05:02 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:16 AM NoSpark: morning
05:17 AM NoSpark: how can you disable the base tread? does it even have to be loaded at all?
05:18 AM NoSpark: (btw, its 104 degrees F in my wqorkshop atm, and its 7pm )
05:42 AM travis_farmer: Morning
05:55 AM JT-Cave: just don't start the base thread
06:00 AM JT-Cave: https://radar.weather.gov/station/kpah/standard
06:08 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> IRC won't let me back in...
06:23 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, that's colorful :)
07:01 AM CaptHindsight: 2-3 inches of snow here already today
07:01 AM CaptHindsight: (50-75mm)
07:02 AM CaptHindsight: 8 to 12 inches of snow expected
07:03 AM CaptHindsight: it's a winter wonderland
07:04 AM JT-Cave: and I had to go out in that crap to reset the modem this morning
07:04 AM JT-Cave: and now I have to go out again and open the chicken doors
07:05 AM CaptHindsight: it's big wet heavy flakes
07:05 AM CaptHindsight: by the time I brushed the car off it was time to do it again
07:08 AM CaptHindsight: JT-Cave: is there anyway to run a reset switch to inside the house?
07:08 AM CaptHindsight: I did that when we had a WiMax modem on a pole on the roof
07:09 AM CaptHindsight: they didn't offer an outdoor weatherproof modem so I made one
07:09 AM JT-Cave: I have to unplug it then plug it back in again
07:10 AM JT-Cave: crap gotta go open the chicken doors
07:10 AM CaptHindsight: maybe have it in on a switched outdoor outlet?
07:13 AM JT-Cave: the modem is in my garage which is 30' from the house
07:14 AM JT-Cave: I do have a data conduit between the house and the garage and machine shop
07:15 AM JT-Cave: ATM I'm using all the comm cables I think
07:16 AM CaptHindsight: days like today is why I always have a remote reset or power switch for outdoor electronics
07:17 AM CaptHindsight: and a way to remove snow and ice from antennas
07:17 AM CaptHindsight: easily
07:32 AM JT-Cave: one good thing about starlink is it has a built in heater to melt snow and ice
07:33 AM JT-Cave: one bad thing about starlink is it only goes offline early in the morning
07:36 AM Tom_L: except for that once you've had fewer problems with it
07:52 AM JT-Cave: I made lobster bisque last night from 4 different recipes and one had old bay on it so I put a tbl of old bay in... it was way too salty
07:53 AM JT-Cave: read the old bay label this morning and the first two ingredients are celery salt and salt
09:49 AM NoSpark: Don't have enough information to file a bug report yet, but linuxcnc master is (still?) using a depreciated call iopl() that hasslloks like it has been depreciated in linux >6.7. It seems the kernel option CONFIG_X86_IOPL_IOPERM has been removed. also, iopl()'s replacement, ioperm, is depreciated as well... I'm not sure what the replacement of ioperm is.
09:49 AM Roguish: cold, but clear..... mid 30s now
09:50 AM NoSpark: Roguish: It's mid 30's here tooo, mid 30C and nearly midnight
09:51 AM Roguish: NoSpark, bug report is the right thing to do. you can also open a topic on the forum, and/or post something over on the linuxcnc-devel channel.
09:52 AM NoSpark: ik, and I'I'll add it to my todo,
09:52 AM Roguish: cool
09:52 AM NoSpark: sorry for the atrocious type, wrestling with my cat
09:53 AM Roguish: playin' with your pussy....
09:53 AM NoSpark: and typing one handed!
10:16 AM roycroft: it's calm before the storm time here - a brief respite from the rain before the deluge ensues
10:33 AM Roguish: we have cold rain coming in tonight.
10:58 AM Unterhausen: we're supposed to get rain at 5pm. Everything is being canceled
11:02 AM roycroft: it's due to commence here between 10am and 5pm
11:03 AM roycroft: oops
11:03 AM * roycroft refreshes
11:03 AM roycroft: change that to it's due to commence here any minute
11:08 AM solarwind: Guys, sometimes I like to hold my hand drills and pretend I'm shooting people
11:08 AM solarwind: with HSS drill bits
11:09 AM solarwind: CaptHindsight let's see what your shrink makes of THAT
11:11 AM * roycroft thinks solarwind has reverted to his veegee meds
11:12 AM roycroft: the new meds were working much better
11:12 AM solarwind: lol!
11:12 AM solarwind: if they didn't want people pretending they're guns, why are they shaped like pistols then?
11:12 AM solarwind: Bill O'Reilly: You can't explain that!
11:20 AM roycroft: just like the tides cannot be explained
11:35 AM JT-Cave: buddy of mine found a 400 day clock at his local goodwill for cheap
11:36 AM solarwind: https://www.amazon.ca/49-16-2567-Ratchets-Protective-Milwaukee-2566-20/dp/B0CJXGG32W
11:36 AM solarwind: brand: "TITISKIN" really?
11:39 AM roycroft: nice
11:39 AM roycroft: is it in good shape?
11:40 AM bjorkintosh: they're autogenerated names.
11:41 AM JT-Cave: yes, he said that he has to fix a couple of things and it will run again
11:42 AM solarwind: bjorkintosh autogenerated by _what_? `pwgen`?
11:43 AM bjorkintosh: solarwind, essentially.
11:44 AM bjorkintosh: it's pretty much the same factory with different store fronts.
11:44 AM bjorkintosh: you can tell by looking at their other products.
11:51 AM solarwind: I wish there were a way to braze HSS onto a holder for general tool making purpose
11:51 AM solarwind: Once you braze it, you lose the hardness. And then you can't even reharden it
11:53 AM solarwind: I guess you can weld it, but I don't know if that makes it susceptible to cracking or embrittlement
11:54 AM solarwind: I think mechanical capture is the only way, or a shrink/interference fit which you can then quench and temper if needed
12:02 PM roycroft: hss tooling is generally solid hss, and i had always thought the main reason is that hss is not that expensive, and it would cost more to braze/weld/fit hss cutting edges on a mild steel core than to just make the tool out of solid hss
12:02 PM roycroft: carbide is a different story, of course
12:03 PM roycroft: i wasn't aware that hss would lose its hardness when brazed - that is actualy counterintuitive (which is not to say it's not true), as one of the beneficial qualities of hss is its ability to tolerate heat and not lose its hardness
12:03 PM roycroft: i guess that holds true only to a point
12:04 PM solarwind: Brazing at 700+°C will _definitely_ ruin the temper
12:16 PM Sync: roycroft: there used to be brazed HSS tooling
12:21 PM Sync: solarwind: look into the CCT curve to decide if you can be quick while brazing and still keep reasonable hardness
12:22 PM solarwind: This isn't even for cutting tools actually, it's for things like wrenches, circlip pliers, other custom tools
12:22 PM bjorkintosh: can't it be bolted on, solarwind?
12:22 PM bjorkintosh: the way inserts are?
12:22 PM bjorkintosh: oh.
12:23 PM solarwind: so yeah, heat shrink/interference fit would work
12:23 PM bjorkintosh: i'm talking about food and you're talking about eye glasses. totally different contexts :-D
12:23 PM solarwind: Since high quality steel is expensive, it's easier just to attach smaller pieces of HSS to the wearing areas of the tool
12:24 PM solarwind: Can also hard face using S7 TIG rods
12:24 PM roycroft: maybe it can be brazed with a laser - that's a method used to localize heat
12:25 PM bjorkintosh: sintering
12:27 PM solarwind: I have an unhealthy obsession with collecting tools :P
12:28 PM solarwind: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DL7QDS2 I love this thing so much
12:29 PM bjorkintosh: what's the advantage of the gyro?
12:29 PM solarwind: it's just "different"
12:29 PM solarwind: variable speed that is very sensitive
12:29 PM bjorkintosh: Thank you.
12:34 PM Tom_L: blistering 17°F out but with the wind it makes ya not wanna go outside
12:36 PM solarwind: aaahhhhhh heated clothing
12:36 PM solarwind: you don't know what you're missing
12:37 PM bjorkintosh: I don't.
12:37 PM bjorkintosh: but you have an amazon link, yes? do you plug it in or does it have a battery?
12:37 PM Tom_L: hampster powered
12:37 PM solarwind: there are lots of brands that make it
12:37 PM solarwind: but I made my own
12:38 PM Tom_L: he hides in your hat
12:38 PM bjorkintosh: naturally.
12:38 PM solarwind: I bought carbon fibre "cloth" from some guy in Russia
12:38 PM Tom_L: there was a shortage of that for a while
12:38 PM solarwind: initially it was just for riding my motorcycle in colder weather, but I loved it so much, I added it to my regular jacket
12:39 PM solarwind: I can plug it into the 12V power on the motorcycle, or power with a battery pack
12:39 PM bjorkintosh: but how do you heat it up?
12:39 PM solarwind: it's resistive heating
12:39 PM bjorkintosh: and it has wires like an electric blanket?
12:39 PM solarwind: no, it's carbon fibre cloth
12:39 PM solarwind: it's even better
12:39 PM bjorkintosh: I didn't know it was conductive.
12:40 PM solarwind: unlike NiCr wire which heats up in patches, this heats up perfectly evenly
12:40 PM solarwind: https://www.instructables.com/DIY-carbon-tape-heated-vest/
12:40 PM solarwind: His tape is quite narrow. The one I have is 2-3x wider
12:41 PM bjorkintosh: interesante. :-?
12:41 PM solarwind: just crimp the end with a strip of copper and apply a voltage. Make sure to properly calculate the power requirements
12:41 PM solarwind: Battery lasts way longer than I need since clothing is naturally designed to be as insulating as possible
12:41 PM bjorkintosh: is there a formula?
12:41 PM Tom_L: e=ir
12:42 PM solarwind: there are lots of guides. I made mine several years ago so I can't remember off the top of my head
12:57 PM solarwind: Now onto solving the next annoying problem: modify my glue gun for instant heatup (< 1s) and eliminate heat creep
12:57 PM solarwind: Because when you ned hot glue, you need it _now_, not 20 minutes later
01:09 PM bjorkintosh: https://futurism.com/amazon-products-ai-generated
01:09 PM solarwind: for the average retarded consumer
01:23 PM * roycroft generally has the wherewithall to turn on the hot glue gun before commencing to work on the project that may require it
01:23 PM roycroft: that said, i do wish my hot glue gun would heat up a bit more quickly - it takes about 2 minutes - but i've learned to work with what i have
01:24 PM roycroft: the new gun that has no tether is really really nice
02:18 PM JT-Shop: temp is falling now
02:21 PM Tom_L: up to 20 here but windy as heck
02:25 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, build time again?
02:25 PM JT-Shop: yup
02:25 PM Tom_L: ok, bank run then i'll build
02:28 PM roycroft: the rain is just starting here
02:28 PM roycroft: and our winter storm watch, with a forecast for snow, has turned into an ice storm warning, which to me is a lot more ominous
02:29 PM roycroft: it's from 10pm this evening until 10pm saturday, so perhaps i should do any errands i might need to do until sunday right after work today, and plan on staying home tomorrow
02:29 PM roycroft: i should probably get my pickup of the street today as well - if it's icy then that vehicle is just a big, fat target
03:25 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, did you fix loading the feedback & encoder scale?
03:26 PM Unterhausen: the way our storm is rotating, it looks like we might have thunderstorms
03:26 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, PR #66 up
03:28 PM Tom_L: still doesn't load the Feedback & encoder scale from file
03:32 PM roycroft: a centimeter of ice is coming here to protect our roadways
03:32 PM Tom_L: i'm sure the vehicles will keep it polished too
03:32 PM roycroft: so eugene will be a huge bumper car rink tomorrow
03:34 PM Rab: https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/tx/austin
03:35 PM Rab: Anything below freezing is a crisis in Austin, particularly for multiple days, particularly with precipitation.
03:36 PM Rab: No doubt the supermarkets are stripped bare of bread, bottled water, and toilet paper.
03:36 PM Tom_L: do they have snow removal equipment down there?
03:38 PM Rab: Haha, no!
03:38 PM Tom_L: i know Georgia freaks out when they see the first snowflake
03:39 PM Tom_L: they even gave names to the plows here and you can track their progress
03:42 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, hmm I don't know if I fixed it or not
03:46 PM roycroft: snowflakes in austin mean you get to be weird at home for a while instead of being weird in public
04:03 PM Rab: Precious little weirdness in Austin these days...promotion kills all good things
04:10 PM roycroft: and governor abbott all the rest
04:10 PM Rab: hah
04:38 PM solarwind: what is this "centimeter" you speak of? I think you mean 394 thou
04:55 PM XXCoder: cold.
05:01 PM roycroft: i have to head back to the office to do the last disk swap on the fileserver upgrade, and then run other errands
05:01 PM roycroft: i'm really hoping to not have to go anywhere tomorrow at all
05:02 PM roycroft: even for an experienced winter driver, driving on ice is far too exciting for my blood
05:03 PM JT-Shop: I was a stunt driver in Alaska
05:03 PM * JT-Shop loves to drift a vehicle
05:03 PM roycroft: meaning you were a driver in alask
05:03 PM roycroft: a
05:04 PM JT-Shop: yeah, I only wiped out once...
05:04 PM Roguish: I saw a nice car yesterday, parked in a nearby town. a real, live, McLaren. pretty blue.
05:05 PM * JT-Shop goes to see what the hens are going to do tonight
05:05 PM XXCoder: twice for me, both at first year
05:06 PM XXCoder: first one was just a little slip, but it took me to edge of cliff lol id have died
05:06 PM XXCoder: second one my car spun twice, almost had stopped it at first spin
05:06 PM roycroft: slip-sliding away
05:08 PM XXCoder: fun'
05:09 PM XXCoder: man first one really scared me. I could literally look down and see road 10 feet down
06:54 PM Unterhausen: ice is fine as long as it's really cold. It gets super slippery at about 19F
06:54 PM Unterhausen: anything above about -7 Celsius, forget it
06:54 PM Unterhausen: much prefer snow
07:00 PM andypugh_: skunkworks: Your turn now, the component does X and Y offsets and calculates the taper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDxyNChCILU
07:02 PM 048AAOLBQ: I am not sure if that last message got through, the client seemed to be playing up.
07:02 PM 048AAOLBQ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDxyNChCILU
07:02 PM XXCoder: it did. im watching it now
07:03 PM 048AAOLBQ: Hey! I have a cool new name. Now I wonder how to fix that?
07:03 PM XXCoder: use /nick andy
07:03 PM 048AAOLBQ is now known as andypugh
07:04 PM andypugh: Ah, yes.
07:07 PM XXCoder: that was good video
07:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDxyNChCILU
07:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol - sorry - wasn't at the bottom I guess..
07:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Andy - very cool! fun isn't it?
07:08 PM XXCoder: I bet it was fun also
07:10 PM andypugh: I am almost most pleased with the animation of the generator function. (done in Excel with a VB script altering the input angle cell value)
07:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> that is cool - I don't understand it though. well - I sort of understand it.
07:10 PM XXCoder: gonna love the double pendants drawing that weird shape
07:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> My question would be - couldn't you just put the formula into the hal componant and have it do the work?
07:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (that is how I did the polygon)
07:12 PM andypugh: skunkworks: No, because the Xi in the equation is _not_ the angle of the spindle or the boring head.
07:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Ah
07:12 PM andypugh: And getting the Xi for a given spindle angle is really hard. I tried to do it in Wolfram Alpha, and it ran out of compute time.
07:13 PM andypugh: I think that sir is forgetting that I did polygon turning _years_ before you did :-)
07:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Sir?
07:15 PM andypugh: I decided to moderate my rudeness with a sorkinking of excessive politeness.
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol - ok
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Yes - you did. You are the reason I tried it.
07:17 PM CAKESLOB: so its not just a reuleaux triangle ? its some crazy math shit?
07:18 PM andypugh: Yes, it appears so.
07:18 PM andypugh: They claim perfect balance, perhaps that is part of the reason?
07:18 PM andypugh: (Though any triangle would also balance, I would have thought)
07:20 PM CAKESLOB: it looks like its drawn by a moon orbiting a planet or something
07:22 PM andypugh: Did you watch my video? It’s drawn around the Sun by a satellite orbiting a moon orbiting a planet.
07:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> andy - have you ever watched edge precision?
07:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1E6FVr7xrY
07:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I like him - he has a huge 6? axis mill and he sets tooling lenght with a dowel pin...
07:23 PM andypugh: Yes, I saw them making Capto holders last week, but they cheated by buying-in the tool blank at huge cost.
07:24 PM CAKESLOB: yeah, i didnt know how to describe it, im no rocket scientiest
07:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (I am lazy and usually set all my tool lengths with a dowel pin)
07:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> one of these days I need to setup the tool table.
07:25 PM CAKESLOB: automatic toolsetter is the laziest
07:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol - probably..
07:26 PM CAKESLOB: i dont even want to set tools if its not a toolsetter
07:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I would say it is smarter...
07:26 PM CAKESLOB: yeah smart is the thinking mans lazy
07:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Edge precision also has some sort of magic machine that can grind his mills from a blank.
07:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I don't know if you ever see it..
07:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GATVn8rLLBk
07:31 PM andypugh: Yes, seems like a fun toy.
08:17 PM solarwind: https://www.amazon.ca/Cordless-Impact-Battery-Brushless-Included/dp/B0CNRTGJQT
08:17 PM solarwind: bjorkintosh you still think the names are autogenerated?
08:18 PM solarwind: DeWraf.. seriously?
08:18 PM solarwind: *barf*
08:20 PM XXCoder: not all are autogenerated, but many are
08:36 PM solarwind: I am so tempted to make a tool company called Sum-Ting-Wong that makes high quality tools at non outrageous prices, but with disrptshunn wrote lik dis wun and supprot email engrish not so gud wun
08:37 PM solarwind: CaptHindsight how long before I get cancelled?
08:37 PM solarwind: But with actually good design and build quality and fit and finish
08:38 PM solarwind: and everything made in Canada
08:39 PM Tom_L: your veegee is staring to show
08:40 PM solarwind: That's very rude. That's just how I talk
08:45 PM roycroft: yes, it is very rude - you are a very rude person
08:45 PM roycroft: you were able to curb the rudeness somewhat when you were being banned for your behavior
08:46 PM roycroft: now you seem to think it's been long enough that you can get away with it again
08:46 PM roycroft: perhaps you should focus more on learning how to be a decent human being
08:46 PM Tom_L: don't want to start a feud, just clean it up a bit
08:46 PM roycroft: i'm done :)
08:48 PM roycroft: i am trying to find a dumbell
08:49 PM roycroft: in the before times the thrift stores had piles and piles of them
08:49 PM roycroft: i just spent two hours going to a half dozen thrift stores, and there is not one single dumbell at any of them
08:49 PM roycroft: hardly any exercise gear at all
08:50 PM roycroft: the world has changed in some very bizarre and unpredictable ways because of the pandemic
08:50 PM XXCoder: nobody has time for that
08:51 PM roycroft: i'm finishing up my book press, and it has a big acme screw on the top with a long handle
08:51 PM roycroft: traditionally book presses had brass or iron balls a the ends of the handle so one could spin the handle quickly to actuate the press
08:52 PM roycroft: i thought if i got a solid cast iron dumbell i could cut the ends off and use those as the handle ends
08:52 PM XXCoder: I saw one of those videos that basically did same
08:52 PM roycroft: i may need to find something different now
08:52 PM Tom_L: cannon ball
08:52 PM roycroft: those are expensive, tom_l
08:52 PM XXCoder: steel sphere with lead inside?
08:53 PM roycroft: 3" diameter iron balls are about $25 each plus shipping
08:53 PM roycroft: i've thought about something like that, xxcoder
08:53 PM roycroft: and that's how i may end up doing it - getting some hollow spheres, and filling them with lead shot and epoxy
08:55 PM XXCoder: eh why not just melt lead into it?
08:56 PM Tom_L: croquet ball
08:58 PM bjorkintosh: <solarwind> DeWraf.. seriously?
08:58 PM bjorkintosh: hahah
08:58 PM bjorkintosh: that's really ridiculous.
08:59 PM solarwind: roycroft "somewhat"? I did it _all_ for you. I would do _anything_ for you
09:00 PM solarwind: bjorkintosh yup I don't know how they sleep at night. Either it's a joke and they're having the last laugh, or they really actually thought it was a good strategy
09:01 PM XXCoder: easy. they cover themselves and close eyes, and sleep
09:02 PM XXCoder: you present a false duo choice
09:02 PM XXCoder: theres so many other possibilities
09:04 PM roycroft: i'd rather not deal with the lead fumes and mess around with the heating process, xxcoder
09:05 PM roycroft: lead shot in epoxy would be fine
09:05 PM XXCoder: ok
09:07 PM solarwind: lead doesn't produce fumes
09:07 PM solarwind: not at those temperatures anyway
09:07 PM Tom_L: roycroft, one big ball bearing :)
09:07 PM roycroft: -40 in parts of british columbia tonight
09:08 PM XXCoder: ah yes lets buy expensive precusion bearing ball in order to cut it into nonprecision use lol
09:08 PM roycroft: i'm glad that arctic storm that's coming here is mellowing on its way down
09:08 PM Tom_L: https://customironworks.com/metal-balls-c-1/solid-steel-balls-c-1_31/solid-steel-balls-30809-p-436.html
09:08 PM roycroft: there are a fw thrift stores left to check out
09:09 PM roycroft: if our roads are not covered in a centimeter of ice tomorrow i'll go check the rest of them out
09:09 PM roycroft: pricing isn't too bad on those, tom_l, but i think shipping would be a lot
09:09 PM Tom_L: https://www.superiorornamentalsupply.com/forged-solid-steel-ball-smooth-various-sizes-and-prices.html
09:10 PM Tom_L: they don't have a 3"
09:10 PM Tom_L: that's 2"
09:10 PM Tom_L: for 4 bux
09:10 PM roycroft: they have 3-1/4"
09:10 PM Tom_L: the last link?
09:10 PM roycroft: which would be about the right weight
09:10 PM roycroft: oh, no, i was looking at the first one
09:10 PM Tom_L: they have 2 or 4"
09:11 PM roycroft: the point of those balls, for something functional, is to add a lot of mass so that it's easy to spin the screw down
09:11 PM Tom_L: i get that
09:11 PM roycroft: 2" would be too adagio
09:11 PM roycroft: 3" is just right
09:11 PM roycroft: and also would look just right
09:11 PM XXCoder: i sphereness a requirement?
09:12 PM roycroft: no, which is wh i was looking for dumbells
09:12 PM Tom_L: cnc one from a brass bar
09:12 PM roycroft: a lot of solid dumbell ends are more like a thick disc than a sphere
09:12 PM XXCoder: looked at amazon on that, and eh prices is bit high. wonder if ebay has cheap used
09:12 PM roycroft: sure
09:12 PM roycroft: send me some 3" brass bar and i'll be happy to turn them myself
09:13 PM roycroft: i would not be happy putting out the $200 or so to buy the bar
09:13 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/extinguisher_nut/Brass_bar1.jpg
09:13 PM Tom_L: not quite 3"
09:13 PM roycroft: brass would be ideal for this, actually
09:13 PM XXCoder: 2 pound cast dumbell 3 dollars plus 10 usd shipping
09:13 PM Tom_L: i used that for my counterweight on the cnc for a while
09:13 PM Tom_L: now it got repurposed
09:13 PM roycroft: i'd want a 10 dumbell
09:13 PM XXCoder: 5 lb one, 14 usd shipped
09:14 PM roycroft: so i could get 2 ends about 4.5lbs each
09:14 PM XXCoder: 13 usd for one 10 lb one
09:14 PM roycroft: most of the cast ones i've found online are hex shaped, and i don't want that
09:14 PM XXCoder: https://www.ebay.com/itm/364648883554
09:15 PM roycroft: i want a sphere or a flattened sphere
09:15 PM Tom_L: pool balls would be cool
09:15 PM roycroft: i have a half dozen thrift stores to check out yet
09:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Lol.. I have searched for things recently that I would have thought easy to find..
09:15 PM XXCoder: kettlebells?
09:15 PM Tom_L: i remember when ppl put an 8 ball on their hurst shifters
09:16 PM roycroft: and if i don't find anything at them, there are a dozen or so thrift stores in springfield
09:16 PM roycroft: it's weird how things have changed, skunkworks8841
09:16 PM roycroft: stuff that used to be commonplace in the before times are now made of unobtanium
09:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> 24v ac relay being one.. in all the junk here too.. I thought.. ok.. maybe HVAC section of the big box stores.. nope
09:17 PM roycroft: the good news is that the book press will be fully functional without the handle ends
09:17 PM roycroft: it won't look right, and it won't spin down quickly, but it will work just fine
09:18 PM Tom_L: but you'll feel like something is missing
09:18 PM roycroft: so if it takes a while to find what i need at the price i want that's ok
09:18 PM roycroft: well, yeah, and it will be
09:18 PM roycroft: as well, the main handle is a piece of 3/4" steel pipe
09:18 PM roycroft: i'm going to turn some wooden sleeves to go over the pipe, but i can't turn them until i have the end pieces
09:18 PM roycroft: because i won't know the dimensions
09:18 PM roycroft: so it will look pretty rough
09:19 PM roycroft: but it will be functional, and that's the most important thing
09:19 PM XXCoder: if you had a lathe, probably grab 20 pound hex and turn it ddown?
09:20 PM roycroft: i have a lathe
09:21 PM Tom_L: git r dun then!
09:21 PM XXCoder: interrupted cuts is going to be so much fun
09:21 PM roycroft: i don't seem to have an account at c.o. ironworks
09:21 PM roycroft: i recall looking at their rough steel balls before, and getting a shipping quote that was pretty high
09:21 PM roycroft: like way more than the cost of the product
09:22 PM XXCoder: no pickups?
09:22 PM roycroft: but they won't give me a quote without an account now
09:22 PM roycroft: they are in arizona
09:22 PM roycroft: not only is that far away, it's arizone
09:22 PM roycroft: arizona
09:23 PM roycroft: a state high on my list of places i do not want to go to
09:23 PM roycroft: texas and florida being the leading places on the list :)
09:23 PM roycroft: they do have an office in richmond, bc
09:23 PM roycroft: i would not mind going there
09:23 PM roycroft: but that trip would cost more in fuel than their expensive shipping
09:24 PM * roycroft needs to go make pizza now
09:25 PM Tom_L: https://vxb.com/products/3-inch-diameter-chrome-steel-4-1-lbs-bearing-ball-g100
09:25 PM Tom_L: pretty
09:26 PM XXCoder: roycroft: yeah. no local scrap and stuff?
09:47 PM roycroft: i don't think i'm going to find an iron or steel ball at the scrap yard
09:48 PM XXCoder: yeah though can always round-ize it on lathe
09:48 PM roycroft: that's a lot of work
09:48 PM roycroft: especially since i've never made a ball-turning jig for my lathe
09:49 PM roycroft: and i'm not sure that if i decide to make one, i'd want to make it big enough to handle these balls
09:49 PM roycroft: i don't anticipate needing 3" diameter steel balls again for a while, at least
09:50 PM * roycroft is really hungy, and hopes the pizza is done soon
09:50 PM XXCoder: yeah I guess it would be flat ends
09:50 PM roycroft: all that thrift store running around made dinner late :(
09:50 PM XXCoder: i went lazy and got yought for dinner today
09:54 PM roycroft: 45 got slapped down again today
09:54 PM roycroft: he sued the nyt over their publishing his tax returns
09:54 PM roycroft: he lost
09:54 PM roycroft: the judge just ordered him to pay the nyt's legal fees
09:54 PM roycroft: $400k
09:55 PM roycroft: that's almost the cost of a hooker, adjusted for inflation
09:56 PM roycroft: so much winning
10:29 PM solarwind: FUCK
10:29 PM solarwind: the thing of nightmares just happened
10:29 PM solarwind: I was removing a circlip and of course it sprung off the pliers into a haystack of boxes
10:30 PM solarwind: no way in hell I'm going to find it. Or maybe it's a sign I need to tidy up
10:35 PM Tom_L: i try to limit their travel when possible
10:36 PM solarwind: Well at least a set of internal/external circlips is about $20 on amazon
10:37 PM Tom_L: the ones i don't like are the ones with no circle for the pliers to remove them
10:38 PM Tom_L: wiseco circlips
10:46 PM solarwind: could be worse
10:46 PM solarwind: Could have forgotten to wear goggles and it could have hit my eye
10:47 PM solarwind: At least it's a common thing, 18mm, just have to wait until Sunday for the kit to arrive. Or maybe go to princess auto and get it tomorrow
10:47 PM solarwind: roycroft is laughing his ass off right now, I know it
