01:48 AM Getty9 is now known as Getty
04:14 AM Tom_L: morning
04:54 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:43 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
07:42 AM JT-Cave: finally a clue
07:44 AM Tom_L: to what?
08:19 AM JT-Shop: to why the joints don't update correctly
08:22 AM Tom_L: random issue?
08:22 AM JT-Cave: [74, 109] 74 109
08:22 AM JT-Cave: JOINT_0: HOME_IGNORE_LIMITS = False 106 HOME_IGNORE_LIMITS = False
08:22 AM JT-Cave: [116, 151] 116 151
08:22 AM JT-Cave: JOINT_1: HOME_IGNORE_LIMITS = False 106 HOME_IGNORE_LIMITS = False
08:22 AM JT-Cave: [158, 193] 158 193
08:22 AM JT-Cave: JOINT_2: HOME_IGNORE_LIMITS = True 190 HOME_IGNORE_LIMITS = True
08:23 AM JT-Cave: the center number should be within the range above it and the middle one is not
08:24 AM JT-Cave: the center number after the true/false is the line in the file that gets replaced
08:25 AM Tom_L: so those are line numbers
08:29 AM JT-Cave: yup the first pair is the start and end of the section
08:29 AM Tom_L: figured that
08:29 AM travis_farmer: Morning :-)
08:30 AM Tom_L: i've ended up printing pages of code and taping them together to find what wasn't obvious on an 80 line screen
08:31 AM JT-Cave: I figured it out I think
08:31 AM JT-Cave: I wallpapered a wall once with a spreadsheet
08:31 AM * Tom_L eats another peppernut
08:33 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer (@_discord_731083529441640538:jauriarts.org)> is the Discord <--> IRC bridge working again? (both ways?)
08:33 AM travis_farmer: cool
08:34 AM Tom_L: to an extent
08:35 AM travis_farmer: yeah, looks a little screwey on the Discord side ;-)
08:36 AM travis_farmer: i have been away for a spell, dealing with some things. thought i would check in :-)
08:40 AM JT-Cave: I GOT IT!!!
08:40 AM JT-Cave: index = self.content.index(item, start)
08:40 AM JT-Cave: I had to add the start position of the search for index
08:42 AM Tom_L: has to be the start of the section
08:43 AM Tom_L: if the range is 1-3 2 has to be in the middle
08:44 AM Tom_L: 9-11 10 must be there
08:45 AM Tom_L: it's all that jibberish python that gets me
08:47 AM travis_farmer: i like C/C++ ;-)
09:08 AM Tom_L: the fact that joint0 & joint1 returned the same line number was a clue
09:17 AM JT-Cave: yup
09:18 AM JT-Cave: index(item, start, end) where start and end are optional and I forgot to tell it where to start searching at
09:19 AM JT-Cave: so searching from the beginning of the file it finds the first item every time
09:19 AM JT-Cave: if you think that's jibberish try tcl
09:19 AM Tom_L: no thanks
09:20 AM Tom_L: i tried learning oops once and just gave up
09:20 AM Tom_L: too much inheritance etc for me
09:21 AM JT-Cave: hmm I need to put the end in as well so if it's not in the section add it
09:35 AM JT-Cave: that's a pretty big bug fix I think I'll bump the version up
09:40 AM * JT-Cave goes back to cleaning chicken shit
09:44 AM Tom_L: ready to build?
09:54 AM Tom_L: PR #48 ready
10:08 AM JT-Cave: thanks
10:16 AM Roguish: good morning. well finally got some rain. .4 inchs woopee
10:29 AM lcnc-relay: <flatblackdime#0> I'm about to get a non-running 'american way' lathe and would like to retrofit it. Anyone here have any knowledge or experience with these lathes?
10:30 AM Tom_L: https://unimachines.com/cnc-lathe-american-way-aw-100-1995-8781.html
10:31 AM CaptHindsight: shouldn't bee too difficult to figure out
10:32 AM CaptHindsight: https://unimachines.com/img/8781/american-way-aw-100-2.jpg
10:33 AM lcnc-relay: <flatblackdime#0> I've found all that stuff already, really curious what they used for servos
10:33 AM lcnc-relay: <flatblackdime#0> This one has a turret, not gang tooling
10:33 AM CaptHindsight: how much help do you need?
10:34 AM CaptHindsight: have you looked at what type of spindle motor is used?
10:34 AM CaptHindsight: what type of motors are used for the cross slide?
10:36 AM Deejay: moin
10:46 AM CaptHindsight: flatblackdime ^^^
10:47 AM * JT-Shop hears a nap calling his name
10:50 AM pcw-home: Roguish maybe 0.75" here Hoping it's enough to get the weeds growing so we don't need to buy anymore hay this year
10:53 AM CaptHindsight: pcw-home: how much is hay in bulk? I noticed tiny small bails at the stores around Halloween for $10ea
10:54 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.partycity.com/bale-of-straw-797245.html
10:54 AM Tom_L: are they fire treated though?
10:54 AM CaptHindsight: oh yeah they burn great!
10:54 AM Tom_L: hah
10:55 AM pcw-home: Much more here, about ~25 a bale for three-way (we could drive further and get cheaper but this is at the local feed store) Straw is cheaper
10:56 AM Tom_L: do you get good alfalfa hay out there?
10:57 AM pcw-home: We used to be just about balanced with sheep/land but inherited some sheep a friend couldn't care for anymore
10:57 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/catalog/hay 40-50lb bails vs the 1lb
10:58 AM pcw-home: Alfalfa is pretty rich for sheep, they seem to do OK on close to pure cellulose :-)
10:58 AM CaptHindsight: isn't that how you end up with 20+ sheep? :)
10:59 AM pcw-home: Yeah, these were pets they couldn't seen to the freezer
10:59 AM pcw-home: s/seen/send
11:00 AM bjorkintosh: https://www.zmescience.com/science/news-science/3d-printing-metals-just-got-good-enough-to-be-used-in-jets/
11:01 AM CaptHindsight: are your electronic parts any easier to get recently?
11:02 AM pcw-home: Yes for most things, OPTOs are still an issue
11:02 AM CaptHindsight: bjorkintosh: parts like those have been cast using 3d printed molds
11:02 AM pcw-home: (we've had some on order since June 2022
11:03 AM CaptHindsight: optos, common good ones that everyone wants
11:03 AM pcw-home: Yep
11:03 AM CaptHindsight: easy to find the low speed Chinese versions
11:06 AM CaptHindsight: bjorkintosh: the creep and single crystal issues are well understood, MIT is just doing the obvious
11:07 AM CaptHindsight: every poop by MIT is closely examined by their PR team where a story like this one follows
11:12 AM bjorkintosh: huh
11:12 AM bjorkintosh: you don't think it's viable?
11:15 AM CaptHindsight: it's viable and it's obvious
11:16 AM CaptHindsight: it's like having a story about how they have a pile of lumber and some nails but the rocks they currently use to press the nails into the lumber keep breaking
11:16 AM bjorkintosh: bigger hammer.
11:16 AM CaptHindsight: so they put their heads together and came up with better rocks
11:17 AM bjorkintosh: this is a Good Thing(tm)
11:17 AM Roguish: pcw-home, rain has been really spotty. nothing like what was forecasted.
11:19 AM pcw-home: Yeah a bit disappointing, a week or so ago more than an inch was predicted
11:22 AM Roguish: pcw-home, this is the best for weather https://www.windy.com/?37.988,-122.153,4,i:pressure
11:24 AM Roguish: and to look around the bay: http://www.rntl.net/san-francisco-windsurfing-cams/
11:29 AM CaptHindsight: bjorkintosh: sure it's a good thing but it's obvious. Like putting i- before just about anything and applying for a patent.
11:29 AM pcw-home: We had almost a thundershower yesterday but it only lasted a few minutes
11:30 AM CaptHindsight: there are a few turbine files that have been passed around for 10 years that everyone is trying to corner the market on using additive
11:33 AM CaptHindsight: and of course: Zachary Cordero reports a relationship with Top Grain Technologies, Inc. that includes: equity or stocks. Zachary Cordero has patent "Directional recrystallization processing of additively manufactured metal alloys" pending to USPTO.
11:34 AM CaptHindsight: so if he is too greedy and controlling everyone will avoid this method until the patent expires
12:17 PM Tom_L: what happened to earning money the old fashioned way?? .... stealing it
12:42 PM CaptHindsight: that is only for the wealthy and those above the law, and you have to only steal from the poor or you still might get into trouble like Bankman-Fried
12:46 PM bjorkintosh: the bank man won't fry for long.
12:46 PM bjorkintosh: his parents won't let it happen.
12:48 PM CaptHindsight: sentencing is next spring, so most will have forgotten about it by then
12:49 PM CaptHindsight: "He was allowed to remain free on a $250 million bond, the largest such bond ever set in an American criminal proceeding"
12:49 PM Unterhausen: fine woodworking published a picture of a guy hitting a drillbit with a hammer
12:50 PM Tom_L: isn't that what you're supposed to do?
12:51 PM Unterhausen: yes, also hold the soldering iron by the hot end
12:51 PM Tom_L: so how do you know that's a bad idea unless you've tried it????
12:53 PM CaptHindsight: how about hammering a soldering iron?
12:53 PM CaptHindsight: how else to handle cold solder
01:41 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcoder> yes, but then no. we are using different bridge. one that dont use the still disabled services on irc to have seperate nicks and so on.
01:42 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcoder> but yes people on irc matrix and discord can chat again and thats what matters the most.
01:55 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> xxcoder cool
02:39 PM XXCoder: pretty cool video today by artisn makes
02:59 PM * roycroft thinks he just found an easy fix to his lathe problem
02:59 PM roycroft: i'll be testing after lunch
03:02 PM roycroft: the slideway wear issue is not an easy fix, but it's something i can work around
03:26 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, how did you come across that joint error? that seems like a tricky one to locate
04:19 PM JT-Shop: quite tricky but using deduction in the end you find the source
05:03 PM roycroft: yay! the lathe is fixed!
05:03 PM roycroft: and it was a five minute job
05:04 PM JT-Shop: what was broken?
05:04 PM roycroft: it kept popping out of gear
05:04 PM roycroft: there's a pin that holds the back gear drive section to the main drive section
05:04 PM roycroft: you pull the pin out when you want to use the back gear
05:04 PM roycroft: and it's held in by a spring when you use the regular gears
05:05 PM roycroft: but it kept popping out, and i discovered that there's a bushing that holds the pulleys in place that had slipped, and its set screw had gone missing
05:05 PM roycroft: i slid the bushing back over and installed a new set screw, and now it works normally
05:06 PM JT-Shop: I got the flat fixed at Discount Tire today so I'll put it back on tomorrow
05:06 PM roycroft: i thought the pin had worn and actually ordered a new one a long time ago
05:06 PM JT-Shop: only 150 mile round trip
05:06 PM roycroft: but replacing that pin would require completely disassembling the spindle, which is why i've put it off
05:06 PM XXCoder: awesome new blondihack project
05:06 PM roycroft: that's a long drive for fixing a flat
05:07 PM JT-Shop: well also we had a really good meal at 12 West
05:07 PM Tom_L: flat on what?
05:07 PM * roycroft is now trying to get his new carbide insert tool to cut well
05:07 PM Tom_L: got the tooling in ehh
05:07 PM roycroft: i'm making nice blue chips, but they're really long
05:07 PM roycroft: and the finish is not as nice as i'd like
05:07 PM roycroft: yes, the tooling arrived
05:07 PM roycroft: and now that the lathe is fixed i can actually use it
05:08 PM JT-Shop: blue is not good
05:08 PM Tom_L: right coating for what you're cutting?
05:08 PM roycroft: blue chips are perfect
05:08 PM roycroft: blue parts are not
05:08 PM Tom_L: and blue is pretty (ask JT) but not on chips
05:08 PM roycroft: at least that's what i'm told about carbide tooling
05:08 PM roycroft: that if the chips are blue, they're absorbing all the heat
05:08 PM JT-Shop: blue is a bit too hot for chips
05:09 PM Tom_L: i have however seen steel chips flying off white hot and the finish was good
05:09 PM JT-Shop: a light blue hue is good, your pulling out the heat
05:09 PM roycroft: well i'm not getting good chip breaking nor a good finish at this point
05:09 PM roycroft: i'll see if i can keep the blue down
05:09 PM roycroft: but i'm still working out feeds/seeds/depth of cut
05:09 PM JT-Shop: slow down SFM or SMM for you or increase DOC
05:10 PM roycroft: i'm working on a part that is made out of 2-1/4" mild steel
05:10 PM roycroft: i need to turn one end down to 3/4"
05:10 PM roycroft: so i have plenty of passes to dial things in
05:10 PM * JT-Shop goes to tuck the hens in and read them a bed time story
05:11 PM roycroft: tell them to be grateful that turkey is standard thanksgiving fare in this country, and not chicken
05:17 PM JT-Shop: they are not worried at all about that only when the next snack will arrive
05:32 PM Tom_L: been feedin em too much crack
05:32 PM JT-Shop: chicken crack is good
05:32 PM Tom_L: but they expect it now ehh?
05:33 PM JT-Shop: well they have it down pat what to do when I come out with it
05:34 PM Tom_L: i bet
05:34 PM bjorkintosh: tell them about Chicken Little!
05:35 PM JT-Shop: they know the story well
05:36 PM bjorkintosh: good.
