#linuxcnc Calendar

12:52 AM memleak: JT-Shop, I covered how to install SystemRescue to a USB device as well as modified the installer to counter-act Debian's automounting feature.
01:03 AM memleak: The installer should work now in Debian, I strongly suggest backing up your data before running the installer though just in case. As with any Linux install, data loss is possible.
01:03 AM memleak: Updated wiki: https://openlunchbox.com/mw19/index.php/HOWTO:_Gentoo_for_LinuxCNC

04:27 AM travis_farmer: Morning :-)
04:36 AM mrec: does anyone know prices for 304SS 1mm sheets? the price gaps which I can find online are hugh
04:37 AM mrec: laserboost in Spain is still among the cheapest laser cutting services it seems, another one we found is close to north korea; most businesses charge like 2-3 times of what the spanish company charges
04:38 AM mrec: moving this abroad will cost around 300-400$ shipping...
04:39 AM mrec: plasma cutting would also be acceptable it seems, so I'm only interested in the material price and maybe I'll build my own linuxcnc plasma cutter
04:51 AM rmu: mrec: 1mm sheets of 1.4301 stainless steel should be around 3€ to 3,5€ per kg depending on quantity. that translates to ~25€-30€ per m²
04:52 AM rmu: mrec: where are you located?
05:22 AM mrec: Taiwan
05:22 AM mrec: I calculated around 9-15$ Alibaba prices (I just want to get some reference price for it)
05:23 AM mrec: I'm calculating how viable it is to set up a plasma cutter for this project
05:24 AM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/yZqY5J.jpg it's about the reel holder
05:26 AM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/t8OC3x.jpg this is not what I want ;-)

05:51 AM JT-Mobile: morning
06:09 AM * JT-Mobile goes to check the mail
06:19 AM rmu: surely there is a bunch of job-shops in taiwan that will laser-cut everything that can be laser-cut to spec

09:37 AM rigid: yay! finally got that spindle turning with the rsh ui!! \o/
10:41 AM CaptHindsight: what is the going pay/hour for 5-axis CNC machinists vs 5-axis programmers?
10:47 AM Unterhausen: $20 for either
10:49 AM Unterhausen: I may not be joking for most of the U.S.
10:58 AM CaptHindsight: I see starting pay around here for $22/hour
10:58 AM CaptHindsight: skimming through CL
10:59 AM CaptHindsight: most are 24-35/hr
11:01 AM CaptHindsight: Detroit https://detroit.craigslist.org/search/jjj?query=cnc#search=1~thumb~0~0
11:04 AM Tom_L: CaptHindsight, $25ish here and 25+ yrs ago i was getting $35ish programming
11:06 AM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: did they pay less for 3-axis work?
11:07 AM Tom_L: if you're hired for a job, you should be flexible so i don't think that makes alot of difference
11:07 AM Tom_L: and the 25+ yrs ago was 3 axis
11:08 AM CaptHindsight: does manual work pay more or less than CNC?
11:08 AM CaptHindsight: actual machinist vs machine watcher
11:08 AM Tom_L: i'm not sure but i think my bud did pretty well with manual because nobody else could figure it out
11:08 AM CaptHindsight: ok so you do a little setup as well for CNC
11:08 AM CaptHindsight: heh
11:08 AM Tom_L: alot of what he did was special setups for odd cuts etc
11:09 AM Tom_L: machinist includes setup yes
11:09 AM Tom_L: and working with the programmer to fix their crap
11:09 AM CaptHindsight: CNC operator vs machinist, if you get me drift
11:10 AM Tom_L: button monkey vs machinist?
11:10 AM Tom_L: there are an abundance of the former here too
11:16 AM Tom_L: now days i think 5-6 axis are predominant over 3 here
11:17 AM Tom_L: back then there were alot more 3 axis
11:17 AM CaptHindsight: i was reading into the export controls from the US for simultaneous 5+ axis CAM and machine operation
11:17 AM Tom_L: knowing a particular control helps alot too
11:18 AM Tom_L: siemens is rather popular here
11:18 AM CaptHindsight: did you see the LCNC gui that tries to clone Siemens?
11:18 AM Tom_L: no
11:19 AM CaptHindsight: turning
11:19 AM Tom_L: the shop my kid is at now doesn't have alot of 3 axis or small machines
11:20 AM Tom_L: i'd guess 6-8 of those large gantrys and a couple 6 axis .. i forget the name of
11:21 AM Tom_L: starrag ecospeed
11:21 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cincinnati/Starrrag_Ecospeed.jpg
11:22 AM Tom_L: the newer 6 axis
11:28 AM CaptHindsight: https://youtu.be/ELJM7SbS2HM?si=hQQj7YGeVdR1fOFr&t=67
01:38 PM rigid: cool
04:57 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
04:57 PM Unterhausen: I have to dig a 4' deep hole for doggy septic system. I managed to get it to 2 1/2 feet deep so far
05:04 PM bjorkintosh: Unterhausen, no subcontracting?
05:05 PM Unterhausen: getting someone to do something like that around here is nearly impossible
05:05 PM Unterhausen: and the dogs said no
05:13 PM roycroft: you should be able to dig it very quickly if you rent a s mall excavator from united rentals or some similar place
05:13 PM roycroft: their hourly rate isn't too bad for small machines
05:14 PM roycroft: if it's a really small septic field you could even rent a post hole auger with a big screw and do it as a series of bores
05:20 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:21 PM JT-Shop: wtf it says I was banned from the IRC
05:24 PM roycroft: is the lag on starlink really noticeable?
05:25 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, inactivity?
05:26 PM Tom_L: odd
05:26 PM Unterhausen: I did think about renting a post hole digger, but I will probably just keep digging
05:26 PM roycroft: you're gonna get snow soon
05:26 PM roycroft: hurry up and finish before that!
05:28 PM JT-Shop: spam

05:28 PM JT-Shop: Cycling to next server in Libera.Chat...
05:30 PM XXCoder: pronbably shared ip range ban
05:32 PM JT-Shop: yeah I don't have a fixed ip
05:42 PM JT-Shop: 1,500 mile round trip
05:43 PM Tom_L: fair bit of driving
05:45 PM JT-Shop: yup and the last bit was a construction zone where we sat for a while
05:51 PM Tom_L: i've had that happen a few times
05:51 PM Tom_L: iirc once near Little Rock
05:51 PM Tom_L: we streamed a movie and nearly watched it all
05:52 PM JT-Shop: damn
05:52 PM JT-Shop: we just wanted to get home and take a power nap
05:52 PM * JT-Shop wanders down to get the mail
06:42 PM memleak: JT-Shop, did you take the vette?
06:43 PM memleak: Weather is nice, I'd probably do the full 1500 miles with the top down :)
06:43 PM JT-Shop: yes we took the C8 and top down is not an option if you have "anything" in the trunk
06:43 PM memleak: heh
06:44 PM JT-Shop: if you have the HTC you can lower the top with crap in the trunk
06:45 PM memleak: oh right around when you got banned, I got logged out with: * Disconnected (No such device or address) and * Disconnected (Remote host closed socket)
06:46 PM JT-Shop: odd
06:46 PM memleak: so where are you now?
06:47 PM JT-Shop: the C8 is much more challenging to take on a trip due to the lack of storage space
06:47 PM JT-Shop: home
06:47 PM JT-Shop: the C5 you could fit a lot of crap in the back
06:47 PM memleak: you went to.. Tennessee i think?
06:47 PM JT-Shop: east Tn
06:47 PM memleak: I like the C6 styling for some reason.
06:48 PM JT-Shop: I liked the C5 better than the C6
06:48 PM JT-Shop: the C3 is also a favorite one for me if it has side exhaust and a 427 and 4 speed
06:49 PM memleak: you've driven all the vettes??
06:49 PM JT-Shop: the C6 is the same as the C5 but without the popup headlights
06:49 PM JT-Shop: well not all but C3 C5 and C8
06:49 PM memleak: yeah i like both C5 and C6, took one around the block when I was like 11.
06:50 PM JT-Shop: our C5 was a 2004
06:50 PM memleak: funny thing, a lawyer actually had me drive lol
06:50 PM JT-Shop: automatic?
06:51 PM memleak: yeah Z06
06:51 PM JT-Shop: oh wow a Z06 is fast
06:52 PM memleak: I started sim racing when I was like 6
06:52 PM memleak: and did a lot of carts
06:53 PM memleak: they had me start racing against the older kids because the parents got tired of seeing their kids lose xD
06:53 PM JT-Shop: lol
06:55 PM memleak: The C8 was recently added to Automobilista 2, feels kind of heavy in the sim. No idea what it's like IRL
06:55 PM JT-Shop: been a long day so time to call it a day
06:56 PM JT-Shop: the C8 handles better than any other corvette and it's a bit different in a drift
06:57 PM JT-Shop: going to Ron Fellows performance driving school in March
06:57 PM bjorkintosh: there's MORE driving school besides the regular?
06:57 PM JT-Shop: ?
06:58 PM bjorkintosh: wow. a specific corvette driving school!
06:58 PM bjorkintosh: how fascinating.
06:58 PM JT-Shop: note the "performance" part
06:58 PM memleak: Well Tanner Foust was an ice driving instructor who taught on the Bonneville salt flats
06:58 PM bjorkintosh: that's pretty incredible.
06:58 PM JT-Shop: you also learn about emergency handling and stuff
06:59 PM * JT-Shop loves to drift on ice and snow
06:59 PM memleak: Heh sounds like my dream job working there.
06:59 PM JT-Shop: there are 3 stages of the driving school
06:59 PM JT-Shop: any way I'm growing weary and time to relax
07:00 PM * Tom_L has assplanted already
07:00 PM memleak: In my experience on ice and snow, WRC 10's physics are pretty spot on. I hold a few WRs on that.
07:00 PM memleak: Getting a sim racing rig is def worth it.
07:01 PM bjorkintosh: hah. I Never knew such a thing existed. Now I know.
07:02 PM memleak: To get your license in Finland, you need to know how to do a Scandinavian flick.
07:02 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:02 PM bjorkintosh: memleak, a who?
07:03 PM memleak: You basically hit the brakes, turn opposite of the corner, then use the throttle and counter-steer to power through the apex.
07:03 PM memleak: you have to pass the rally course bits
07:04 PM memleak: it's basically purposely-induced lift-off oversteer.
07:04 PM bjorkintosh: heh. I have an aging accord. no performance rallying for me.
07:05 PM memleak: Accords are FWD and pretty light, in the snow with the proper tires I'm sure it's actually fantastic.
07:06 PM bjorkintosh: no idea. I do the speed limit or below because I (my mistake) let air into the brake lines and I've been too lazy to bleed it.
07:07 PM bjorkintosh: it still stops just fine. it's just a little more travel.
07:08 PM memleak: that'd be my biggest concern lol
07:09 PM bjorkintosh: I'll fix it this weekend. it's just a pain in the ass.
07:46 PM memleak: oh andypugh you fixed linuxcncrsh?
07:47 PM memleak: saw you reverted something recently
