PM XXCoder: sad to see it still an issue years later
01:57 PM XXCoder: im wrong on it all being constrant based, I guess openscad is just too hard or something
01:59 PM XXCoder: ondsel is interesting. revamped freecad basically, though no longer completely free open source. (free if you dont need services but yeah)
02:05 PM XXCoder: I like the ui changes. freecad biggest negative is ui honestly
02:05 PM XXCoder: it doesnt even save toolbar positions
02:09 PM XXCoder: I wonder if freecad will take hints and update the ui lol
02:12 PM CaptHindsight: FreeCad enjoys its UI, little chance of that changing soon
02:13 PM XXCoder: honestly ondsel dont change all that much
02:13 PM XXCoder: just some refinement and better ui to start
02:13 PM mrec_: Tom_L: I will try next time, the screen itself only shows a flickering cursor
02:13 PM mrec_: I was focussing on that part so far I did not try to communicate with it
02:14 PM mrec_: so far it could be that the backup battery is dead (I'm studying the documentation)
02:14 PM mrec_: after 5 years disconnected + harsh environment I would not wonder
02:14 PM XXCoder: some stuff do act oddly with dead battery
02:15 PM XXCoder: even if they have plenty of other power
02:15 PM mrec_: at the moment I'm like the whole Mitsubishi shit should go away and slowly work toward changing it to linuxcnc
02:16 PM mrec_: the battery should not cause no screen availability... but others reported that this can happen
02:16 PM mrec_: poor design.
02:17 PM mrec_: when connecting the handheld 24V drops to 0
02:17 PM mrec_: the handheld is very primitive
02:32 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Yo
03:21 PM Tom_L: JT problems with pyqt?
03:38 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Tom_L trying to add custom widgets to des
03:38 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Designer
03:39 PM Tom_L: hmm
03:41 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> I almost got the examples to work that sa... made for me
03:44 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> No tab completion on the phone lol
03:44 PM Tom_L: gonna revert back to 5?
03:44 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> I've always used Qt5 Designer
03:45 PM Tom_L: oh, it's designer giving the fits not qtpy6?
03:45 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Qt6 Designer is not in the Debian 12
03:45 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Right
03:46 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> So far PyQt6 has only one issue with loading a ui file
03:51 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT: is it much effort to change a ui from qtpy5 to qtpy6 ???
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> None at all
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ok
03:52 PM Tom_L: it's mostly like an xml file isn't it?
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> The ui is just an xml file
03:53 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Yup
03:53 PM Tom_L: what client do you use on your phone?
03:53 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Element
03:54 PM XXCoder: having good compitability is good. it should always be case that code would just need to changed by just a little bit to be compilable or work in newer version
03:55 PM Tom_L: ahh that's right..
03:55 PM Tom_L: i should have figured that out from the id
03:58 PM Tom_L: duh
03:59 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> I tried an IRC app years ago but it was buggy
03:59 PM XXCoder: same
04:00 PM XXCoder: ircd something? forgot
04:00 PM roycroft: ircd is the server app
04:00 PM XXCoder: yeah misremembered then
04:01 PM Tom_L: i've used revolution irc on android and juicessh to acces my server
04:01 PM * roycroft still uses ircii, which he's been using since the early '90s
04:01 PM Tom_L: android?
04:01 PM XXCoder: on pc I use hexchat. started with xchat
04:01 PM roycroft: i'm still using the same scripts i've been using since the early '90s, with soem modifications
04:02 PM roycroft: there are newer irc clients with more features, but what i started with still does the job for me
04:02 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i'd recommend it to someone new to irc, but it absolutely works just fine
04:03 PM Tom_L: the question was more about mobile apps
04:03 PM XXCoder: yeah I cant find that android irc client I used
04:03 PM Tom_L: i've tried 3-4
04:04 PM XXCoder: its gone, I guess it stopped being updated then it got culled
04:09 PM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> We were debating on going to pyqt6 but helping has made me want to stay on pyqt5 until april at least
04:09 PM Roguish: waz up in April
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> 24.04 release
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> ubuntu LTS is 4 years every aprile
04:11 PM Tom_L: they get an extra day to procrastinate this year
04:12 PM Tom_L: i guess maybe they picked that 4 year cycle on purpose...
04:13 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Lol
04:14 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Heading back to the barn
04:17 PM Tom_L: things good i hope
05:35 PM XXCoder: roycroft: you still want the book scanner?
05:35 PM XXCoder: also delta printer
05:53 PM Guts71: Hello everyone !
05:53 PM XXCoder: hi
05:56 PM Guts71: I want to make something via a raspberry pi, for this I would first like to create an HMI to control a standard synchronous motor, is it possible that I can make it on linix debian?
06:03 PM Tom_L: Guts71, linuxcnc will run on a rpi4 if that's what you're asking
06:04 PM Guts71: +Tom_L Yes
06:05 PM Guts71: +Tom_L Yes
06:05 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/downloads/
06:05 PM Tom_L: ~1/2 way down
06:08 PM Guts71: +Tom_L <3 Thanks
06:10 PM * JT-Cave is home and done for the day
06:46 PM * roycroft is feeling old now
06:47 PM roycroft: i was just on the phone getting a quote on homeowner's insurance, and the agent asked if i had worked with their agency before
06:47 PM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Just now?
06:47 PM roycroft: i said "yes, i had auto insurance through you in the early '90s"
06:47 PM roycroft: and she responded "wow! that's way before i was born!"
06:48 PM XXCoder: congats youre legally old
06:48 PM roycroft: so it would appear
06:48 PM * roycroft reaches for the bottle of done's pills, but finds them out of grasp, and looks for a young whippersnapper to fetch them for him
06:52 PM XXCoder: lol well you saw my earlier question?
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> That's ok.. My 2 kids are 8 and 11.. I get 'aww - out with grandpa today?'
06:55 PM XXCoder: prematurely grandpa lol
06:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/UrhlqCgMJsZteKAWlceeAbQq
06:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> i mean.. can you blame them
06:57 PM XXCoder: thats mid range, not ancient
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> hahaha start saying they are your dads kids from a second marriage
06:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I had a chatty dentist that when I said - ' I started late ' - said his dad remarried a girl much younger and started having kids.. So the dentist kids and his dads kids are the same age..
06:59 PM XXCoder: my dad had us pretty late
07:00 PM XXCoder: my dad is few months under my age + 50 years
07:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I was on the fence for a very long time..
07:00 PM XXCoder: he would have been 98 now
07:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> wow..
07:00 PM XXCoder: my grandfather would have been 100 now I think
07:00 PM XXCoder: (moms side)
07:01 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> my dad was my age around 30, i feel like i wasted my life. but he would still be proud of me
07:01 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> i always felt like he was hank hill and i was bobby hill from king of the hill
07:02 PM XXCoder: me and my dad couldnt be more different. he worked for miliary base for over 50 years
07:02 PM XXCoder: longest job I ever had was over 5 years before laid off and got health issues
07:07 PM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Our first one is on the way and we've been told many times it seems late to start a family at 30
07:10 PM XXCoder: 30 is fine I think in most case
07:10 PM XXCoder: at 40s you would have young teenagers which would be tiring but not too bad
07:17 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, you look perplexed in that pic
07:21 PM XXCoder: sushi is yummy
07:21 PM Tom_L: enjoy my portion too
07:21 PM Tom_L: i'm not a sushi fan
07:21 PM XXCoder: lol too bad
07:21 PM XXCoder: i got some from winco
07:32 PM jdh: Casey's gas station sushi!
07:33 PM Tom_L: uh huh for sure
07:34 PM XXCoder: yeah not getting that one lol
07:34 PM XXCoder: winco is quite good food store
07:35 PM XXCoder: and I watched some lady make more sushi as I was getting couple of packages
07:41 PM roycroft: winco is a decent store with really good prices
07:41 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i'm ready to try winco sushi though
07:42 PM roycroft: the only problem with winco is they don't take credit cards
07:43 PM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> No where near has 1/2" pipe. Gonna have to drive an hour one way to get 6" of pipe.
07:43 PM roycroft: i know that helps them keep prices low, but if they accepted credit cards they'd probably only have to raise their prices about 3%, and i get 6% cash back on groceries with one of my amex cards
07:44 PM * roycroft just ordered some 2" round bar off ebay because the local steel yard were out
07:44 PM jdh: I'd never go to a grocery store that didn't take CC. Seems odd anyway. I never have cash
07:44 PM XXCoder: I always have small amount of cash
07:44 PM roycroft: they take debit cards, jdh
07:44 PM Tom_L: several here do scan & go
07:44 PM jdh: I don't do debit cards. Worst thing ever
07:45 PM roycroft: i rarely use mine
07:45 PM roycroft: credit cards are much safer to use
07:45 PM roycroft: by a factor of about 1000
07:46 PM roycroft: there are a few businesses around here, excluding the pot stores, that are cash only - no checks or credit cards
07:46 PM roycroft: i have to assume that those places keep two sets of books
07:46 PM roycroft: if you know what i mean
07:49 PM XXCoder: no I dont
07:50 PM XXCoder: lol well
07:50 PM XXCoder: im sure they would evenually be audited
07:56 PM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> I'm assuming yall are American? North of the 49th almost everyone uses debit.
08:00 PM roycroft: south of the 49th a large portion of the population use debit cards
08:00 PM roycroft: but i rarely use one
08:00 PM roycroft: why use a debit card at a grocer and pay full price when i can use a credit card and get 6% cash back?
08:01 PM roycroft: why use a debit card at the lumber yard when i can use a credit card and get 5% cash back?
08:01 PM roycroft: etc.
08:01 PM roycroft: i pay all my cards off in full every month, so there's never interest charges
08:01 PM XXCoder: yeah. I wont get one though
08:02 PM roycroft: so for transactions where the physical card is present it makes sense to use a credit card
08:02 PM roycroft: for online/phone transactions it makes 100x more sense, because if your cc is compromised you're protected
08:02 PM roycroft: if someone hacks your bank account you lose your cash, and have a hard time recovering it, if you can at all
08:13 PM jdh: IMO, there is zero times when a debit card is better
08:15 PM roycroft: well
08:15 PM roycroft: that is actually debatable
08:16 PM roycroft: my main checking account at my credit union is a money market account
08:16 PM roycroft: i get a fraction of a percent interest on the average daily balance in the account (i think it's about 0.05% right now)
08:17 PM roycroft: but i make 12 debit transactions per month i get 1.75% interest on the averge daily balance
08:17 PM roycroft: so i try to do a dozen $2 or so debit transactions per month to bump the interest rate up
08:18 PM roycroft: i can fortunately log into the credit union website and it will give me real-time stats on how many debit purchases i've made so far during the month
08:18 PM roycroft: that's a rather unusual case, but it is one where i would argue that using a debit card, in a very calculated manner, can be advantageous
09:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I was almost 40 when Stella was born.
09:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Honestly though - I wouldn't have had it any other way. I couldn't imagine 20 year old me raising a child..
09:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> roycroft: You are probably the 1% that actually takes advantage of the cash back.. I think way too many people rely on credit just to live.
09:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> With divorce a few years back - I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I will be able to be free of debt and also be able to take advantage of cash back.. I am taking care of my mo
09:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> ms estate and we use credit cards to pay for household stuff/bills. The cash suprisingly adds up quick.
09:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> *cash back
10:56 PM mrec_: ok one step further the CNC I'm looking at is missing the controller PCB, they assume it's defect and it has been lying around on the shelf for 6 years
