01:25 AM Deejay: moin
02:19 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> good morning
02:19 AM XXCoder: yo
04:39 AM Tom_L: morning
05:32 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/KBYIWGGBzDZjZhjhTtyWlnuA
05:32 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Would anyone have any insight as to why my threading is pulsing like this.
05:34 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:58 AM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Also when it was cutting material it was cross threading / multistart threading so the position was alligned
06:09 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> Morning 🙂
06:16 AM JT-Cave: 45°F High: 51°F
06:55 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
07:18 AM Tom_L: 31°F High 53°F
07:26 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> 29F/33F and snowing (6in so far)
07:32 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> power just blipped... i have a standby generator for power, if needed, but if the cable goes out, i lose internet, TV and phone... i would be stuck with just a cellular WiFi hotspot...
09:17 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_> maybe signal noise?
10:20 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> are you using encoder.N.position-interpolated? if not - you should be..
10:55 AM * JT-Cave was in the Primo ceramic cooker factory this morning and saw what the competition cookers look like after a trip through their kiln
10:56 AM JT-Cave: all the chinlee ones melted and the green one broke
10:56 AM bjorkintosh: they buy competition's items?
10:58 AM roycroft: if i were a manufacturer i would
11:01 AM JT-Cave: yup they bought one of each
11:07 AM JT-Cave: they had a bbq competition a few months back with the grand prize of 25k
11:07 AM bjorkintosh: damn!
11:07 AM bjorkintosh: they must be making $$$$$$$.$$$
11:08 AM JT-Cave: https://www.primogrill.com/
11:11 AM bjorkintosh: nice origin story.
12:37 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, you still workin on emc6?
01:38 PM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> This is when feeding at 1000 rpm 0.2mm/rev a bit of flutter but not to the significant that I would expect to cause the pulsing
01:38 PM skunkworks: (R3scapind!
01:38 PM skunkworks: are
01:40 PM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/QjYdlsOtCLbSMVNreWrmtdPQ
01:40 PM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> It appears I am not. I am a step config guy so I don't have experience fiddling with the hal file. Where would I add this?
01:42 PM skunkworks: sfakl;nm
01:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> lol
01:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> simonbasil (@_discord_387317757516972044:jauriarts.org) your line (sqinting)
01:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> wait.
01:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> net spinde-position encoder.0.postion motion.spindle-revs
01:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> net spinde-position encoder.0.postion-interpolated motion.spindle-revs
01:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (check spelling)
01:57 PM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Done the maths on the rpm to feedrate and it looks correct I will do a proper cut test tomorrow thanks so much man!
01:57 PM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> You are my hero!
01:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Yay - If you have an 'index only' encoder - or index + low count encoder- You need to have the encoder 'interpolate' the position..
02:22 PM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> Thanks so much man. Is there a donations to the lcnc project? If not do you want a gear knob for free?
02:23 PM lcnc-relay: <simonbasil> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/XsQzqQICEvZVEoZNyGgizrEN
02:30 PM roycroft: send beer
02:30 PM roycroft: that always helps
02:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> brandy old fasions...
02:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> fashions?
02:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> simonbasil (@_discord_387317757516972044:jauriarts.org) just pass on the help.
02:45 PM roycroft: any sort of refreshing beverage would be fine, i'm sure
02:48 PM Loetmichel: Hmm... on one hand i am a bit miffed that i miscalculated the materal removal rate of a chinese CNC 6040 by a factor of 10. On the other hand: quite impressive for a router toy to run close to 80h continous without a single missing step. (making a 17" notebook body out of a 500mm by 350mm by 20mm slab of AlMg3 with a 6mm two flute mill bit :)
02:48 PM Loetmichel: ... 0.3mm depth of cut at 800mm/sec at a time :)
02:54 PM roycroft: speaking of refreshing beverages
02:54 PM roycroft: i just got off the phone with my medical insurance company about a billing snafu
02:54 PM roycroft: 4 representatives and 90 minutes later i'm not sure i'm farther along than when i started
02:55 PM roycroft: methinks it may be time for one of those refreshing beverages
03:06 PM perry_j1987: afternoon all
03:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Getting mom set after dad died.. Lots of phone calls like that...
03:21 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Think am about 90% there though.. So Yay.
03:32 PM roycroft: it can be infuriating when the problem is simple and understandable and everyone agrees on what happened and what needs to be fixed
03:33 PM roycroft: but the process of fixing it can be challenging, to say the least
04:53 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, yes... working on the g code viewer it will take a bit
04:56 PM Tom_L: ahh ok
04:57 PM Tom_L: probably one of the bigger challenges
04:57 PM JT-Shop: dr said no lumps or bumps call us when you need us
04:57 PM Tom_L: don't call us, we'll call you
04:57 PM JT-Shop: interesting for sure to make it highlight the current line
04:58 PM JT-Shop: after that I need to do run from line
04:58 PM Tom_L: been kinda off all day. kid came home from work last night (midnight) after ~3hrs work
04:58 PM Tom_L: power in the whole plant went out
04:58 PM Tom_L: or maybe it was just the lab
04:59 PM Tom_L: anyway, his building
04:59 PM Tom_L: usually don't see him til around 6:30am
04:59 PM JT-Shop: does he run the huge gantry mill?
05:00 PM Tom_L: no this is the hvac plant
05:00 PM Tom_L: the other one got sent home a while back for the same reason and yes he runs the big gantries
05:01 PM Tom_L: the first one works in the torture test cells
05:01 PM JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/Pl1ytAcjQmc?list=PLB00JHoTw1TeX82Qw8hoFLRJI89Us_jMw&t=388
05:02 PM Tom_L: ahh i remember that one
05:02 PM Tom_L: at least the pour part
05:08 PM Tom_L: when did they stop using rocks for ballast?
05:08 PM JT-Shop: not sure
05:08 PM Tom_L: you go to savannah and there's a street paved with ship rock ballast
05:08 PM Tom_L: unload the ballast and fill with goods
05:09 PM JT-Shop: interesting, must have been a tall ship
05:09 PM Tom_L: i've no idea
05:09 PM Tom_L: i'm sure it was a collection of several over time
05:24 PM Tom_L: https://visitsavannah.com/list/betcha-didnt-know-these-facts-about-river-street
05:26 PM Tom_L: http://objectmatters.ruinmemories.org/ballast-stones-paving-the-streeets-of-savannah/
05:31 PM Tom_L: i suppose it would depend on the purpose of the ship as to whether the ballast was permanent or not
05:35 PM JT-Shop: seems permanent ballast keels were not on a tall ship so internal ballast is the only way
05:35 PM JT-Shop: if your sailing one empty I assume you need to put some rock ballast in
05:36 PM JT-Shop: my sailboat had a cast iron swing keel
05:55 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
06:33 PM roycroft: we broke the record high temperature for the day today
06:34 PM roycroft: and it wasn't even raining
06:34 PM XXCoder: sat supposely wll have snow. I doubt it
06:34 PM roycroft: it will be raining soon, though, but we're not in the direct path of the new "atomspheric river"
06:35 PM roycroft: which i call "rainstorm"
06:35 PM roycroft: but it looks like the olympic penninsula is going to get hit really ahrd
06:35 PM roycroft: hard
06:35 PM roycroft: and vancouver island
06:42 PM roycroft: george santos has a new job working for cameo
06:42 PM roycroft: so you can hire him to make a personalized video that you can send to your worst enemy for their birthday
06:42 PM roycroft: it only costs $200
06:43 PM roycroft: at least he's not on onlyfans
06:44 PM roycroft: as a content provider, that is
06:45 PM * roycroft expects that santos will be mostly forgettable before long
06:45 PM roycroft: his 15 minutes are over
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> saturday - starlink started acting dumb.. Could only get to a few sites (youtube, google stuff). went on reddit - not the only one - they pushed a firmware update that seemed to have issues (maybe dns)
06:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Sent in a support ticket - pointed to the reddit thread.. Get an email back saying - I am having connectivity issues. Sending you a new starlink system. No charge. ticket closed.
06:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> pushed a different firmware about the same time and things went back to normal.
07:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> So - I guess I am getting a backup starlink..
07:02 PM XXCoder: unless its a pack and return
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (honestly - this is about the second time that I know of that starlink has been down. We have had it since 2021..)
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> XXCoder: nope.. 'Your original Starlink is yours to keep and dispose of as you see fit.'
07:05 PM XXCoder: interesting. I wonder why as its easily reclaimable, or even maybe just reflash it
07:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> We have the first generation dish and hardware.. I don't think they are re-using them
07:06 PM XXCoder: oh theres already new version ok
07:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> atleast 3 so far
07:08 PM XXCoder: interesting
07:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> been very happy with it.. (compared to the shit dsl we had)
07:11 PM XXCoder: I bet. some areas really didnt have option before starlink
07:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Certianly a game changer.
07:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> It turned from - wth isn't the internet working to pretty much forgetting about it.
07:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (we had hughesnet a long time ago - that sucked but was better than dialup)
07:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> then dsl - but they oversold the area and we were lucky to get 1mbsX128kbs
07:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> now durring peak times we get 50 to 100mbs.. 10-20mbs up
07:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> it is pretty crazy too.. Hughesnet - you needed a professional installer.. - took us 6 months to get ours installed.. Starlink - you set it in your yard - power it up - you are surfing within 10 minutes.
07:26 PM XXCoder: yeah
07:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> phased array antennas are cool 😉
07:34 PM bjorkintosh: https://mastodon.social/@nixCraft/111524624349506446
07:49 PM roycroft: i hope your dog has strong teeth
07:59 PM XXCoder: apparently there is cop dogs with titanium fangs
07:59 PM XXCoder: they might be able to play.
08:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I am probably going to stick with the old dish until it dies..
08:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> bjork: yes - pretty cool tech.. Hughesnet was geosynchronous.. so ping times are in the seconds..
08:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> but you don't have to 'move' the dish..
08:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> starlink - the satellites are low earth orbit. so the signal get passed from satellite to satellite...
08:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> The dish doesn't move - it 'steers' the signal to the dish using magic (phased array antenna..)
08:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I get 23-50ms ping times..
08:26 PM bjorkintosh: steers?
08:26 PM bjorkintosh: how does it know when it's reached a target?
08:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phased_array
08:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I really only have a really basic understanding how it works
08:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> But the signal is steered electronically - to keep pointing at the moving satellite..
08:28 PM bjorkintosh: interesting.
08:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I don't know how it 'knows' that it is pointing in the right direction.. but it must work pretty well
08:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> And I bet a really good time base
08:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> It is just crazy.. Like - how did they get this up and running - and running so good in such a short period of time...
08:31 PM bjorkintosh: oh the array is in your antenna on the ground.
08:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> yes - but I assume the atenna on the satellite does the same thing..
08:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> antenna
08:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> it certainly isn't pointing a dish directly at me while it flys over.
08:33 PM bjorkintosh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qs2QcycggWU
08:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> I am sure there is a starlink 'theory of operations' video somewher
08:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> well -there you go
08:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> There was some comment that each satelite has at least 3 computers - all running some linux..
08:35 PM bjorkintosh: of course.
08:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> That is a pretty good video.,.
08:51 PM bjorkintosh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJr1rLq0IrE
10:38 PM solarwind: I've been turning this unknown metal that seems to work harden, but I don't think it's stainless
10:39 PM solarwind: it seems like a cylinder pin and I found 3 of them, covered in rust
10:39 PM solarwind: but when I turned them initially with a carbide insert, they turned to a very high polish, which was really interesting
10:39 PM solarwind: on the second pass, they instantly wrecked every carbide insert I tried
10:39 PM solarwind: The only thing that could get through was a CBN insert
10:40 PM solarwind: $10 CBN insert from aliexpress which is frankly amazing because no matter how I try to abuse it, it's completely unscratched
10:40 PM solarwind: and it tore through that (what I assume is) work hardened layer like it was nothing when every carbide insert got damaged
10:41 PM solarwind: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004783048299.html this is seriously the real deal. I don't know how they're selling actual CBN inserts for less than the price of a brand name carbide insert
10:42 PM XXCoder: what dollar each?
10:42 PM XXCoder: you cant buy insert holder box for that price
10:42 PM solarwind: < $10 CAD free shipping
10:42 PM solarwind: and it arrived in less than 2 weeks'
10:42 PM XXCoder: 5 usd+ free shipping
10:43 PM roycroft: quality, name brand inserts can be had on ebay for that price or less
10:43 PM solarwind: not CBN, I looked
10:46 PM solarwind: Whatever material the cylinder pins are made of, they're hard to machine. They get really hot after just one pass, throw sparks and if you stop in the middle of a cut, have to switch to a CBN insert to resume or it'll ruin the next carbide insert you try
10:46 PM solarwind: I'm assuming the heat is what's allowing them to machine to a very high polish
10:47 PM XXCoder: if temp is changing constantly it probably wouldnt
10:48 PM solarwind: When I say high polish, it looks like a precision ground shaft stock after one pass
10:51 PM Tom_L: high polish is like a round gage pin
10:51 PM solarwind: yeah, looks like that
10:52 PM solarwind: What kind of steel behaves like that?
10:53 PM Tom_L: higher carbon content?
10:53 PM solarwind: That just might be it. I've never turned anything higher than 1018, so I wouldn't know
10:53 PM Tom_L: get a XRF spectrometer
10:54 PM solarwind: I've turned things like 12L14 and such, but that's completely different
10:54 PM solarwind: I KNOW, I would if I could
10:54 PM Tom_L: only 50k
10:55 PM solarwind: Mild steel turns easy and the inserts last forever, but the surface finish is trash
10:55 PM solarwind: seems like the localized temperature at the point of the cutting action is a very large factor
10:56 PM XXCoder: im no means expert, but isnt other possible causes chatter, and chips dragging at cutter also?
10:56 PM solarwind: Never had a chatter issue on my lathe, it's pretty rigid
10:57 PM solarwind: My results are exactly like all the papers I find on the subject
10:57 PM Tom_L: cutter geometry can make all the difference
10:57 PM solarwind: Yes that too
10:57 PM solarwind: small approach angles result in better surface finish
10:58 PM solarwind: surface speed has a very large effect on surface finish (increases), and tool life (decreases)
10:58 PM Tom_L: so does a radius'd tool on most things
10:59 PM solarwind: Radius and feed rate, and wiper inserts, but surprisingly not nearly as much as approach angles and surface speed
10:59 PM solarwind: I found a few papers, my observations have agreed with their results
11:00 PM solarwind: I need to get a surface roughness tester soon. My whole thing is about being able to turn profiles with best possible finish without having to grind
11:00 PM solarwind: Aluminum is easy. Mild steel is the hardest
11:01 PM solarwind: Vertical shear tool works quite well for turning shafts, but difficult for profiling
11:02 PM solarwind: But vertical shear tool is the best I have for turning to single digit µm precision and I confirmed it works. I can take 10µm passes and measure that it meets tolerance every single time
11:02 PM XXCoder: fun. glad I mostly ran alum and with programs done already for me lol
11:02 PM solarwind: You can turn aluminum with your finger nail ol
11:02 PM XXCoder: no way, my nails arent that tough
11:03 PM XXCoder: and I didnt run lathes most times lol
11:05 PM solarwind: My 14x40 is a LOT more rigid than I imagined
11:05 PM XXCoder: if it can do parts you need then its great
11:08 PM solarwind: It makes me cringe every time I watch blondiehacks or similar with their tiny "precision matthews" shit that flexes if you look at it funny
11:08 PM XXCoder: well
11:08 PM solarwind: I just hate precision matthews
11:08 PM XXCoder: like I said, if it works for projects they run, then its fine
11:11 PM roycroft: maybe you should not watch blondihacks, solarwind
11:12 PM roycroft: all that cringing could cause a muscle spasm
11:12 PM XXCoder: or turn into a tic
11:41 PM flyback: FAIR WARNING
11:41 PM flyback: THIS IS PRETTY BAD
11:41 PM flyback: BUT IF YOU EVER need to show someone who fucks around machine tools
11:41 PM flyback: what can happen
11:41 PM flyback: https://watchpeopledie.tv/h/industrial/post/204/the-russian-lathe-video
11:45 PM roycroft: the url is warning enough for me
11:45 PM flyback: the guy wraps around the lathe shaft and is literally spun apart
11:45 PM flyback: yeah it's very bad
11:46 PM flyback: but it's a good video if you need to teach your employee a lesson to why you don't fuck around machine tools
11:46 PM roycroft: i'll just advise agsinst doing that and decline watching it
11:53 PM XXCoder: im not much for gore videos.
