#linuxcnc Calendar

02:07 AM Deejay: moin
04:01 AM NoSpark: anyone here have experiance with "smart" servo drives? My yaskawa drive have all decided to stop working, and I know it is a conf param that is incorrect, however setting the drives back to default doesn't correct the issue
04:04 AM NoSpark: now when I try to jog the drive it is almost like it is missing a phase connection, and the motor just whines or erratically moves
04:11 AM jpa-: how do you know that it is incorrect conf param?
04:12 AM jpa-: but based on the symptoms, if it is conf param, i'd bet on something related to hall sensor angle / commutation angle
04:20 AM Tom_L: morning
04:20 AM NoSpark: hrmmm, doesn't look like any param like is user settable
04:21 AM NoSpark: I have confirmed that is is not one specific drive though, all the drives/servos are doing it, it look like my linuxcnc mechatrolink card overwrote the params
04:22 AM NoSpark: In theory (ha ha ha) the drive is supposed to work with the servo out of the box.... so its strange that I'm having this problem after resetting the drive.... unless the mechotrolink controller overwrote a hidden param
04:25 AM NoSpark: these servos don't have hall sensors by the look of them, so must use the serial encoder for feedback
04:49 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:49 AM JT-Cave: clock says it's above freezing and the coop is 49.7°F inside
04:54 AM pere: Anyone here understand Chinese? Is <URL: https://hosted.weblate.org/translate/linuxcnc/linuxcnc-docs/zh_Hans/?checksum=945c042e87485632 > correct? For Nowegian, I treat it as a name, not sure if chinese should do the same.
06:31 AM JT-Cave1: I have learned if you set a pyqt app to full screen you better have an exit on the menu...
06:32 AM Tom_L: haha
06:32 AM bjorkintosh: no window decorations?
06:46 AM JT-Cave1: none
06:46 AM JT-Cave1: only maximized has window controls
06:46 AM JT-Cave1: so great if you don't want someone to close an app
06:47 AM bjorkintosh: ah. kiosk mode.
06:47 AM Tom_L: good PCs still have plugs
06:53 AM Tom_L: roads are semi icy here
07:02 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:11 AM JT-Cave: Rain or freezing rain likely before 1pm, then rain between 1pm and 4pm, then rain or freezing rain after 4pm.
07:11 AM JT-Cave: nasty day here
07:11 AM Tom_L: about the same here
07:29 AM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/jet/index.html
07:36 AM Loetmichel: *MUHAHA*Just listened to an old song on youtube: "16 tons" von Tennessee Ford. First comment: "Just heard that today while working at amazon on the speaker system. Pretty sure whoever put that on the playlist took it as his two weeks notice!"
08:08 AM JT-Cave: hmm if JET GUI is full screen and it's a touch screen I need a way to exit using the touch screen...
08:10 AM bjorkintosh: long press?
08:32 AM JT-Cave: I made a button but having a problem making it invisible so time to start my chicken day
09:41 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> so, i have been severely dehydrated, and too fatigued to be able to do anything for days... i just noticed the interim plow guy pushed a pile of what is now ice up against the door of my "shop", not k
09:41 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> nowing it was my shop... so unless i get a ton of energy and use a pick-axe, i am sadly shutdown until spring...
09:41 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> i just haven't the energy to break up ice... so here's hoping for an early thaw (28F)
11:38 AM Loetmichel_ is now known as Loetmichel
11:53 AM JT-Cave: nap time
11:53 AM Deejay: sleep well :)
01:58 PM roycroft: my bondo is all dried up - i haven't used it for quite a while
01:59 PM roycroft: one would think it would store well if kept sealed up propery
01:59 PM Tom_L: the hardner doesn't keep that long anyway
02:00 PM Tom_L: jb weld :)
02:03 PM roycroft: that's my next option, but i know i'm out of it
02:03 PM roycroft: however, the jbweld store is way closer than the bondo store
02:03 PM Tom_L: and smaller quantity
02:03 PM Tom_L: you don't need that much
02:03 PM roycroft: yes, and less expensive
02:03 PM roycroft: i need a tiny bit
02:04 PM roycroft: jbweld takes longer to cure but i'm planning on applying it now and cleaning it up after work
02:08 PM JT-Shop: https://radar.weather.gov/station/kpah/standard
02:08 PM JT-Shop: we're fixing to get some precip
02:09 PM Roguish: rained here a fair bit last night.
02:12 PM Tom_L: mist all morning now it's starting to rain
02:13 PM Tom_L: the mist stuck to the road and made it a fun skating rink
02:15 PM JT-Shop: yuck
02:15 PM Tom_L: radar doesn't show much though...yet
02:16 PM Tom_L: purple must be ice
02:17 PM Tom_L: did you start over with JET or just rename it?
02:17 PM JT-Shop: I started over and just copy and paste the code then change some names
02:19 PM Tom_L: late lunch. naptime here
02:23 PM XXCoder: heavy rain here. fun!
02:29 PM skunkworks: JT-Shop: how has starlink been working for you?
02:32 PM JT-Shop: yes, it only goes off line from time to time in the early morning hours lol... just have to reboot it
02:32 PM skunkworks: huh - odd
02:33 PM skunkworks: Kids have been happy enough with it. (minecraft, roblox and fortnite mostly)
02:34 PM skunkworks: They sent a firmware update that borked a bunch of the dishes. Put in a ticket - they said I needed new hardware so now I have an extra dish.. But they pushed new firmware and it was working agian.
02:35 PM Unterhaus__ is now known as Unterhausen
02:35 PM skunkworks: can't complain
02:37 PM skunkworks: JT-Shop: early morning is usually firmware updates.
02:44 PM JT-Shop: did you have the gen 1 dish?
02:44 PM skunkworks: yes - still do. But have a gen 2? dish in box now
02:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/ECbGfpNSKRPSbjgXbrPTyhgc
02:46 PM roycroft: does starlink go down when it rains hard?
02:46 PM JT-Shop: no
02:46 PM skunkworks: no
02:46 PM * roycroft used to have that problem when he had directv
02:46 PM roycroft: starlink must be using different frequency bands than the satellite tv vendors
02:47 PM skunkworks: during that snow storm - my signal went down to 20% - kids didn't notice
02:47 PM JT-Shop: the sats are a lot closer
02:47 PM skunkworks: right - they are low earth orbit.
02:47 PM roycroft: i guess they would have to be to have tolerable latency
02:48 PM roycroft: the jbweld store were out of jbweld, but they had a loctite epoxy product made for metals
02:48 PM skunkworks: yes - a coworker finally got starlink after his dsl went down again.. He is pretty happy with it - he is a big gamer. He would certainly rather have fiber - but it gets him by
02:49 PM roycroft: it looks and works like jbweld
02:49 PM roycroft: i'll find out in a while if it's ad hard as jbweld
02:49 PM roycroft: starlink is kind of expensive
02:49 PM roycroft: but if it's your option it's your option
02:50 PM roycroft: it's not good about local channels either
02:50 PM roycroft: i asked about that
02:51 PM skunkworks: I guess it depends on what you have access to.. Hardware up front cost is high - but $120 a month is cheaper than my parents were paying for 1mbX256kbs dsl.. (plus phone)
02:51 PM roycroft: er, scratch that, i was thinking of a different provider who do both sat tv and internet
02:51 PM roycroft: i have cablemodem service
02:51 PM roycroft: 200Mb/s down for $50/month
02:52 PM skunkworks: it is way way better than hughsnet and viasat..
02:52 PM JT-Shop: yup
02:53 PM skunkworks: but yes - cable would probably most of the time be better
02:53 PM skunkworks: unless the service is really bad.
02:54 PM skunkworks: Been really happy with it.. I can make phone calls over it - dial into work.. Even have camera so I can keep an eye on the farm..
02:54 PM skunkworks: (well - i pay 140 a month so I have a public ip...)
02:57 PM skunkworks: it went from worrying about the internet - to forgetting about it.
02:59 PM JT-Shop: you have a fixed ip on starlink?
03:00 PM skunkworks: You can't get a static ip.. but they kinda say - it probably won't change..
03:01 PM skunkworks: otherwise you are behind some sort of nat..
03:03 PM JT-Shop: what is a public ip?
03:03 PM skunkworks: normal isp's - you have a dhcp ip address - that is publicly accessable..
03:05 PM skunkworks: for the basic starlink - you don't get a public ip address.. so if you are trying to get to your network from the internet - you can't
03:06 PM skunkworks: (unless you use something server based like gotomypc or something)
03:07 PM skunkworks: so - for an extra 20 a month - starlink gives you a publicly accessable ip address..
03:07 PM skunkworks: not static - it could change - but for me it doesn't matter..
03:07 PM skunkworks: I feel like I am not making sense.
03:11 PM roycroft: that makes starlink virtually unusable for me
03:11 PM roycroft: i need to both be able to vpn into my network and access external networks from a static ip
03:11 PM roycroft: i cannot do my job without the latter
03:12 PM roycroft: my comcast link is dhcp, but it's what i call a "persistent" ip
03:12 PM roycroft: i.e. it does not change unless i change my physical equipment (my firewall, not my cablemodem, as the cablemodem is in bridged mode)
03:13 PM skunkworks: sure - most people are upset that they cannot have a static IP.. but so far - having a public dhcp IP has been fine for me.
03:13 PM roycroft: so whenever i'm going to change my firewall, which is once every few years, i need to add a back door acl to one of my network elements which has access to the others, switch the equipment, change all my acls (which takes about a day), and then close the back door
03:14 PM roycroft: i would not be upset about it
03:14 PM roycroft: i would just not order that service to begin with
03:14 PM skunkworks: You don't have to :)
03:14 PM roycroft: i know a lot of folks get upset when a vendor doesn't offer what they want
03:15 PM roycroft: i'd be upset if the vendor told me i could get a static ip and then refused to provide one
03:15 PM roycroft: but if they tell me up front that they don't do that then i have the information i need to make my choice
03:16 PM * roycroft also finds, puzzlingly, that the folks who get upset about that kind of stuff are usually the same folks who get upset about too much "government regulation"
03:16 PM skunkworks: lol.. agreed
03:17 PM roycroft: my boss has tried to explain it to me
03:17 PM roycroft: he hates government
03:17 PM roycroft: and says that people and businesses should be left free do do what they want without regulation
03:17 PM roycroft: he complains about big corporations doing things that put him at a disadvantage as a small business
03:18 PM roycroft: when i mention that government is what is supposed to keep the corporations in check he comes up with some response like "they should just behave better and if the government got off their backs they would"
03:19 PM roycroft: always some variation on that that does not make any sense
03:19 PM XXCoder: ah yes to solve high crime city crime problem, remove police
03:19 PM roycroft: "defund the police" is about the stupidest thing the democrats have ever bought into
03:20 PM XXCoder: its bad misnomier
03:20 PM roycroft: even though it doesn't mean what it appears to
03:20 PM XXCoder: indeed
03:20 PM XXCoder: I almost literally facepalmed when I first saw the term
03:21 PM XXCoder: (after finding what it really meant)
03:21 PM roycroft: it would be like using "let women kill their babies" as their pro-abortion rights slogan
03:23 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/qIVYYp6T7RI interesting. wonder how useful it would be for air cooling mill tool or whatever
03:23 PM roycroft: scotus just ruled that the biden adminstration can remove the razor wire from the rio grande
03:24 PM roycroft: they have not ruled on the case yet, but they did remove the injnction
03:47 PM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Anyone used userkins? it seems the python interface doesn't update, which looks like motion.traj doesn't update from it?
03:47 PM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Which I'm guessing is why the examples all have GUI position pins...
05:32 PM JT-Shop: nite
05:34 PM Tom_L: nite
06:34 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/tlRZejnHaLBuXKcVSFdjQgQj
06:34 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> I designed and built one of these 5-6 years ago. It works okay but heat is a problem. As soon as you try to get a useful volume/pressure out of it, it tends to melt down even when printed with nylo
06:34 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> n. 3d printing also doesn't have good enough tolerances to keep the rotor/housing and rotor/rotor gaps small enough to build high pressure.
06:35 PM Tom_L: blowers do run warm
06:35 PM Tom_L: machine one from alum :)
06:35 PM Tom_L: or SS
06:35 PM Tom_L: and they're noisy
06:38 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> The compressor in my shop is a twin screw and the loudest thing about it is the inverter whine.
06:39 PM XXCoder: zinc interesting!
06:40 PM Tom_L: yeah my bud kept his in a room by itself
06:40 PM XXCoder: I guess compressing do increase heat due to umm hooke law? or is that spring
06:41 PM XXCoder: ah yes boyle law
06:41 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> Ideal gas law. PV = nRT
06:41 PM XXCoder: hooke is indeed spring
07:11 PM Tom_L: zincboy_ca_on, what did you model that in?
07:37 PM jdh: is there a list of known 'ok' hardware?
07:38 PM Tom_L: not a new one
07:39 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> Alibre design. The lobe profiles were generated using a C# program.
07:39 PM Tom_L: jdh, https://forum.linuxcnc.org/18-computer/46292-current-motherboards
07:41 PM Tom_L: jdh, my test pc is a gigabyte B250M-DS3H-CF and it's decent
07:42 PM Tom_L: socket 1151
07:42 PM jdh: for pport stepgen?
07:42 PM Tom_L: i've never used pp so i can't say for sure
07:43 PM Tom_L: that would use RTAI probably and it's currently set up with preempt-rt
07:44 PM jdh: 2.6.32-122-rtai #rtai SMP Tue Jul 27 12:44:07 CDT 2010
07:45 PM Tom_L: the new RTAI looks as good as the one on wheezy which was 3.something
07:46 PM jdh: that box only has 4gb.
07:47 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/RTAI_TEST/RTAI_I5_Histogram.png
07:47 PM Tom_L: that was on the new install i used on the mill pc
07:47 PM Tom_L: i set it up on a test pc here first and that was the result of that pc
07:48 PM Tom_L: the gigabyte mb i listed above
07:48 PM Tom_L: it's probably as good as any you'll find
07:49 PM Tom_L: 12.2us on the base thread which is what you're interested in i think
07:52 PM jdh: I don't really want to build a computer. I'd like to just click and buy one.
07:53 PM jdh: is all integrated video still bad?
07:53 PM Tom_L: some have used those small desktop ones i forget the brand but they were cheap
07:53 PM Tom_L: HP maybe?
07:53 PM Tom_L: i'm using the stock video on mine on both pcs
07:53 PM jdh: There are lots of small ones, which I would like, but they all have integrated video
07:54 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight, what were those cheap boxes?
07:54 PM jdh: but, still need a p-port also. unlikely on the tiny ones
07:55 PM flyback is now known as carl_sagan
07:56 PM carl_sagan is now known as flyback
07:57 PM jdh: https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Optiplex-Business-Desktop-Quad-Core/dp/B07R1NZRQ7
07:58 PM jdh: like that with a pcie p-port
08:00 PM Tom_L: yeah something like that
08:01 PM Tom_L: does that have room for a pcie card?
08:18 PM Tom_L: andypugh, is the linuxcnc package different for the RTAI kernel? i noticed the DL page shows a separate deb for it
08:19 PM Tom_L: i considered adding the RTAI to my test pc but have the preempt-rt kernel currently
08:20 PM XXCoder: any tests on rpi5 on how good it is for linuxcnc?
08:20 PM Tom_L: don't own one
08:21 PM XXCoder: yeah, just wondered if anyone reported anything
08:21 PM Tom_L: there's a dl for it
08:21 PM XXCoder: sadly dont have rpi5 also
09:50 PM CaptHindsight: jdh: integrated video hasn't been an issue with latency since 2008 or so
09:53 PM CaptHindsight: https://linuxgizmos.com/low-profile-radxa-x2l-sbc-featuring-intel-j4125-and-rp2040-microcontroller/ $50-80 based on options, seems perfect for Remora
