05:14 AM JT-Cave: 38°F Sunny High: 44°F
05:37 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> morning
05:37 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> 55F/56F with lots of rain and some thunder
07:06 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
07:33 AM Helium: Afternoon'
08:01 AM bjorkintosh: solarwind, 100 years for science? i'd say closer to 150 years or so.
08:01 AM bjorkintosh: *modern science.
08:44 AM JT-Cave: some jackass keeps closing my questions on stack exchange...
08:57 AM JT-Cave: wow it only took 30 minutes for some jackass to edit my new question then close it
08:58 AM JT-Cave: Wait! Some of your past questions have not been well-received, and you're in danger of being blocked from asking any more.
09:02 AM bjorkintosh: Unfortunately s.o. is notorious for that idiocy.
09:04 AM JT-Cave: and that sucks because they seem to have the best source of info
09:04 AM bjorkintosh: exactly why so many people are rushing to the GPTs
09:04 AM bjorkintosh: it's judgement free, if often wrong.
09:16 AM JT-Cave: GPT?
09:17 AM JT-Cave: so now if I ask another question and it gets closed I might be banned LOL
09:18 AM JT-Cave: We do not recommend deleting questions with answers because doing so deprives future readers of this knowledge. See "I've thought better of my question; can I delete it?" for alternatives to deletion.
09:18 AM JT-Cave: Repeated deletion of answered questions can result in your account being blocked from asking. Are you sure you wish to delete?
09:19 AM JT-Cave: You have already deleted 5 of your own posts today; further deletes are blocked. See "I've thought better of my question; can I delete it?" for alternatives.
09:36 AM JT-Shop: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1363036914599911
09:39 AM bjorkintosh: JT-Cave, ChatGPT and its ilk.
09:39 AM bjorkintosh: it helps a little bit.
09:40 AM JT-Cave: never heard of that...
09:40 AM bjorkintosh: openai?
09:40 AM bjorkintosh: surely. https://chat.openai.com/
09:40 AM bjorkintosh: It's not always right, but it gets me close enough to what I need.
09:40 AM JT-Cave: sign up... nope lol
09:41 AM bjorkintosh: it's written primarily python so it knows a hell of a lot about pythonic things.
09:42 AM bjorkintosh: I've mainly been writing tcl/tk lately, and it knows quite a bit there too, from harvesting data from stackoverflow, reddit, newsgroups and such
09:55 AM JT-Shop: I dislike reddit
09:58 AM bjorkintosh: I don't use it much either. however, openai cheats (they don't think so) by training on all publicly available data.
09:59 AM bjorkintosh: it's shockingly decent. not the best by far but in another 5 years, I don't know if programming or software development will remain a viable profession.
10:04 AM JT-Cave: problem I have with trying to find info on new stuff that there's not much data out there
10:04 AM JT-Cave: so using something that just harvests data won't help much... google returns the same data to me that the ai uses
10:06 AM JT-Shop: dang wind is blowing hard here
10:06 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> Yes, the "AI" doesn't invent or develop anything new. It is just a giant set of statistical weights on which word comes next.
10:07 AM bjorkintosh: the current advantage it has over google, is that while google is now thoroughly enshitified, chatgpt and its ilk aren't there yet.
10:08 AM bjorkintosh: another six months or so and we'll see ads in every prompt.
10:12 AM JT-Shop: lol
10:13 AM JT-Shop: for python, pyqt5 I have a huge amount of examples to look at... I should make them searchable
10:33 AM Roguish: A friend of mine used to work at Google. EVERYTHING at Google is about advertising......EVERYTHING
10:33 AM * JT-Shop hugs adblock
10:34 AM bjorkintosh: hahah
10:35 AM bjorkintosh: and he loved big brother ;-)
10:35 AM Roguish: google streetview went high resolution, so they could read business signs, and menus in windows...to see advertising
10:35 AM Roguish: to sell advertising
10:35 AM bjorkintosh: it's now so unreliable that I've switched to bing.
10:36 AM Roguish: Bing is just as bad.
10:36 AM Roguish: I generally use Firefox. but have started using Brave browser sometimes
10:36 AM bjorkintosh: yeah unfortunately. nowhere to turn.
10:37 AM bjorkintosh: one would actually have to start reading *and* comprehending the full manual all over again!
10:37 AM bjorkintosh: this is a travesty.
10:38 AM JT-Shop: I NEVER ever buy anything from an ad
10:38 AM JT-Shop: every search engine is about selling you something you don't need lol
10:39 AM Roguish: well, my morning newspaper just got delivered. 2 hours late.....
10:41 AM Roguish: and our power went out twice yesterday afternoon. frackin' PG&E
10:43 AM bjorkintosh: welcome to the enshitified future, Roguish. first electric power station went online 141 years ago.
10:43 AM Roguish: JT-Shop, I don't touch ads either.
10:43 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> AI code pairing is on an exponential curve of improvement
10:43 AM bjorkintosh: We're *still* trying to figure out how to deliver electricity.
10:44 AM bjorkintosh: <schoch_> correct. you have to know what you're doing or ... query in, garbage out.
10:44 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> also, now that the LLM's are good enough they can generate data for training (labeling) that is better than human generated data. this will be a huge boon for model development speed, flywheel effect
10:45 AM bjorkintosh: it will start eating its own tail.
10:45 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> M$ says 75% of code is AI generated when developers use copilot
10:45 AM bjorkintosh: and it'll reach a point of equilibrium where nothing goes in, and nothing useful comes out.
10:45 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> so all the boilerplate and ceremony is essentially autocomplete.
10:46 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> but the biggest likely benefit is that LLM's are actually getting very good at understanding and explaining an existing code base.
10:47 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> so you put the repo you are working with in the LLM's context window and it gets that much more accurate with it's recommendations and "understanding" of the code
10:52 AM bjorkintosh: so what I hope happens is that it becomes trivial to generate correct drivers regardless of OS.
10:52 AM bjorkintosh: LLM-> the ultimate VM.
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> i never liked stack exchange for that reason. IMO, their knowledge is worthless if they just act like a jackass when asked a real question.
12:51 PM Unterhausen: I thought I had some din rail mounts for a 7i73, but I looked at the one that's on din rail and I printed it
01:09 PM Tom_L: they probably don't know the answers
01:16 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> power has been out since 12:31 PM Eastern. currently on standby generator since then, though my laptop is not on a generator outlet... hope power comes back soon. it is very windy and rainy out there. gusting high winds.
02:01 PM JT-Shop: Closed. This question needs details or clarity. It is not currently accepting answers.
02:01 PM JT-Shop: Closed. This question needs to be more focused. It is not currently accepting answers.
02:06 PM skunkworks: stack exchange always seemed like a shit place to ask questions.
02:07 PM XXCoder: I remember earlier days. it wasnt as bad
02:08 PM Unterhausen: reddit sometimes works okay, but a lot of times you need to have someone else post a wrong answer
02:08 PM XXCoder: theres too many people who hold knowledge like money, ie they spend it as rarely as possible
02:10 PM Unterhausen: I'll post the wrong answer, I got lots of excess karma
02:10 PM XXCoder: its like points in "whos line is this anyway" tv show
02:18 PM JT-Shop: the thing that pisses me off is they have thousands of short questions so the person that closed mine is just being a big AH
02:19 PM JT-Shop: the closure reasons were just BS
02:31 PM JT-Shop: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/77671321/pyqt6-3d-line-drawing
02:32 PM JT-Shop: does that post show up even though it's deleted?
02:32 PM CloudEvil: no
02:33 PM CloudEvil: Just says you voulantarily removed it
02:42 PM JT-Shop: I was wondering, they closed it I deleted it
02:45 PM JT-Woodshop: Here are some similar questions that might be relevant:
02:45 PM JT-Woodshop: LOL
02:47 PM Tom_L: what finish did you decide on?
02:47 PM JT-Woodshop: I'm going to try some fiberglass resin
02:47 PM Tom_L: with cloth or without?
02:48 PM JT-Woodshop: without
02:48 PM Tom_L: when i did model boat racing, alot of guys would coat their radio box with epoxy
02:48 PM Tom_L: and seal it
02:49 PM Tom_L: i did a few fiberglass molds etc but used cloth and mesh
02:50 PM roycroft: if you don't want to use fiberglass cloth, burlap or loose linen is good
02:50 PM roycroft: some kind of fabric helps hold the resin in place while it cures
02:50 PM Tom_L: just hope the steam doesn't make it crack
02:50 PM Tom_L: with the expansion and contraction of the box
02:52 PM Tom_L: our problem wasn't that but vibration
02:52 PM JT-Woodshop: I just want to put a thin coat to seal the wood
02:52 PM XXCoder: interesting. was thinking about how to power a sealed radio etc
02:52 PM XXCoder: was thinking maybe induction and such lol
02:53 PM XXCoder: and magnet torque transfer for controls
02:53 PM roycroft: there are waterproof receptacles and plugs
02:53 PM XXCoder: I know lol
02:54 PM XXCoder: I was just thinking on what if want radio to be utterly sealed with no holes at all
02:55 PM roycroft: put batteries in it :)
02:55 PM roycroft: i would avoid inductive power near devices that use rf
02:55 PM Tom_L: JT-Woodshop, epoxy may expand a bit more than polyester resin
02:55 PM XXCoder: yeah though id make it rechargable with induction for power transfer
02:57 PM JT-Woodshop: https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b40068242/
02:59 PM Tom_L: yeah, it'll stick to just about any thing. i'm just concerned about the steam cracking it
02:59 PM Tom_L: guess it's worth a try
02:59 PM JT-Woodshop: if it does I'll try something else... I have very little time in this project and made it from otherwise unusable crap wood :)
03:41 PM JT-Shop: Righteous Felon craft jerky is pretty good
03:46 PM Tom_L: sounds wicked in a religious kind of way :)
03:47 PM Tom_L: i'm still thinking about ordering some of that chocolate
03:48 PM Tom_L: don't really need it
03:51 PM JT-Shop: which chocolate?
03:52 PM Tom_L: a client's son lives in Peru and they gave me a piece
03:52 PM Tom_L: https://trujilloshop.com/1740-iberica-mini-milky-chocolate-bars-barra-peru
03:52 PM Tom_L: they have dark chocolate as well
03:53 PM Tom_L: strong flavor unlike US chocolate
03:53 PM JT-Shop: what's shipping like from Peru
03:54 PM Tom_L: i haven't checked yet
03:55 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Iberica-Pastillas-Chocolate-Peruvian-Pastilles/dp/B08R8J5K5H
03:55 PM Tom_L: found the dark on amazon but she doesn't like dark that much
03:56 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Iberica-Chocolate-Peruano-Peruvian-Chocolates/dp/B0C4VSN1NQ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2ZZRL5WTNWK62&keywords=LA+IBERICA+MINI+MILKY&qid=1702936552&sprefix=la+iberica+mini+milky%2Caps%2C217&sr=8-1
03:58 PM JT-Shop: I might have to give that a try...
04:00 PM Tom_L: they said you can pick your own beans and make some there if you want
04:00 PM Tom_L: probably part of a tour thing or something
04:01 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Iberica-Caramelos-Surtidos-Peruanos-Peruvian/dp/B095L9F57K/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2ZZRL5WTNWK62&keywords=LA+IBERICA+MINI+MILKY&qid=1702936552&sprefix=la+iberica+mini+milky%2Caps%2C217&sr=8-2
04:02 PM XXCoder: interesting. I was recommanded few music podcast based on that candy lol
04:03 PM XXCoder: yeah im not about to hear it anytime soon
04:05 PM JT-Woodshop: coconut is a deal breaker for me lol
04:07 PM Tom_L: i'm not wild about that either
04:24 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/ZbXOeGCOHLGXYYjJDOqhKNFQ

04:34 PM Tom_L: is that what you're working on?
04:34 PM JT-Shop: yup
04:34 PM Tom_L: the belt line or something else?
04:34 PM JT-Shop: a way to lift up and inspect the bottoms so it needs to be at a 45°
04:34 PM Tom_L: ahh
04:34 PM JT-Shop: it's a real slow process lol
04:35 PM JT-Shop: when the tops and bottoms come out of the kiln they load them onto a roller convayor
04:36 PM JT-Shop: then after inspection they go to the assembly area but it takes a while to assemble one
04:58 PM Roguish: JT-Shop, hey are you working again???? you're retired....
04:58 PM JT-Shop: if a challenge comes my way I can't refuse
04:59 PM JT-Shop: gotta keep your brain challenged or you die
05:19 PM JT-Shop: property taxes went up $800 this year
05:21 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
05:21 PM Unterhausen: pa has a homestead exemption for old people
05:21 PM Unterhausen: have to check into that
05:22 PM JT-Shop: I wonder if missouri does but this it county taxes
05:23 PM JT-Shop: 90% makes the school system rich
05:26 PM Tom_L: getting difficult for first time buyers to be first time buyers
05:26 PM JT-Shop: yup getting a lot of interest on my CD's and accounts
05:27 PM solarwind: JT-Cave are you republican by any chance?
05:27 PM solarwind: JT-Shop I mean
05:28 PM JT-Shop: I don't pay attention to politics it's a waste of time... they are all liars and have personal agendas
05:29 PM solarwind: Yes but I mean your own principles, do they align with republicans'?
05:29 PM JT-Shop: democrats seem to be the most vindictive and waste a lot of time trying to cause harm to republicans
05:29 PM JT-Shop: I have no clue, I'm me and don't align with any cults
05:30 PM solarwind: It sounds like you hate taxes and education
05:30 PM solarwind: just like republicans
05:31 PM JT-Shop: not really, I dislike unjust taxes and support education
05:31 PM JT-Shop: I have two sisters that are/were in education and the waste is unreal
05:31 PM solarwind: The school system in the USA is the opposite of "rich"
05:32 PM JT-Shop: depends on the location
05:32 PM solarwind: If anything, they need more resources
05:32 PM JT-Shop: well I know that if they don't spend all they have the loose some so they have creative spending programs...
05:33 PM solarwind: That would be corruption and corporate bribery
05:33 PM JT-Shop: and education is not about teaching it's about meeting quotas
05:34 PM JT-Shop: if your class grade average is not high enough you get in trouble
05:34 PM JT-Shop: it was worse when I was in high school so I can't complain much
05:34 PM solarwind: Either americans are just more retarded than the rest of the world by nature, or the schooling is just _really_ bad
05:35 PM solarwind: I think the latter is more likely
05:35 PM JT-Shop: politics are retarded not americans
05:36 PM solarwind: Yes but also americans fight against their own best interest. See what they did to Bernie Sanders, the one guy who was actually trying to help them
05:36 PM JT-Shop: like I said I don't pay attention to politics it's a waste of my time
05:37 PM XXCoder: its unfortunately waste of time that affects us all.
05:38 PM JT-Shop: unfortunately it's something you and me can't change
05:40 PM JT-Shop: it's been a long time since politicians were working for the good of the country
05:42 PM Unterhausen: I just looked up the homestead exemption, it's paid for out of the state lottery
05:43 PM JT-Shop: wow the lottery is good for something :)
05:44 PM Unterhausen: they always say that at the end of their ads, actually
05:44 PM JT-Shop: I hope it's really true...
05:45 PM Unterhausen: however, the way you sign up for it is about as clear as mud
05:45 PM Unterhausen: and also, we're rich here, so our school district might not get as much money
05:46 PM JT-Shop: so rich folks don't pay taxes?
05:46 PM XXCoder: shocking isnt it
05:47 PM JT-Shop: rich folks here don't pay for vehicle taxes they all use dealer plates which really pisses me off
05:47 PM JT-Shop: their freaking millionaires pay your damn taxes like the rest of us
05:49 PM Unterhausen: they distribute the money from the state depending on need somehow.
05:50 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, iirc i took some sort of homestead exemption
05:50 PM Tom_L: not sure what it amounted to
05:50 PM roycroft: that's the american way
05:50 PM roycroft: rich people don't pay taxes and then complain that poor people don't pay enough taxes
05:51 PM Unterhausen: if they paid poor people better, their tax bill would go down
05:51 PM JT-Shop: you just have to be a uaw worker to make a lot of money
05:51 PM roycroft: awesome
05:52 PM Tom_L: too many don't want to work
05:52 PM roycroft: the georgia elections workers that just got a $150 million settlement against guiliani just sued him again for defamation again, after his rant outside the courthouse
05:53 PM XXCoder: fun
05:53 PM Unterhausen: my son is a uaw worker. Grad student at UCSD
05:53 PM roycroft: guiliani is one of those "not capable of learning" people
05:53 PM roycroft: along with $formerpresident and alex jones and the rest of their ilk
05:53 PM JT-Shop: Unterhausen, what does he make an hour? just wondering
05:54 PM * roycroft loves seeing people deserving of punishment being punished
05:54 PM Unterhausen: Jones seems smartest of those 3, he mostly shut up and hid his assets
05:54 PM Unterhausen: JT, not sure, he lives okay for what he does
05:54 PM JT-Shop: it's been rumored that they make up to $75 an hour with benifits
05:54 PM Unterhausen: grad students? nah
05:55 PM Unterhausen: OTOH, if it's sponsored research, they cost $75 an hour
05:55 PM JT-Shop: grad student working for the uaw?
05:55 PM JT-Shop: so he is not a factory worker?
05:55 PM Unterhausen: they unionized the grad students in the UC system
05:55 PM JT-Shop: ah
05:55 PM roycroft: the alternative is what most grad students do - live in their mom's basement
05:56 PM Unterhausen: that's what they do after the get their phdd
05:56 PM JT-Shop: I'm not familiar with that because the school system sucked so bad I dropped out
05:56 PM Unterhausen: the engineering students voted down the union because they would get paid less
05:57 PM Unterhausen: at penn state
05:57 PM Unterhausen: but even though the union lost, the university gives them decent health insurance now
05:57 PM JT-Shop: you get paid to be a student?
05:57 PM Unterhausen: most grad students get paid for working as a TA or an RA
05:58 PM roycroft: i just ran into one of my favorite cashiers at the local market
05:58 PM JT-Shop: interesting, I had no clue
05:58 PM roycroft: i haven't seen her since last summer
05:58 PM roycroft: because she is a student at the university of alaska
05:58 PM Unterhausen: Mechanical engineering department wouldn't take a grad student unless they could support them one way or another
05:58 PM roycroft: she plays volleyball and got a full scholarship by being on their volleyball team
05:59 PM roycroft: it makes it worth living in fairbanks 9 months out of the year
05:59 PM roycroft: it's going to save her a lifetime of being in debt repaying student loans
05:59 PM Unterhausen: my son has to teach math
05:59 PM JT-Shop: I've been to Fairbanks and it's not a nice place... Anchorage it much better place to live
05:59 PM roycroft: she says she's not a great volleyball player, but it's hard for the school to find athletes
05:59 PM roycroft: so the bar is kind of low for the scholarships
06:00 PM roycroft: if you're there for school and all you do is study and play volleyball fairbanks is probably tolerable
06:00 PM roycroft: but yeah, i've heard it's a pretty dirty city, and crime is really high there
06:00 PM solarwind: what the hell is THIS https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006240903615.html
06:01 PM solarwind: how does it work?
06:01 PM JT-Shop: my granddaughter plays softball for the central ark collage next year
06:01 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
06:02 PM solarwind: JT-Shop I'm going to call _you_ at night, if you know what I mean ;)
06:02 PM roycroft: i need to head back out to the shop
06:03 PM roycroft: bi-mart had a nice 4k 43" tv on clearance for $150, and i decided it would be a nice thing to have in the shop
06:03 PM solarwind: NOOO DONT
06:03 PM roycroft: it's sitting on my tablesaw right now, but i just got a vesa wall mount for it
06:03 PM solarwind: Make sure it's IPS
06:03 PM solarwind: it's almost certainly shitty TN or VA
06:03 PM solarwind: the viewing angles will be garbage
06:03 PM roycroft: it's fine
06:04 PM roycroft: it's mainly to watch youtube videos when i'm doing mindless other things
06:04 PM roycroft: the ads will bother me more than the viewing angle
06:04 PM roycroft: but hopefully i'll find a way to stream my laptop to it, and i can install an ad blocker on my laptop
06:05 PM * roycroft hasn't had a shop tv since the crt days, and that's been a while
06:05 PM solarwind: ublock origin and sponsorblock extensions are your friend
06:06 PM solarwind: and a direct connection with an HDMI/displayport cable
06:06 PM solarwind: and never connect the TV to the internet, obviously
06:10 PM XXCoder: that reminded me of that time smart tv was acciently enabled its own internal ad
06:10 PM XXCoder: they fixed it, but it was acciently revealed that they planned to have tv insert its own ads
06:10 PM XXCoder: when I bought a yv for my vp later on, I carefully ensured that it wasnt smart tv
06:11 PM XXCoder: it was pretty hard to find one. I wonder if its even possible now
06:34 PM Unterhausen: people list tv's on the buy nothing group, and sometimes they mention it's not a smart tv, like that's a defect
06:35 PM Tom_L: who would want a dumb one?
06:35 PM Unterhausen: dumb ones are better, you can hook it up to whatever device you want without interference
06:36 PM Unterhausen: we use an external roku with our samsung, and their internal menu obscures half the screen until they realize you aren't going to watch any of their apps
06:37 PM Tom_L: there is that however you can get roku on them
06:37 PM Tom_L: as well as your phone etc
06:47 PM Roguish: roycroft, don't forget, ya can always turn the vidiot box off...
06:47 PM Roguish: or just not on.
06:51 PM Roguish: ok, time to get supper ready. ttfn
06:59 PM solarwind: OHHHH It's a "burnishing" tool to cold roll the peaks into the valleys
06:59 PM solarwind: never even thought of that, sounds like it could solve most of my surface finish issues
07:02 PM solarwind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7JhjTQevow I quite like this design
07:02 PM solarwind: especially the mill burnishing tool
07:02 PM Unterhausen: I'm getting nowhere with solidworks, I might have to buy the maker version
07:02 PM solarwind: "buy" wink wink
07:09 PM Unterhausen: it's only $100
07:13 PM Tom_L: year subscription?
07:14 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> thats actually pretty decent
07:15 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> \idk what they strip from it though
07:15 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> if you can still do assmeblies and configurations, thats not too shabby
07:23 PM Unterhausen: it may not have some of the toolboxes
07:24 PM Unterhausen: $39 right now
07:25 PM Unterhausen: cloud based, unfortunately. Can work offline though, unlike fusion
07:26 PM Tom_L: most of them are cloud based now
07:26 PM Tom_L: unfortunately
07:28 PM Tom_L: i know at the vo'tech, if their server goes down, everybody goes home because they can't do anything
07:29 PM Unterhausen: it's nowhere near as bad as fusion though
07:29 PM Unterhausen: even full license to fusion requires that they keep their servers up, which they don't
07:29 PM Unterhausen: there is a way to install locally, but you have to log in
07:30 PM Unterhausen: I'm going to take this opportunity to learn freecad, unless SW answers me soon
07:39 PM Tom_L: do you use it mostly for the cad or cam or both?
07:39 PM roycroft: what kind of machine are you designing for, unterhausen?
07:57 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> cloud based? f
07:57 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> thats just for the maker version then i assume
08:04 PM XXCoder: solarwind: interesting tool!
08:05 PM solarwind: Very expensive to buy for no reason. It's just a bearing with a relatively hard outside mounted on a lathe tool
08:06 PM XXCoder: seemed like pretty makable, though I wasnt sure what tool contact parts metal was
08:07 PM solarwind: I'm going to make one with an O1 or A2 steel roller
08:07 PM XXCoder: let us know how well it worked
08:07 PM solarwind: yeah
08:08 PM XXCoder: I wonder about mill one and interupppted umm "cutting"
08:08 PM solarwind: There are some videos on that, at least with lathe interrupted cuts, it works fine
08:09 PM XXCoder: saw that, still wondered though
08:09 PM XXCoder: it barely showed anything on mill one
08:10 PM XXCoder: finish looked all all way to edge so I guess it works fine. I wonder what setups like
08:10 PM XXCoder: I wonder what range of materials would work too
08:10 PM solarwind: anything
08:11 PM solarwind: it's just a cold rolling process, that's all
08:11 PM XXCoder: even steels that work hardens as soon as you start prepping tools for it?
08:11 PM solarwind: probably work even better
08:11 PM XXCoder: ok
08:12 PM solarwind: the contact area is very small (but larger than the nose radius of a cutting tool), so the pressure is very high even though the overall force isn't very large
08:12 PM XXCoder: is it just shaped rod or is it with bearing ball at end?
08:14 PM solarwind: there seem to be two kinds: the one with the "pointy" tip which I can't tell if it's just a fixed piece of diamond or actually rolls, and then there's the ones with the rollers that actually roll like bearings
08:14 PM XXCoder: ok
08:15 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420> like a ballpoint pen
08:15 PM solarwind: if so, that makes sense
08:15 PM solarwind: explains why they're quite expensive
08:16 PM solarwind: But this one is dead simple to make: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKJzPjWY4ow
08:16 PM solarwind: I like this design quite a bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCM7ou-7weo the tapered solid carbide roller
08:17 PM solarwind: And this one seems to be very versatile for profiles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s51L8kKZ_Ho while also being pretty straightforward to make
08:18 PM solarwind: It looks like that dial indicator that's mounted on the tool is the spring force meter
08:20 PM solarwind: Looks like it works well with 1045 and chrome moly steels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsRu3StpRsw
08:21 PM solarwind: and stainless
08:21 PM XXCoder: bearing one interesting
08:21 PM XXCoder: though probably heavy on load'
08:22 PM solarwind: Should work just fine on mild steel as long as the bearing out race is made of decent steel
08:22 PM XXCoder: wonder if one thats like kurling type where i pushes down and up at same time would work
08:23 PM solarwind: Probably would, but they're _all_ tapered/angled. The entire face of the roller is not in contact with the workpiece. Only the leading edge is and then the rest has a very small clearance, looks like 1° or so
08:23 PM solarwind: So the overall force is very little and the pressure at point of contact is very high, _much_ higher than what is needed to roll over a tool mark "thread" pattern into the valley
08:24 PM solarwind: So hardness of the roller (aka resistance to local deformation) is important
08:24 PM XXCoder: if I did that top and bottom thing, probably only one would be made to cut
08:25 PM XXCoder: if possible. im not in position ot test stuff lol
08:25 PM solarwind: Which is probably why a steady rest doesn't have the same effect since the entire face of the bearing is in contact with the workpiece
08:26 PM XXCoder: yeah
09:02 PM roycroft: i just screwed up the base to the book press i'm working on, becausei was using a new router and i wasn't familiar enough with it to feel comfortable with it
09:02 PM roycroft: i can fix it, but it's going to set me back a couple days, as i have to cut a piece of patch wood, glue it in, and flush it up
09:03 PM roycroft: but the main message here is that while i often make mistakes like that when getting used to a new tool, i also did some operations with the shaper origin that i had not done before, and had not done anything similar, and that worked out brilliantly
09:04 PM roycroft: i need to knock on wood now, but i've not had a single screw-up with the origin
09:04 PM roycroft: it's very intuitive and works really well
09:05 PM roycroft: the new router that i screwed up with is a festool, so it's not some crappy router
09:08 PM roycroft: and a volcano just erupted in iceland
09:08 PM XXCoder: yep
09:08 PM roycroft: just in time to stuff up holiday flights between europe and north america
09:09 PM XXCoder: grinch did it
09:10 PM roycroft: it's not predicted to wreak as much havoc as the eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010
09:10 PM roycroft: so maybe it will be not terrible
09:12 PM roycroft: and now there was a 6.2 magnitude in northern china, killing at least 100 people
09:12 PM roycroft: it's shake-shake-shake night on the planet
09:18 PM solarwind: I just tried the burnishing thing by hand with a skateboard bearing on a shaft
09:18 PM solarwind: it definitely works
09:19 PM solarwind: going to steal some ballpoint pens from the office tomorrow. They have tungsten carbide balls for some reason
09:20 PM solarwind: while fountain pens usually have stainless steel nibs and last forever
09:26 PM roycroft: my fountain pens have gold nibs
09:27 PM solarwind: yeah the more expensive ones do. In practice, I've found there's no difference in feel between good steel nibs and gold/platinum nibs
09:27 PM roycroft: but they are all vintage pens - i think the newest one was made in the '60s
09:58 PM solarwind: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002676489736.html are these solid carbide HOLDERS?
09:58 PM solarwind: They come in 3 variants: steel, HSS, and carbide
09:58 PM solarwind: why would you want a holder made of HSS? I don't think the modulus of elasticity is any different from low carbon steel
09:58 PM solarwind: solid carbide I can understand for higher rigidity possibly
