07:08 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
07:18 AM solarwind: How do you get your roosters to crow? Only my hens do that.
07:26 AM JT-Cave: I programmed him to crow
07:28 AM solarwind: Ah, that explains it

09:29 AM JT-Cave: if anyone is color blind does this page look ok now? http://linuxcnc.org/
09:40 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> power JUST came back on!!!
10:02 AM JT-Cave: a few days early?
10:03 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> yeah, but right on time, i think. it was getting stressful
10:07 AM roycroft: the days are getting longer
10:07 AM roycroft: it will be summertime before we know it
10:07 AM roycroft: meanwhile it's raining
10:24 AM JT-Shop: wow it's almost lunch time
10:25 AM Tom_L: getting closer
10:27 AM Tom_L: you seem to eat lunch out more than in lately :)
10:29 AM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> better than metal supermarket. idk what they are right now becayuse metal prices have been crazy last 3 years
10:40 AM Roguish: good morning all. dry, krisp and sunny today....
10:54 AM JT-Cave: moist here
11:10 AM lcnc-relay: <_veegee#0> literally EVERYTHING is better than metalsupermarkets, those guys are the worst
01:00 PM lcnc-relay: <unterhausen> What price should I pay for scrap aluminum?
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <unterhausen> they guy who runs the kennel I walk dogs at also has a scrapyard. I just noticed he had some 2" thick by 1 foot square scrap aluminum
01:04 PM roycroft: i'd pay $0.75/lb, but add a $0.90/lb hauling fee
01:07 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
01:57 PM lcnc-relay: <birdscouldbereal> I just returned a borrowed generator, really got to get my natural gas hooked up, I have a 20kw on a trailer that I'm drooling over hooking up
02:01 PM * roycroft is done with work for the holidays
02:11 PM * Tom_L is done for the weekend
02:27 PM roycroft: well, i work next week tuesday-friday
02:27 PM roycroft: but i'm done until tueseday
02:28 PM JT-Shop: ouch just paid my county taxes and the Ridgeline made them go up $300
02:29 PM Tom_L: just wait til you get the one for next year
02:29 PM JT-Shop: yup, I can hardly wait lol
02:36 PM XXCoder: interesting tools in https://youtu.be/r9r5e-ydEW8
02:36 PM XXCoder: like strunker
02:56 PM andypugh: I was with the local Hackspace dudes buying a pillar drill yeterday, from an engineering shop that is closing down.
02:56 PM JT-Shop: garyemiller is happy with the web site now
02:57 PM flyback: veegee BMCC
02:57 PM * flyback hurls ve7it at veegee
02:58 PM andypugh: So, anyway, I noticed that he had a box of keyway broaches, and asked him how much he wanted for them as a job-lot. And he said £100.
02:58 PM andypugh: So I bargained him up to £150
02:59 PM JT-Shop: all metric?
02:59 PM andypugh: And then when we came to load the van he just kept dragging out more.
02:59 PM andypugh: Metric and Imperial.
02:59 PM andypugh: https://photos.app.goo.gl/TQ3jt6VHqdbLNjkU9
02:59 PM JT-Shop: nice
02:59 PM XXCoder: nice
02:59 PM JT-Shop: that's quite a find
03:00 PM JT-Shop: I have a couple of keyway broaches and guides
03:01 PM roycroft: that's probably £5000 worth of broaches
03:01 PM flyback: birdcouldbereal make sure your trailer is well ventilated if you are attaching natural has
03:01 PM flyback: so you don't have a build up and blow up in your face
03:01 PM flyback: that reminds me
03:01 PM andypugh: roycroft: Indeed. There is one of these, for example: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/266257036175
03:02 PM flyback: my church removed a ventless 18.000 ng heater from the pastor's office, I am thinking of telling them to keep some of the money I was going to get doing a computer job
03:02 PM flyback: and I will take that thing
03:02 PM flyback: I have a unused pipe int he bsement when the water heater used to be gas
03:02 PM flyback: that thing willl keep at least part of the house above freezing
03:02 PM flyback: in a outage
03:02 PM flyback: they don't need power
03:03 PM Tom_L: andypugh, you seem to find all the good stuff
03:04 PM flyback: nice
03:04 PM Tom_L: do they have the shims also?
03:04 PM flyback: andypugh, owns your "canuck"
03:04 PM * flyback dropkicks rue_shop3
03:04 PM andypugh: There is a box of shims, probably not a full set for every broach.
03:04 PM Tom_L: i see at least one
03:04 PM Tom_L: right
03:05 PM flyback: heh
03:05 PM flyback: I watch "cutting edge engineering australia" on a regular basis
03:05 PM flyback: even a simple lathe is a licence to print money
03:05 PM flyback: that is neat shit
03:06 PM andypugh: So do I. In fact my next video that I am working on is going to be aimed at him, because he doesn’t seem to know about DeVlieg Microbore inserts.
03:06 PM andypugh: (And I just finished making a broach for mounting them)
03:08 PM Tom_L: you're gonna run out of room soon
03:08 PM flyback: heh
03:08 PM flyback: that must be a hell of a science
03:08 PM flyback: "inserts"
03:08 PM flyback: all the material they are made out of and their design
03:10 PM flyback: you gotta balance hardness against brittleness, against smoothness of the cut etc
03:10 PM bjorkintosh: flyback, metallurgy for starters.
03:10 PM flyback: yep
03:10 PM bjorkintosh: tool steel.
03:11 PM andypugh: This is a different meaning of “insert”, they look like this. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314997369159
03:13 PM andypugh: For line boring (and production boring) you turn the ring to move the tip out by a calibrated amount. And they fit in a hole bored in the boring bar.
03:14 PM flyback: yeah I know they are the cutting surfscr
03:16 PM flyback: it's all a balance
03:16 PM flyback: tool life vs smoothness of cut, vs all kinds of shit
03:17 PM andypugh: There is a really clever tweak, the ring is graduated 0-50 for 50 thou (20 tpi thread) (there is a metric version too). But you can also get rings marked 0-40 for the exact same thread, for inserts set at an angle for boring up to shoulders. (It needs to be a very specific angle to make that work, 36.87 degrees, I think)
03:17 PM flyback: obviously you want the longest life you can out of the tool but if it has a tendency to tear up very rare and expensive special alloys, you might want to use a less durable insert when cutting those alloys
03:17 PM flyback: you know what I mean
03:24 PM flyback: "modern marvels machine tools" is still my favorite episode of all time
03:27 PM flyback: even the early hand cranked or waterwheel or steam machines
03:27 PM flyback: "wait 2 parts that are the same? wtf?"
03:28 PM flyback: aanyways driving time for the family get together so bbl
03:29 PM flyback: rue_shop3, clever, veeegee, BMCC, as always
04:16 PM * roycroft is trying to enjoy his time off, but has been on the phone with his health insurance company for an hour now, and the conversation has become circular
05:50 PM roycroft: 2 1/2 hours into the phone call i was informed that i never disputed any claims, in spite of my having sent them copies of the disputes, so i've filed a complaint with the state insurance commissioner's office
06:07 PM Tom_L: does thunderbird email allow for rules?
07:54 PM roycroft: rules like filters?
07:54 PM roycroft: if so, i'm almost positive it does
07:58 PM Tom_L: https://www.syscurve.com/blog/how-to-create-rules-in-thunderbird.html
07:58 PM Tom_L: found that
08:03 PM roycroft: most of our customers on macs use mac mail or postbox
08:03 PM roycroft: i don't do customer support for the windows folks, but i know we recommend thunderbird
08:04 PM roycroft: anything to get away from the microsoft products
08:04 PM roycroft: and we try to train our customers to use message filters
08:04 PM roycroft: maybe some day i'll get my boss trained to use message filters :)
08:13 PM Tom_L: i had filters set up on the previous client but just started using thunderbird out of necessity
08:13 PM Tom_L: but never looked into setting filters up
08:16 PM flyback: Tom_L, im pretty sure thunderbird also does support filters
08:16 PM flyback: I think it even does plugins for av scans etc
08:17 PM flyback: man I suffed a 9 hr bowel blockage "attack" this morning, worst in decades, just swapping from trying to lie down on the bed, to running to the bathroom again as stuff slowly cleared out. ALso chills and gut punch feeling, real fun, now I am scared to go to bed
08:17 PM flyback: heh
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Sure it isn't the flu?
08:26 PM Tom_L: doesn't seem to move them once they're in the inbox
08:27 PM Tom_L: ahh there we go
08:31 PM roycroft: with most mail clients the filters are applied as the mail is being delivered
08:31 PM roycroft: so if it matches a filter it never lands in the inbox to begin with
08:31 PM Tom_L: right
08:32 PM Tom_L: but you can select the inbox for exhisting ones which i just did
08:32 PM * roycroft uses procmail on the mail server for that, but knows most folks don't have that kind of access to their mail server
08:35 PM flyback: skunkworks yeah had this for 20 yrs
08:37 PM flyback: <flyback> skunkworks yeah had this for 20 yrs
08:39 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnlMX9FxvN0
08:40 PM roycroft: they're slabbing a giant bog oak log
08:40 PM roycroft: those slabs are probably worth $15k-$20k eash
08:40 PM roycroft: each
08:40 PM roycroft: that log has been buried underwater for 5000 years
08:40 PM flyback: ooooooooooooooo
08:40 PM flyback: those
08:41 PM flyback: those are worth $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
08:41 PM flyback: like that one short lived reality tv show about logging in the swamps
08:41 PM flyback: one time they found a bunch of those
08:41 PM roycroft: yeah
08:41 PM roycroft: actually the show ran for a long time
08:41 PM flyback: and they were like 10x what they normally get per board or something
08:41 PM Tom_L: swamp loggers
08:41 PM roycroft: but the swamp loggers only lasted a couple seasons
08:41 PM roycroft: and those logs weren't very old
08:41 PM Tom_L: had some decent feuds
08:41 PM roycroft: only 100 years or so
08:42 PM roycroft: it's the ones in europe that are truly ancient
08:42 PM flyback: 100 yrs is still $$$$
08:42 PM roycroft: yeah
08:42 PM Tom_L: where was ^^ that one found?
08:42 PM roycroft: i don't know, but they sound like they're from eastern europe
08:42 PM flyback: people pay $$$ for bizare things
08:42 PM flyback: I know there was this guy
08:42 PM flyback: ont v
08:43 PM roycroft: i got a marking knife from matt estlea a couple of years ago whose handle is made of english bog oak
08:43 PM flyback: every time a demolition company brought down a old building they would notify him and they worked out some kinda deal
08:43 PM flyback: he would go thru these old buildings and hand pick out all the old hinges etc
08:43 PM flyback: $$$$ on ebay
08:43 PM roycroft: the color on that log they're slabbing is amazing
08:43 PM roycroft: and i can't believe they used a chainsaw mill to slab it
08:43 PM flyback: I mean look at old foods
08:43 PM flyback: wine
08:43 PM flyback: cheese
08:43 PM flyback: aged meat
08:44 PM flyback: people pay $$$
08:44 PM roycroft: that wood is so precious it should be milled with a bandsaw, with the thinnest blade possible
08:44 PM Tom_L: me feels roycroft would be in heaven with something like that
08:44 PM flyback: probably
08:44 PM roycroft: oh, yeah
08:44 PM roycroft: i would love a log like that
08:44 PM flyback: dad really lovd his xmas hift
08:44 PM flyback: gift
08:44 PM * flyback owns your "canuck"
08:44 PM roycroft: a big bog oak log is better than retirement grease!
08:44 PM * flyback tazers rue_shop3
08:44 PM flyback: I got him a ifixit $20 screwdriver set
08:45 PM flyback: yeah I imagine with super old logs
08:45 PM flyback: you can even sell the "scrap" to be used in something
08:45 PM flyback: doorknob etc
08:45 PM roycroft: but if i had a log like that i'd have to slab it with a chain saw mill too, because i don't have a big bandsaw mill
08:45 PM roycroft: although if i had a log like that one slab would pay for a bandsaw mill
08:45 PM flyback: heh probably
08:46 PM flyback: have you seen the guy that does epoxy tables
08:46 PM roycroft: so maybe i'd build the mill, putting the materials on a credit card, and sell one slab to pay off the cc
08:46 PM flyback: he doesn't use wood that old but sometimes does use unique pieces of wood
08:46 PM Tom_L: wonder what kind of tree it is
08:46 PM roycroft: it's oak
08:46 PM Tom_L: straight as an arrow
08:46 PM Tom_L: ahh
08:46 PM roycroft: i don't know what species
08:46 PM roycroft: are you talking about cam, from portland, flyback?
08:46 PM flyback: I think so
08:46 PM flyback: blackwood studios or osmething
08:46 PM roycroft: i can't stand him as a person
08:46 PM roycroft: yeah
08:47 PM roycroft: and i hate the look of most of his products
08:47 PM roycroft: but he has some really good techniques
08:47 PM roycroft: so i watch his videos for taht
08:47 PM flyback: I thought the torched log table was cool
08:47 PM flyback: he didn't think it was worth anything
08:47 PM flyback: but people offered $$$
08:47 PM roycroft: yes, that was one of his better products
08:48 PM roycroft: i just don't like the whole epoxy furniture movement
08:48 PM roycroft: i mean, i use epoxy all the time
08:48 PM flyback: I don't think it's bad
08:48 PM roycroft: it's good for filling cracks and the like
08:48 PM roycroft: and it's a good adhesive
08:48 PM flyback: its' not like it's ikea and just stamped together
08:48 PM flyback: he's basically ambering pieces of old wood
08:48 PM roycroft: but as a design element i really don't like it
08:49 PM flyback: you guys have a talent working this stuff
08:49 PM flyback: I don't care if you have the $50 harbor frieght mill, it's still damn useful
08:49 PM flyback: you can spit out even small widgets people can use
08:50 PM roycroft: check out black forest wood co. on youtube
08:50 PM roycroft: they're another epoxy furniture shop, but their stuff is a lot nicer than cam's, imo
08:50 PM roycroft: and even more expensive
08:50 PM roycroft: well, maybe
08:50 PM roycroft: the numbers sound higher
08:50 PM flyback: that shit he was dealing with is scary
08:50 PM flyback: trapped moisture
08:50 PM roycroft: but they're from calgary, so it's funny money
08:50 PM flyback: STUPID CANUCKS
08:50 PM flyback: STUPID CANUCKS
08:50 PM flyback: :P
08:51 PM roycroft: $25,000 CAD is like $1200 real dollars :)
08:51 PM * roycroft exaggerates because it's fun, and because BLAME CANADA!
08:51 PM roycroft: but seriously, they are much better designers than cam, even though they use about 1000x too much epoxy in their products
08:51 PM flyback: I couldn't do it
08:52 PM flyback: I would end up gluging my dick to the table or something horrible
08:52 PM roycroft: anyway, it's time to start making pizza
08:52 PM flyback: cool
08:52 PM flyback: that's also a artform
08:53 PM roycroft: i got some chantrelle mushrooms for tonight's pizza
08:53 PM flyback: OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
08:53 PM flyback: mushrooms own your "canuck"
08:53 PM roycroft: it's the holiday season, so why not splurge and put $30 worth of mushrooms on a pizza?
08:53 PM * flyback tazers rue_shop3 again
08:53 PM flyback: hey im cool with that
08:53 PM flyback: that makes more sense than gold leaf
08:53 PM flyback: that is so stupid
08:53 PM flyback: I agree with ramsey on that
08:53 PM roycroft: well
08:54 PM roycroft: it's not as expensive as you would think
08:54 PM flyback: yeah I know cause it's so thin
08:54 PM flyback: but I rather take those cents
08:54 PM roycroft: especially if it's not 24 karat, which is not even remotely necessary for food
08:54 PM flyback: and get some exotic shrooms or osmething
08:54 PM roycroft: and on the right food, a bit of gold leaf can make it look really good
08:54 PM roycroft: i personally have never used it on food
08:55 PM flyback: that one pizza ramsey made was really good, I don't doubt he couldn't charge $100/slice
08:55 PM flyback: using those mushrooms he climed down 250 feet to get
08:55 PM roycroft: i'm going to sautee the chantrelles in a bit of olive oil until they're nicely browned, then add some white wine for them to soak up before they go on the pizza
08:56 PM flyback: truffles are something I would like to try someday if they weren't so damn expensive
08:56 PM flyback: they are kinda insteresting fungus
08:56 PM roycroft: and while i always use fresh basil on my pizzas, i'll be adding some fresh rosemary as well to this one
08:56 PM flyback: they are pigs, they will eat a lot of the host tree sugar
08:56 PM roycroft: i use truffle oil upon occasion, but i've never cooked with truffles
08:56 PM flyback: but they produce chemicals that dissolve rock into minerals for the tree and make the roots hold more water
08:56 PM roycroft: i'd like to
08:56 PM flyback: so they tree is healthyer anyways
08:56 PM roycroft: maybe if a big bag of money falls out of the sky and lands at my feet
09:13 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:19 PM XXCoder: roycroft: interesting video
09:19 PM XXCoder: chips looked very black
09:22 PM roycroft: yes, bogwood is usually very black
09:22 PM roycroft: the only piece of bogwood that i have is that marking knife, and it is beautiful
09:22 PM roycroft: i opted for the bronze ferrule for it
09:23 PM XXCoder: it gets bit lighter when slabbing, but yeah amazing
09:23 PM roycroft: and it's really a striking look
09:23 PM XXCoder: and very costly I guess
09:25 PM roycroft: https://mattestlea.com/product/ebony-steel-marking-knife-b-stock/
09:25 PM roycroft: that's what it looks like except mine is a-grade, not b-grade, and the ferrule is bronze, not steel
09:25 PM XXCoder: dang
09:25 PM roycroft: iirc it was about $100 plus shipping
09:26 PM roycroft: it looks amazing, is very comfortable to use, and i really like the disposable blades
09:26 PM roycroft: i wasn't sure i would, but i do use surgeon's scalpels all the time as well
09:26 PM roycroft: and they're great
09:29 PM XXCoder: nice
09:54 PM roycroft: tonight is festivus eve
09:55 PM roycroft: i should go find an aluminium pole to erect, prepare a list of grievances, and train for the feats of strength
09:56 PM XXCoder: lol
09:57 PM XXCoder: good inheirance video today!
09:59 PM * roycroft is watching star trek, having just pulled the pizza out of the oven
10:00 PM XXCoder: went to red robin with my sister nephews and one of nephew friend
10:00 PM XXCoder: was fun
10:02 PM roycroft: i haven't eaten at a red robin in ages
10:03 PM XXCoder: its one of very few places one of nephews would eat at besides from mcdonalds
10:03 PM XXCoder: autistic
10:05 PM roycroft: it's an ok place
10:05 PM XXCoder: yeah
10:06 PM solarwind: Spot drill included angle should be larger than drill bit angle right?
10:07 PM solarwind: Almost all my drill bits are 135° split point, so I need a > 135° spot drill yeah?
10:08 PM Tom_L: you want the point to touch first yes
10:08 PM solarwind: I can't seem to find any spot drills in the usual places with a large angle. They just stock 60°, 90°, 120°
10:09 PM Tom_L: https://www.harveyperformance.com/in-the-loupe/choosing-spot-drill/
10:11 PM solarwind: Yeah, I know I need > 135°. I just can't find them anywhere
10:11 PM Tom_L: have an old carbide endmill ground
10:11 PM Tom_L: i did
10:11 PM Tom_L: but for a different purpose
10:12 PM solarwind: Yeah I guess I can just grind my own after I pick up my tool and cutter grinder
10:13 PM Tom_L: we've got lots of local grind shops here
10:13 PM Tom_L: i called one day and picked it up same day
10:16 PM solarwind: I wonder if these count: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006332506345.html
10:29 PM Tom_L: what diameter?
10:29 PM Tom_L: you generally want a larger diameter spot so they are much less likely to wander
10:30 PM Tom_L: the one you linked shows 4mm which imo is a bit small for a spot
10:33 PM Tom_L: to be honest, i don't know many shops that really adhere to that angle thing
10:33 PM Tom_L: it may be best in theory
10:36 PM Tom_L: http://onlinecarbide.com/spotdrills1.html
10:40 PM roycroft: i think most people use center drills as spot drills
10:42 PM Tom_L: maybe on a lathe
10:42 PM Tom_L: i have both and use spots on the mill
10:43 PM roycroft: i have both as well
10:43 PM roycroft: and i use center drills on the lathe and spot drills on the mill
10:43 PM roycroft: but a lot of weekend warriors just get center drills from harbor freight (who don't carry spot drills) and use them for both
10:48 PM Tom_L: scanning some old pics: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/60Deg_3Flute_3500R_F30_Finish.jpg
10:48 PM Tom_L: pretty good cut for a homebuilt mill
10:50 PM Connor: I use both. I'll use a center drill to dimple for drilling.. I'll go down to the center if I know I'm going to tap so it makes a chamfer for me.
10:50 PM Tom_L: that was actually the wrong cutter for aluminum too
10:51 PM Tom_L: Connor, what came of your homing issue?
10:51 PM Tom_L: or soft limit...
10:52 PM Connor: Dunno yet. Not been back to the Maker Space I'll check it out tomorrow.
10:52 PM Tom_L: oh
10:52 PM Connor: I'm thinking if I just set the joint limit a few .001 more than the axis limit, it'll be fine.
10:52 PM Connor: Might be a issue with joint mode..
