#linuxcnc Calendar

12:36 AM roycroft: and they flipped the house of delegates
01:44 AM Deejay: moin
04:48 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:53 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:19 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:32 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
06:50 AM JT-Cave: pcw-home, VFS - 5V)/50 uA (5V mode)
06:50 AM JT-Cave: (VFS - 10V)/100 uA (10V mode)
06:50 AM JT-Cave: Where VFS is the new full scale input voltage and REXT is the new external series
06:50 AM JT-Cave: resistor.
06:50 AM JT-Cave: I don't see REXT anywhere in the thcad2 manual
06:51 AM JT-Cave: is it supposed to be (VFS - 5V)/50 uA = REXT (5V mode)
01:16 PM lcnc-relay: <plaidrabbit#0> For doing something like a bridgeport conversion. what's a reasonable max-torque for the X and Y feed handles. I've see people putting 3NM/35ft-lb steppers on them, and that seems a bit high...
01:18 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: yay, got the toolchanger working
01:21 PM lcnc-relay: <plaidrabbit#0> Woo! NICE! What do you have?
01:22 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: a 4x8' router with a carousel atc
01:23 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: i just realized i need to add a function to raise the dust hood before the arm moves in though.
01:23 PM lcnc-relay: <plaidrabbit#0> *drools*
01:24 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: the only thing i really need to do is to make the toolsetter functional
01:24 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: and make the touchscreen work
01:24 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: then it's done
01:25 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: following error is down to .0002" or less at max vel, i'm good with that
01:31 PM lcnc-relay: <plaidrabbit#0> Wow. Better then mine. I'm jelous.
01:33 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Tom_L I may have not pushed the most recent code, check the msg line to yours
01:34 PM Tom_L: gotta run but will when i get back
01:44 PM CaptHindsight: LUNADA_DESKTOP: are you using Classic Ladder for the toolsetter control?
02:01 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> Tom_L I'm in the middle of adding a scale calculator so I can't push right now.
02:16 PM justTesting is now known as justThanks
02:25 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> UPS just announced a 6.3% increase to cover the union agreement
02:43 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: CaptHindsight not sure yet
02:43 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: havent gotten that far
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: do you have pics of your machine?
02:46 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: https://pasteboard.co/fGot13kK2Z4N.jpg
02:48 PM CaptHindsight: beefy gantry
02:48 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: too bad the machine is about as rigid as a wet noodle
02:49 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: z axis sucks. i need to swap the bearings out for tighter tolerance ones
02:49 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: lots of delfection
02:49 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: deflection*
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: ok, does the gantry flex outside the slop of the bearings?
02:50 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: the gantry itself is probably ok, but there's a lot of flex in the z axis
02:50 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: i actualoly had to slow down the accel because of it
02:50 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: actually* jesus.
02:50 PM CaptHindsight: is the flex in the X gantry or in the Z positioner itself?
02:51 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: in the z.
02:51 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: mostly the bearings
02:51 PM CaptHindsight: linear bearings don't cost too much
02:52 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: it's around 2k usd to do
02:52 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: and a bit of work
02:53 PM CaptHindsight: how much travel in the Z?
02:53 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: 33"
02:54 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: we got screwed on the machine
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.automation4less.com/product/detail/HGR15R
02:55 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: the company that built it promised a certain amount of speed and accuracy and couldnt deliver
02:55 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.automation-overstock.com/products.asp?cat=205
02:55 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: we tried to back out after learning this but they refused to give back the depost (of nearly 50k)
02:55 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: so the owner decided to buy it anyway
02:56 PM CaptHindsight: 1m rails are ~$80 ea
02:56 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.automation-overstock.com/proddetail.asp?prod=BLH15Rxxxx
02:56 PM CaptHindsight: 2 x $80 = $160
02:57 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: it needs tight tolerance bearings.
02:57 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: those are what's in it now
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: matching 15mm blocks are only ~$30 ea
02:57 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: hiwin has several different bearing grades
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: 4 x $30 = $120
02:57 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: trust me man. ive been through this
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: sure they do, and these are copies
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: me too
02:58 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: the bearings arent worn.
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: just posting some money saving links
02:58 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: they are the wrong tolerance
02:59 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: it's been loose since day 1
03:01 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: hopefully i have a new job before i ever get around to fixing it lol
03:03 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: i didnt even think i'd retrofit it before i left, but the osai controller shit the bed
03:03 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: and they wanted 5k to repair it, if they even could
03:04 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: so, $600 later, it's on linuxcnc
03:04 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: (including a new touchscreen)
03:04 PM XXCoder: thats great use
03:05 PM XXCoder: also wow what a cruddy company
03:05 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: terrible company
03:05 PM lcnc-relay: <plaidrabbit#0> Ooof. Dealing with that situation must be rough. I'm guessing it's a chinese import?
03:06 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: well, they hid that fact before we bought it, but yea
03:06 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: they said it was built in michigan
03:06 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: but in reality all they did was import it and install some stuff
03:07 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: the machine is only 5 years old
03:10 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: it feels good to have retrofitted a machine again though. i thought i'd be more rusty than i was
03:10 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: got the toolchanger working in a day
03:12 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: the last one i did in classicladder, this one i used the carousel function since i had to move the z
03:18 PM CaptHindsight: how wide is the X?
03:18 PM CaptHindsight: ~1.3m? 4ft
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: we have heat today, new furnace and gas line \0/
03:24 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: the vacuum table is 4' but the travel is 5'
03:25 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: nice. is it cold enough to need it yet?
03:27 PM * roycroft is looking at a house where the furnace has been removed, and is trying to decide betwen a new central furnace, a heat pump, or a pellet stove for heat
03:28 PM bjorkintosh: heat pumps are the iphones of heaters these days.
03:28 PM bjorkintosh: all the cool kids want one.
03:28 PM roycroft: i'm actually leaning towards a new central furnace (electric), and an insert wood stove to fit in the fireplace
03:28 PM roycroft: so that if the power goes out i can still make heat
03:28 PM bjorkintosh: we have gas.
03:28 PM roycroft: heat pumps are more efficient than a conventional furnace, but require a lot more maintenance
03:29 PM bjorkintosh: I know it's like tobacco now. but it works with or without power.
03:29 PM roycroft: there's no natural gas where this house is
03:29 PM roycroft: and i don't want to install a big propane tank
03:29 PM CaptHindsight: the gas heat is included in the rent so who needs some heat? I can bag it and send it ground freight
03:29 PM bjorkintosh: hahaha
03:30 PM roycroft: so bofa have been begging me to get a new credit card with them
03:30 PM roycroft: finally, they offered me $200 if i get the card and spend $1k with it within 90 days
03:30 PM roycroft: the rewards work better for that than my old bofa card, so i went for it
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: well wood heat is far too environmentally damaging
03:30 PM roycroft: today i went to cancel the old card, because i won't be using it any more
03:30 PM roycroft: they did not want me to cancel
03:31 PM roycroft: in the end, they offered me a $175 credit if i declined to cancel, and charged $1500 on *ANY* bofa credit card within the next 90 days
03:31 PM roycroft: i asked if points i get for the $200 bonus also count for the $175 bonus, and they confirmed that they do
03:32 PM roycroft: i said "fine, then i'll wait until february to cancel that card"
03:32 PM roycroft: and locked it in the meantime
03:32 PM bjorkintosh: banks. the most unnecessary thing you can ever encounter. if you need money, they can't help you. if you don't need money, they're right there to assist!
03:32 PM roycroft: yes
03:32 PM roycroft: and this one is literally throwing money at me
03:33 PM bjorkintosh: because you don't need it.
03:33 PM roycroft: i'm willing to stick my hand up and catch it
03:36 PM roycroft: anyway, if i end up buying that house i'm talking about i'll have over double the shop space that i have currently
03:36 PM roycroft: my cnc router can become a reality, and would not have to be a combination cnc router/router table - i'd have the space for both
03:37 PM CaptHindsight: Hello, I wish to borrow some money that I don't need
03:37 PM * roycroft would really like being able to comfortably walk around his shop without bumping into things
03:38 PM roycroft: capthindsight: a few years ago a major bank was begging me to open a checking account with them
03:38 PM roycroft: i kept respectfully declining, as i was and am perfectly happy with my credit union
03:38 PM lcnc-relay: <JT (@jt-shop:matrix.org)> I'm working on making eoom
03:38 PM roycroft: finally the offered me $400 if i opened an account and kept it active for 3 months
03:39 PM roycroft: i asked them what "active" meant, and they said a minimum balance of $500, and one deposit and one atm withdrawl per month
03:39 PM CaptHindsight: Hello,Please step right up if we can loan you some money that you don't need but also charge you more than the loan
03:39 PM roycroft: so i opened an account with $500, made the requisite deposit and atm withdrawl three months in a row
03:39 PM roycroft: the day the credited me the $400 i closed the account
03:39 PM CaptHindsight: so we give you say $5,000 and you give us back $6,000, how does this sound to you?
03:40 PM roycroft: i told them up front that i would do that, and they were fine
03:40 PM bjorkintosh: sounds like you're making bank, Mr Bank.
03:40 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: did they get mad at you?
03:40 PM roycroft: the marketing person got a spiff for every account they opened, i'm sure
03:40 PM XXCoder: been using cu for decades now. I closed bankj account when they delibately charged account from largest to smallest to get largest fees possible
03:40 PM roycroft: and that's all they cared about
03:41 PM roycroft: and that's the same thing that happened today, i'm sure
03:42 PM roycroft: i told the person on the phone that i would delay closing the account until i got my $175, and they were perfectly fine with that
03:42 PM roycroft: from there perspective, they prevented an account closure, and they either got a spiff for that or a star on their performance review
03:42 PM roycroft: s/there/their/
03:43 PM roycroft: when i call in februrary to close the account the points will go against somone else
03:43 PM roycroft: or they will beg me to stay again and throw more money at me if i stay
03:44 PM roycroft: i'm happy to keep the account open indefinitely if i keep getting rewarded for doing so, and can keep the card locked
04:34 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as unterhausen
05:40 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: has anyone ever added a temporary work offset?
05:41 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: it would be nice if i could make small adjustments without linuxcnc completely reloading the program. some of them are very long and it takes sometimes 5 minutes to load it once i make a work offset change
05:42 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: we do molds that have a ton of detail and the programs are huge
05:43 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: looks like the OFFSET component may work
05:43 PM Tom_L: you can also use 'run from line'
05:44 PM Tom_L: just make sure the spindle is back on
05:44 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: that's not really what i mean
05:44 PM Tom_L: i know, just didn't know if you were aware of it
05:44 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: everytime you change a work offset (g55, etc), linuxcnc reloads the entire program
05:44 PM LUNADA_DESKTOP: ah. yea i do, thanks. that is a very nice feature
05:52 PM CaptHindsight: https://antidepressantsortolkien.vercel.app/ as a distraction
06:20 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> I use G92 for doing arrays of features or you could use G10 L2 to reset the offset values. I don't think G10 L2 reloads the program because I use it in my probe routines and you can see that the toolpath is offset from the backplot.
06:25 PM CaptHindsight: zincboy_ca_on: ever work with https://www.azooptics.com/optics-equipment-details.aspx?EquipID=208 or similar multichannel fiber rotary joints?
06:27 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.moog.com/products/fiber-optic-rotary-joints/multi-channel-forj.html
06:27 PM solarwind: As I walk through the valley where I harvest my grain, I take a look at my wife and realize she's very plain
06:27 PM solarwind: But that's just perfect for an amish like me, you know I shun fancy things like electricity
06:27 PM CaptHindsight: yah goin all quaker on us?
06:28 PM solarwind: At 4:30 in the morning I'm milking cows
06:28 PM solarwind: Jebediah feeds the chickens and Jacob ploughs FOOL
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on> CaptHinds, looks cool but I haven't used one of those. I mostly work on the lab side of things so we don't use stuff like that. I would be curious to see how they work inside.

06:31 PM CaptHindsight: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collettore_rotante#Giunti_rotanti_a_fibra_ottica
06:52 PM CaptHindsight: bjorkintosh: are you stuck in the door?
07:35 PM bjorkintosh: dammit. stupid wifi issues.
