04:22 AM Tom_L: morning
04:33 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:00 AM travis_farmer: Morning :-)
05:08 AM travis_farmer: looks like hurricane Lee is headed my way... and i am in the high-wind warning zone. hope my new and old shops fair ok...
06:07 AM JT-Cave: a wise sailor battens down the hatches before the storm arrives... after is too late
06:08 AM travis_farmer: never been wise, or a sailor ;-)
06:11 AM JT-Cave: never too soon to start...
06:15 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:42 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
06:50 AM Tom_L: rain on the way
07:05 AM JT-Cave: not much here
08:03 AM * JT-Cave starts his chicken day
09:49 AM * JT-Cave heads to Zia's for lunch
10:13 AM * travis_farmer starts oven to make a chicken cordon bleu burger
11:38 AM travis_farmer: in prep for the hurricane, my father and i have to take the two 100 pound LP gas tanks to the fill station for filling (for the standby generator). sounds like back-breaking work, but they are't too bad to edge-roll onto the trailer.
01:52 PM travis_farmer: there, $66 worth of LP gas, for the generator...
02:14 PM * roycroft just put $138 worth of r99 in his pickup, and is not happy about that
02:15 PM roycroft: it's gone up from $4.19 to $4.99 recently
02:15 PM roycroft: petrodiesel averages about $5.69 these days here
02:15 PM roycroft: for no good reason
02:18 PM XXCoder: doesnt help that west coast is one of most expensive for gas, expecially wa state
02:22 PM Tom_L: wait til they go all electric and the grid goes down daily
02:31 PM XXCoder: nah
02:31 PM XXCoder: here arent texas
02:36 PM roycroft: what's odd is that r99 and petrodiesel were in the low $3 range a short while ago, and fuel prices usually go down right after labor day
02:36 PM roycroft: but this year they shot up
02:37 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, right, you don't have guns :)
02:37 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: is that the fear?
02:37 PM CaptHindsight: the same power that runs the pumps
02:38 PM XXCoder: I dont, but theres bunch that does. not sure what youre about :)
02:38 PM Tom_L: i think it's funny CA is going all electric but doesn't have the grid to support it
02:38 PM CaptHindsight: if they come they will build it
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: impending doom for the Carters
03:03 PM roycroft: if you're talking about the former first family, yes
03:03 PM CaptHindsight: yes :(
03:04 PM XXCoder: hes dying now?
03:04 PM roycroft: former president carter has been in home hospice care for over a month, and his wife suffers from dementia
03:04 PM XXCoder: that sucks
03:04 PM CaptHindsight: he turns 99 on Oct 1
03:04 PM roycroft: yes, but i would not predict when
03:04 PM roycroft: most people in his condition would have passed long ago
03:04 PM CaptHindsight: oldest president
03:04 PM roycroft: he seems remarkably resiliant
03:04 PM CaptHindsight: Bush was 94
03:05 PM CaptHindsight: good innings
03:05 PM XXCoder: he volunteered for so many years
03:05 PM XXCoder: kept himself fit
03:07 PM roycroft: he's easily the best ex-president ever
03:07 PM XXCoder: “My esteem in this country has gone up substantially. It is very nice now when people wave at me, they use all their fingers.”
03:07 PM XXCoder: carter
03:08 PM CaptHindsight: unless you're a selfish sociopath then I hear it's Reagan
03:09 PM roycroft: some have argued that william howard taft was the best ex-president, with his post-presidential career as chief justice of the supreme court, but carter has done far more
03:10 PM roycroft: taft was a mediocre president, but one of our best chief justices
03:10 PM CaptHindsight: if history survives
03:10 PM roycroft: and i say that as someone who disagrees strongly with him on most things
03:10 PM XXCoder: id argue that reagon was first "ayd rand" type president
03:11 PM CaptHindsight: enabler and puppet
03:11 PM CaptHindsight: don't forget Nixon
03:12 PM XXCoder: he was horrible but wasn't ayd rand type
03:13 PM CaptHindsight: and we are in another crappy time in US history
03:13 PM CaptHindsight: that I'd rather been skimming through in the history books vs suffering through
03:15 PM Tom_L: you'll have to wait a few years for that
03:16 PM roycroft: nixon was pretty moderate, almost a "liberal", by today's standards
03:16 PM roycroft: he was also a crook, despite his protestations otherwise
03:16 PM Tom_L: he just got caught
03:17 PM roycroft: he had slimy hands, which is a tell-tale sign of his crookness
03:17 PM * roycroft had the experience of shaking hands with him once
03:17 PM CaptHindsight: hope this is not a both sides are the same argument
03:17 PM roycroft: i had to wipe my hand after
03:18 PM CaptHindsight: worked for the French https://i.imgur.com/IlswQx1.mp4
04:05 PM _unreal_: well that sucks. My supply for endless sat's. at work has ended. DIP SHIT marina employees got greedy getting into the dumpsters and now there is a total ban on taking anything from the dumpsters.
04:07 PM CaptHindsight: huh greedy people ruining it for everybody
04:08 PM _unreal_: yep
04:08 PM _unreal_: the big item though. someone tried to throw away supid expensive props.
04:08 PM XXCoder: arent you a marina employee?
04:09 PM _unreal_: new they are like 30k EACH. and 3 of them. scrap metal value ALONE about $2500 each.
04:09 PM _unreal_: no
04:09 PM _unreal_: I work for a luxury yacht company in the marina
04:09 PM _unreal_: I dont work for the marina
04:09 PM XXCoder: ok
04:10 PM _unreal_: the grounds and fork truck drivers are who f'ed it up
04:10 PM roycroft: it is illegal to dump electronics in a landfill here anyway
04:10 PM roycroft: they need to be recycled
04:10 PM roycroft: which unfortunately means they get put on a ship, hauled to india, and dumped in a landfill there
04:10 PM _unreal_: there task is to dump the big trash bins. or walk the grounds and pick stuff up and throw it away
04:10 PM _unreal_: well they where scraping
04:12 PM _unreal_: so between that and some people also trying to scrap items that where NOT being thrown away. :(
04:12 PM _unreal_: sigh
04:12 PM _unreal_: really pissed
04:12 PM _unreal_: this weekend I'm trying to get the control box built a bit
04:13 PM _unreal_: I spent about $45 on ?? I can never remember the name of them. ahhh
04:13 PM _unreal_: PIN terminals
04:13 PM _unreal_: so I can start to crimp all the wires.
04:13 PM _unreal_: after the i solve the layout
04:22 PM Loetmichel: *grmbl* just got the invoice from the car mechanic. 970 eur for TWO new CVJs, a replacement winshield washer tank, a bulb for the running lights and polishing/painting one of the headlights (blind). Not to mention the bi-annual road legal test including late fees for forgetting that for 6 months :( .. owning a car in germany is certainly expensive :( .
04:25 PM _unreal_: its not expensive its a money grab from the goverment
04:25 PM _unreal_: same with new england where I use to live
04:25 PM _unreal_: I moved to florida. smooth sailing
04:26 PM _unreal_: insurance car depending, registration 2 years $75+ done
04:26 PM _unreal_: no inspections no bs
04:35 PM _unreal_: so.... whats new?
04:55 PM bjorkint0sh: not terribly much.
04:57 PM _unreal_: so.... whats old?
04:57 PM bjorkint0sh: dirt.
04:58 PM Loetmichel: _unreal_: well, in germany we have no speed limit on the highway (on about 50% of the net)... so i DO see the need for extensive inspections. Makes me feel a bit safer.
04:58 PM XXCoder: I do wish we have safety inspections sometimes
04:58 PM Loetmichel: so no money grab from my point of view
04:58 PM XXCoder: seen serious problemic vehicles here
05:00 PM Loetmichel: I was certainly glad that the cars behind me were able to decelerate without crashing into me when a grandma pulled out behind a semi at 90kph when i was flying in at 230kph on the left lane.
05:01 PM Loetmichel: my brake discs started glowing and i painted ~80m dotted black line on the tarmac.
05:01 PM XXCoder: how did you know it was glowing?
05:01 PM Loetmichel: had about a couple meters to spare to her mini car when i got dow to her speed.
05:01 PM Loetmichel: I saw the reflection in the wet tarmac (it was night.)
05:02 PM Loetmichel: point was: if the ones behind me at about the same speed would have not been able to brake in time because of bad maintenance...
05:03 PM bjorkint0sh: 142 miles per bleeping HOUR??? good heavens Loetmichel!
05:03 PM XXCoder: wow lol never seen that with my car. but then usa all have speed limits except for couple spots
05:03 PM bjorkint0sh: they'll haul you straight to jail here. no questions asked.
05:03 PM XXCoder: bjork hey in least its miles per minutes ;)
05:04 PM XXCoder: wouldnt that warp discs?
05:04 PM bjorkint0sh: I can't even imagine!
05:04 PM Loetmichel: bjorkint0sh: pretty normal speed on german Autobahn.
05:04 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: it does and it did
05:04 PM bjorkint0sh: Madness (or whatever the Tscherman equivalent of that word is)
05:05 PM Loetmichel: Wahnsinn
05:05 PM XXCoder: I guess they have to use automated brake disc lathe to flatten it if possible
05:05 PM bjorkint0sh: Exactly.
05:06 PM Loetmichel: bjorkint0sh: there is a nice video when a biker on some hot street racer with 300kph on the speedo gets overtaken by a station wagon. With a "Baby on board" sticker on the back.
05:06 PM Loetmichel: and thats legal here.
05:06 PM bjorkint0sh: hahah. but what's the rush?
05:07 PM Loetmichel: "because we can"
05:07 PM bjorkint0sh: right.
05:07 PM Loetmichel: i have the theory that it'll be easier to cancel the second amendmend for the US than to take away the german "no speed limit". (second was the one with weapons, wasnt it?)
05:08 PM bjorkint0sh: i've stopped counting.
05:32 PM Tom_L: especially in texas
06:01 PM JT-Shop: stopping much faster than a vehicle behind me is always on my mind because only a few cars on the road can stop as fast as I can
06:01 PM _unreal_: ya HIGH speed int he USA is 75 MPH
06:06 PM JT-Shop: not true, Montana has 80 MPH speed limit
06:14 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: the friction and heat is pretty uniform so unlikely to warp, when we break in new brakes we just keep them from stopping completely while hot
06:29 PM _unreal_: you have an 80 zone.... nice
06:31 PM Tom_L: they recently changed some in Ok to 80 too
06:32 PM CaptHindsight: I can't imagine uhmericans having a speed limit over 80-90mph, way too many idiots
06:33 PM CaptHindsight: at least Germany makes you learn how to drive
06:34 PM Tom_L: Arkansas has as well in some places
06:35 PM CaptHindsight: very common here https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/za83y8/stopping_on_a_highway_on_ramp/
06:35 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight: oh really hmm ok. maybe I was thinking mass not how hot
06:35 PM XXCoder: its definitely problem with vend vans. expecially soda van
06:36 PM XXCoder: driver downshifts first before braking to prevent warping discs. transmission replace once few years is cheaper than brakes each emergacy brake
06:36 PM CaptHindsight: uhmericans just can't seem to handle merging, it's just too difficult
06:36 PM XXCoder: people dont know how heavy vans can be
06:36 PM XXCoder: o they merge bumper to bumper almost
06:36 PM CaptHindsight: complete stops with red rotors is a warp incident
06:38 PM XXCoder: I was one where we almost crashed into moron driver
06:38 PM XXCoder: erm I was in one
06:38 PM XXCoder: driver had to downshift all way to 1 while braking pretty hard
06:39 PM XXCoder: thankfully brakes was fine afterwards
06:39 PM XXCoder: tires was smoking
06:47 PM solarwind: Damn, can't state how impressed I am with the chinese hiwin profiled linear rail knockoffs especially for the price
06:48 PM solarwind: Haven't run into a single "bad" one. Maybe I'm lucky. Some people on youtube are getting "sticky" units, or maybe they just don't know what they're doing. All of mine have been smooth
06:48 PM solarwind: Ball screws on the other hand have been a hit or miss
06:48 PM XXCoder: theres great rebuild videos anyway
06:49 PM solarwind: Yeah I've done the rebuild
06:50 PM solarwind: While I was researching more into ballscrew noise, I came across this article: https://www.machinedesign.com/mechanical-motion-systems/article/21834431/researchers-uncover-source-of-ballscrew-noise
06:50 PM solarwind: First interesting thing is: how the hell is it that much less economical to slow down the ball screw grinders?
06:50 PM solarwind: It's not like they're making millions of units per day
06:51 PM solarwind: If all it takes is lowering the grinder RPM to prevent the surface defects, sounds like an easy win
06:52 PM solarwind: I'm also impressed with the chinese leadscrews, for what they are. $10 gets you a meter of 8mm OD x 8mm lead 4-start leadscrew and nuts that are actually really decent quality
06:52 PM XXCoder: eh is grinder less expensive than rollers?
06:52 PM solarwind: Ground ball screws are generally more expensive
06:52 PM solarwind: the chinese ones are all rolled
06:53 PM solarwind: Everyone likes to say that rolling cold works and hardens the ball screw, which is true
06:53 PM solarwind: but no one mentions whether or not the ground ball screws are hardened or not
06:53 PM solarwind: They're obviously not made of mild steel or annealed
06:55 PM solarwind: The very low cost of lead screws makes it highly practical to use preloaded anti backlash nuts to get pretty damn good accuracy for non heavy duty purposes
06:55 PM CaptHindsight: ground ballscrews are ground from hardened rods
06:56 PM solarwind: Well there you have it
06:56 PM CaptHindsight: rolled screws are hardened after rolling
06:57 PM CaptHindsight: why ground screws are more precise
06:57 PM solarwind: yeah
06:57 PM CaptHindsight: screw vs bearing hardness, whichever is softer loses
06:58 PM solarwind: well both wear over time, but ideally the balls wear much faster
06:58 PM solarwind: and the nut
06:58 PM CaptHindsight: Nüsse
06:59 PM CaptHindsight: Kugellager
07:00 PM CaptHindsight: Kugelumlaufspindel
07:01 PM CaptHindsight: or Kugelgewindetriebe
07:03 PM CaptHindsight: see how much more technical it sounds
