12:24 AM NoSpark: any advice on using a nvidia card with linuxcnc?
12:36 AM NoSpark: I'm havign a bit of trouble with jitter spikes
01:57 AM Deejay: moin
04:39 AM Tom_L: morning
04:50 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:55 AM Tom_L: 29°F High 35°F
05:06 AM JT-Cave: 39°F Slight Chance Rain/Snow then Chance Rain High: 44°F
05:07 AM JT-Cave: all the precip is north of me atm
10:27 AM NoSpark: I have a pyvcp diagnostics panel, is it possible to embed it into qtdragon somehow?
10:32 AM JT-Shop: no clue here, I've never looked at a gui with dragon in the name
10:37 AM NoSpark: I'm trying to load it external, but I'm having trouble with the pins not being ready...
10:38 AM NoSpark: POSTGUI_HALCMD = loadusr -W pyvcp diag.xml
10:38 AM NoSpark: POSTGUI_HALFILE = diag.hal
10:39 AM NoSpark: diag.hal:3: Pin 'pyvcp.led-ready' does not exist
10:39 AM Tom_L: check for spelling
10:39 AM Tom_L: or put something in the postgui.hal file
10:42 AM NoSpark: i think it might be becasue pyvcp is changeing the pin name
10:43 AM NoSpark: nope, it seems the ini commands POSTGUI_HALCMD and POSTGUI_HALCMD are run in parrelel
10:52 AM NoSpark: loadusr -Wn pyvcp pyvcp -c pyvcp diag.xml seems to fix it
10:54 AM JT-Shop: I don't even see POSTGUI_HALCMD in the ini docs
10:56 AM JT-Shop: I only see HALCMD and POSTGUI_HALFILE in the docs
10:56 AM JT-Shop: maybe it's something the silly dragon made up
10:56 AM NoSpark: you really dislike qtdragon
11:00 AM Tom_L: axis 'just works' tm
11:08 AM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/gui/qtdragon.html#_post_gui_hal_file
11:09 AM Tom_L: [HAL]
11:09 AM Tom_L: POSTGUI_HALCMD = loadusr qtvcp test_probe
11:09 AM Tom_L: POSTGUI_HALCMD = loadusr qtvcp test_led
11:09 AM Tom_L: POSTGUI_HALCMD = loadusr halmeter
11:14 AM JT-Cave: no, I think it's really stupid to name a cnc machine controller gui like it's a gameboy
11:28 AM Tom_L: 2.9.2.14 installed
11:33 AM JT-Cave: emc?
11:34 AM bjorkintosh: JT-Cave, why's that?
11:35 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, yes
11:35 AM JT-Cave: just my opinion that a machine controller gui name should reflect what it does and not a game
11:35 AM JT-Cave: cool
11:35 AM bjorkintosh: I can see a CNC gas cutter being branded as dragon!
11:35 AM bjorkintosh: oh.
11:36 AM Tom_L: qttoolbreaker
11:37 AM JT-Cave: well that would be descriptive for sure qtdragoncutter
11:37 AM Tom_L: i wonder how many probes have been broken setting up a gui for probing
11:38 AM bjorkintosh: Tom_L, perhaps too many. but that's because the state of the art continues to rely on human operators to identify obstructions.
11:39 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i just set it up on the test pc.. the 2.9.2
11:39 AM bjorkintosh: we know where the probe sits, and we can know where it's going.
11:39 AM bjorkintosh: because cameras.
11:39 AM bjorkintosh: Cameras were first invented more than 200 years ago.
11:40 AM bjorkintosh: and this guy does some really sophisticated things with them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3novypPqos
11:40 AM bjorkintosh: (in the present age)
11:47 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, just fixed an error with classicladder and will bump the version after my nap...
11:48 AM Tom_L: ok, if i remember i'll check this evening
11:49 AM JT-Cave: nap time then to finish up armoring up the Coop Uno run
11:49 AM Tom_L: lunch then nap
12:06 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
12:06 PM Unterhausen: at least if there is dragon in the name of your gui, you are guaranteed no namespace pollution
02:01 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, #58 is up
02:03 PM jwash: hi everyone, what's the cheapest route to rehabing an old cnc without a controller. I have a frame and steppers, but no control box. I have an old pc that i can install linuxcnc on. It does have a parallel port too.
02:04 PM Tom_L: need stepper drivers too?
02:05 PM jwash: no
02:05 PM jwash: yes
02:05 PM jwash: lol
02:05 PM jwash: drivers, some type of breakout board
02:05 PM Tom_L: how big is the mill?
02:05 PM Tom_L: lots of unknows here
02:05 PM Tom_L: stepper ratings?
02:06 PM jwash: it's an old onefinity x50 journeyman
02:06 PM jwash: 1 sec, i'll post pics of the steppers
02:07 PM Tom_L: so a chinaco gantry
02:07 PM jwash: https://imgur.com/AgsmASS.png
02:07 PM Tom_L: some cheap BOB hooked to the parport and some leadshine (maybe) stepper drivers
02:08 PM jwash: https://imgur.com/nNkRJYA.png
02:08 PM Tom_L: are those nema23?
02:08 PM jwash: 1 sec
02:08 PM jwash: let me look them up
02:08 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> 23 in the partnumber
02:09 PM Tom_L: or what's that gecko driver that has 3-4 on the board?
02:09 PM Tom_L: 540?
02:09 PM jwash: yes https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/nema-23-bipolar-1-8deg-1-9nm-269oz-in-2-8a-3-2v-57x57x76mm-4-wires-23hs30-2804s
02:09 PM jwash: nema 23
02:09 PM Tom_L: need a power supply?
02:09 PM jwash: yes
02:09 PM jwash: https://www.ebay.com/itm/393601074208 is the breakout board i was looking at
02:09 PM jwash: https://www.ebay.com/itm/393601074208
02:09 PM jwash: i can buy a cheap 24v power supply from ebay
02:10 PM Helium: Henlo, what's the preferred cable type to wire the stationary bits(servo drive/VFD) to the mesa board?
02:10 PM Tom_L: shielded wire
02:11 PM Helium: I'm assuming network cable, but what wire thickness and how many shields does it really need?
02:11 PM Tom_L: enough
02:11 PM Tom_L: how long is a string?
02:11 PM jwash: i was looking at these stepper drivers: https://www.ebay.com/itm/175921796578
02:11 PM Helium: Tom_L, that's a fair point
02:12 PM Tom_L: jwash, so you're wanting to build a cnc from cheap printer parts
02:12 PM jwash: i have the frame already made and assembled
02:12 PM jwash: just no control box
02:13 PM jwash: even has a 2.2kw spindle
02:13 PM jwash: https://www.onefinitycnc.com/product-page/pro-series-journeyman-48-x32-cut-area
02:13 PM jwash: that machine minus the control box
02:14 PM Tom_L: ball screws or acme thread?
02:14 PM jwash: ball screws
02:16 PM Tom_L: https://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/gecko-drivers/gecko-diver-g540-4-axis-driver
02:18 PM jwash: could it also control a laser module?
02:19 PM Tom_L: you're not going to get the performance from a parallel port that you would get with a mesa card
02:19 PM Tom_L: 7i96s for example
02:20 PM Tom_L: i'd check the latency on the pc you plan to use first
02:20 PM jwash: for the 7196s it would interface via ethernet
02:20 PM Tom_L: yes
02:20 PM jwash: eliminating the latency issue
02:20 PM Tom_L: mostly
02:21 PM jwash: are the stepper drivers i linked ok for this setup?
02:21 PM Tom_L: unless the pc is really old
02:21 PM jwash: no, core2quad
02:21 PM jwash: but i'm ok with ethernet
02:22 PM jwash: i have a wired gigabit connection run where the machine will be installed
02:24 PM flyback: might want to use shielded cables
02:24 PM flyback: cause of all the farting from cnc motors
02:24 PM JT-Cave: Tom_L, thanks for the pr
02:25 PM Tom_L: yup
02:26 PM Tom_L: jwash, you won't run it thru your main ethernet cabling. it should be on a card by itself typically on 10.10.10.x ip addy
02:26 PM jwash: i have a spare router that i can use
02:26 PM Tom_L: you won't use a router either
02:26 PM jwash: oh wow, direct to pc?
02:27 PM Tom_L: yes
02:27 PM jwash: the pc can be connected to the main network via another interface right
02:27 PM Tom_L: yes
02:28 PM jwash: let me make a list
02:28 PM Tom_L: on mine i went with the gecko 203v drivers which are nearly bulletproof and a 48v supply with mesa cards
02:30 PM Tom_L: you can find cheaper drivers
02:32 PM jwash: https://hastebin.skyra.pw/xahiyiruso.bash
02:32 PM jwash: that's the list i've got now
02:33 PM Roguish: jwash, most important. figure out what you really need, not just what you want. and what your expectations are.
02:33 PM Tom_L: Helium, i would find some shielded say #22 wire or thereabouts
02:33 PM Tom_L: jwash, do what Roguish so you only need to buy it once
02:33 PM jwash: Southwire/Tappan 18/4C Shielded Security/Control Cable Plenum CMP White /50ft
02:34 PM jwash: 22awg would be fine though, i'll go withthat
02:34 PM Tom_L: for data that's plenty
02:34 PM Tom_L: i used 18 on my stepper drivers
02:34 PM jwash: i'd just ground each cable to my main ground like the spindle
02:35 PM jwash: ok, so the wire i linked should be good then
02:35 PM Helium: Yeah 22AWG about the size I was looking for, can't find it as network cable though. Well not as stranded core anyway
02:35 PM jwash: how about the stepper drivers, i can't afford $140 apiece
02:35 PM Tom_L: Helium, why do you need network cabling?
02:35 PM jwash: i have 2 y motors and desire to run a driver on each
02:36 PM Tom_L: i doubt you need twisted pair there
02:36 PM Helium: Tom_L don't really need network cabling but it seemed to be the most readily available
02:36 PM Tom_L: jwash, the gecko 540 would give you 4 i think
02:37 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/22-awg-shielded-wire/s?k=22+awg+shielded+wire
02:37 PM jwash: yea, and i could mirror the y
02:37 PM jwash: and get a rotational axis
02:38 PM Tom_L: you may not have enough z travel for a rotary
02:39 PM jwash: i'm making a custom platform that will give me adjustable z
02:40 PM jwash: i'll be able to remove the center and put the rotational assembly lower than the spoilboard
02:40 PM flyback: Tom_L, does have a good point about running a private cable to a 2nd nic or at least a vlan for security reasons
02:40 PM Tom_L: no, that's just how you do it on mesa cards
02:41 PM * Tom_L slaps flyback with a canuck
02:41 PM Helium: <Tom_L> Amazon netherlands doesn't give me a lot of actually shielded stuff unfortunately
02:41 PM Tom_L: helps to know where you are
02:42 PM Helium: Haha yeah
02:42 PM Tom_L: twisted pair cat5-6 would probably work
02:42 PM Tom_L: but i'd want shielded personally
02:43 PM Helium: Yeah I definitely want shielded
02:43 PM Tom_L: VFD's are noisy
02:43 PM flyback: yeah use shielded
02:43 PM flyback: in a manfacturing env
02:44 PM flyback: we had a customer that kept having pc's crash every time one of their big rig machines farted
02:44 PM flyback: farting out big emf
02:46 PM Helium: Stranded wire is preferred I guess?
02:46 PM Tom_L: yes
02:47 PM Tom_L: Helium, this being for the VFD... how's the rest of the machine wired?
02:48 PM Helium: Still the original wiring and control
02:48 PM Tom_L: commercial cnc?
02:48 PM Helium: Yeah, bridgeport 412
02:48 PM Tom_L: ok
02:49 PM Tom_L: you never know if you're dealing with a chinaco tabletop pos or a cincinnati milacron etc
02:54 PM Tom_L: Helium, you have a farnell
02:54 PM Tom_L: they sell wire
02:55 PM Tom_L: https://nordencommunication.com/public/en-nl/product/6-core-22-awg-multi-conductor-cable-eia-rs-232
02:56 PM jwash: https://hastebin.skyra.pw/wicevebeho.bash
02:58 PM Tom_L: jwash, the vfd could be analog or modbus probably
02:58 PM Tom_L: check that
03:00 PM jwash: it is modbus
03:01 PM Tom_L: does it support analog too?
03:02 PM jwash: i'm not sure, let me get the manual
03:02 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, does the 7i96s have room for modbus?
03:02 PM JT-Shop: I'm not sure, that would be a good question for Peter
03:03 PM Tom_L: it has one sserial which i think you would use instead of sserial but i'm not positive
03:03 PM JT-Shop: isn't modbus usually done through the serial port?
03:03 PM Tom_L: ^^
03:03 PM Tom_L: yeah
03:03 PM Tom_L: i think
03:03 PM Tom_L: that's why i asked you :)
03:04 PM Tom_L: i doubt he'd get very far with modbus on a parport
03:05 PM JT-Shop: I "think" the GS2 component is using modbus via the serial port
03:05 PM jwash: now i'm not sure, hy02d223b is the vfd model
03:06 PM Tom_L: https://github.com/jasonwebb/tc-maker-4x4-router/blob/master/docs/spindle-and-coolant-system/Huanyang%20HY02D223B%20VFD%20manual.pdf
03:07 PM jwash: https://mans.io/item/huanyang-electrical/hy02d223b
03:07 PM Tom_L: my link wasn't much help
03:07 PM jwash: nor mine
03:07 PM jwash: no result for search of modbus or analog
03:07 PM jwash: i have the physical manual
03:08 PM jwash: control mode spwm?
03:08 PM Tom_L: https://eshop.anders-elektro.cz/fotky76162/fotov/_ps_456Manual-zkraceny.pdf
03:09 PM He2: Tom_L Thanks, finding some stuff on TME and mouser as well
03:09 PM jwash: so i looks like it is modbus, would it be compatible with direct connect?
03:09 PM jwash: is the ethernet a straight through or crossover cable?
03:09 PM Tom_L: just a normal patch cable
03:10 PM Tom_L: pcw is a smart guy
03:18 PM roycroft: tommy smothers has let the building :(
03:40 PM JT-Shop: I've not seen Peter on here in a few days
03:50 PM roycroft: he may be away for the holidays
03:52 PM JT-Shop: might just be relaxing, I've had emails from the CFO
04:49 PM roycroft: this peruvian walnut is really nice wood, but it's a bit odd
04:50 PM roycroft: it's a true walnut, and has very good color, but the grain is almost like mahogany - that back and forth striped stuff
04:50 PM roycroft: no cathedrals like with the more common species of walnut
04:50 PM roycroft: it's very pretty, and definitely walnut-colored, but doesn't look like walnut to me
04:52 PM * roycroft hopes it is not blotcny
04:52 PM roycroft: blotchy
05:02 PM JT-Shop: bolderdash
05:34 PM Tom_L: sometimes you gotta look close to figure between walnut and brown mahogany
05:35 PM Tom_L: walnut usually has a little tighter grain
07:01 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't be able to tell by smell
07:11 PM XXCoder: I wouldnt be able to tell difference between wood and fake plastic lamated pattern by smell
07:32 PM Unterhausen: claro walnut has a rowed grain structure somewhat like mahogany sometimes
07:33 PM Unterhausen: I'm pretty sure I could tell the difference by smell. I can even imagine the smell of walnut, it has been a while with mahogany
07:38 PM Tom_L: my sniffer just isn't what it used to be
09:42 PM roycroft: yeah, this stuff looks a little more like claro walnut than the common black walnut or english walnut
09:42 PM roycroft: but it still looks a lot like mahogany
09:42 PM roycroft: i'll take some pics when i get a chance
10:28 PM roycroft: https://cdn.judge.me/reviews/kjp-wood-products.myshopify.com/products/4-4-rough-cut-peruvian-walnut-lumber
10:33 PM roycroft: we have claro walnut trees growing just a bit south of here, btw
10:33 PM roycroft: about an hour south
