12:36 AM Unterhaus__ is now known as Unterhausen
04:48 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:02 AM JT-Cave: 60°F
06:08 AM Tom_L: 73°F
06:09 AM JT-Cave: windows open and the bedroom is freezing cold lol
06:10 AM Tom_L: AC fixed?
06:11 AM JT-Cave: no
06:11 AM JT-Cave: I put a window unit in the bedroom

06:15 AM JT-Cave: I get a kick out of blocking those
06:25 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
08:52 AM Unterhausen: does it cost extra to make your whois details private?
09:32 AM roycroft: not usually, but it depends on the domain registrar
09:32 AM roycroft: and some top level domains do not permit domain privacy at all
09:40 AM roycroft: i offer domain privacy for free for all tlds that allow it
10:25 AM Unterhausen: JT should do that
10:45 AM roycroft: both domains of his of which i'm aware have a proxy registrant
10:53 AM roycroft: i guess i'm not very drug-savvy
10:54 AM roycroft: the list of the first 10 drugs subject to price negotiations by medicare has been released, and i've not heard of a single one of them
10:55 AM Tom_L: but you're bound to need them
10:57 AM roycroft: quite possibly
10:58 AM JT-Shop: getting a whole new heat/air system
10:58 AM Unterhausen: casino spam on the forum, got ban hammer?
10:59 AM Unterhausen: There was a process by which they chose the drugs on the list, including how long they've been out and how overpriced they are
10:59 AM travis_farmer: i would take care of it, but for some reason they won't give me the keys... ;-)
11:00 AM Unterhausen: spam on forums where I can't ban the spammer drives me nuts
11:00 AM travis_farmer: that's why i am admin on two forums, and moderator on another. i hate SPAM
11:01 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, gotta change the lines too?
11:01 AM roycroft: the process also takes into account whether there are any competing medications
11:01 AM Unterhausen: when I die, please make contributions in my name to stopforumspam.com
11:01 AM travis_farmer: LOL
11:01 AM roycroft: which is related to how overpriced they are
11:02 AM Unterhausen: the one I wish they would go after is symbacort
11:02 AM Unterhausen: no such luck
11:02 AM roycroft: there are legal challenges already
11:03 AM JT-Shop: no, they flush them out
11:03 AM roycroft: the big pharma companies are challenging the law on 1st, 5th, and 8th amendment alleged violations
11:03 AM Tom_L: that's good.. i didn't know if they could do that
11:03 AM JT-Shop: Unterhausen, done
11:03 AM JT-Shop: lunch time
11:03 AM roycroft: why shouldn't the government be able to negotiate price when the private sector can?
11:04 AM travis_farmer: who did you ban JT? i can't get in to the forum now... (kidding) ;-)
11:08 AM roycroft: the biggest recorded storm surge in tampa was 4 feet
11:08 AM roycroft: the surge there from idalia is predicted to be 11 feet
11:09 AM Tom_L: that should make a big mess
11:09 AM roycroft: yeah, it's going to be pretty bad
11:11 AM roycroft: and if it shifts easterly just a little bit earlier than predicted it could hit tampa head on as a category 3
11:11 AM Unterhausen: I think my cousins live inland a bit
11:12 AM roycroft: as last as florida is i hope they live inland quite a bit
11:12 AM roycroft: flat, rather
11:15 AM JT-Cave: I guess I need to hand install wordpress, that auto install does not give me a chance to set the user name and password so I can't log in...
11:15 AM roycroft: i think the autoinstall generates a password for you
11:15 AM JT-Cave: yeah but what is it?
11:15 AM roycroft: i'm not sure, as i never install it that way - i use wordpress-cli and a script i wrote
11:16 AM roycroft: iirc it tells you when it generates it
11:16 AM JT-Cave: nope not on dreamhost
11:16 AM roycroft: hmm
11:16 AM roycroft: can you do a password recovery?
11:16 AM roycroft: did it ever ask you your email address?
11:16 AM JT-Cave: nope
11:16 AM roycroft: odd
11:17 AM roycroft: that's likely some dreamhost-specific installer
11:17 AM roycroft: you might check their documentation to see if it helps
11:18 AM JT-Cave: https://developer.wordpress.org/advanced-administration/before-install/howto-install/
11:19 AM CaptHindsight: roycroft: who has decent VOIP with SMS trunks these days?
11:20 AM CaptHindsight: my old provider is EOLing their service
11:20 AM roycroft: oh jeeze
11:20 AM roycroft: nobody?
11:20 AM roycroft: i use vitelity/voyant, and i'm pretty happy with them still
11:20 AM travis_farmer: FreePBX :-)
11:20 AM roycroft: we use flowroute at work
11:21 AM roycroft: he's taking about providers, not pbx software
11:21 AM travis_farmer: oh :-(
11:21 AM roycroft: the problem is that none of them want any new customers
11:21 AM CaptHindsight: it's ok
11:21 AM roycroft: they make it almost impossible to order trunks if you're not already a legacy customer
11:21 AM roycroft: they assume 100% of new customers are scammers
11:21 AM roycroft: and that's probably not far from the truth
11:22 AM CaptHindsight: my old provider has offered migration to another service at 10x my current rates
11:22 AM CaptHindsight: gee thanks
11:23 AM CaptHindsight: Dear Vitelity, I am not a phone scammer, pedo, money launderer, Nazi, etc. I just want SIP services
11:27 AM roycroft: flowroute's rates are really good, but it's almost impossible to get service from them
11:28 AM roycroft: which is a big reason i'm still with vitelity
11:28 AM roycroft: i've been a customer of theirs for 20ish years
11:28 AM roycroft: and their rates are really good
11:29 AM roycroft: they do a little more maintenance involving outages than i like, but they still have between 4 nines and 5 nines uptime
11:30 AM * roycroft is thinking they're not even voyant any more - he's fairly sure they got borged again and have a new name
11:31 AM roycroft: i still log into a vitelity website to manage my account, but i know that voyant bought vitelity years ago
11:31 AM roycroft: yeah, i think voyant are sinch.com now
11:32 AM roycroft: unles sinch got borged recently
11:32 AM * roycroft cannot keep up with the mergers and acquisitions stuff
11:40 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.twilio.com/en-us new stuff
11:43 AM roycroft: twilio would not have me as a customer either
11:44 AM roycroft: and yay!
11:45 AM roycroft: i just got an email indicating that my new driver's license is being delivered today
11:46 AM roycroft: i have a temporary one now, but the investment companies i use won't accept a temporary license, and will lock me out if i don't upload my new id before the old one expires, which will be very soon
11:46 AM roycroft: i guess when i get the new one i'll be eligible to fly and ride on trains again, too
11:46 AM roycroft: not that i have any plans to do so any time soon
11:52 AM JT-Cave: Click Install.
11:52 AM JT-Cave: Within 15 minutes, an email is sent to you at the primary email listed on your DreamHost account. This email details further steps to take to complete the installation.
11:52 AM JT-Cave: there's my sign
11:54 AM roycroft: ok
11:54 AM roycroft: there you go
12:48 PM JT-Shop: just need to setup that email lol and it's gmail so a royal PIA
01:28 PM travis_farmer: well, i just got my GitLab Open Source License, so it is officialy unofficial, i can Mirror the LinuxCNC source-code on my GitLab server, and keep it refreshed (within 5 minutes) to the official Github repo. so, if something happens, and we hope it NEVER does, but if Github craps out, my mirror should still be there. depending on how many trust it... :-)
01:30 PM travis_farmer: http://www.tjfhome.net:8090/linuxcnc-mirror/linuxcnc
01:31 PM JT-Cave: cool
01:32 PM travis_farmer: :-)
01:33 PM travis_farmer: i have one extra open login on the licence, how should that be setup? or not yet?
02:32 PM Tom_L: travis_farmer, why port 8090?
02:36 PM travis_farmer: port 80 is used by my webserver
02:38 PM travis_farmer: and 8080 is my HomeAssistant access port
02:46 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, you changing servers again?
02:48 PM JT-Woodshop: no
02:50 PM JT-Shop: I "think" I got wrangled into taking over this page and reworking it to be a bit better https://www.corvettesofsoutheastmissouri.com/
02:51 PM CloudEvil: Does anyone have a recommended 2d cad program for android tablet with stylus?
02:51 PM CloudEvil: Ideally without microtransactions, and exports to sane formats.
02:58 PM Tom_L: kindof a small workspace for a cad program
02:58 PM CloudEvil: I mean, yes, but also no.
02:58 PM Tom_L: but acad says it will
02:58 PM Tom_L: but not free
02:58 PM Tom_L: https://www.computeraideddesignguide.com/5-best-cad-drawing-apps-for-android/
02:58 PM Tom_L: a review
02:59 PM Tom_L: no personal experience
02:59 PM CloudEvil: For detailed high fidelity models of stuff, sure. For capturing several critical dimensions, ...
03:00 PM Tom_L: don't know of any free ones but that wasn't part of the spec
03:01 PM Tom_L: what format are you wanting to export?
03:01 PM Tom_L: 2d most use dxf that i've seen anyway
03:02 PM Tom_L: i'll bring those in and give it some height and save them as a a solid
03:04 PM CloudEvil: Mostly just anything that's not its own format. And, yes, there is free, and there is £100/year.
03:04 PM Tom_L: my phone gives acad a 3.4 rating on android
03:04 PM Tom_L: appear to be free... who knows
03:05 PM CaptHindsight: I refuse to run any CAD or EDA apps on a phone
03:06 PM Tom_L: aww
03:06 PM Tom_L: i can't see that it would be useful at all really
03:06 PM Tom_L: and probably wouldn't either
03:06 PM CloudEvil: It's compared to doing a drawing badly on an A5 pad.
03:06 PM CaptHindsight: unless i have a 24" phone screen
03:07 PM Tom_L: you must have some big pockets
03:07 PM Tom_L: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gstarmc.android&hl=en_US&gl=US
03:07 PM Tom_L: that one has a better rating than acad
03:09 PM CaptHindsight: Android Catia
03:10 PM CaptHindsight: can't you run real CAD on a PC and just use your Android as a remote UI?
03:16 PM CloudEvil: I would ideally like something that doesn't rely on the network working.
03:23 PM roycroft: if you do it in a vnc session it should be ok
03:23 PM roycroft: if the network goes down the session just detaches, and you can reattach when the network is back
03:24 PM roycroft: but if you're going to be away from the network for a while that won't work so well
03:38 PM CaptHindsight: I suffered with Mac512's running CAD and desktop publishing, what were those maybe 8" screens?
03:39 PM CaptHindsight: 9" 512 x 342
03:46 PM roycroft: i get openscad would run nicely on a tablet
03:53 PM perry_j1987: hmm i wonder how much force this compression screw will exert (gotta figure out bearing arrangement for it
04:00 PM travis_farmer: i kept falling asleep... had to make a cup of coffee... now i probably won't sleep tonight... :-)
04:31 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdcXkmvXXwU
04:31 PM XXCoder: so fun video. its video on setting up new sewer pump station
04:39 PM Tom_L: they're building a new water treatment plant here to handle more volume
04:40 PM Tom_L: https://wichitawaterworks.com/about/
04:48 PM JT-Shop: I was an electrician on a water treatment plant build in Cape
04:49 PM XXCoder: yeah? cool :)
04:50 PM XXCoder: tom yeah. thats what he talks about at start. theyre doubling the system for more volume, plus they have room to turn off one during low flow to do maintance they couldnt do before
04:51 PM Tom_L: that one is on the tail end of the water useage though ours is on the front end
04:52 PM Tom_L: we service several surrounding towns here as well
05:07 PM XXCoder: cool :)
05:27 PM * JT-Shop is a tired puppy...
05:43 PM Tom_L: heh
05:44 PM XXCoder: woof...
05:46 PM roycroft: i just made about 1/2 of a part with the origin
05:47 PM roycroft: i think it's going to all work out smoothly now, and it's going to be time to purchase vectric vcarve pro very soon, as that is the key
05:55 PM XXCoder: decided not to build your own?
05:56 PM roycroft: vcave is the cad software
05:56 PM roycroft: vcarve
05:57 PM XXCoder: oh was thinking that cnc router thing
05:57 PM roycroft: vectric are an australian software house who make cnc router apps
05:57 PM roycroft: i am still going to build that
05:57 PM roycroft: and soon, i hope
05:57 PM roycroft: i was planing on buying vcarve pro for the cnc router
05:57 PM roycroft: but since it does the job so well for the origin, i'm going to buy it sooner
05:58 PM XXCoder: ahh cool. how much is it anyway
05:58 PM roycroft: $799 for vcarve pro, which does 2.5d cad
05:58 PM roycroft: $1999 for apsire, which does full 3d
05:58 PM XXCoder: ouch. worth it for production and more well off hobbyist
05:58 PM roycroft: i don't know if i'll need aspire, but i can upgrade for the cost difference if i need to - no penalty
05:58 PM XXCoder: im neither
05:59 PM roycroft: er, $699 for vcarve pro
05:59 PM roycroft: and actually, i might get desktop vcarve for now
05:59 PM roycroft: the main difference between vcarve and vcarve pro is that the former is limited to a 600mm x 600mm footprint
05:59 PM roycroft: whereas the pro version is unlimited size
06:00 PM roycroft: and i'm not going to be doing anything even approaching 600mm with the origin, at least not for a while
06:00 PM roycroft: so i could spend $350 on the desktop version now, then upgrde to pro when it's time, and to aspire later, if i decide i need to
06:01 PM roycroft: but honestly $700 isn't all that much money for a good cad package, especially since it comes with cam software
06:01 PM roycroft: and more especialy since the cam software comes with a linuxcnc profile
06:03 PM JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/mIKXT79TUZQ?t=682
06:03 PM JT-Shop: combo machines must be popular in uk
06:04 PM roycroft: english men tend to have small sheds
06:05 PM JT-Shop: he built the boat shed from scrap and tear down buildings
06:33 PM XXCoder: roy not too bad really on 350
06:33 PM XXCoder: and yeah I know 700 usd isnt all that much for cad package which is kinda sad lol
06:40 PM roycroft: if only i could pay that much in australian dollars :)
06:43 PM XXCoder: or yen ;)
06:43 PM XXCoder: or maybe russian money as it crushed in value
06:54 PM perry_j1987: freecad wont work for ya? :)
06:54 PM XXCoder: last I looked cam isnt great on it
07:14 PM * roycroft respectfully declines engaging on freecad today
07:33 PM mrec: can anyone recommend a reliable 400w servo motor? I'm looking at delta motors, they're fine so far but maybe someone has some better recommendation
07:33 PM mrec: I would like to upgrade the X / 2Y motors of my pick and place machine
07:35 PM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/SiVE34.jpg that's the setup so far just cheap JMC motors
07:37 PM CloudEvil: Not actually answering your question - you're sure your current gearing is right for optimal performance?
08:19 PM mrec: it's more a matter of acceleration and that's where the pressure on the system lies
08:19 PM mrec: I'm sharing a 380w power supply on the Y axis so far and have issues since it's probably not enough for both Ys
08:20 PM CloudEvil: Meaning are you torque, RPM or power limited. Gearing might help if not power limited.
08:20 PM mrec: a power dump is installed it improves the situation a lot
08:20 PM CloudEvil: hmm.
08:20 PM * CloudEvil has no sensible suggestions - I've not been looking at servos.
08:21 PM mrec: acceleration /deceleration are the important parts actual speed not really because components are too close to the PCB usually
08:24 PM djdelorie: why not just upgrade the power supply? Servo accel/decel is dependent on voltage, so if the supply sags...
08:30 PM mrec: because I'm still limited to 200w and 0.6nM
08:30 PM mrec: 180W motors 0.6nM
08:30 PM mrec: NM
08:59 PM djdelorie: I've been running EAD DA34FBB-13 servos on my cnc, but they're sadly no longer produced. 400W, 0.95NM
09:00 PM djdelorie: (er, 0.95 continuous, 2.37 peak)
09:20 PM mrec: I really wonder when handling the JMC integrated servos and talking with the JMC support no way they mention anything that a power dump is required for those motors if you run them high speed
09:21 PM mrec: I built my own powerdump already and it works fine.
09:23 PM mrec: the spec is shady in my eyes.. you can run it up to 48V .. certainly the caps are rated 50V again when decelerating it will easily induce a higher voltage into the caps
09:24 PM djdelorie: stopping a servo dumps energy into the power supply, proportional to the system inertia
09:24 PM djdelorie: I have to run my power supply a bit low to accept stopping a 150lb gantry without overvolting
09:24 PM djdelorie: I need to build a power dump too ;-)
09:25 PM djdelorie: but all servos work that way, not just JMC's
09:26 PM djdelorie: or you can manage it by limiting accel/decel
09:26 PM mrec: yes, but specifying the motor can run at 48V while the caps are 50V is not good
09:27 PM mrec: limiting acceleration for a pick and place machine is not what you want too much
09:27 PM djdelorie: yeah, that's too marginal for me. I would have spec'd 63V minimum
09:27 PM mrec: for my CNC I don'T care I don't have too much acceleration / deceleration there.
09:33 PM roycroft: wow
09:33 PM roycroft: the publisher's clearing house scam is back
09:33 PM roycroft: i thought that died a while ago
09:34 PM roycroft: i mean, it's awesome - they told me i won the big prize
09:34 PM roycroft: i just have to pay the taxes to them up front before they can deliver the check
09:34 PM rue_mohr: ah, there you are
09:35 PM * roycroft wonders where he can borrow ~$350k to pay the taxes
09:35 PM rue_mohr: ok, so I want to mill a panel meter pointer from a CD
09:39 PM rue_mohr: but the body is 1/64" wide
