12:22 AM Tom_L: roycroft, i ran gdebi from a terminal and it said i need to be root
12:35 AM Tom_L: that's a bit odd to me since i'm also running debian 12 on my main test pc
12:35 AM Tom_L: and i can use gdebi with user
12:36 AM * Tom_L calls it a morning
12:47 AM solarwind: Tom_L I'll call YOU in the morning if you know what I mean
01:01 AM solarwind: I just don't understand what's going on. If I run this damn 3" face mill at 1400 RPM, it constantly throws a stream of sparks, but I get a mirror-like finish. It takes its toll on the inserts though.
01:01 AM solarwind: If I run it at the suggested 250 RPM and reduce the feed proportionally, no sparks, but I get the scratchy surface finish
01:01 AM solarwind: I'm not running coolant, just gear oil as cutting fluid
01:01 AM solarwind: The stream of sparks is probably the chips burning up as they're being ejected. The surface finish is beautiful though
01:01 AM solarwind: I then ran it at too low a speed and immediately chipped every insert and caused some of the seats to get gouged *facepalm*
02:12 AM Deejay: moin
04:38 AM andypugh: Tom_L: On all my machines I have to use sudo to install debs. (Generally I use sudo apt-get install ./path-to-deb )
04:38 AM andypugh: I think that’s normal.
04:54 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:27 AM Tom_L: andypugh, that's true but this requires root
05:27 AM Tom_L: sudo didn't work
05:28 AM Tom_L: morning
05:28 AM andypugh: Maybe user “cnc” isn’t in the sudoers group? Is this the Pi image?
05:29 AM Tom_L: let me try once more... i've tested so many things here...
05:29 AM Tom_L: this is the rpi4 iso image for debian 12
05:30 AM mrec: I wonder is anyone using differential signalling for step/dir on longer transmission lines?
05:30 AM Tom_L: i may have just used gdebi from the terminal... not sudo gdebi
05:31 AM Tom_L: on my amd pc i'm able to use it with a regular sudo user from the gui
05:32 AM Tom_L: yeah i was wrong... from a terminal: sudo gdebi mesact.deb installed
05:32 AM Tom_L: but i've never had to do it that way in the past
05:35 AM Tom_L: previously i just right clicked on the deb and selected gdebi from the dropdown menu
05:35 AM Tom_L: it would then prompt for a password
05:36 AM Tom_L: i wonder if that's the difference between xfce and mate
05:36 AM Tom_L: i've always used mate in the past
06:12 AM JT-Cave: in raspbian you just click on a deb and it prompts you to install
06:59 AM _unreal_: are there any good plasma cam software packages out there
06:59 AM _unreal_: that are opensource?
06:59 AM _unreal_: or just free in general? I.E. carbide create etc..
07:06 AM _unreal_: hum openbuilds.com
07:15 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
09:10 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, right however my desktop amd64 behaves the same way. that's why i was confused
10:44 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, sserial fix warrant a build?
11:31 AM JT-Cave: mostly it's for the 5i25 but a bit of it is for all
11:33 AM Roguish: JT-Cave: good morning. hey, for your personal website, who's the host? know anything about Joomla?
11:37 AM JT-Cave: Dreamhost, Yes I know I hate joomla
11:42 AM Roguish: ok, thanks. I had a simple site on Weebly, but Square bought 'em, and now they suck. looking for a 'free' simple host....
11:48 AM JT-Cave: if you have a fixed ip you can host it yourself
11:50 AM Roguish: have Comcast, so no static IP
11:53 AM JT-Cave: Dreamhost has a starter shared for $100 for 3 years right now and you can put a Wordpress site on that
12:00 PM Tom_L: roycroft, i use no-ip for a dynamic ip and have the server in the basement
12:00 PM Tom_L: just for posting random stuff
12:00 PM Tom_L: for the free you gotta ping them once a month
12:01 PM Tom_L: not roycroft rather roguish but he left
12:01 PM * JT-Shop heads out for a ride
12:01 PM Tom_L: my dynamic ip seldom changes
12:02 PM Tom_L: Roguish, ^^
12:04 PM Tom_L: i was on dyndns but they changed their policy
12:04 PM Tom_L: https://www.noip.com/free
12:04 PM Roguish: looking at that now. I check it out. thanks.
12:04 PM Tom_L: mine is just for putzing around
12:04 PM Tom_L: and my isp blocks 80 so i use 81
12:06 PM Tom_L: i even got the server pc free..
12:06 PM Tom_L: some hp thing somebody was throwing out
12:07 PM Tom_L: the logger runs on it
12:16 PM bjorkintosh: https://www.popsci.com/technology/smart-home-for-chickens-coop/
05:41 PM JT-Shop: LOL
05:42 PM Tom_L: yeah... don't let jt see that !
05:42 PM JT-Shop: too late
05:42 PM XXCoder: bit late there tom ;)
05:59 PM JT-Shop: you might fit 2 bantam chickens in that tiny thing but they would not be happy with that small space
06:00 PM CloudEvil: https://i.imgur.com/pwAeH5p.mp4
06:01 PM JT-Shop: I've seen a few of those... not very practical
06:08 PM solarwind: https://youtu.be/ZuGipte8ftI?si=EG6YCvVcTPEQWvzc&t=1026 what is the step they're doing right after the hot dip galvanizing?
06:08 PM solarwind: (aside from breathing in zinc fumes)
06:10 PM CloudEvil: I was going to say vibratory shaker before I turned on sound.
06:10 PM solarwind: Ohhh if you watch a few more seconds, it just rotates it
06:10 PM solarwind: to fling off the extra zinc
06:11 PM solarwind: "WLL 150T"
06:11 PM CloudEvil: Oh, right
06:11 PM CloudEvil: neat
06:11 PM solarwind: Is that a "chinese" 150T or regular 150T?
06:12 PM roycroft: it's centrifuge
06:13 PM CloudEvil: Spinny-boi.
06:13 PM JT-Shop: centripetal acceleration
10:28 PM mrec: finally I added RS422 to the ihsv57 motors, they work pretty well now
10:29 PM mrec: the connectors overall aren't good on them.
10:30 PM mrec: if I don't screw down the power cables the motors will not have a good connection here and lose the position or even error out
10:31 PM mrec: I need to glue down the connector since I can pull it out relatively easy
