04:25 AM Tom_L: morning
04:25 AM Tom_L: 2°F High 8°F
05:11 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:12 AM JT-Cave: 23°F Sunny High: 36°F
07:10 AM CaptHindsight: "solarwind> CaptHindsight how long before I get cancelled?" it's mostly grown ups in here, not to worry
09:08 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
09:19 AM jfsimon1981_c is now known as jfsimon
09:57 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, I'm in the middle of fixing the i/o...
09:59 AM Tom_L: what's wrong with the IO?
10:00 AM Tom_L: blistering 6°F out now
10:01 AM JT-Cave: I'm fixing the port numbers so any daughter card is correct
10:01 AM Tom_L: i think the spindle encoder may be a challenge too
10:01 AM JT-Cave: clock says 33°F weather.gov says 24°F
10:01 AM JT-Cave: spindle is a challenge for sure
10:04 AM Tom_L: mine is thru the mesa pins
10:10 AM JT-Cave: P1
10:10 AM JT-Cave: hm2_7i92.0.7i77.0.3.input-00
10:10 AM JT-Cave: hm2_7i92.0.7i77.0.3.input-00-not
10:10 AM JT-Cave: P2
10:10 AM JT-Cave: hm2_7i92.0.7i77.0.0.input-00
10:10 AM JT-Cave: hm2_7i92.0.7i77.0.0.input-00-not
10:11 AM JT-Cave: for example you see if the 7i77 is on P1 then the port is 3
10:12 AM Tom_L: to all the cards hold to that pattern?
10:12 AM JT-Cave: P1
10:12 AM JT-Cave: hm2_7i92.0.7i76.0.2.input-00
10:12 AM JT-Cave: hm2_7i92.0.7i76.0.2.input-00-not
10:12 AM JT-Cave: P2
10:12 AM JT-Cave: hm2_7i92.0.7i76.0.0.input-00
10:12 AM JT-Cave: hm2_7i92.0.7i76.0.0.input-00-not
10:13 AM JT-Cave: no
10:13 AM JT-Cave: it doesn't matter if the main board is a 5/6i25 or 7i92(t) the pattern is the same
10:13 AM JT-Cave: 7i77 3 7i76 2
10:14 AM Tom_L: are those 50pin or 25 pin plugs?
10:14 AM JT-Cave: db25
10:14 AM Tom_L: i don't think he still makes many 50pin does he?
10:14 AM JT-Cave: I don't even have 50 pin cards in mesact anymore
10:14 AM Tom_L: mine is
10:14 AM Tom_L: 7i90
10:14 AM JT-Cave: I have a few in stock
10:14 AM Tom_L: but it's old
10:15 AM Tom_L: i should get a spare 7i47s
10:15 AM JT-Cave: when they're gone they are gone for me
10:15 AM Tom_L: you don't have any of those with the spindle do you?
10:15 AM Tom_L: i have a spare but it's not the 's'
10:15 AM JT-Cave: yup
10:16 AM JT-Cave: https://mesaus.com/product/7i47s/
10:16 AM JT-Cave: got 4
10:16 AM JT-Cave: fingers are thawed out so back to being a chicken tender
10:16 AM Tom_L: doesn't take long in this weather
10:23 AM JT-Cave: did you notice what I pushed this morning?
10:23 AM Tom_L: i haven't gotten that far yet
10:23 AM Tom_L: want me to build?
10:27 AM Tom_L: i don't see anything there
10:27 AM Tom_L: just my debs waiting
10:27 AM Tom_L: allow users to edit...
10:27 AM JT-Cave: wait on building
10:28 AM JT-Cave: until I finish the i/o
10:30 AM JT-Cave: I don't want to push that until I'm done
10:31 AM Tom_L: allow users to edit tool table :) in options
10:31 AM Tom_L: or 'Tools'
10:32 AM Tom_L: that would be a simple system call to tooledit
10:35 AM Tom_L: with 'file' as a parameter and maybe 'columns'
10:40 AM JT-Cave: users can do that in every gui I think
10:40 AM JT-Cave: besides I hate the tool editor lol
10:40 AM Roguish: wet and chilly here. Poplar Bluff is cold and dry.
10:42 AM roycroft: we're having our ice storm
10:43 AM roycroft: so far it's not as bad as forecast, but it's still well below freezing and the ice is still coming down
10:43 AM * roycroft is planning on staying home today at this point
10:44 AM * JT-Cave is going to the grocery store today because the next two days suck
10:49 AM Tom_L: make friends, i'm sure it'll be crouded
10:49 AM Tom_L: well maybe not in PB but they are here
10:49 AM JT-Cave: we'll see
10:50 AM JT-Cave: damn near nap time here
11:42 AM roycroft: half the radios stations around here are off the air
11:44 AM roycroft: and the ice is still coming down
11:44 AM roycroft: and some old guy just called me and wants to check out my tig welder
11:44 AM roycroft: he wanted to come over today, but i told him not to drive on the ice
11:45 AM roycroft: he wants me to "demonstrate" it for him anyway
11:46 AM roycroft: i told him i'm happy to set it up with power and let him have at it but he wants a "demo", so i'm sure he's just a lookey-loo who is not going to buy it
12:01 PM bjorkintosh: weld tourists.
12:01 PM bjorkintosh: tsk tsk.
12:02 PM Unterhausen: roycroft, do you have a skew block plane?
12:03 PM Unterhausen: I want to know if the blade is bedded flat to the sole
12:15 PM roycroft: no, i do not
12:15 PM roycroft: it's on my list - one of the few planes i don't have that i want
12:17 PM roycroft: but at $400 each, and a pair being needed, it just kind of hangs out on the list
12:20 PM Unterhausen: I think I could get by with a RH version
12:21 PM Unterhausen: I'm going to make an infill version. No idea why they are so expensive. Because they can being my operating theory
12:22 PM roycroft: they do seem overpriced
12:22 PM roycroft: the veritas ones are actually a pretty good value - $400 for the pair
12:22 PM Unterhausen: I'm sure the stanley 140 originally cost and extra 10% over the normal
12:22 PM roycroft: even beat up stanley 140s are $200 or so
12:22 PM Unterhausen: thought about buying a body for $50
12:23 PM roycroft: still no footprints or tire tracks in the street
12:23 PM Unterhausen: plane prices are a bit ridiculous nowadays, should have bought more bitd
12:24 PM roycroft: i don't remember ever having no traffic at all on a saturday, and we've had snowstorms on saturdays before
12:24 PM Unterhausen: they probably tried to get there and ended up in a ditch
12:24 PM roycroft: i do live on a dead end street, so by definition there is no through traffic
12:25 PM Unterhausen: my neighbors would leave anyway
12:25 PM roycroft: the maga crowd down at the end of the street would normally be doing doughnuts in the street by now
12:25 PM Unterhausen: I have recently developed paranoia about them sliding into our house, we live at just the right part of a curve for that
12:26 PM roycroft: and speaking of which, a big pickukp from that part of the street just drove by
12:26 PM roycroft: so no more virgin ice on the road
12:27 PM Unterhausen: I have never seen a crash on our street though, as long as you don't count the one at the end of the street from the crossing road
12:27 PM roycroft: i'm still thinking about finishing my round of checking out thrift store today, but i'm not sure they're open
12:27 PM roycroft: i suppose i should ring them up before deciding to go out
12:28 PM roycroft: i may not bother though - i have enough to do today to keep me busy
12:31 PM Unterhausen: I just ordered a veritas blade for my 5 1/2 Rob Cosman is a bad influence
12:32 PM Unterhausen: also, lee valley can't keep blades in stock
12:38 PM roycroft: i'm really sad that ron hock has retired, but happy for him
12:38 PM roycroft: i hope that lee valley manage hock blades well
12:39 PM roycroft: as in stocking them all, including the unusual ones, and being able to make custom blades
12:40 PM roycroft: i kind of doubt that though - i should imagine that over time they'll stop stocking the odd sizes and focus entirely on the popular ones
12:43 PM Unterhausen: heat treating O1 or A2 isn't exactly rocket surgery though
12:44 PM Unterhausen: maybe there will be a new Ron Hock.
12:44 PM Unterhausen: my claim to fame in blademaking is that Ron Hock answered my question about materials on rec.woodworking.neandrathals
12:45 PM * roycroft has had beers with ron
12:45 PM Unterhausen: that's probably better, he didn't tell me anything new
12:46 PM Unterhausen: Karl Hotley told me where to buy wood for my infill planes
12:46 PM Unterhausen: nice guy
12:46 PM roycroft: i was down in fort bragg one weekend and stopped by his shop and we went to north coast brewery, which is down the street from his shop
12:47 PM Unterhausen: was Krenov there too?
12:48 PM roycroft: i'm not sure if having beer with ron hock was the highlight or sitting in the brewerey sipping a glass of brother thelonious while sitting under the original artwork for the brother thelonius was the highlight
12:48 PM roycroft: for the brother thelonious label, rather
12:48 PM roycroft: and no, james krenov was not there
12:48 PM roycroft: it was right before he passeed, and he was probably not very mobile at the time
12:49 PM roycroft: i would love to have met him, but alas, that did not happen
12:49 PM Unterhausen: if Hock made chisels, Krenov would have hunted him down
12:50 PM roycroft: i'm still an o1 person, btw
12:50 PM Unterhausen: I had to buy A2, all they have in stock
12:50 PM Unterhausen: trying to decide if I should put it on the Record or the Millers Falls
12:51 PM roycroft: i've never tried pm-v11
12:52 PM roycroft: i probably should - it looks like a really good material
12:52 PM roycroft: and i think i spend too much time sharpening
12:52 PM Unterhausen: I want to someday, but when I order it's never in stock
12:52 PM Unterhausen: RC says 32 seconds to sharp. After giving him $500 for stones, of course
12:53 PM XXCoder: morning. its snowing in my room now
12:53 PM XXCoder: joking, man its cold
12:53 PM roycroft: allegedly pm-v11 would somewhat mitigate that problem, while still being able to take a good edge
12:53 PM roycroft: it's still below freezing here
12:54 PM Unterhausen: I ordered a skew block plane blade, see if it helps me figure out how to make the plane
12:54 PM XXCoder: same, but no ice
12:54 PM roycroft: it's supposed to get up to 1 degree by the end of the day, but it will hover just below freezing most of the day
12:54 PM roycroft: and the ice pellets are still coming down slowly, but steadily
12:54 PM roycroft: if i do go out today it will definitely be in the pickup
12:55 PM Unterhausen: warmest temperature on the 10 day forecast is freezing. And that's right now
12:56 PM roycroft: this storm will pass tomorrow, and by early next week we'll be back to normal temparatures and rainfall
12:58 PM XXCoder: its predicting snow tues. not snow/rain
01:04 PM roycroft: freezing rain in the forecast here for tuesday, but temps staying above freezing
01:05 PM XXCoder: lets see if it actually snows here tues lol
01:05 PM roycroft: as usual, we're at the very edge of the storm
01:05 PM roycroft: the forecast changes here constantly
01:05 PM XXCoder: yep same here. sucks
01:11 PM Unterhausen: I'm pretty sure I got a cold at the gym yesterday. Guy was obviously sick and hung around in the locker room
01:17 PM Unterhausen: now I put a propane forge in my amazon shopping cart
01:18 PM jdh: Is the hybrid iso the easiest thing for a new linuxcnc install?
01:19 PM solarwind: Unterhausen which one?
01:20 PM solarwind: I really want to buy up a bunch of oxygen concentrators to increase the combustion temperatures
01:20 PM Unterhausen: cheapest one on amazon
01:20 PM Unterhausen: I have been looking for a concentrator for a long time
01:21 PM Unterhausen: pandemic really screwed up the market for used ones, and they were never plentiful around here
01:21 PM solarwind: it's hard to heat up steel to high temperatures on propane alone unless you have a very well insulated forge
01:21 PM solarwind: induction heating is really effective though
01:21 PM Unterhausen: if I have problems, I also have oxy/acetylene
01:22 PM Unterhausen: I used to have an oven, but I gave it away
01:22 PM solarwind: yeah same, but that's a $300 cylinder of acetylene I want to use very sparingly
01:22 PM Unterhausen: are you in the U.S.?
01:22 PM solarwind: Toronto
01:23 PM solarwind: so about a stones throw away from Buffalo
01:23 PM solarwind: I smuggle things across the lake all the time
01:23 PM solarwind: coke, hookers, Buffalo chicken wings
01:23 PM Unterhausen: I was wondering because my acetylene tank costs about $60 usd to fill
01:24 PM solarwind: This is the largest tank
01:24 PM Unterhausen: I own mine, so size is not big
01:24 PM solarwind: "330 cubic feet" nominal
01:24 PM Unterhausen: 80 cu ft maybe?
01:25 PM solarwind: well there you go, that's about the same price per volume
01:25 PM Unterhausen: propane with a concentrator would be vastly cheaper though
01:26 PM Unterhausen: and I never weld, so it would work fine for me
01:26 PM solarwind: yeah I reserve the acetylene for welding or special needs
01:26 PM Unterhausen: I'll probably just make a "forge" out of a piece of pipe
01:26 PM solarwind: you need multiple concentrators though, unless you plan on accumulating the oxygen
01:27 PM Unterhausen: most people that build bike frames are happy with 5l/m
01:27 PM Unterhausen: so just one
01:27 PM solarwind: because a single concentrator can stream at best as much oxygen for a jeweller's torch
01:27 PM solarwind: maybe with acetylene, but propane binds more oxygen
01:27 PM solarwind: 3x more
01:28 PM Unterhausen: I'm just reporting what some very experienced framebuilders report with a similar torch
01:28 PM solarwind: yeah, with acetylene it's fine
01:28 PM Unterhausen: no, propane
01:28 PM solarwind: for aluminum frames?
01:28 PM Unterhausen: steel
01:28 PM solarwind: brazing steel?
01:29 PM Unterhausen: nobody welds aluminum frames with gas
01:29 PM solarwind: that's not true
01:29 PM Unterhausen: yes, brazing
01:29 PM solarwind: sometimes welding with gas and flux on dirty aluminum castings is easier than TIG
01:29 PM solarwind: but you can braze steel with propane alone
01:29 PM Unterhausen: it's not worth the hassle though, not quite enough heat
01:30 PM solarwind: it actually puts out a LOT of heat, it's just not enough intensity/temperature
01:30 PM solarwind: and the flame speed is pretty slow compared to acetylene
01:30 PM Unterhausen: I have never seen anyone weld an aluminum bicycle frame with gas, not saying nobody has ever done such an unwise thing given the existence of TIG
01:30 PM solarwind: which is why propane forges work well if built well
01:31 PM Unterhausen: the problem people run into brazing bike frames with just MAP is overheating.
01:31 PM solarwind: MAP isn't made anymore
01:31 PM Unterhausen: that's pretty pedantic
01:31 PM solarwind: how do you "overheat"?
01:31 PM roycroft: back when i was racing, chrome moly alloy frames were brazed together with gas
01:32 PM roycroft: that was in the '70s
01:32 PM Unterhausen: I'm not going to type MAP substitute every time
01:32 PM solarwind: propylene?
01:32 PM roycroft: i don't keep up with the bike building universe now
01:32 PM Unterhausen: yeah,not aluminum
01:32 PM roycroft: so i can't comment on current practice
01:32 PM Unterhausen: the cans say "MAP" on them
01:32 PM solarwind: "mapp/pro" is propylene + propane
01:32 PM Unterhausen: maybe not in Canada, where pedantry is rampant
01:33 PM solarwind: I have pure propylene too because it has a double bond
01:33 PM solarwind: it creates a reducing zone in the inner flame
01:33 PM solarwind: it's almost as cheap as propane and technically can weld steel
01:33 PM Unterhausen: Do Canadian bottles of MAP have a paragraph saying what they actually are?
01:33 PM solarwind: I've never seen a "MAP" bottle
01:34 PM solarwind: https://www.homedepot.ca/product/bernzomatic-14-1-oz-map-pro-cylinder/1000740051
01:34 PM solarwind: it's a trademark or something, it's just a mixture of propylene and propane
01:35 PM Unterhausen: yeah, I just saw that, the bottles don't say anything on them
01:36 PM Unterhausen: I just go grab a yellow bottle and don't read it in depth
01:36 PM solarwind: It's not much of an advantage
01:37 PM solarwind: pure propylene however is
01:37 PM Unterhausen: I'm not sure why people don't sell grandma's concentrator around here
01:37 PM roycroft: the ice storm has turned into rain
01:37 PM roycroft: so yay
01:37 PM XXCoder: some stuff is actually rented
01:37 PM roycroft: except it's still below freezing, so that may make things worse
01:38 PM XXCoder: so probably mot of em was returned
01:38 PM roycroft: instead of driving on crunchy ice pellets one would be driving on a sheet of smooth ice
01:38 PM XXCoder: I wonder if ice could be used as rock lol
01:38 PM XXCoder: probably not
01:38 PM Unterhausen: this one says it's propylene https://www.lowes.com/pd/BernzOmatic-Map-Pro-Hand-Torch-Cylinder/50126439
01:39 PM solarwind: Yeah that one might be pure propylene
01:39 PM solarwind: I have a "100 lb" cylinder of that
01:39 PM solarwind: those small bottles are 10x overpriced
01:40 PM solarwind: one of the welding gas suppliers here sells it to me for about $150 to refill my "100 lb" cylinder
01:41 PM solarwind: wait no, that's not pure propylene, it's mislabelled
01:41 PM solarwind: it's just their "map-pro"
01:43 PM solarwind: what also makes a huge difference is the efficient mixing and "swirling" of the flame for some reason
01:45 PM solarwind: https://www.bernzomatic.com/Products/Hand-Torches/Instant-On-Off/TS8000T this one lets me braze two pieces of steel about the size of your finger with brass rod easily
01:45 PM solarwind: I don't know why it makes such a huge difference, but it does.
01:55 PM roycroft: oh, the poetic justice
01:56 PM roycroft: two of bill o'reilly's books - killing jesus and killing rondald reagan - have been banned in florida for violating hb 1069
01:57 PM solarwind: lolololol
01:58 PM roycroft: i have not read those books, so i don't know what sexual content there allegely is
01:58 PM solarwind: can't be worse than what's in the bible
01:59 PM roycroft: but i do know that o'reilly was pushing hard for that legislation to be passed
02:02 PM roycroft: the rain has turned back into ice pellets, and it's still -3
02:02 PM * roycroft is pretty sure he's staying home today
02:03 PM _unreal_: just raining here right now
02:03 PM _unreal_: though on a sadder note. my father passed away last night
02:03 PM solarwind: Sorry for your loss.
02:03 PM _unreal_: after 5 years of stage 4..... hence I have not been around much
02:03 PM _unreal_: and still wont be
02:03 PM _unreal_: thanks
02:03 PM solarwind: But happy that his suffering has ended
02:04 PM _unreal_: for my siblings and I are's has just started. he willlfully didnt do a will or trust or anything.
02:04 PM _unreal_: :S
02:05 PM roycroft: my condolences, _unreal_
02:05 PM roycroft: i know it's been painful for a long time
02:05 PM _unreal_: thanks
02:05 PM roycroft: for both him and you
02:05 PM _unreal_: his bitter denial was just off the chart.
02:06 PM _unreal_: litterally right up to his last breath.
02:06 PM _unreal_: :/
02:06 PM _unreal_: but in any case
02:06 PM solarwind: denial of what?
02:06 PM _unreal_: my business partner and I
02:06 PM _unreal_: that he was dying
02:06 PM _unreal_: he was "GOING" to recover
02:06 PM solarwind: that's a strange thing to deny... we're ALL dying
02:07 PM roycroft: different folks cope with things in different ways
02:07 PM _unreal_: so my business parter and I are working on starting a machining and welding company
02:08 PM roycroft: and for some, denial is their only coping mechanism
02:08 PM _unreal_: angry denial
02:09 PM roycroft: well he's at peace now
02:14 PM Tom_L: _unreal_, sorry to hear that, it's never easy
02:14 PM pcw-home: Sorry _unreal_ sounds hard...
02:22 PM XXCoder: that sucks
02:42 PM Unterhausen: sorry unreal, hopefully the no-will part doesn't cause you too many problems
02:43 PM XXCoder: yeah
02:43 PM Unterhausen: I lost over 2 years of weekends because my mother didn't have a will
02:46 PM Unterhausen: she also talked to lawyers that suffered badly from Dunning Kruger
02:54 PM XXCoder: sucks :(
02:56 PM Unterhausen: I try to talk everyone into having a will now. The people that don't are immune, unfortunately
02:57 PM Unterhausen: someone on the lcnc mailing list, for example
02:57 PM JT-Shop: I thought I was ready for when my dad passed but I was not mentally ready
02:58 PM JT-Shop: I'm glad he put my name on everything
02:58 PM solarwind: Interesting
02:58 PM solarwind: I plan to die before my parents. I put their name on everything
02:59 PM solarwind: So the banks can't steal shit and what not since it was never mine in the first place
02:59 PM XXCoder: my dad had passed away over 20 years ago, and yeah he put my bro name for everything, and bro give stuff to me and sis, whatever we wanted and he kept stuff he wanted. at end we got very little stuff because honestly we didnt want much of those stuff
03:00 PM XXCoder: mom dont have a will but she has nothing we want basically
03:00 PM solarwind: And I mean not in a "will" sort of way, I mean all assets I buy, I legally put it as owned by them
03:00 PM Unterhausen: I often visualized my mom's reaction to what I did with her stuff. Our house is over-full anyway, don't need even nice things she had
03:01 PM Unterhausen: and my MiL moved into a nursing home about the same time, so we potentially had 3 houses worth of stuff
03:03 PM Unterhausen: She had 2 people that were like her kids, we tried to give as much to them
03:05 PM Unterhausen: roycroft, it turns out I do have a PM V11 plane blade. Maybe I'll put it on the 5 1/2
03:10 PM solarwind: of course the regular air ratchet slams my hand into the nearest metal object last night
03:11 PM solarwind: because why not give it 100Nm of torque just because we can?
03:11 PM solarwind: I need to sell that thing. All my ratchets are reactionless now
03:12 PM solarwind: would never go back to knuckle buster
03:27 PM roycroft: my understanding is that pm-v11 can take a keener edge than a2 but is more durable than o1
03:29 PM roycroft: i'd give it a go
03:29 PM roycroft: and a 5-1/2 is a great plane for testing it
03:59 PM roycroft: looks like i'm going out anyway today
03:59 PM roycroft: i have a mail server that's non-responsive and a remote power cycle did not help
04:01 PM roycroft: fortunately it's at our eugene data center, so it's not a very long truck roll
05:33 PM roycroft: i hate it when that happens
05:33 PM roycroft: turns out the data center had a power glitch
05:34 PM roycroft: how that happened i do not know - they have a and b power, batteries on both sides, and generators on both sides, but somehow both a and b went down for a split second at the same time
05:34 PM roycroft: the mail server's cmos reset because the cmos battery had died
05:34 PM roycroft: so drove all the way there, hooked up a display and keyboard, to be greeted by "press f1 to continue"
05:45 PM * roycroft notes that this machine has a serial console, but the serial console has to be enabled in the cmos and the default setting is "disabled"
05:56 PM roycroft: eek, and we just had a voltage drop here
06:12 PM Unterhausen: my initials are eek
06:12 PM Unterhausen: my mother hated me even before I was born
06:35 PM roycroft: things got better here, but my imac shut down for a bit because it has a tiny battery
06:37 PM roycroft: and i finally got the last glue-up done on my project, and some finish applied to part of it
06:38 PM roycroft: dave stanton is making a new project today, and he said it was going to be a "hand tools only" project
06:38 PM roycroft: he is using a hand saw and a brace and the like, so no power tools
06:38 PM roycroft: but he started with some s4s timbers, which i think is cheating for "hand tools only"
06:39 PM roycroft: i want to see logs and an adze and froe if he's going to claim "hand tools only"

07:07 PM Tom_L: 1°F out now
07:09 PM roycroft: it's -5c here
07:09 PM roycroft: and the ice is still falling from the sky
07:10 PM XXCoder: im picturing ice cubes just hitting stuff from sky lol
07:22 PM Tom_L: the wind is the killer here
07:23 PM Tom_L: been windy all day and it chills to the bone
07:24 PM XXCoder: same
07:24 PM XXCoder: very windy and very cold
07:44 PM roycroft: i have a whole city without power now
07:45 PM roycroft: but there's nothing i can do about it, and even when the power comes back i'm not doing a truck roll in the dark, so of any of the services don't come back they get to wait until tomorrow
07:45 PM roycroft: it's an hour's drive in good weather, so at least 2 hours today
07:50 PM * roycroft prepares for a long night of outages
07:55 PM Tom_L: -1°F
08:46 PM roycroft: i just got another outage report, from a city just south of the first one, which is south of here
08:46 PM roycroft: so the storm must be worse down there, which makes sense, because there's a mountain range there
08:48 PM * roycroft plans for a lot of complaining and very little doing anything, as nothing can be done until the power is restored
08:49 PM roycroft: and the water treatment plant in the first city just alarmed, so it's run out of power
08:49 PM roycroft: which is odd, because i thought it had generator power
08:49 PM roycroft: this is the first time it's ever alarmed
08:50 PM Tom_L: nobody poop
08:50 PM roycroft: wastewater is still online (for now)
08:50 PM Tom_L: phew
08:50 PM roycroft: so poop can be handled
08:50 PM roycroft: but it's going to be hard to get it there
08:52 PM Tom_L: will be a boil water warning issued i bet
08:54 PM roycroft: probably
08:54 PM roycroft: that's outside my pay grade, though
08:55 PM roycroft: and water may still be working
08:55 PM Tom_L: or they could just lie and say it's fine
08:55 PM Tom_L: they only do that here when a major pipe breaks
08:55 PM roycroft: i remember when we set things up the entire plant was on some giant generators, including the network gear
08:55 PM Tom_L: which has happened a few times
08:55 PM roycroft: they could have rerouted things since then
08:56 PM Tom_L: they just built a brand new treatment plant here and may not even be online yet
08:56 PM roycroft: but that city has frequent power outages, and this is the first time the water treatment plant ever alarmed
08:56 PM roycroft: it's been there about 10 years
08:56 PM roycroft: the network gear, that is
09:28 PM roycroft: the storm warning has not been extended, and the radar shows the worst of the storm is now to the east and to the south of us
09:43 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:50 PM roycroft: it's -7 now
09:50 PM roycroft: the record low for the day is -8, so we're close
10:35 PM Tom_L: -2°F
10:49 PM roycroft: wastewater just went offline
10:49 PM roycroft: the wastewater plant is in town
10:49 PM roycroft: water is about 5 miles out of town upriver, to the east
10:50 PM XXCoder: remember not to drink brown water
10:51 PM roycroft: watch out where the huskies go
10:51 PM roycroft: and don't you eat that yellow snow
10:58 PM Tom_L: it might turn to icicles before it his the snow
11:14 PM XXCoder: unlikely
