12:42 AM Deejay: moin
02:52 AM rigid_: ok, so I guess I have to manually put threads on separate CPUs
02:52 AM rigid_ is now known as rigid
04:16 AM travis_farmer: Morning :-)
05:19 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:02 AM Tom_L: morning
06:25 AM rigid: does XYZA only refer to tables, tiltable around the X axis? I don't find anything with an actual lathe grip, fully rotating around the X axis
06:25 AM rigid: am I missing something or didn't anyone put something like that online, yet?
06:33 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
07:53 AM skunkworks: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9TrnDNtjjP4
12:51 PM travis_farmer: marked my 5th wheel camper down to $1000, without the new furnace... gotta get some money, but i am not throwing away that new furnace...
01:41 PM travis_farmer: hey, just noticed the forum is running smoothly now :-D
01:46 PM roycroft: kyle must have unplugged the giant linksys router and plugged it back in again
01:46 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckIMuvumYrg
01:46 PM travis_farmer: lol
01:48 PM snakedGT is now known as snaked
02:03 PM travis_farmer: i said something, now it is broken again... :-(
02:05 PM CaptHindsight: who has the "turn it off and on again" keys?
02:05 PM JT-Shop: what is broken?
02:05 PM travis_farmer: they took my keys away...
02:05 PM CaptHindsight: the forums are slow again
02:05 PM JT-Shop: hmmm
02:06 PM CaptHindsight: was working faster just minutes ago
02:06 PM travis_farmer: and fine again... must have been an update?
02:06 PM CaptHindsight: still sorta laggy
02:06 PM JT-Shop: works fine here
02:06 PM travis_farmer: fine again on my slow connection ;-)
02:08 PM JT-Shop: the forum may crash one day...
02:09 PM travis_farmer: i have LinuxCNC forums setup on my forum, just gotta activate them... course i have just Cable Internet
02:09 PM CaptHindsight: the same guy that wrote the editor has the ON/OFF keys :)
02:09 PM JT-Shop: Error
02:09 PM JT-Shop: We have detected that your server is using PHP 7.4.3-4ubuntu2.19 which is obsolete and no longer receives official security updates by its developers. The Joomla! Project recommends upgrading your site to PHP 8.0 or later which will receive security updates at least until 2023-11-26. Please ask your host to make PHP 8.0 or a later version the default version for your site. If your host is already PHP 8.0 ready please enable PHP 8.0 on your site's root and
02:09 PM JT-Shop: 'administrator' directories – typically you can do this yourself through a tool in your hosting control panel, but it's best to ask your host if you are unsure.
02:09 PM JT-Shop: Support has ended for your version of Joomla 3.10. Migrate to Joomla 4 as soon as possible.\
02:10 PM travis_farmer: oh no, thats not good...
02:10 PM JT-Shop: I have no idea who has access to the root administrator at digitalocean.com
02:11 PM JT-Shop: err the hosting control panel
02:11 PM travis_farmer: i have no idea how much traffic my forum could handle...
02:11 PM CaptHindsight: JT: maybe ask who has the admin rights on the forums
02:11 PM JT-Shop: I have root access via ssh but not to the hosting control panel so I can't do anything like backup or ask the host questions
02:11 PM travis_farmer: lol
02:12 PM JT-Shop: I know who has admin rights on the forum and SWP is the owner of the site
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: oh wow
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: haven't seen him in ~10 years
02:13 PM JT-Shop: I've not seen SWP for a long long time
02:13 PM travis_farmer: any idea how to bandwidth test my forum? without a DDOS attack?
02:13 PM JT-Shop: yep a decade sounds about right
02:14 PM travis_farmer: i can easily re-brand my forum. the domain would be harder...
02:16 PM CaptHindsight: travis_farmer: thanks for offering but we need to fix the current forums
02:17 PM travis_farmer: :-(
02:17 PM CaptHindsight: mirrors are appreciated as mirrors
02:17 PM travis_farmer: i can't mirror the data, just the boards
02:17 PM CaptHindsight: call yours something LinuxCNC ___________
02:18 PM CaptHindsight: there are sites that already mirror the forums
02:18 PM CaptHindsight: they also will ask you to log in to get your credentials :)
02:18 PM CaptHindsight: sneaky bastards
02:19 PM travis_farmer: as i said, i don't have the data. people would have to sign up to the backup forum...
02:20 PM travis_farmer: my idea is simply a backup communication forum...
02:21 PM travis_farmer: and i can't even see password even as admin, so...
02:22 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, how was wolf creek? my first thought was wolf creek nuke plant near burlington :)
02:23 PM CaptHindsight: travis_farmer: how about a read only backup forum with no login?
02:24 PM travis_farmer: what, a scraped mirror?
02:25 PM CaptHindsight: our SWP? https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-wille-padnos-964a1310
02:25 PM CaptHindsight: travis_farmer: sure
02:26 PM travis_farmer: depends on how many TB the forum is... that's why i was thinking a backup communication mirror
02:26 PM JT-Shop: a bit humid this morning but did 6 miles
02:27 PM Tom_L: is that a trail near you?
02:28 PM JT-Shop: yup, 5.7 miles from the house
02:29 PM CaptHindsight: yes, I believe so, SWP
02:29 PM JT-Shop: CaptHindsight, yes
02:34 PM CaptHindsight: JT I asked him if he can share the admin secret passwords with you or someone active on the forums that he trusts
02:35 PM JT-Shop: you have his email?
02:35 PM Tom_L: there for sure should be more than one person
02:35 PM JT-Shop: yup
02:35 PM Tom_L: wonder if seb has a backup plan
02:35 PM JT-Shop: for?
02:35 PM Tom_L: buildbot
02:36 PM CaptHindsight: didn't he just build a new buildbot a few months ago?
02:36 PM travis_farmer: wonder what OS the forum is on, as in, will it support an upgrade to PHP 8
02:36 PM Tom_L: yes
02:36 PM Tom_L: bb and bb2
02:36 PM Tom_L: they're both running
02:37 PM JT-Shop: the OS is Ubuntu
02:38 PM CaptHindsight: JT one of his emails is: Copyright 2008 Stephen Wille Padnos <swpadnos at sourceforge dot net
02:38 PM CaptHindsight: but I pinged him on Linkedin
02:38 PM JT-Shop: ok, let me know if he replies to you
02:40 PM JT-Shop: I made a note of his email
02:40 PM Tom_L: so did i :)
02:41 PM travis_farmer: i haven't used ubuntu, but can't you do a apt dist-upgrade? maybe the new updates will pull in php8
02:41 PM JT-Shop: php has to be enabled by digitalocean not in the os
02:42 PM Tom_L: and you need keys to do that
02:42 PM Tom_L: ;)
02:42 PM travis_farmer: it doesn't already have php? odd
02:43 PM JT-Shop: php is part of the host site and is not part of the os where it's used
02:43 PM travis_farmer: that makes no sense... but i digress
02:53 PM CaptHindsight: cpanel only updates to the forum website
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: ah oh well :
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: Technical details of permanent failure:
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: 550 unknown user
02:54 PM JT-Shop: cpanel?
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: <swpadnos at sourceforge dot net is broken
02:56 PM CaptHindsight: I'm guessing that forum created at digital ocean was probably done through cpanel vs from bare metal
02:56 PM CaptHindsight: https://cpanel.net/products/cpanel-whm-features/
02:57 PM JT-Shop: not seen that before
02:57 PM travis_farmer: looks like a spin-off of Webmin
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, similar
02:58 PM JT-Shop: Mail Address Syntax Validation DNS Record Validation Deliverable
02:58 PM JT-Shop: swpadnos@sourceforge.net Valid Success No
02:58 PM JT-Shop: I have access to the administrator Joomla planel
02:58 PM JT-Shop: panel
02:59 PM JT-Shop: travis_farmer, Please ask your host to make PHP 8.0 or a later version the default version for your site.
02:59 PM JT-Shop: so you have to ask the host...
03:00 PM travis_farmer: i have run PHP for years... just saying
03:00 PM JT-Shop: every website I have that is hosted is the same way
03:01 PM travis_farmer: on my website, php is installed on the OS and is upgradable by SSH root, i have done it many times
03:02 PM travis_farmer: if there is NO php at all, it becomes a little harder, but can be done by root
03:08 PM travis_farmer: but not wanting to start a fight, again, i digress
03:09 PM CaptHindsight: the world is still here, no problem
03:11 PM roycroft: the billing system we use at work runs on ioncube
03:11 PM roycroft: i otherwise like it
03:11 PM roycroft: but ioncube still does not work with php8
03:12 PM roycroft: and i'm rather annoyed
03:12 PM roycroft: i'm told that ioncube for php8 will soon be in beta
03:12 PM roycroft: this after how many years since php8 was released?
03:12 PM roycroft: 3 years
03:13 PM roycroft: as a result, the vm that the billing system runs on is stuck on debian 11 indefinitely
03:15 PM Scopeuk8 is now known as Scopeuk
03:29 PM solarwind: 0.6Nm sounds like very little, until you realize that on a 5mm ballscrew, it works out to 75kg force
03:30 PM JT-Shop: CaptHindsight, who I need to get in contact with is alex_joni as he built the forum
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: give it a try
03:31 PM solarwind: CaptHindsight I did
03:31 PM solarwind: nearly crushed my finger bone
03:31 PM JT-Shop: well I just pinged him... need to see if I can find his email
03:33 PM CaptHindsight: finger bone is connected to the hand bone
03:33 PM travis_farmer: alex AT joni.ro
03:37 PM * roycroft offered to help, both financially and adminstratively, with the forum on serveral occaions and was ignored each time, and now doesn't really car about what's going on with it
03:39 PM travis_farmer: roycroft: i keep feeling like i am banging my head on a wall... ;-)
03:41 PM roycroft: well stop banging it and just move on
03:42 PM roycroft: the situation is what it is, and doesn't seem likely to change
03:42 PM travis_farmer: the powers that be, don't trust the ones that want to help ;-)
03:43 PM roycroft: and i get how it can seem like soliciting help and setting up a mechanism for helpers to assist can seem like as much work as just doing it all oneself, but that's usually not true
03:43 PM solarwind: Very true ^
03:43 PM roycroft: it *is* true that shifting to a more management role is usually not as much fun as actually doing the grunt work
03:43 PM solarwind: Also very true ^
03:43 PM CaptHindsight: need a time mashine
03:44 PM solarwind: It's a very common phenomenon to observe
03:44 PM roycroft: but for the good of the project, the leaders need to be able to take more of a leadership role over time and do less hands-on work
03:44 PM solarwind: True yet again ^
03:44 PM roycroft: that is a hard thing to come to grips with
03:45 PM solarwind: But people have a hard time letting to
03:45 PM solarwind: letting go*
03:45 PM roycroft: and so i don't blame anyone for maintaining the status quo
03:45 PM roycroft: but i've also made as much effort as i feel i can to offer assistance
03:45 PM roycroft: sometimes you have to try and walk away, and accept that you really can't do anything more
03:46 PM travis_farmer: i fear what will come of my machine if LinuxCNC ever goes bottoms-up
03:46 PM * roycroft didn't even really try with freecad, as those folks seem even more deeply entrenched than the linuxcnc folks
03:46 PM roycroft: i don't think that will happen, travis_farmer
03:47 PM travis_farmer: i hope your right :-)
03:47 PM roycroft: first of all, your machine will have a solid, working verison of linuxcnc already
03:47 PM travis_farmer: true
03:47 PM roycroft: second, if it ever appears that the main development group are fading away or otherwise abandoning the project, it's almost certain that someone will fork it and keep it going
03:48 PM roycroft: the question is: how will the new management do things, and will they make changes that will alienate the installed base?
03:48 PM roycroft: but let's hope we don't get to that point
03:48 PM roycroft: at least not any time soon
03:48 PM solarwind: nothing's going to happen to linuxcnc
03:48 PM roycroft: i see no signs that current management are getting burned out on the project
03:49 PM CaptHindsight: every few years something comes up and there is a developer meeting, then maybe some irc meetings with voting
03:49 PM * roycroft does occasionally unknowingly wear blinders, but thinks he has a pretty clear view of this project
03:50 PM CaptHindsight: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BoardElection2005
03:50 PM travis_farmer: still, i wish i had better than 4MB upload so i could host the forum for the project, free of charge
03:51 PM CaptHindsight: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BoardOfDirectors
03:51 PM roycroft: i don't know what the current problem is
03:52 PM roycroft: i'm aware of the symptoms, but i don't know what the problem is
03:52 PM roycroft: it it's being hosted on a vps with shared resources, then some other customer may be hogging some critical resource suddenly
03:52 PM travis_farmer: apparently the same here, roycroft
03:53 PM roycroft: and the solution might be as simple as upgrading the hosting platform
03:53 PM roycroft: but it's possible that it's hit some joomla wall, where it's suddenly requiring more resources than it used to
03:53 PM roycroft: a classic example of this kind of problem with the unix operating system is directory size
03:53 PM CaptHindsight: well we'll see after SWP or Alex responds
03:54 PM roycroft: folks wonder why directory listing/browsing performance degrades quantumly, and not gradually
03:55 PM roycroft: i.e. if you have x file entries in a directory, as x increases, performance does not change until suddenly x+1 files is significantly slowr than x files
03:55 PM roycroft: that's because there's a limit to the number of inodes in the inode table
03:55 PM CaptHindsight: solve for X
03:55 PM roycroft: and when you reach that limit, you need to point to an indirect inode table
03:55 PM roycroft: so you're doing two inode lookups for each file, not one
03:56 PM roycroft: maybe joomla has some limit like that which the fourm finally reached
03:56 PM roycroft: forum
03:56 PM travis_farmer: at this point, it may be easier to archive the forum and start fresh...
03:56 PM roycroft: again, i'm a complete outsider
03:56 PM roycroft: no, it's better to fix the problem
03:56 PM roycroft: it really is
03:56 PM roycroft: but first the problem has to be identified
03:57 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.stack.imgur.com/G0Syx.jpg call IT
03:57 PM * roycroft just ripped highland woodworking new one, speaking of "call it"
03:57 PM roycroft: their website is *still* down
03:57 PM roycroft: and they just sent an email explaining the problem
03:57 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.imgur.com/9CJzUNP.jpeg tip the server
03:58 PM roycroft: they ordered an enhanced validation web certificate
03:58 PM travis_farmer: ouch, that one looks painful
03:58 PM roycroft: that's fine, if that's what they want to spend their money on
03:58 PM roycroft: but those certs take a long time to process and validate
03:58 PM roycroft: so they let their current cert expire in the meantime
03:59 PM roycroft: now folks get security warnings/blocks when they try to access the website
03:59 PM XXCoder: now thats hard drive crash
03:59 PM roycroft: this has been going on since 28 august
03:59 PM travis_farmer: should have re-uped the current certs in the meantime
03:59 PM roycroft: in the email they sent they encouraged customers to find a browser that lets them override the security warning and use that instead
03:59 PM roycroft: that's when i blew up
04:00 PM travis_farmer: lol
04:00 PM roycroft: i told them they should have just renewed the existing cert, installed it, and kept working on the enhanced cert
04:00 PM roycroft: i told them that if they were my customer i'd have their site back online, securely, in five minutes or less
04:00 PM roycroft: but that i do not want them to be my customer
04:00 PM XXCoder: hand, apply to face
04:00 PM roycroft: i want them to find a real it team
04:01 PM roycroft: not the clowns they're using now
04:01 PM roycroft: and i told them it was reckless of them to try to trick their customers into avoiding critical security protocols
04:02 PM roycroft: it looks like they've installed a new certificate now
04:02 PM roycroft: it's no longer expired
04:03 PM roycroft: it just has a domain name mismatch
04:03 PM roycroft: highlandwoodworking.com is using a cert for *.networksolutions.com
04:03 PM roycroft: i think that's even worse than using an expired cert
04:03 PM travis_farmer: OMG LOL
04:03 PM roycroft: it's all pretty stupid
04:04 PM roycroft: and completely unnecessary
04:04 PM roycroft: even a letsencrypt cert would be better than what they're doing right now
04:05 PM * roycroft needs to get back to elections work, and will order from highland woodworking at some later time, if at all
04:06 PM * travis_farmer needs to sell his 5th wheel camper so he can buy CNC/Shop stuff...
04:28 PM _unreal_: So I'm not sure what I want to do with it...
04:28 PM _unreal_: I pulled apart the old WASHER. It died.
04:29 PM _unreal_: the water pump motor lost its seal filled the motor housing, shorted out and shorted out the controller. The motor controller to drive the big drum. still works.
04:29 PM _unreal_: I'm tempted to "FIGHT" the conformal THICK AS HELL coating off and remove the controller chip
04:30 PM _unreal_: see what the model of it is. and see about making a new PCB. and mounting that to it.
04:30 PM _unreal_: I'm thinking it would be interesting to use a big ass brushless washing machine motor for a spindle for a mill
04:31 PM _unreal_: it runs on 120vac. Dont know what if anything it converts down to
04:31 PM _unreal_: dc volts wise. but I'm just toying with the idea of making an epoxy cement mill
04:32 PM acer: GOD I hate my internet
04:32 PM acer: So as I was saying wondering what to do with the sashing machine giant brushless motor.
04:34 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HdikHRXnAs
04:34 PM CaptHindsight: Mesa 7i80 + 7i76 + 8i20 + Washing Machine Motor
04:36 PM acer: cringed as I saw all of those boards sitting on a rug
04:36 PM acer: static safty :S
04:36 PM CaptHindsight: hah, nice account name https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mjHwMWt_jk
04:36 PM andypugh_: To be hionest, that’s all I ever did with it. Maybe it would make a fun e-bike hub motor?
04:36 PM acer is now known as _unreal_
04:37 PM andypugh_: (That’s my washing machine motor video)
04:37 PM _unreal_: but ya I was thinking of what it could be used for
04:37 PM CaptHindsight: yeah I thought you went on to make a machine with them
04:42 PM testlkjstwt is now known as _unreal_
04:42 PM _unreal_: now lets see if I can sti stable for a little while
04:42 PM _unreal_: my god
04:42 PM _unreal_: my internet dropped me twice in a min
04:42 PM _unreal_: I know what the problem is but I'm NOT allowed to fix it
05:01 PM Tom_L: i think andypugh_ was trying to see how many mesa cards he could chain together
05:04 PM XXCoder: pretty sure answer is "yes"
05:05 PM Tom_L: would make a helluva long config line to access io
05:11 PM * travis_farmer signs off for supper
05:11 PM roycroft: i have about a dozen different sizes of pop rivets in stock, but the size i need i do not have
05:11 PM roycroft: i sometimes wonder if building inventory is worth it
05:15 PM XXCoder: tom yep lol
05:17 PM skunkworks: I have had atleast 3 mesa cards running at once..
05:17 PM skunkworks: one machine has 2 mesa pci cards (K&T
05:18 PM skunkworks: Lol - I had to look back a a config to figure out how I setup the spindle..
05:18 PM XXCoder: setup that large i'd have documented it definitely
05:19 PM XXCoder: couple hours work doc means days less figuring stuff out as I fix stuff
05:25 PM skunkworks: agreed. I just n ever do
05:26 PM XXCoder: well i said definitely but would I? I dunno also lol
05:33 PM _unreal_: but so ya what I was trying to say is that it would be interneting to use one of those motors as a spindle drive motor
05:33 PM _unreal_: VERY high torque
05:33 PM _unreal_: ether direct drive or belt reduction
05:34 PM _unreal_: would be even more amazing if the bell was weighted
05:35 PM _unreal_: but in anycase the drive motor that came from the washing machine I had. is like 16" across
05:35 PM Tom_L: not a F&P
05:41 PM XXCoder: interneting?
05:42 PM Tom_L: it's a word :)
06:13 PM CaptHindsight: looks like fall weather starts here in about a week, high 90's F today, high 60's F next week
06:13 PM CaptHindsight: \0/
06:13 PM JT-Shop: went from 93 to 73 in a couple of hours
06:14 PM CaptHindsight: I like those days where you can stand outside and feel the front come through
06:14 PM CaptHindsight: some days you can even see them https://i.imgur.com/NAmstpO.jpg
06:25 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:52 PM Tom_L: close to 100 here
06:52 PM Tom_L: cooler mid week
06:53 PM Tom_L: capn, those are cool to see come in.. had a few this year briefly
07:30 PM Unterhaus_: I love how everyone in our town is on the internet checking to see if anyone knows when the power is going back on
07:39 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
07:49 PM skunkworks: central air has been working awesome.. I guess it really did need a clean after I fixed it.
07:49 PM skunkworks: been in the 100's here too
07:52 PM Tom_L: :)
08:05 PM roycroft: i cleaned the filter on my office window ac the other day, and it's been working much better since then
09:00 PM roycroft: it's so odd that it's monday
09:00 PM roycroft: it seems like a sunday still
09:01 PM * roycroft is not complaining about getting an extra sunday this week
