12:41 AM roycroft: and the rain has just returned
12:53 AM XXCoder: same here. no more fog
12:53 AM roycroft: the temperature over night will be higher than during the day today
12:53 AM roycroft: and yeah, there will be no more fog for a while
12:53 AM roycroft: we'll have our typical wet christmas again this year
01:45 AM Deejay: moin
04:44 AM Tom_L: morning

04:49 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> good morninh
04:49 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> morning*
04:49 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> Hello, Tom_L, i have installed the bridge 🙂 hope it doesn't break too much
04:50 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> devel room is now on discord too 😄
04:52 AM Tom_L: seems ok as long as it stays a dev channel :)
05:01 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> been on standby generator since noon yesterday... i hope my propane gas holds out...
05:35 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:40 AM CaptHindsight: solarwind: beware of HSS marketers dressed in sheeps clothing
07:09 AM JT-Cave: 20°F Sunny High: 44°F
07:10 AM JT-Cave: doesn't take me long to look at the coops when it's this cold
08:02 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:36 AM skunkworks: morning
08:37 AM Tom_L: hi
08:42 AM skunkworks: 20F here too
08:48 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:49 AM solarwind: 20° here too
08:53 AM * JT-Shop gets some fires started
08:53 AM solarwind: hen just crowed
08:57 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/PthbgAfSpPLFLJDsmoklNxCo
08:57 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> generator propane tanks, after running almost 24 hours... a little bit frosty...
08:58 AM skunkworks: you have been out of power for 24 hours?
08:58 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> just about
08:59 AM skunkworks: yikes
08:59 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> big storm hit, most of town is flooded
08:59 AM skunkworks: parents were out of power for about a day last winter. (ice/snow storm)
09:00 AM skunkworks: I really need to get the generator hooked in there..
09:00 AM skunkworks: or a tesla wall... lol
09:00 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> i really like this 15KW generac. seems pretty reliable
09:01 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> *knock on wood...
09:01 AM solarwind: I really need to get a power inverter for my forklift batteries
09:01 AM solarwind: Have like 80kWh just sitting here unused most of the time..
09:01 AM CloudEvil: What volts?
09:02 AM solarwind: 36
09:02 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> mine? 240
09:02 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> oh...
09:02 AM CloudEvil: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003612473360.html there is stuff like this
09:02 AM CloudEvil: at one end of the 'cheap' options.
09:02 AM solarwind: CloudEvil the problem is, my industrial unit is 600V 3 phase. So I need at least 240V 3 phase
09:03 AM CloudEvil: ah, 3 phase si a bit more spendy. And 36V stuff is uncommon
09:03 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> ouch
09:03 AM solarwind: I can convert to 48V, the forklifts have room for 48V packs
09:03 AM JT-Shop: I've heard a hen crowing before as well as a rooster singing the egg song
09:03 AM solarwind: The reach lift is getting a 48V conversion soon anyway as soon as the LiFePO4 cells arrive
09:04 AM solarwind: that'll add another 20kWh at 48V
09:05 AM solarwind: I was working on a low voltage, non-isolated buck converter design to drop 48V -> 36V at 600A
09:05 AM JT-Shop: I added a battery maintainer to my generator, last time the power was out the batteries were dead
09:05 AM solarwind: which is a lot easier to do than 48V -> 900V at 50A. HIgh ratios are very hard
09:05 AM CloudEvil: solarwind: yeah, that sort of stuff is fun, I have doodles of about that thing
09:05 AM CloudEvil: solarwind: TI has some nice appnotes
09:06 AM solarwind: low ratios, you can just parallel or do like 20 phases lol]
09:06 AM solarwind: and you can get insanely high efficiencies like > 95%
09:06 AM CloudEvil: https://www.ti.com/document-viewer/lit/html/TIDT249#GUID-D5A92C37-A703-49B2-9354-81B1B48CC925/GUID-E9E77821-5A2F-4712-81C0-8B07141574C4
09:07 AM CloudEvil: Annoyingly they tend to often not give proper construction details on the transformers and special inductors byt sometimes it's there
09:08 AM CloudEvil: https://www.ti.com/reference-designs/index.html#search?keyword=inverter and then search by watts
09:10 AM skunkworks: we have a Kohler 7kw 240v generator from like the 70's - and a newer no name brand - about the same kw generator..
09:10 AM skunkworks: I see dad has a box mounted with a bunch of switch gear.. Going to have to dig into it..
09:11 AM skunkworks: The house was re-wired to run off the 3 phase from the polebuilding.. Planning on having the generators down there..
09:12 AM skunkworks: (mainly then that would also run the starlink easy enough..)
09:21 AM skunkworks: LOL - don't know exactly how the house is run from the polebuiding.. Going to have to look into that.
09:22 AM skunkworks: Also - there are 2 heavy wires in a box that have a pig tail plugged into a wall outlet... Need to figure that one out also..
09:22 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> sounds scary...
09:23 AM skunkworks: eh.. Some time you just have to 'get it done' fix it later.. ;)
09:23 AM skunkworks: I am assuming it is maybe for an outside outlet that is across the driveway..
09:23 AM skunkworks: easy enough to test - just haven't yet.
10:19 AM roycroft: tesla walls are fancy-shmancy old school stuff
10:19 AM roycroft: rocks are the new tesla walls
10:30 AM bjorkintosh: what's next, hard rock?
10:30 AM bjorkintosh: followed by metal?
10:30 AM bjorkintosh: :-)
10:30 AM bjorkintosh: then heavy metal ... wait! I know how this ends.
10:31 AM bjorkintosh: it ends in Norwegian Death Metal!!! (:skullEmoji:)
10:36 AM roycroft: rocks are being used to store energy so that pv arrays can power factories and other businesses that need power 24/7
10:37 AM roycroft: the pv arrays store excess power by heating up the rocks, and when the sun goes down the heat from the rocks is used to generate power
10:37 AM roycroft: it's a lot cheaper than using lithium-based batteries
10:39 AM roycroft: another cheap way of storing excess pv-generated power is to pump water up into a reservoir during the day, and letting it flow back down at night, generating hydro power
10:39 AM roycroft: water also being cheaper than lithium
10:39 AM bjorkintosh: yeah I know what you mean. entropy is the enemy in all temperature based storage systems.
10:39 AM roycroft: the beauty is that they don't have to be very efficient if they are cheap enough
10:40 AM bjorkintosh: spain used those molten salt systems for a while there. it was an even worse issue.
10:40 AM bjorkintosh: the salt they were using is pretty corrosive.
10:41 AM bjorkintosh: and the heliostats were also killing birds left and right. or was that Ivanpah?
10:45 AM JT-Shop: works great until the dam fails https://damfailures.org/case-study/taum-sauk-dam-missouri-2005/
10:46 AM bjorkintosh: Before it reached the river and flowed into the Lower Reservoir where it was entirely contained
10:46 AM bjorkintosh: that's smart.
10:46 AM bjorkintosh: but it sounds like a structural failure, which could have been mitigated.
10:47 AM bjorkintosh: perhaps a fault in the foundation?
10:57 AM mrec: can anyone recommend a fast 400w servo motor? (possibly 110v, however 220 is also okay just need a transformer then)
10:58 AM mrec: I was thinking something like Delta or Leadshine EL6
11:07 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DG2etKxmjQ
12:38 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> lol yeah, they call them collets
12:39 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> im my search, the only thing you can find short are some of the small series jackobs chucks, and rohm/albreich chucks for a keyless chuck
02:24 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/CPBvltUNhPzQUikKxfkEbVKl
02:26 PM Tom_L: what is it?
02:33 PM JT-Shop: steam box base, adapts the box to the turkey fryer
02:34 PM bjorkintosh: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/KSKntv3-ic4
02:36 PM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
02:37 PM JT-Shop: the steam box fits over the 4 dowels that are not there yet
02:42 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> just fired up the second pair of 100 pound propane tanks for my generator...
02:45 PM JT-Shop: you still without power?
02:48 PM Roguish: check this one out https://www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/fagradalsfjall
02:49 PM JT-Shop: iceland will melt now?
02:50 PM Roguish: maybe
02:51 PM roycroft: that volcano is out on a peninsula between reykjavik and keflavik
02:59 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> yup, still without power
03:00 PM JT-Shop: how long does a 100 pound tank last?
03:01 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> apparently about a day and a half, roughly
03:01 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> for two
03:02 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> they are in parallel
03:02 PM JT-Shop: what is your heat source?
03:03 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> 100K BTU oil furnace
03:04 PM JT-Shop: that's good, electric would be bad
03:04 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> yeah, particularly with just a 15KW gen
03:11 PM roycroft: you can always go carve some logs on your cnc router and toss them in the fireplace
03:16 PM XXCoder: or hmm whats it called again? bungress pressing the chips?
03:19 PM XXCoder: ah yes biquette
03:20 PM * roycroft is getting bored
03:20 PM roycroft: this dh key has been generating for about 15 minutes now
03:20 PM XXCoder: just found this. https://youtu.be/2H6L8Pn9VfM charcoal version
03:20 PM roycroft: watching the dot scroll across the screen is about as exciting as watching grass grow or watching paint dry
03:23 PM XXCoder: found what I wanted to link to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ri62uzLoss
03:24 PM XXCoder: wood chips and dust into briquette pressed rods
03:24 PM XXCoder: less fancy one https://woodgears.ca/reader/alois/press.html
04:27 PM Unterhausen: Thanks for reminding me I need to check my dust collector to see if the barrel is full.
04:27 PM Unterhausen: someday I'll get the full barrel indicator light working
04:29 PM JT-Shop: I learned my lesson to check the bag before I start filling it
04:33 PM CaptHindsight: of you fill your shop with Knick-Knacks does it cut down on the dust?
04:42 PM JT-Shop: it creates more dust and dust bunnies
04:44 PM roycroft: i've read mixed reviews of those barrel full indicator setups
04:44 PM roycroft: some folks love them
04:45 PM roycroft: others say that fine dust renders them useless
04:45 PM JT-Shop: my bag full indicator is on my hand
04:45 PM roycroft: i have a pre-separator on my dust collector
04:45 PM roycroft: when the barrel fills up the chips/dust just flow into the lower bag on the main unit
04:46 PM roycroft: which defeats the purpose of having the pre-separator, so i check my barrel frequently
04:46 PM JT-Shop: ultra sonic level detectors work well, I've installed a few of them on wood chip silos
04:46 PM roycroft: they act like sonar devices?
04:46 PM JT-Shop: yup
04:46 PM roycroft: pinging your chips?
04:47 PM JT-Shop: single ping please
04:47 PM roycroft: that seems more reliable than the optical sensors
04:47 PM JT-Shop: optical and dust don't work
04:47 PM roycroft: so many folks say
04:49 PM JT-Shop: I only use lasers in clean environments
04:51 PM JT-Shop: I built a machine for Briggs at the run tunnel and they wanted a camera... I did it but it didn't work because the operators used markers and spray cleaners to remove the marks
04:57 PM * roycroft routed out the "mistake" in his book press base at lunch today, and is going to go fit a filler piece in a couple minutes
04:58 PM roycroft: this would be trivial to do with the shaper origin, except i don't have a cutter with a deep enough depth of cut with an 8mm or 1/4" shank
04:59 PM roycroft: so i'll be using the old-fashioned method of hand fitting
05:02 PM JT-Shop: I built a bike stand today but it needs to be a bit taller and wider
05:08 PM t4nk_freenode is now known as t4nk_fn
05:12 PM JT-Shop: Righteous Felon Habanero Excobar jerky is pretty good
05:15 PM JT-Shop: Escobar
05:26 PM Tom_L: different flavor today
05:26 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:26 PM JT-Shop: I got 12 flavors
05:39 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
05:39 PM Unterhausen: my dust collector uses an actual barrel, so it's not easy to tell how full it is
05:40 PM Unterhausen: I really should just give up and use the window/light in the barrel system
05:40 PM JT-Shop: mine has a bag so easy to check
05:49 PM Tom_L: stand for the honda?
05:50 PM JT-Shop: mountain bike
05:51 PM Tom_L: i just figured since you'd been working on the honda...
05:51 PM JT-Shop: oh you meant the bluewing?
05:51 PM Tom_L: yeah
05:51 PM JT-Shop: gotta remember I have 3 honda's
05:52 PM Tom_L: i'm down to 1 now
05:53 PM roycroft: whoah - 45 was just disqualified from running by the colorado supreme court
05:53 PM * roycroft doesn't think he agrees with that
05:55 PM JT-Shop: night
05:55 PM roycroft: all too soon, alas
05:55 PM roycroft: but longest night is just a couple days hence, and then we'll have more sunshine!
06:01 PM jackc: anyone happen to know... mesa 7i29 datasheet notes 'max 165 vdc' in the summary, but also mentions 'made to accept rectified + filtered 120vac' (paraphrasing)...
06:02 PM jackc: as one might expect, at no load i get 175vdc out of a rect-->cap from my exactly-120vac rms line. that
06:02 PM jackc: 's too close to the breakdown max of 180vdc, right? not safe unless i do something silly with a brake resistor and mosfet and opamp and zener combo to prevent 176vdc+?
06:04 PM jackc: (fwiw, if anyone has suggestions- my servos are fine with anywhere from 120vdc to 180vdc, prolly need about 30A max (theoretial all axis instantaneous current sum is 60A)
06:04 PM jackc: )
06:05 PM jackc: i was until very recently using 8000mah LiPos as a temperary solution, but alas, i did not monitor their voltage and they got very hot and angry yesterday
06:06 PM jackc: QED time for something at least 3dB more proper...
06:55 PM XXCoder: andypugh: nice work on chuck. I always hated on how long those are
06:56 PM andypugh: I missed out a subtitle, here is is:
06:56 PM andypugh: 34
06:56 PM andypugh: 00:14:19,00 --> 00:14:25,0
06:56 PM andypugh: The "Jacobs" style chuck is better in this regard than
06:56 PM andypugh: the "Albrecht" style...
06:57 PM XXCoder: thanks :)
07:00 PM XXCoder: chamfers make world less edgy
07:00 PM andypugh: Quinn Dunki always says :chanfers are what separate us from the animals” :-_
07:01 PM XXCoder: yep
07:01 PM roycroft: indeed
07:01 PM roycroft: and she is absolutely correct
07:09 PM TurboTechnique: Hi. In the AXIS interface, where is the default jog speed set?
07:10 PM Tom_L: in the ini
07:10 PM TurboTechnique: It defaults to 55mm/min on my set up, which is very slow
07:10 PM TurboTechnique: but grepping for 55 in any of the files does not find anything
07:11 PM Tom_L: iirc it's in the [DISPLAY] section but check the docs for sure
07:11 PM TurboTechnique: DEFAULT_LINEAR_VELOCITY sound right?
07:11 PM Tom_L: DEFAULT_LINEAR_VELOCITY
07:11 PM Tom_L: yes
07:11 PM TurboTechnique: great
07:12 PM TurboTechnique: in what unit is the velocity in the ini anyway?
07:12 PM Tom_L: and there's also a setting for override
07:12 PM Tom_L: on yours it's metric right?
07:12 PM TurboTechnique: how does it translate a value of 1.0 to 55
07:12 PM TurboTechnique: yes, metric
07:12 PM Tom_L: DEFAULT_LINEAR_VELOCITY = .25 - The default velocity for linear jogs, in machine units per second.
07:12 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/config/ini-config.html#sub:ini:sec:display
07:13 PM TurboTechnique: machine units eh
07:13 PM TurboTechnique: oh, per second
07:13 PM TurboTechnique: I see
07:13 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> per second
07:14 PM TurboTechnique: also, does the system somewhere keep count of how many times I've pressed start since I loaded the G code file?
07:14 PM Tom_L: not that i'm aware of
07:14 PM TurboTechnique: is there a variable I can bring up that tells me how many times I've machined the part during the session
07:15 PM TurboTechnique: ok
07:15 PM Tom_L: you can make one
07:15 PM Tom_L: write out to a var with a subroutine or something
07:15 PM TurboTechnique: yeah of course
07:29 PM XXCoder: andy video was fun
07:34 PM Tom_L: yeah
07:37 PM Tom_L: TurboTechnique, MAX_FEED_OVERRIDE = 1.2 - The maximum feed override the user may select. 1.2 means 120% of the programmed feed rate.
07:38 PM Tom_L: controls the override slider
09:27 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRReL-tpHNA
09:27 PM XXCoder: pretty cool
10:33 PM roycroft: some folks are building a boat, making their templates with a shaper origin
10:33 PM roycroft: if there's a global shortage of shaper tape, this is why:
10:33 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFritFv9udo
10:34 PM roycroft: look in at about 12:15
10:34 PM roycroft: the ones in the background were all cut with the origin
10:39 PM Tom_L: i'm sure there's plenty of tape to go around
10:40 PM XXCoder: lol
10:40 PM XXCoder: I bet its vastly cheaper than buying one
10:40 PM Tom_L: offices don't run out of scotch tape at xmas time do they?
10:40 PM Tom_L: tape volume increases then i'm sure
10:42 PM Tom_L: 3M just smiles a bit more
10:47 PM roycroft: $0.15/foot
10:48 PM roycroft: probably about a full 150' roll per template
10:48 PM roycroft: and there are 22 templates
10:49 PM roycroft: so that's a lot of shaper tape
10:49 PM roycroft: i had read that those templates were off by 1mm end to end, which is pretty damn accurate
10:50 PM XXCoder: 1mm is plenty for large boat
10:55 PM roycroft: i'd not seen that w&m levsha channel before
10:55 PM roycroft: it's kind of interesting
10:55 PM XXCoder: yeah. he rarely posts a video but basically all good
10:56 PM roycroft: i'll be sure to check out some of his other videos
10:57 PM XXCoder: be sure to check oit lighter prank" and the dice spinner
10:59 PM roycroft: i'll watch one of them on my tv, which has no privacy settings
10:59 PM roycroft: so it will remind me of that channel every time i start up the youtube app
10:59 PM XXCoder: lol ok
11:00 PM * roycroft would forget otherwise
11:00 PM XXCoder: I use rss feed to get new videos from specific channels. recommandations suck
11:00 PM Tom_L: maybe they get a bulk discount on tape
11:03 PM roycroft: the cost of the tape is probably incosequential in the budget of building that boat
11:03 PM XXCoder: yeah at end boat is very expensive
11:03 PM XXCoder: even when buold your own
