01:44 AM Deejay: moin
04:19 AM Tom_L: morning
04:45 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:46 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
07:34 AM * JT-Cave just started a PyQt6 EMC GUI :)
07:38 AM Tom_L: for the bp?
08:15 AM JT-Cave: yup or for anyone that want's to use it
08:15 AM Tom_L: right
08:16 AM JT-Cave: just working out the basics atm, it loads with emc but that's all
08:16 AM Tom_L: can't run those on my mill, it's wheezy
08:17 AM Tom_L: not sure i would anyway. i'm pretty used to axis
08:17 AM JT-Cave: https://github.com/jethornton/EMC6
08:17 AM JT-Cave: not sure about the name yet...
08:18 AM JT-Cave: yeah need debian 12 or later iirc
08:21 AM Tom_L: if i ever get that mini itx MB i've been looking at i might try it
08:23 AM JT-Cave: thanks, I can use the input
08:23 AM Tom_L: not something i need to get though
08:23 AM Tom_L: i could run it on the test pc but not on live hardware
08:23 AM JT-Cave: it can be used by mouse and keyboard or touch screen
08:24 AM JT-Cave: no need to run it on live hardware to check out the feel and look
08:24 AM Tom_L: i don't own a touch screen either
08:25 AM Tom_L: i doubt linux would behave on a surface pro. there's one of those laying around ehre
08:25 AM Tom_L: here
08:28 AM Tom_L: i'd have to update qtpy to play along wouldn't i?
08:41 AM Tom_L: bbl
08:47 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, if you use gdebi it will pull in all required packages
10:58 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, no i figured that but if i want to 'participate' i would need to update qtpy right?
11:00 AM JT-Cave: when you install the deb with gdebi it will install all the libraries you need
11:00 AM JT-Cave: hard to say if you have or don't have python3-pyqt6 or not now
11:02 AM Tom_L: just what i installed the other day to fix the tab order
11:02 AM Tom_L: iirc that was 5
11:03 AM Tom_L: i can look in a bit.. just got in
11:10 AM bloody-amateur: Hello, I am new here and try to setup a raspberry pi 4 8GB with linuxcnc. I used the image for RPI 2.9.1 as provided on the web site and wrote the image using the official RPI imager. Everything seemed to work fine, the system was booting fine and I got a login prompt, but I can not log in. It seems that there is a pwd set that I do not have. It does not matter if I set a pwd in the imager or not. I tried all the
11:10 AM bloody-amateur: standard user-id / pwd combinations that I could find for RPI, I repeated the process like 10 time now with different settings in the imager Always the same result the login is denied. Has anybody an idea what I am doing wrong?
11:11 AM Tom_L: i forgot what andy did on the login/password on that...
11:11 AM Tom_L: try cnc
11:11 AM Tom_L: what's the username?
11:12 AM Tom_L: there are a couple different images
11:14 AM Tom_L: anybody remember the link to the 2.9.1 debs?
11:14 AM bloody-amateur: there is no username prompted, so I have to type one.
11:14 AM Tom_L: is it buster or bookworm?
11:14 AM Tom_L: bookworm is the latest one
11:14 AM Tom_L: and i'm trying to find the link
11:14 AM bloody-amateur: bookworm
11:15 AM Tom_L: try cnc / cnc
11:15 AM Tom_L: see what that gets you
11:15 AM bloody-amateur: https://www.linuxcnc.org/iso/linuxcnc-2.9.1-bookworm-rpi4.img.xz
11:16 AM Tom_L: ^^ that should work
11:16 AM roycroft: worst case you can mount the sd card in another linux machine and edit /etc/shadow to delete the root password
11:16 AM roycroft: then set it to what you want on the rpi
11:17 AM Tom_L: not sure there is a root passwd on that one
11:17 AM Tom_L: yet
11:17 AM roycroft: if not then log in as root
11:17 AM Tom_L: pretty sure cnc/cnc will work
11:18 AM bloody-amateur: cnc cnc worked thank you
11:19 AM Tom_L: :) that should be available somewhere
11:21 AM bloody-amateur: thank you very much
11:24 AM Tom_L: bloody-amateur, there are likely some config tweaks you can do to improve the latency on that some
11:29 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, what folder has the deb?
11:30 AM Tom_L: or do i need to make that myself
11:30 AM JT-Shop: hmm I forgot what Andy set the password to...
11:30 AM Tom_L: cnc
11:31 AM Tom_L: user and pass
11:31 AM JT-Shop: we need to remember that lol
11:31 AM Tom_L: somebody should write it down
11:31 AM Tom_L: :)
11:31 AM * JT-Shop hears something in the distance calling his name
11:31 AM Tom_L: i don't remember what the old one was
11:32 AM JT-Shop: not sure why you would change it from the default rpi password
11:32 AM JT-Shop: pi raspberry
11:32 AM Tom_L: it's bookworm
11:32 AM JT-Shop: ah ok
11:32 AM * JT-Shop listens to the voice in his head and wanders inside for a nap
11:33 AM Tom_L: do i need to build the emc6 or is there a deb?
11:33 AM JT-Shop: give me time to make it actually do something :)
11:33 AM Tom_L: oh
11:33 AM Tom_L: and here i was all excited....
11:33 AM JT-Shop: and yes there is a deb but not sure if it works on rpi or not
11:34 AM JT-Shop: I just started today lol
11:34 AM Tom_L: i usually test on a pc anyway unless it's rpi specific
11:34 AM JT-Shop: I think testing on pc is good enough until I get it mostly done
11:34 AM Tom_L: i'll wait a day or so
11:34 AM Tom_L: food then nap.
11:36 AM JT-Shop: food done, nap now
11:39 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, when I'm ready to start the deb will be in the release like mesact
12:36 PM roycroft: have any of you used sendcutsend.com for custom parts?
01:06 PM JT-Shop: I've not heard of them
01:07 PM roycroft: they do laser/waterjet/sheet metal fabrication work, and for pretty good prices
01:07 PM roycroft: i may need a number of sheet metal parts on an ongoing basis, and would prefer to avoid having to manufacture them myself
01:07 PM roycroft: especially since i sold my brake a while back
01:08 PM roycroft: their prices are good enough that i don't mind ordering a sample, but it would be interesting to hear from folks who have experience with them
01:08 PM JT-Shop: I used http://www.dejongmfg.com/
01:08 PM JT-Shop: used them for quite a few years for spyder parts
01:09 PM roycroft: i'll check them out, thanks
01:10 PM roycroft: these are pretty simple parts - a rectangle, a few holes, two bends, radiused corners
01:10 PM roycroft: but i need a really good finish on them
01:11 PM JT-Shop: the parts I had them make were from p&o 11 gauge and the cut was smooth
01:11 PM roycroft: dejong do powder coating
01:11 PM * roycroft needs more like 22ga
01:13 PM JT-Shop: I used a different place for powder coating
01:13 PM JT-Shop: I'm sure they can do any gauge
01:13 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i need powder coating
01:14 PM roycroft: in fact, these will be lamp brackets, and having them be reflective would likely be desirable
01:14 PM roycroft: so shiny steel might be nice
01:14 PM roycroft: or white powder coating
01:14 PM roycroft: as long as it's glossy
01:14 PM JT-Shop: I lied I used someone to anodize some parts, I did the powder coating myself
01:14 PM XXCoder: can always do nickel dip
01:14 PM JT-Shop: busy starting a fire
01:15 PM roycroft: nickel dip is overkill
01:15 PM roycroft: it would add a lot of cost
01:15 PM XXCoder: true. well white powder would work I think
01:15 PM roycroft: i generated a quote on a sample that's similar to what i need at sendcutsend.com and the cost is <$7 each in quantity 10 ormore
01:15 PM roycroft: a nickel dip would probably double that cost
01:48 PM * CloudEvil ponders hot-dip nickel nickelisation.
01:48 PM CloudEvil: (not actually a thing)
01:49 PM CloudEvil: Would be fun to see though
01:50 PM XXCoder: could steel stand up to that?
01:54 PM CloudEvil: Well, your normal steels melt considerably below that, but might in thick section get a coating if quickly withdrawn before melting.
01:54 PM CloudEvil: Some more exotic grades of stainless are above
01:57 PM CloudEvil: ^moderately below that
02:22 PM Tom_L: blistering 48°F out 27°F by 7am tomorrow
02:24 PM JT-Shop: 48°F here too
02:29 PM Tom_L: is there a qttools6-dev-tools i should install to 'participate' with eme6?
02:29 PM Tom_L: or are you using qt5 with it
02:30 PM JT-Shop: I'm using qt5 tools, I ran into an issue with qt6 tools
02:30 PM JT-Shop: the result will be the same with either developer
02:30 PM Tom_L: i noticed 6 doesn't have a -dev-tools package in synaptic package manager yet
02:31 PM JT-Shop: it has a different name
02:31 PM JT-Shop: time to spoil the hens
02:47 PM Tom_L: you'd think they would at least keep the same naming convention
03:55 PM JT-Shop: I finally gave Foxy a bill for the double chucker the other day
03:55 PM JT-Shop: so no open jobs at the moment
04:21 PM Guest3: Good n
04:26 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, you should keep at least one going in case you get bored
04:28 PM JT-Shop: yup
04:30 PM JT-Shop: I'll give him a bit of time before seeing if he needs anything
04:33 PM Tom_L: i'm a little sad
04:33 PM JT-Shop: about?
04:33 PM Tom_L: briggs bought snapper and now i can't get a kawasaki engine replacement if i need one
04:33 PM Tom_L: they killed the brand and their engines just aren't as good
04:33 PM JT-Shop: really?
04:34 PM JT-Shop: I thought briggs was strapped
04:34 PM Tom_L: if they are, they're taking everyone else with em
04:34 PM JT-Shop: is kawasaki still making the engines
04:35 PM Tom_L: i've had that engine/mower for 30+ years and it still runs fine but i hit something the other day and now it's got a small vibration
04:35 PM Tom_L: i can't get an engine or a crank
04:35 PM JT-Shop: crank bent I'd bet
04:35 PM Tom_L: they still make engines but none that will fit that deck with clearance for the bag catcher
04:35 PM Tom_L: it's not bent very much at all but i think it is a little
04:36 PM Tom_L: i haven't put a dial on it yet but doubt there's much i could do anyway
04:36 PM JT-Shop: run out at the blade tips should give it away
04:36 PM Tom_L: right
04:36 PM JT-Shop: hammer time :)
04:36 PM Tom_L: i tossed the blade, i have several
04:36 PM Tom_L: it was pretty worn anyway
04:36 PM JT-Shop: you have a pretty small yard?
04:36 PM Tom_L: i don't see much runout just with the eye on a new blade
04:36 PM Tom_L: yeah not big
04:37 PM Tom_L: those kawasaki engines are hard to beat
04:37 PM JT-Shop: might be time for a DeWalt electric if they make one
04:38 PM Tom_L: last few weeks i've been baging leaves with it
04:38 PM Tom_L: i'd tear an electric up in a week i bet
04:38 PM JT-Shop: I blow the leaves up into a pile and wait for them to vanish
04:38 PM Tom_L: i blow into a pile and mulch them with the mower
04:40 PM Tom_L: i haven't found a mower that has the suction the snappers had
04:40 PM JT-Shop: I think that depends on the blade more than anything else
04:40 PM Tom_L: anyway, it still runs good i just wanted to have a plan
04:40 PM Tom_L: i add tips to the ends that helps alot
04:41 PM Tom_L: the engine was fitted with an oil filter which i don't think many if any briggs have
04:42 PM JT-Shop: some do but on a small engine it's not that effective
04:42 PM Tom_L: and i think it has a steel sleeve
04:42 PM Tom_L: or cast.. whatever
04:42 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: checked blade for balance? nick or something would create vibration
04:42 PM JT-Shop: briggs makes some with cast iron sleeves
04:43 PM Tom_L: it was a commercial unit at the time
04:43 PM Tom_L: i figure buy once instead of once every couple years
04:44 PM JT-Shop: my craftsman with a briggs that is 30 years old still runs...
04:44 PM Tom_L: i think i saw something about craftsman & snapper having something in common
04:44 PM Tom_L: as far as deck etc
04:52 PM JT-Shop: I used to think craftsman was sears but found out that they are separate
04:55 PM JT-Shop: briggs started building push mowers years ago and got spanked by the manufactures making mowers
04:55 PM XXCoder: man craftman used to be awesome
04:55 PM JT-Shop: I got one set of craftsman wrenches that are crap
04:56 PM JT-Shop: open end heads are huge
04:57 PM XXCoder: craftman tools from 20 years ago was excellent. current ones, in least last ones I saw before sears shut down, had no difference from china tools
04:59 PM JT-Shop: lowes carries craftsman now
04:59 PM JT-Shop: local sears shut down because they could no longer get any craftsman
05:01 PM roycroft: yeah, lowes here have craftsman, as well as jerry's (jerry's are a locally-owned big box home improvement store)
05:01 PM roycroft: and the old craftsman tools were not, imo, excellent, but they were good tools and an excellent value
05:02 PM roycroft: snap-on and proto always were better than craftsman, but for a non-professional the cost difference was hard to justify
05:04 PM JT-Shop: I never considered proto to be as high quality as snap-on
05:05 PM roycroft: no, but it's better than craftsman
05:05 PM XXCoder: yeah craftsman was great for home stuff
05:05 PM roycroft: an there are other premium, "professional" brands as well
05:05 PM XXCoder: pro not at all but yeah
05:06 PM roycroft: most of my wrenches and socket tools are craftsman
05:06 PM roycroft: i have a little snap-on
05:06 PM JT-Shop: IMHO older craftsman hand tools are very good quality
05:06 PM roycroft: many of them
05:07 PM JT-Shop: their saws and other power tools not so good
05:07 PM XXCoder: jt agreed
05:07 PM roycroft: some were cheap crap
05:07 PM roycroft: their hand planes, for example
05:07 PM roycroft: i have an old (1960s) craftsman no. 4 smoother that weighs about 1/2 as much as a stanley bedrock
05:07 PM JT-Shop: sockets and wrenches are the only good quality tools they had
05:07 PM roycroft: and has a blade that's more like sheet metal than steel plate
05:08 PM roycroft: i've had other craftsman planes that are just as crappy
05:08 PM roycroft: but their wrenches and socket tools are very good
05:08 PM JT-Shop: the other tools I had from craftsman I called crapsman
05:08 PM XXCoder: lol
05:08 PM roycroft: their "professional" line screwdrivers used to be good, but those went downhill a long time ago
05:09 PM roycroft: for electrical work i use klein and greenlee screwdrivers exclusively
05:09 PM roycroft: for mechanic/general work i mostly use snap-on these days
05:09 PM roycroft: for fine work i use wiha
05:18 PM CaptHindsight: how about Stanley as the top shelf option? Stanley or worse
05:20 PM Tom_L: ace carry craftsman too
05:20 PM CaptHindsight: and Lowe's
05:21 PM CaptHindsight: they swapped my 50 year old socket wrenches for new
05:21 PM CaptHindsight: but the ACE around here have a limited selection of craftsman tools
05:21 PM Tom_L: i used to get snapon but finding a truck got to be a problem so what few things were usually craftsman
05:22 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight, yeah just ones that sell good
05:22 PM CaptHindsight: oh just call snapon, they will show up next day and offer you all sorts or credit :)
05:23 PM Tom_L: that's for sure
05:23 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.lowes.com/pd/CRAFTSMAN/5013302107 100 pieces are just tool tips
05:24 PM CaptHindsight: snapon 1/4" socket set $12,000
05:24 PM XXCoder: I just hope snapon will not cheapen quality ever
05:25 PM Tom_L: they certainly haven't cheapened their price
05:27 PM CaptHindsight: https://shop.snapon.com/categories/Quick-Release-Ratchet-(1-2%22)/683068 oh buy online now
05:27 PM XXCoder: 210 for ratchet
05:27 PM XXCoder: usd. too much for me lol
05:28 PM CaptHindsight: https://shop.snapon.com/categories/Short-Handle%2C-inches-(Spline-Combination)/675059 $55 per wrench ahahahaha
05:30 PM CaptHindsight: https://shop.snapon.com/categories/CT9050-Series-18-V-1-2%22-Drive-Cordless-Impact-Wrench/888433 $998 for a cordless impact wrench
05:30 PM CaptHindsight: and they only want to pay mechanics $30/hour
05:31 PM CaptHindsight: work all week to buy a cordless tool
05:31 PM Tom_L: let the babies starve
05:31 PM CaptHindsight: they can get their own tools
05:31 PM CaptHindsight: babies
05:33 PM JT-Shop: but they charge $150 or more an hour for their work
05:34 PM JT-Shop: better job to put wheels on a Cadillac for uaw stealership wages
05:35 PM Tom_L: you probably have to start on the buick line and hope one day you get to the Cadillac line
05:36 PM JT-Shop: it's just one part at a time
05:37 PM Tom_L: wonder thru the years how many cars have been built at home
05:37 PM JT-Shop: buick's are only made in china
05:37 PM Tom_L: kinda hard to fit a body pannel in a lunch pail though
05:38 PM JT-Shop: gotta sneak it out in your buddys motor home
05:38 PM Tom_L: like the guy riding his bike across the border and walking home?
05:39 PM JT-Shop: at the ship yard I worked at a supervisor was building a shrimp boat one part at a time buy using the crane with the magnetic thing to move steel over the fence
05:39 PM CaptHindsight: I'd rather have UAW workers make $100k/year and have cars that last 30 years so that we can spend time and resources on more important things
05:39 PM Tom_L: heh
05:40 PM JT-Shop: shipyard had that too a clean up guy was stealing rakes and shovels and wheelbarrows to clean the parking lot
05:40 PM CaptHindsight: sounds like the bicycle smugglers
05:40 PM XXCoder: cleaning out while cleaning up
05:41 PM JT-Shop: if the uaw workers had a skill that demanded that I'm all for it but screwing wheels on a Cadillac doesn't take much skill or training
05:42 PM CaptHindsight: same for CEO
05:43 PM JT-Shop: well the CEO does have a lot more responsibly than screwing wheels on
05:43 PM CaptHindsight: now way they have 1000x the skills
05:43 PM CaptHindsight: get the wheels on wrong and the cars don't move :)
05:43 PM XXCoder: I wish theres cap on highest income on top vs lowest paid
05:43 PM XXCoder: like 100x times max
05:44 PM XXCoder: ceo want a rise? rise lowest
06:32 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/Ujw3eAtRYSE
06:32 PM XXCoder: pretty interesting
07:41 PM bjork1intosh: thanks XXCoder.
07:42 PM XXCoder: welcome. hope you enjoyed it
08:06 PM bjork1intosh: wish I had a shop to fool around in.
08:10 PM XXCoder: me too lol
08:11 PM roycroft: fooling around is overrated, unless it's with a pretty girl
08:44 PM bjorkintosh: roycroft, or a shop, once you get married to said subject of foolery.
08:45 PM roycroft: but that's not fun at at that point
08:45 PM roycroft: it's just an escape
08:45 PM bjorkintosh: :-)
08:48 PM * roycroft wonders if the mail is ever going to arrive today
08:52 PM CaptHindsight: my stubby screw drivers turned up, thanks for looking
08:54 PM CaptHindsight: ever have someone tell you something they think is very insightful to having a lasting marriage or relationship but it just makes them sound nuts or in a toxic relationship?
08:55 PM XXCoder: dunno, I dont ask for relationship advice :D
08:55 PM XXCoder: yeah dunno why that you always find it at last place you look at ;)
08:55 PM CaptHindsight: these are usually unsolicited to make the matter even worse
08:55 PM CaptHindsight: like they are a wise old sage but in reality far from it
08:55 PM Tom_L: they're either going thru it the first time and winging it or they're going thru it another time because they failed
08:57 PM XXCoder: its interesting to see some people say they support "traditional family" when they remarry for 6th time
08:57 PM Tom_L: either of which i don't need advice from
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: "I'm a terrible mind reader"..... "then you must not be married" was my recent favorite
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: run, just run
09:00 PM XXCoder: my bro married young, but theyre still together
09:00 PM XXCoder: something like 30 years now
09:02 PM CaptHindsight: he choose wisely
09:17 PM bjorkintosh: he was wisely chosen.
09:20 PM roycroft: wisdom is relative
09:22 PM CaptHindsight: have you met my relatives?
09:22 PM XXCoder: nope
09:22 PM CaptHindsight: wise not to :)
09:25 PM roycroft: i hope they're not coming over for thanksgiving
09:25 PM roycroft: especially drunk uncle
09:25 PM XXCoder: im uncle lol thankfully not that horrible uncle type
09:27 PM roycroft: the mail finally arrived
09:28 PM CaptHindsight: \0/
09:29 PM XXCoder: 🎉
09:38 PM roycroft: i have several overdue parcels that just arrived
09:38 PM roycroft: overdue because of creative usps routing
09:46 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hwy8SzVmWGc I've seen the originals. Almost eerie to see it cleaned up and with the motion slightly slowed
09:54 PM bjorkintosh: hmm. no speech at all.
09:54 PM XXCoder: predates audio combo I think
09:55 PM bjorkintosh: nah this was '45.
09:55 PM bjorkintosh: they already had computers.
09:55 PM bjorkintosh: 2, sure.
09:55 PM XXCoder: combo as in single camera to record both at once
09:55 PM bjorkintosh: hmm. I see.
09:56 PM XXCoder: 1970s home cameras has record and had audio
09:56 PM XXCoder: professonal level dunno
09:57 PM XXCoder: 1935 first one in world
09:57 PM bjorkintosh: first talkie was in '27 or '29. and they had audio recorders by '45.
09:57 PM XXCoder: I guess I misremembered
09:57 PM bjorkintosh: they just left the audio guy at home that day.
10:07 PM * roycroft gives xxcoder some memberberries
10:07 PM CaptHindsight: some parts have audio with vehicles passing by, no voice
10:07 PM XXCoder: lol roy
