04:28 AM Tom_L: morning
04:28 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:29 AM Tom_L: 42°F high 62°F
04:29 AM Tom_L: when are you gonna fly to learn to drive?
04:29 AM Tom_L: that should be fun
04:32 AM JT-Cave: march 19th
04:32 AM JT-Cave: it's a two day course on the 20th and 21st
04:32 AM Tom_L: i thought you went to one a while back?
04:34 AM JT-Cave: I signed up for it a while back
04:38 AM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVCBnRnY4ic&t=797s
04:39 AM Tom_L: i think i saw that one
04:40 AM Tom_L: fun
04:40 AM Tom_L: i wonder how much sand blows across the track
04:41 AM Tom_L: that would make it more interesting
04:41 AM Tom_L: :)
04:42 AM JT-Cave: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c8-general-discussion/4683823-the-ron-fellows-school-meetup-thread-31.html#post1607503286
04:50 AM Tom_L: i saw an example something like: setChecked(!isChecked()) but i couldn't get it to work
04:51 AM JT-Cave: setChecked takes a Boolean
04:51 AM Tom_L: this way if an outside source changes the coolant status the buttons reflect the update
04:51 AM JT-Cave: isChecked returns a boolean
04:51 AM JT-Cave: ! will break setChecked
04:57 AM Tom_L: i ran it on the mill and step still doesn't step here
04:57 AM Tom_L: not sure why
05:37 AM JT-Cave: I'll have to look at step and see what's going on
06:57 AM CaptHindsight: I don't like Boolean since it doesn't cover grey areas
07:56 AM Tom_L: oh, JT-Cave for some reason with jet S0 M3 doesn't work either. that may not be a jet problem but it works on the mill with axis
07:56 AM Tom_L: i do that to turn off the spindle for my axis test
07:58 AM Tom_L: pulled the changes, step still doesn't
08:08 AM JT-Cave: step works
08:09 AM JT-Cave: s0m3 does not turn the spindle off in axis
08:09 AM * JT-Cave start his chicken day
08:11 AM Tom_L: i wonder if step is another RTAI thing
08:13 AM JT-Cave: it takes 3 step presses on my sample program before anything moves
08:14 AM JT-Cave: watch the interp state on the status tab
09:37 AM Roguish: good morning.... cold here. was 32 a while ago. for Roy that's 0
09:48 AM Roguish: Autodesk founder, John Walker, has left the room.......
10:07 AM bjorkintosh: autocad was a damned fine piece of software, before the MBAs came for Autodesk.
10:08 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> it was 62f here yesterday
10:09 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (western wisconsin)
10:12 AM roycroft: it was almost that warm here yesterday
10:12 AM roycroft: and we had sunny breaks
10:13 AM * roycroft ran errands without a jacket or cap yesterday
10:13 AM roycroft: but it's back to seasonal normal weather today - cool and rainy
10:43 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> It is f'in windy here currently.. Had some tornados near madison
10:46 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> bunch of people lost power..
10:48 AM bjorkintosh: you have tornadoes all the way in Wisconsin?
11:06 AM roycroft: that would not surprise me - we had plent of tornados when i lived in chicago
11:06 AM roycroft: wisconsin is not far from chicago at all
11:07 AM roycroft: close enough that 18-year-olds from where i lived would head up to wisconson every weekend to party, as the drinking age was 18 there at the time
11:29 AM bjorkintosh: I wonder if tornadoes know when they're not in Kansas anymore.
11:31 AM roycroft: there's an area just southeast of portland that get several small tornadoes per yer, on average
11:31 AM roycroft: most people don't associate tornadoes with the west coast
11:39 AM Roguish: bjorkintosh, guess how many copies of autocad sold in China?
11:40 AM Roguish: 1
11:41 AM bjorkintosh: hahaha
11:41 AM bjorkintosh: that's all they needed!
11:47 AM roycroft: they probably stole that copy
11:48 AM bjorkintosh: autodesk's market cap is 57 BILLION (with a bee) dollars!
11:48 AM bjorkintosh: I think they may not have noticed.
12:36 PM Unterhausen: One of my Chinese friends brought me back a cd filled with an amazing number of cracked programs
12:37 PM bjorkintosh: yes. I got similar things from Singapore.
12:37 PM roycroft: you mean "normal software", from the chinese perspective
12:37 PM bjorkintosh: it was so cheap too.
12:37 PM Unterhausen: As soon as software companies started suing people for things like that I destroyed it. Probably $100k usd worth of programs
12:38 PM Unterhausen: Penn State's license for windows had an amazing number of people using it at one time. I'm positive it's still in use somewhere
12:40 PM Unterhausen: In retrospect, handing out a license that could be used anywhere on any computer for free probably wasn't a good idea. I legitimately installed it on 50 penn state computers
12:40 PM roycroft: i'm sure it was a site license, and microsoft were paid handsomly for it
12:54 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Yo
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT: I see you're working on Jet
01:04 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Making a lot of progress
01:04 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> cool. I made up a Vismach of my little mill.
01:05 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Thinking of changing the name to Flex GUI
01:05 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> it's yours, do whatever you like....
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> I think Flex GUI better describes it
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> You can have whatever you want
01:08 PM Roguish: Unterhausen, a friend of mine did similar. brought a CD back from Singapore. crammed with cracked codes.
01:09 PM Roguish: sheeeze. i may still have a copy....
01:17 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Roguish got a control system to quote
01:17 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> cool. something to do in your retirement...
01:18 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> LOL
01:25 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> I'll retire when I run out if jobs lol
01:25 PM XXCoder: in other words, you'll retire when youre 6 feet under?
01:25 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> After all I'm only 70
01:26 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Maybe the day before
01:39 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, can you post your test program somewhere and i'll use it to test
01:41 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> put a little Jimmy Buffet on
01:43 PM Tom_L: i'll test it later, gotta go see the banker & the accountant this afternoon
01:52 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, it's working now, i must not have updated that directory
01:52 PM Tom_L: yeah the whole thing is working better now
01:54 PM Tom_L: Roguish, have you tried the latest version?
01:55 PM Roguish: Tom_L, no, will try it later today, if there's a .deb
01:56 PM Tom_L: umm if there isn't i can put on on my site before i go here
01:56 PM Tom_L: i think he keeps debs there but not sure
01:57 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> not seeing one on his github...
01:58 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/JET/
01:58 PM Tom_L: 0.3.0
01:58 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I take it back. found it
01:58 PM Tom_L: ok
01:58 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> https://github.com/jethornton/jet/releases
01:58 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> 7 hours old
01:58 PM Tom_L: i never remember where they are because i build them here anyway
01:59 PM Tom_L: they should be the same
01:59 PM Tom_L: yep, branches are up to date
02:04 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> installed it. lookin' better.
03:03 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
03:10 PM Sansiba-T: Hi @ll
03:31 PM roycroft: today is national pizza day
03:31 PM roycroft: and i just so happens that it's pizza day at my house
03:31 PM roycroft: i'll have to make an especially good one tnight
03:31 PM XXCoder: fancy. wish I can visit lol
03:32 PM roycroft: i do have some asparagus in the fridge
03:33 PM roycroft: for this time of year that's a rather luxurious veggie
03:33 PM roycroft: so maybe that will play a part in tonight's pizza
03:35 PM Sansiba-T: Asparagus, an interesting ingredient for a pizza
03:38 PM roycroft: it pairs well with anchovies, caramelized onions, pimientos, and gorgonzola, fontina, and parmesan cheeses, for example
03:38 PM roycroft: that is a delicious pizza
03:39 PM roycroft: with a red sauce or pepper sauce
03:39 PM roycroft: on the other hand, with a white sauce, pears, gorgonzola cheese, and asparagus is delicious
03:39 PM Sansiba-T: Ok, not in my world, but bon appétit
03:40 PM roycroft: different strokes for different folks
03:41 PM Sansiba-T: New toy Day by sg https://youtu.be/azyLao5paus?si=LuisSoXZxQZQBRz3
03:43 PM * roycroft is waiting for his collet block to be delivered at long last
03:43 PM roycroft: it is allegedly out for delivery today
03:43 PM Sansiba-T: Ok
03:44 PM roycroft: not nearly as big a deal as that lathe
03:44 PM roycroft: i guess i set my goals a bit lower
03:44 PM roycroft: i have a job waiting for the collet block though, so when it arrives i shall be very happy
03:45 PM XXCoder: the lathe seems workable
03:45 PM XXCoder: you did deep cuts on what looks like steel
03:46 PM XXCoder: skipping a lot of it but looks interesting
03:46 PM roycroft: and it has a proper quick change toolpost
03:46 PM Sansiba-T: Neither do I, but I don't do machining for a living. But it's nice to see these little machines.
03:47 PM roycroft: something like that would be a nice machine for me
03:47 PM roycroft: my current lathe is an old, worn out 12x36 (300mmx900mm) jet from the early '80s
03:47 PM roycroft: i don't need that long a bed
03:48 PM Sansiba-T: I like the model 2 or 3 sizes bigger that he doesn't like. :-)
03:48 PM roycroft: the weiler primus looks more like the size that would work well for me
03:50 PM Sansiba-T: Not safe only 450mm between Centers.
03:51 PM Sansiba-T: I would not like to go below 650mm
03:51 PM Sansiba-T: But he knows exactly what he needs
03:59 PM Sansiba-T: Weiler Condor 81, Comodoro and Schaublin used to work with and for milling machines Deckel Fp1 to Fp7, Aciera and Hermle used to work with
04:02 PM Sansiba-T: All nice machines but not affordable or used ones totally worn out
04:02 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, you figure out how to connect hal pins yet?
04:05 PM Roguish: Tom_L, hey, if I have suggestions for Jet, where should I put them
04:05 PM Tom_L: here?
04:05 PM Tom_L: or on his git page maybe?
04:06 PM Roguish: his git page, on 'Issues' ??? they're not issues, just suggestions....
04:06 PM Tom_L: lemme look
04:07 PM Tom_L: create an issue maybe?
04:07 PM Tom_L: he can dismiss it if he doesn't like it :)
04:08 PM Roguish: yeah, could do that.... and that's ok, just suggestions....
04:08 PM Tom_L: i think that's what most do
04:08 PM Roguish: ok
04:08 PM Tom_L: better yet, code it and submit :)
04:09 PM Roguish: me code? that's funny
04:09 PM Tom_L: gave me an excuse to learn a little python
04:09 PM Tom_L: i'm not good but i'm better than a week ago :)
04:13 PM * roycroft is not feeling well today, unfortunately
04:14 PM roycroft: effects of the shingrix vaccine booster i got yesterday
04:14 PM Sansiba-T: My dream would be to develop a universal machine tool. Quickly switch from turning to milling. Small footprint. But the ability to machine steel as well.
04:14 PM Tom_L: just get a 9 axis lathe
04:14 PM roycroft: or do additive machining
04:15 PM Tom_L: 2 opposing spindles with live tooling
04:15 PM Sansiba-T: 9 axis? Show me an Example?
04:16 PM Tom_L: https://youtu.be/ZHGKToY5M48
04:18 PM Sansiba-T: The price tag is a little too high for home gamer, like me
04:18 PM Tom_L: maybe but they're damn cool
04:19 PM XXCoder: just glad videos on those is free lol
04:19 PM Tom_L: you'd be the first kid on the block...
04:19 PM Sansiba-T: That's right
04:22 PM Sansiba-T: It might also be problematic to get it into the tinkering room
04:22 PM Tom_L: will/way
04:23 PM Sansiba-T: Hihi
04:25 PM Sansiba-T: I like the additive manufacturing machines from Dan Gelbart
04:28 PM Sansiba-T: When it comes to machine tools, I'm more interested in designing them than working with them. I'm also looking for like-minded people?
04:30 PM Sansiba-T: It's not that easy to build a machine tool that meets all the requirements for rigidity and damping at a reasonable price
04:32 PM JT-Cave: Tom_L, I can make a hal pin just need to figure out how to connect it to a button
04:32 PM Sansiba-T: There are already enough expensive machines on the market
04:33 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i think i'm gonna switch the feed to parent.status.current_vel which is what i used in axis
04:33 PM Tom_L: maybe /60
04:33 PM Tom_L: i won't need a pin for that
04:33 PM bjorkintosh: Sansiba-T, how are you going to pay for your designs?
04:33 PM Tom_L: gonna get a steak then maybe i'll play with it
04:34 PM Sansiba-T: bjorkintosh: What does that mean?
04:35 PM bjorkintosh: you're more interested in design, right? how are the designs to be realized?
04:35 PM bjorkintosh: someone has to build them and work out the bugs and so on.
04:37 PM Sansiba-T: Probably not at all, I've just been thinking about it for a long time and I like to deal with it
04:40 PM Sansiba-T: I am used to developing special machines for the optical industry at my previous employer
04:41 PM Sansiba-T: There was no room for error.
04:41 PM Tom_L: ok that seems to work
04:42 PM bjorkintosh: Sansiba-T, so what did you do with the bad pieces?
04:43 PM Sansiba-T: Recycling?
04:43 PM bjorkintosh: scrap!
04:43 PM Sansiba-T: Possible with glass
04:43 PM bjorkintosh: zero defect is possible.
04:44 PM Sansiba-T: May be.
04:44 PM Sansiba-T: But I take it easy
04:48 PM Sansiba-T: If you do lambda/20 it's otherwise unbearable
04:49 PM CaptHindsight: Sansiba-T: past on the forums about machine design, you won't get much useful discussion here
04:50 PM CaptHindsight: it's most machine user vs designer on IRC
04:50 PM CaptHindsight: most/mostly
04:50 PM JT-Cave: Tom_L, make sure you pull first
04:50 PM Tom_L: i'm still messin with it
04:50 PM Tom_L: need to make a file that will fit in the sim boundaries
04:51 PM JT-Cave: close the ui before pulling
04:51 PM Sansiba-T: There are forums for machine tool development?
04:51 PM JT-Cave: it doesn't get updated if you don't
04:51 PM Tom_L: ok
04:51 PM Tom_L: the designer?
04:51 PM CaptHindsight: Sansiba-T: the LCNC forums
04:51 PM CaptHindsight: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/
04:52 PM Sansiba-T: Thx, But probably more users than developers?
04:54 PM CaptHindsight: most people will just assume that you're a noob or idiot, some engineers will actually engage in design useful discussions
04:54 PM Tom_L: what's the default ngc file called?
04:55 PM bjorkintosh: goodness, this makes me really nervous: https://old.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/1amumhf/thats_so_good_right/
04:56 PM JT-Shop_: axis.ngc
04:56 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:56 PM XXCoder: no enclosure, no vent, no googles
04:58 PM Sansiba-T: CaptHindsight: You're probably right about that
04:59 PM bjorkintosh: in hind sight.
04:59 PM bjorkintosh: Sansiba-T, what kind of machine tools are you interested in creating?
05:02 PM CaptHindsight: bj: "Sansiba-T> My dream would be to develop a universal machine tool. Quickly switch from turning to milling. Small footprint. But the ability to machine steel as well."
05:03 PM Sansiba-T: Thx
05:03 PM bjorkintosh: ah thank you CaptHindsight
05:03 PM bjorkintosh: I'd like to make an edm
05:03 PM bjorkintosh: (if I ever find the damned time)
05:05 PM Sansiba-T: There are a few that I like as a concept.
05:08 PM bjorkintosh: any particular ones?
05:11 PM Sansiba-T: Golmatuc md 24, uw1 or Emco Maximat Standard for Example
05:12 PM Sansiba-T: Golmatic*
05:12 PM bjorkintosh: oh those are commercial offerings aren't they?
05:13 PM bjorkintosh: https://youtu.be/Gfj0BWwBAOA
05:13 PM Sansiba-T: mostly no longer manufactured, old designs
05:15 PM Sansiba-T: Edm is exactly my working pace :-)
05:16 PM Sansiba-T: Slowly and calmly
05:18 PM Sansiba-T: No need to rush, but acceptable quality ;-)
05:22 PM bjorkintosh: super high quality, I thought?
05:24 PM Sansiba-T: No, not for my hobby
05:25 PM JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/USv8xhQHWiY?list=PLH4J0b3KfGaMGZTjSdnPqrBoB9dAhIBHK&t=1150
05:27 PM Sansiba-T: Question about the 9 axis machine presented: if a turning tool is used, i.e. the milling spindle does not rotate, is this not a disadvantage for the spindle bearings or is there a mechanism for clamping the spindle?
05:33 PM Sansiba-T: btw. I like the way he pronounces kenametal
05:35 PM Sansiba-T: Well known company for me
05:37 PM Sansiba-T: So, now I wish you a nice evening.
05:38 PM Sansiba-T: See you soon
05:49 PM * roycroft wonders if some day jt is going to get on a wooden boat to sail the world and we'll never hear from him again
05:57 PM lcnc-relay: <guido.make#0> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/USHokOIJoKWZNDfghuPqAalA
05:57 PM lcnc-relay: <guido.make#0> I am fighting my recently made A axis. It is stepper driven. Step_scale (Steps per Degree are fine --> static positioning is correct) is fine. Speed is obviously limited due to the open loop stepper.
05:57 PM lcnc-relay: <guido.make#0> G0 A3600 works without a problem. G1A360F4000 works fine as well. LinuxCNC shows commanded speed and the actual speed at 4000
05:57 PM lcnc-relay: <guido.make#0> If I start the following Gcode (Fusion 360 rotary toolpath) It starts quickly, approaching line 34 or 35 (difficult to tell) it slows down substantially. Actual speed is then shown as 4 instead of co
05:57 PM lcnc-relay: <guido.make#0> mmanded 4.xk).
05:57 PM lcnc-relay: <guido.make#0> What am I missing?
06:54 PM Tom_L: units are different from x y z to a b c
06:54 PM Tom_L: i had to adjust my rotary post for that
07:17 PM XXCoder: roycroft: or like that guy who left to be ranger for couple years, then returned
07:30 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, the actual feed seems more appropriate
07:32 PM XXCoder: ichguck or something
07:35 PM Tom_L: ichguckslive
07:58 PM XXCoder: ah yes. yeah
07:58 PM XXCoder: he was odd but nice guy
08:03 PM roycroft: ich was, indeed, an odd fellow
08:03 PM roycroft: but i liked him
08:04 PM roycroft: so at the country fair, we'd been having intense discussions about replacing our inventory database ever since the maintainers of the old one got mad, took their toys, and went home with them
08:05 PM roycroft: the person who prevailed pretty much bullied the it folks and management into using his system, which uses mongodb
08:05 PM roycroft: he swore it was way faster than any kind of sql-based database and way less resource intensive
08:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/lcgQWoSXvpJJnYcmQqPmMekJ
08:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/lcfgxvJXAzOXyvIToRnpLylx
08:05 PM roycroft: now he's ready to deploy it and i'm supposed to set up the vm for him
08:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> hmm - think dad had some extra hose around here?
08:06 PM roycroft: the old database, which was mariadb-based, with phps cripts for the front end, ran fine on a machine with 2 cores and 4GB of ram
08:06 PM roycroft: and the database consumed a whopping 3GB of disk
08:06 PM XXCoder: you could virtually run db in ram if speed was any importance
08:06 PM roycroft: i just found out that the new one requires a minimum of 8 cores, 64GB of ram, and 600GB of disk
08:07 PM XXCoder: wow that is pretty disprate on difference.
08:07 PM roycroft: the machine on which it's suppose to run has 8 cores, 64GB of ram, and 2TB of disk
08:07 PM XXCoder: skunk dunno, as I dont know you nor your dad in person ;)
08:07 PM roycroft: but there are a half dozen other virtual machines on that iron
08:07 PM roycroft: i've been asking him for months to give me the specifications for what he needs
08:08 PM roycroft: he can't be bothered, and just told me that it's not his job to calculate that stuff
08:08 PM roycroft: we just passed our budget for the year 2 weeks ago
08:08 PM roycroft: if he really needs what he claims he needs, we're going to have to do a budget supplemental, and take money from something else to pay for a new machine
08:09 PM roycroft: not only that, the drop-dead deadline for putting the new database online is march 1, because that's when booth registration begins
08:09 PM XXCoder: dont know why it would be very resource intensive when old one wasnt
08:09 PM roycroft: i doubt it really needs that much ram and cpu
08:09 PM roycroft: but he has no idea - claims to be an "engineer" - but can't be bothered to do the calculations
08:10 PM roycroft: he's adamant that the db is 600GB - 400x bigger than the old one
08:10 PM roycroft: i expected it to be bigger, because mongodb is a horrible clusterf*ck of a db engine that uses flat files and stores data redundantly
08:10 PM roycroft: but i expected maybe 10x bigger
08:10 PM roycroft: not 400x bigger
08:11 PM Tom_L: a rpi would work
08:11 PM roycroft: it's not only that
08:11 PM roycroft: we need a replication database machine onsite - the primary will live in the town office
08:11 PM roycroft: and we'll need to synchronize the two
08:11 PM Tom_L: the 'boss' gets the latest and greatest iron that never gets used
08:12 PM roycroft: it's going to cost hundreds of dollars per month to upgrade the internet connections at the two sites to handle that much traffic
08:12 PM Tom_L: seems you deal with a fussy bunch of kids..
08:12 PM roycroft: i built him a sandbox machine last november and have been pleading with him to log in, load his stuff, and see how it performs
08:12 PM roycroft: he's ignored me until now
08:13 PM roycroft: when we have 2 weeks to put the production machine online
08:13 PM Tom_L: tell him to poop or leave the pot
08:13 PM roycroft: he's trying to make me out to be the bad guy here, but fortunately i had conversations with the ed, several managers, and several board members about this months ago
08:14 PM roycroft: expressing my concerns that i don't know what the guy needs, and that he may make some last minute demands that can't be met
08:14 PM roycroft: the real issue is that he hosts the database at his house right now, and doesn't want the organization to own and host it
08:14 PM XXCoder: eh take ball home and end game thing there
08:14 PM roycroft: and this, i'm sure, is going to be his excuse not to give it to us, even though he has an agreement with us that by march 1 it will be hosed by us
08:14 PM XXCoder: high risk for company
08:15 PM roycroft: yes, the same thing as with the last database
08:15 PM roycroft: except even worse
08:15 PM roycroft: i have a backup of the last database, so at least i have those raw data
08:15 PM roycroft: we have nothing from this guy, and even if we did, it's mongodb, which hardly anyone knows how to deal with
08:16 PM roycroft: he's a director now - he got elected last fall
08:16 PM Tom_L: somebody likes him
08:16 PM roycroft: so now he has a duty of loyalty and a duty of care, both of which he's breaching with this behavior
08:16 PM roycroft: i think it was one of those least bad situations
08:16 PM roycroft: he came in last of those elected
08:16 PM XXCoder: id make automatic backup of db
08:16 PM roycroft: and barely ahead of the guy who almost got voted out
08:16 PM XXCoder: so if ball is gone, you have backup ball
08:16 PM roycroft: how can i do that when it's at his house?
08:17 PM roycroft: if we ever get it in-house, we'll have backups
08:17 PM roycroft: backups that he won't have access to destroy
08:17 PM XXCoder: cant replicate db?
08:17 PM Tom_L: no way to ssh in?
08:17 PM roycroft: our executive director is on vacation for another week and a half, so she won't be intervening in the meantime
08:17 PM roycroft: it's his server
08:17 PM roycroft: if he does not grant access we can't access it
08:18 PM roycroft: if i hacked my way in that would be a crime
08:18 PM roycroft: and a breach of *my* duty of care and loyalty
08:18 PM XXCoder: yeah that whole thing is very concerning. glad you have db backup from before
08:18 PM roycroft: i actually take those responsibilities seriously
08:19 PM roycroft: the duty of care is protecting the assets of the organization, and using them prudently
08:20 PM roycroft: duty of loyalty means anything i do regarding the organization i need to do in the best interest of the organization, and not myself
08:20 PM Tom_L: i've never done much with sql but isn't it easier?
08:20 PM roycroft: the third duty is duty of obedience - a duty to obey all laws
08:20 PM roycroft: way easier
08:20 PM roycroft: and way more efficient
08:20 PM Tom_L: i use one on my phone i tie into my business
08:20 PM roycroft: and like 98% of database programmers use some form of sql
08:21 PM roycroft: in a volunteer-based organization it is reckless to use anything but sql for a database unless there's a very compelling reason to use something else
08:22 PM XXCoder: theres plenty of good open source sql stuff
08:22 PM roycroft: anyway, my weekend is starting off wonderfully :)
08:22 PM XXCoder: mongodb dont seem to be one
08:22 PM roycroft: mongodb is no sql
08:22 PM roycroft: not
08:22 PM Tom_L: at least i've heard of sql
08:23 PM roycroft: as well, the office folks got a new volunteer to manage the office it assets
08:23 PM roycroft: i installed them a couple years ago and have been maintaining everything since, although i was promised that someone else would take over as soon as i got everything installed and dialed in
08:24 PM roycroft: so this new guy, who supposedly has great creds, got ahold of me about this new db server
08:24 PM roycroft: he said he's used sql and stuff, and knows a bit about linux, but he's never installed an operating system or built a server
08:24 PM roycroft: and he doesn't know what to do
08:25 PM roycroft: he didn't even know what a hypervisor was or a nas
08:25 PM roycroft: so guess who is going to have to do this work (while trying to train the new guy)
08:25 PM XXCoder: price was right I guess
08:26 PM roycroft: he's getting a wristband and parking pass
08:26 PM roycroft: so $200 or so worth of assets for his volunteer work
08:26 PM roycroft: that's not a lot, but it's not free
08:27 PM * roycroft sometimes wonders why he did not listen to his inner voice that was screaming "they're a bunch of flaky hippies" when he decided to get involved in managing the organization
08:27 PM XXCoder: lol
08:28 PM XXCoder: I do want to go to event even though i wouldnt benefit from half of it
08:28 PM Tom_L: smoke some weed.. it'll all look better
08:28 PM roycroft: there are interpreters everywhere
08:28 PM roycroft: every stage, every act, has an interpreter
08:28 PM XXCoder: asl ones?
08:28 PM roycroft: yes
08:28 PM XXCoder: interesting
08:29 PM roycroft: it's a big deal to us
08:29 PM XXCoder: maybe if I move south someday. long drives isnt easy for me
08:29 PM roycroft: i'm going to go make pizza and enjoy a refreshing beverage
08:29 PM roycroft: things will be better after that :)
08:29 PM XXCoder: my brain is very tired now after walking around in costco
08:29 PM * roycroft went to best buy today
08:29 PM roycroft: i really dislike that store
08:30 PM XXCoder: best buy or costco?
08:30 PM roycroft: best buy
08:30 PM XXCoder: ahh yeah not best
08:30 PM roycroft: costco is kind of meh, and i used to be a member, but it's not worth the annual fee for what i buy there
08:30 PM roycroft: if i were young and had a big family then costco would make more sense
08:31 PM Tom_L: i tried a business member for a year and dropped it
08:31 PM XXCoder: member since 2008
08:31 PM XXCoder: you almost cant read on my card now lol
08:31 PM roycroft: 2008 is probably about when i cancelled my membership
08:31 PM roycroft: it's been a long time, and 15 years ago sounds about right
08:31 PM roycroft: when my ex and i were still together it made more sense
08:31 PM XXCoder: me and my friend split cost for whole time, except for 2023 and 2024
08:32 PM roycroft: also, parking at costco is a nightmare
08:32 PM XXCoder: he cant pay anymore, since being dead is quite good excuse
08:35 PM roycroft: the only thing i need to finish my female threading tool is a forstner drill, which i ordered over a week ago
08:35 PM roycroft: i rang them up today and they said that the drill has been discontinued, but they think they still have some and are searching the warehouse
08:35 PM * roycroft thinks it's time for plan b
08:37 PM roycroft: and it just occured to me that this is a perfect shaper origin task
08:37 PM roycroft: i use the origin with a straight cutter to cut the outside diameter partway through the part
08:37 PM roycroft: use a smaller size forstner drill to remove the core
08:38 PM roycroft: and then use a standar router with a pattern cutter to complete the cut (the cut is 2" deep, and the origin can't cut that deep)
08:38 PM roycroft: i really don't use that tool enough
08:49 PM XXCoder: interesting https://youtu.be/mlqpFfxW4ls
08:50 PM XXCoder: ancient robots made from wood
09:07 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LewVEF2B_pM
09:13 PM roycroft: so the new db guy just sent me an email saying he'll just keep running the db on his server for now, since i'm unwilling to host it on our servers
09:13 PM roycroft: he both lied and showed his cards just then
09:14 PM * XXCoder facepalms
09:16 PM XXCoder: wood robot was interesting watch
09:17 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: yep its interesting indeed. I have models oif it but never did build it
09:17 PM Tom_L: lotsa time
09:17 PM XXCoder: lacking willpower
09:19 PM roycroft: one of the things the world seem to have lost due to the pandemic is motivation
09:19 PM roycroft: there is much less of it now than in the before times
09:21 PM XXCoder: for me its due to dizzyness and vision not tracking
09:21 PM XXCoder: short shop at costco and my brain is too tired to do much for day
09:23 PM roycroft: don't go to costco :)
09:23 PM XXCoder: lol sadly it happens anywhere I go to
09:23 PM mozmck: I just made a post on Latency, error finishing read, and IRQ affinity on the forum for anyone interested. Any feedback and improvements welcomed.
