01:04 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> log
01:19 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> 🙂
01:19 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> morning
02:08 AM Deejay: moin
03:43 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:32 AM Tom_L: morning
04:35 AM Tom_L: 36 / 46
04:53 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:53 AM travis_farmer: Morning
08:37 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, build time?
08:59 AM Unterhausen: Tom_L seems like having isolcpus=6,7 is better than just isolcpus=7
08:59 AM Tom_L: 8 core?
08:59 AM Unterhausen: yes
09:00 AM Unterhausen: I never tested only isolating 1 on a 4 core, always isolated 2
09:04 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, yes
09:07 AM Tom_L: #79
09:10 AM pcw---home: I think the number of isolated CPUs that improves latency depends on cache architecture
09:11 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, spindle doesn't reload scale
09:11 AM JT-Cave: ok
09:11 AM Tom_L: it saves it
09:13 AM Tom_L: JET GUI Not Installed
09:14 AM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/jet/install.html
09:14 AM JT-Cave: what card are you testing the spindle with?
09:15 AM Tom_L: is it useable yet?
09:15 AM Tom_L: 7i96s
09:36 AM JT-Shop__: it?
09:36 AM Tom_L: jet
09:36 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:37 AM Tom_L: what 5i25 daughter card supports spindle?
09:39 AM pcw---home: 7I76, 7I78 (in different ways) any card with PWM or step/dir could as well
09:39 AM Tom_L: i was just looking for one to test his spindle section
09:42 AM pcw---home: any config with PWM would work even without a daughtercard (you can normally measure PWM with just a normal slow DVM)
09:42 AM Tom_L: i think he's still working on that part
09:44 AM pcw---home: its a bit complex because you can have PWM, step/dir, Sserial driven spindles and can get really involved if you have orient
09:44 AM Tom_L: did they fix orient in 2.9?
09:44 AM pcw---home: (or worse still combined spindle/rotary axis)
09:45 AM Tom_L: i tried it in 2.8 and almost had it working
09:45 AM JT-Shop: yikes
09:45 AM Tom_L: then i think it broke after that because i tried it again with my new spindle motor and it wouldn't work
09:46 AM pcw---home: All I know is people on the forum struggling with it...
09:46 AM Tom_L: ot
09:46 AM Tom_L: it's not easy to figure out
09:46 AM Tom_L: andy has a pretty decent chart for it though
09:57 AM Tom_L: glad i saved it because i couldn't find it on the forum
09:57 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/configs/NEW_MILL_ORIENT/orient.jpg
10:01 AM JT-Shop: I need to rig up a test spindle...
10:04 AM Tom_L: i doubt i revisit orient as i have no need for it and it was 2.7 that i tried it on the DC sherline motor
10:04 AM Tom_L: i i didn't have enough control over it for those low rpm
10:05 AM Tom_L: but it did try to work
02:32 PM roycroft: nice - we have a break in the weather today, so much so that the sun is even peeking out a wee bit
02:33 PM roycroft: because of that, i did not have to spend an hour rearranging my shop to make room for my rip cuts on my bandsaw - i was able to spend 5 minutes moving a couple machines out on the driveway, and got the cuts done
02:33 PM * roycroft needs a bigger shop, but that seems to be his standard line these days
02:35 PM * travis_farmer has a bigger shop, but needs funding to be able to finish it...
02:39 PM travis_farmer: i have $110 saved for material so far (not much...), but i am going to put 100% of my tax refund into the savings for it
02:41 PM bjorkint0sh: Tom_L, re: scanning an entire plane to model it in 3d. exactly how big was the scanner?
02:44 PM roycroft: this is a kicker year, and it's going to be the biggest kicker ever!
02:44 PM * roycroft is expecting several thousand dollars in his kicker check
02:44 PM roycroft: i definitely have incentive to file my taxes on time this year, and not get an extension
02:44 PM roycroft: because the kicker check does not get mailed until the taxes are filed
02:45 PM * travis_farmer is expecting a donation from roycroft ;-)
02:46 PM roycroft: i'm starting to think that check might go towards a new lathe
02:47 PM roycroft: while i'm happy with my current one, for what i paid for it ($600), it is a very old lathe that spent its entire life before i got it in a high school machine shop
02:47 PM roycroft: so one can imagine the condition it's in
02:47 PM XXCoder: lots impacts and such
02:47 PM roycroft: it's been crashed countless times
02:47 PM travis_farmer: i'm starting to think i need to kick my father into getting the taxes to the accountant...
02:47 PM roycroft: and the ways are quite worn near the headstock
02:48 PM roycroft: probably 0.010" or so
02:48 PM roycroft: it's really difficult to turn anything accurately on it
02:48 PM travis_farmer: ouch
02:48 PM XXCoder: I wonder if its possible to refinish ways
02:48 PM XXCoder: make it nice again, when one end is way more worn than other
02:48 PM roycroft: it is, but honestly, i'd rather get a new lathe
02:48 PM Rab: You can have the bed reground, but it's not cheap.
02:48 PM roycroft: mine also has a really odd spindle thread - 38mm x8tpi, iirc
02:49 PM roycroft: and yes, i mean that
02:49 PM roycroft: it's a metric diameter and a us customary thread pitch
02:49 PM Rab: roycroft, which lathe?
02:49 PM travis_farmer: hmmm
02:49 PM roycroft: it's a jet 12x36 from the early '80s
02:49 PM Rab: ahh
02:49 PM roycroft: and there is no way to lock the chuck, so if i run the motor in reverse i do so at my peril
02:50 PM XXCoder: ow
02:50 PM roycroft: i can get a brand new 12x36 grizzly for about $5500 that has a cam lock spindle
02:50 PM roycroft: and much tighter tolerances
02:50 PM roycroft: so if the kicker is near that amount, that's where the money may go
02:51 PM travis_farmer: will that leave enough to donate to my shop? ;-)
02:51 PM roycroft: i'm happy to donate my good wishes and my advice to your shop at any time
02:51 PM travis_farmer: lol
02:51 PM XXCoder: thoughts and prayers is always free and does nothing
02:52 PM roycroft: if i'm honest, if i haven't found a new house by the time the kicker arrives i'll probably just bank the money for now
02:52 PM Rab: I inherited a South Bend 10L with heavy bed wear, I've been looking at having it reground since it was "free"...would be nice to have "like new" for $1,000-2,000, since that's well under the street price for an old 10L here. There is supposedly a place in Dallas which will do the grinding, refit the head- and tailstock, etc.
02:52 PM travis_farmer: just stiring a turd ;-)
02:52 PM roycroft: because 1. i may need it to move, and 2. if i'm going to move, it would be better to have the new lathe delivered to the new shop instead of the old one
02:53 PM roycroft: if mine were a decent, classic american lathe i'd consider having it reground
02:53 PM roycroft: but it's a jet
02:53 PM roycroft: it looks like a jet
02:53 PM XXCoder: travis btw turboss fixed that weird @discord thing. turns out if theres display dupication somewhere, discord will use longform. its stripped now
02:53 PM roycroft: an old south bend is worth restoring
02:54 PM travis_farmer: hmm, that was rude...
02:54 PM XXCoder: ?
02:54 PM internut: I have a pre-WWII Leblond 10"
02:54 PM internut: I've considered selling it
02:54 PM roycroft: that would be sweet
02:54 PM travis_farmer: i got a disconnect
02:54 PM roycroft: i'm actually pondering a 10x22 lathe
02:54 PM roycroft: i don't need 12x36
02:55 PM roycroft: but i do want a cam lock spindle and 12x36 seems to be the minimum size with that feature
02:55 PM internut: yeah, this one is bigger than 22 I think
02:55 PM Roguish: roycroft, thanks for that intrest free loan to the feds
02:55 PM internut: I've got like every accessory for it too
02:55 PM roycroft: roguish: the kicker money is state, not federal
02:56 PM roycroft: and it's a very weird thing - oregon is the only state in the union that has it
02:56 PM roycroft: we have our set income tax brackets
02:56 PM roycroft: every year the state economist forecasts how much tax revenue the state will bring in
02:56 PM roycroft: the state sets its budget accordingly
02:56 PM roycroft: if actual revenue exceeds the estimate by more than 20%, our "kicker" law requires the difference to be refunded to the taxpayers
02:58 PM Rab: We have a '90s Acra Turn 12x36 at work with a camlock spindle, it's reasonably compact and usable. Fit and finish aren't the best.
02:58 PM roycroft: the maga crowd's beliefs notwithstanding, our economy has been booming, and revenue has far exceeded the forecast over the past two years
02:58 PM roycroft: there are some 12x24 lathes with d4 camlock
02:58 PM roycroft: that would be fine for me, i think
02:58 PM roycroft: i think i've turned something longer than 24" maybe once
02:59 PM roycroft: having just said that, if i buy a 12x24 i'll probably need to turn something longer the day after it's set up
03:00 PM Rab: Table legs?
03:01 PM Rab: I have the idea that shorty lathes are less applicable to gunsmithing, so there's less demand...might be a better price
03:02 PM roycroft: i have a wood lathe
03:02 PM roycroft: it's a compact one, but i have an extension bed for it
03:02 PM roycroft: i'm unlikely to be turning metal table legs, and my wood lathe can handle wooden table legs just fine
03:03 PM roycroft: i used my new carbide insert tooling when i turned the handles for the book press, btw - the first time i used carbide tooling on the wood lathe
03:04 PM roycroft: it went exactly as i expected - i saved a heap of time by not having to stop and sharpen the tools constantly, but it left a much rougher finish than hss, so i spent a fair amount of extra time sanding
03:04 PM roycroft: but overall it was a net time savings, so a win
03:07 PM XXCoder: roy if its like that, id use carbide for rough then hss to finish it off?
03:09 PM roycroft: i may do that, xxcoder
03:09 PM XXCoder: mx master 3s isnt bad so far. little different from perforance mx mouse but usable. plus its easily replacable as its current production which perforance arent
03:10 PM roycroft: my hss tooling is crappy - it's from harbor freight, mostly
03:10 PM roycroft: but i do have a couple nice sorby tools
03:10 PM XXCoder: nice
03:10 PM roycroft: i may get a couple more for finish turning, and stick to carbide for roughing work
03:10 PM roycroft: on a completely different note
03:10 PM roycroft: some of you, i know, publish videos on youtube
03:11 PM XXCoder: off for a food run. im running out of stuff lol
03:11 PM roycroft: i'm not planning on doing that, at least not in the forseeable future, but i am about to start some projects where it would be useful for me to record the process
03:11 PM roycroft: i'm thinking about getting a decent overhead camera that can just record everything, and i'm looking at a gopro hero 10 as the camera
03:12 PM roycroft: does anyone have an opinion on that?
03:12 PM roycroft: i hated gopros because they all had wide angle lenses and everything was fisheyed, but the newer models can compensate for that
03:13 PM roycroft: ideally i'd like to get a new nikon dslr body that can do streaming video, so i can use my existing lenses, but that's a $1k+ investment, while the gopro would be <$400 with accessories
03:13 PM Roguish: roycroft, you planning on becoming a tiktoker ?
03:13 PM travis_farmer: i only have a GoPro Hero 8
03:13 PM roycroft: no way
03:14 PM roycroft: i think the hero 8 came out before they had the fisheye compensation, but maybe there's a firmware update for that
03:14 PM roycroft: is it a decent camera?
03:14 PM roycroft: is it reasonably rugged?
03:15 PM roycroft: wood turning is one thing i'd like to document
03:15 PM travis_farmer: seems to be, but i don't know about the fisheye update
03:15 PM roycroft: i'm very much a novice at it, and it would be nice to record what i'm doing so that when something works well i can go back and review how i did it
03:16 PM roycroft: i'm working on my final expense report for the country fair election, and it looks like they owe me about $400
03:16 PM roycroft: which happens to be almost exactly what the camera would cost
03:17 PM roycroft: sp ot
03:17 PM roycroft: so it will seem like it's a free camera
03:17 PM roycroft: even though it's just reimbursement for out of pocket expenses
03:19 PM travis_farmer: https://www.youtube.com/@travisfarmer216/videos my latest 3 CNC videos were done with the 8, the 4th with a GoPro Hero 5 i think...
03:22 PM bjorkint0sh: travis_farmer, nice one.
03:23 PM roycroft: the quality looks pretty good; the fisheye is annoying :)
03:23 PM travis_farmer: yes, i am not a fan of fisheye
03:23 PM travis_farmer: thanks bjorkint0sh
03:24 PM roycroft: i had completely dismissed gopro until i heard that they had fisheye compensation now
03:24 PM travis_farmer: i can't afford a new one yet, so fisheye it is :-)
03:25 PM bjorkint0sh: travis_farmer, where's the spindle from?
03:25 PM roycroft: hmm, the bestbuy in springtucky have the gopro hero 10 in stock, and i have to travel almost to springtucky today anywa
03:25 PM travis_farmer: what video?
03:25 PM roycroft: maybe i'll go look one in person
03:26 PM travis_farmer: in which video bjorkint0sh
03:27 PM bjorkint0sh: oh.
03:27 PM roycroft: i'm assuming i can get an adapter from the proprietary gopro mount to a standard 1/4"-20 camera tripod mount
03:27 PM Roguish: roycroft, the influencer.....
03:27 PM bjorkint0sh: one sec.
03:27 PM bjorkint0sh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU_rFcrkBM0
03:27 PM roycroft: i really do plan on recording the videos for personal use
03:27 PM roycroft: i'm not pretty enough for teh youtube or tiktok
03:28 PM Roguish: post 'em man.
03:28 PM travis_farmer: thats my new ATC spindle from eBay, from China
03:28 PM travis_farmer: 4.5KW
03:29 PM travis_farmer: 3PH
03:29 PM bjorkint0sh: nice.
03:31 PM travis_farmer: you think i am pretty enough for youtube, roycroft? check my voice in my camper tour video and you will see why that was my last speaking video :-) LMAO
03:34 PM roycroft: travis_farmer: i'll need to mount the camera overhead, where it will be hard to reach
03:34 PM roycroft: i know one can purchase a remote control for a gopro, but those are rather expensive
03:34 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
03:34 PM roycroft: is there a phone app that can be used to control your camera?
03:35 PM Unterhausen: I'm going to go to Travis' videos and comment about his voice
03:35 PM Unterhausen: "great voice"
03:35 PM travis_farmer: LMAO
03:36 PM travis_farmer: bjorkint0sh if you are interested, my spindle: https://www.ebay.com/itm/385203083407
03:36 PM bjorkint0sh: thank you travis_farmer
03:36 PM travis_farmer: no problem
03:37 PM bjorkint0sh: damn. it's not cheap.
03:37 PM travis_farmer: no, it was not
03:37 PM bjorkint0sh: It appears made in china is no longer a byline for chinaware
03:37 PM travis_farmer: i wish it has a RPM sensor though...
03:37 PM bjorkint0sh: I wonder what changed.
03:38 PM bjorkint0sh: they just woke up one day and decided to make quality products?
03:38 PM travis_farmer: dunno
03:38 PM Roguish: the VFD should be able to tell the rpm
03:39 PM travis_farmer: it does, but durring braking, it does not detect spindle stop
03:39 PM travis_farmer: for ATC change
03:46 PM roycroft: the chinese have always been able to make quality products
03:46 PM roycroft: they're just unwilling to lose profit by doing so
03:47 PM roycroft: if you're willing to pay for quality they're willing to produce quality
03:47 PM bjorkint0sh: I see.
03:47 PM roycroft: if you aren't willing to pay for quality they're happy to produce crap for you
03:48 PM roycroft: it seems most americans aren't willing to pay for quality
03:48 PM bjorkint0sh: well it's costly.
03:48 PM * bjorkint0sh grumbles about the cost.
03:49 PM roycroft: or not
03:49 PM bjorkint0sh: right.
03:49 PM travis_farmer: i walked bowlegged for a while after that buy ;-)
03:49 PM roycroft: if you don't want to spend $20 on a quality product that will last a lifetime, you can spend $5 on a cheap knock-off that you'll have to replace every couple years
03:49 PM roycroft: you'll have more than $20 invested in the knock-offs before long
03:50 PM bjorkint0sh: true.
03:50 PM bjorkint0sh: but consider a casual user.
03:51 PM bjorkint0sh: I once talked a friend into buying a harbor freight drill because I knew he only needed it for a short period.
03:52 PM bjorkint0sh: he put up some shelves and assembled some furniture with it. hasn't touched it since.
03:53 PM roycroft: and that's fine
03:53 PM bjorkint0sh: damn. it's been 3 years already.
03:53 PM roycroft: i often buy cheap tools
03:53 PM roycroft: when 1. i expect to abuse them,
03:53 PM roycroft: or 2. when i'm not sure i'll be using them on a regular basis
03:54 PM roycroft: i buy very few tools from harbor freight these days - i bought more in the past
03:55 PM roycroft: but i recently purchased an electric planer there for $40 instead of spending $500 on a festool, because my use case will be to plane an edge of a live-edge plank straight enough to run through the bandsaw or tablesaw to rip it
03:55 PM roycroft: something i'll do a dozen or so times/year, i anticipate
03:56 PM roycroft: if i were on a construction jobsite trimming door edges on a regular basis i'd pop for the festool
03:56 PM bjorkint0sh: of course.
03:57 PM travis_farmer: i wouldn't bring a festool to a construction jobsite... those guys are hard on tools
03:59 PM roycroft: those tools are made for hard use on job sites
04:00 PM bjorkint0sh: I had a craftsman drill someone borrowed at a jobsite. they dropped it and I thought, Sears would replace it no questions asked.
04:00 PM bjorkint0sh: of course, I didn't find the receipt.
04:00 PM travis_farmer: i have seen a guy cut nail embedded wood with what was a good cabinet miter saw. naw, those guys get a hitachachi
04:00 PM bjorkint0sh: 10 years later I found it in a notebook.
04:01 PM bjorkint0sh: doubt if sears is still around.
04:01 PM travis_farmer: *hitachi
04:01 PM JT-Shop: lowes carries some crapsman stuff
04:01 PM roycroft: sears are still around, but the craftsman guarantee is not
04:01 PM bjorkint0sh: carpsman! hahah
04:01 PM bjorkint0sh: yeah. it was a bummer.
04:01 PM roycroft: and i'm not sure it ever applied to power tools
04:02 PM bjorkint0sh: they said it did. I should have bought a hilti instead.
04:02 PM bjorkint0sh: 300 dollars more though.
04:02 PM roycroft: anyway, festool is very common on job sites
04:02 PM roycroft: and almost unversal on job sites in europe
04:02 PM roycroft: their construction track saw almost revolutionized framing
04:03 PM Unterhausen: I keep thinking about getting a cordless planer, milwaukee or dewalt is $230usd
04:03 PM travis_farmer: mostly Makita, Dewalt, and Milwalki around here
04:03 PM roycroft: if i ever do any significant framing job again, even for one job, i'll buy one
04:03 PM bjorkint0sh: never heard of festool. are they new?
04:03 PM roycroft: no, they've been around for 100 years
04:03 PM roycroft: german company, used to go by the name festo
04:04 PM roycroft: they invented the track saw
04:04 PM bjorkint0sh: geeze.
04:04 PM roycroft: they also invented the rotex sander
04:04 PM bjorkint0sh: damn. wow.
04:04 PM bjorkint0sh: I should travel more.
04:04 PM roycroft: they've been in the us since the turn of the century
04:04 PM roycroft: and folks were importing festo tools before then
04:04 PM bjorkint0sh: never seen their tools at Home depot or Lowes.
04:04 PM roycroft: no, you won't
04:05 PM travis_farmer: lol
04:05 PM roycroft: they don't sell at big box stores
04:05 PM roycroft: they sell through contractor suppliers, mosty
04:05 PM roycroft: mostly
04:05 PM roycroft: go to a high end paint store and you'll likely find their sanders
04:05 PM Unterhausen: woodcraft sells festool
04:05 PM bjorkint0sh: ah i see.
04:05 PM roycroft: hardwood lumber yards often carry them
04:06 PM roycroft: and yes, woodcraft and rockler carry festool, although not the full like
04:06 PM roycroft: line
04:06 PM roycroft: they're popular for three main reasons:
04:06 PM travis_farmer: i was just going to say rockler but couldn't remember the name :-)
04:07 PM roycroft: 1. they are very high quality (i.e. precise)
04:07 PM roycroft: 2. they are very rugged
04:07 PM roycroft: 3. they are not isolated tools, but a system
04:07 PM roycroft: you can buy lots of accessories for them
04:07 PM travis_farmer: they are a cult ;-)
04:07 PM roycroft: not really, although moreso here than in .eu
04:08 PM bjorkint0sh: huh. I was today years old when I heard about festool.
04:08 PM roycroft: admittedly, a lot of us festool sales are to rich professionals like doctors and attorneys who like to tinker in their shops over the weekends
04:08 PM roycroft: but contractors love them
04:09 PM roycroft: and in .eu, they are pretty much the standard tools on construction job sites
04:09 PM travis_farmer: if they can afford them
04:09 PM roycroft: they can
04:09 PM roycroft: they save so much time and last so long they pay for themselves very quickly
04:09 PM travis_farmer: most in this area can't
04:09 PM bjorkint0sh: roycroft, how are they compared to hilti?
04:09 PM roycroft: similar quality
04:10 PM roycroft: different markets
04:10 PM bjorkint0sh: interesting.
04:11 PM roycroft: i'd compare their sanders more to mirka than anything else
04:11 PM roycroft: festool are also all about extraction
04:11 PM roycroft: their tools have by far the best extraction on the market - a typical festool sander will have around 99% extraction
04:12 PM roycroft: their routers can have up to that, or very poor extraction, as routing jobs are so varied
04:12 PM roycroft: but festool router have better extraction than anything else on the market
04:13 PM roycroft: if you're doing finish work inside a customer's house that's huge
04:16 PM roycroft: besides sanders, i'd compare festool to metabo more than any other brand
04:17 PM roycroft: dewalt/bosch/milwaukee/riobi etc are in a class below mirka/festool/metabo
04:21 PM bjorkint0sh: I thought milwaukee was better than dewalt?
04:21 PM roycroft: that depends on whom you ask
04:21 PM XXCoder: aw ingenuity cant fly anymore. but then it went way past "win" of 5 flights to 74 flights. blade fell off
04:22 PM roycroft: but i consider all those brands to be similar
04:22 PM roycroft: the festool/mirka/metabo stuff is like snap-on
04:22 PM roycroft: dewalt/bosch/milwaukee/ryobi more like craftsman
04:23 PM roycroft: to use a wrench analogy
04:34 PM Tom_L: bjorkint0sh, they have some that will scan an entire room
04:34 PM Tom_L: some are portable
04:34 PM bjorkint0sh: oh wow.
04:34 PM bjorkint0sh: must be on a gantry or something.
04:34 PM Tom_L: some they can mount to a wing to make a composite patch for
04:35 PM Tom_L: various types
04:35 PM Tom_L: some are tripod mount etc
04:35 PM Tom_L: depending on the accuracy required
04:47 PM Tom_L: bjorkint0sh, mind you on the plane, it was taken apart piece by piece
04:47 PM bjorkint0sh: oh.
04:47 PM bjorkint0sh: of course. much easier then.
04:47 PM Tom_L: exactly how far, i don't know
04:49 PM roycroft: there exists some really good stiching software now, so one can take multiple scans and overlap them and let the stitcher combine them
04:49 PM roycroft: a gantry isn't necessarily needed
04:51 PM bjorkint0sh: it all sounds pricey.
04:51 PM roycroft: it is
04:53 PM Tom_L: yeah they had some good software
04:53 PM Tom_L: it's edu what do you expect??
04:56 PM Tom_L: they did have a gantry in the building though a wing would fit under
04:57 PM Tom_L: iirc that was part of their robotics lab
05:00 PM Roguish: Tom_L, hey, is the RPi actually strone enough to handle lcnc ??
05:00 PM Roguish: for real work
05:00 PM Tom_L: i think so as long as you don't plan to do anything else with it
05:00 PM Tom_L: ethernet
05:01 PM Tom_L: plain vanilla gui
05:01 PM Roguish: yeah, if it's totally dedicated
05:01 PM Roguish: not a game or media box
05:01 PM Tom_L: i didn't cut any parts with mine but i think it would
05:01 PM Roguish: i'm, just curious
05:02 PM Tom_L: i don't know a thing about the RPI5
05:02 PM Tom_L: but RPI4 with 8g mem
05:02 PM Tom_L: meg?
05:04 PM Tom_L: this is pretty old but i just plugged a 7i80 in place of my 7i90 to the rpi4 and did this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0OLIth_cOI
05:05 PM Tom_L: same config except for the ethernet hm2
05:05 PM Tom_L: that's why it's hanging out the control :)
05:07 PM Tom_L: i don't know about the 7c80 7c81
05:07 PM Tom_L: pretty sure those are spi interface
05:22 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/H93W-CiOT4A
05:22 PM XXCoder: interesting video on metal printing
08:41 PM roycroft: blah
08:42 PM roycroft: that slab i cut up is still 18% moisture, after two years of drying outdoors (covered), and a year in the shop
08:42 PM roycroft: i was hoping it would be more like 12% by now
08:42 PM roycroft: so i guess that project isn't going to happen for another year or so
08:42 PM XXCoder: aw
08:43 PM roycroft: unless i decide to go buy some wood for it, but i don't want to do that
08:49 PM Tom_L: when you move make a solar kiln
08:50 PM roycroft: it's on my list
08:50 PM Tom_L: https://www.wagnermeters.com/kiln-drying/solar-dried-lumber-moisture-concerns/
08:54 PM Tom_L: your climate probably doesn't help much either
09:04 PM roycroft: no, it doesn't
09:05 PM roycroft: kiln drying wood changes it in undesirable ways, but i think that a solar kiln that removes moisture slowly would be fine
09:05 PM roycroft: most kilns dry green wood to <10% in two weeks
09:05 PM XXCoder: is that purely sun powered drying?
09:05 PM roycroft: that builds up a lot of stress in the wood, and causes it to be all twisty when you cut it
09:06 PM roycroft: if i kiln dried over the course of a couple or three months i think that would be a lot better
09:06 PM roycroft: solar kilns use the sun as their heat source, but use electric fans to circulate air
09:06 PM roycroft: of course, one could install pv panels to power the fans
09:10 PM Tom_L: buy a small parcel in Arizona
09:12 PM XXCoder: too bad we dont have portals tech
09:12 PM XXCoder: that'd be far more doable with portals.
09:16 PM roycroft: i would never want to live in arizona
09:16 PM roycroft: the climate is fine here for a solar kiln
09:16 PM Tom_L: no but you could dry wood there
09:18 PM roycroft: i'd have to live there to do that
09:18 PM roycroft: i'd have to be able to tend to the kiln
09:18 PM roycroft: and it's way too far to commute
09:18 PM XXCoder: roy first step, olviously, is to invent portal tech
09:18 PM XXCoder: then you can pipe hot air to your solar kiln
09:19 PM roycroft: the first step is to find some new property where i can build a solar kiln
09:45 PM Tom_L: interesting history lesson in linuxcnc.org/files
09:45 PM Tom_L: didn't know that folder was there
09:46 PM bjorkint0sh: ah. I'd read the first one before in an attempt to hunt down the origins of G-Code.
09:47 PM Tom_L: i've seen them all but not there
09:48 PM bjorkint0sh: didn't know of the other two.
09:48 PM Tom_L: i had at least one on my local drive
09:48 PM Tom_L: didn't really look for the rest
