01:36 AM solarwind: Rab not variable speed
01:48 AM solarwind: I realized there isn't a perfect tool, but controlling DC motors is very easy
01:48 AM solarwind: I'm just going to buy a bunch of used tools and make custom control boards for them
01:48 AM solarwind: Part of what I love about air tools is the infinite precision you get at the throttle
01:48 AM solarwind: And the older brushed DC tools did basic PWM on a brushed DC motor which is essentially a speed-limited torque control
01:48 AM solarwind: The modern brushless tools are insanely powerful and great for most things, but they're all constant-speed and the "electronic clutch" is about as good as shit
01:48 AM solarwind: the trigger is a constant speed control which is _not_ what you want when driving delicate screws
01:50 AM solarwind: They're all genuine high current sanyo/LG/Panasonic cells
01:50 AM jpa-: that's nice
01:50 AM jpa-: i buy cheaper crap and get cheaper crap :)
01:50 AM solarwind: knockoffs are never that
01:50 AM solarwind: the genuine ones always perform to spec
01:50 AM solarwind: My $1,000 programmable DC electronic load can confirm
01:51 AM solarwind: the knockoffs never perform to spec. Same device confirms.
01:53 AM bjorkintosh: knockoffs never perform to spec, according to the rule of knockoffs.
01:53 AM XXCoder: its chain too, if its a knockoff of knockoff, its even less spec
01:59 AM solarwind: Rebuilt packs perform better than new when using modern cells
01:59 AM solarwind: There are high capacity high discharge 2170 cells available now
03:09 AM Deejay: moin
04:13 AM Tom_L: morning
04:13 AM Tom_L: 27°F high 42°F
04:45 AM travis_farmer: Morning
04:48 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:26 AM travis_farmer: finally got my neurology appointment... but it isn't until May 15th... :-(
07:15 AM JT-Cave: back in Nov we got an appointment for my wife to see the spine surgeon at the end of April...
07:24 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
07:31 AM JT-Cave: freaking birds getting into the chicken runs is getting to be a pia
08:06 AM Tom_L: thought you fixed that
08:47 AM JT-Cave: I have to leave the door to Coop Deux run open until Victoria and Spaetzle come out then I can close that door...
08:48 AM Unterhausen: mouser website seems to be pretty broken right now if you actually go look for anything
09:19 AM Unterhausen: digikey's anti-robot protection should probably check to see if they failed to serve up a page before being invoked
09:23 AM Rab: That stuff's been a nightmare for me. I've had to resort to using Mouser in Chromium, I just can't get it to work in Firefox.
09:24 AM Rab: Obviously I brought it upon myself by blocking everything under the sun, but I enabled everything for Mouser and it still doesn't work.
09:25 AM Rab: Changing the user agent to some Windows stuff fixed the puzzle-piece captcha, for some sites.
09:35 AM JT-Shop: my sister is getting a new knee Monday
10:05 AM Roguish: good morning..... chilly, but sunny here. no rain until the weekend
10:05 AM roycroft: we have a winter storm watch beginning friday evening
10:06 AM Roguish: same system
10:06 AM roycroft: yes
10:06 AM roycroft: it's an arctic air mass that's down to vancouver bc today
10:06 AM roycroft: it should reach us late tomorrow
10:07 AM Roguish: chilly
10:07 AM roycroft: i'm anticipating very little, if any snow
10:07 AM roycroft: yup
10:07 AM roycroft: -6 at night over the weekend
10:07 AM Roguish: F or C?
10:07 AM roycroft: c
10:07 AM roycroft: and sunday our high may not get up to freezing
10:08 AM roycroft: but we'll be back to normal weather next week
10:08 AM roycroft: this looks like a 3 day thing
10:09 AM roycroft: i have to apply finish to a project i'm working on over the weekend
10:09 AM roycroft: i'm thinking about setting up a temporary finishing station inside the house so i don't have to have the heater running 24/7 in the garage shop
10:16 AM travis_farmer: cool! just got a call from neurology. they moved my May 15th appointment to tomorrow! :-)
10:27 AM solarwind: flyback dude lol what did you do
10:28 AM solarwind: I accidentally joined a mod channel and I saw them discussing that you were banned and were evading bans
10:29 AM solarwind: it was hilarious because they're talking super serious as if they were doing a criminal investigation
10:29 AM solarwind: my neighbour's car was stolen and the cop that asked if I had any surveillance footage wasn't even that serious
10:29 AM solarwind: this is hilarious, it explains so much
10:30 AM solarwind: discord/IRC mods in general (especially the kids) _really_ want to feel like they have some power
10:30 AM Rab: flyback has been persona non grata in certain EFnet channels for as long as I've been on IRC. A+ trolling notoriety
10:31 AM solarwind: The "worst" he's ever done is call me and other people a CANUCK lol
10:31 AM solarwind: things like this make me lose faith in humanity
10:31 AM solarwind: people get so fucking butthurt over nothing
10:31 AM Rab: Well, we had a Canadian mod who didn't appreciate it.
10:31 AM solarwind: of course not, he has to feel like he's treated with respect
10:32 AM solarwind: becuase his own life is so fucking pathetic
10:32 AM solarwind: who the hell actually gets upset at something somebody says online
10:32 AM solarwind: it just shows how weak and fragile youa re
10:33 AM solarwind: can yuo imagine if that guy was a cop? He'd probably assault anyone who looked at him funny
10:33 AM solarwind: holy shit that explains the cop situation in america
10:33 AM flyback: troll?
10:33 AM flyback: hardly
10:34 AM flyback: solarwind, what channel
10:34 AM solarwind: #hardware-ops
10:34 AM flyback: when did I evade a ban?
10:34 AM solarwind: no idea and even if you did so fucking what
10:35 AM flyback: I washed my hands of that channel long ago
10:35 AM flyback: I asked to rejoin just to ask questions about ordering a aptop for mom but they said no
10:35 AM solarwind: they're playing detective lol
10:35 AM solarwind: they want to feel like they have a job
10:36 AM solarwind: I joined by accident for 5 min and noticed. Just imagine the shit they discuss the rest of the time. Can you imagine having a life that empy...
10:37 AM flyback: oh well
10:37 AM solarwind: only thing that should be banned is spam/advertisements/bots
10:38 AM flyback: yeah rab what happen to that canadian mod btw
10:38 AM flyback: nothing bad I hope
10:38 AM Rab: flyback, no, he got bored with IRC and runs a thriving community on Discord. A story older than time itself.
10:39 AM flyback: well glad hes ok then
10:39 AM flyback: I seen too many people on irc die
10:39 AM Rab: It'll happen to all of us!
10:39 AM flyback: yeah im still waiting, heh
10:39 AM flyback: can't believe I will be 50 in march
10:39 AM flyback: ugh
10:45 AM solarwind: I got banned from a fountain pens channel on discord because I said "I have a Pilot vanishing point as well as a sum-ting-wong clone"
10:46 AM solarwind: apparently it's the most horrid racism they've ever heard
10:49 AM solarwind: I don't think they've ever had anyone beat the shit out of them as a kid. This is what happens when you're accustomed to a life of privilege and entitlement
10:51 AM flyback: hahaha
10:51 AM flyback: yep
10:51 AM flyback: I hate people like that
10:53 AM solarwind: I don't trust anyone without a sense of humour
10:53 AM solarwind: - Colonel O
10:53 AM solarwind: - Colonel O'Neill, Stargate SG-1
10:54 AM flyback: yeah was a ok show
10:54 AM flyback: except when they ripped off "the outer limits"
10:54 AM flyback: remember the one where the computer kept wiping people's memories as they vanished because the sheild size was shrinking and it got rid of people to compensate
10:55 AM flyback: that's a ripoff of a tol episode called "stream of conciousness"
10:57 AM solarwind: The good thing about real life is I can tell people to fuck off to their face
10:57 AM solarwind: I've only ever had to do it once or twice.
10:57 AM solarwind: Guess what... they're all big pussies
10:58 AM solarwind: But I also had the advantage of having my motorcycle jacket on most of the time when I'm out, and it has armoured shoulders and elbows
10:59 AM solarwind: And the biggest thing - not afraid to take a hit :P But never the first to swing because free speech should never be countered with violence
11:01 AM solarwind: flyback yes I do remember that, but didn't know it was a ripoff of the outer limits
11:02 AM flyback: they even almost completely cloned the head interface
11:02 AM flyback: https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRFW0iBpgiQDj51fmzwKV3EXdItb8euEf5RKxsdevXM75oovty2
12:15 PM JT-Shop: nap time
12:44 PM flyback: solarwind, heh they are mad that I got my folks on irc and walked them thru asking questions in #hardware about a laptop
12:45 PM flyback: and threaned me by going to libera staff
12:45 PM flyback: it's n ot like I joined the channel or ever want to join the channel again
12:46 PM Tom_L: trouble just follows you
12:46 PM Tom_L: :)
01:09 PM roycroft: is flyback right there in river city?
01:11 PM XXCoder: gatekeepers
04:42 PM CaptHindsight: solarwind: petty tyrants and hall guard syndrome
04:48 PM fdarling: does anyone still use LinuxCNC with a parallel port?
04:49 PM fdarling: I've done it back in 2016 or so, and I didn't have any problems. I was wondering if it works on 64-bit LinuxCNC, and if there are any known issues where you have to blacklist kernel modules to get it to work
04:49 PM fdarling: I am trying to help someone who hasn't graduated onto Mesa cards yet
04:50 PM Tom_L: my mesa card is connected via pp but not using the port direct
05:12 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:51 PM Unterhausen: for parport, you probably want to use an RTAI kernel. But there are mesa boards that will hook directly to a parport bob
05:51 PM Unterhausen: eg: any mesa board with a 25 pin connector, or a 26 pin header.
06:16 PM andypugh: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/TUVvo2rFk9Q
06:16 PM andypugh: I made a Capto reviever on the lathe.
06:17 PM andypugh: (reciever, that is)
06:19 PM XXCoder: interesting!
06:19 PM XXCoder: did you figure the design prciples, or?
06:20 PM andypugh: Sort of. There is an equation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqx_yxf1-xw
06:20 PM Tom_L: andy, that looks pretty good
06:21 PM Tom_L: do you have the mating part to check the fit?
06:21 PM andypugh: Yes, fits great.
06:21 PM Tom_L: try with dykem blue?
06:21 PM Tom_L: that's cool
06:22 PM XXCoder: interesting
06:22 PM andypugh: Dykem is the wrong blue. It’s a job for Stewarts Micrometer blue (the greasy prussian blue stuff)
06:22 PM Tom_L: well that's what i meant
06:23 PM Tom_L: paste like
06:23 PM andypugh: And I haven’t checked that far. I could, but might be disappointed. Also I am nto sure how well the taper/polygon is _meant_ to fit as the socket and spigot are specified with different angles.
06:24 PM andypugh: It’s a dual-contact, centred and prevented from rotation by the polygon, but it is also meant to clamp up hard against the face.
06:24 PM Tom_L: well still it's cool you got that far with it
06:29 PM andypugh: FWIW the shank taper is 1 26’ 21” and the socket is 1 25’ 31” both +/- 25”
06:30 PM Tom_L: deg min sec?
06:32 PM andypugh: Yes.
06:33 PM andypugh: I just drew it out and that gives 5 microns clearance at the inside end at nominal measurement.
06:33 PM andypugh: It’s a 1:20 taper, tweaked slightly
07:27 PM roycroft: one of my odd hobbies is collecting postage stamps with the images of composers whose works i've heard performed in person, from their country of birth
07:28 PM roycroft: it's actually kind of fun - a way to collect and look at postage stamps from all over the world without having to become a "serious" stamp collector
07:28 PM roycroft: at any rate, a while back i purchased a stamp from the former soviet union of rachmaninoff
07:28 PM roycroft: it never arrived
07:28 PM roycroft: and i've been trying to track it down or some time
07:29 PM roycroft: i just got notified today by the seller (from cyprus) that the stamp had been returned
07:29 PM roycroft: apparently the us sanctions on russian goods applied to it and customs would not allow it in this country
07:30 PM roycroft: it's a fripping postage stamp from 50 years ago issued by a country that no longer exists and shipped from another country
07:30 PM XXCoder: weird
07:30 PM * roycroft thinks someone at us customs got a bit overzealous
07:32 PM roycroft: i guess i'll just have to be on the lookout for a domestic supplier
07:52 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
09:40 PM solarwind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh9t3pEUCes
09:41 PM solarwind: Business Insider: how to take advantage of poor people and be a business asshole middleman
09:41 PM solarwind: the world would be a much better place if middlemen were all executed
09:54 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:04 PM roycroft: new forecast: only 25mm of rain tomorrow and no snow this weekend
10:05 PM XXCoder: it "might" snow next thursday then rain
10:05 PM XXCoder: next 2 days going to be cld
10:05 PM XXCoder: cold
10:05 PM roycroft: also, i just heard that ed broadbent has left the building :(
10:06 PM roycroft: it's still going to get cold her, but not as cold as the forecasts from earlier in the week
10:08 PM roycroft: unless this all changes again tomorrow, of course :)
10:08 PM roycroft: corvallis still has a chance of snow tomorrow, so we're right at the edge of the snow
10:10 PM roycroft: and portland is forecast to get a shit ton (for this part of the world) of snow on saturday
10:10 PM roycroft: 19cm
10:10 PM roycroft: a light dusting where i grew up :)
10:10 PM XXCoder: thats insane
10:16 PM roycroft: i should put something heavy in my pickup tomorrow, right over the rear axle, just in case we do get snow/ice
10:16 PM roycroft: my prius does fairly well in light snow, but not well on ice
10:16 PM roycroft: since the pickup sits high and has 4wd, it would be better if things get bad
10:18 PM roycroft: maybe i should park the prius in the back of the pickup :)
11:10 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:10 PM XXCoder: roycroft: snowing right now
11:10 PM XXCoder: not a lot, but snow is suriving contact with ground too
11:10 PM XXCoder: I guess when they predicted snow on next thurs, they meant THIS thurs
11:11 PM roycroft: it makes sense, since it started snowing in vancouver bc early this morning, and the snow will reach portland late tomorrow
11:19 PM Tom_L: 17F
11:19 PM XXCoder: fun. should be 20f here tomorrow
11:22 PM roycroft: it should stay above freezing here until saturday night/sunday morning
11:22 PM roycroft: but 25mm of rain tomorrow, and as much again on saturday
11:22 PM solarwind: How do you guys manage to have water cooler conversations in the only place you aren't forced to make small talk?
11:23 PM roycroft: our rivers are already really high
