12:17 AM lcnc-relay: <xxcoder> reinvented to be far crappier
12:29 AM XXCoder: bah seems relay dont send picture links lol
12:29 AM XXCoder: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/970073318810075149/1172418909736022117/image.png?ex=65603f32&is=654dca32&hm=b055fc5e22617f93c747a0181f97cdf88e3d12426014c3e85038f31768a32c83&=&width=996&height=664

04:11 AM Tom_L: morning
04:58 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:59 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:34 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
06:40 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as unterhausen
07:43 AM Tom_L: 37°F hi 60°F
08:06 AM JT-Cave: a tad warmer here
08:06 AM JT-Cave: pull and test :)
08:10 AM Tom_L: cool
08:12 AM Tom_L: i also like the calc
08:22 AM Tom_L: calc info: add "./n" after For no Microsteps leave blank
08:30 AM JT-Shop_: I did that and it was too tall but looks like I can make the bottom boxes a tad taller
08:30 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:31 AM Tom_L: or move them all together like on the IP test stuff
08:39 AM JT-Cave: might make more sense to be on the main board page???
08:42 AM Tom_L: where it shows the joints etc?
08:43 AM Tom_L: i think it's ok where it is
08:43 AM Tom_L: if it's on the board page it would only show after selecting a board
08:44 AM Tom_L: it _is_ part of the ini 'settings'
08:45 AM Tom_L: either one is ok
08:46 AM JT-Cave: it's part of the joint settings
08:46 AM Tom_L: yeah
08:46 AM Tom_L: i would bold the 'Scale Calculator'
08:46 AM JT-Cave: correct, and you don't need it until you select a board unless you run the tool just to use that...
08:46 AM Tom_L: well maybe not since it's a tab
08:46 AM JT-Cave: did you pull
08:47 AM Tom_L: not after the ip fix
08:48 AM Tom_L: yeah that works
08:49 AM Tom_L: i'd put it in a bounding box with a header like the rest of the 'settings'
08:49 AM Tom_L: that's neither here or there though
08:51 AM JT-Cave: hmm I can add a Copy To: button with a combobox of any axis/joint that has an axis selected
08:51 AM Tom_L: yeah
08:52 AM JT-Cave: hmm the tab widget inside of a group box might look odd... I'll have to see
08:52 AM Tom_L: yeah i see what you mean now
08:53 AM Tom_L: you have room there now to put the info on the same page
08:53 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/jauriarts.org/lYGDtpklSwWTLyboZbNORcFN
08:54 AM Tom_L: like you did on the IP stuff
08:55 AM JT-Cave: look and see now
08:55 AM Tom_L: bounding box label: 'Scale parameters'
08:57 AM Tom_L: that looks ok but i'd lose the tabs and put the info below the parameters on the same page
08:57 AM Tom_L: i think...
08:58 AM Tom_L: makes it more uniform to the IP stuff
09:06 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, on the Firmware tab 'mesaflash' you put the instructional box beside the selections
09:07 AM Tom_L: any number of ways to do it...
09:20 AM * JT-Shop heads to town
09:42 AM roycroft: tom_l: you recommend i not use square inserts yesterday
09:42 AM roycroft: why is that?
09:43 AM roycroft: i found an insert holder that uses square inserts, but holds them at a 45 degree angle, so the tool can be used for facing and chamfering both
09:44 AM Tom_L: i'm not sure i recomended against that but most of your lathe tools are either triangle or diamond for tighter access
09:44 AM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/325721753947
09:44 AM Tom_L: you get 4 edges to break
09:44 AM roycroft: yes
09:45 AM roycroft: and i get it about tighter access
09:45 AM roycroft: maybe this would be a good first tool holder, though
09:45 AM Tom_L: ^^ that one would be ok for facing and large material removal
09:45 AM roycroft: and i could get a diamond or triangular one later, and use the first one strictly or chamfering
09:45 AM Tom_L: that shars set didn't look bad to me
09:45 AM Tom_L: but get better inserts for them
09:46 AM roycroft: or mount it in line with the z and us it for end facing and chamfering
09:48 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> test https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/970073318810075149/1172418909736022117/image.png?ex=65603f32&is=654dca32&hm=b055fc5e22617f93c747a0181f97cdf88e3d12426014c3e85038f31768a32c83&=&width=1020&height=680
09:50 AM Tom_L: stopping just before the ? works too :)
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> what tom said 👍
09:51 AM * roycroft seconds that
09:51 AM Tom_L: at least it wasn't one that was 2 pages long
09:52 AM CaptHindsight: images posted directly to Discord don't make it across the bridge, you have to post a link
09:52 AM Tom_L: i saw that
09:52 AM roycroft: i've been reading that many of the import tool holders have sloppy threads, and the inserts are not held tightly enough
09:52 AM roycroft: causing chatter and other issues
09:53 AM * roycroft uses a curses-base irc client and doesn't understand how a picture could post to his client in the first place
09:53 AM lcnc-relay: <CaptHindsight> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/IVIeYagMSJfVpoSktkAvnbEw
09:53 AM roycroft: perhaps that's why the bridge doesn't transfer images
09:54 AM CaptHindsight: but it works when posted to Matrix
09:54 AM CaptHindsight: just not directly to Discord
09:55 AM roycroft: i've decided i want a tool that takes trigon inserts
09:55 AM roycroft: but i can't fine on in 1/2"
09:55 AM roycroft: find
09:55 AM roycroft: that is not an import
09:55 AM roycroft: i guess 'merucans like big tools
09:56 AM CaptHindsight: about half of them are
10:01 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> I had an import trigon high feed mill and had the insert screws come out when it was cutting. Rather exciting.
10:02 AM CaptHindsight: did they miss you?
10:02 AM CaptHindsight: stuff like that usually turns up when you move a machine
10:03 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> Missed me but having the tool body become the cutter at 120ipm made a noise and just about friction welded it to the work.
10:03 AM CaptHindsight: that is how you find 10mm sockets :)
10:03 AM roycroft: so if i go with an imported tool, this one is intereting:
10:03 AM roycroft: https://www.shars.com/1-2-rh-mwln-tri-lock-tool-holder
10:03 AM Tom_L: roycroft, what made you decide to want Trigon inserts?
10:04 AM roycroft: it has a -5 degree side angle, so i can use straight inserts and get six edges from an insert
10:04 AM Tom_L: shars has a whole set
10:04 AM Tom_L: if you chip an insert alot of times the bottom one isn't gonna be good for very long
10:05 AM roycroft: tom_l: it looks like a good compromise between strength and ability to get in tight spaces, plus it's wide enough near the nose that there's room for two chipbreakers
10:07 AM Tom_L: https://www.carbidedepot.com/
10:07 AM roycroft: zincboy_ca_on: that's an exciting story, indeed, but i think the "import" part of that is more important than the "trigon" part when it comes to determining why the sscres came out
10:08 AM roycroft: it could have just been operator error, of course
10:08 AM Tom_L: https://www.carbidedepot.com/Toolholders
10:09 AM lcnc-relay: <CaptHindsight> https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/EqaGGLTTAjqXVlVoDVjOXceH
10:09 AM CaptHindsight: Shars 404-1052 ^^
10:10 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.shars.com/1-2-indexable-carbide-turning-tool-set-1
10:10 AM roycroft: i looked there yesterday, tom_l, and while the page isn't loading for me again now, iirc there were few, if any, 1/2" toolholders
10:10 AM roycroft: they started at 5/8"
10:10 AM Tom_L: ^^
10:10 AM roycroft: and i know i can mill one down to 1/2"
10:10 AM Tom_L: i found a 1/2" one
10:11 AM roycroft: their website doesn't let one sort on size
10:11 AM roycroft: just on insert type/shape
10:11 AM roycroft: and clamping method
10:11 AM Tom_L: https://www.shars.com/1-2-indexable-carbide-turning-tool-set-1-1-1
10:12 AM CaptHindsight: ^ set replaced the one I posted
10:12 AM roycroft: i think if i'm going to get imported tool holders especially i'll want to start with a single tool holder and see how i like it
10:12 AM roycroft: vs a set
10:13 AM CaptHindsight: i use the good brand inserts in mine
10:13 AM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Indexable-Turning-Carbide-Grooving-Threading/dp/B09CHDVNZ3?th=1
10:13 AM Tom_L: another 'cheap' set
10:13 AM roycroft: yes, i would use high quality inserts
10:13 AM Tom_L: note the center one isn't 1/2"
10:13 AM roycroft: if i move to carbide insert tooling i want to be happy with the choice
10:13 AM roycroft: if i buy cheap tool holders with cheap inserts i'll likely not be happy
10:14 AM Tom_L: you don't necessarily need name brand $$$ to be happy
10:14 AM Tom_L: just when it comes to inserts
10:14 AM CaptHindsight: I'll sell you my old set
10:14 AM Tom_L: after all it's BOA's money.. spend it how you wish :)
10:15 AM roycroft: so are the ones with the screw in the center of the insert and the clamp on the end that much better than either a single screw or a single clamp?
10:15 AM roycroft: i.e. is the insert held significantly more rigidly when it's clamped twice like that?
10:15 AM CaptHindsight: I've never had one of these come loose
10:15 AM Tom_L: i haven't used enough of them to tell you
10:16 AM Tom_L: but i haven't lost an insert due to clamping yet
10:16 AM CaptHindsight: the body of the holder should provide the support
10:16 AM roycroft: sure, but the insert can wiggle around a bit if it's not clamped firmly, no?
10:16 AM CaptHindsight: if the set screw is doing any work then it's made wrong
10:17 AM roycroft: especially if it's an imported tool holder, made to sloppy tolerances
10:17 AM Tom_L: unless you're gonna be doing production i don't think you need to worry about that that much
10:17 AM CaptHindsight: with Chinese it's partially luck since they lack QC
10:17 AM roycroft: note that the first clause does not necessarily imply the second clause
10:17 AM CaptHindsight: I got a lucky good set
10:18 AM CaptHindsight: I have also gotten R8 tools from Shars that were out of round or similar, Why I pick-up in person
10:19 AM CaptHindsight: same with surface plates
10:19 AM roycroft: i can't pick things up from shars directly, as we've discussed before
10:19 AM roycroft: and i'm still pissed of at them, although i could get over that
10:19 AM Tom_L: but you know somebody that can :)
10:20 AM CaptHindsight: you probably won't have that experience if you order from Travers or similar
10:22 AM roycroft: and regarding using the underside edge if an insert is chipped
10:23 AM roycroft: i should hope that if i'm doing a good job operating the machine that i'll wear out edges more frequently than i chip them, negating that as a problem
10:23 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.shars.com/1-2-rh-mwln-tri-lock-tool-holder the downside with these is getting into tighter spaces
10:23 AM roycroft: and if an edge does get chipped i can assume that the underside edge is useless or mostly useless
10:23 AM roycroft: but i still get 3+ edges per insert
10:25 AM roycroft: yes, i get that, capthindsight
10:25 AM roycroft: but i have other tooling for getting into tight spaces
10:25 AM Tom_L: diamond, you get 4 max but can get into tighter spaces and generally taking lighter cuts with them
10:25 AM roycroft: a trigon would let me cut to a shoulder just fine
10:25 AM roycroft: i'm also not looking for one tool to do everything
10:25 AM Tom_L: you can't
10:25 AM roycroft: the "q" in qctp stands for "quick", after all :)
10:26 AM roycroft: i'm looking for one tool to start with and see if i want to move to carbide insert tooling
10:27 AM roycroft: and i'll probably still want to keep my hss tooling for doing light finish passes and similar things
10:27 AM Tom_L: back when i was turning test specimens from squares we beat the crap out of inserts and they held up
10:27 AM CaptHindsight: just don't get too greedy
10:28 AM Tom_L: those were square inserts too
10:29 AM CaptHindsight: well let's think about this for another day or so then come back and rehash this another time or so
10:29 AM CaptHindsight: change my mind
10:29 AM Tom_L: may as well
10:30 AM * roycroft is likely to order something today when he finds the time to do so
10:31 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.victornet.com/subdepartments/Tool-Holders---Indexable-Turning/1940.html
10:31 AM roycroft: i have a chunk of 2-1/4" round bar in the lathe right now that needs to be smaller, and i chipped a brazed carbide insert a couple days ago and made a mess
10:32 AM roycroft: it would be a good project to finish up with a new tool holder
10:32 AM roycroft: i have to turn part of it down to 3/4"
10:32 AM Tom_L: no time like the present then
10:32 AM roycroft: i've bought from victor before
10:33 AM roycroft: tom_l: that job calls for some heavy cuts if i don't want it to take the rest of my life
10:33 AM roycroft: it's perfect for testing carbide tooling
10:33 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.kbctools.com/catsearch/1504/indexable-turning-toolholder-sets
10:33 AM Tom_L: whatever the lathe motor can take
10:33 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.micro100.com/products/turning
10:34 AM CaptHindsight: the harvey / micro 100 stuff is nice
10:34 AM Tom_L: harvey are good
10:35 AM Tom_L: like buying a set of cooper tires vs goodyear/mischelin
10:35 AM CaptHindsight: Toyo?
10:35 AM Tom_L: well ok
10:40 AM roycroft: so what brand inserts do folks like?
10:40 AM CaptHindsight: Iscar, Sandvik Coromant, Kennametal etc
10:40 AM Tom_L: same
10:41 AM CaptHindsight: I look for bulk lots on ebay
10:41 AM CaptHindsight: NOS vs used
10:41 AM roycroft: yeah, i'll do that
10:41 AM roycroft: i found a good deal on that shars tool holder, and i'm willing to give it a go
10:42 AM roycroft: like with most tools, the consumables are almost the entire cost in the end
10:42 AM roycroft: so if the tool holder turns out to be lousy, i can always replace it with a better one
10:44 AM Tom_L: you _could_ add Walter Valenite to that list
10:45 AM bjorkintosh: https://vimeo.com/882968794 humane ai
10:51 AM roycroft: so finding trigon inserts in the size i need is a bit problematic
10:51 AM roycroft: that may be an argument for using a different profile
10:53 AM Tom_L: that's when you call your tool supplier and have them find you some :)
10:53 AM roycroft: yay! my tax refund was mailed yesterday
10:54 AM roycroft: now i don't have to worry about it being held up if the government shuts down next week
10:57 AM roycroft: i can find them if i want to pay full retail
10:57 AM roycroft: i'm looking for ebay specials
11:44 AM JT-Shop: roycroft, examine any used holders carefully for damage where the insert goes
11:44 AM JT-Shop: any damage at all and all you will do is break inserts
11:46 AM JT-Shop: battery and multi-function lens will be here monday
11:46 AM * JT-Shop hears a nap calling his name
11:51 AM roycroft: thanks
11:51 AM roycroft: i'll watch for that
11:51 AM roycroft: i've seen several that are beaten up
11:52 AM roycroft: the nose of the tool holder, especially
12:55 PM andypugh: Trigons have the theoretical advantage of having 6 cutting tips. But I generally manage to wipe out all 6 at once.
12:59 PM roycroft: it's kind of moot, as i'm having trouble finding high quality trigon inserts in the size i need
12:59 PM roycroft: which is too bad, because i like the geometry (in theory) of the inserts
01:00 PM roycroft: not being an expert or even pretending to know much at all about insert tooling, trigons appear to me to have some advantages over other inserts for facing operations
01:01 PM roycroft: they have an 80 degree include angle, which should make them fairly strong, yet allow clearance for working up to shoulders
01:02 PM roycroft: the large included angle also allows for putting a chip breaker on each side of the nose, which seems it would make for more effetive chep breaking than a single breaker directly behind the nose
01:02 PM roycroft: being able to use both sides in some circumstances is an added bonus, but i was mainly looking at the features above
01:03 PM roycroft: a disadvantage is that they don't seem as popular as some other geometries, and are therefore harder to find, especially on the surplus market
01:04 PM roycroft: given the cost of quality inserts, that disadvantage might more than offset the advantages
01:06 PM andypugh: Just realised that my own milling machine is running LinuxCNC 2.8.4 on Debian Wheezy and the 3.4.55 RTAI kernel.
01:06 PM XXCoder: yeah definitely good to check out tooling costs and aviliability
01:06 PM XXCoder: no point to have holder with no tooling for it
01:06 PM andypugh: What is it that they say about the shoemakers shoes?
01:07 PM roycroft: if it still works, and it's not on the internet, it's probably fine
01:15 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: there is some guy that just made new LCNC installer, it even updates Debian
01:16 PM andypugh: Rod?
01:18 PM CaptHindsight: or for something completely different https://openlunchbox.com/mw19/index.php/HOWTO:_Gentoo_for_LinuxCNC
01:26 PM roycroft: do you have an opinion that you're willing to share on chinese import insert tool holders vs. domestic (usa made here) ones, andypugh?
01:27 PM roycroft: i know to get high quality inserts
01:28 PM andypugh: I tend to get what are probably chinese tooling from a UK supplier. The price is right and the delivery is faster: www.shop-apt.co.uk
01:30 PM roycroft: i'm thinking that if i get an imported tool holder and the set/clamp screw(s) fit snugly, and the tool has a good fit and finish, that i should be ok
01:34 PM andypugh: No APT equivalent in the US? I think that this is my Tool1 on the lathe: https://www.shop-apt.co.uk/turning-tool-sets-for-steel/turning-set-95-deg-16x16-shank-with-10-wnmg-080404-inserts-for-steel.html
01:37 PM roycroft: my lathe can take up to a 12mm shank
01:37 PM roycroft: that is what limits my options
01:40 PM roycroft: i could possibly mount the next size larger qctp on my lathe, but i might have to make a custom, thinner compound slide for that, and i'd rather not deal with that
01:50 PM * roycroft is actually thinking about downsizing the lathe, but that depends on whether he finds a new property with a bigger shop or not
02:07 PM Tom_L: roycroft, you'd better get a set of carbide boring bars while you're at it
02:07 PM roycroft: aah, the tool holder i was looking at takes two size inserts
02:07 PM roycroft: the first size is almost impossible to find
02:07 PM roycroft: the second size i'm finding buttloads of good quality ones on ebay
02:07 PM roycroft: i have a couple good boring bars
02:07 PM roycroft: and i don't use them that often
02:08 PM Tom_L: and an ID groove tool
02:08 PM andypugh: Well, why not buy a boring bar and cut the tail off to use it as a turning tool? https://www.chronos.ltd.uk/product/glanze-s12-k-pwunr-06-boring-tool-with-wnmg-06-insert/
02:08 PM roycroft: it still makes sense to me to buy a single insert tool holder and some quality inserts and see how that works out before investing a lot of time, money, and energy into it
02:08 PM roycroft: i think i'll get that shars tool holder and some good quality inserts for it
02:09 PM Tom_L: what? it's not costing me a dime :)
02:09 PM roycroft: https://www.shars.com/1-2-rh-mwln-tri-lock-tool-holder
02:09 PM roycroft: that one
02:10 PM roycroft: which i can get brand new for way less than that, with free shipping
02:15 PM JT-Shop: I thought I had all the big rounds split only to find I still had the butt end and the one above that at the felling site and it's 20" in diameter and 18" long so a heavy one
02:15 PM andypugh: Oh, yeah, you don’t use ISO insert sizes do you? You have your own unique imperial ones.
02:16 PM JT-Shop: lol
02:16 PM Tom_L: it would depend on the holder
02:16 PM JT-Shop: I have a holder like that but it's a quality one
02:17 PM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/303108458158
02:17 PM roycroft: i think those would be fine for mild steel, wouldn't they?
02:17 PM Tom_L: until you've seen the best what you have doesn't seem so bad
02:18 PM Tom_L: roycroft, probably
02:18 PM roycroft: it's about 1/2 price or less, and certainly within the price range of an experiment
02:19 PM Tom_L: if you're cutting aluminum you'll probably want the gold colored ones
02:20 PM roycroft: i can use hss for aluminium, for now at least
02:20 PM roycroft: i'm interested in this for turning steel at the moment
02:21 PM Tom_L: you can use the others but likely with not as good result
02:24 PM roycroft: well i just ordered that stuff
02:24 PM roycroft: i found some kennametal inserts that look to be almost identical to the sandvik but cost slightly less
02:24 PM roycroft: so now i won't bug you all about this again until at least after the parts arrive
02:25 PM * roycroft wonders how long it will take him to destroy 10 inserts
02:27 PM Tom_L: if you're careful, years
02:27 PM roycroft: hopefully
02:27 PM Tom_L: kennametal, sandvik and iscar are all comparable
02:27 PM roycroft: especially since i don't use that lathe very often
02:28 PM roycroft: yeah, i know they're all top quality, and feel fine about any of those brands
02:28 PM roycroft: figuring out which specific inserts work best for which metals is going to be interesting
02:28 PM Tom_L: the tool guy used to come by with samples of new coatings for us to try now and then
02:28 PM Tom_L: or various compounds
02:29 PM Tom_L: most of the lathe stuff we ran was SS
02:29 PM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/304831795080
02:29 PM roycroft: that's what i ended up getting
02:30 PM Tom_L: did you look that number up to see what metal it was intended for?
02:31 PM roycroft: the kennametal website had it in the "steel" category
02:31 PM Tom_L: finishing
02:31 PM Tom_L: more relief behind the edge
02:31 PM roycroft: i can't take super aggressive cuts with my lathe anyway
02:31 PM Tom_L: if you push it that edge could chip
02:31 PM roycroft: so it will probably be find
02:32 PM roycroft: fine
02:32 PM Tom_L: probably
02:32 PM Tom_L: when you get the holder i'd ask shars if they have extra screws
02:33 PM Tom_L: or whomever
02:33 PM roycroft: extra screws would probably be nice
02:33 PM roycroft: i'm good about not losing stuff like that
02:33 PM roycroft: but i could be swapping inserts while standing in a sea of swarf some day and a screw might go missing
02:33 PM roycroft: obviously never to be found
02:34 PM Tom_L: it will land in the sharpest of birds nests too
02:34 PM roycroft: yes
02:34 PM * roycroft had a big bird's nest going a couple days ago when his insert chipped
