02:10 AM Deejay: moin
03:38 AM Loetmichel: roycroft: are you one of the anti-vaxxers?
03:38 AM XXCoder: hes definitely not
03:38 AM XXCoder: hes likely in bed as its 1 am
03:39 AM Loetmichel: hmm. forgot that its likely midnihgt where you are
03:39 AM XXCoder: 1 am yeah
03:39 AM XXCoder: we are in same timezone
03:39 AM Loetmichel: <- just arrived at the company an hour ago :)
03:39 AM Loetmichel: [10:36] <+XXCoder> 1 am yeah
03:40 AM Loetmichel: <- late as usual, i SHOULF be here eight to five :)
03:40 AM Loetmichel: -F+D
03:40 AM XXCoder: lol. well I usually go to bed 1-2 am so im getting ready now lol
03:40 AM onceloved: Is 2.9 about to be released?
03:41 AM rmu: onceloved: it is tagged
03:42 AM onceloved: 大概什么时间发布
03:43 AM onceloved: When will it be released?
03:44 AM rmu: google translate is really working very well. i guess announcement etc... will happen at the weekend
03:45 AM onceloved: '=D
04:01 AM Loetmichel: btw: who was the mesa guy again?
04:02 AM Loetmichel: new boss got me a bit of a budget to upgrade the two routers. They have core2 duo 3ghu PCs... and lpt port drivers. NOT really something you want the recent LinuxCNC on
04:02 AM Loetmichel: so a bit of advise how to upgrade those would be a good idea
04:02 AM Loetmichel: -u+z
04:02 AM Loetmichel: advice
04:03 AM rmu: Loetmichel: you mean pcw_*
04:03 AM Loetmichel: ah!
04:03 AM Loetmichel: thanks.
04:03 AM rmu: if you want to go the mesa route you probably want an ethernet setup
04:04 AM rmu: with something like that
04:04 AM rmu: http://store.mesanet.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=383&search=7i95t
04:04 AM Loetmichel: i got an offer for an Industrial i7-12900 board with lpt... but honestly: if i pay 800 for a new PC its probably more useful to use a cheap PC and a mesa board
04:05 AM rmu: or that http://store.mesanet.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=378&search=7i92t if you want to keep your parallel breakout board(s)
04:05 AM Loetmichel: yeah, drop-in replacement would be best
04:07 AM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17583&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 <- machines right now
04:08 AM Tom_L: onceloved, they hope to get it out the door this week
04:08 AM Tom_L: morning
04:09 AM Loetmichel: any advice how much "configuration" work i should quite the boss for to get the new systems running again?
04:09 AM Tom_L: with what cards?
04:09 AM Loetmichel: no idea how long it takes to install two LinuxCNC machines with all the calibration and stuff if mesa is in the play
04:10 AM rmu: Loetmichel: converting existing parallel port linuxcnc machine? main work will be upgrading to linuxcnc 2.9
04:10 AM Loetmichel: rmu: yes, two more or less identical CNC 6040
04:10 AM Tom_L: if you're running 2.8 currrently all the joint & spindle stuff should be translated already
04:10 AM Loetmichel: aka: new PCs, mesa cards, original drivers
04:11 AM Tom_L: all that happened somewhere between 2.6 & 2.8
04:11 AM Loetmichel: ek, i am running something a LOT older. 2,4 or something? (have to look on the machines
04:11 AM rmu: configuring the new PC and mesa cards should be possible in an afternoon, plus surprises and hidden mis-features that will take another 2 weeks
04:12 AM Tom_L: you will then have to update the joint & motion.spindle stuff for sure
04:12 AM Tom_L: and maybe a couple other minor things
04:12 AM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17586&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 maybe one can guess from the GUI on that pic?
04:13 AM Tom_L: mostly splitting the [AXIS] out to [AXIS] & [JOINT] sections
04:13 AM rmu: AFAIS you don't have tool-changer or some other elaborate external setup, so it should be easy to just start a config from scratch
04:13 AM rmu: pncconf
04:13 AM Loetmichel: yeah, standaard CNC 6040 stuff. one machine has an A-axis but thats about it
04:13 AM Tom_L: if you're getting some of the newer cards, give jt's mesact a try for a basic config
04:14 AM rmu: he probably will have to get one of the newer cards because the "older" stuff is all out of stock AFAIK
04:14 AM Tom_L: right
04:15 AM Tom_L: and jt is focusing on getting the newer card configs working first
04:16 AM Tom_L: i know the 7i96s is one that is supported and likely a good choice for those mills
04:17 AM Tom_L: make sure you update mesaflash as well so the new board support is there
04:17 AM Tom_L: 3.4.8 iirc is the latest
04:23 AM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWyuYmZsDfE
04:24 AM Tom_L: Loetmichel, ^^
04:25 AM rmu: Loetmichel: I would try the PCs with 2.9 install CD live system and check if they can run preempt-rt kernel with acceptable performance. 2.9 release announcement should be imminent.
04:25 AM Tom_L: he is still adding new features
04:26 AM Tom_L: a 6.xx kernel will likely be better than any 5.xx one
04:27 AM onceloved: I just installed lmde6 and the delay is very good
04:29 AM onceloved: https://imgse.com/i/pPXQp7t
04:52 AM solarwind: Any recommendations for "mini" benchtop lathe?
04:53 AM solarwind: I already have a 14x40 precision lathe
04:53 AM solarwind: Looking for something that can do high speed and for small parts
04:53 AM solarwind: I intend to use it for finish machining of 3D printed parts
04:54 AM solarwind: But will also use it for small metal parts for sure
05:07 AM rmu: Loetmichel: what problem with the two network cards? with mesa ethernet setup, you will need a dedicated ethernet card for mesa
05:08 AM solarwind: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-other-business-industrial/windsor-area-on/cincinnati-no3-milling-machine/1671240205 all the way in Windsor, near Detroit
05:08 AM solarwind: but damn, what a beautiful machine
05:08 AM rmu: the one to connect to whatever LAN you have can probably be an USB3 one if no pcie port
05:08 AM solarwind: I would not do that ^
05:08 AM solarwind: USB latency is garbage
05:08 AM solarwind: make sure it's a PCIe network card
05:09 AM rmu: latency into your LAN doesn't really matter
05:17 AM solarwind: I've heard that the colour changing desiccant is toxic or something along those lines
05:17 AM solarwind: what's up with that?
05:18 AM rmu: afaik it doesn't have to do with the color changing, the non-color-changing desiccant also is toxic
05:18 AM rmu: "do not eat"
05:19 AM solarwind: I know but I'm talking about the colour changing ones specifically
05:19 AM solarwind: people are going back to using the regular ones for drying 3D print spools
05:21 AM JT-Cave1: morning
05:21 AM rmu: the color change comes from ph indicator basically, i wouldn't eat that either, but there are harmless ones too, e.g. tea, beetroot, etc... but those are biodegradable and not stable
05:21 AM rmu: look at msds
05:29 AM rmu: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobalt(II)_chloride
05:31 AM rmu: really rather unpleasant
05:40 AM travis_farmer: Morning :-)
06:05 AM Loetmichel: rmu: IIRC there as wa problem in the early days of mesa cards where the double network setup caused problems with timing IIRC.
06:05 AM Loetmichel: -IIRC
06:07 AM Loetmichel: solarwind: define toxic. Silica gel isnt really good if ingested, but not like you die if you accidentally swallow one pearl. Regardless if its with indicator ink or not.
06:12 AM Loetmichel: just refreshed my knowledge: the silica gel itself is even inert and will not upset your system at all (other than maybe mechanically because of its water absorbtion, and even the cobalt chloride used for indicating saturation has LD50 of 20 grams for a normal adult, so you'll probably have to ingest a few kg of indicated silica gel to reach that.
06:16 AM CloudEvil: Silica gel cat litter is a good source of cheap silica gel.
06:16 AM CloudEvil: Preferrably unused.
06:17 AM Loetmichel: CloudEvil: yep, nothing smelling worse than carnivore shit. :)
06:18 AM CloudEvil: I now wonder how absorbant used cat litter would be if baked to 300C say.
06:18 AM CloudEvil: To remove any organics.
06:18 AM CloudEvil: (I do not plan to do this experiemnt as I do not have a cat)
06:19 AM Loetmichel: you'll better not. at least not if you dont want to have your wife ban you from the bedroom for life for ruining her oven ;)
06:21 AM Tom_L: Loetmichel, you don't want to run mesa cards on the main network. they typically will have their own ethernet card dedicated to the mesa card
06:21 AM CloudEvil: I also do not have one of those. (whether cat or not)
06:22 AM Tom_L: if that's what you were wondering...
06:23 AM Loetmichel: Tom_L: i know and i expected it. I meant I was sure that i heard some problems with timing issues using multiple NICs in a system in the early days of Mesa for linuxCNC
06:23 AM Tom_L: that's a pcw question :)
06:25 AM Tom_L: you shouldn't need more than one honestly.. use sserial etc for additional io
06:27 AM Loetmichel: Tom_L: yeah, point was that the "boss" requires to have all the engineering data on the server and a "process" that the machines DONT have stored more than the just worked on project data locally. To be deleted afterwards. Which makes an USB-Drive supported sneaker network a bit of a PITA
06:28 AM Tom_L: i have my mill on the network on a separate card but i'm still using a parport for the mill
06:28 AM Tom_L: on my test pc there are 2 and i haven't noticed a problem
06:29 AM Tom_L: one at 192.168.xxx and the other is at 10.10.10.xx
06:30 AM Loetmichel: i am using the two CNCs now with said "sneaker net" because i dont want to have 10 year old linux systems in a company network. Probably not a good idea :)
06:38 AM rmu: 2 CNCs with mesa ethernet setup and connected to LAN, those machines can even be remote-controlled with nomachine or rustdesk without issue

07:29 AM JT-Cave: weather looks real nice at Sevierville for our trip
07:44 AM Tom_L: 56F here
07:45 AM travis_farmer: 59F
07:48 AM JT-Cave: rain all day here
10:47 AM JT-Cave: cold front moving in tonight
10:49 AM roycroft: it will be unseasonably warm here again today, and for a few days, with the rain returning on monday
10:56 AM CaptHindsight: hey look the reprappers have discovered linear motors https://www.tomshardware.com/news/3d-printer-uses-magnets-to-break-speed-limits-print-at-a-table-shaking-800-mms
11:26 AM bjorkintosh: no videos?
11:31 AM CloudEvil: Magnets - meh

11:32 AM CloudEvil: The future of 3d printing positioners
11:34 AM bjorkintosh: hahah.
11:35 AM bjorkintosh: that's ... an evil cloud, CloudEvil!
12:30 PM Unterhausen: bambu labs facebook group is a gift that just keeps on giving. So much drama. And none of it affects me.
12:32 PM XXCoder: that company is a mess. glad I wasnt hired by them, and didnt buy printer
12:32 PM XXCoder: from what I understand its mostly fine except for that middle management guy

04:16 PM JT-Shop: pcw--home, did they start making spartan 6 chips again or did someone find some in old inventory?
04:38 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
04:39 PM Unterhausen: for some reason I want one of those fake nvme with sd cards inside
04:43 PM roycroft: i may have an unused 5i25 and whatever stepper child card goes with that for sale
04:43 PM roycroft: if anyone is interested
04:55 PM JT-Shop: I'd be interested in it for a backup
04:55 PM JT-Shop: the BP has a 5i25
04:58 PM roycroft: i'll let you know if i decide to sell it
04:58 PM JT-Shop: ok
04:59 PM roycroft: it's unused, other than plugging it in for testing, and i'd like to get what i paid for it or close to that
04:59 PM roycroft: which i know is more than you would normally pay for it, since i bought it from you
04:59 PM roycroft: but if we get to that point you can let me know what you think is fair
05:00 PM JT-Shop: ok, let me know when you make up your mind
05:00 PM * roycroft will probably decide fairly soon what he's going to do about that, and other things
05:00 PM JT-Shop: I'll be back Thursday
05:01 PM JT-Shop: leaving in the am
05:01 PM JT-Shop: my guess is a 7i76
05:04 PM roycroft: probably
05:04 PM roycroft: that sounds right
05:04 PM roycroft: it's been a while since i bought this
05:04 PM roycroft: it was a bundle of the 5i25 + daughter board + cable
05:07 PM JT-Shop: I think those sold for $195 back then...
05:11 PM roycroft: we'll talk when i decide what i'm going to do
05:11 PM JT-Shop: ok
05:11 PM roycroft: i'll be fair and i know you'll e fair
05:11 PM roycroft: be
05:12 PM roycroft: thanks
06:02 PM JT-Shop: night
08:43 PM pcw--home: JT-Shop: These are new (price about doubled though)
