12:19 AM CaptHindsight: try to find a new lamp today that has uranium in its base....
12:33 AM CaptHindsight: probably just lead based lamps now :)
12:33 AM XXCoder: just make base out of grinte. chances is it has small amount of uranium in it
12:33 AM roycroft: this one is the better part of a century old
12:33 AM CaptHindsight: +1
12:33 AM roycroft: it doesn't use electricity
12:33 AM CaptHindsight: natural glow?
12:33 AM XXCoder: if you see blue, you cant do anything, its already too late
12:33 AM roycroft: yeah, they stopped making this model with uranium glass prior to wwii
12:35 AM CaptHindsight: not much profit in urine donations
12:35 AM CaptHindsight: blood or plasma are the best sellers
12:48 AM CaptHindsight: roycroft: why is there an Illinois river in Oregon, was this like the Louisiana purchase?
01:34 AM XXCoder: https://hackaday.com/2023/12/28/making-the-case-for-wooden-wind-turbines-with-swedish-modvion/
01:34 AM XXCoder: pretty cool
01:40 AM XXCoder: awesome. andy video
01:43 AM Deejay: moin

02:42 AM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
03:04 AM rigid: I would need to mill a 2mm slot into a piece of aluminium. But I'm scared. :)
04:32 AM jpa-: i'd use a 1.5 mm single flute endmill for that
04:34 AM Tom_L: morning
04:41 AM Tom_L: rigid, how deep?
04:41 AM Tom_L: a keyslot cutter would work also
04:41 AM Tom_L: https://ecomm.productivity.com/ecomm_images/items/large/32900_pic.gif
04:45 AM rigid: jpa-: i can't really run at low rpm with high torque and I risk ruining my drillbit.
04:46 AM rigid: too many drills/millbits have let their life here, after being baked with smeared aluminium :)
04:46 AM rigid: Tom_L: 5-7mm deep but i'm going to use a manual drill/millpress from a friend for now. That does very low RPM at ultra high torque.
04:46 AM Tom_L: woodruff cutter wouldn't work for you then. need lower rpm and more torque
04:47 AM rigid: but i'll give aluminium a shot at some point for sure.
04:47 AM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/144496008296
04:47 AM Tom_L: i've used those to cut slots
04:48 AM rigid: wow, there's really a vast amount of possible millbits
04:48 AM rigid: is there some nice overview for novices? maybe sortable by material or something?
04:49 AM rigid: that'd probably be some "Milling 101" book
04:49 AM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ls1XabACpKI
04:50 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A12_New/A12_batch2.jpg
04:52 AM rigid: that's some solid milling. don't you use oil/cooling for aluminium?
04:52 AM Tom_L: mist coolant
04:52 AM rigid: Tom_L: argh why port 81? that's blocked here :)
04:52 AM rigid: what kind of mist is it? some alcohol?
04:52 AM rigid: deionized water?
04:52 AM Tom_L: regular cnc water based coolant
04:53 AM rigid: ah
04:53 AM rigid: nice, that way it's way less messy
04:54 AM Tom_L: https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/83853812
04:55 AM Tom_L: i can get it local in gallon size
05:23 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:29 AM jpa-: rigid: 1.5 mm endmill is fine with 10000 RPM
05:29 AM jpa-: (in aluminum)
05:29 AM jpa-: doesn't even need coolant, though that helps if the cut settings are not ideal
06:46 AM travis_farmer: Morning :-)
07:11 AM JT-Cave: glad to see you left the dark side
07:11 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
07:11 AM travis_farmer: the dark side?
07:12 AM JT-Cave: he sounds a bit hoarse this morning
07:15 AM travis_farmer: mentaly, i am still very much in the dark side. going through a lot lately, that is very hard to deal with. most days i just try to sleep it off...
08:33 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:34 AM Tom_L: quiet friday... everybody's junk must be running smooth
09:40 AM JT-Shop: or just noodle heading about
09:41 AM Tom_L: getting an early start on year-end paperwork
09:41 AM Tom_L: then off a couple days
10:05 AM JT-Shop: I just walked past one of the deer that hang out here and she didn't even flinch
10:07 AM Tom_L: fun
10:10 AM travis_farmer: well, i managed to get out in my shop and update the OS updates on my machine computer, but it didn't pull in the new LinuxCNC... likely because it was pulled from testing? not sure.
10:17 AM Tom_L: travis_farmer, get the deb
10:17 AM Tom_L: and install it locally
10:18 AM Tom_L: http://buildbot2.highlab.com/debian/dists/
10:18 AM travis_farmer: already downloaded, will install later :-)
10:24 AM JT-Shop: if you're running testing then lcnc won't be there, if your running any older os it will
10:24 AM JT-Shop: https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=linuxcnc-uspace
10:26 AM Tom_L: that link doesn't have 2.9.2.xx yet or if it ever will
10:30 AM JT-Shop: dunno, did 2.9.2 fix something important?
10:30 AM Tom_L: i'm not sure
10:30 AM Tom_L: i put it on my test pc
10:31 AM JT-Shop: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/29-forum-announcements/51111-linuxcnc-2-9-2-has-been-released#289056
11:35 AM mrec: what is the correct name for those go-nogo test sticks?
11:36 AM Tom_L: https://dmctools.com/products/gaging-verification/go-no-go-gages
11:36 AM Tom_L: that's what they're called
11:38 AM Tom_L: they should be certified at a lab too at 68°F
11:42 AM Tom_L: if you need more accuracy, use an air gage
11:43 AM Tom_L: https://www.judgetool.com/products/mahr-dimensionair-universal-air-gage-single-or-dual-master-system-2098125/
11:44 AM mrec: thanks
11:44 AM Tom_L: you can find those used
11:45 AM Tom_L: but you gotta have the test set for each size hole
11:56 AM solarwind: Furnace is being _really_ wonky and none of the blink error codes make sense. I cleaned the flame sensor but it kills the flame immediately for no apparent reason
11:56 AM solarwind: Pressure sensors all look good too
11:56 AM solarwind: Going to bypass the control board and hold the gas solenoid open with an external circuit.
11:57 AM solarwind: If I die, y'all know what happened. CaptHindsight you can have my toys
11:58 AM solarwind: Flame sensor LED lights up too, albeit a bit late. Maybe it thinks the flame is starting up too late and the nozzles just need some cleaning
11:59 AM solarwind: I think that's the reason. The spark plug is on the bottom jet and the flame jets ignite from bottom to top, and the flame sensor is on the top. It takes a second for the top most jet to ignite, which it probably thinks is too late for whatever reason.
12:00 PM solarwind: It's one of those shitty HOT DAWG furnaces
12:00 PM solarwind: wastes 20% of its energy in the exhaust gas... pathetic
12:01 PM solarwind: has big fat pipes running through it and the flame pointing at the pipes. Such a crude piece of shit
12:01 PM CaptHindsight: ok thanks, but now I can't travel
12:02 PM Tom_L: maybe the thermocouple is bad
12:02 PM solarwind: There is no thermocouple, it's a flame sensor
12:03 PM Tom_L: oh
12:03 PM solarwind: I already cleaned it and verified that it's working. And the control board sees that it's working too. The flame LED lights up when the flame touches it
12:03 PM CaptHindsight: solarwind: try not to die until I get better, thanks in advance
12:03 PM solarwind: it's just that by the time the flame "climbs up" from the bottom to the top jet, it already expects the flame to be on, but I guess due to dirty nozzles or whatever, it takes a second longer
12:04 PM solarwind: Going to bypass the solenoid for a few seconds and make sure it registers that the flame is on
12:04 PM Tom_L: bypass the gas regulator too :)
12:05 PM solarwind: Tom_L it's a honeywell gas solenoid valve with a built in regulator
12:05 PM solarwind: I'm going to ask them to upgrade the pressure at the meter. Right now my service line is 0.25 bar into a 1" pipe
01:04 PM Unterhaus_: local busses are cng
01:05 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
01:05 PM Unterhausen: danger of up-arrow
01:22 PM solarwind: fixed :)
01:23 PM solarwind: tradesperson asshole used a nylon zip tie as a hose barn on the hot side of the pressure sensor for the exhaust motor, the thing that directly pumps out hot exhaust and whose housing is in direct contact with hot exhaust gasses
01:25 PM solarwind: Shitty control board flashed the wrong error code because the initial hot exhaust gasses from the flame were enough to cause a small leak that would close itself when the blower was cool
01:25 PM solarwind: once again, tradespeople show to be universally incompetent
01:27 PM solarwind: tradespeople as in electricians, mechanics, plumbers, HVAC
01:34 PM roycroft: you probably won't get more than 0.25 bars at your meter
01:35 PM roycroft: that's right at the threshhold of medium pressure service, and may be all your local utility will provide without reengineering the run to your meter, which would cost you five figures
01:38 PM bjorkintosh: that's a hand.
01:42 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> I hate waiting
01:43 PM Tom_L: heh
01:43 PM Tom_L: random
01:48 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Lol
01:49 PM XXCoder: do anyone ever like waiting?
01:52 PM bjorkintosh: yes. Remeber, a watched pot never boils ...
01:52 PM bjorkintosh: over.
01:52 PM bjorkintosh: A watched pot never boils over.
01:55 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Going to the Cotton Pickin BBQ for lunch
01:56 PM bjorkintosh: sounds labor intensive!
01:57 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Fortunately cotton pickin is done for the year
01:57 PM bjorkintosh: just in time.
01:57 PM bjorkintosh: enjoy!
01:58 PM XXCoder: good thing, or they would have forced you to pick some to pay for lunch
02:02 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Well it's closed
02:04 PM Tom_L: hope you got a Plan B
02:04 PM XXCoder: or plan M, mcdonalds ;)
02:04 PM Tom_L: oh god no
02:05 PM XXCoder: B is burger king right?
02:07 PM Tom_L: bennigan's
02:08 PM XXCoder: hmm havent went to burger king for quite a while now
02:11 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> never picked cotton... picked blueberries... and corn...
02:14 PM Unterhausen: turns out it's a lot easier to connect to wifi if you use the right password, who coulda known?
02:30 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Went Mexican
02:30 PM XXCoder: so, taco bell? ;)
02:31 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> No way
02:31 PM XXCoder: :)
02:33 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Local Mexican restaurant
02:33 PM XXCoder: nice
02:34 PM roycroft: the only time that taco bell "food" resembles mexican food is when it is exiting the body, not when entering
02:35 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> LOL
02:35 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> El Bracero of Sikeston
02:36 PM XXCoder: lol
02:42 PM * roycroft can actually hardly speak from experience here, as he hasn't been to a taco bell in probably 40 years
02:43 PM roycroft: i don't anticipate it's gotten any better though
02:43 PM XXCoder: it got worse
02:43 PM XXCoder: the bean have infected all food items now
02:45 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> The music is Mexican rap lol
02:45 PM roycroft: i was listening to celtic music radio last night, a radio station in glasgow
02:46 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> i thought mexican rap was what happened when you crapped the next day 😉
02:46 PM roycroft: and at one point they played some celtic/scottish rap
02:46 PM roycroft: it was surreal
02:52 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Internet radio?
02:53 PM roycroft: yes
02:53 PM roycroft: i have an internet radio in my kitchen and in my bedroom
02:55 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08NJB7K1H/
02:55 PM roycroft: it's a pretty decent radio
02:56 PM bjorkintosh: too decent
02:56 PM bjorkintosh: 159?
02:57 PM roycroft: yes
02:57 PM roycroft: while it is not a bose, it has pretty good sound
02:57 PM roycroft: and a lot of good features
02:58 PM roycroft: i paid less for mine - it appears to have gone up quite a bit in price, but it's still a good value at that price
02:58 PM roycroft: iirc i paid about $120 each or mine
02:59 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Looks 70ish
02:59 PM roycroft: $129.99 each
02:59 PM roycroft: it does have a kind of retro look
02:59 PM roycroft: but not in a good way - my main criticism would be that it's not all that attractive
03:00 PM roycroft: but it works well
03:00 PM roycroft: my other criticism is that after it does an os upgrade (which it does a couple times/year or so, and does so automatically), some of the internet presets break
03:00 PM roycroft: and i have to go reprogram them
03:00 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> So long as it's not avacodo green it's cool
03:01 PM roycroft: but i don't totally fault ocean digital for that
03:01 PM roycroft: they use a third party index service
03:01 PM roycroft: and a lot of radio stations change their streaming url over time
03:01 PM roycroft: stations occasionally break even when there's not an os upgrade, and when they do, they usually don't work again by doing a station search until the next os upgrade
03:02 PM roycroft: i can always enter an absolute url, of course, and not add them by a search
03:17 PM roycroft: i have a couple tivoli model one radios that are the ones i listen to the most, especially the one in my office
03:18 PM roycroft: tivoli was co-founded by henry kloss, so you can imagine the quality of those radios
03:20 PM roycroft: those have actually come down in price - i paid $175 for mine in the early 2000s, and that model is now selling for $143
03:39 PM Tom_L: JT i prefer harvest gold go avacado green :)
03:39 PM Tom_L: gawd, what were they thinking?
03:42 PM Tom_L: been to a couple mom n pop mexican restaurants here that were really good but not that last one
03:44 PM * roycroft has a harvest gold kitchen stove
03:45 PM roycroft: my house was built in 1973, and it's the original stove
03:45 PM roycroft: it's a built-in, and an odd size, so hard to replace without an extensive remodel
03:45 PM roycroft: if it were avocado green then the extensive remodel would be easily justified
03:45 PM Tom_L: heh
03:45 PM roycroft: but harvest gold is not quite offensive enough
03:46 PM roycroft: the stove top is stainless steel - only the front and oven door are harvest gold
03:46 PM roycroft: i could probably repaint the front, but it's never seemed worth it
03:47 PM Tom_L: you've got possible moving plans in the near future anyway
03:49 PM XXCoder: tc just isnt tc without shelves with random stuff background.
03:49 PM XXCoder: hes moving so he have one video thats sorta in middle of it, so stuff is at new stage
04:03 PM roycroft: yes, it's not an issue for me at all
04:03 PM roycroft: although repainting it, if done well, would enhance the property value
04:03 PM XXCoder: yeah video is still enjoyable
04:05 PM XXCoder: man I dont know how he can make pinball video so interesting lol
04:08 PM roycroft: he's a pinball video wizard, there has to be a twist
04:10 PM XXCoder: not really lol
04:21 PM _unreal_: FINALLY finaly finally finally I got my code to work
04:21 PM _unreal_: everything works on the proto board now.
04:21 PM _unreal_: now I can move it over to the PCB I designed some time ago
04:22 PM _unreal_: I gave up trying to do the tricky load handling stuff
04:22 PM _unreal_: and just have both outputs in mirror
04:22 PM _unreal_: what ever
04:22 PM * JT-Shop needs to start a fire
04:23 PM roycroft: i thought it was always burning since the world's been turning
04:24 PM _unreal_: ?? no I thought he was refering to me and my back side. NO NEED jobs done
04:25 PM _unreal_: next step is get the attiny85 onto my PCB and test the pumps
04:25 PM _unreal_: :S
04:25 PM _unreal_: with luck nothing fails on that now
04:27 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
04:35 PM * t4nk_fn hands _unreal_ a celebratory cigar
04:56 PM _unreal_: ok just finished testing on the dual PUMPS
04:56 PM _unreal_: it works
04:56 PM _unreal_: it works
04:57 PM _unreal_: everything works. the POT controls the speed, and the enable pin works to enable/disable both outputs
04:58 PM t4nk_fn: what's a pump?
05:03 PM _unreal_: air pump
05:04 PM _unreal_: I got 2 small air pumps from vacuum food savers
05:06 PM _unreal_: they run on 12v, so the idea is too have two of them in parallel with PWM speed control. and a hose running all the way to the spindle. It will have a wand with a fine tip that can be adjusted in out and angle.
05:06 PM _unreal_: the goal is to have a chip clearing system
05:08 PM _unreal_: with positive air thats strong but focused. That way I'm not blowing out my dust shoe. but clearing the chips as they are made in the deep cavities so the vacuum can collect them. rather then the chips collecting in deep areas. That cause chip welding.
05:10 PM t4nk_fn: ic
05:23 PM _unreal_: have you gotten anywhere with your CNC stuff? I've been very very very very delayed no thanks to my father and his health.
05:26 PM _unreal_: stage4 cancer for 5 years now and he keeps stair stepping down. Considering how many years I was a nurse. I dont get it. I've delt with so many people that had a fraction of the health issues he has and they pass away in the blink of an eye. He (my father) litterallyt have everything and multi infections, failing arteries, multi fiskures and on and on and on. and matastic cancer....... 5 years and he's still walking around.
05:26 PM _unreal_: I dont get it..... really messing me up. and all my sibs are in other states. sigh.
05:26 PM _unreal_: Other wise I'd have gotten this new cnc machine doner.
05:26 PM _unreal_: done
05:27 PM _unreal_: :S I really need to relocate my wrking cnc machine and the new one. Then I could really work on all sides of the new one with ease. problem is its a massive undertaking to do that job
05:27 PM _unreal_: and for all I know my father is going to pass away tomorrow. At which point I dont know if I willl have to pack up and move or what not
05:27 PM _unreal_: my situation is just mind blowing.
05:31 PM t4nk_fn: yeah, I've picked things up a bit again recently.. made a board that holds the cnc shield, and pops onto my stm board
05:31 PM t4nk_fn: so now I got rid of all the loose wires and breadboards and whatnot
05:32 PM t4nk_fn: it's a lot better now..
05:35 PM t4nk_fn: I 'designed' some pens to put on my machine... they go right into the spindle, nice and short, and they got a spring
05:37 PM t4nk_fn: been making some drawings, and yesterday I decided to plot a trianlge, to check if my axes are true, at least in the x-y direction
05:40 PM t4nk_fn: it's pretty close as it is, but I think it can be better.. need to print some bigger triangles I think, to better spot the deviation. I have some kind of set-screws on the y-axes so I should be able to easily adjust things
06:15 PM _unreal_: Draw a large square, and cross check it from corner to corner. if your the same dimentions then its square
06:16 PM _unreal_: currently printing the second air intake filter for the air compressors
06:16 PM _unreal_: When I get to it. I'll feed both air compressors super lube into the intake and let em run
06:17 PM _unreal_: they are dry pumps and will never see load
06:17 PM _unreal_: the idea is to just push air
06:17 PM _unreal_: for chip clearing
06:24 PM _unreal_: I figure its a good idea to filter the intake air for the pumps. even if its just running through to blow away chips.
07:24 PM roycroft: i just heard that bruce guthro passed earlier this year :(
07:26 PM * roycroft brings a runrig cd out to the shop with him as a tribute to bruce
11:47 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> @Go go on about this stm thing.....
