12:29 AM roycroft: oh, i was mistaken
12:43 AM roycroft: tomorrow we'll 3 seconds more daylight than today
12:43 AM roycroft: i thought it was 2 seconds longer
12:43 AM roycroft: that's 50% more than i thought!
01:33 AM Deejay: moin
04:02 AM Tom_L: morning
04:04 AM Tom_L: 42°F & fog High 59°F
04:49 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:50 AM JT-Cave: 52°F Slight Chance Showers High: 62°F
05:42 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> Morning, 14F/36F
06:06 AM JT-Cave: yippie we get 3 more seconds of daylight today
07:19 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
07:52 AM Tom_L: gonna be a great day!
08:29 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> JT: over the hump! 6 months of lengthening days FTW! Hurray! 😄
09:51 AM Unterhausen: I know someone who worked on controls for Cummings
09:52 AM Unterhausen: I told him the good news is the engineers didn't go to jail when vw got caught
10:03 AM Scopeuk: from what I read on that story it was some what cunningly hidden so you needed visibility of the whole system to know what was happening
10:04 AM Scopeuk: the traction control turned off under detection of rolling road. that disable flag triggered a "limp mode" of sorts and the limp mode returned the engine for the defeat
10:04 AM Scopeuk: each step in turn and isolation is innocent and reasonable. only the three together forms the defeat device
10:08 AM Unterhausen: they were doing all that when VW was getting in trouble, so probably that's where they got the idea
10:19 AM Scopeuk: I was thinking VW
10:19 AM Scopeuk: not as familiar with cummings
12:10 PM JT-Shop: wow 65°F and partly sunny
12:16 PM Roguish: good morning. bright and sunny, still mid 50's
12:16 PM Roguish: rain coming Tuesday
12:19 PM Roguish: gonna sneak out for a short ride, then get to straightening up the workbench.
12:19 PM Roguish: in the cold garage shop
12:19 PM JT-Shop: stop by and show me how to straighten up my workbench
01:02 PM roycroft: do you have a powerful leaf blower, jt-shop?
01:02 PM roycroft: that would take care of most of the problem
01:02 PM XXCoder: just lift one end
01:03 PM * roycroft has the heat on in his shop, as he needs to do a glue up today and needs the temperature to approach something reasonable for the glue to dry
01:03 PM roycroft: the leaf blower is more fun
01:03 PM roycroft: and less effort
01:03 PM XXCoder: roy wouldnt you be able to make glue drying cheap trash bag heated enclosure?
01:05 PM XXCoder: using hair drying connected to PID power system
01:05 PM roycroft: sure
01:05 PM roycroft: but i don't have any of that set up
01:05 PM roycroft: the power switch is connected to the heater, though
01:05 PM roycroft: so i flipped that earlier today
01:05 PM * roycroft is dealing with his latest fiasco right now
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/tCwvleBHmrSFWLrLDjNNTTOJ
01:06 PM roycroft: i spent several thousand dollars on hard drives for the country fair's file servers
01:06 PM roycroft: ordering from amazon
01:06 PM JT-Shop: pretty hard to tip those up
01:06 PM roycroft: it was a marketplace purchase
01:06 PM roycroft: the seller claims they have been delivered when they have not
01:06 PM roycroft: they provided a fedex tracking number and proof of delivery
01:06 PM XXCoder: jt lies, you're buff enough ;)
01:07 PM roycroft: and they are correct - a parcel with that tracking number *was* delivered
01:07 PM roycroft: it was shipped from the netherlands and delivered to the uk on august 23 2023
01:07 PM JT-Shop: a scam for sure
01:07 PM roycroft: they refuse to refund because they have proof of delivery
01:07 PM roycroft: yes
01:07 PM roycroft: so amazon are working on it
01:07 PM XXCoder: ugh that sucks
01:08 PM XXCoder: was that table former welding table or what?
01:08 PM roycroft: they have confirmed that not only is it a bogus tracking number, that merchant has a history of providing bogus tracking numbers to amazon customers ad a whole lot of complaints
01:08 PM roycroft: i'll get my refund, no problem, but i don't have the drives i need
01:08 PM roycroft: and i wonder why amazon still allow that merchant to participate in their marketplace, given the history
01:09 PM XXCoder: money
01:12 PM roycroft: you have a fork lift, don't you?
01:12 PM roycroft: if not, i know you have a gantry crane
01:12 PM roycroft: you can lift a corner
01:15 PM XXCoder: besides from being fun day of chatting and eating at red robin yeserday, my sister bought in sauce that was impossible for me to buy any for almost 2 years
01:15 PM XXCoder: sriracha sauce. 2 bottles
01:16 PM XXCoder: finally, the real sauce is here
01:17 PM XXCoder: artisan make makes the new kurling tool since pressure to push in old tool is slowly wearing lathe. then he uses new one off center lol
01:17 PM XXCoder: still a lot less pressure though
01:19 PM roycroft: you know, regarding that bog oak video i linked to yesterday, that log was 97% water
01:19 PM roycroft: and when they slabbed it they just left the slabs outside in the middle of winter in russia
01:20 PM roycroft: seems to me they would freeze, and cause some damage to the wood
01:21 PM XXCoder: I skimmed it some thought they put them on trailer after and left or something
01:22 PM roycroft: oh, i didn't catch that
01:23 PM * roycroft kind of skimmed as well, as the cutting got boring after a while
01:23 PM XXCoder: so they did bring it into trailer?
01:24 PM roycroft: oh, ok, towards the end they dragged some of them inside
01:24 PM roycroft: but at the end of the video there were still some laying outside
01:24 PM roycroft: they probably moved them later
02:50 PM JT-Shop: I've decided to make the steam box from scraps glued up
02:53 PM JT-Shop: unless roycroft tells me it's a bad idea...
02:57 PM XXCoder: was that table former welding table?
02:57 PM XXCoder: because it seems way overkill to hold tools on lol
02:57 PM JT-Shop: no it was a machine at Briggs
02:58 PM JT-Shop: there was a big hole in the middle that I plugged up
02:58 PM XXCoder: ahh ok. interestinbg
02:59 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/DzvdUcRHmXfNXKjNxFoKnTnZ
03:00 PM XXCoder: I see you have some magic erasers ;)
03:00 PM XXCoder: anyway interesting indeed. by shape my wild guess is tablesaw type
03:00 PM XXCoder: though cant be exactly that because its way too wide
03:01 PM JT-Shop: some kind of machining operation I assume, too heavy for the assembly line
03:16 PM JT-Shop: magic eraser?
03:34 PM skunkworks: I would guess peices of nylon..
03:58 PM JT-Shop: that makes sense, I didn't make the connection
03:58 PM JT-Shop: uhmw
04:27 PM XXCoder: lol it does look like magic eraser
04:28 PM CloudEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6Pcp944sRI Purple gold
04:28 PM CloudEvil: Something I've wanted to do in the past
04:29 PM JT-Shop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKBiruRs0Vc
04:38 PM andypugh: CloudEvil: Yeah, I watched that and sent it to my sister “already on it” she said.
04:39 PM JT-Shop: your sister makes jewelry iirc
04:40 PM andypugh: Yes, she is a working jeweler, and has all the kit.
04:56 PM JT-Shop: time to make some jambalaya
06:03 PM roycroft: i watched the purple gold video
06:03 PM roycroft: it was a looooooooong video
06:03 PM roycroft: but a much longer process to get the result
06:04 PM * roycroft got sucked into that video late last night, and went to bed late because of it
06:06 PM XXCoder: it was interesting
06:06 PM XXCoder: I dropped nilered a while ago, watched it because someone suggested it on discord and it looked interesting
06:08 PM roycroft: i found it interesting that the AuAl alloy was so brittle
06:08 PM roycroft: most gold alloys are fairly malleable
06:08 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:10 PM roycroft: rose gold is very attractive, and is a lot easier to make and work than purple gold
06:10 PM roycroft: rose gold is a gold, silver, and copper alloy
06:10 PM XXCoder: i do wonder if puple is from alum oxide
06:11 PM XXCoder: since gold alum alloy sets structure it end up being right thickness to set structural color to peuple-pink
08:57 PM roycroft: finally i got my glue up done
08:57 PM roycroft: i need to hire someone to sand for me
08:57 PM roycroft: i spend entirely too much time sanding
08:58 PM XXCoder: $40 a hour
10:23 PM roycroft: that purple gold video has had 3.4 million views since it was released, a day ago
10:43 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/2lkwld/what_type_of_woodmaterial_would_you_suggest_to/
10:44 PM XXCoder: wow old post
10:51 PM CaptHindsight: what would you do differently 9 years later?
10:51 PM XXCoder: dunno, though wasnt sure what it was reply to :)
10:51 PM CaptHindsight: the outlet is oriented 90 deg from where it should be
10:52 PM CaptHindsight: it's a new old topic
10:52 PM CaptHindsight: are your outlets vertical or horizontal?
10:52 PM CaptHindsight: age of home, location
10:53 PM XXCoder: vertical as in one is over top of another here
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: so wrong, :)
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: this can start fights in the midwest
10:54 PM XXCoder: im out in west so whatever lol
10:54 PM CaptHindsight: around here they are always horizontal
10:58 PM CaptHindsight: hah https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbmRJZGF_RY&t=5s
10:59 PM CaptHindsight: increase your swing (lathe)
11:01 PM Tom_L: both wrong :) should have used a 4 outlet box
11:04 PM CaptHindsight: hah but then you can have them both wrong
11:05 PM Tom_L: half on a switch of course
11:06 PM Tom_L: with the gnd terminal up
11:06 PM CaptHindsight: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-76EdKgGplLc/URn_P575eNI/AAAAAAAAGtg/4kVIyTJjHwA/s640/receptacle+single+duplex.JPG
11:07 PM Tom_L: that way if you use a metal cover and the cover comes loose and falls it doesn't cause a short
11:07 PM Tom_L: those are all wrong :)
11:07 PM Tom_L: ^^ i've actually seen that happe
11:07 PM Tom_L: n
11:08 PM CaptHindsight: you want a short to ground so that the breaker trips vs you getting shocked
11:10 PM Tom_L: i've seen them both ways
11:10 PM Tom_L: most generally they're like the pic
11:11 PM CaptHindsight: there is no rule in the NEC for orientation
11:11 PM Tom_L: i've seen them mounted 'upside down' though for the reason i gave
11:15 PM XXCoder: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/763323422746345472/1188349068741726218/PXL_20231005_221703176.TS.mp4?ex=659a3350&is=6587be50&hm=3066d8e7f4544531f9bfdec97cc0162746c1c980e69b0d756731d151fded4f36&
11:15 PM XXCoder: have fun. related to outlets
11:24 PM CaptHindsight: I am more interested in queer additions to lathes
