12:03 AM CaptHindsight: who makes high quality power tools?
12:16 AM CaptHindsight: nobody, since nobody would be willing to pay for them
02:07 AM Deejay: moin

03:19 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> good morning
05:11 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:36 AM Tom_L: morning
06:21 AM JT-Cave: warming up already went from 4-5°F
07:35 AM JT-Cave: pcw-home, on a 7i76 to connect external 5v I just connect 5vdc to either TB3 21 or 22 and 0vdc to either 23 or 24?
07:52 AM * JT-Cave starts his chicken day...
08:01 AM solarwind: GUys
08:01 AM solarwind: I'm going to give you all a water cooler
08:02 AM solarwind: Tom_L you can convert yours into a chiller for your water cooled spindle
08:02 AM solarwind: XXCoder and yours into a chiller for your water cooled hotend
08:05 AM solarwind: Deejay where do you live?
08:06 AM solarwind: GMT +1?
08:21 AM Tom_L: holding steady at 2°F
08:21 AM Tom_L: solarwind, i used an ice bucket on the sherline spindle :)
08:21 AM Tom_L: but thanks
08:34 AM JT-Shop: crap the door to the garage was left open a bit last night and it's 34°F inside
08:34 AM Tom_L: build?
08:34 AM JT-Shop: and 48°F in here
08:35 AM bjorkintosh: Tom_L, you have a sherline?
08:35 AM JT-Shop: yup
08:35 AM Tom_L: had to go thaw a pipe out for the Niece yesterday
08:35 AM Tom_L: bjorkintosh, had
08:35 AM bjorkintosh: ah. what did you use it for?
08:35 AM Tom_L: parts of it to buid the new mill :)
08:35 AM bjorkintosh: hah.
08:35 AM Tom_L: nothing serious. it wouldn't handle it
08:35 AM JT-Shop: Tom_L, I have a few more pin names to verify with the 7i76 and 7i77
08:36 AM Tom_L: so wait or build?
08:36 AM Tom_L: building...
08:36 AM Tom_L: :)
08:41 AM Tom_L: bjorkintosh, drilling the plates for the new mill was it's last task: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Y_Axis_Plate2.jpg
08:41 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Z_Axis_Plate1.jpg
08:42 AM Tom_L: the first pic i had to do in 2 steps due to the work envelope
08:43 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, PR 68 up
08:44 AM bjorkintosh: Tom_L, you had a mill attachment for it?
08:44 AM Tom_L: it was a mill
08:44 AM bjorkintosh: oh!
08:44 AM bjorkintosh: I thought it was the lathe.
08:44 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/sherline_files/sherline1.jpg
08:45 AM bjorkintosh: how cute.
08:45 AM Tom_L: hehe
08:45 AM Tom_L: i had that for a good 20-30 yrs
08:46 AM Tom_L: always tried to have it do just a little more than it should
08:47 AM bjorkintosh: well. the correct thing was what you did.
08:47 AM bjorkintosh: build its replacement.
08:47 AM bjorkintosh: which then means it's birthed a better self!
08:47 AM Tom_L: i still use the spindle since i had so many holders already and it works _ok_
08:48 AM Tom_L: new spindle motor but kept the spindle itself
08:48 AM * JT-Shop shovels a path to the other shop
08:49 AM Tom_L: bjorkintosh, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Final/chip_guards/Chip_guard5.jpg
08:50 AM Tom_L: it does pretty well for a home built small mill
08:50 AM bjorkintosh: that's great.
08:51 AM Tom_L: doesn't quite compare to this: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cincinnati/Cincinnati_6.jpg
08:51 AM bjorkintosh: things a 3D printer can't do you know?
08:51 AM Tom_L: vise versa too
08:53 AM bjorkintosh: where was that mill? the cincinnati?
08:53 AM Tom_L: my kid runs those
08:53 AM bjorkintosh: damn.
08:54 AM bjorkintosh: what do they make with them?
08:54 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cincinnati/Cincinnati_5.jpg
08:54 AM Tom_L: BIG parts :)
08:54 AM Tom_L: aircraft related
08:54 AM bjorkintosh: oh of course.
08:54 AM bjorkintosh: but how would one even make such a mill in the first place?
08:54 AM bjorkintosh: I can see it being cast.
08:55 AM bjorkintosh: yes.
08:55 AM Tom_L: 180' bed with 2 gantries 3 heads each
08:55 AM bjorkintosh: but how would you machine that mill for starters after casting the components??
08:55 AM bjorkintosh: what a beast.
08:56 AM Tom_L: recently they were putting new tops on the rails on one
08:56 AM Tom_L: had the gantry off against the wall
09:30 AM Guts71: Could I install linuxcnc via virtualbox ?
09:31 AM JT-Cave: sim only
09:32 AM Guts71: sim ??
09:32 AM Tom_L: simulation
09:32 AM JT-Cave: yes, no hardware or real time kernel will work on a virtualbox
09:34 AM JT-Cave: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/getting-started/getting-linuxcnc.html#_installing_linuxcnc
09:34 AM JT-Cave: hmm wrong link
09:35 AM Unterhausen: there was a crash nearby where the cab came right off a pickup, almost undamaged
09:40 AM JT-Cave: I'm failing to find how to install the sim anymore
09:48 AM * JT-Cave heads back out in the snow to sweep the steps off
10:07 AM roycroft: it's day three of our disaster
10:08 AM roycroft: power is still out all over the place, including at the fiber hut in a city i manage
10:09 AM roycroft: i'm told that the water plant and wastewater plant are operating, but there is no live fiber connection to either
10:22 AM pcw-home: JT-Cave: Yes for ext 5V on 7I76, 5V to TB3 pin 21 or 22, 0V to TB3 pin 23 or 24 and W2 "Right"
10:24 AM JT-Shop: pcw-home, thanks
10:24 AM JT-Shop: it's the last card I need to check with mesact
10:32 AM Roguish: good morning. chilly and foggy here.
10:42 AM roycroft: it is cold and icy here
10:44 AM roycroft: we tied our record low yesterday, and are forecast to break the record low today
11:01 AM JT-Cave: somehow I don't think my package will get delivered today by usps
11:02 AM JT-Cave: we got 3" of powder snow yesterday and last night
11:03 AM Roguish: I haven't seen snow fall where I live since I moved to Cal in '67
11:04 AM Roguish: only on vacation up in the mountains.
11:04 AM JT-Cave: I should use the leaf blower to blow it off after my nap...
11:05 AM Roguish: get one of these https://www.cnet.com/home/yard-and-outdoors/everyone-hates-plowing-snow-the-updated-yarbo-robot-cleans-up-while-youre-inside/
11:05 AM JT-Cave: lol
11:06 AM Roguish: look at the price.... like 5k
11:06 AM Roguish: for the well off lazy asses
11:07 AM JT-Cave: expensive toy
11:10 AM roycroft: i have to give our letter carrier credit
11:10 AM roycroft: he drove by on saturday
11:10 AM roycroft: every mailbox is frozen shut, so he could deliver nothing
11:11 AM roycroft: but he did drive by and try
11:11 AM roycroft: the mailboxes are all still frozen shut, but today is a holiday
11:12 AM roycroft: tomorrow the temperature is supposed to reach freezing and the rain is supposed to start shortly after the mail normally arrives, so i anticipate we'll get no mail tomorrow
11:31 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, everything seems to be working with this last push a few moments ago
11:31 AM JT-Cave: so time for a nap
11:42 AM Unterhausen: I suppose I should get gas for the snowblower robot
12:03 PM slow-poke: I'm a total Linux newbie, so please bear with me....
12:03 PM slow-poke: I have installed LinuxCNC 2.91 under Debian12. Every time the machine starts I need to enter username and password. This PC will be dedicated to a milling machine and will only be used by me, and will probably not be connected to the internet so it would be more convenient if on power-up the login and password screen would simply be bypassed. I did
12:03 PM slow-poke: find one reference stating to modify
12:04 PM slow-poke: lightdm.conf
12:04 PM slow-poke: So I opened a command prompt and typed "sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf" and then removed (under the "[Seat:*]" section, the '#' for the following two lines (I assume the # means comment) and added my user name after =
12:04 PM slow-poke: Changed.....
12:04 PM slow-poke: #autologin-user=
12:04 PM slow-poke: #autologin-user-timeout=0
12:04 PM slow-poke: to
12:04 PM slow-poke: autologin-user=myusername
12:04 PM slow-poke: autologin-user-timeout=0
12:04 PM slow-poke: I then did ^O, and ^X the file appears to have been updated, because when I reopen the file I can see my changes.
12:04 PM slow-poke: This does NOT seem to work and does not address the password aspect.
12:04 PM slow-poke: myusername is my actual username
12:04 PM slow-poke: Suggestions welcome.
12:15 PM Unterhausen: the main thing people worry about is the screen saver logging them out
12:16 PM Unterhausen: fix that, and have a simple password so logging in after boot is easy
12:18 PM Unterhausen: NOPASSWD seems to be an option, but looks like an annoyance and I'm not a linux newbie
12:38 PM Tom_L: slow-poke, did you change that in the right place? they list the options as kindof a 'help' then the options are below that. at least i've seen that in the past
12:39 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i'll check and build again after lunch and before nap
12:43 PM Tom_L: slow-poke, what you did should work from the looks of it
12:43 PM Tom_L: spelled correct? case sensitive..
12:45 PM JT-Cave: slow-poke, make sure you put that in the actual user section not the desc
12:46 PM Tom_L: from what he mentioned i think he did
12:46 PM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/debian-11-fix.html
12:47 PM slow-poke: Sorry to waste your time, it works now, my username end in a ll and in the file I had an extra l
12:47 PM JT-Cave: hmm emc uses xfsomething?
12:47 PM JT-Cave: or maybe wayland so it might not work for that
12:48 PM slow-poke: Working!!!
12:48 PM JT-Cave: yea
12:48 PM slow-poke: Thanks to everyone
12:48 PM JT-Cave: I recon I should bundle up and try and blow the snow off the driveway
12:49 PM JT-Cave: Unterhausen, you can turn off the screen saver
12:49 PM JT-Cave: opps someone laid and egg... gotta fetch it before it freezes
12:50 PM Unterhausen: JT-Cave, I know you can turn off the screen saver, thus me telling him to fix that
12:51 PM JT-Cave: did you also know even if you turn off the screen saver the screen will go blank after a while?
12:53 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, PR 69 up
12:54 PM JT-Cave: thanks
12:55 PM Tom_L: what was that apt command to remove unused packages?
12:55 PM JT-Cave: you're getting fast at building them debs :)
12:55 PM JT-Cave: apt clean
12:56 PM JT-Cave: apt purge
12:56 PM JT-Cave: apt autoremove
12:56 PM Tom_L: not that i really need the space
12:59 PM Tom_L: if i had another rpi i could do them at the same time
01:04 PM Unterhaus_: tbh, I just follow RW's guide so I don't have to keep those things in my memory. Apparently his guide keeps the screen from blanking
01:08 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
01:10 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i wonder if i can cross build those on the amd4 pc
01:10 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:10 PM Tom_dev: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/172500/how-to-cross-build-a-debian-package
01:12 PM JT-Shop: looks easy enough
01:13 PM * JT-Shop has 1/4 of the driveway shoveled off
01:13 PM Tom_L: i might try one
01:13 PM Tom_L: what sort of batch file does linux use to automate that then?
01:13 PM Tom_L: some bash command file?
01:14 PM JT-Shop: a bash file
01:14 PM Tom_L: i don't know about batch files on linux
01:14 PM JT-Shop: yea
01:14 PM Tom_L: that would simplify it
01:14 PM JT-Shop: let me see if I can cobble one up, I speak a little bash from time to time
01:15 PM Tom_L: you'd need the 2 different arch
01:15 PM Tom_L: one for armhf and one for arm64
01:15 PM JT-Shop: yup
01:15 PM Tom_L: looks easy enough
01:15 PM Tom_L: lunch first. then maybe i'll mess with it
01:18 PM JT-Shop: actually there is only one line to run from the source directory to build
01:19 PM Tom_L: right
01:19 PM Tom_L: the dpkg-buildpackage just needs the arch added
01:28 PM JT-Shop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcH1Ioo2XqU
01:34 PM Tom_L: i wonder if that -b option is needed there
01:34 PM Tom_L: for dpkg-buildpackage
01:34 PM Tom_L: i just built both of them but haven't tested yet
01:54 PM JT-Shop: just got most of the driveway shoveled off... break time
01:55 PM Tom_L: how do you flush the bash_history to file?
01:59 PM Tom_L: haha that works good
02:00 PM JT-Shop: there's a bash_history file?
02:00 PM Tom_L: yes
02:00 PM Tom_L: .
02:00 PM Tom_L: hidden
02:01 PM Tom_L: also ctrl R then start typing the command you want
02:01 PM JT-Shop: wow a lot of crap in that file
02:01 PM Tom_L: i clean mine out so i have the useful commands left
02:02 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:02 PM Tom_dev: http://paste.debian.net/1304212/
02:03 PM Tom_dev: woops i got that armhf in there 2x
02:04 PM JT-Shop: cool
02:05 PM Tom_L: cleaning the bash_history speeds up my rpi builds cause that's about all i do on those
02:05 PM Tom_L: i'll test the debs now
02:05 PM JT-Shop: ok
02:12 PM Tom_L: haha i just talked myself out of a job
02:12 PM Tom_L: works great
02:13 PM Tom_L: installed on arm64 and armhf
02:14 PM Tom_L: you could add some pauses or checks for build status i suppose
02:16 PM Tom_L: i would run it from the /home/usr directory though and cd to the mesact folder in case you overwrite it
02:17 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:18 PM Tom_dev: http://paste.debian.net/1304214/
02:18 PM Tom_dev: updated
02:21 PM Tom_L: gives some warnings about environment variables for cc but it seems to work
02:27 PM JT-Shop: when you run it on the pi?
02:27 PM Tom_L: no during the cross build
02:27 PM Tom_L: no warnings on the rpi, just works
02:27 PM JT-Shop: ok
02:27 PM Tom_L: i installed both of them
02:27 PM JT-Shop: cool
02:28 PM Tom_L: run it once and you'll see the warnings
02:28 PM Tom_L: maybe you know how to fix them
02:28 PM Tom_L: i know you can supress them
02:28 PM JT-Shop: time to go spoil the hens
02:28 PM Tom_L: nap time here
02:28 PM Tom_L: i'm gonna run a test push for these from the amd64 if you don't mind
02:30 PM Tom_L: i've had issues doing that from there in the past
02:32 PM Tom_L: yeah it keeps wanting to push to yours instead of mine
02:33 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure how to change that
02:38 PM JT-Shop: check your global and local git config file
02:39 PM Tom_L: where's that?
02:39 PM JT-Shop: all hidden files
02:40 PM JT-Shop: .git/config
02:40 PM JT-Shop: in mesact
02:40 PM Tom_L: i wonder if it's because of your config when i pull
02:40 PM Tom_L: i see it now
02:40 PM JT-Shop: or you may have a global one somewhere
02:40 PM JT-Shop: hmm it should be on the ignore list
02:41 PM JT-Shop: automagicly
02:41 PM Tom_L: what do you mean?
02:42 PM JT-Shop: .git should not be part of the repo
02:42 PM Tom_L: it doesn't do that on the rpis
02:42 PM Tom_L: so edit the .git/config to point at mine?
02:43 PM Tom_L: i'll try that
02:44 PM JT-Shop: I'm not really sure... you cloned mine and do pr's from that clone?
02:44 PM Tom_L: yes
02:44 PM Tom_L: well i forked? it
02:44 PM JT-Shop: ah
02:45 PM Tom_L: anyway i keep a copy on my git repo and work from that
02:45 PM Tom_L: then push to you from that
02:45 PM JT-Shop: hmm forked should be your own repo I "think"
02:45 PM Tom_L: i'm not entirely sure
02:46 PM Tom_L: yeah it says it's forked from yours
02:47 PM * JT-Shop goes to take the trash out and see if the driveway is even slicker now lol
02:47 PM Tom_L: anyway, you may get a couple unwanted debs :)
02:47 PM JT-Shop: if I'm not back in 10 minutes call 911 lol
02:47 PM Tom_L: they work though
02:47 PM JT-Shop: no problem we can work around that
02:49 PM Tom_L: changing the config worked
02:49 PM Tom_L: thanks
02:49 PM Tom_L: i'll just discard the debs here
02:51 PM Tom_L: ok i think that'll work better
02:54 PM JT-Shop: ok
02:54 PM Tom_L: unless you wanna build them yourself
02:54 PM JT-Shop: driveway is not bad a few slick spots but I'm not done shoveling
02:54 PM JT-Shop: you're doing good!
02:54 PM Tom_L: haha
02:54 PM Tom_L: i'll test them on hardware every once in a while
02:55 PM JT-Shop: cool
02:55 PM JT-Shop: I'm going to release 2.1.1 in the morning now that I "think" I have all the bugs fixed from all the changes
02:55 PM Tom_L: i noticed when you run a bash cd command from the script it doesn't exit in that directory
02:56 PM Tom_L: it exits in the one you ran the script from
02:56 PM JT-Shop: that makes sense
02:56 PM Tom_L: yeah
02:56 PM Tom_L: not like old DOS
02:57 PM Tom_L: i'll post those warnings to a paste and maybe you can take a look
02:57 PM JT-Shop: ok
02:58 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:58 PM Tom_dev: http://paste.debian.net/1304221/
02:59 PM Tom_L: i wonder if i need the -Pcross option?
03:01 PM JT-Shop: looks like you need something set but not sure
03:01 PM Tom_L: well it works
03:01 PM Tom_L: maybe could get rid of some warnings but..
03:01 PM JT-Shop: no errors or warnings?
03:01 PM Tom_L: just those
03:01 PM Tom_L: none on the rpi
03:02 PM Tom_L: after moving them from amd64 and installing
03:03 PM * JT-Shop goes for one last attempt at finishing shoveling the driveway off
03:20 PM JT-Shop: driveway is finally clean
03:24 PM Tom_L: i didn't bother with mine the last time, it was mostly ice
03:25 PM roycroft: my street is covered with ice still
03:25 PM XXCoder: just make jet deicer
03:25 PM Tom_L: when it started to thaw i scraped it off
03:25 PM Tom_L: jack hammer
03:25 PM roycroft: there would be no point in shoveling the driveway
03:25 PM roycroft: i'll do what everyone else around here does - wait until the rain comes to melt it all away
03:25 PM JT-Shop: wife has a dr appt tomorrow or I would not have shoveled it
03:26 PM XXCoder: yeah snow rarely lasts around here also
03:26 PM roycroft: pretty much everything around here is closed except for grocery stores
03:26 PM roycroft: including medical clinics
03:26 PM XXCoder: toasty 35f here. no snow
03:27 PM JT-Shop: it never made it to the forecast high of -12°C
03:27 PM Tom_L: is the dead end dirt road down the dirt road clear?
03:27 PM JT-Shop: no, but it's been driven on by a few vehicles
03:28 PM JT-Shop: the county almost never grades the dirt roads for snow
03:29 PM Tom_L: 5°F / -15°C here
03:29 PM Tom_L: they gravel some of the rural bus routes here and maintain them a little better than the rest
03:29 PM JT-Shop: the only C that makes any sense to me is 0C and 100C
03:30 PM Tom_L: i was about to check the mail but realized just in time there wasn't any
03:31 PM JT-Shop: I bet the garage door won't be open tonight when I shut down lol
03:31 PM JT-Shop: nope no mail today
03:31 PM Tom_L: mine froze shut few days ago
03:31 PM JT-Shop: even though amazon says my package is out for delivery today lol
03:31 PM JT-Shop: this is a man door
03:31 PM Tom_L: oh
03:31 PM JT-Shop: that I left open last night
03:32 PM JT-Shop: sometimes when you close that door it doesn't latch
03:32 PM Tom_L: i bet not :)
03:33 PM JT-Shop: garage was 34°F this morning and the door was just open a couple of inches
03:33 PM Tom_L: i keep a pilot running in the 'shop' side and that keeps it above freezing but not comfortable to work in
03:34 PM Tom_L: doesn't take too long to warm up
03:58 PM XXCoder: lol https://youtu.be/pKrQ-7XNngc
03:58 PM XXCoder: lathe made from pvc
04:00 PM Tom_L: wonder how many times he glued his fingers together
04:01 PM XXCoder: dnno
04:02 PM XXCoder: I wonder why though. maybe guy cant afford much of anything but have access to junk pipes or something
04:03 PM roycroft: i have the heat cranked in my garage shop, just to take a bit of the chill off
04:03 PM roycroft: i have some work to do there, but it can be done in a few short spurts
04:05 PM Tom_L: hopefully nothing temp critical
04:07 PM XXCoder: well that lathe looks very clean considering its pvc
04:11 PM XXCoder: can cut alum, lightly. not bad lol
04:30 PM Unterhausen: I have some map cases I'm determined to get rid of. Emptying them is going slowly
04:43 PM roycroft: power was just restored to the fiber hut
04:43 PM roycroft: city hall, the water plants, and the police have internet service again
04:43 PM roycroft: this is the longest outage in the history of that fiber network
04:43 PM roycroft: or was, rather, assuming it doesn't go down again
04:45 PM roycroft: i still have half a dozen circuits downin that town, and dozens more in other towns, but this was the most important one
04:46 PM roycroft: and today the white house was swatted
04:47 PM XXCoder: swatting is horrible thing to do
04:48 PM XXCoder: no matter who target is
04:58 PM Tom_L: light snow
05:01 PM JT-Cave: https://radar.weather.gov/station/kpah/standard
05:01 PM JT-Cave: we didn't get any today
05:03 PM Tom_L: doesn't look like we'll get much
05:04 PM JT-Cave: I stuffed the two stoves and the heater full of wood and called it a day
05:04 PM XXCoder: Unterhausen: map cases?
05:09 PM Unterhausen: xx: look up drawing flat file cabinet
05:09 PM XXCoder: ok
05:09 PM Unterhausen: they take up a lot of space
05:13 PM XXCoder: just looked em up. yeah pretty large allright
05:15 PM XXCoder: hows snow in shop so far roy
05:17 PM Unterhausen: I went on amazon looking at the diamond stone that Rob Cosman uses, and it was $20 off, $60. Didn't order it right away and when I went back, it was $120
05:18 PM Unterhausen: I feel like it got noticed
05:18 PM roycroft: what stones does he use?
05:19 PM * roycroft thinks he'll head out to the mailboxes with a propane torch and melt the ice off of them so they will open
05:19 PM roycroft: i'll do mine and my two neighbors' who share a pedistal with me
05:20 PM XXCoder: wonder if could wire a PID heater to it
05:20 PM XXCoder: set it to say 40f or so. it'll ensure ice never forms on it
05:20 PM roycroft: it's never frozen shut before
05:21 PM roycroft: it might be better to wait until tomorrow to do that though, since today is a federal holiday and there will be no mail delivery anyway
05:21 PM Unterhausen: trend 300/1000 combo diamond stone
05:22 PM roycroft: i have no experience with trend stones
05:22 PM roycroft: i hav diasharp
05:23 PM Unterhausen: I suspect any of the good ones are about the same
05:23 PM roycroft: the dia-sharp coarse is 325 mesh
05:23 PM roycroft: i rarely use mine
05:23 PM Unterhausen: I have some inexpensive ones from ebay I really like, but I'm sure they won't last long
05:24 PM roycroft: if your blade is already fairly sharp, then i would start with exra fine, which is 1200 mesh
05:25 PM roycroft: and then move up to a 6000 mesh stone like the shapton glass and ceramic stone, which is what i use
05:25 PM Unterhausen: going to see if I can use my waterstones for now
05:25 PM roycroft: then a final lapping on a leather strop
05:25 PM roycroft: waterstones work fine - i still have some - but they need to be dressed pretty much after every use
05:25 PM Unterhausen: yeah, I have that covered
05:26 PM roycroft: what i really like about the diamond stones is that they're essentially zero maintenance
05:26 PM Unterhausen: I'm convinced being obsessive about sharpening keeps me from doing it often enough
05:26 PM roycroft: but one pays the price for that
05:27 PM Unterhausen: got to find a ruler to dedicate to the ruler trick
05:28 PM roycroft: i have dia-sharp stones from extra coarse to extra fine
05:28 PM roycroft: i use the fine and extra-fine 95+% of the time
05:28 PM roycroft: the others are there just for initial grinding
05:29 PM roycroft: i usually go up in sequence to the dia-sharp extra-fine, then over to the shapton 6000 mesh ceramic/glass for polishing, then lapping
05:29 PM roycroft: i lap constantly while working
05:29 PM roycroft: and when the end starts getting rounded over a bit, i go back to the fine, then extra-fine diamond stones, then the shapton, then lapping
05:30 PM roycroft: only if it gets chipped or i want to change the angle do i go to the coarser stones
05:32 PM roycroft: my next door neighbor is getting angry
05:32 PM roycroft: he came out with a bag of trash to put in the trash can, only to find the trach can encased in ice
05:32 PM roycroft: he's not going to get it open until at least wednesday, when things thaw out
05:33 PM roycroft: there will likely be no trash collection this week anyway
06:23 PM roycroft: we're definitely not going anywhere today - i just went outside to scope out the situation and i fell three times before i got to my car, which is <10m from my front door
06:23 PM roycroft: there's a good 3cm of solid ice on the ground, street, sidewalks
06:23 PM XXCoder: ouch lol
06:24 PM roycroft: it was a sunny day today
06:25 PM roycroft: it's still -3, but the sun heated the surface of the ice just enough to melt it and turn it from crunchy ice to solid ice
09:23 PM roycroft: pretty much everything is shut down again tomorrow
09:50 PM justache- is now known as justache
11:36 PM solarwind: https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/197et13/jeff_bezos_and_his_current_wife_in_italy_today/ got a good pic for my next set of target practice papers
11:41 PM CaptHindsight: haha
11:41 PM CaptHindsight: "Bezos looks like Charlie Runkle from Californication"
11:50 PM miss0r: I can't help but think, looking at his current wife; What, if anything, is going on in her head
11:53 PM miss0r: I know she probably looks like the current trend. But honnestly, I find her directly repulsive. ffs, what is going on in the world :]
