12:07 AM Contract_Pilot: China Supplier trying to tell me China Post International Small Parcel for 150grams is $35 USD ummm no more like $8 if that.
12:44 AM Contract_Pilot: LOL yea, We give you best price discount
12:44 AM Contract_Pilot: of .02 ea
03:09 AM Deejay: moin
04:22 AM Tom_L: morning
04:22 AM Tom_L: -1°F with a whoppin 23°F for the high
04:47 AM JT-Cave: 5°F Becoming Sunny High: 19°F I'm hoping the sun cleans off the driveway by the time we have to leave today
06:02 AM NoSpark: Just had hail storm here, lastest for 205mins, and we got 40mm of rain. One of our water tanks got ripped of it's stand and sent 750m uphill. if that wasn't weird enough, its the middle of summer, and this morning it was 41degrees (about >105degF?) and right after the storm passed it went back to 40degrees while the ice melted.... this weather is bad
06:02 AM NoSpark: *205mins = 25mins
06:02 AM NoSpark: 30K homes without power
06:04 AM Gothia1 is now known as Gothia
08:34 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Has anyone ever put effectively a skill saw on a mill? I have a tool changer that picks up a 90degree cutter with a 12" saw blade that can pivot on C axis.
08:35 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Thinking I'm gonna have to do a kinematics component to set positions properly. Doesn't look like the tool offsets will apply nicely.
08:41 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Or use 5axiskins, but leave out B Axis?
10:05 AM roycroft: today is the last day of sub-freezing temperatures, but we're due for another big ice storm before the temperature rises and it turns into rain
10:21 AM Roguish: was supposed to be dry today, but it's wet outside right now, and mid 40's F
10:23 AM Roguish: radar looks like the clouds will pass through soon
10:23 AM Roguish: https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap?lat=37.785&lon=-122.422&zoom=8&radar=1&wxstn=0
10:25 AM Roguish: and it's like 9 at JT's
10:25 AM Roguish: guess I shouldn't bitch too much
10:27 AM Roguish: Eugene at 20F
10:27 AM Roguish: https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/or/eugene
10:29 AM Roguish: well, the Vivek and Asa shows are finally done
10:31 AM roycroft: yes, it's still bloody cold here
10:31 AM roycroft: i don't mind that so much though
10:32 AM roycroft: i need some brass screws, and i'm almost out of coffee
10:33 AM roycroft: but until the ice goes away i can go nowhere
10:47 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, big fix on the scale calculator
11:15 AM lcnc-relay: <oleksandr7639> Hello, i am searching a Scotta(Remora developer) contact for a private consultation, please advice how to contact him
11:42 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, wasn't calculating right?
11:45 AM Tom_L: PR #72 up
11:56 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, maybe you should reword the drop down for the calculator 'copy to' to reflect the tab name changes to the joints
11:57 AM Tom_L: could go either way i suppose since the axis is still listed under the drive tab
12:01 PM Tom_L: tested both debs built with the cross compiler method. both work
12:22 PM CaptHindsight: 0F (-18C) and sunny
12:22 PM CaptHindsight: the wind in your face feels like a sander
12:23 PM Deejay: free face peeling?
12:24 PM CaptHindsight: if you spend enough time in it
12:24 PM Deejay: hehe
12:25 PM Deejay: pretty cold. here it is about -3C at the moment
12:32 PM CaptHindsight: Chicago area here, Are you somewhere in the EU?
12:35 PM Tom_L: iirc Germany
12:47 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Tom_L when I added the angular I screwed up some variable names
12:47 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.wunderground.com/weather/de/cologne
12:49 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Tom_L got a screen shot, I'm on my phone :(
12:53 PM Unterhausen: we got an unexpected 3" of snow here at the home of accuweather
12:54 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> We did get 3"
12:56 PM CaptHindsight: just drifting snow here
12:59 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Sunny 10°F
01:04 PM roycroft: the ice storm is scheduled to commence any moment now
01:04 PM roycroft: but the sun is trying hard to peek out of the clouds, so i don't know what's going to happen
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> I thought you already had an ice storm
01:06 PM roycroft: we did
01:06 PM roycroft: but we're having another one today
01:06 PM roycroft: one as the arctic front came in, and another as it moves out
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> That sucks
01:07 PM roycroft: there is still a good 3cm of solid ice on the roads and sidewalks
01:07 PM roycroft: yeah, i cannot leave the house
01:07 PM roycroft: even walking out to my car is dangerous
01:07 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> That's pretty bad
01:07 PM roycroft: but the temperature should rise above freezing around 7pm this evening
01:07 PM roycroft: and then the big thaw can finally begin
01:08 PM roycroft: pretty much everything is shut down again
01:08 PM roycroft: the supermarkets are open
01:08 PM roycroft: the buses are not running, no trash collection or mail delivery
01:10 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> I saw the mail lady turning down 521 as we left. I hope 3m 1300 doesn't freeze!
01:11 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> I keep a couple of bags of ice melt on hand because if you wait until the ice is predicted it's too late
01:25 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
01:25 PM roycroft: i stocked up my pantry before the storm arrived
01:25 PM Unterhausen: what was the program 30 years ago that could fool people into thinking it was human?
01:26 PM roycroft: drilling will be a lot easier than tapping, for sure
01:26 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Makes sense now
01:26 PM CaptHindsight: neat
01:27 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Get Tom_L to mill the threads
01:27 PM roycroft: i made mine out of ash, with walnut trim
01:27 PM roycroft: it's almost finished - i'll post pics when it's done
01:27 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Cool
01:28 PM roycroft: finding those balls has been the most difficult part of the whole project
01:30 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Be easier to drill and tap a square stock then turn it round
01:31 PM roycroft: i don't have a ball turning jig for my lathe, and did not want to make one
01:31 PM roycroft: but if i did that i'd start with round bar, not square stock
01:32 PM roycroft: mine looks more like darbin orvar's than the picture i posted a bit ago
01:32 PM roycroft: i used an old face vise screw that i bought 30ish years ago when i was going to build a scandanavian workbench
01:33 PM roycroft: i'm so glad i never finished that bench - my split roubo is such a better design, imo
01:33 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vTo9hQS-T4
01:34 PM roycroft: you don't need to watch the whole video - she shows the completed press at the very beginning
01:38 PM XXCoder: roy cnt wait to see it completed.
01:39 PM roycroft: maybe i'll post a pic after everything but the handle is done, because it's going to be at least a couple weeks before the handle is done
01:39 PM roycroft: the rest should be assembled by tomorrow or thursday
01:39 PM XXCoder: huh she hammerd the screws in?
01:40 PM roycroft: the tried and true varnish oil is taking a very long time to cure in this weather
01:43 PM XXCoder: most of it was cool, its the hammering in part that confused me
01:49 PM * roycroft doesn't remember any hammering
01:49 PM roycroft: i haven't watched that in a long time though - what was she hammering in?
01:49 PM XXCoder: she hammers 4 screws into wood
01:50 PM XXCoder: 7:40
01:52 PM roycroft: oh
01:52 PM roycroft: those aren't screws - they're bolts
01:52 PM roycroft: she drilled through holes, and there are nuts on the underside
01:52 PM XXCoder: oh must have missed the nuts on other side
01:53 PM roycroft: she didn't put that in the video
01:53 PM roycroft: but you can see them next to the bolts while she's drilling the holes
01:53 PM roycroft: i mounted mine differently - i mounted the acme screw nut from below
01:54 PM roycroft: and just used some small wood screws to hold it in place, because the pressure of the screw will push the nut up into the top support
01:59 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Is this the wood acme nut you made?
02:07 PM Unterhausen: I have a guitar side press, so I can press very small books
02:09 PM roycroft: no
02:09 PM roycroft: the wooden screws/nuts are for another project
02:09 PM roycroft: which i'll be working on as soon as this one is done
02:16 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> I have a 50 ton press so I can fold big books
02:20 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Heading home now
02:20 PM XXCoder: big books indeed lol
02:21 PM XXCoder: I wonder how big book that car parts press (million tons) could make lol
02:31 PM roycroft: a while ago i got two boxes of burl veneer sheets
02:32 PM roycroft: while i've wanted a book press for quite some time, what gave me the impetus to finally build it was those veneer sheets - they're really wavy, and i'll need to flatten them before i can use them
03:02 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, the idea was to match the 'select' dropdown text: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/mesact/scale_calc.png
03:02 PM Tom_L: with the drive tab: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/mesact/scale_calc2.png
03:02 PM Tom_L: instead of the axis letter
03:03 PM Tom_L: but like i said, it could go either way
03:05 PM Tom_L: if you used the axis/joint as it is, it might be confusing as to where the result went
03:06 PM Tom_L: took me a sec to recall which was my A axis
03:07 PM Tom_L: i don't recall why you changed the tab names to Drive
03:15 PM Tom_L: ... for the analog stuff maybe
04:05 PM Unterhausen: anyone have a good supplier for small magnets?
04:06 PM Tom_L: i did
04:07 PM Tom_L: the rare earth ones anyway
04:11 PM Tom_L: https://pptholt.com/Search/Brand/FORCEFIELD#group=jplist-productlist&paging=0-12
04:11 PM Tom_L: different url but that was the name of them
04:12 PM Tom_L: maybe not the same place now
04:13 PM Tom_L: https://www.magnetsource.com/collections/neodymium-l1?page=1
04:14 PM Tom_L: Unterhausen, how big?
04:14 PM Tom_L: i pulled some from an onld hdd for a gate hold
04:15 PM Unterhausen: yeah, I want to secure my chisels with them, not stick my chisels permanently to the case
04:16 PM Tom_L: https://www.magnetshop.com/
04:16 PM Tom_L: you may not want that anyway... wouldn't it somewhat magnetize them?
04:17 PM Tom_L: a small neo might do ok just don't try a 3" one or you won't pry it loose
04:17 PM Scopeuk: For storing chisels they make magnetic knife rails for professional kitchens, maybe something that could be repurposed
04:18 PM Tom_L: make a 'case' for them like a paper tray on the wall only to fit the blades
04:18 PM roycroft: i use those in my kitchen
04:18 PM roycroft: i've thought about using them for chisels
04:18 PM Tom_L: i keep my 123 blocks that way
04:19 PM Tom_L: magnetic sign strips
04:19 PM Tom_L: usually are adhesive on the back
04:19 PM Tom_L: https://www.magnetshop.com/flexible-magnets.html
04:20 PM Tom_L: they even have some you can label
04:21 PM Tom_L: collect those refrigerator magnets and repurpose :)
04:23 PM Unterhausen: I have worried about magnetizing my chisels, but then realized if I use them on steel all bets are off anyway
04:23 PM Tom_L: what about sharpening??
04:23 PM Unterhausen: unlikely to pick up any steel then either
04:25 PM Tom_L: refrigerator seal magnets
04:25 PM Tom_L: the list goes on
04:26 PM roycroft: my chisels are in drawers currently
04:26 PM roycroft: i'm going to make inserts for the drawers to keep them from rolling around and banging into each other, but i've not gotten around to that yet
04:26 PM roycroft: for now, i just made tip guards out of masking tape to protect them
04:26 PM XXCoder: I pictured a wood block chisels holder thing, like one in kitchen for knives, but im pretty sure wood'd rust chisels
04:28 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, that's somewhat what i meant only for the wall
04:28 PM XXCoder: yea
04:28 PM Tom_L: could be in a cabinet drawer
04:31 PM Unterhausen: I have mine in drawers too. Going to build a tool cabinet though
04:32 PM Unterhausen: I'm tired of the current setup, all my planes are on bookshelves
04:32 PM roycroft: i'm holding off on any of that kind of shop infrastructure in case i end up moving to a new shop soon
04:32 PM * roycroft figures another couple months before there's real options
04:33 PM Unterhausen: not a bad idea. I don't think I'm moving and the current situation is insupportable
04:33 PM Unterhausen: that's French for intolerable
04:34 PM Tom_L: :)
04:36 PM roycroft: well this could not be better news
04:36 PM roycroft: instead of another ice storm, it just started raining
04:36 PM XXCoder: just got ice rain warning here, but I dont think it will even rain
04:36 PM roycroft: it's still -3, but the rain is already starting to melt the ice
04:37 PM * JT-Shop stokes the fires with some fresh firewood
04:39 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, ^^^ all those comments.. hindsight i think i'd just leave it like it is
04:40 PM roycroft: i think we might survive this storm after all
04:41 PM roycroft: the local radio stations are all back on air with full power as well
04:45 PM * roycroft wonders if the roads will be drivable in a couple hours
04:45 PM roycroft: i'd really like to go get some fresh food for dinner
04:45 PM Tom_L: good idea
04:45 PM roycroft: pantry food is getting tiresome
04:46 PM Tom_L: doesn't the ice prevent that?
04:46 PM roycroft: i could survive for at least a couple months with what i have in the pantry and freezer, but fresh is always good
04:46 PM roycroft: yeah, but it's raining now
04:46 PM Tom_L: and freeze again tonight?
04:46 PM roycroft: so the ice will start turning into slush, and i can drive in slush
04:46 PM roycroft: no
04:46 PM roycroft: it's actually going to get warmer as the night progresses
04:47 PM roycroft: the arctic air mass is leaving us, and we'll be back to normal weather by tomorrow
04:47 PM roycroft: highs in the low teens and lows around 7-8
04:48 PM roycroft: it's now just a matter of how long it takes for the ice to start melting away
04:58 PM roycroft: so i did a trial assembly of my book press and did a test by putting a scale in it
04:58 PM roycroft: with very little effort and no strain on the press it put 250kg of pressure on the scale, the max that the scale can handle
04:59 PM roycroft: i'm sure i could easily double or quadruple that
04:59 PM * roycroft considers it a successful build
05:11 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, I agree the combobox should have card, axis and drive like 7i76 X Drive 2
05:16 PM Tom_L: didn't know if all that would fit
05:18 PM JT-Shop: looks like it will, I'll test in the morning
05:18 PM JT-Shop: just wrapping up out here
05:18 PM Tom_L: the new build thing seems to work great
05:18 PM JT-Shop: cool
05:19 PM Tom_L: i dunno how to do a git repo sync remotely or i'd add that to it
05:19 PM JT-Shop: I don't even know what you said LOL
05:20 PM Tom_L: as it is, i log into my github and sync it with yours before building
05:20 PM JT-Shop: ah ok
05:20 PM Tom_L: i'd imagine you can do that remotely
05:20 PM Tom_L: but i don't know how
05:20 PM JT-Shop: nor do I know
05:20 PM Tom_L: so the whole thing could be a script
05:20 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:22 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:22 PM Tom_dev: https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/create-and-sync-git-and-github-repositories/
05:22 PM Tom_dev: maybe something there
05:23 PM Tom_dev: i do the 'git fetch origin to get it to my local pc but that's from my repo
05:25 PM JT-Shop: dusk here in a few minutes so gotta herd the hens inside
05:27 PM roycroft: one of my neighbors has fired up his pickup and is removing the ice from the windows
05:27 PM roycroft: i think he's going to try to go somewhere
05:27 PM roycroft: i'll watch to see how successful that is
05:32 PM Tom_dev: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/15056327/how-do-i-synchronise-two-remote-git-repositories
05:46 PM JT-Cave: finally everything is taken care of so now for a small break
05:46 PM JT-Cave: and btw I just released 2.1.1
05:46 PM Tom_dev: ok
05:47 PM Tom_dev: if you pull the last debs i'll build it
05:47 PM Tom_dev: unless you want me to cancel those
05:47 PM JT-Cave: did that first
05:47 PM Tom_dev: ok
05:48 PM Tom_dev: let's see how long this takes :)
05:48 PM JT-Cave: ok
05:49 PM Tom_dev: 73 ready
05:50 PM Tom_dev: just a sec
05:50 PM Tom_dev: did you update the ver?
05:51 PM Tom_dev: yeah the ver is right on the app
05:52 PM Tom_dev: but the build still shows 2.1.0
05:52 PM JT-Cave: I just pushed the debian file
05:52 PM Tom_dev: well i may have been ahead of you then
05:52 PM Tom_dev: the installed shows 2.1.1
05:53 PM Tom_dev: want another one?
05:53 PM JT-Cave: just by a few minutes
05:53 PM JT-Cave: yup
05:57 PM Tom_dev: ok it's there
05:59 PM JT-Cave: all right now we are all up to date, I'll look at the combobox in the morning
06:12 PM Tom_L: haha fixed it i see
06:12 PM Tom_L: or partially anyway
06:12 PM JT-Cave: done
06:13 PM XXCoder: interesting that half as interesting covers books today, considering earlier topic here lol. this video is about "librarybound" standard to last over 100 years. https://youtu.be/06wObrv15fc
06:13 PM Tom_L: i'm trying to sync my fork with yours with bash
06:13 PM Tom_L: in case something odd happens...
06:13 PM Tom_L: :)
06:18 PM * JT-Cave calls it a night
06:43 PM roycroft: well i got my car all deiced, and things are getting slushy outside
06:43 PM roycroft: i'm heading off to market to get some food
06:43 PM roycroft: if you never hear from me again, you'll know that was a bad decision
06:45 PM XXCoder: what happened to roy? been a while
06:55 PM jdh: I have an old 2.5.1? install on sid/squeeze that runs fine. Atom CPU D525., RTAI. Tried installing a current version off the install CD which is I assume prempt-rt. Both the latency test and running linuxcnc lock up the machine. Is that a normal issue?
07:01 PM solarwind: So happy that the DCD800 has a mechanical clutch
07:02 PM solarwind: They never mention it in the specs/manuals
07:34 PM roycroft: i survived
07:34 PM roycroft: it was quite the adventure, though
07:35 PM roycroft: there are trees and limbs down all over the place - i had to take two detours to get to the market
07:35 PM roycroft: and it was like driving in portland
07:35 PM roycroft: washboard ice on the arterials
07:36 PM roycroft: but i had good traction as long as i was able to drive fast enough
07:36 PM roycroft: it's also 0 degrees finally, and it's still raining
07:46 PM solarwind: I think you mean hailing, you silly goose. That's well below the freezing point of water
07:49 PM XXCoder: solarwind: ground temperate and sky can be different
07:49 PM roycroft: the triple point of water is right around 0 degrees
07:49 PM solarwind: I'm just trying to mess with roycroft lol
07:49 PM solarwind: implying he meant 0°F
07:50 PM roycroft: 0.01 degrees, or 273.16k, to be more precise
07:51 PM roycroft: if it were 0f here there would be no hail or snow or ice storm or anything like that, because the only times it's ever gotten that cold have been when there are no clouds
08:49 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:10 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:17 PM XXCoder: roycroft: raining here now. warning for ice but I dont see any'
11:25 PM Unterhausen: shouldn't have looked at the forecast. Going to be bitterly cold for the next 4 days, and once it gets above freezing it's going to start raining
11:51 PM roycroft: it's raining lightly here
11:51 PM roycroft: but the important thing is that it's above freezing and will remain above freezing
11:52 PM Unterhausen: I feel like we don't always get the weather from the pacific nw here after a delay, but it seems like that's what the forecast is showing
11:53 PM roycroft: our weather systems rarely affect anywhere east of the rockies
11:53 PM Unterhausen: it has to go somewhere
11:53 PM roycroft: but what we're dealing with now was caused by an arctic air mass that came way down south
11:53 PM XXCoder: yeah it doesnt
11:53 PM XXCoder: mountains eats all clouds
11:54 PM roycroft: and affected most of the united states - it's the same system that caused all the snow and cold back east
11:54 PM roycroft: exactly, xxcoder
11:54 PM XXCoder: yep. its why east is generally low water
11:54 PM Unterhausen: this was a very big polar vortex
11:54 PM roycroft: central oregon weather is totally different to our weather
11:55 PM roycroft: because the cascades stop most of the moisture from the ocean
11:55 PM Unterhausen: usually it's not that big
11:56 PM Unterhausen: unusual for the entire US to be affected. Like when a polar vortex hits texas, it misses pennsylvania
11:56 PM roycroft: anyway, we're coming out of it
11:56 PM roycroft: it may take 2-3 days for all this ice to go away completely, but the roads are drivable now, mostly
11:56 PM XXCoder: yeah if center is affected, it almost never affects west, due to again, mountains lol
11:56 PM roycroft: we'll probably still have trees coming down for a while, but most of that damage has been done
11:57 PM XXCoder: couple years ago horrible one, here was barely affected at all
11:57 PM Unterhausen: when I lived in Utah, I would have wanted your storm systems to hit us.
11:57 PM Unterhausen: last couple of years I was there, snow was light enough that Utahns were dying on the ski slopes
11:57 PM Unterhausen: they don't know how to ski ice
11:58 PM roycroft: i do
11:58 PM Unterhausen: you aren't a utahn
11:58 PM roycroft: you sit in the lodge with a big sweater on, sip on a hot toddy, and chat up the women
11:58 PM Unterhausen: normally they get fresh snow every three days
11:58 PM roycroft: you only go out on the slopes when there's fresh powder
11:59 PM Unterhausen: 4 day old snow, they are lost
11:59 PM XXCoder: just go to powder room to freshen up
11:59 PM Unterhausen: I think I saw they have good snow this year though
